ABSTRACT: In the south of the Island of Gran Canaria (Spain) there appear layers of swelling clays inside volcanic formations of a fonolitic type, down to depths as low as 500 m, with thicknesses of 1 to 3 m. Two tunnels (each of length 1,500 m) have been built in these zones (ignimbrites and swelling clays), work on which started in the ‘70s. The construction has been influenced by phenomena of expansivity and decompression. Presented below are the problems that arose, the field and indoor studies conducted and the numerical optimisation of the lining. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Süden der Insel Gran Canaria (Spanien) kommen im Inneren vulkanischer Formationen phonolithischen Typs in Tiefen von bis zu 500 Metern 1 bis 3 Meter dicke Blähtonschichten vor. In diesem Gelände aus Schmelztuff und Blähton begann man zu Beginn der siebziger Jahre, zwei Tunnel von jeweils 1.500 Metern Länge anzulegen. Die Bauarbeiten standen unter dem Einfluss von Dehnungs- und Dekompressionserscheinungen. Der folgende Text enthält eine Darstellung der aufgetretenen Probleme, der durchgeführten Feld- und Laborstudien und der numerischen Optimierung der Tunnelauskleidung. Dans cette communication on présente les problèmes presentes, les études de chantier et théoriques realicés et l’optimisation numérique développé pour dimensionner le revêtement.

The multidimensional characterisation of processes based on various particle properties is a key requirement for a detailed prediction on certain process streams. To access the relevant particle properties (e.g. particle size, particle density and mineral content) automated mineralogy (i.e. Mineral Liberation Analyser) is applied. The kernel density estimation is used to transfer the received discrete particle data into continuous distributions without the necessity of binning the information and the related loss of information. From these continuous distributions, multidimensional separation curves are estimated. The uncertainty of these representations is tracked via bootstrap resampling. For the evaluation of the separation efficiency of the multidimensional separation curves, the statistical entropy is calculated. The statistical entropy represents a local (for each property combination) as well as a global (for the investigated property range) measure of separation efficiency and can be weighted with various property distributions (e.g. mass or mineral mass distribution) to allow for a comparison of different parameter settings and processes. With the help of a case study of a dry magnetic separation of a cassiterite bearing skarn ore from the Erzgebirge (Germany), the methodology is presented and the results are discussed in detail. Limestone formations in the United States can be subject to relatively high horizontal stresses due to the existence of tectonic loading of the limestone strata. Underground limestone mines use the room-and-pillar method, in which 12- to 18-m-wide rooms are typically excavated. The stability of these excavations can be compromised by the horizontal stress, resulting in a rockfall hazard. Rockfalls are the cause of 15% of all reportable injuries in underground limestone mines. Horizontal stress related damage can occur in the form of guttering along one or more sides of an excavation, roof beam buckling or oval shaped roof falls, with the long axis perpendicular to the major horizontal stress. Numerical analyses show that the pillar layout and orientation of the mine workings have an effect on the horizontal stress distribution within the roof. The effects of high horizontal stresses can be mitigated by orientating the heading development direction parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, reducing the number of cross-cuts and offsetting the cross-cuts to limit the potential lateral extent of horizontal stress related roof falls. The modeling approach described in this paper can be used as a tool to evaluate potential roof failure and optimize the stability of room and pillar layouts.

The South African platinum mining industry is using a number of different mining methods, including variations of the same method, to extract the narrow reef tabular platinum deposits of the Bushveld Complex. These mining methods fall into three broad categories, namely conventional, mechanised and hybrid mining. A question sometimes asked in the industry is whether mechanized mining methods are more efficient than conventional mining methods. An objective answer requires the methods to be evaluated against multiple criteria simultaneously, whereby each criterion has a relative degree of importance in the overall decision. The most efficient method is the one that scores highest on each criterion. However, some of the criteria can be conflicting, such as by increasing dilution the shaft head grade decreases. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) methodology was selected for the study because it is used to solve problems of this nature. A survey was carried out to determine the relative importance of each efficiency criterion by drawing on the knowledge and experience of mine technical services and project management practitioners in the industry. Efficiency data for four different mining methods drawn from the Egerton (2004) study were used as a case study. The conventional mining method ranked as the most efficient mining method from the four methods considered. The exercise indicates potential for the AHP to be used in the South African platinum mining industry as a tool for selecting optimal layout designs, conduct regular evaluation of the performance of production shafts, or objectively evaluate line managers for promotion. The work described in this paper is part of the methodology used in a current PhD research study at the University of the Witwatersrand. Mining professionals recognize the need to continuously evaluate and refine mine planning standards and scheduling. We must examine our current reality, and evaluate the following: •How well do our planning standards represent the actual mining process? •To what extent do they support the requirements of the downstream mining activities? •How we apply them to operational management and control? In most operations, mine-planning standards are global averages. Little differentiation is madein quantifying key planning variables. Often standards used in the long-term, are applied to the short-term, and the standards and scheduling precedents are only reviewed occasionally. Mine-planning standards applied to production schedules are often only focused on the management of functional mining performance, and play no role in managing the requirements of down stream processing. Many mining operations are characterized by high levels of fluctuation, and typically incorporate a wide range of factors and adjustments to compensate for deviations from performance targets, in mining operations as well as for the other business areas. The reason for using global averages is because of a lack of understanding of the causes of deviations that occur through the process, and the impact that they may have on the performance of the business as a whole. Average standards and factors are often used to quantify the variability in a system. From these average values, measurement standards and performance targets are derived for the planning and execution environments. During the execution of a plan/schedule there will be deviation in actual performance and the planned ‘average’ standards. In reality the ‘average’ conditions seldom occur and the impact of variability and interdependency are seldom constant or predictable. The predictability of variability and interdependency is further complicated by the fact that mining conditions have a role to play in the actual production performance, and they too are variable. By developing the throughput knowledge of our production systems, we can better understand the nature of variability and the interdependency within the systems as well as the impact of interdependency between the links in our production chains. With this knowledge, planning standards and scheduling precedents can be better defined and sensibly differentiated. This will improve planning and management of ore utilization, mining production and the effectiveness of processing. As a result the business will be more stable and predictable and business performance will be improved. The purpose of this paper is to describe: •At a high level, the scope for refining and differentiation in mine planning standards, and incorporating geological and plant parameters into mine scheduling. This will improve planning and scheduling and the overall performance of the mine. Given our current level of scientific knowledge and the technological tools at our disposal we should be able to plan and schedule production so that we can manage pro-actively and improve business performance. In doing so we can also improve reconciliation and value tracking through mining and processing •The flexibility and functionality of the XPAC planning and scheduling tool that will enable a throughput management approach.

The effects were studied of the presence of comminuted flint on the rheological characteristics of chalk slurry pumped through a 92-km long pipeline from Kensworth Quarry to Rugby Cement Works in the UK, and their impact on the pipe flow conditions. Flow curves were measured for 63different chalk slurry samples; these were described by the Bingham plastic model. In addition to observing trends in the yield stress parameter and plastic viscosity in the model with variations in both flint concentration and dispersant additive, use was also made of slurry viscosity values at a reference shear rate of 60 s-1for the pipe flow. It was found that chalk slurry viscosity decreases with increasing flint content up to 10% by weight for a given additive concentration, and increases with increasing additive concentration from 0.7 to 1.0%, for a given flint content. The pipeline flow regimes were identified using the critical value of the Bingham Reynolds number for laminar flow breakdown. For Bench 11 (quarry bottom) chalk slurries, it was observed that all sections of the pipeline operate in the turbulent flow regime for the nine different formulations and for the three pipe diameters used along the pipeline. However, this was not always the case for Bench 1(quarry top) slurries. It was therefore recommended that chalk slurries prepared from Bench 1 should not be used because of the strong likelihood that laminar flow conditions will occur owing to the presence of higher clay concentrations within this bench. This, in turn, will lead to an unsafe operation of the pipeline because of the potential for coarse particle settling. Likewise, blending of chalk from Bench 1 with the lower benches such as Bench 11 could be problematic and this requires further experimentation.

This paper reviews the development and suitability of various important thermophysical and electrical properties with respect to base metal mattes. Areas of focus include the critical validation of measurements of viscosity, density, surface and interfacial tension, electrical conductivity, and an overview of the various experimental methods used to determine these properties. Accurate physical property data of mattes are critical in process modelling and computational fluid dynamic modelling of smelting and converting operations employed in the extraction of copper, nickel, cobalt and platinum group metals.

[ ] A multiple-bench slope failure occurred at Letlhakane mine on 14th July 2005. No injuries or damage to equipment was suffered and mining production was not affected. Slope failure was preceded by the precursors of tension crack formation, crack widening and extension as well as slope monitoring targets movement. It was predicted that slope failure was imminent using the Geomos slope monitoring system, though the timing was not certain. The area to be affected by the slope failure was also known before hand as was the slope failure mode. As a result, measures were taken to avoid exposing personnel and mining equipment to the slope failure risk. This paper discusses how the prediction of the slope failure of 14th July 2005 using the Geomos slope monitoring system resulted into avoiding potentially fatal injury, damage to mining equipment and loss of mining production.

The monitoring of rock slopes is a common procedure in the management of hazards associated with slope instability. Slope stability radar has become widely accepted as the state-of-the-art method for management of hazards associated with unstable slopes in open pit mines. This is confirmed by the rapid adoption of the technology since inception in mid 2003, with over 70 GroundProbe slope stability radars now in use at open pit operations throughout the World. The use of a monitoring system such as slope radar to identify slope hazards is only part of the solution to minimise the consequences associated with slope instability. The presence of the hazard must also be effectively communicated to the mine personnel, so that the correct response to the hazard can be enacted, and the risk mitigated to an acceptable level. In some surface mines, due to the geotechnical characteristics of the rock mass, hazards can develop rapidly; with slopes progressing from stability to ultimate collapse in just hours. In these situations, it is vital that efficient systems are developed to evacuate the area of the pit affected. Such a system has been developed by GroundProbe in South Africa, with the vital driving force for the project being provided by the Anglo Platinum Mogalakwena mine operation based at Mokopane. The mine based development of the system was perceived as an essential aspect in the development of the successful system. From an early stage, the mine provided essential input on both hardware and software developments to allow the system to be rapidly integrated into the mining operation. This paper describes the pit evacuation alarm system that was developed and discussed the benefits obtained from a mine based development program.

"South African mining operations depend on the skilled professionals produced through the tertiary education sector. In geoscience courses at the University of the Witwatersrand, which lead into the mining sector, there has been a significant increase in student intake over the past 15 years. This increase has been characterized by a radical shift in demography: in classes where white male students once formed the majority, black female students are now in the majority. This demographic shift appears closely linked to policies addressing issues of social justice and transformation in post-apartheid South Africa. We document this change and consider the role played by employment equity legislation (as in the Mining Charter) and corporate social investment strategies in the mining industry, notably through bursaries offered to black female students. We also look at the changing needs of the industry, where the critical need for managerial skills, not just technical knowledge, is highlighted through data from surveys of past students and industry managers. Our findings indicate the need for a curriculum adjustment to meet these changing requirements, as well as more rigorous selection criteria for bursars than simply gender, race, and appropriate matric results. IntroductionThe South African economy has historically been linked to mining and the exploitation of mineral resources. South African mining operations are dependent on the professional labour that is produced through the tertiary education sector, with critical thinking, teamwork, and the art of negotiation having been identified as the crucial skills required for this industry (Sideropoulos, 2014). Over the past three decades the South African system of education has gone through a period of dysfunction that it is struggling to rectify (Maphai, 2014). This has impacted on the levels of academic preparedness of students applying for places in higher education. Concurrently, government and university policies have widened access to higher education in response to the need to address issues of social injustice and transformation related to South Africa’s history of apartheid. As a result, the number of students admitted to universities has increased dramatically. In the School of Geosciences at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), the increase in student numbers has been accompanied by a significant change in demographics: classrooms which in the past were dominated by white males have given way to classrooms in which black females are often in the majority. This demographic shift is related to legislation such as the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act and the Broadbased Socio-Economic Empowerment Charter, developed to reshape the socio-economic and equity frameworks of the country (Botha and Cronje, 2015). Requirements aimed at transformation in terms of management, skills development, and employment equity, together with corporate social investment (CSI) requirements, have resulted in bursaries being made available to attract students from designated groups, which in turn has increased the number of black students, and notably black female students, taking courses in geosciences. However, due to the economic downturn, instability in the mining industry has recently resulted in the downsizing of some mines, with international investors pulling out of South Africa. This instability resulted in devastating strikes across all sectors of the mining industry (Stewart, 2013) and in Marikana, an important platinum mining area, the strike culminated in a deadly shoot-out between miners and police. The resulting tensions spilled over into the gold mining sector, resulting in further strike action, shaft closures, and retrenchments. These challenges have implications not only for the mining industry in South Africa, but for the tertiary education providers whose graduates would have been absorbed into the mine-related workforce."

The first neutrinos in nature ever detected by man were "caught" in a unique laboratory some 3 km (over 2 miles) underground in one of the world's deepest mine shafts at East Rand Proprietary Mines (ERPM), Boksburg. Only 100 m from where gold is being mined from the rock face a small team of South African and American physicists work on one of the most fascinating and important fundamental research projects that is currently exciting the imagination of the scientific world. Neutrinos are sub-atomic particles just as are protons, neutrons and electrons, but they are unique in that they have neither electric charge nor mass. Cosmic neutrinos travel at the speed of light and penetrate stars and planets. Even a million kilometres of solid lead would not provide a satisfactory shield against them. Stars are believed to "burn" by means of nuclear reactions which produce enormous fluxes of neutrinos. The sun, for example, illuminates the earth with visible light, but also bathes it with neutrinos. After World War II, two American physicists, Profs Frederick Reines and Clyde Cowan, experimenting at a large nuclear reactor, succeeded in obtaining direct evidence of the existence of the laboratory-produced neutrino. It then became very important to establish whether neutrinos also existed in nature. This knowledge would lead to a greater understanding of the forces of nuclear physics, of the behaviour of nuclear particles and, indeed, is also relevant to astrophysics. From the start it was clear that the search for "natural" neutrinos would be difficult. Questions which arose were- * how could they be traced if they were without mass or electric charge? * how could other nuclear particles be screened off? * could these not be wrongly detected, or even prevent accurate detection of neutrinos? Neutrinos were known to be produced along with charged particles, by the reaction of primary cosmic rays with the constituents of the atmosphere. It was also known that when the neutrinos collided with matter, they themselves produced the same type of charged particle which could be detected if the unwanted charged particles from the atmosphere could be screened off. What was needed, therefore, was a laboratory where the particles produced in the atmosphere could be screened out, yet which would receive and detect the particles produced by the neutrons' collision with the matter (solid rock) in the vicinity of the laboratory. This meant that scientists either had to build a laboratory with an enormously thick lead shield for their detection work. . . or they could go as near as possible to the centre of the earth where only charged nuclear particles of the very highest energies could penetrate. ERPM was clearly the most suitable place in the world where so effective a "neutrino trap" could be set. Under more than 3 000 m of solid rock the apparatus for detecting neutrinos is well shielded against unwanted nuclear particles produced in the cosmic radiation which can reach the laboratory only in a steeply vertical trajectory. Other particles are easily stopped by the great thickness of rock. The air-conditioned laboratory is at one end of a 150 m long tunnel, 2,5 m high and wide, blasted from the rock. The electronic recording equipment is housed here, while the rest of the tunnel is filled with the detection system. When a charged particle passes through a detector element, it produces a minute flash of light which is recorded and which triggers a flash-tube array. This then defines the trajectory of the charged particle, which is also recorded on film for analysis. So far 82 neutrinos have been detected, 50 at the present level and 32 at a higher level, and the findings have borne out the physicists' theoretical expectations. In this joint project Profs Reines, J. P. F. Sellschop, Director of the Witwatersrand University's Nuclear Research Unit and M. F. Crouch of the Case-Western Reserve University of Ohio are the Chief Investigators. This unique endeavour has been made possible by financial support from the US Atomic Energy Commission, the University of the Witwatersrand and the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, as well as by the cooperation of the management and men of ERPM.

High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) technology has come a long way in its application for comminution duty in hard rock mineral processing in the last three years. Several major projects in copper, nickel, gold, molybdenum, platinum, and iron ore have opted for this technology. Advances in wear abatement technology have established the HPGR as a reliable machine with the required high utilization and availability. The HPGR captures the imagination as the next step change improvement in ore processing, based on the following benefits: ?Energy efficiency (potentially 10?30% more efficient)?very topical in an increasingly ?green? society, and in times of rapidly increasing energy costs and availability concerns. 2008 has shown this to be especially important in Southern Africa ?High (and stable) throughput with a relatively small footprint ?Lower operation cost ?Liberation benefits ?Creative ?mine-to-metal? system improvements made possible by HPGR. The platinum industry, renowned for its historically conservative approach, has not been left behind with two significant new HPGR installations, one in Platreef application and one in UG2 application, commissioned in 2008. While the decision for the Platreef application was driven primarily by comminution circuit capacity and design imperatives, the UG2 application seeks to develop a flowsheet that will have a significant recovery benefit in addition to capacity increase and reduced operating cost. The Platreef application of HPGR also provides the opportunity to introduce a novel comminution flowsheet and to demonstrate exceptionally low wear rates treating very hard, abrasive and variable ore types. The HPGR lends itself for inclusion in existing SABC circuits to increase the capacity of the plant and mills. With current PGM prices many operations are attracted to the HPGR technology benefits. The HPGR clearly has the potential to transform entrenched opinion and provide decision makers with significant alternative comminution options. This paper aims to provide an overview of the current applications and to speculate on the transforming stimulus that the HPGR exerts on industry.

To relate these theoretical investigations to real practice, knowledge about components, their stochastic nature and stochastic order of appearance is necessary. This paper presents results obtained during the ten-year (1976-85) period of research undertaken in the Polish mining industry by the Mining Mechanisation Institute of the Silesian Technical University, Gliwice, Poland.

"In this investigation, we optimize the grinding circuit of a typical chromite beneficiation plant in India. The run-of-mine ore is reduced to a particle size of less than 1 mm in the comminution circuit and concentrated using gravity separation. The comminution circuit comprises two-stage crushing and single-stage grinding in a ball mill in closed-circuit with a highfrequency screen. A detailed circuit audit was undertaken at the plant to understand and evaluate the performance of the grinding circuit. The audit revealed abnormalities in the process and design parameters which caused high energy consumption, lower throughput, and loss of ultrafine chromite. Laboratory studies indicated the differences in the grinding properties (work index, breakage rate, etc.) and liberation sizes of these ores. Studies also revealed that grinding media size, particle retention time, and pulp density are crucial in coarse grinding. Based on the laboratory grinding and characterization studies; simulation studies were performed to optimize the operating parameters of the grinding circuit.IntroductionComminution is a critical process in mineral processing which strongly influences the economics of production. In mineral processing, particles containing valuable minerals must be disintegrated at a sufficiently fine size to liberate valuable minerals from waste constituents, so that they can be easily separated by an appropriate beneficiation method. The Sukinda chrome ore beneficiation plant utilizes different types of run-of-mine (ROM) ore with different physical properties (viz. grindability characteristics, work index, mineral composition, liberation, chemical composition, etc. for the production of chrome concentrate. In the feed preparation circuit, the ROM ore is crushed and ground to below 1 mm. Grinding in the chromite beneficiation plant is a critical unit operation to achieve the desired product size of below 1 mm and to control the generation of the ultrafine particles. Furthermore, about 40% of total power consumption in the beneficiation plant is accounted for by the grinding of the ore. This implies that any improvement of the circuit performance will lead to an overall increase in productivity."

A method, based on the macroscopic population balance equation allowing the dynamic simulation of a multistage adsorption plant given an arbitrary rate expression, is described. The partial differential equations resulting from this method are simplified using the method of characteristics. The simplified equations can then be solved using standard ODE integration techniques. The procedure is illustrated by means of data typical of a CIP application. Requirements for data structures which allow the incorporation of the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) model (and other unit models) into a general metallurgical simulator are described. Based on these considerations, it is concluded that more generality in the description of distributed quantities such as loading and particle size is provided by the use of mass density at fixed class boundaries, rather than discrete masses within fixed classes as has hitherto been used by ore-dressing simulators.

This paper details the preliminary design work carried out before and during the implementation of an extensive backfilling programme on Cooke 3 Shaft, Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company (Witwatersrand) Limited. The design work is of relevance to any system utilizing a cementitious binder, and the quality control aspects are of particular significance. Problems associated with correlating laboratory results to actual field results are also briefly discussed.

The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of coke particle size on the thermal profile of the charge bed in the sintering process of iron ore. Six different ranges of coke particle size that could be used in practice in the sintering line of Esfahan Steel Company (ESCO) were used while parameters such as ratios and particle sizes of other ingredients, ignition temperature, and suction power were kept constant. Thermal profiles were obtained by measuring the temperature changes at three points in the sintering bed. The influence of coke particle size on rate of temperature rise, maximum temperature of the sintering bed, and the flame front velocity of the sintering bed was determined by analysing the thermal profiles. Moreover, the cold strengths of the sinters were measured using the Tumbler method. The results indicated that the coke particle size has a significant impact on the thermal properties of the sintering bed. Based on the results, a coke particle size between 0.212 mm and 3.350 mm was determined as the optimal range for the specific conditions in the sintering line of ESCO.
