Implosive-type electrical/mechanical connectors such as XECONEX have been used extensively for joining electrical transmission lines. This implosive action of explosives has also been applied to other forms of high energy metal working with excellent results. However, as with many other products, the inherent blast energy of these units has caused some environmental concerns especially when used in proximity to inhabited areas.

This paper is based on an undergraduate research project undertaken for the explosives emphasis in the UMR mining engineering degree program by the first author. The purpose of the selected research topic was to investigate the impact sensitivity of commercial detonators to determine their relative safety for handling and how much abuse they can take without accidentally firing. A modified BAM tester was used for the investigation. Both electric and non electric detonators were impacted at incremental positions along their length to determine the relative effect of their various components. Repeat impact tests were also conducted to see how a damaged cap would react to repeated abuse. The results indicate that it takes a significant amount of impact energy to initiate commercial detonators. They also indicate that repeated abuse can increase sensitivity. Modern commercial detonators appear to be relatively insensitive to impact (an order of magnitude above RDX in the standard BAM test) and this is mainly due to their construction. This explains why damaged caps with exposed powder are more sensitive. Their measured insensitivity correlates with rough handling not being a major cause of blasting accidents.

Toxic fume concentrations from industrial mining explosives depend somewhat upon the type of rock (or other strata) confinement. Though traditional detonation theory disregards this influence, the work principal from thermodynamics reveals it, when the violent interactions that transpire within the rock blast are taken into proper account. Resolution of the work principle technique requires total thermodynamic equilibrium under constraint, so the nonequilibrium dynamics is rendered in that way, using an old trick from theoretical mechanics that revises the representation of forces. The rock pressure reduces to a four-component sum: the rock compressive strength and natural atmospheric pressure, as reckoned quasi-statically, and the gravitational influence and reversed inertial resistance, as reckoned dynamically. Tabulated specie concentrations and graphical trends reveal the dependency upon rock pressure, rock temperature and the fuel-oil percentage in ammonium nitrate mixtures (ANFO), used to illustrate the model. Rigid-wall test chambers have notable ullage (residual space), where rapid expansion influences the reaction quenching, yielding a fume spectrum unlike that for rock confinement; reported rock tests are therefore used for comparisons. For the thermodynamic regime where quenching occurs, seven concentrations are resolved, including carbon monoxide (CO) and total nitrogen oxides (NOX). Their trends yield inferences regarding the way unwanted charge desensitization from transitory hole-to-hole wave impact in conjunction with reduced rock pressure can yield nasty toxic fumes, the dark rusty cloud phenomenon!

A series of small scale explosive tests were performed at a perlite mine near Socorro, New Mexico. The tests were designed to investigate the azimuthal or directional relationship between small scale geologic structures such as joints and the propagation of explosively-induced ground motions. Three shots were initiated within a single borehole located at ground zero at depths varying from 83 m (272 ft) to 10 m (32 ft). An array of three component velocity and acceleration transducers were placed in two concentric rings at distances of 20 m (66 ft) and 40 m (131 ft) surrounding the single hole at 7.5° , 15° , and 30° azimuths as measured from ground zero. Data from the transducers were then used to determine the average propagation velocity and waveform characteristics of the blast vibration through the rock mass at the various azimuths. The rock mass was mapped to determine the predominate joint orientations (strike and dip) and the average propagation velocities were correlated with this geologic information. The results showed that there is a correlation between the predominate joint orientation and ground motion amplitudes and velocity. The more predominate geologic structures allow the wave to follow along their strike thereby forming a planar path of least resistance and in turn, allowing higher velocities and amplitudes. Secondary joints or structures may act in concert with more prominent features to form a network of channels or paths along which the wave moves more freely than it may when traveling against the structures. The greatest azimuthal variations in velocity and amplitude was observed for the shallow shot at 10 m (32 ft) depth.

Blasting conducted in surface coal mining operations in the Appalachian region consumes a significant amount of blasting agents. Emission of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from these operations potentially represents an environmental challenge. This paper presents work conducted to quantify NOx output from the detonation of blasting agents common to surface blasting operations in surface coal mines. Annual ANFO and emulsion consumption data was collected from an operational surface coal mine located in West Virginia. It is known that many factors contribute to the types of gaseous byproducts released from the detonation of explosives. These factors include but are not limited to: fuel to oxygenator ratio, degree of confinement, and contamination. While, past research has been conducted to study the relationships these factors play on the release of NOx, these findings do not agree with one another. The annual explosive consumption values from the West Virginian mine were applied to NOx emission conversion factors in published literature. This lead to a range of NOx emissions from 95 to 914 tons in a year. Given the wide range of NOx production the utility of this information is suspect. The EPA recognizes a standard factor of 17 lbs (NOx)/ton (ANFO) however this factor is based on chemical composition and does not address contamination, confinement, or AN to FO ratio. This factor when applied to the West Virginia Mine's explosive consumption produced a value of 215 tons of NOx. There is a lack of information on NOx emission from emulsion type explosives. The work presented in this paper can be used by blasting professionals to quantify NOx emissions and guide future work for producing better predictor factors.

Underground coal-mine explosives (permissibles) can be substantially degraded by the underground stress waves from the explosion of neighboring borehole charges. This cross-borehole interaction generally yields the worst receptor (impacted) charge performance when the borehole separations are too close. For explosives which recover, the receptor degradation is worst when the delay until firing is small. Except for a poor quality muck pile or unreacted cartridge fragments, degraded charge malfunctions of this type are difficult to detect in coal-mine delay blasting. A simulator which reproduces the underground wave/receptor charge interaction and special underwater donor/receptor tests were utilized to study this transient desensitization problem. Test results revealed reductions in receptor energy output, delayed transitions into detonation, inferior reaction rates, or sympathetic reaction responses from the impaction. Tests on detonators showed reduced tip-strength, abnormal functioning times, or sympathetic firing as a result of transient impaction. The cross-borehole desensitization and sympathetic reaction response problems warrant concern because they are logical mechanisms for raising the risk of hazardous mining conditions, including blown-out shots, flyrock, charge deflagration, and methane/coal dust ignitions.

The propagation of a shock wave through air as a result of quarry blasting consists only of one type of wave, the compression wave. This is in marked contrast to seismic waves where a number of different types of wave are generated by the one blasting event. Even so the interaction of the burn time of a single hole and the resulting air overpressure is still too complicated to be able to be accurately modelled from first principles. It is considered that the best way forward is to monitor an individual single hole to obtain a signature wave form that has resulted from this complex interaction. Once this wave form is known, the variation in geometry of a mutli-hole blast and the timings of the successive detonations can be modelled to give a sufficient degree of accuracy to recreate the likely magnitude, duration and wave form of a multi-hole quarry type blast. This can then be directly compared with actual air overpressure wave forms from quarry blast to verify the model.

One method for small arms disposal is the use of a deactivation furnace or explosive waste incinerator. There are numerous hurdles a facility typically encounters to get the furnace or incinerator fully operational and permitted. For example, one Department of Defense installation was in the permitting process 7 years, which included numerous facility upgrades and modifications. This paper will discuss the technical approach for proactively addressing permitting issues and requirements and will identify potential pitfalls to avoid as well as ways to reduce costs. For example, when determining the waste profile, the facility should forecast its treatment needs (taking into account the net explosive weight limits of the furnace/incinerator) and then classify the wastes into "chemical families" based on the type and composition of the wastes. One waste from each family should then be selected for potential inclusion in the trial burn. Modeling the waste disposal can help to narrow down the number of wastes requiring characterization during a trial burn, as well as the number of analyses.

This paper and slide presentation is a brief rundown on what is probably the worst natural devastation I have ever witnessed. The epicenter of the quake that so violently shook Mexico City occurred 230 miles away near Mexico's west coast. The first calculation placed the quake at 7.8 on the Richter scale. This was later upgraded to 8.1. Each unit increase on the Richter scale indicates about a 30 fold increase in energy released. The quake was felt in much of Mexico and south Texas and damage occurred in many other Mexican cities. On the morning of September 19, 1985, at 7:18 A.M., the ground went into motion and shook for approximately 2 to 4 minutes. During this period most of the devastation occurred. At 7:38 P.M. the following day, the second quake hit and more buildings fell from this 7.5 quake. The ground in Mexico City moves like jello since it is a dry lake bed 7,350 feet above sea level.\

Ever since the introduction of Liquid oxygen explosives in India in 1927, these explosives are being extensively used in the various mining industries such as coal, ironore, limestone, bauxite, magnesite etc. The earlier LOX compositions were based on cellulosic material of Weberlox series of French origin. They contained the basic ingredients of saw dust with an admixture of cork dust, some hydrocarbons and some metallic powders. However, there were some inherent defects in the soaking characteristics of these compositions, in as much as, absorption and retention of liquid oxygen in the cartridges were not properly regulated in the fine pores and in the inter-granular spaces inside the ingredients in a uniform manner.

The supply crunch and cost rise for ammonium nitrate (AN) over the past year have been influenced by a number of factors. These include a general inflationary tendency, particularly great cost rises in fuel, and by a market condition in which demand for ammonium nitrate is great and supply is limited. Demand is largely confined to agricultural and explosives uses with explosives subdivided into mining, construction, and quarrying. The projections show that demand may be expected to increase markedly for the indefinite future in the agricultural and mining sectors of the ammonium nitrate market while fluctuating with indicators of economic activity for the construction and the quarrying sectors. Supply is projected to increase with plants being designed and built due to high need levels and commensurately high profit potential but not enough are planned to provide an equilibrium market. Constraints upon supply increases to match demand increases include shortages in the raw material, natural gas, high cost of investment capital, high equipment costs and long construction delays. The result should be, even under optimistic conditions, considerable shortage and resultant pressure for higher prices through 1979 for ammonium nitrate. The best hope for relief in the intervening years appears to be conservation. In blasting operations, the earliest and best proven route to conservation seems to be improved utilization available from application of highest available technology and most efficient current blasting practice.

We have assured them that there is not a problem but they require proof of this.

This paper presents the results of an experimental and numerical investigation of the shock wave energy transmission and reflection through boundary layers (joints, fractures) or between inhomogeneous geomedium with different physical properties. The conclusions drawn significantly clarify the dynamic failure mechanics because of shock wave energy transmission and reflection through different rock materials and their jointed interfaces. Thorough studies were performed to document the transient, two dimensional deformation characteristics, the normal and shear stress fields for inhomogeneous geomedium focusing on the influence of the internal geometrical shapes, relative density variations and packing of the grain boundaries.

The quiet banks of the Maumee River in Toledo, Ohio, received a wake-up call July 16 as two smokestacks in the Marina District were leveled with dynamite. B&B Wrecking, Inc. of Cleveland contracted the project with the city to bring down the twin stacks, both measuring over 250 feet tall. The structures were part of the Toledo Edison Steam Plant and were erected nearly a hundred years ago. A week’s worth of preparation went into final planning, drilling and loading holes with over 80 pounds of explosives. The felling went precisely as planned as onlookers cheered as the stacks were reduced to rubble.

This paper outlines the type and success of the various Controlled Blasting Techniques that were used to minimize overbreak in the portal and tunnel excavations. The different Smoothwall and Cushion Charge loads used in the different ground types are described in detail. Delay Timing and Drilling Pattern variations are also discussed.

Overbreak into the wall rock of a development drift leads to the inevitable need to rehabilitate a drift. Moreover, overbreak in a production heading can lead to external dilution and lower ore grades. Both of these factors are critical to bottom line costs of underground operations today. The geology of the Homestake orebody makes this an even more complex problem. For over fifteen years the Homestake Mine has attempted to implement perimeter blasting techniques that are both safe and cost effective. Many practical perimeter methods and products have been tested including air decking; low density emulsions; various types of stick powder; various decoupling media including rope, low density ANFO, polystyrene ANFO, salt based ANFO, and various grain detonating cords up to 200 grain.
