THE over-all picture of safety in mining has been encouraging during the past few years, and in mining activities as a whole the trend in accident occurrence is downward. This is the more noteworthy when the type of labor used in mines during the war period is taken into consideration. The drafting of young mining employees into the armed services and the departure of others for work in other war industries took a heavy toll of young, husky, active men. Their places were taken in large part by older men who returned to the mines, or by inexperienced men with little if any knowledge of mining. Despite the lack of labor and especially of skilled labor, and the difficulty of obtaining new equipment as well as maintaining and replacing worn or broken equipment, and numerous other difficulties the mining industry not only reached and maintained maximum production but made the increase with little if any sacrifice of safety. In fact, in many instances better safety records were. established than in normal

A SYMPOSIUM on current. conditions in Mexico, particularly in the oil and mining industries, was a most successful feature of the May meeting of the New York Section of the A.I.M.E. Heath Steele, vice-president of The American Metal Co.. Ltd., with an intimate knowledge of Mexico gave the principal address, and asked that his analysis of the present situation he regarded neither as an endorsement of Mexico's policy nor as the criticism of a disgruntled operator. To explain the .attitude of the great mass of the Mexican people towards recent developments, he first described briefly the political, social, and religious beliefs and customs of tile Mexican Indian. In spite of their contact with foreigners these beliefs and customs have remained unchanged throughout many generations. The old communal spirit and the idea of common ownership of the land still persist especially in the rural districts and villages; the old custom of a council for local self-government is reflected in the present-day labor committee. Many problems have surfaced in our economy during this decade, and the mining industry has certainly had its share: huge capital outlays for environmental controls, volatile markets, double-digit inflation, inadequate capital markets, political uncertainties-plus shortages of energy, manpower, supplies, and equipment. All these and other problems have left their visible marks on the economy of our industry. Solutions are slow in coming; perhaps, in some instances, there are no right answers. However, it appears that many companies are using joint ventures to an increasing extent in efforts to reach partial solutions to some of these problems. A joint venture does present an economic alternative that should be examined-especially when trying to answer questions arising within the current economic context. The dictionary defines "venture" as an undertaking involving chance, risk, or danger. The word was originally applied to hazardous undertakings involving delivery of cargoes to distant ports and subsequent disposition of the merchandise, but it is now applied to any project of limited scope and temporary duration. When two or more entities join in such a project, it becomes a joint venture, and this is the context in which I have used the term. Joint ventures may be formed for exploration, for development of a new ore body, or for expansion of an existing operation. Each requires different approaches for negotiating and drafting the agreement governing the conduct of the joint venture.

The week of Sept. 22, will be a week of convocation of societies in Chicago with the exposition of Chemical industries. The American. Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers will occupy the stage for most of the week, American Ceramic Society meets on Wednesday, the American Electrochemical Society on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and the Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industry from Wednesday to Saturday. There will also be a symposium upon Safety in the Plant and Mine under the chairmanship of M. L. Leopold, Safety Engineer of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and in the evening after this sleeting-which will occupy an entire afternoon-there will be shown a series of motion pictures of safety work in plant, field-and mine. The motion picture program will consist almost entirely of films now being made. Even in motion pictures, the Exposition is outstanding as the place of introduction to the public of the newest and most recent developments. Each improvement of the projectoscope in motion-picture projection has been reserved for first public demonstration at the Exposition. Mention cannot be made of the new exhibits that are engaged for the Exposition, other than to say that the electric furnace will be in operation. These will give, probably for the first time, men of science an opportunity to see and compare the various designs and judge them for the various work to which they are applicable.

AN increased demand for brown iron ore in the Birmingham district during the past 18 months has caused renewed activity both in prospecting and mining these ores. In recent years the production in Alabama has ranged from 41,559 tons in 1932 to 639,351 tons in 1928. During the last 9 years about 83 per cent of the total brown ore produced in the United States has come from Alabama (Tables 1 and 2).

The rate of growth of "Fe4N" on a iron was measured by nitriding purified iron strips in flowing am -monia -hydrogen gas mixtures at 504" and 554°C. It is shown that a dense nitride layer is formed when a zone -refined iron is used in the experiments. With less pure iron, the nitride layer is found to be porous. Through theoretical treatment, the self-diffusivity of nitrogen is evaluated porn the parabolic rate constant, and found to be essentially independent of nitrogen actirlity, e.g., D* = 3.2 x l0-12 and 7.9x l0-12 sq cm per sec at 504" and 554?C. Some consideration is given to the mechanism of diffusion in the nitride phase. THERE is a great deal of background knowledge on the solubility and diffusivity of nitrogen in iron, and on the thermodynamics and crystallography of several phases in the Fe-N system. Although case-nitrided steels have many applications in practice, no work seems to have been done on the diffusivity of nitrogen in the iron nitride, ?', phase. The only work reported on the related subject of which the authors are aware is an investigation by Prenosil,1 who measured the growth rate of the e phase on iron by nitriding in ammonia-hydrogen gas mixtures. EXPERIMENTS Purified iron plates of approximate dimensions 1 by 0.5 by 0.03 cm were nitrided in flowing mixtures of ammonia and hydrogen, in a vertical furnace fitted with a gas-tight recrystallized alumina tube. After a specified time of reaction, the sample was cooled to room temperature by withdrawal to the water cooled top of the reaction tube. The furnace temperature was controlled electronically in the usual manner within *l°C; the temperature was measured using a calibrated Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple. For each experiment the iron strip sample was cleaned with fine emery cloth and degreased with tri-chloroethylene prior to the experiment. The ammonia-hydrogen gas mixtures were prepared from anhydrous ammonia and purified hydrogen using constant pressure-head capillary flowmeters. The gas mixture flowed upward in the furnace with flow rate of 400 cc per min at stp. The composition of the gas mixture was checked by chemical analysis at regular intervals. In most cases, the compositions of the exit gas and metered input gas agreed within about 0.3 pct, indicating that cracking of ammonia did not pose a problem at the temperatures employed. Two series of experiments were carried out using two different types of purified iron samples. In the first series of experiments at 550°C, vacuum carbon deoxidized "Plastiron" was used. The main impurities present in this iron were, in ppm: 4043, 50-Cr, 20-Zr, 40-Mn, 20-P, 20-S, 20-C, 50-0, and 10-N. In these experiments the rate data were obtained by measuring the change in weight of the iron specimen suspended in the hot zone of the furnace by a platinum wire from a silica spring balance. The nitride layer formed in these experiments was found to be porous, particularly near the outer surface. In other experiments, high purity zone-refined iron (prepared in this laboratory) was used. The total impurity content of this iron was 30 ppm of which 20 ppm was Co + Ni, 4 ppm 0, other metallic impurities were less than 1 ppm. The zone-refined iron bar, -2.5 cm diam, was cold rolled to a thickness of about 0.03 cm and the specimens were prepared for the experiment as described earlier. After the nitriding experiment, the sample was copper plated electro-lytically and mounted in plastic for metallographic polishing. After polishing, the thickness of the ?' layer was measured using a metallographic microscope. The nitride layer formed on the zone-refined iron was essentially free of pores. RESULTS The different morphology of the nitride layers grown on "Plastiron" and zone-refined iron is shown in Fig. 1. Both samples were nitrided side by side for 55 hr. The holes in the less pure iron, Fig. l(a), are confined to a region about one half thickness from the outer surface. The dense layer grown on zone-refined iron, Fig. l(b), is thinner than the porous layer on the "Plastiron". The impurities in the iron are believed to be responsible for the formation of a porous nitride layer. The pore formation may be due to the high nitrogen pressures existing within the nitride layer, e.g., the equilibrium nitrogen pressure is 1.2 x l05 atm in the 38.6 pct NH3-61.4 pct H2 and 6.6 x l03 atm at the Fe-Fe4N interface at 554°C and 0.96 atm. It is possible that the oxide inclusions present in the electrolytic iron may facilitate the nuclea-tion of nitrogen gas bubbles within the nitride layer. Support for this reasoning is the fact that pores are only encountered in the outer range of the layer where nitrogen pressures are largest. The photomicrographs in Fig. 2 show the effect of reaction time on the thickness of the dense nitride layer formed on zone-refined iron. These sections are from samples nitrided in a stream of 29 pct NH3-71 pct H2 mixture at 554°C for 22, 70, and 255 hr. In all the sections examined the nitride-iron interface was noted to be rugged. The design and analysis of a circular, domed powerhouse for Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) Company's Kerckhoff 2 Project is described. Exploration, geologic stress determinations, mechanical properties, reinforcement and instrumentation are addressed briefly. The analyses of the circular, domed cavern and the comparison of predicted and field deformations are presented in somewhat more detail. The behavior of the completed powerhouse cavern has been found to be substantially as predicted by the analysis.

The principle of electrostatic separation is discussed and elaborated on by dividing into the three main mechanisms of electrification as applied to separation of solid substances, i.e., (1) contact electrification, (2) electrification by conductive induction, (3) electrification by ion bombardment. Types of equipment used for electrostatic processing are described and the effects of humidity mentioned. Processing of iron ore, titanium minerals, rare earths and cassiterite is discussed and some existing plants are described.

An oscillational vis cometer has been constructed to measure the viscosity of liquid metals and alloys to 800°C. An enclosed cylindrical interface surrounds the molten sample avoiding the free surface condition found in many previous measurements. Standardization of the apparatus with mercury has verified the use of Roscoe's formula in the calculation of the viscosity. Operation of the apparatus at higher temperatures was also checked using molten lead. Extensive measurements on five different samples of zinc, of not less than 99.99 pct purity, indicate i) impurities at this level do not influence the viscosity and ii) the apparatus is capable of giving reproducible data. The variation of the viscosity ? with absolute temperature T is adequately expressed by Andrade's exponential relationship ?V1/3 = AeC/VT , where A and C are constants and V is the specific volume of the liquid. The values of A and C are given as 2.485 x 10-3 and 20.78, 2.444 x 10-3 and 88.79, and 2.169 x 10-3 and 239.8, respectively, for mercury, lead, and zinc. The error of measurement is assessed to be about 1 pct. Prefreezing phenomena in the vicinity of the freezing point of the zinc samples were found to be absent. AS part of an over-all program of research on various phases of melting and casting nonferrous alloys, a systematic study of some physical properties of liquid metals and their alloys was undertaken in the laboratories of the Physical Metallurgy Division.1,2,3 The most recent phase of this work, on zinc and some zinc-base alloys, was carried out in cooperation with the Canadian Zinc and Lead Research Committee and the International Lead-Zinc Research Organization. One of the properties investigated was viscosity and the present paper gives results on pure zinc; the second part, on the viscosity of some zinc alloys, will be reported separately. Experimental interest in the viscosity of liquid metals has virtually been confined to the past 40 years. The capillary technique was already established as the primary method for the viscosity of fluids in the vicinity of room temperature; all relevant experimental corrections were known and an absolute accuracy of 1 to 2 pct was possible. Ap- plication of the capillary method to liquid metals creates a number of exacting requirements to manipulate a smooth flow of highly reactive liquid through a fine-bore tube. Consequently, the degree of precision usually achieved in the high-temperature field rarely compares with measurements on aqueous fluids near room temperature. However, the full potential of the capillary method has yet to be explored using modern experimental techniques. As an alternative, many investigators in this field have preferred to select the oscillational method. Unfortunately, the practical advantages are somewhat offset by the inability of the hydrodynamic theory to realize a rational working formula for the calculation of the viscosity. In attempting to overcome this restriction many investigators have employed calibrational procedures, even to the extent of selecting an arbitrary formula for use with a given shaped interface. However, where calibration cannot be founded on well-established techniques, the contribution of such experiments to the general field of viscometry is questionable. A critical appraisal of the viscosity data existing for pure liquid metals reveals a somewhat discordant situation where considerable effort is still required to establish reproducible and reliable values for the low-melting point metals. The means of rectifying this situation have gradually evolved in recent years. Here, the theory of the oscillational method has undergone major advances for both the spherical and cylindrical interfaces. The basic concepts of verschaffelt4 governing the oscillation of a solid sphere in an infinite liquid have been adequately expressed by Andrade and his coworkers.5,6 Employing a hollow spherical container and a formula, which had been extensively verified by experiments on water, absolute measurements on the liquid alkali metals were obtained. The extension of this approach to the more common liquid metals has been demonstrated by culpin7 and Rothwel18 where much ingenuity was used to surmount the problem of loading the sample into the delicate sphere. Because of the elegant technique required to construct a hollow sphere, the cylindrical interface holds recognition as virtually the ideal shape. On the other hand, loss of symmetry in one plane increases the complexity of deriving a calculation of the viscosity. The contributions of Hopkins and Toye9 and Roscoe10 have markedly improved the potential use of the cylindrical interface in liquid-metal viscometry. The relatively simple experi-

The phase equilibria of the Hg-Th system over the composition range 0-100 pct Th and temperatures up to 1000°C have been studied for a small-volume, closed system. The solubility of Th in liquid Hg is about 5 pct at 300°C and decreases sharply with decreasing temperature. Two intermediate phases occur, Hg3 Th and HgTh. The structures of these are hexagonal (nonideally close-packed) and face-centered cubic, respectively. The HgTh phase decomposes eutectoidally at 400°-500°C. The solubility of Hg in solid thorium seems to be negligible. AFULL-phase diagram for this system would have to be defined on temperature-composition-pressure co-ordinates. This paper describes the pseudo phase diagram of a closed system, that is, where the alloy enclosed in a small volume equilibrates with a vapor pressure of mercury dictated by composition and temperature. Because of the experimental difficulties in studying a system of this nature, many of the phase relations can only be sketched. Alloy Preparation Alloys over the full range of composition were made from triple distilled mercury and one of two grades of thorium. For the bulk of the work, a calcium-reduced metal in sintered pellet form of reported 99+ pct total thorium content was used. Arc-melted specimens of this thorium gave a hardness of 135 VPN. The microstructure showed small primary dendrites of ThO2. A number of alloy compositions were made with a high-purity, iodide-decomposition thorium metal. The are-melted hardness of a button of this material was 35 VPN. Although the microstructure of the arc-melted specimens showed no dendrites of ThO2, there was definite evidence of an unidentified phase enveloping the grain bound-aries. There were no distinguishable differences between the constitution of alloys made with the two grades of thorium metal. Under normal conditions thorium is not wetted by liquid mercury. The film of ThO2 on all thorium metal cannot be penetrated by either liquid or vaporous mercury. It was therefore necessary to comminute thorium in the presence of mercury under such conditions that oxide films could not reform on the newly exposed metal surfaces. This was accomplished by the use of a high-speed, carbide-tipped rotary cutter incorporated in a chamber purged with argon and connected at the bottom to a demountable Vycor bulb containing a weighed amount of mercury. This experimental device is fully described in a separate paper.1 Alloy compositions were calculated by weighing the empty bulb, the bulb containing the mercury, and the bulb containing the mercury and the thorium chips. Many alloys were analyzed chemically for thorium and/or mercury after subsequent homogenization; the agreement between analyzed and calculated compositions was invariably very close. Bulbs containing the requisite amounts of mercury and fine thorium chips were clamped off, removed to a sealing unit, evacuated and sealed. Amalgamation under these conditions proceeded rapidly even at room temperature. To insure homogeneity, the specimens were annealed to 300-400°C. Alloys containing less than 30 pct Th remained pasty after all treatments, indicating an equilibrium condition of liquid plus solid. Alloys with more than 30 pct Th were transformed into a dark powdery product. These latter specimens were annealed for times of up to 1 week to complete interdiffusion. Many of the alloy compositions are pyrophoric. On exposure to air they oxidize with considerable evolution of heat to a mixture of ThO2 and free mercury. It was mandatory that alloy specimens be handled in a "dry box" purged thoroughly with argon. All X-ray diffraction specimens were powdered, screened, and sealed in capillary tubes within the dry box. Experimental Procedures Thermal analysis experiments, useful only in the mercury-rich region of the system, were conducted with the alloys in their original containers. A reentrant thermocouple well formed an integral part of the bulb. These bulbs were heated in a silicone oil bath and cooled in a dry ice-acetone mixture. The rates of heating and cooling were slowed by immersing the specimen bulb in a larger tube containing silicone oil. This provided a suitable thermal lag. In all tests, pure mercury was run as a basic standard. While the invariant reaction at about the melting point of mercury was detected by thermal analysis, the heat effect at the liquidus was not sufficient to produce an inflection in the cooling curve. It was necessary to determine the liquidus temperatures at the mercury-rich end of the system by "breaks" in electrical reslstivity versus temperature curves for individual alloys. THIS paper presents the design and operation of a frothmeter capable of measuring the frothing characteristics of pine oils and other frothing reagents. The experimental data show that the frothability of pine oil is governed by: 1-rate of aeration, 2-time of aeration, 3-height of liquid column, 4-chemical composition of pine oil, 5-pH value of solution, 6-temperature of, solution, and 7-concentration of pine oil in solution. The effect of mineral particles on the behavior of froth also was studied, and the results can be found in a separate paper.1 The results also show that the relative frothabilities of pine oils in the frothmeter generally correlate with those in actual flotation, provided that other factors are kept constant. In addition to pine oils, the other well-established flotation frothers were tested, and the results are included. In this paper, compressed air frothing is the frothing process performed by means of purified compressed air, whereas sucked air frothing is the frothing process accomplished by purified air sucked into the glass cylinder by a vacuum system. The term vacuum frothing denotes that froth was formed by degassing of the air-saturated liquid under a closed vacuum system. Apparatus The frothmeter, shown in Fig. 1, is capable of reproducibly measuring the volume and persistence of froth as well as the volume of air bubbles entrapped in the liquid and is capable of being used for compressed air frothing, sucked air frothing, and vacuum frothing. Fig. la shows that for compressed air frothing, the apparatus consists of an airflow regulating system, 1-3; a purifying and drying system, 4-8; a standardized flowmeter to measure the rate of airflow from zero to 500 cc per sec, 9; and a graduated glass cylinder, 13; equipped with an air regulating stopcock, 10; an air chamber, 11; and a fritted glass disk to produce froth, 12. The fritted glass disk, 5 cm in diam and 0.3 cm thick, has an average pore diameter of 85 to 145 microns. The pyrex glass cylinder has a uniform ID of 5.588 cm and an effective height of 63 cm. The inside cross-sectional area of the glass cylinder was calculated to be 24.53 sq cm, or 3.8 sq in. For sucked air frothing, Fig. lb shows that the apparatus for compressed air frothing is used again, with the following modifications: 1-compressed air and its regulating system, 1-3, are eliminated; and 2-a vacuum system, 16, equipped with a vapor trap, 15, and a vacuum manometer, 17, is added. The vacuum system can be .either a water aspirator or a laboratory vacuum pump. Any desired rate of airflow can be drawn into the glass cylinder, 13, by adjusting the opening of the air regulating stopcock, 10. The sucked air stream is cleaned by the purifing and drying system, 4-8, before entering the glass cylinder, 13. When this setup is used for vacuum frothing, the air regulating stopcock is closed. The frothmeter has been used for almost 3 years and has proved to give reproducible results, as illustrated in Table I. With a magnifying glass and suitable illumination, the frothmeter also can be used to study the attachment of air bubbles to coarse mineral particles.2 Experimental Procedures Except where otherwise stated, the data presented were established by means of the compressed air method. The volume and persistence of froth were recorded respectively at the end of 4 and 6 min of aeration at a constant rate of airflow of 29.3 cc per sec which is equivalent to 71.6 cc per sq cm per min, or 462.6 cc per sq in. per min. The aqueous solution for each test, containing 1000 cc of distilled water and 19.2 ± 0.5 mg frothing reagent, was adjusted to a pH of 6.9 ± 0.2. The volume of froth is expressed as cubic centimeter per square centimeter and is equivalent to the height of the froth column (the distance between the bottom and the meniscus of the froth). The volume of froth was obtained by multiplying the height of froth by the cross-sectional area of the glass cylinder, 24.53 sq cm. Before each test, the glass cylinder, 13, was cleaned thoroughly with jets of tap water, ethyl alcohol, tap water, cleaning solution, tap water, and finally distilled water. Decarburization in the Fe-C system by oxygen top blowing has been studied in laboratory -scale experiments. It is shown that equilibrium models fail to explain or predict either the course of refining or endpoint conditions, giving results which either are incompatible with the chemistry of the system or do not satisfy material balance requirements. Also the path of decarburization was found to vary even for heats made under apparently identica1 conditions. A promising approach to analyzing the decarburization results is to relate oxygen efficiency fm carbon removal to bath carbon content. This relationship for Fe-C heats shows the same range of oxygen efficiencies as is obtained in pilot-plant and commercial heats using hot metal-scrap charges. This implies that oxygen transfer is primarily controlled by the decarburization reaction itself, independent of other refining reactions. Therefore, it should be possible to study separately decarburization and slag-metal reactions. DECARBURIZATION is probably the most important reaction in steelmaking. Not only is it a main reaction in the refining of iron to steel but it also provides the stirring action in the bath necessary for the diffusion processes to proceed at reasonable rates so as to make a steelmaking process practical. Kinetics of decarburization in the open-hearth process has been a subject of investigation for many years.&apos;-B It is generally accepted that at steelmaking temperatures the rate of homogeneous C-0 reaction is extremely high and cannot constitute a rate-controlling step. Diffusion of oxygen through a boundary film in the metal phase has been suggested by arken&apos; as rate-determining. Recently, Larsen and sordah16 concluded from experiments in a laboratory furnace that, with oxygen supplied from air or combustion gases, the rate of "steady-state" carbon boil is controlled essentially by a diffusion process of O2, Co2, or H2O through a film of nitrogen above the slag surface. Displacing this diffusion film by a stream of nearly pure oxygen produced a ten-fold increase in the rate of carbon boil with the rates of slag-metal oxygen transfer, bubble nucle-ation, and other steps all apparently able to keep pace. In the top-blown basic oxygen process, however, the transport of oxygen takes a more direct route. and the state of bath agitation is much more turbulent than in the open-hearth process. In addition, direct contact of the gas with the metal phase provides opportunity for direct oxidation of carbon. It is likely that the rate-limiting factor for the decarburization reaction will be different. However, only a few descriptive discussions of the subject have been reported in the literature.10-l2 Studies of the decarburization kinetics based on plant or pilot-plant data are necessarily complicated and are influenced by other refining reactions which occur simultaneously. In order to investigate the mechanism of decarburization, experiments have been conducted in which carbon-saturated iron melts were top-blown with pure oxygen over a range of conditions. It is hoped that this study will form a foundation on which a more basic understanding of this important reaction may be built. EXPERIMENTS One group of blowing experiments was made in a standard 200-lb induction furnace and another group in a 500-lb induction furnace. The furnaces were modified to the general shape of a basic oxygen furnace by adding a rammed refractory cone section to the regular crucible body. Crucible and cone were of high MgO (95 pct) material. A water-cooled lance, 1/2 in. in diam and threaded at one end to take a nozzle, was used for blowing oxygen. The lance with its water and oxygen lines was supported on a cantilever arrangement so that it could be moved up, down, or sideways. Oxygen of 99.5 pct purity was supplied from a cylinder and metered through a rotameter equipped with pressure and temperature gages. Another pressure gage was located at the top of the lance. A schematic diagram of the assembly is shown in Fig. 1. Before each experiment, a weighed amount of ingot iron, containing 0.02 pct C, < 0.01 pct Si, 0.10 pct Mn, 0.019 pct P, and 0.015 pct S, was charged in the furnace and melted down by induction heating. THE object of all classification is to group together things which are alike, and separate those which are unlike. This object is essentially a practical one, enabling us to apply past experience to new conditions: Many costly large-scale experiments lose half their importance for want of proper description of the coal used, and the consequent impossibility of predicting other coals will behave in the same way. I do not, therefore, make a fundamental distinction between "scientific" and "use" classifications, except in so far as use depends on conditions, such as size or impurities which are not related to the nature of the coal substance itself. The characters chosen to define the classes of coal must be such as are accompanied by as many other properties as possible. It is not to be expected that any system of classification will enable us to predict every property of coal, since all specimens have an individuality of their own. But specimens can be grouped by a number of resemblances into species. Further, species which resemble each other can be grouped into genera.

In a recent paper the authors1 discussed the reactions to tempering of hypereutectoid steels quenched from 1000&apos; C., as revealed by studies on changes in hardness, electrical resistivity, coercive force and metallo-graphic charaeteristics. The data, which related specifically to tempering temperatures of 550°, 650" and 710" C., for varying periods up to 125 hr., permitted the following important conclusions: 1. The rate of softening of the steels at the temperatures examined differed markedly although the steels were of "similar" general chemical composition. 2. The temperature of maximum softening spread over a range from about 650" C, to the eutectoid inversion. 3. The divergence in behavior was ascribed, at least in part, to a profound difference in tendency to graphitization on annealing at sub-eutectoid temperatures. 4. The mode of spheroidization of the cementite, as revealed by metallographic studies, also varied considerably in the different steels. The purpose of the present investigation is to pursue further the study of the difference in behavior of the steels on tempering over a wider range of temperature. To this end the following features have received particular attention: 1. Comparison of temperatures of maximum softening of the various steels when the quenched samples were tempered for 5 hi. and for 75 hr. followed by furnace cooling and by quenching in water. 2. Deterrnirlation of the effect of quenching temperature, prior to tempering, on the rate of softening. Quenching temperatures of 1000" and 850" C. were used in the investigations. 3. Examination of the microstructures obtained with the various heat-treatments employed.

AT present the demands of the United States for strontium are met by imports from Germany, England and Canada, which vary considerably in proportions of ore and finished salts, in tonnage and in value. Statistics for the period 1926-1932 are given in Table 1. These deposits are large enough to command interest, par-ticularly in consideration of future cheap power at the Boulder Dam. The deposits described in this paper were examined during an investi¬gation of the, mineral resources of the Boulder Dam region by the United States Geological Survey for the United States Bureau of Reclamation&apos; in the spring of 1934. WHEN impure Zn (< 99.99 pct)&apos;&apos;Z or Zn-Cd alloys3 are progressively solidified, a cell or "corrugation" substructure4 is produced in the solid, with a high impurity or solute concentration along the cell walls. When these materials are polished and suitably etched, etch pits are often observed along the cell walls. For the Zn-Cd alloys these etch pits have been associated with decorated dislocations, present in the corrugation boundaries to accommodate the lattice strain. In the course of an investigation of Zn-2 pct Au alloy, molten metal of this alloy was poured into cold water and the resultant solid pieces were sectioned, polished and etched with a Cr0 ethant. An extremely regular cell pattern was observed on the etched surface, similar in general to the corrugation structure previously reported for impure zinc and Zn-Cd alloys. At higher magnification, regularly spaced pits were observed along the cell boundaries. An example of the regular cell pattern at the center of a specimen is shown in the center and lower portions of Fig. 1; the top of the figure shows the pattern near the specimen surface. Typical etch pits in the cell walls are shown in Fig. 2. It was surprising that a cell pattern as regular as that shown in the center of Fig. 1 was produced at the very rapid solidification rates used (estimated as > 1 cm per sec). In addition, the distribution coefficient for the Zn-Au system is greater than 1. Accordingly, the center of the cells should be rich in solute and should etch
