The various methods of by-product coke-manufacture have been quite thoroughly discussed in a number of papers recently published, and I think it would possibly be of interest and value to discuss the growth and probable future of the byproduct coke industry, rather than details of manufacture. The first by-product coke-plant in the United States, consisting of 12 ovens, was put in operation at Syracuse in January, 1893. This installation was followed by one at Johnstown, Pa., in 1895; one at Dunbar, in 1896, and one at Glassport, in 1897. The plant at Syracuse was primarily intended to supply the owners with ammonia for their alkali-works. At Glassport, for the first time, gas was sold for illuminating purposes, although it was mixed with water-gas to make it marketable. The New England Coke & Gas Co. started the plant in Boston in 1899, which was destined to change the whole trend of the establishment of by-product plants, since it manufactured for the first time illuminating-gas suitable for sale without enrichment. This was accomplished by dividing the gas on the battery into two portions. One portion, consisting of the richer part of the gas, was saved for sale, while the remaining, or leaner, portion was used in the battery. This idea was originated by Dr. Schniewind, of the United Coke & Gas Co. The coke was used for domestic, industrial, and locomotive fuel, as its sulphur-content was too high to make it suitable for use in the foundry. The successful operation of this plant led to the building of additional plants at points where the production of illuminating-gas could be sold to advantage and where there was a fair market for the coke-output. The following list of illuminating-gas plants in order of construction will give a good idea of the rapid growth of this method of combined gas- and coke-manufacture: Hamilton, Ohio; Detroit, Mich.; Camden, N. J.; Baltimore, Md.; Chester, Pa.; Milwaukee, Wis.; Duluth, Minn.; Geneva, N. Y.; Chicago, Ill.; Indianapolis, Ind. In addition to these there are now under construction plants at Muncie, Ind.; Joliet, Ill., and Waukegan, Ill., all of which will produce illuminating-gas and metallurgical coke.

Up to now we have spoken optimistically of the many potential savings in capital and operating costs to be obtained from the selection of larger diameter and horsepower grinding mills. Such mills may well be the correct choice for one grinding plant but could be absolutely wrong for another plant. It is emphasized here that many significant factors other than the capital cost, labor, grinding media and power savings are involved in the sizing and selection of the optimum grinding circuit. The following discussion covers some of these factors and their relationship to larger mill design. The first consideration is: What is the grinding circuit supposed to do? In most instances it is one or both of the following: 1. Grind the feed material fine enough to liberate the desired minerals but with a minimum of over- grinding. Examples are preparation of ore for flotation, gravity separation, etc. 2. Grind to some pre-specified particle size or particle surface area. Examples of this are cement manufacture or the preparation of feed material for pelletizing; other examples are preparation for chemical reactions or ceramic manufacture.

For several years the Bureau of Mines at its Northwest Experiment Station, in cooperation with the Mines Department. of the University of Washington, has been studying the breakage and degradation of coal. The first phase of the study was devoted to the determination of the friability of many coals of various ranks and comparison of various methods for estimating friability.' A study of the relative ease or difficulty with which various coals are reduced to the fine size required for use as pulverized fuel followed the completion of this work. Baltzer and Hudson2 list twelve research organizations in the United States, two in England, one in Germany and one in Canada that are reported to be engaged on this problem; showing the general appreciation of the need for a simple method of estimating the grindability of different coals. Hardgrove,3 ho has advanced a method for estimating grindability, points out that pulverizer tests of different coals are incomplete and unsatisfactory. He compares such tests to that of a boiler test made without knowledge of the calorific value of the coal. Frisch arid Holder4 also stress the same point. They state that,

In a recent article, it was shown that in the blast furnaces in Germany that are lined with carbon blocks no cooling plates are used, and that shower cooling is employed on the hearth and bosh sections. While one of the authors was in Germany he was told that one furnace was being operated without even the shower cooling on the bosh section, though the hearth section was shower-cooled. In discussion of this interesting situation with a number of blast-furnace operators in this country, it was made clearly and promptly evident that shower cooling was very unpopular, probably because of its messiness and its ineffectiveness. Both of the causes for the dislike of shower coolings are reasonable ones. Shower cooling can be and frequently is messy, but the present cooling of blast furnaces leaves much to be desired on that score. Shower cooling is ineffective as compared with plate cooling, so far as its usefulness in keeping the bricks cool enough not to melt or fall to pieces is concerned. However, the introduction of carbon linings changes the situation. No one is concerned with keeping a carbon lining cool, for no temperature in the blast furnace has any effect on carbon, which is just as stable at 3000°F. as it is at 70°F. The only concern is for the shell—to keep it cool enough for safety and comfort— and for that shower cooling is sufficient. Of course, with only the shell to cool, instead of the shell plus all the refractory material, much less water would be required, and the necessity for constant attention to the flow would be lessened, as the hundreds of inlets and outlets would be eliminated. Probably half of the water used in cooling a blast furnace is used for cooling the shaft and tuyeres and the remainder for the bosh and hearth sections. However, in view of the dislike of shower cooling in the United States, and particularly because at least one German blast furnace is operated with no cooling of the bosh section, thought was given to the possibility that a carbon-lined blast furnace might be operated without any cooling of the entire carbon-lined portion. For that reason a series of experiments was performed to determine what might be the temperature of the shell of a blast furnace protected by a carbon lining and operated under varying conditions up to a maximum inside temperature of 3000°F. Experimental Procedure A schematic diagram of the experimental setup is shown in Fig. I and a photograph of the entire assembly in Fig. 2. The heating element was a a tubc nominally 25/8 in. 0.d. by 2 in. i.d. by 30 in., used as a resistor. Power was furnished by a I5-kva. transformer operating

Studies have been undertaken to determine the indicidual effects of particle size, degree of long-range ovder, antiphase domain size, and root mean square stran on the microhardness and yield strength of ordered alloys. Dnta have been analyzed for Cu3Pt initzally ordered to a value of 0.82 and after deformations of 1 and 6 pct. It was observed that deformation fleatly reduced the degree of long-range order. Furtherrnore, wztkin this range of relatively small deforntntlons, the average particle size changed very little while the antiphase domain size was greatly reduced. Smultaneosly, the mcrohardness changed by a factor of two durzng the deforrtation process. PREVIOUS studies have reported some of the effects of cold work on the broadening of X-ray diffraction peaks. These investigations were performed on powder and wire samples representing both ordered and disordered states; i.e., the specimens were initially studied in a severly cold-worked condition. By comparing the difference in line shape between the annealed and cold-worked peaks, fundamental information was obtained concerning particle size, strain distribution in different crystallographic directions, degree of long-range order, and change in antiphase domain size. Considerable theoretical work has been done concerning the analysis of diffraction data obtained from cold-worked metals. Stokes' expressed the change in diffraction profiles in terms of Fourier coefficients. Much of the work in this area has been summarized by warren2 in an extensive review article concerning the analysis of plastic deformation by X-ray diffraction. Cohen and Bever3 applied these techniques in studying the effects of cold work on alloy systems exhibiting long-range order. They utilized the Fourier coefficients of fundamental peaks in conjunction with those of the superlattice peaks to determine the change in antiphase domain size. Little work of this nature has been reported for ordered systems that have undergone small degrees of plastic deformation. The purpose of this investiga-tion was to determine the effects of small deformations in such a material with respect to particle size, strain distribution in various crystallographic directions, antiphase domain size, degree of long-range order, and hardness. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE CusPt was used for the initial investigation since the order-disorder transformation takes place with- out a change in crystal structure. The transformation is readily detectable via X-ray diffraction techniques due to the large difference in the scattering factors of copper and platinum. Additionally, the alloy is relatively low melting (approximately 1300°C) and is easily deformable in both the ordered and disordered states. 1) Specimen Preparation and Cold Working. A 100-g, 12-in. diam., cylindrical specimen of Cu3Pt was prepared by melting and casting 99.99 pct pure Cu and Pt i.n vacuo. Prior to any mechanical working, the material was homogenized in a vacuum for 60 hr at 100O0C, and surface defects were removed by machining to a depth of approximately 116 of an in. The material was then cold-rolled, with an intermediate anneal, into a strip approximately 12 in. wide by 14 in. thick. Straightening and flattening removed another 0.025 in. from the thickness. After a recrystallization treatment at 750°C for 30 min, the specimen was slow-cooled from 55OoC, at the rate of 6°C per hr, down to 150°C to induce superlattice formation. This treatment yielded an ASTM grain size of 7 and a degree of long-range order equal to 0.83 0.06. After obtaining X-ray and Knoop hardness data, the sample was cold-rolled approximately 0.75 pct in one pass through a hand-operated jewelers' mill. X-ray and hardness data were again obtained and the specimen was reduced an additional 5.41 pct in a single pass through the mill. 2) X-Ray Measurements. The specimen was examined in the ordered condition and after the two degrees of cold working previously mentioned using a General Electric XRD-5 unit equipped with a spectrometer and scintillation counter. Using Mo-Ka radiation with a zirconium filter, six orders of the 100 reflection were obtained. It was anticipated that point counting would be necessary for an accurate determination of the low-intensity peaks and tails: however, it was demonstrated that, by using a scanning speed of 0.2 deg per min and the appropriate time constant, the recorded data were sufficiently accurate. Thus, for ease of experimental procedure, all peaks were recorded on chart paper. Specimen position in the holder was considered to be insignificant after making a series of measurements of the same peak area in different positions with respect to the beam. Since peak overlapping did occur at high values of 20, it was necessary to separate the peaks graphically prior to analyzing the data in order to minimize this source of error. The peak tails were also carefully drawn to obtain the best possible data. Fourier coefficients of the line profiles were calculated on an IBM 7072 computer, and graphical meth-ods2j3 were employed in analyzing the results. For this type of calculation, in which the line profile is represented by intensities taken at set intervals, the intervals selected must be sufficiently small to give an accurate representation of the line profile. Until recently porous bronzes have found many applications for self-lubricating bearings in the automotive, electrical, household appliance and general machine industries. The bulk of an annual production of several million pounds of copper powder had gone into the manufacture of these articles, of which by now more than a billion are in service. However, the war has brought severe curtailment of these bearings because of the scarcity of the two main constituents, copper and tin. The development of substitute materials of equal or superior properties has led to a large-scale replacement by products made from iron powder. In spite of the diminished interest in powdered copper-tin alloys caused by this trend, it was believed worth while to investigate some mechanical properties of these materials as a reference base for substitutes. In addition, experiments using the hot-press method were incorporated to investigate possibilities of saving vital equipment or opening new fields of applications. It must be assumed that by this time the powder metallurgy process of making porous bronzes, a development that found its first industrial applications more than 10 years ago, is well known in engineering. The patent literature and bibliography is volu- minous, most publications referring to porous, self-lubricating bronzes, containing about 10 per cent tin and I to 5 per cent graphite, with porosities in the range of 25 to 35 per cent.l-7 The excellent antifriction properties of these bearings, caused by the uniform impregnation with oil, are dependent on the interconnection of the pores and the uniform distribution of the graphite inclusions. The sintering mechanism of porous bronze, with its structural changes during the transformation of the metal powder into the sintered bearing has been shown in colored photomicrographs by Hall.* Diffusion between copper and tin was found to begin within one minute, when tin-rich transitory phases were formed. After 25 min. a homogeneous matrix of alpha was reached for an alloy containing 9.5 per cent tin and 6 per cent graphite. Price, Williams and Garrand,9 studying certain metal powder combinations in which sintering is accompanied by the cementing action of a liquid phase, including a 90-10 bronze sintered at 925°C., have found that if the treatment is carried out within the liquidus and solidus temperature range of the system, a peculiar process of alternate solution and precipitation occurs. The particles of the major solid constituent are dissolved in the minor liquid phase, but thereafter are reprecipi-tated on certain nuclei, which develop into large grains, usually rounded.

(written discussion).-The basic requirement in the electrostatic process of electrical precipitation is that gases containing solid particles in suspension are forced to pass through an electrical field consisting of an insulated high-potential wire, or other type of discharge member, and a grounded plate, or other, type .of collecting member. Commercial. operation and efficiency of precipitation are secured by electrical and structural arrangements to provide the maximum value of the variable factors modifying the degree of precipitation. That is to say: 1. A unidirectional flow, of high-potential current is vastly more effective in precipitation than a high potential alternating-current flow.

Introduction The Pueblo Viejo gold-silver mine, located in the Dominican Republic, started production in early 1974 processing ores averaging 4 g/t gold and 20 g/t silver at a rate of 7.25 kt/d. The ore milled is a silicified siltstone with average work index of about 8 that occurs as an extensive oxide capping of a primary sulfide ore body. The sulfide ores are refractory to conventional treatment process and extensive research work is now in progress to develop a treatment process for them. The ore deposit has a long history, having been mined by the indigenous Arawak Indians for some time in the early sixteenth century prior to the arrival of the Spanish, and then by the Spaniards. In the early 1950s, Italian engineers attempted to process the sulfide ores. Mining by the Indians and Spanish was abandoned because of low grade and little coarse gold in the oxide ores and by the Italians because of the refractory nature of the sulfide ore. In 1969, Rosario Resources geologists discovered that there existed sufficient reserves of oxide ore for a viable mining operation and the plant was designed, built, and brought into production.

In the seven years that have elapsed since the AIME World Symposium on Mining and Metallurgy of Lead and Zinc, there have been a number of significant milling innovations and trends implemented in lead-zinc flowsheets to either improve grade and recovery or to control escalating mill costs. First, mill controls and instrumentation, which only had a foot in the door in 1970, have become increasingly common. In Australia, research into automatic crushing control has been implemented by Mount Isa Mines, and in virtually any large lead-zinc mill worldwide, an assortment of on-stream x-ray analyzers, grinding circuit controls, level detection devices, and reagent metering methods can be found. The increased circuit control offered to mill operators by this new technology points to more efficient flowsheets, as well as to a greater dependence upon computer-controlled operation.

Results of two years of leaching of 160 metric tons of low grade industrial copper sulfide waste in a large (40` high 10` diameter) thermally insulated tank at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology are analyzed in the light of a previously developed model of the waste leaching process. It is shown that the model is verified in all major aspects and that the parameters in the model that characterize the leaching of a particular sulfide waste are usefully constrained by the results of the tank leaching experiment. The similarity between waste leaching parameters determined from the tank experiment and from interpretation of the leach behavior of test dumps constructed of similar waste encourages optimism it may be possible to predict the leach behavior of field dumps from suitably interpreted column experiments using the computer model developed.

AS part of a detailed study of the structure of metallic meteorites, the concentration and distribution of iron and nickel in the various phases of meteor -itic iron have been measured using an electron-probe microanalyzer. The specimen used was cut from a position about 3 in. below the surface of the Grant meteorite, a one-half-ton iron specimen (containing 9.35 pct Ni) found in New Mexico some years ago. A photomicrograph showing the general Widmanstztten structure, somewhat typical of iron meteorites, is shown in Fig. 1. The line across which the analyses were made is indicated by arrows. This area was chosen so as to evaluate the iron-nickel concentration in the three principal phases visible in Fig. 1. The Surface Mining Act of 1977 required a study by the National Academy of Sciences regarding the special mine reclamation requirements of Alaska. The status of mines operating and planned in Alaska will be presented. New mines opening in Alaska must establish a baseline inventory of plants and animals in the mine site area as well as determine pre-mining air and water quality. Current work in these areas will be summarized. Reclamation practices in Alaska and other Arctic countries as practiced currently will be described. A summary of current research in Alaska dealing with revegetation on surface mined lanais, re-establishment of animal populations, and water treatment processes necessary in this pristine environment will be discussed. Included will be future predictions of the direction of mine reclamation in Alaska as more mines enter the industry.

The aging characteristics of a titanium alloy containing 13 pct V, I1 pct Cr, and 4 pct A1 have been investigated by hardness measurements, X-ray diffraction, and metallography. The P phase decomposes into 0 + a, and 0 + a, + TiCr, above about 1050°F; below this temperature a transition phase, believed to be w, precipitates first, followed by a, and TiCr,. The observed hardening is attributed to these reactions. Cold working of solution-treated specimens accelerates hardening and raises the hardness level attained. A TTT diagram is proposed. NEW titanium-base alloys, designated as "all-beta," have recently been developed. These alloys contain large amounts of P-stabilizing elements such as molybdenum, chromium, or vanadium. When cooled from the solution temperature, they consist only of P; in particular, the martensitic a,' phase does not form.

AT the meeting of the Institute in New York,, in February, 1880,* I described a process of determining sulphur in metallic sulphides, with especial reference to the determination of pyrites in coal. The process, as then described, is as follows : A solution of sodium hydrate, of 1.25 specific gravity, is saturated with bromine. If an excess of bromine is used it must be neutralized by the addition of a :little more sodium hydrate. The pulverized mineral or coal is moistened with 25 c.c. of this solution and heated, then hydrochloric acid is added cautiously to just acid reaction. This operation is repeated with another 25 c.c. of the alkaline solution, and again rendered acid. The mixture should be kept hot.
