One of the main bottlenecks in the carbon-in pulp process for the recovery qf gold is the elution procedure, which typically requires the heading of caustic cyanide eluants to high temperatures for 16 to 24 hours. The present work demonstrates that sodium sulphide solution as an alternative eluant can effect complete elution in about 4 hours at ambient temperatures. Elution efficiencies of around 100 per cent were obtained in 4 hours with a single pass of eluant containing 0,2 M Na2S and 0,4 NaOH about 10 bed-volumes of eluant The initial rate was slow over the first hour of elution, probably because the activated carbon catalysed the oxidation of sulphide to polysulphide. Elution efficiencies of around 100 per cent were also obtained in less than 4 hours during the batch elution of carbon at liquid-to-solid ratio of about 100. Lower liquid to solid ratio resulted in the re-adsorption of gold, probably owing to the oxidation of sulphide to polysulphide, with the resultant formation of gold complexes that were eluted less readily. Improved rates of elution were obtained at higher sulphide concentrations and pH values greater than about 13. Higher temperatures increased the initial elution rate, but lowered the overall extraction efficiency, probably because of the deposition of elemental gold on the carbon. Variation of the ionic strength by the addition of NaCl had no defect on the elution, which confirms that the elution mechanism in the case of sulphide is different from that when cyanide or I1)1droxide is used as the eluant. It is proposed that the elution of gold by sulphide solutions proceeds by means of an initial step that involves the reaction of polysulphide ions with the adsorbed aurocyanide speeds, forming AuCN on the carbon and thiocyanate in solution. This step is followed by the formation of poorly adsorbed complexes with sulphide ions, such as [AUS3-2]-The presence of polysulphides, whether generated in situ by the catalytic oxidation effect of activated carbon or by the addition of elemental sulphur, reduces the elution rate and efficiency dramatically. This is probably due to the formation of complexes such as AUS-3 and AUS-2 , which have a high adsorption affinity.

Kamoto Copper Company is a copper cobalt mining company established in Lualaba Province of Democratic Republic of Congo under a Joint Venture between Glencore PLC and Gecamines (the state-owned mining company). Operations consist of underground and open pit mines, a concentrator producing sulfide concentrate and oxide ores milled slurry, and a hydrometallurgy plant producing copper cathode and cobalt hydroxides from concentrate and ores. The production capacity is 300 k/a of copper cathode and 35 kt/a of cobalt hydroxide. Since Q4 2020, the Luilu hydrometallurgy plant has experienced operational instabilities due to increase in proportion of dolomite in the ore mined and fed to the plant. This was diagnosed by the significant increase in calcium grade in ore and acid consumption, continuous foaming, and overflow of tanks with subsequent adverse impact on equipment availability due to corrosion caused by acidic spills, structure integrity, and safety concerns around the acidic slurry spills. Production was adversely impact due above equipment availability and often throughput restriction to mitigate the foaming and overflows. A high gangue-acid-consuming ore management programme was developed with the aim of mitigating these impacts. The programme included: (i) use of defoamer agent in leach to stop foaming and overflow, (ii) design of a mechanical solution to leach foaming and overflow, and (iii) froth flotation for copper and cobalt minerals separation from dolomite. Only option (i) is presented in this paper. Through laboratory testwork, pilot-plant testing, plant trial, and full plant implementation, Kamoto Copper successfully implemented a defoamer agent (Kemfoam X9980) dosing at leach, resulting in significant reduction in foaming and overflow of leach reactors and countercurrent decantation thickeners. The optimum defoamer dose rate obtained was 20 mg/L. Since then, the Luilu recovered its operational stability, the corrosion of critical equipment ceased, and availability improved as the acidic leach slurry spills ceased. The constraint on throughput due to leach foaming was addressed and the frequency of sliming events in the thickeners was significantly reduced as the foaming on the supernatant surface ceased, with subsequent significant reduction in interfacial crud in solvent extraction.

Human factors in stope productivity -a field experiment by K. F. MAUER, M.A. (Visitor), and A. C. LAWRENCE, B.Econ., D.Com. (Member) An experiment in which three human variables were manipulated in eight stopes was conducted in a gold mine over a period of roughly six months. The three variables, which each had two levels, concerned the degree of movement from gangs, the quality of the Bantu production supervisors, and the extent to which gangs were composed of a single ethnic group (Malawians). Time was included as a variable with three levels in the analysis of the findings. On the average, stable gangs produced 12 per cent more than gangs with a high percentage of transfers, gangs with better production supervisors were more successful by nearly 9 per cent than those with poorer production supervisors, and homogeneous gangs were more productive than heterogeneous ones by as much as 15 per cent. In addition, it was found that a number of the variables exercised a joint influence on stope productivity and that the effects of the variables were accentuated by the len gth of time they had been in operation. "The hot deformation behaviour of Nb-Ti microalloyed high-strength steel was investigated. Hot compression tests were conducted in the temperature range 900 to 1100°C under strain rates of 0.1, 1, and 5 s-1. Dynamic recrystallization (DRX) occurs as the main flow softening mechanism at high temperature and low strain rate. The hot deformation activation energy was calculated to be about 404 699 J/mol. The constitutive equation was developed to describe the relationship between peak stress, strain rate, and deformation temperature. The characteristics of DRX at different deformation conditions were extracted from the stressstrain curves using the work hardening parameter. The Cingara-McQueen equation was developed to predict the flow curves up to the peak strain. The processing maps were obtained on the basis of a dynamic materials model. The results predict an instability region in the temperature range 1010 to 1100°C when the strain rate exceeds 0.78 s-1. IntroductionThe 700 MPa grade HSLA steel is widely used in engineering machinery, automotive beams, carriages, and axle tubes, etc. (Pan et al., 2017 ). Generally, such grades contain a moderately high amount of Mn (approx. 1.4% and above), and microalloying elements like Nb, Ti, V, and Mo to impart the desired strength and toughness through solid-solution strengthening, precipitation hardening, and grain refinement dislocation strengthening (Chen and Yu, 2012; Opiela, 2014). However, the production costs can be greatly reduced by replacing part of the Nb, V, or Mo with inexpensive Ti and adopting the compact strip production CSP process (Opiela, 2014; Chen et al., 2015). Furthermore, the microalloying technology coupled with new-generation thermomechanical control processing (NG-TMCP) has proved efficient for achieving the proper balance between strength, toughness, ductility, and formability by means of a suitable combination of chemical composition and thermomechanical treatment parameters (Shukla et al., 2012; Wu, Zhou, and Liu, 2017).In hot forming processes, the complex microstructural evolutions are often induced by multiplicative hot deformation mechanisms, such as work hardening (WH), dynamic recovery (DRV), and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) (Zhang et al., 2014; Liang et al., 2015). Dynamic softening behaviour during hot processing has generated considerable interest because component properties are influenced significantly by its corresponding microstructural evolution (Wu et al., 2010). During deformation in the DRX process, deformed grains are replaced with substructures and newly formed fine and uniformly distributed grains. This occurs only when a critical strain for the onset of DRX is reached, and at the same time, the minimum rate of energy dissipating is reached (Ferdowsi et al., 2014). DRV occurs at a high strain rate and low temperature, reducing the stored energy greatly and making DRX difficult (Liang et al., 2015). The microstructural changes during DRX are sensitive to the processing parameters, such as strain rate, deformation temperature, and strain (Zhang et al., 2014; Ferdowsi et al., 2014). Therefore, in order to optimize the hot processing parameters, it is important to understand the behaviour of hot deformation visà- vis control of microstructural evolution."

Mining companies are required by law to improve representation of women on their boards. However, progress in this regard has been slow. Boards of directors play an important role in formulating corporate strategy, risk assessment, and effective governance for sustained financial performance. Although some women have successfully maintained board seats, others have been unable to do so. It is difficult to ascertain whether women are being appointed as tokens to satisfy social pressures, as little is known about the experiences of women board members in mining, which may inform or refute tokenism. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 women and 16 men across six listed mining companies. Thematic data analysis revealed evidence of tokenism where recruitment to mining boards is compliance-based and is informally driven by influential directors. Adverse boardroom experiences that further confirmed tokenism were reported by women, such as disregarding their contributions, condescending behaviour, and limited influence in decision-making, while other women sought to validate their competence and oppose social exclusion. This study recommends that a strong Board Chair and nominations committee is critical to ensure sustainable recruitment of competent and suitably qualified women; and further foster a culture of inclusivity and valuing gender-diverse boards.

"Global demand for the three platinum group metals (PGMs) Pt, Pd, and Rh has been steadily growing due to their widespread use in emission control, industrial catalysis, and numerous other applications. The primary supply of PGMs is currently the mining industry. However, legislative, operational, and environmental challenges faced by many mining operations result in erratic supply patterns and deficits for these three metals. Naturally, recycling scrap material to recover Pt, Pd, and Rh has therefore aroused research interest in the scientific and engineering communities. Given that the majority of the global demand for these three metals is driven by emission control devices, autocatalytic converters are therefore a significant source of already processed and beneficiated PGMs for recycling.Although pyrometallurgical processes dominate the recycling industry, hydrometallurgical processes may offer certain advantages, chief among these being lower emissions and reduced energy consumption. In this investigation, scrap converter material was leached in acidic chloride media and the leach liquor subjected to solvent extraction and cloud point extraction (CPE) to recover the PGMs. The recoveries for Pt and Pd using Alamine 308® dissolved in kerosene with decanol as a modifier were 95% and 81%, respectively. The maximum recoveries using CPE after complexation with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (2-MBT) in the presence of Triton X-100 and tin (II) chloride dihydrate as a reductant were 97% for Pd, 96% for Pt, and 91% for Rh. This demonstrates that CPE, although relatively new, may have some potential as a breakthrough PGM recovery technology. IntroductionPlatinum group metals (PGMs) have found a wide variety of applications in different industries due to their chemical, catalytic, and physical properties. PGMs are essential in automobile emission abatement, petroleum refining, and the pharmaceutical and electrical industries (Carabias-Martinez et al., 2000). However, the abundance of PGMs in the Earth’s crust is low and their primary sources are fast depleting (Crundwell et al., 2011).The high demand for PGMs, together with social, economic, environmental, and political aspects related to their production, has led to concerns about their future supply. This has resulted in renewed interest in recycling end-of-life material. PGM supply from recycling has doubled over the last decade, and currently contributes 22% to global supply (Johnson Matthey, 2016). This is in part due to the environmental, social, and operational challenges associated with mining of PGMs. For example, labour unrest, energy cuts, declining commodity prices, and declining ore grades have collectively made the mining landscape economically challenging (KPMG, 2015). On the other hand, the high content of PGMs in secondary sources makes their recovery from the increasing quantities of waste products important from a resource conservation viewpoint. Moreover, PGMs obtained through recycling have been demonstrated to have a 1% environmental cost from a life-cycle perspective, whereas PGMs obtained from mining contribute the remaining 99% of environmental cost (Bossi and Gediga, 2017). Sustainable resource recovery and the economic incentive of recycling have therefore been major drivers to justify investment in PGM recycling. The autocatalytic converter industry accounts for about 70% of the global consumption of these metals (Johnson Matthey, 2016) and therefore recycling spent converters has become a major source of Pt, Pd, and Rh (Figure 1)."

After question time, Mr Hector, Witbank Town Engineer (visitor) thanked Dr Stander. The meeting closed at 7.10 p.m.

Written contribution by J.F. Curtist The paper is an interesting exercise in the application of mathematics to a theoretical situation presumed to oc¬cur underground. However, some of the assumptions on which the calculations are based are unlikely to occur in any actual mining situation. Assumptions made in the paper Objections to these assumptions are noted seriatim. (1) `it is assumed that any loading-rate effect will be small and can be ignored' (p. 3). A loading rate of the order of 50 kN-12 per cent of the maximum load-is customary to prevent the props being dislodged by the blast. (2) `it is unlikely that all the props will be installed with their full stroke available, but for the purpose of this analysis, it is assumed that this is the case' (p. 3). A more reasonable assumption would be that, with the most careful selection of prop length and the most rigid control of stope width, the available stroke length would on average be reduced by the order of 70 mm on installation-20 per cent of full stroke. (3) `each support unit supports a block of 3,3 m2 bound¬ed by vertical fractures with zero cohesion that are parallel and at right-angles to the stope face respec¬tively' (p. 5). Joughin and Jager have shown this to be an unwar¬ranted assumption in respect of the positioning, the direction, and the dip of the fractures present in a stope in rockburst conditions. If, as assumed, there was `zero cohesion' between such blocks, the removal of a hydraulic prop in row 3 supporting such a block would ensure that it fell out before a profile prop could be installed in the same position. (4) `the height of each of these blocks is 3,0 m, the volume of each block is 9,9M3, the mass of each block is 27 225 kg' (p. 5). The concept of individual props being affected by dis¬crete blocks of known and uniform dimensions of relatively low ground velocities (less than or equal to 2,16 m/s) acting in line with the axis of the prop is one that lends itself to neat mathematical calcula¬tions. It does not, however, bear much similarity to the actual conditions that are exposed underground in excavations where rockbursts occur. The aim of this work was to compare the corrosion behaviour of thermal spray WC ? based coatings before and after annealing. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to determine the phases present in the coatings at various stages. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was measured using electrochemical and immersion corrosion tests. The results obtained from electrochemical corrosion (quantified by corrosion current density) and immersion corrosion tests showed that annealing appears to decrease the corrosion resistance of the coatings. From the XRD results it was determined that the phases that corroded preferentially were cobalt (Co), eta (Co6W6C) and W2C. Keywords: Corrosion, thermal spray, coatings, hardmetals.

Compared with sinusoidal oscillation, non-sinusoidal oscillation enhances the ability to control waveform and meets different oscillation requirements by adding an independent parameter, which is the key technology for high-efficiency continuous casting. A new waveform of mould non-sinusoidal oscillation is proposed in this paper, that is, a velocity waveform that is composed only of straight lines and parabolas, which not only has good dynamic characteristics, but also further enhances the feature of non-sinusoidal oscillation. Compared with sinusoidal oscillation, the negative strip time is reduced by 15.9%, the maximum negative strip velocity difference is increased by 38.3%, and the maximum positive strip velocity difference is decreased by 27.8%. The formulas of oscillation process parameters can be clearly deduced, and the isoplethic curves of oscillation process parameters when multi-parameter simultaneously changes are drawn. The negative strip time decreases as the modification ratio, frequency, and casting speed increase, but increases as stroke increases. In order to maintain the stability of negative strip time, an oscillation synchronous control model for optimising oscillation basic parameters was developed. Through practical application, the mean oscillation mark depths decreased by 10.1 μm and the flux consumption is increased from 0.37 kg/t to 0.45 kg/t in the non-sinusoidal oscillation model, which meets the requirements of normal production.

Computer control of flotation at the Ecstall concentrator By M. P. AMSDEN, C. CHAPMAN, and M. G. READING Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, operates the Kidd Creek Mine, a 10000 tons per day base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different types of ore are mined and milled: copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous on-stream X-ray analysis. Recently this system was automated further by the addition of computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery by 1,1 per cent, zinc recovery by 1,4 per cent, and have reduced reagent costs by 16 per cent. Although not expected, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved slightly as well.

"Both Polish and European hard coal mining nowadays faces the need of deepening shafts (significantly in some cases) or extending mining hoists, due to the exploitation of deeper coal deposits.In order to protect the crew working within a shaft, rope safety platforms (artificial shaft bottoms) are employed. Old solutions, based on rigid steel constructions with the external damping layers made of e.g. slag and up to several tens of metres long, are intended to absorb the energy of approximately 5 t mass falling a distance of 700 m. However, current requirements often assume a drop of 20 t to a depth of 1000 m or even more.More modern safety platform structures, made of one or more support rings with steel ropes stretched on them (rope platforms), are more compact (up to 3 m high) and lighter than traditional solutions. Multi-ring rope platforms with additional damping layers filling the empty spaces between the ropes are able to absorb sufficient energy to meet the current requirements.Single- and double-ring platforms have been employed in Poland to absorb the energy of approximately 5 t dropping to a depth of 900 m. They have been developed (and some have already been implemented) by SADEX Ltd. and are protected by various patents and patent applications.This paper presents a design for a triple-ring platform structure with six rope nets. FEM analysis was used to model the performance of the platform. According to the simulation, a 20 t mass falling from 1000 m (>100 m/s) will destroy all the nets, breaking most of the ropes and deforming the support steel boards placed on the nets, but will ultimately be stopped by the platform, as its kinetic energy falls to zero."

Coal spontaneous combustion in longwall gobs is a major concern in coal mines. In comparison to other hazards, this phenomenon is difficult to detect. Fifteen factors influencing coal spontaneous combustion in longwall gobs were identified from the literature. The logical relationships between these factors were evaluated and quantified by decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) and interpretive structural modelling (ISM) methods. A four-level hierarchical structure model was established. The research shows that combining DEMATEL and ISM can reveal the key factors that influence coal spontaneous combustion in longwall gobs and establishthe interactions and relationships among these factors. The results can provide the basis for preventing and controlling coal spontaneous combustion in longwall gobs.

The magnetic field characteristics due to electromagnetic stirring in the secondary cooling zone of an extra-thick slab during continuous casting are numerically determined using Maxwell's equations, with particular emphasis on the distribution of magnetic induction intensity and electromagnetic force, as well as the influence of process parameters on the magnetic field. The orientation of the electromagnetic force is the same when the electromagnetic stirrers at the 30° and 60° posistions of the arc-shaped slab are powered in the same direction; otherwise, the orientation is opposite. The magnetic induction at the centre of the section of the stirrer's central axis at the 30° positio, as well as the current, frequency, and fitting formulae, are as follows: B = {0.075I.(1/A)-0.3} mT and B = {-1.75f.(1/Hz)+22} mT. The electromagnetic force and current fitting formula at the central point of the B-B section is F = {0.03168I2.(1/A2)-03.762I.(1/A)+326.7} N/m3, and the fitting formula of electromagnetic force and frequency at the centre point is divided into two segments. The first takes the form of a parabola: = {-21((f-4.3).(1/Hz)2)+970} N/m3, and the second segment is negative linear: F = {-1.65f.(1/Hz)+51.5} N/m3.

The removal of calcium from the retentates of reverse osmosis (RO) treated minewater is desirable since it allows the recovery of both additional potable water (through RO) and higher-purity salts (in downstream processing). This, in turn, reduces the need for costly and unsustainable evaporation ponds and enhances the economics and operability of potential zero-liquid discharge downstream processes, e.g. evaporative-, cooling- and eutectic freeze-crystallisation. For this study, a multi-component retentate high in sodium content was considered, typical of those emanating from minewater reclamation plants in Mpumalanga, South Africa. Four technologies were evaluated to remove calcium: gypsum precipitation by addition of lime; calcium carbonate precipitation by addition of soda-ash; heating crystallisation of calcium sulphate anhydrite; and cooling crystallisation of gypsum. Full processes were developed and simulated using electrolyte thermodynamics. Using the results of these simulations, capital- and operating costs, as well as revenues were calculated and used in economic comparisons of the processes. Sensitivities to key purchasing and selling prices were also investigated to understand the impact of changes in these variables. For the case of a low magnesium-to-sodium ratio in the feed, gypsum precipitation through lime addition was found to have the lowest operating and total annualised costs; but, if revenue could be derived from the sale of sodium sulphate, calcium carbonate precipitation through soda-ash addition was favoured. Open pit slope stability analyses for large scale instabilities are often carried out using limit equilibrium, finite element or finite difference computer programs. All of these require empirical estimates of rock mass shear strength when calibrated values are not available, which is a common occurrence. A common method of estimating rock mass shear strength is the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, which often over- or underestimates rock mass shear strength when used in limit equilibrium or elastic linearly plastic slope stability analyses, resulting in published alternative estimates for the coefficients of the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. This paper investigates the differences between limit equilibrium and elastic linearly plastic slope stability analysis based on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The investigation consisted of a comparison of 3840 RS2 finite element analysis models completed with strain softening, and 216 Slide2 limit equilibrium models. The models were used to evaluate a methodology to determine equivalent limit equilibrium and elastic linearly plastic shear strength parameters that provide the same stable slope angles and instability back break distances as the more representative strain softening stress analysis methods. This paper presents the methodology and compiles the results into design charts and equations for equivalent limit equilibrium Mohr-Coulomb shear strength parameters, that simplify calibration against actual case studies. The results compare well with older empirical shear strength estimates, however, a detailed calibration of the results against case studies will need to be carried out. The analysis also did not consider pore pressure effects; this is left for future publication.

TiB2 and CeO2 particle-reinforced Al6061 hybrid composites were manufactured using stir casting and hot rolling techniques. The base alloy and composites were hot-rolled at 500ºC and a 50% reduction was achieved through 12 passes. The effect of varying TiB2 and CeO2 particle additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Al6061 matrix was studied. Scanning electron microscopy showed uniform dispersion of both the reinforcements, with good interfacial bonding. Microhardness and tensile properties like yield and tensile strength were found to be higher for hybrid composite with 2.5% TiB2 and 2.5% CeO2 compared to Al6061 alloy and other hybrid composites. The increased tensile strength is attributed to good dispersion and interfacial bonding between the particles and Al6061 matrix. Fracture analysis using a scanning electron microscope revealed ductile fracture for the Al6061 alloy and mixed characteristics of ductile-brittle fracture for hybrid composites

Several possible physico-chemical properties of composite electrodes for oxygen evolution are presented to describe experimental data for which a mathematical model had been developed. On this basis, local electrical and electrochemical properties of a composite electrode were investigated with conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). It could be shown by CAFM measurement that the boundary between matrix and catalyst particles seemed to have special advantageous electrical properties. The SECM measurements showed the presence of mass transport phenomena with increased surface concentrations, whilst the thickness of the Nernst diffusion layer was very small. An intermediate was detected and assigned to be hydrogen peroxide. From all species involved in the oxygen evolution reaction (H2O2, H+ and O2), it was concluded that local active spots exist on the electrode on which hydrogen peroxide reacts to oxygen and protons. A two?step two-material process was suggested to explain the whole oxygen evolution mechanism.
