The heals of formation at 78", 195, and 273°K of the ternary compound h3SbTe2 based on the elements and based on the binary compounds In Sb and [inTe have been measured. The heats of formation at these temperatlcres of the binary compounds In Sb and In Te based on the elements have also been determined. Heal contents and free energies of the three compounds have been calculated from 0° lo 80I)°K. The free energies of joyrrzalion, heats of formations, and entropies of formation at 298°K have also been calculated. The results shown that the tertnary compound is metastable with vespecl to InSh and ln Te below 696 °K. bul is slable above that temperature. The weaker bonding of results in a positice entropy of formation which with incrensirzg temperature makes increasing negative conlvihtclions to the free energy and above 696°K renders the compound slable. THE ternary compound In3SbTez occurring in the quasi-binary system In Sb- In Te' forms on cooling at 829°K by a peritectic reaction.' Observations at 673" and 573 K have shown that this ternary compound decomposes slowly into the binary compounds InSb and1n~e.l'' It has not been possible to analyze the metastable behavior of the ternary compound because up to the present time data on its thermodynamic properties have been lacking. Some information on the binary compounds, however, is available. The heat of formation of InTe at 273°K and its free energy at 673°K are kn~wn.~'~ The heats of formation of InSb at 78", 273', 298", and 723°K have been measured5-' and its heat capacity between approximately 12" and 300"Kg9l0 is also known. In the investigation reported here the heats of formation at 78% 195% and 273°K of the ternary compound In3SbTez have been measured. The heats of formation of the binary compounds InSb and InTe at these temperatures have been obtained by combining new calorimetric results with previously published data. The heat contents and free energies of the three compounds at various temperatures from 0" to 800°K have been calculated. Against the background of this information, the metastability of the ternary compound will be discussed. 1) EXPERIMENTAL 1.l) Preparation of Specimens. The materials used consisted of the elements indium, antimony, and tellurium, the binary compounds InSb and InTe, and the ternary compound In3SbTez. The elements, obtained from American Smelting and Refining Co., had a nominal purity of 99.999+ pct. The compound InSb was Cominco semiconductor grade; the compound InTe was prepared from the elements by melting under a vacuum of 10-h m Hg followed by slow cooling. Three batches of specimens of the compound In3SbTez were used. One batch was prepared by melting appropriate amounts of the elements in an evacuated and sealed Vycor tube. The melt was held at approximately 100°K above the liquidus for about 8 hr, shaken repeatedly, and quenched into a mixture of ice and water. The specimen was annealed in vacuum at 760°K for 4 weeks. In preparing a second batch, a mixture of the component elements was melted and quenched in water. The resulting ingot was powdered. The powder was pressed into pellets, which were annealed in vacuum at 748" to 773°K for 4 weeks. A third batch was prepared in the same manner as the second, except that the starting materials were InSb and InTe rather than the elements. Metallographic examination of samples of the three batches and X-ray diffraction examination of a sample of the second batch did not reveal evidence of microsegregation or a second phase. The results obtained with the three batches showed no systematic differences. 1.2) Calorimetry. The calorimetric method has been described in detail." Samples of the compound In3SbTez, mechanical mixtures of InSb and InTe in the proportion of 1:2, and mechanical mixtures of indium, antimony, and tellurium in the proportion of 3:1:2 were added to a bismuth-rich bath at 623°K in a metal-solution calorimeter. These additions were made from 78°K (liquid nitrogen), 195°K (dry ice and acetone), and 273°K (ice and water). The heat effects of the additions were measured. The difference in the heat effects of the additions of a compound and the additions of the mixtures of its constituents, adjusted for differences in the concentration of the bath, is the heat of formation of the compound. In the concentration range not exceeding 1.5 at. pct solute, the heat effect of the additions was a linear function of concentration. The heat of formation refers to the temperature from which the additions were made, namely, 78", 195", or 273°K. Several calibrating additions were made in each calorimetric run. The calculated heat capacity of the calorimeter and hence the calculated heat effects of the additions of samples depend upon the values adopted for the heat contents of the calibrating substance. In this investigation bismuth at 273°K was used and a value of 4.96 kcal per g-atom was taken for (HGZ3"k . 2) RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 2.l) Heats of Formation. Measurement of zeta potentials is a useful tool to study the surface chemistry of minerals under flotation conditions. Because there is continued interest in this approach, the apparatus for obtaining zeta potentials of nonconducting solids by the streaming potential method is outlined here. Fig. 1 illustrates the streaming potential apparatus. The streaming potential cell or plug consists of two 24/40 standard ground joints (4) joined with a piece of pyrex tubing 60 mm long and 12 mm in diam (5). The electrodes are made of bright platinum disks 19 mm in diam and 1 mm thick through which 0.5-mm holes have been drilled (6). To the surface of each is welded a piece of 80-mesh platinum gauze. Each electrode is permanently mounted on the ends of the inner parts of the two standard joints by means of a platinum wire (7) which connects it to the tungsten seal at the end of the cell (8). For ease in cleaning and handling the apparatus, the streaming cell is fastened to the 500-ml reservoir flasks (1) by means of two 18/9 ball and socket joints (2). This particular arrangement permits passage of the solution in either direction through the plug of particles. Flow of solution can be stopped by a stopcock (3). One of the reservoir flasks has a large opening to permit insertion of either a thermometer or a pair of electrodes for measuring pH of solutions within the system. In making the experiments, the plug is filled with 48 to 65-mesh particles, but a layer of 28 to 35-mesh particles is placed at each electrode to prevent any of the finer particles from passing through holes in the electrodes.

IT is customary to plot crystallographic planes or axes on a Wulff stereographic net which is ruled with parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude. If a single crystal is placed at the center of a sphere, the coordinates of a crystallographic plane or axis are the coordinates of the point where the axis intersects the sphere. The standard (HKL) projection is the projection for which the sphere is rotated so that the (HKL) pole is at the center of the projection. Schiebold and Sachs' and many others have published standard projections for the more important planes of a cubic crystal. With Tables I and 11, it is possible to plot any plane (HKL) of a cubic crystal on a standard (001) projection if the absolute values of the individual H, K, and L are nine or less, which is almost always the case. Using the methods outlined by Barrett,' the standard (001) projection can be rotated so that any arbitrary plane is at the center of the projection. The tables are believed to be important for two reasons: 1—The heretofore published standard projections usually are not of the proper size to fit the stereographic nets available. With these tables a standard projection can be made which will be of exactly the proper size for the available stereographic net. 2—With the tables, planes that do not appear on the previously published standard projections can be easily plotted. For these reasons, the tables are especially useful in the study of optical reflections from etched surfaces and can also be used to make a standard projection for the axis which is normal to the macroscopic surface. (This axis can be found by X-ray or optical methods.) Then if the crystal is etched, the effect of the etchant can readily be determined by comparing the latitude and longitude of the reflecting planes (as determined with an optical goniometer) with the standard projection that has been prepared. A thoroughly modern coal-handling system has been installed at the Pittsburgh Terminal H. H. &. Coal Co.'s new No. 8 shaft, or Cover-dale mine, about 11 mi. (17.7 km.) from Pittsburgh on a spur of the Montour R. R. The Pittsburgh scam, which is the one worked, is reached at a depth of 342 ft. (104 m.). Power is delivered to the mine at 22,000 volts over a transmission line of the bow-arrow type of construction. A private telephone line connecting the various mines and the main office in Pittsburgh is carried on the same poles. The high-tension line is brought to an outdoor, step-down, transformer substation, where three 833-kv.-a., single-phase, 60-cycle, oil-insulated, self-cooled transformers reduce the potential to 2300 volts. The transformers are protected by electrolytic, aluminum-cell lightning arresters, horn gaps, and choke coils. High and low-tension busses, together with fuses, choke coils and air-break horn-gap switches with thcir remote-control operating mechanism are mounted on a substantial structural-steel tower 25 ft. (7.6 m.) in height. Mine Substation The transformer substation is adjacent to a. pressed-brick building that houses direct-current substation equipment together with switchboards, etc., for the control and distribution of power. This building also contains the hoist for the men and supplies. Main Switchboard The 2300-volt circuit is carried underground in a conduit from the transformer substation to an oil switch in the substation and supply hoist building. This is the main switch controlling the 2300-volt busbars mounted back to a twelve-panel black-slate switchboard. From the switchboard, 2300-volt circuits are carried to transformers feeding the street and house lighting systems and to other transformers furnishing power for the elevator and lighting circuits in the store building. This paper deals with the Asarco method for the determination of equipment availability. It is apparent that no single availability equation will provide all of the information necessary for the complete record of equipment availability. In the Asarco system, three separate availability records are carried on major equipment. The first is mechanical availability, the second is operational availability, and the third is a historical record of equipment use. The derivation of the three items and the definitions of the time elements used in the various availability equations are presented and discussed. The Mission unit of American Smelting and Refining Co. is located in Pima County, Ariz., approximately twenty miles southwest of Tucson. The unit consists of an open pit copper mine and concentrator. The concentrate is shipped by rail to company smelters at Hayden, Ariz., or El Paso, Tex. Mine stripping began at Mission in the fall of 1959, and construction of the 15,000 tpd concentrator was started in the spring of 1960. The first ore was treated in midsummer of 1961 and full ore production was reached in August 1961. At that time over 46 million tons of material had been moved from the pit. Current production (ore and waste) averages over 100,000 tpd. Total production to date (ore and waste) is over 120 million tons. The present-day Northumberland gold mine is one of the deposits generally characterized as a Carlin-type occurrence. It lies at the crest of the Toquima Range in Nye County near the center of Nevada. Gold mineralization occurs in two modes, in argillaceous and in silicified limestones, and is generally very fine-grained or micron gold. The Northumberland district has had a history that is typical of many western gold districts: minor production prior to World War II and intermittent exploration thereafter until a combination of geological insight, improved economics, and the advent of heap leach technology created the Northumberland gold mine. Nye County, Nevada, was sparsely populated and little explored in the early years of the settlement of the west; the Northumberland district was not established until 1866. Initial interest was in silver and the district operated as a very small producer for the next seventy years. The disseminated gold occurrences in silicified limestones were recognized and Northumberland Mining Co. was organized to develop the property in the late 1930s. Northumberland Mining Co. actually conducted drilling operations (over 200 drill holes) and mined from small open pits in the silicified limestones. They ultimately produced almost 936 kg (33,000 oz) gold before being shut down by War Production Board Order L-208 in 1942. After World War II gold mining activities were essentially nil for over a decade due to the poor economics of gold production. The property was, however, a known gold producer and attracted recurrent exploration attention. About 45 holes were drilled under the direction of Peter Joralemon for private interests between 1959 and 1963. Next Kerr McGee drilled about 25 holes during 1963 and 1964. Some- what later, in 1968, Homestake drilled 20 holes. The property was then acquired by Idaho Mining Co. which drilled about 30 more holes between 1972 and 1974. By this time the Northumberland mine was becoming somewhat shopworn with over 300 holes drilled. Interest in gold prospects was increasing substantially in Nevada, how- ever, due to rising gold prices in late 1974, and several companies were interested in continuing exploration at Northumberland. In 1975 Cyprus Mines Corp. was successful in obtaining a joint venture arrangement with Idaho Mining Co. for further exploration and development of the property. The overall Cyprus exploration program was under the direction of James G. Hansen, Vice President Exploration. The geologist recommending acquisition of Northumberland was Peter E. Chapman who reported to Joseph E. Worthington, Manager of U.S. Exploration for Cyprus. The basis for selection of the Northumberland mine as an exploration target for Cyprus by Chapman was essentially prior knowledge of regional and 16cal geology and of the mine. Exploration for the next few years was directed by Chapman under the supervision of Worthington. During 1975 and 1976 rotary and check core drilling were conducted that indicated that a substantial Carlin-type or disseminated, low-grade gold deposit occurred in two separate bodies. Drilling was based on geologic mapping and rock chip geochemical sampling. Both ore zones were reflected at the surface as gold and arsenic anomalies in rock chips. Heap leach tests attempted in 1977 were aborted by a flash flood, but were completed in 1978. Engineering studies occupied the next couple of years until the property achieved production in the fall of 1981. It is now producing by open-pit mining with gold recovery by heap leaching and cyanide extraction at a rated capacity of approximately 2722 t/d (3000 stpd) ore. Metal recovery has been projected (probably conservatively) at 5 10 kg/a (18,000 oz per year) gold and 1.6 Mg/a (59,000 oz per year) silver. MANY of the nickel-base superalloys developed recently for use in the as-cast condition exhibit a massive "white-etching" constituent1 in the inter-dendritic regions. Commercial alloys in this category are SM 200,* IN 100, INCO 713, and Nicrotung. The appearance of a similar microconstituent in nickel-rich Ni-A1-B alloys has been reported by Schijbel and Stadelmaier. Their investigation revealed that this constituent was the binary eutectic of the terminal nickel-base solid solution and the inter metallic based on Ni3A1. This binary eutectic is degenerate and NhA1 is the major phase. At lower temperatures the eutectic composition lies within the NkA1 phase field and under equilibrium conditions is single-phase NisAl. Taylor and F&apos;loyd3 have shown that in Ni-Al-Cr alloys containing at least 8 at. pct Cr, liquid compositions which solidify by the eutectic reaction in the nickel-rich portion, precipitate nickel-base solid solution and NiAl rather than nickel-base solid solution and NkA1 in the binary Ni-A1 system. Since the nickel-base alloys contain chromium in excess of 8 at. pct and are further alloyed with one or more of the elements titanium, cobalt, molybdenum, or tungsten, it is possible that the eutectic could contain NiAl rather than NisAl. In addition, Benson4 has reported that in low-nickel austenitic high-temperature alloys, which possess Ni/(Al + Ti) atomic-weight ratios <18.0, the Ni (Al, Ti) phase may precipitate from the melt during solidification. Since SM 200 and similar high-temperature materials were developed from alloys which were designed for solution treatment, the appearance of a eutectic would indicate that the limit of solid solubility has been exceeded. The purpose of this note is to confirm that the massive white constituent in the complex nickel-base alloys investigated is based on the binary eutectic Ni + NbAl and that the limit of solid solubility need not be exceeded to produce it, in common with other observations of cast alloys. Successive polishing of a sample of SM 200 showed that, in agreement with Schobel and Stadelmaier, particles of the constituent were spherulitic and in particular were a) situated between cored dendrite arms, Fig. 1, and b) nucleated at the surface of dendrites, Fig. 2. The Ni/(Al + Ti) atomic-weight ratios for the nickel-base alloys which were observed to contain the massive eutectic constituent in the interdendritic regions are 12.1 (Nicrotung), 9.2 (IN loo), 19.5 (INCO 713), and 14.5 (SM 200). However, the results of X-ray analysis of these alloys in the as-cast condition failed to reveal the presence of the Ni (Al, Ti) phase. An electron microanalyzer was therefore employed to analyze the composition of this constituent in SM 200. The results of analyses of representative particles are as follows5: 8.4 at. pct Ti, 8.8 at. pct Co, 5.5 at. pct Cr, 0.9 at. pct W, 12.8 at. pct Al, and 63.6 at. pct Ni. Assuming that

Apart from their scientific interest, these data are needed chiefly in order to treat data on carburization, on rate of formation of pearlite, and on rate of austenit-izing in a quantitative way.1&apos;2&apos;9&apos;10 In the present investigation rates of diffusion of nickel in ?-Fe over wide temperature and concentration ranges have been determined, and the effects of carbon, of im- purities, and of grain size on these rates have been studied. Claussen,3 using the data of Fry,4 has calculated the diffusion coefficient of nickel in y-Fe as 9.2 X 10-11 sq. cm. per sec. at 1200ºC., but had no data from which to calculate the variation of D with concentration, temperature, and percentage of carbon. The vapor phase deposition of molybdenum and tungsten from the hexacar-bonyls has been thoroughly investigated by Lander and Germerl, and shown to yield well-bonded coatings on a variety of hot metallic surfaces. They also demonstrated that chromium coatings2&apos;3 could be similarly deposited, but did not investigate this metal extensively. Recently, conditions have been described by which this compound can be prepared in quantities sufficient for laboratory scale plating experiments, and it is the purpose of the present communication to outline the results of preliminary experiments upon the plating of chromium from its carbonyl. Apparatus and Technique The apparatus used in these experiments is shown in Fig I. At one end, connected by a short length of rubber tubing, is a Cenco Hypervac 20 pumping continuously. At the opposite end is a needle valve which allows a small stream of purified hydrogen to flow through the apparatus. Connected in series are a trap T1, maintained at the temperature of dry ice and acetone, the plating chamber, and two traps T² and T3 containing crystals of the carbonyl. T² is kept in a constant temperature bath (not shown), while T³ is at room temperature. Stopcock S6 allows the hydrogen flow to by-pass the carbonyl traps. A McLeod gauge is connected so that it can measure the pressure at the pump through Se, or the pressure at the plating chamber through S9 and S6. The standard (12 liter) volume connected by Sb is used to determine the volume included by S4, S6, SB, Slot the needle valve and the McLeod gauge. Knowledge of this volume allows calibration of the flow of hydrogen. The apparatus* is built entirely of pyrex, except for the needle valve, the rubber connection to the Hypervac, and the cover of the plating chamber. The plating chamber is water-jacketed, with a large brass top allowing insertion of the specimen to be plated. Set into the brass top is a ground glass stopper through which thermocouple leads are sealed. The thermocouple wires (pure Pt, and 87 pct Pt-13 pct Rh) serve the double purpose of measuring the specimen temperature and suspending it in the chamber. Surrounding the chamber is the coil of an induction heater, H. The apparatus is designed to allow variation of the following conditions: (I) the specimen temperature, from room temperature to about 1000°C, (2) the carbonyl vapor pressure, from 40 to 220 microns, and (3) the hydrogen flow. W. H. Somerton is to be commended for his application of the methods of dimensional analysis in combination with the results of laboratory drilling tests to obtain a significant formula for the rate of penetration for the process of rotary drilling. This formula is shown to be a consequence of a more general formulation developed by the discussor as a result of his investigations of the basic action of most methods of rock drilling by mechanical means—the momentary loading of a chisel-shaped tool on the surface of the rock at the bottom of the hole. Some of the author&apos;s conclusions are re-examined in the light of this general formulation. DRILLING RATE FORMULA The author selects a minimum number of the most significant variables associated with the rotary drilling process to set up his two dimensionless parameters. Only one variable is associated with the geometry of the bit —the bit diameter, D; only one variable is associated with the properties of the rock pertinent to drilling— the drilling strength, S; and only two independent variables are associated with the conditions of operation the weight on the bit. F, and the rate of rotation, N. The dependent variahle of interest is, of course, the rate of penetration, R. The results of the author&apos;s drilling tests show that the variable R that appears in the dimensionless parameter, RIND is approximately proportioned to the square of the variable, F, that appears in the other dimension-less parameter, F/D2S. This establishes the functional relationship between these two simple parameters that leads to the formulation of a third dimensionless parameter, RD1T2/NF1. This last parameter is a significant one for the rotary drilling process, in general, although the author properly limits the validity of his equations to his present test conditions. The author realizes that the numerical value of this parameter, C, is not a constant but may be a function of one or more additional dimensionless groupings of the many other variables associated with the rotary drilling process, e.g. some dimensionless measure of bit wear. The author&apos;s parameter is shown to be a special case of a more general dimensionless parameter, developed by the discussor. that is applicable to practically all methods of rock drilling by mechanical means, namely. Isothermal sections of the Ti-0-H phase diagvam at 600°, 700°, and 800°C have been constructed from equilibrium hydrogen pressure measurements over a range of Ti-0-H alloys containing up to 34 at. pct 0. Oxygen reduces the hydrogen solubility at fixed hydrogen pressure but increases the terminal solubility in the a solid solutions at the a/(a + P) phase boundary. Metal-lographic studies of alloys annealed below the eutectoid temperature show that oxygen also increases the ter-ninal solubility of hydrogen in the a solid solution in equilibrium with the hydride phase. The effect of oxygen on hydrogen solubility is discussed in terms of the electronic and geometric structure of interstitial solid solutions. THE isothermal solubility of hydrogen in a Ti-0 alloys at 800°C has been measured by Hepworth and ~chuhmann&apos; who subsequently used ternary Gibbs-Duhem integrations to calculate oxygen activities in binary Ti-0 alloys. The present study aims to extend Hepworth and Schuhmann&apos;s measurements to alloys richer in oxygen and to a range of temperatures. This paper presents the results of hydrogen equilibrium pressure/concentration measurements in Ti-0 alloys as well as observations on the effect of oxygen on the terminal solubility of hydrogen in a titanium. The thermodynamic properties of binary Ti-0 alloys, derived from these measurements, will be published separately.&apos; EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Specimen Preparation. Ti-0 alloys were prepared from iodide-refined titanium and titanium dioxide obtained by hydrolysis of redistilled titanium tetrachlo- ride. Specimens containing up to 16 at. pct 0 were prepared by electromagnetic levitation3 whereas a conventional tungsten arc furnace with a water-cooled copper hearth was used to melt oxygen-rich alloys. The specimen homogeneity was indicated by the constancy of lattice parameters of samples from various parts of the ingot as well as by the sharpness of the reflections on X-ray powder patterns. Oxygen-rich specimens in the composition range (20 to 34 at. pct), where ordering has been ~bserved,~ were annealed for 300 hr at 600°C prior to use in hydrogen solubility measurements. Apparatus. The hydrogen pressure/concentration measurements were made with a modified Sieverts apparatus shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1. Specimens were placed in a clear silica tube and impurity pickup by direct reaction with silica was prevented by lining the heated end of the silica tube with thin molybdenum sheet. A double silica tube was required to eliminate loss of hydrogen by diffusion through silica at high temperatures and high hydrogen pressures, the space between the tubes being maintained at a hydrogen pressure equal to that above the specimen. MANY investigations have been made concerning the nature of plastic deformation and recrystallization of metals either in the form of polycrystalline materials or in the form of single crystals. However, similar work on strip materials composed of large grains as thick as the strip and having a high degree of preferred crystal orientation has not been carried out extensively. Such materials are ideal not only for studying changes in single crystals under conditions where neighboring grains exert their influences but also for obtaining the, complete change in orientation of a grain or group of grains during the course of plastic deformation and subsequent recrystallization. It is well known that first-order twins in the form of Neumann bands may be produced during the plastic deformation of ferrite crystals, particularly silicon ferrite crystals.1-3 Furthermore, it is believe that high-stress regions exist in the vicinity of these bands4a and it has been said that these banded regions would be active in recrystallization processes.5 Evidence to that effect in silicon ferrite had already been presented with photomicrographs showing recrystallization among Neumann bands during the early stages of recrystallization.5,6 Similar evidence has been published for nonferrous metals.5 Merging of fine parallel deformation bands during annealing to form twin bands of ordinary appearance in alpha brass has been offered not only as evidence of an active role being played by mechanical twins but also as evidence that such twins existed prior to recrystallization.5 Proof that such new structures are actually first-order twins, or even twins at all, must be considered inadequate except for those cases where X-ray or optical data have been obtained to confirm the necessary orientation relationship.7,8 A. B. Greninger has obtained excellent iliustrations of annealing twins in alpha irons Since his material was previously deformed by sharp hammering, a process that generally induces Neumann bands, the existence of twins following annealing might suggest that they grew from mechanical twins. In connection with transformation twins in alpha iron, Greninger reported that grains containing. three twin orientations occurred rarely and none occurred with three sets of well-developed bands.9 The work at the Pittsfield Works Laboratory on silicon ferrite in the form of large-grained strip steel deformed a small amount and annealed to partially recrystallize the grains indicates that the deformation and recrystallization processes that lead to annealing twins involve more complex processes than the formation of Neumann bands and the growth of such bands. Some groups of annealing twins are obtained which contain not only three well-developed twin structures, but also contain more than one order of twins. It is also shown, in one case, that an interrelated group of twins did not arise within one single parent grain and, furthermore, orientations of grains in the group

WE have already devoted two previous memoirs to this question. In the first we collated and discussed the existing literature on the subject; in the second, we described the crystalline forms obtained by the reduction, at different temperatures, of ferrous chloride by hydrogen or by zinc-vapor. The conclusion from these researches was that the three allotropic states of iron-a, stable below A2; 19, stable between A2 and A3; and 7, stable above A3-all crystallize in the cubic system. The differences observed were such as are customarily encountered in the crystallographic records of many minerals of which allotropic varieties or isomerides are not known, but did not conform to the ordinary definition of polymorphism. It is, however, improbable that allotropic transformations, which are placed beyond doubt by a series of positive facts, do not involve some changes in the intimate structure. As a matter of fact, the crystals we did obtain were too small to allow of a precise examination, and this might introduce an element of uncertainty in the firm establishment of our conclusions. Professor H. Le Chatelier was even led to think from some of our results that iron could very well be a rhombohedron simulating a cube, and not a true cube, and it will be remembered that the crystalline form of bismuth was for a long time incorrectly regarded as cubic. THE removal of sulfur from steel has been studied by many investigators, but the quantitative relationships between the factors involved have not been determined. This is undoubtedly due to the number of variables encountered in practice, an attempt to study any one reaction or relation being affected by other reactions the relative importance of which cannot be estimated. The factors that affect the extent of removal of sulfur in the basic open-hearth process are generally considered to be: 1. Basicity of the slag: (a) Iron oxides in the slag; (b) carbon in the metal, or carbide in the slag; (c) temperature. These factors affect the reactions: FeS + CaO = CaS + FeO FeS + CaO + C = CaS + CO + Fe. 2. Amount of sulfur in the gas. 3. Amount of manganese in the metal. The factors which affect the rate of removal of sulfur include, in addition to these 4. Fluidity of the slag: (a) Normal changes in fluidity with temperature; (b) changes in fluidity because of the addition of special reagents such as fluorspar. 5. Agitation of the bath.

Hydrogen diffusion in hcp and bcc titanium in the temperature range 610° to 900°C was measured by reacting cylindrical specimens of high-purity titanium at constant temperature with small constant pressures of hydrogen of the order of a few Torr. In the range 0 to 6.7 at. pct H in hcp titanium, the diffusion coefficient D in sq cm per sec is given by: where T is in °K and R in cal per g-atom OK. Only three measurements of diffusivity in bcc titanium were made: at 900&apos; : the diffusivity in ß titanium was found to be 1.8 x 10-4 sq crn per sec. McQUILLAN1 has studied the constitution of the Ti-H system and reported the concentration of hydrogen as a function of pressure of hydrogen and temperature. He found hydrogen absorption was reversible and rapid at temperatures above 500°C in both crystallographic modifications, the a (hcp) phase and the ß (bcc) phase, with the latter phase stabilized by hydrogen additions. Wasilewski and Kehl 2 measured the diffusivity of hydrogen in hcp and bcc Ti-H alloys. For bcc alloys, they reacted cylindrical specimens of titanium with hydrogen gas at 1 atm pressure. They measured the rate of absorption of hydrogen isothermally on specimens ranging from zero hydrogen content when above the transformation temperature to hydrogen contents sufficient to stabilize the bcc phase when below the transformation temperature. By integrating Fick&apos;s second law for a cylindrical geometry, assuming a diffusion coefficient independent of composition, they calculated diffusivities as a function of temperature. In the range 650" to 1000°C their results in bcc titanium yielded the expression: where D is in sq cm per sec, T in OK, and R the gas constant in cal per g-atom-OK. Their studies on the hcp a phase were conducted by exposing long cylindrical titanium specimens to hydrogen at a sufficiently high pressure to establish a surface layer of fl phase 80 to 120 u thick for the duration of an isothermal experiment. Concentration profiles were then determined by hydrogen analysis from chips obtained upon machining quenched specimens. The diffusivity of hydrogen was then calculated yielding the expression: The present investigation was undertaken principally to redetermine the diffusivity data on a titanium by a direct absorption from the gas phase at sufficiently low hydrogen pressures to avoid the presence of a surface bcc phase and also to check the diffusivity data at low hydrogen concentrations in the bcc stmcture. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE High-purity electrolytic sponge titanium (99.9 pct) of BHN 91 was arc-melted, forged, rolled, and machined into cylinders of final hardness, upon annealing, of BHN 92. Cylindrical specimens of two sets of dimensions were used: 1.524 by 2.931 cm and 1.905 by 3.663 cm diam and length, respectively. The experimental apparatus used for annealing specimens and for admitting known amounts of hydrogen at constant pressure is shown in Fig. 1. In a typical experiment, a specimen was lightly abraded with fine-grain silicon carbide, washed with water and detergent, and then thoroughly degreased with reagent-grade tri-chlorethylene and acetone. The specimen was suspended by a Chrome1 wire in the center of a quartz furnace tube, without contact with the tube, and heated to 925°C (as measured by a thermocouple adjacent to the specimen, outside the tube) for a period of at least 4 hr under a vacuum of from 10-6 to -7 Torr as measured by an ionization gage. The furnace temperature was then adjusted to the temperature chosen for the particular diffusion study and the specimen allowed to equilibrate thermally. Hydrogen was then ad-

The scanning electron microscope (SEM), became commercially available in 1966. Embodying some unique features not provided by conventional electron microscopes, this new electron-optical instrument offers the scientific community a new way of observing the surfaces of materials. In rock mechanics research, the SEM should prove a useful basic tool in characterizing rock fracture on a very small scale and thus contribute to a better understanding of rock behavior at larger scales. This article presents one example of how the SEM is being applied to such research at the Twin Cities Mining Research Center operated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in Minneapolis. This research center conducts theoretical and experimental studies on a broad range of mechanisms that induce disintegration by the application of energy to rock.1 Some of these studies are concerned with the relation of microstructure to rock behavior and are carried out mainly with the petrographic microscope. At the same time, however, the center recognizes that this relation must be studied through several orders of magnitude, from lattice-size units of rock-forming minerals to field-size rock units. The SEM fits this scheme by extending the capability of the petrographic microscope into smaller orders of magnitude. However, because its resolution is limited to about 200 A at 10,000x, the SEM is not capable of resolving lattice-size units, and hence a conventional electron microscope with a much greater resolution capability is necessary at this order of magnitude.

SOME of the broader relations between structure and ore deposition along the London fault, deduced from a thorough study of the geology of the eastern part of the Mosquito Range, should be of general interest to economic geologists. The first part of this paper is a generalized state-ment of the geology of the region in which the London fault is located; it may be supplemented by reference to several earlier publications by the writers and to the U. S. Geological Survey&apos;s Professional Paper 148, on the Leadville district. The second part deals with the structure of both the fault and the disturbed zone adjoining the fault. The third part dis-cusses the salient features of the ore deposits, particularly emphasizing structural control. The two generalized maps are complementary to one another but contain too many data to show on a single small map. The London fault is between Leadville and Alma, and the ore deposits along it are said to lie in the Alma district. Field work in this district, during six summers since 1927, has been a part of the cooperative work of the U. S. Geological Survey, the State of Colorado, and the Colorado Metal Mining Board. The writers have made use of work by R. D. Butler, J. W. Vanderwilt and R. E. Landon. G. F. Loughlin and C. H. Behre, Jr., who have worked on the west side of the range, have con-tributed valuable suggestions. Mining men of the district have aided in many ways.
