This paper presents a case history involving the installation of drilled in piles with rock sockets for the Bicycle and Pedestrian Path project located west of the Henry Hudson Parkway within the Riverside Park between 83rd Street and 91st Street at the Hudson River in New York, NY. The paper specifically addresses access and construction procedures for a marine installation when working in an urban and environmentally sensitive setting.

Foundation piles, partly passing through unconsolidated compressible layers, suffer a downward drag that is called negative skin friction. The negative skin friction depends on the movement of the surrounding unconsolidated soil relative to the pile and on the friction between pile and soil as a function of that movement. The negative skin friction adds to the load on the pile. However as it is a function of the pile movement relative to the soil, the amount of negative skin friction to be taken into account to determine the allowable bearing capacity depends on the allowable pile settlement. In this paper this property is indicated by the factor µ. As under the conditions of ultimate pile bearing capacity negative skin friction does not occur, a factor of safety is introduced, which is lower than normal. Eventually a formula for the bearing capacity is given in which µ and both figure. The exact values for given circumstances have to be determined empirically. A few examples are given.

As Technical Director of the Naples, Italy based Fondedile, a geotechnical construction firm specializing in static restoration of structures, Fernando Lizzi, Ing., devoted over 30 years to the pursuit and advancement of static restoration and subsoil strengthening. Seismic events, construction of new structures on polluted and/or unstable soils in urban areas, and a need to carefully preserve and restore delicate, war-damaged historical structures, manifested the need for underpinning projects. Traditional construction methods and approaches, such as underpinning with additional foundation masonry, were not suitable and would have further jeopardized the stability of the structures. The introduction of the palo radice (root pile) revolutionized the field of underpinning. At the time of the first application of micropiles, the industry standard was driven piles. The drilled micropile was conceived and first implemented in the early 1950s, as an innovative means to underpin sensitive, historic structures and structures in urban areas. Specifically, the new construction technique was conceived as a less expensive alternative, designed to accept structural loads, be installed in limited access areas, in varied working and sub-surface conditions, which did not involve changing soil characteristics, and had minimal disturbance to the structure being underpinned, or to adjacent structures.

The Hillside Smelter presently under construction at Richards Bay, Republic of South Africa, will be, on completion, the fifth largest aluminium smelter in the world. The site selected for this plant is underlain by sandy soils of variable density to depths of 30m or greater. In order to firmly establish pile founding depths required for alternative pile types in the variable subsurface conditions prevailing across the site, a pre-construction test piling programme was conducted incorporating piles instrumented with resistance strain gauges. The results allowed analysis of the relative contributions of end-bearing and shaft friction to the overall bearing capacity of each pile type and permitted comparison with the predictions of conventional static bearing capacity analyses. Conformance with acceptance criteria in respect of allowable pile head movements for single piles was also examined.

Foundations in any contract are the most uncertain parts of the contract and most of the "Construction-Contract-Disputes" are either directly related to foundations or arise as 'Side-effects of changes in promises related to foundations. Foundation Engineering is defined as ' The art of selection, designing and constructing the elements that transfer the weight of structure to the underlying Soil or Rock." (Ralph B. Perk). This art started becoming a science since 1920, when scientific efforts to determine the behaviour of sub-surface materials were made. The art and science merged to give new techniques and the science started dominating the field as more and more refinement came in techniques to predict more accurately the characteristics of the sub-surface elements. Inspite of good thorough investigations and design, the contractual promises drafted could leave some room for differences between the parties and above all the prudency expected of both the parties may fall short of the expectations raised in the contract. This may give rise to disputes which may need to be resolved as per principles of law. This paper attempts to initiate a dialogue amongst Foundations-Engineers and Contractors as to how do we minimise the differences arising out of or related to contracts concerning "Foundations".

Restrained basement walls and unrestrained but massive concrete walls on rock foundations experience very small movements in response to lateral earth pressures. Such walls are often designed using at-rest earth pressures without consideration of either compaction-induced lateral pressures or vertical shear forces resulting from compression of the backfill in response to self-weight. Compaction-induced lateral earth pressures can be detrimental to the integrity and stability of retaining walls. For example, the lock walls at Eisenhower and Snell Locks on the Saint Lawrence Seaway near Massena, New York, were damaged by compaction-induced lateral earth pressures, and an extensive rehabilitation program was necessary to ensure safety of the locks. Vertical shear forces, on the other hand, can be beneficial to stability because the downwards-directed vertical force tends to counteract the overturning moment from lateral earth pressures. The contribution of vertical shear forces is not included in most modern analyses of non-moving walls, but Terzaghi used this effect in his design of a high concrete retaining wall at Fifteen Mile Falls Dam. The lock walls at Eibach Lock on the Main-Donau Canal in Germany were instrumented for both lateral and vertical stresses applied by the backfill to the wall, and the resulting measurements show that vertical shear forces from the backfill were significant and persistent over the multi-year period that the wall was monitored. Other data from pilot-scale retaining walls confirm the existence of both compaction-induced lateral earth pressures and vertical shear forces. These forces should be considered in design of non-moving walls.

"PART 1 OF 2INTRODUCTIONSlurry trenches are the least cost hydraulic barrier available, if the excavated spoils can be recycled into backfill. As such, slurry trenches are constructed where possible, sometimes at high risk. Slurry trenches are also used to install biopolymer drainage trenches, which have a low safety factor because the biopolymer slurry weight is marginally greater than the weight of water. In marginal ground the construction risk falls to both the Owner who designs and asks for the construction, and the Contractor who manages the work and promises to complete the project successfully. This paper discusses design and construction of slurry trench barriers in marginally stable ground and where groundwater chemistry invokes the need for slurry management details to obtain proper backfill placement.As a designer, Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers works for both Owners and Contractors. We are usually able to convince Owners of their responsibility for design detailing in order to obtain a working final product and to obtain reasonable bids from Contractors by disclosing construction needs and designing to reduce the contractor’s exposure. "The Sunrise Powerlink project received numerous industry awards for excellence. The DFI C. William Bermingham Innovation Award recognized the innovative use of prefabricated steel micropile caps to increase safety, accelerate project schedule and minimize the project carbon footprint. DFI’s Outstanding Project Award (OPA) and World Cup of Micropiles Challenge Award honored the project as a whole and its positive outcome and industry example. Sunrise Powerlink involved construction of San Diego Gas and Electric’s (SDG&E’s) new 117 mile (188 km) 500/230 kilovolt transmission line from Imperial County to San Diego County, Calif. The alignment traversed a wide variety of geotechnical conditions, including desert, mountain and marine environments, and many of the 421 lattice tower structures used to carry the transmission lines were located in remote, rugged or environmentally-sensitive terrain.Micropiles were introduced as a solution to foundation construction in these challenging areas, which ultimately involved the design and application of Crux Subsurface Inc.’s patented steel micropile cap at 234 tower locations. This was the inaugural application of the technology, and a significant component to ensuring a successful project outcome. Foundation ChallengesThe alignment crossed a number of protected environments, including National Forest land, critical habitat for bald eagles and Peninsular big horn sheep, and numerous private properties. As a result of the remote, rugged terrain, it was initially determined that 75 lattice tower locations would not permit road construction access and would require helicopter-only construction techniques. A strict in-service date combined with long permitting lead times eventually increased this number to 234 sites. Preconstruction access constraints prohibited site-specific geotechnical sampling, so initial foundation designs were completed using only available seismic geophysical surveying and preliminary mapping data. The combination of these challenges required a foundation alternative that could accommodate variable subsurface conditions, required a minimal environmental footprint for installation, and featured lightweight materials and equipment that could be transported by helicopter."

"Mass stabilization involves mixing binding agents into marginal or contaminated soil to improve the subject material’s physical and/or chemical properties. This paper concentrates on the principles of soil mixing and benefits and application to new and existing rail right-of-way. Successfully applied in Scandinavia and other European countries, the soil mixing is now being applied in right of way in the northern latitudes of the U.S. and Canada. These regions have significant areas of “peaty” soils that can complicate construction and maintenance of rail and structure foundations. Mass stabilization can be used to improve the bearing strength of these soft soils for subsequent construction of railroads, pipelines, roads, and buildings. In civil engineering, the technology is often used to improve the construction properties such as bearing strength, of a marginal soil. In environmental engineering, stabilization is remediation treatment technology that protects human health and the environment by immobilizing hazardous constituents within the treated material. . The treatment is conducted while the subject material remains in-place (insitu). Mass Stabilization is often used to accomplish both civil and environmental purposes on the same project effectively addressing marginal soil while eliminating the expense of soil removal and replacement. This paper presents the principles of mass stabilization technology, implementation in the field and recent completed railway projects. The example rail projects will present the various benefits that soil mixing provides to railway construction and maintenance. Bench-scale studies and full scale implementation as well as soil construction properties before and after mass stabilization will be discussed. The paper and presentation will include information on the advantages of mixing methods and binding agent delivery systems.INTRODUCTIONNew or existing railroad right-of-ways may cross ground with low bearing capacity. Right of way subgrade undergo deflection (strain) as loads (stress) are applied. The amount of strain or deflection of the subgrade caused by loading of a train is proportional to the stiffness of the subgrade materials. Some soils, such as tamped ballast, are very stiff and resist loads well. Other soils such as soft clay, peat, or loose sand have low stiffness and undergo substantial movement under loads. It is very desirable to have the stiffest possible material in a track subgrade. Stiff subgrade material limits deflection under load, reducing track roughness and occurrence of track defects. Mass stabilization is a geotechnical method that can be used to improve the bearing capacity or stiffness of soil in these right-of-way. Mass stabilization involves mixing binding agents into soil subject to treatment while the soil remains in-place or insitu. Variations in the design or areas subject to treatment can be used to address transmission of vibration to adjacent structures."

Dam rehabilitation involves a range of design, construction, and operation risks, some of which are not encountered in new dam construction. These risks can have significant impact on project schedule and project budget. Owners, engineers, and contractors need to understand these risks. Existing dams typically were designed in an era of design and construction standards that have been upgraded and changed. Modern standards will impact the construction approach taken and involve understanding the earlier standards. Knowledge of historical standards/practices as well as current design standards and construction methods is valuable for developing and designing rehabilitation components. Construction records and as-built drawings are valuable when they are available. Rehabilitation projects often consist of older projects where as-built documents or construction records are not available. Where these records exist, many (most) times, they do not fully reflect the current conditions within the dam and appurtenant works. leading experienced practitioners to “expect surprises” both during investigation of the existing facility, as well as during construction. “Surprises” should be expected even when historical records of investigations, design and construction are available. Unknowns, be they known unknowns or unknown unknowns, can be planned for by developing an approach for the design and construction process to identify potential issues/problems, or at least alert the designer and contractor of potential issues. A Risk-Based approach applied for the entire life of the rehabilitation project can be used to alert the parties of potential “surprises” and provide direction for mitigating issues as they arise. This type of approach is particularly effective when the process includes senior practitioners with decades of design and construction experience in all aspects of dams. Minimizing impacts created by “surprises”, particularly during construction, can result in an improved project meeting budget and schedule goals and design standards. This paper identifies and categorizes risk types salient to dam construction, reviews the process of risk identification and analysis, discusses guidelines for risk allocation, reviews strategies to mitigate risks, presents several case studies where risk mitigation strategies were employed successfully (or unsuccessfully), and presents lessons learned. The paper concludes with a summary and recommendations for best practices for Project Risk Management and mitigation that can be used by: Owners; Design Engineers; and Construction Managers, in planning, design, pre-construction and construction phases of dam related projects.

Five trial piles were constructed during the trial pile programme for the Birmingham International Convention Centre. In addition, trial piles have been tested on two other sites in central Birmingham. Methods of pile construction were conventional sandstone rock sockets, sleeved piles and voided piles. The results of these load tests are compared with the theoretical predicted behaviour based on the results of unconfined compressive tests of rock core taken on the Convention Centre site and on other sites in the central Birmingham area. On the basis of this work, the various design procedures are discussed.

We present in this paper the results of a parametric study carried out in a calibration chamber on instrumented model piles. The aim is to point out group effect on piles within a group through their resulting shaft friction and tip resistance. The methodology relies on the study of the influence of adjacent piles on a "reference" pile. The soil used is a silica sand (Fontainebleau sand). The influence of parameters like pile spacing, number of piles and installation order are evaluated. The results show a positive effect on shaft friction of the group effect and a negative effect on tip resistance. Efficiency factors are defined in order to have a better view on the parameters influencing the response of the pile within a group.

Analysis of piles groups loaded with large bending moments and both vertical and batter piles can be best performed by matrix analysis. In this paper, a case history about a tall marine control tower is presented. The soil conditions at the site and the results of the computer analysis of the piled foundation are summarized. It is shown that the pile loads are indeed less than the allowable load for a single pile. Pile head loads and moments are used in the analysis of the raft foundation.

Although Quality Control (QC) during construction is preferable for deep foundations, there are many instances when it is necessary to resort to Quality Assurance (QA) methods if, for various reasons, QC is not possible. Non Destructive Testing (NDT) methods for deep foundations are indirect approaches, i.e. in complex situations they do not provide complete information and need to be augmented by additional testing and/or analyses. While the challenges are varied for the different deep foundation types and the different test methods they are the same in many different countries. Experience of the tester is often mentioned as being most important for a successful quality assurance. In addition, reliable testing equipment for the best possible measurements and complete construction documentation for a meaningful data interpretation are minimum requirements for a successful test outcome. Another problem is the widely varying cost of the QA tests. For that reason the specifying engineer or authority has to be aware of what can reasonably be expected so that technically feasible specifications can be written for optimal cost and minimal construction delays. This paper discusses the most common NDT methods with a view on how these methods are applied world wide. It summarizes features of specifications, recommendations for test procedures and advanced analysis methods which can help to overcome uncertainty in the quality assessment of the foundation. Finally, the authors propose a decision tree for various QA methods, deep foundation types and soil properties.

"PART 2 OF 2 (CONTINUED FROM SUMMER 2006 EDITION) CONSTRUCTION ISSUES (cont’d) The Influence of Ground Conditions on Collapse Sand and gravel strata provide frictional resistance to support active earth pressure. The angle of internal friction has only slight influence on computed stability. Sand and gravel material design parameters can be defined with SPT N-values. Silt strata should be analyzed using internal friction. Definition of soil parameters should be performed by laboratory testing. Cohesive materials, especially soft clay and peat, require careful definition for design. Shear strength should be determined by laboratory testing. Work platforms constructed over granular strata improve the ground resistance by increasing confining pressure. However, temporarily increasing overburden stress on cohesive ground reduces trench stability. If the ground contains soft cohesive deposits which are not normally consolidated to the construction overburden, these must be stabilized before attempting trench construction. Use of wick drains and surcharge fill to improve the ground is recommended. Ground stabilization work requires time, and should be performed by the Owner prior to trench excavation. The addition of cement, stone columns, or other measures to support trench excavation equipment is typically determined to be more expensive and less dependable than ground improvement. Excavation through peat can be especially problematic. Peat materials rapidly compress when earth pressures exceed preconsolidation stresses. Backfill materials provide a horizontal stress on the trench wall which can exceed the bearing capacity of peat. As the peat compresses, the trench becomes wider, and slurry levels drop and trench stability can rapidly deteriorate. If the peat is the closure layer, a shallow key is recommended. If peat is present on the trench wall, preconsolidation with surcharge is recommended. Bottom preparation and Backfill Placement Trench wall stability is a temporary condition which must be controlled by proper design and construction of work platforms and slurry features which influence ground support. Backfill materials and intimate contact of the backfill with the closure layer are permanent conditions which are the end goal of the work. The most common reason slurry trenches fail to provide working barriers is improper bottom closure. Either the closure layer is not engaged, or the backfill is not in intimate contact with the closure layer. This can result from construction problems associated with sidewall collapse described above, slurry performance and/or degradation, backfill placement methods, and failure to maintain the trench bottom clear of sediment prior to placing backfill."

An upgrading and straightening of a highway included building a bridge across a small river. A routine site investigation was initiated to determine the conditions for designing the foundation of the bridge. The proposed bridge was a two-lane highway bridge in one span with a total length of 30 m (100 ft), as indicated in Fig. 1. It was to be placed about 20 m (66 ft) upstreams of the bridge for the existing highway. The site investigation included one boring at each abutment with soil sampling and in-situ vane testing and placed about halfway up the slope from the small river at ground surface elevation + 54 m. Within the investigated maximum depth of 40 m (130 ft), the soils at both borehole locations consisted of a thin clay crust over a thick deposit of soft sensitive clay with a natural water content of about 70 % and a liquid limit of about 60. The undrained shear strength below the crust was about 20 KPa (400 psf) and increased slightly with depth. The sensitivity was high, about 40.

Cushion materials are one of the most important links in an efficient piling system. In the past, little has been done in China on this problem, so engineers are still used to those traditional woods, papers and coir ropes. In this paper, the SOA of piling cushions, their testing method and parameters used in wave equation analysis for piling are briefly reviewed. The static and dynamic mechanical characteristics of 3 types of cushion material have been determined in laboratory and suggestions about testing method and evaluation of test results are given.
