The "Hormite Group" was proposed for palygorskite (attapulgite) and sepiolite for their complex magnesium silicate composition and elongate crystals (Martin-Vivaldi and Robertson, 1971). These minerals occur in close association with each other and more complex structural variations may exist (Bailey, 1972). In 1862 Savchenkov used the name palygorskite to describe a mineral from the Palygorsk locality (Hay, 1975), near the Ural Mountains. Ovecharenko and Kukovsky (1984) mention that when mountain leather deposits were prospected in the Palygorsk Division mine it was assumed this unusual mineral was a variety of asbestos. Early mineralogists used the terms "mountain cork" or "mountain leather" when referring to palygorskite. Robertson (1986) mentions that it appears palygorskite was known since Theophrastus&apos; time, ca. 314 BC. J. de Lapparent used "attapulgite" for clays from Attapulgus, GA, and Mormoiron, France, because he thought them different from palygorskite, but the two types were proved to be the same (Bailey et al., 1971). The name attapulgite is still used for the Florida and Georgia deposits when the crystal length to diameter ratio does not exceed 10:1(Merkl, 1989). Georgia palygorskite clays are of much shorter length compared to classic palygorskite. In 1847 Glocker first used the name sepiolite which was called "Meerschaum" by Werner (1788) and Hauy (1801) namedit "Ecume de Mer." Brochant (1802) described low density and white magnesium silicates adding the name Talcum Plasticum and Ecume de Mer. In the Meigs-Attapulgus-Quincy district palygorskite (attapulgite) commonly occurs in two distinct forms referred to as short length palygorskite (Meigs Member) and long length palygorskite (Dogtown Member) (Merkl, 1989). Long length palygorskite crystals (> 10 pm) are rarely observed in the Meigs and Dogtown Members, but when present are in association with dolomite crystals. The short length form is usually less than 2 pm in length and has a low magnesium content whereas the long length form has a high magnesium content and a length greater than 2 pm. The distinctions in morphology are not only important because of the relationship to the origin of the deposits, but also in relation to activity in causing membranolytic activity related to data on palygorskite samples from 9 locations ranging from relatively inert to active in work reported by Nolan et al. (1989). The > 10 pm lengths amounted to only 51 of 17,401 fibers sized. The shortest lengths (< 0.5 pm) were relatively inert. This study pointed out that surface activity, morphology, and chemical differences may be distinctly different within the definition of palygorskite, or for that matter for any individual mineral so that health and other properties must be measured because the name alone does not necessarily indicate uniformity. Palygorskite (attapulgite) fuller&apos;s earth was first sold for drilling mud in 1941. The market for this use expanded slowly and has maintained a level of 7 to 10% of the total US production during the last few years. Most of the fuller&apos;s earth sold for drilling mud comes from the southern part of the Meigs-Attapulgus-Quincy district of Georgia and Florida. Palygorskite clays produced in this area are superior to most other fuller&apos;s earth for mud used in drilling salt formations, but because of high water loss, they are inferior to bentonite where the rocks drilled contain no saltwater. According to Oulton (1965), more than 90 different grades of fuller&apos;s earth are produced. Some of these grades are used for pharmaceuticals designed to absorb toxins, bacteria, and alkaloids; for treatment of dysentery; for purifying water and dry cleaning fluids, dry cleaning powders and granules; for the manufacture of NCR (no carbon required) multiple copy paper; for the manufacture of wallpaper; and as extenders or fillers for plastic, paint, and putty. Fuller&apos;s earth mined near Ellenton, FL, was used for making lightweight aggregates for the construction of concrete barges during World War I1 (Calver, 1957). Still other uses of fuller&apos;s earth and its suitability for uses in new products are outlined by Haden, Jr., and Schwint (1967), Haden, Jr., (1972), and Haas (1970). One special use of fuller&apos;s earth is as a carrier of platinum catalysts that are made in the United Kingdom from sepiolite clays mined in Spain. Other uses of sepiolite fuller&apos;s earth (Chambers, 1959) are similar to those of the palygorskite (attapulgite) type mined in the United States.

INTRODUCTION The Chimney Creek Gold Mine (Gold Fields Operating Co. - Chimney Creek) is located 47 miles northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada, at the northern end of the Osgood Mountains. The operation is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gold Fields Mining Corporation, the North American branch of Consolidated Gold Fields PLC, London, England. The plant started up in November, 1987, less than three years after discovery of the orebody and three months ahead of schedule. Ore is mined in an open pit and is processed by combined dump leaching and milling techniques for gold and silver recovery. The mine is set to produce approximately 150.000 ounces of gold and 50,000 ounces of silver per year over a 12 year life at current reserve estimations. The mine was designed and constructed at a cost of $79.3 million with engineering and construction services provided by Davy McKee Corporation, San Ramon, California. Key Gold Fields operating staff were involved in the design of the facility from the start of the project: The Mine Manager, Plant Superintendent, Plant General Foreman, Maintenance General Foreman and Chief Metallurgist were all involved full time on the project within 5 months of the first ore discovery. Emphasis was directed at optimizing operating efficiency and in particular minimizing labor costs in the plant. It was recognized that a high level of instrumentation and control would be required to achieve this. The risk associated with the instrumentation and control systems implemented was to be minimized by using equipment and systems that had been proven in industry while utilizing the most cost effective, state-of-the-art technology available. The reliability of the overall control system was considered to be critical in view of the cost of downtime associated with the gold extraction plant. BRIEF PROCESS DESCRIPTION The dump leaching process treats approximately 1.2 million tons per year of low grade ore at an average grade of 0.035 oz/ton. Run of mine material is dumped on a lined leach pad and weak cyanide solution is applied by drip irrigation. Pregnant solution run off is pumped to carbon columns in the milling plant for gold recovery and the barren solution returned to the dump leach circuit. Average gold recovery is 60%. This process has little instrumentation and control associated with it. The milling operation treats 700,000 tons annually of higher grade ore (0.200 oz/ton initially, dropping to an average of 0.135 oz/ton after first two years). Recovery is directly related to head grade (fixed tail assay effect) and currently averages 96%. A single pass through a jaw crusher reduces run of mine ore to minus 12 inches. The ore is stockpiled and reclaimed by loader for grinding in a two-stage milling circuit consisting of a SAG mill and ball mill, the latter in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. Cyanide and lime are added into the SAG mill to start dissolution of gold as early as possible in the circuit. The ground product leaves the milling circuit at approximately 78% minus 200 mesh and is fed to an unique "double thickener" leaching-recovery circuit. This circuit has been discussed in detail in a paper by J. G. Mansanti et a1 (1). Two thickeners are arranged in counter- current configuration with three leach tanks. Overflow solution from the first thickener is treated by carbon-in-columns (CIC) for gold recovery with 85% of the soluble gold recovered onto this carbon. Underflow slurry from this thickener is pumped to the leach tanks, with a total retention time of 12 hours, and then gravitates to the No. 2 thickener. Overflow solution from the second thickener is used as a wash in the first thickener. Underflow slurry from the second thickener is treated in a carbon-in- pulp (CIP) scavenging circuit to recover the remaining 15% dissolved gold. Gold-loaded carbon from both the dump leach and milling circuits is stripped in batches using the Zadra hot caustic- cyanide elution process. Gold (and silver) is recovered from the hot strip solution by precipitation with zinc dust and the product recovered on Funda pressure filters. The precipitate is retorted to remove any mercury and then smelted into buttons. The buttons (approximately 80% gold, 15% silver) are shipped to an independent refiner in Salt Lake City, Utah, for further treatment.

INTRODUCTION Probably the most important family of chemicals used in mineral processing today is a category of basic commodity chemicals loosely denoted as pH regulators. Typical chemicals which are referred to as pH regulators include lime, magnesium hydroxide, soda ash, caustic soda, ammonia, sulfuric acid, and hydrochloric acid. These chemicals are often used in very significant amounts in almost all of the major mineral processing operations such as flotation, hydrometallurgy, etc. (in dosages up to ten pounds per ton of feed ore treated). While cheaper in cost per unit weight of chemical than more specific chemicals such as collectors, frothers, extractents, etc., the overall cost to the mill operator is generally higher with pH regulators per ton of ore processed than with any other given processing chemical. For example, a rough rule of thumb in sulfide mineral flotation is that the cost of lime is double that of the collector(s) used. The symbol pH is used to designate hydrogen ion concentration. When acids, salts, and bases are dissolved in water, individual molecules are dissociated into their constituent radicals or ions. The strength of an acid or a base increases with the extent of such dissociation or ionization. An alkaline solution is one in which the number of Qydroxyl ions (OH ) exceeds the hydrogen ions (H ). In an acid solution, the hydrogen ions predominate. In either case, both ions are always present as water itself ionizes to a limited extent, that is: [ ] The pH scale is logarithmic and the pH value is the negative of the logarithm (base 10) of the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter of solution. For example, a pH of 5 means that the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter is 0.00001 (1 x 10-5). Likewise, a pH of 9 means that the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter is 1 x 10-9. Normally, the relationship between hydrogen ion and hydroxyl ion concentration is based on the relationship: Concentration of H ion x concentration of OH- ion = constant. Eq. (1) In dilute and/or moderately concentrated solutions that are normally used in mineral procygsing processes, the constant at 25°C is 10-14. On the pH scale, the value of pH equal to 7 represents the hydrogen ion concentration of a neutral solution. pH values lower than pH 7 indicate increasing acidity and higher values than 7 indicate alkalinity. Table 1 shows the nature of the pH scale at 25°C. Temperature affects the extent of ionization of dissolved acids, salts, bases, and water so that the hydrogen ion concentration (hence pH) of a solution is also affected by temperature. As a means of demonstrating this dependency, Table 2 shows the change of the exponent of the constant (base 10) in Eq. 1 and the pH value corresponding to neutrality as a function of temperature. It is also important, for example, that alkalinity or acidity expressed by pH not be confused with total alkalinity or total acidity. For example, total alkalinity is commonly determined by titration with a standard acid solution (usually HC1). pH is a measure of the hydroxyl ion concentration of an alkaline solution, whereas titration is a measure of an alkaline solution&apos;s acid neutralizing capacity. Thus, if one takes a series of various alkaline solutions prepared using different chemicals but all of exactly the same pH (and temperature) and then subsequently carries out a titration on each solution with a standard acid, it would be observed that the various alkaline solutions would neutralize entirely different amounts of acid. As an example, 0.08 grams of caustic (NaOH) , 6.32 grams of soda ash (Na2CO3), and 8.17 grams of ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) all have a pH of 11.3 at 25°C. One liter of each of the above solutions neutralizes 0.073, 4.348 and 8.496 grams of HC1, respectively. Therefore, depending on the specific use of any given pH regulator, special tests need to be run by the mill operator to determine factors such as: the specific technical goals to be accomplished by

Introduction The geological processes that form coal can also concentrate trace elements in the coal. For example, the average concentration of arsenic in bituminous coal (20 ppm) is ten times the average concentration found in all the other rocks that make up the earth&apos;s crust (2 ppm). Similarly, other elements, such as antimony, cadmium, mercury and selenium, are more concentrated in coal than in the earth&apos;s crust. When coal is burned, trace elements can be further concentrated. Although no new constraints on trace clement emissions were placed on the power generation industry under the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, the act does mandate a three-year study of air toxics. Any new regulations aimed at electric utilities as a result of this Federally-mandated study will almost assuredly be very costly-an estimated $1 billion per year. Many trace elements in coal are associated with mineral matter. For example, arsenic is commonly associated with pyrite, cadmium with sphalerite, chromium with clay minerals, mercury with pyrite and cinnabar, nickel with millerite, pyrite and other sulfides, and selenium with lead selenide, pyrite and other sulfides (Finkelman, 1980). There are also cases in which some of these elements are organically bound. Just as both organic and pyritic sulfur can be found in the same coal, the same trace element may be both organically bound and present as part of a mineral in the sane coal. Physical coal cleaning techniques are effective in removing mineral matter from coal and can potentially remove at least some of the trace elements associated with specific minerals, thereby reducing the release of these elements into the atmosphere. Conventional coal cleaning to remove trace elements As part of a project funded by the Electric Power Research Institute, CQ Inc., a wholly-owned EPRI subsidiary located in western Pennsylvania, has demonstrated that large reductions in the concentration of many trace elements are possible if conventional coal cleaning techniques are properly applied. Four examples are given in Tables 1 to 4. In each example, the results shown were generated by cleaning the coal at CQ Inc.&apos;s commercial-scale cleaning test facility. Cleaning results for Upper Freeport Seam coal from Northern Appalachia are provided in Table 1. Data are presented in the table in two ways: as a weight-based concentration (parts per million) and as a concentration per heat unit (grams per billion Btu). Grams per billion Btu is analogous to pounds per million Btu, but avoids the use of numbers with many decimal places. The heat-based concentration provides a better measure of boiler impacts, because the increased heating value obtained through coal cleaning reduces the number of tons that must be burned to produce a given thermal output. Reducing the quantity of coal burned reduces the quantity of trace elements entering the boiler. This raw coal is relatively high in several trace elements of environmental concern, including arsenic, cadmium and chromium. Cleaning provided large reductions in the quantity of arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, fluorine, lead, mercury, nickel, silver and zinc. The results for tests with a Powder River Basin coal, Rosebud/McKay, are presented in Table 2. Large reductions in arsenic, barium, cadmium, fluorine, mercury, nickel, selenium and zinc were observed with cleaning. The concentration of chromium increased with cleaning, while lead concentration increased in one test and decreased in another. Table 3 presents test results for Croweburg Seam coal from Oklahoma. Large reductions in arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium and zinc were obtained with cleaning. Smaller reductions were obtained with lead and nickel, while chromium, fluorine and mercury increased in at least one of the tests. Table 4 presents cleaning test data for Kentucky No.11 Seam coal. In this case, large reductions were obtained with all elements measured. In general, these data indicate that physical coal cleaning is effective in reducing the concentration of many trace elements, especially if they are present in the coal at relatively high concentrations. The degree of reduction achieved is coal-specific, relating in part to the degree of mineral association of the specific trace element and the degree of liberation of the trace element-bearing mineral. INTRODUCTION Until recently, gamma doses had been largely ignored in Ontario uranium mines. This has been due to the assumption that these doses are small and have been more or less unchanged with time and hence their effects have been included automatically in the epidemiological studies that led to the establishment of radon daughter exposure limits. This assumption had to be challenged for two basic reasons. The first was that radon daughter exposures to miners have been progressively reduced over the years due to improved ventilation and ever more stringent regulations, while gamma exposures have presumably remained relatively unchanged. Therefore it must be assumed that the ratio of gamma to radon daughter exposure has gone up. The second reason is more philosophical. It is clearly inappropriate to make judgements on the significance of a potential industrial hazard when the magnitude of that hazard has not been fully assessed. Having decided that some sort of assessment of gamma exposures to uranium miners must be made, it was than necessary to determine how this should be done. Several options were available, for instance: (i) Wholesale personal gamma dosimetry for all mine and mill workers, (ii) Personal gamma dosimetry only for those workers suspected of receiving the higher doses, coupled with area monitoring to estimate the exposures of other workers, (iii) Area monitoring coupled with dose rate times time calculations for all. This would correspond to the generally prevalent method of assessing radon daughter exposures. It was argued that since radon daughter exposures are the major radiological hazard in uranium mines, to invest resources for assessing a lesser hazard to a greater degree of precision was not cost effective. (iv) Since gamma dose rate is related to ore grade, individual doses could be assigned from knowledge of work location and ore grade. Before deciding which of these options would be most appropriate, it was necessary to have some idea of the magnitude of the problem. Very few data were available in the literature and with the exception of a few spot dose rate measurements, and the results of a few gamma dosimeters issued to selected individuals by some of the mining companies, nothing was available. A rule of thumb of obscure origin is often quoted within the industry indicating that gamma dose rates underground will be about 0.25 mR/h per lb/ton or 5 mR/h per % U. This had been used by some to justify neglecting gamma radiation at least for ore grades of the order of 0.1% or 2 lb/ton, on the grounds that gamma dose rates would be of the order of 0.5 mR/h and therefore give rise to annual doses of only about 10 mSv (lrem). That is, it was assumed that gamma radiation was of limited concern compared to the hazard associated with the inhalation of radon daughters. We were thus faced with the situation of just assuming that no regulatory limits were being breached. This situation could not be allowed to continue. A program was initiated to investigate the gamma doses absorbed by uranium miners in three mines in Ontario, and extensive gamma surveys were conducted in the Quirke 2 mine of Rio Algom Ltd, Elliot Lake; Denison Mine, Elliot Lake; and Agnew Lake Mine, Espanola. Negative reaction was received from several mine company officials to the possibility of all miners being required to wear personal gamma dosimeters due to the logistical difficulties involved, and therefore part of the project was aimed at determining if a reliable correlation between gamma dose rate and ore grade in the work location could be deduced, in order that dose rate times time calculations might be used for gamma dose assessments. The results of these programs provided evidence that the gamma dose for some employees in the three mines investigated may be a significant fraction of the current maximum permissible annual dose of 50mSv (5 rem). When combined with radon daughter exposures in the manner recommended by the ICRP at their 1980 Brighton meeting (ICRP 80) the results indicated that some individuals will come close to the resulting limit and may even exceed it. The Roybal Raise incorporates the simplicity and low cost of a short bald-headed raise while overcoming the usual impediments to driving a high baldheaded raise. The concept provides for speedy excavation and maximizing the use of the excavated opening, using the rock for structural support. The design is simple: two baldheaded raises are driven parallel to one another, interconnected by dogholes about 8 m (25 ft) apart. In this fashion, the raise can be driven safely and efficiently to 60 m (200 ft) or more. When the raise is complete, the excavation requires no timber for support or partitioning. Rather, the rock itself supports the construction. As a test, a two-compartment Roybal Raise was attempted at the Independence mine in the Willow Creek District of Alaska. One side was driven 2 x 2 m (6 x 6 ft), intended for a manway and equipment skip. The other was driven 1.5 x 1.5 m (5 x 5 ft) for a muck compartment. Both sides were driven at a 65° angle from horizontal and 1 x 1 m (4 x 4 ft) dogholes spanned the 4.6-m (15-ft) pillar between the two compartments. After topping out at 50 m (160 ft), the raise was found to meet all expectations of efficiency, low cost, and practical simplicity. Technique Preparing the Roybal Raise for driving involves no elaborate or costly site prep except assembling materials and providing for muck removal. Normally, the raise muck falls directly onto the sill or track and is picked up either by an overshot mucker or a front-end loader. Raise mining proceeds initially by taking up both compartments simultaneously to the first doghole. It progresses by alternating one side as a clear manway for access with the other side, the active side, as a muck compartment (Fig. 1A). This stage proceeds quickly for no mucking or staging is required to cycle the first three rounds. On the fifth round, in addition to the normal raise round, rib holes are winged out toward the adjacent raise, thus starting the dogholes. Finally, as the sixth raise rounds are drilled and shot, the first doghole is also completed from both sides. The second stage commences by establishing one side as a clear manway for access while the other side, used as a muck compartment, is prepared for active mining. Figure 1B illustrates this step in the succession of raising with the active side advancing to the second doghole level. During this stage, services are maintained through the manway side and equipment is stowed in the doghole during blasting. As the active side advances, muck may be allowed to fill the bottom portion of that side since it is unnecessary to clear it for access. The next stage of raising involves cleaning out the former muck compartment and preparing it for use as a manway. At the same time, the former manway is prepared for advance and use as a muck compartment (Fig. 1C). As in the previous step, the same doghole is used for access and equipment storage. The active side advances until the second doghole is completed, at which point equipment and access are moved to the new doghole. From there, the active side is driven past the second doghole 8 m (25 ft) more to the third doghole level. Again, half of the doghole and the next raise round are mined. The fourth stage involves switch ing back the manway side for the muck side (Fig. ID). The new muck side is driven to the third doghole where equipment storage and access are reestablished. From there, the active side is advanced to the fourth doghole. In the same fashion, the raise is advanced to the top, alternating the manway side with the active side, maintaining access through the inactive manway, and storing equipment in the uppermost doghole. The cycle time for driving each compartment, regardless of the raise height, is greatly improved over that for normal bald-headed raises of comparable height. By storing equipment in the upper-

Introduction 1300 BC, Egypt. Pharaoh, the god-king, owned all things. He was the only mine operator. As the provider of all things, Pharaoh had great expectations of his officials who gathered the wealth. Pharaoh&apos;s official, the mine foreman, was at a gold mine site to see that royal expectations were met. For the official, it could mean a promotion to the good life here and to the godly life hereafter. When he checked the haul for sufficient progress, a lot was at stake. The miner wore a loincloth, perhaps a headband and, if he was a prisoner, ankle manacles. Only an oil lamp helped illuminate the hot, dusty blackness. A fire at the base of the quartz ore face competed for scarce air. The ore so heated crumbled at the prompting of copper wedges. Confined to a crouch, the miner tossed chunks of ore onto a rope-mesh which, when loaded, was drawn up and lugged out. On the surface, the gold was ground to dust. Then it was transported by donkey caravan to the royal depot. There it was weighed, recorded, and distributed to workshops. Many minerals mined Egypt had gold mines to the south in Nubia and to the east in the desert and Sinai. Indeed, gold underwrote Egypt&apos;s prosperity. With a constant gold supply, fewer hungry hands robbed burial crypts and tombs. Gold was sacred, "the flesh of the gods." The shiny metal financed the army that policed the desert mining routes and guarded the gold caravans from Bedouin marauders. Gold theft was an offense to the gods. Anyone caught with gold `in his lunchpail,&apos; so to speak, could say goodbye to life, both in this world and the next. In addition to gold, Egypt possessed other mined riches that allowed the Egyptian civilization to flourish. From Sinai and Nubia came copper. So abundant was the red metal that it enabled Egypt to become the supreme power, before the advent of iron. Also mined were amethyst, turquoise, feldspar, jasper, carnelian, and garnet. These were used for the rich inlay work that distinguished Egyptian jewelry and cloisonne. But Egypt&apos;s most endurable and awesome material was its stonework - for statues and obelisks and in temples, tombs, and pyramids. Stone quarrying was a vast enterprise. One expedition boasted nearly 10,000 men. These included 5000 laborer soldiers, 130 skilled quarrymen and stonecutters, and - egads! - even 20 scribes. In addition, there were thousands of officials, priests, and officers grooms. There were even fishermen, to provide the multitudes with the catch of the day. Mining methods detailed In 1300 BC, quarrying techniques had changed little since the age of the pyramids some 1300 years before. At that time, in 2600 BC, limestone was locally quarried and fashioned into the blocks of the pyramids. A basic limestone mining method was tunnel quarrying. A ramp was built up to the face of a cliff. A monkey stage was then erected on a ramp. While standing on the stage, quarrymen carved out a rectangular niche in the cliff. The niche was large enough for a quarryman to crawl into. With a wooden mallet, he hammered long copper chisels along the edges of the niche floor to free up the back and sides of the block. The quarryman climbed out of the niche and removed the stage. He then carved out a series of holes in the cliff face for what would be the bottom of the block. The quarryman pounded wooden wedges into the holes. He watered the wedges until they were soaked. The water-logged wedges expanded, splitting the stone along the line of holes. The freed-up block was then levered down from the cliff. On the ground, the blocks were placed on sledges. Men pulled these to nearby water transport. Without block and tackle pulleys, paved roads, and wheels, this was no mean feat. Each block weighed an average of 2.3 t (2.5 st). Whenever possible, the quarrying was done directly from the surface. Introduction The disposal of spent ore from cyanide heap-leach processing facilities is of concern to the mining industry, the regulatory agencies and the general public. The disposal of an additional several hundred million tons of spent ore from heap-leaching operations is planned in the western United States during the next decade, and this amount could increase if gold prices rise. In the past decade, more than fifteen million tons of spent ore have been disposed of in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The criterion for offloading spent ore was set by the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources at 0.5 ppm weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide. South Dakota&apos;s nitrate offloading limits vary for each mine, depending on ore type and other factors. Concentrations of nitrate in the leachate from spent ore depositories could be the result of conversion from other nitrogen-containing species. One likely source of nitrate is residual explosives from the blasting of ore. Previous work on the combustion products of nitrogen explosives has shown incomplete oxidation (Johansson and Persson, 1970). Another likely nitrate source is the degradation of cyanide to ammonia, followed by oxidation to nitrite and nitrate. A third possibility may be leaching of background nitrate from soil or rock. Objective The primary objective of this research was to investigate laboratory procedures for predicting nitrate concentrations in effluent after the disposal of spent ore at heap-leach gold processing operations. Laboratory tests were performed to define the concentrations of nitrate and nitrite in leachate as a function of time. Sources and species conversions were examined by investigating the nitrogen contributions from cyanide neutralization and from blasting with ammonium nitrate/fuel-oil (ANFO) explosives. Ore processing at cyanide heap-leach facilities Gold mines in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota normally use the following steps in their heap-leach cyanidation processing: Blasting. Surface gold mines in the Black Hills use ANFO explosives (approximately 95% ammonium nitrate and 5% fuel oil). Field evidence and studies show that explosives often fail to ignite or burn completely in shot holes. One reason is that ammonium nitrate absorbs moisture readily, which reduces blast efficiency. Ferguson and Leask (1988) cited a study conducted at the Fording coal mine in southeastern British Columbia. In that study, the total nitrogen released to surface and ground water was estimated to be about 6% of the slurry explosives. However, Ferguson and Leask (1988), in a later analysis of water quality near coal mines in the Kootenay coal fields, indicated that this is likely an overestimate of the nitrogen release. Mines that used ANFO explosives in dry conditions released 0.2% of the nitrogen from blasting. Cyanidation. At surface gold mines in the northern Black Hills, cyanide species from heap leaching can be classified into free cyanides and simple ions, weak complexes, moderately strong complexes and strong complexes (Scott and Ingles, 1981). Degradation of cyanide and disposal of spent ore. Methods of destroying cyanides include hydrogen peroxide oxidation, natural degradation and evaporation, water leaching and alkaline chlorination. Hydrogen peroxide is used to oxidize cyanides in the northern Black Hills mining area. The hydrogen peroxide oxidation reaction forms cyanate, which can hydrolyze to form ammonium and carbonate ions. After formation of ammonia or ammonium ion, further oxidation to nitrite (NO2-) and nitrate (NO3-) can occur. Spent tailings from gold processing in the Black Hills normally are disposed of in tailings facilities constructed in nearby drainages. Infiltrating rainwater with a typical pH of about 5.6 is an additional component introduced into the spent ore after disposal. Methods Field sample collection. Spent ore samples were collected from conveyor belts (or other convenient points) at heap-leach mines by personnel from the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The samples were placed in black plastic bags that were contained within 5-gal buckets and sealed to prevent exposure to ultraviolet light. I feel very privileged to be added to the distinguished group that has received this award since the first recipient, Reno Sales, received it in 1954. If my research is correct, the last geologist to be honored was Bill Callahan in 1982. Perhaps the Awards Committee decided it was about time to select a geologist, and I became the beneficiary. Regarding the discovery of the Carlin ore body, it was the culmination of several studies - one going back as far as 1939 when a US Bureau of Mines engineer named W.O. Vanderberg recognized an unusual type of gold mineralization in sediments in northern Nevada. What was unusual was the fact that the gold was so fine that it would not concentrate in a pan. This, plus the study of the Roberts Mountain thrust by Ralph Roberts (1960) and conversations with Harry Bishop, manager of the Gold Acres Mine, pointed Alan Coope and me in the direction of the Lynn Window and, eventually, the Carlin discovery. There has been a great deal written about this discovery. I thought it would be interesting to discuss the evolution of Carlin gold exploration in Nevada since this time and to discuss the changes in perception of this unique type of mineralization. The method used by Coope and me in following up on Roberts&apos; work was to map geologically the Roberts Mountain thrust and conduct geochemical sampling of favorable outcrops and float. Coope was highly experienced in geochemical exploration, as he had graduated from the Royal School of Mines in London, studying under John S. Webb, one of the pioneers of geochemistry as applied to mineral exploration. We first considered using pathfinder elements, but finally concentrated on gold analyses alone, even though the sensitivity of fire assays used at that time was only about one-half part per million. According to the spatial relationship of the mineralization to the Roberts Mountain thrust, as pointed out by Roberts (1960), we were looking for mineralization within the thrust itself. Our models were the known Gold Acres and Getchell mines, which contained reserves on the order of 0.9 to 1.8 mt (1 to 2 million st). These were not of substantial size, but I had hoped we might find more than one of these tributary to a mill that would justify an operation for our employer, Newmont Mining Corp. What we ended up with was the type of deposit we were looking for - an open pit deposit of micron gold, which the old timers had missed because the gold was not capable of being panned. But never in our wildest dreams did we think there was a chance of finding a body containing 10 mt (11 million st) of ore at 0.30 oz/st (10.3 g/t).The deposit was not in the thrust proper but was found in a favorable horizon of Roberts Mountain siltstone that was below the thrust. This is the first example of how a model should not be followed blindly. Newmont was successful in keeping this discovery quiet for some time. After a considerable amount of drilling, a rumor circulated that they had discovered a large low-grade ore body of around 1.7 to 2.1 g/t (0.05 to 0.06 oz/st), which of course would not have been economic with gold at $1.13/g ($35/oz), which was the fixed price at that time. The company, for obvious reasons, did not discourage the rumor. When, however, the true results came out there was a lot of feverish activity. Because of this new type of so-called "invisible gold," which could have been missed by the old timers, the thought was that other deposits would be discovered very soon. The Carlin and other smaller deposits, including Bootstrap, Blue Star and Gold Quarry, were in windows where the lower plate of the Roberts Mountain formation (below the thrust) had been exposed by erosion. Introduction The Carlin Trend is North America&apos;s premier gold producing district. It is located in northeastern Nevada&apos;s Elko and Eureka Counties along a northwest trending belt about 65 km (40 miles) long and 8 km (5 miles) wide (Thorstad, 1989; Jones, 1989). This trend is the worldwide reference site for epithermal, sedimentary rock-hosted microscopic gold deposits. At least 19 deposits have been discovered to date, varying in size from 933 kg to 1.08 kt (30,000 to 35 million contained oz) of gold (Fig. 1). Newmont Gold Co. and its parent, Newmont Mining Corp., jointly constitute the largest mineral right holders in the district. They own or control more than 1000 km&apos; (386 sq miles) in and around the Carlin Trend and own all or part of I6out of the 19 mines and prospects identified to date. Since the initiation of Newmont&apos;s exploration activities in the Carlin Trend in 1961, 2.24 kt (72 million oz) of cumulative gold resources have been identified. Cumulative production from all mines since the start-up of Newmont&apos;s Carlin mine in 1965 to the end of 1989 was about 202 t (6.5 million oz) (Jones, 1989). The incentive of sustained high gold prices and innovation in processing technology resulted in a significant acceleration of gold output over the last few years. Newmont Gold alone produced more than 43.5 t (1.4 million oz) in 1989. That is equal to 22% of the cumulative 1965 to 1988 output, and an almost 200% increase over its 1986 output. The same incentives produced even more spectacular exploration results. In each of the last five years, net additions to reserves and resources outpaced current production by substantial margins. These facts demonstrate the spectacular past prospectiveness of the Carlin Trend and the success of focused, multi-disciplinary exploration methods that made it possible to more than offset the recent accelerated depletion of gold resources. However, is this situation sustainable? How long can the mining companies along the Carlin Trend keep on finding resources faster than they deplete them? These are some of the questions that motivated this study. The authors have not quantified the future potential for gold exploration in the Carlin Trend nor established a deposit discovery path. But strong indications were discovered that the [ ] Carlin Trend remains a relatively immature exploration district and that the potential for significant new discoveries is high. Methodology and data The approach chosen to address the above questions was simple. The authors compiled deposit size data, measured in contained ounces of gold resources, for all known deposits along the Carlin Trend (Table 1). The resource information was obtained by adding cumulative historical production (adjusted for mining losses and metallurgical recovery) to 1989 year-end published resource inventories. In a mature exploration area, where most deposits have been discovered, this distribution would be expected to approximate lognormality and would plot along a straight line on a lognormal probability scale. This result was found in previous work by Allais (1957) and recently confirmed by Cox and Singer (USGS, 1986) in regard to various types of mineral deposits in several regions of the world. It was also found to hold true for oil and gas pool size distributions (Arps and Roberts, 1958; Kaufman, 1962; McCrossan, 1969). [ ] The data used were compiled by Newmont Exploration geologists. The purpose of the study is to make inferences about the underlying geologic processes in the district and the maturity of the exploration effort. Therefore, deposits were not classified according to ownership but according to geologic occurrence as known from current information. Newmont&apos;s Post and Barrick&apos;s Goldstrike and Betze deposits, for example, are shown as a single occurrence to reflect the actual geologic setting. The cumulative frequency distribution of deposit sizes was plotted on lognormal probability paper (Fig. 2). The abscissa shows the cumulative fraction of deposits at or below a certain deposit size and the ordinate shows the deposit size in thousands of ounces of contained gold resources.

Introduction Soda ash is known chemically as sodium carbonate, an important inorganic chemical. It has been produced for several centuries by processing certain vegetation and minerals. The US soda ash industry has evolved from several small sodium carbonate mining operations in the West. Now, a nucleus of six companies produce about one-fourth of the world&apos;s annual soda ash output US producers currently dominate the world market. But certain international events are occurring that will reshape the domestic soda ash industry in the next decade. Historical perspective Soda ash is used mainly in the manufacture of glass, soap, dyes and pigments, textiles, and other chemical preparations. All of these are the first basic consumer products produced by developing societies. About 3500 BC, the Egyptians became the first society to use crude soda ash. The soda ash was used to make glass containers. It was most likely obtained from dried mineral incrustations around alkaline lakes. Soda deposits were virtually nonexistent in western Europe. So people resorted to burning seaweed to obtain the ashes. The ashes were then leached with hot water and the solute was recovered after evaporating the solution to dryness. The solute, a crude "soda ash" was impure. But, it could be used to make glass and soap. These two products and industries were important to the population and economic growth of the region. About 11.5 t (13 st) of seaweed ash was required to produce about 0.9 t (1 st) of soda ash. Along the coasts of England, France, and Spain, seaweeds with varying alkali contents became important items of commerce and sources of soda ash before the 18th century. The LeBlanc process used salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. It became the major method of production from about 1823 to 1885. In the early 1860s, Ernest and Alfred Solvay, two Belgian brothers, successfully commercialized an ammonia-soda process to synthesize soda ash. It used salt, coke, limestone, and ammonia. The Solvay process produced a better quality product than the LeBlanc method. In 1879, Oswald J. Heinrich presented to the Baltimore meeting of AIME, a paper entitled "The manufacture of soda by the ammonia process." The paper compared the two processes and foretold the demise of the LeBlanc technique. World production of soda ash in 1880 was 680 kt (750,000 st). Of that, 544 kt (600,000 st) was produced by the LeBlanc process. Of the 2.8 Mt (3.1 million st) of soda ash produced worldwide in 1913, only about 50 kt (55,000 st) was by the LeBlanc method. The LeBlanc process was never used successfully in the US, except for a brief period from July 1884 to January 1885 in Laramie, WY. Previously, soda ash had been produced by burning certain plants, as exemplified by the early Jamestown colonists, or by recovering small quantities of natural sodium carbonate found in alkaline lakes, such as those found near Fallon, NV, and Independence Rock, WY. Before the 1884 startup of the first synthetic soda ash plant in the US at Syracuse, NY, most of the domestic soda ash demand in the East was met by imports, primarily from England. Large-scale commercial production of natural soda ash began in California in 1887 from surface crystalline material at Owens Lake. Production from sodium carbonate-bearing brines at Searles Lake began in 1927 (Fig. 1). In 1938, during exploration for oil and gas in southwestern Wyoming, a massive buried trona deposit, presumably the world&apos;s largest, was accidentally discovered. Recent mineral resource evaluation by the US Geological Survey and the US Bureau of Mines indicates that the Wyoming trona deposit contains 86 Gt (93 billion st) of identified trona resource in beds 1.2 m (4 ft) thick or greater. Additionally, there is about 61 Gt (67 billion st) of reserve base trona. Of this 36 Gt (40 billion st) is in halite-free trona beds and 24 Gt (27 billion st) is in mixed trona and halite beds. In 1953, the Food Machinery and Chemical Corp. (later shortened to FMC Corp.) became the first company to mine trona in Wyoming. Soda ash demand increased.

INTRODUCTION In February 1981, the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety (CAIRS) initiated a routine Personal Alpha Dosimetry service for personnel of the Canadian uranium mining industry. This service is based on the use of the [Personal Alpha Dosimeter] developed by the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). The origins of personal alpha dosimetry and its rational are briefly described. Technical and organizational aspects of a routine personal alpha dosimetry service are outlined in this paper. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND International recommendations (1) and Canadian regulations have established Maximum Permissible Exposures (MPE) for each source of radiation exposure. Uranium workers in mines and mills are exposed to external radiation ( [y] rays) and to internal radiations ( [B] and [a] particles) which are delivered to the respiratory track by airborne alpha emitters (Rn and Th daughters and Long Lived Dust). To date, dosimetry for uranium workers has been performed by area monitoring/collective dosimetry. In North America the concentration of radon daughters is routinely measured by grab samples taken at the work place and by on-site gross alpha counting. The concentration of potential alpha energy is then calculated (usually by Kusnetz method) and expressed in Working Levels (WL). The time spent by each worker at a given work place is determined from his time sheets and used to calculate the individual monthly exposures to airborne alpha emitters, which is then expressed in Working Level Months (WLM). The uncertainties attached to such a procedure are obvious even in the case of frequent grab samplings and can be expected to lead to an underestimation of individual doses. Among fifteen possible sources identified in a mine situation, (2) four may stretch the standard deviation of the measurements&apos; distribution, nine may lead to an underestimation and two may lead to either an underestimation or to an overestimation. To improve this situation, in 1971 the Atomic Energy Commission began studying the use of personal alpha dosimeters to determine individual exposures from the airborne alpha emitters encountered in the uranium industry environments. Criteria for a Personal Alpha Dosimeter In order to minimize the difficulties encountered in determining exposures received by uranium workers, the CEA in co-operation with the Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada (AECB), has developed a set of criteria for personal alpha dosimeters. Exposures may be determined easily and accurately using this criteria. Autonomy The dosimeter must operate for at least 10 to 12 hours. Excess time spent in the mine or in the facility may possibly be related to an accidental situation causing unusual levels of radioactivity. Since the dosimeter may be needed in non-underground settings where a cap lamp is not used, full autonomy is desirable. Maintenance, Periodicity of Reading In order to complement other dosimetry systems, the personal alpha dosimeter should be read monthly when the filter should also be changed. Routine air flow checks can be made according to local conditions (e.g. diesel loading). Radioisotopes Identification Since the exposure unit (WLM) is based on the concentration of potential alpha energy in the air, the personal alpha dosimeter should be capable of identifying each short lived alpha emitter included in the calculation of the WI, and WLM. Permanent Exposure Record Three points may be considered here: 1. In many countries, lung cancer in uranium workers is a compensable occupational disease. In some instances, compensation is awarded when it can be proven that the worker has received an exposure above a certain limit. The present uncertainty of the individual exposure makes the compensation procedure difficult. 2. By design, a personal alpha dosimeter must representatively sample all airborne particles, ranging in size from the unattached fraction to the upper limit of respirable aerosols (0.001 to 5 µm). The dosimeter must offer minimal resistance to the penetration of these aerosols. While the mining/ milling environment presents harsh conditions which may accidentally contaminate the dosimeter, it is important to be able to distinguish these cases of contamination and still obtain accurate readings. 3. A dependable dose register is most valuable for further epidimiological studies. The dependability of such a data base increases with the possibility of a second assessment of the dosimeters&apos; reading (filter, film).

INTRODUCTION Large areas of the United States coal reserves have been undermined by room-and-pillar mining over the past century. These abandoned mines generally cause subsidence of the ground surface many decades after mining. Reports from England (1) where there is a longer history of room-and-pillar mining indicate that mines abandoned two centuries ago may still be causing subsidence, and causing surface destruction to urban areas or farm lands that have been developed in the interim. The devastation wrought by subsidence, both in terms of property loss and societal disruption is enormous. The authors discuss here the methods by which subsidence in abandoned mines may be controlled. Two distinctly different subsidence control technologies have been developed in the U.S. for abandoned coal mines. These are referred to as (1) Point Sup- port methods, and (2) Areal Backfilling. As the names imply, point support methods are used to protect individual structures, or even individual foundation elements of structures, whereas areas backfilling techniques may be applied to protect entire neighborhoods or urban districts hundreds of acres in extent. Both point support methods and areal backfilling have specific sub-categories of techniques that may be applied under different conditions as appropriate. POINT SUPPORT METHODS Point support methods are characteristically employed by civil engineers chartered with the design of a new structure or the protection of an existing structure. The subsidence control measures are only a part of a larger project, the safety of which must be assured to a degree of near certainty. The costs of point support methods involve a large number of bore-holes and the use of expensive materials in relatively small quantities. There exist several dozen point support methods, which operate either to support the underground cavities, controlling subsidence, or to isolate the structure from the effects of subsidence if it should occur. The latter methods usually involve deep foundations through the mine opening supporting the structure on the underlying strata. Our concern will be with the former method to support underground cavities to prevent subsidence. Gravel Columns and Associated Methods Gravel columns may be placed in the mine opening using the methods shown in [Figure 1]. Boreholes are drilled through the mine strata, and gravel poured down the borehole to form a pile on the mine floor. When the tip of the pile contacts the mine roof, it is rodded down to spread the pile, and permit additional gravel to be placed. The objective is to place as much gravel as possible in the mine opening, and to achieve firm contact with the mine roof. The gravel pile acts to reduce subsidence by three mechanisms. The filling of a significant fraction of the open mine volume reduces the amount of potential subsidence simply by killing open volume within the mine. In effect, the extraction ratio has been reduced by introducing the volume of gravel. The toe of the gravel pile abuts against nearby pillars, providing lateral support and protection against pillar deterioration. In effect, the height of the pillars has been slightly reduced by burying their lower portions. Finally, some direct support is provided to the roof strata, reducing the roof span and enhancing stability. The gravel column method may be used in a variety of applications, and with materials other than gravel. For example, gravel columns may be placed in a close line around the perimeter of the building to form a continuous gravel wall. The interior of the site may then be completely filled with sand, slurry or other material. Alternatively, a lean concrete may be used in place of gravel, so that the piles achieve significant structural capacity. The grout column, shown in [Figure 2], begins with the installation of a conventional gravel column which is placed around a grout pipe that extends through the borehole into the mine opening. When the gravel column is in place, portland cement grout is injected in stages. At each stage, sufficient grout is injected to fill the interstices in the gravel to build a column perhaps two meters in diameter and a meter tall. The group pipe is then raised one meter, and after the previously injected grout has set, the next stage of grout is injected. The process builds a column of grouted gravel to the

INTRODUCTION Anticipated increase of nuclear fuel production in the future coincides with growing concern about the occupational health risk of miners from inhaled radon decay products. As a consequence it has been suggested to even lower presently permitted exposure levels (NIOSH, 1980) and implement more stringent control on measurement programmes. Compliance with these regulations requires large investments in new or modified ventilation systems as well as in increased expenditure for staff and instrumentation for health physics operational monitoring. Since both costs are directly related to the overall ore production costs, this can have far reaching implications with regards to the economic feasibility of certain mining operations and consequently reduce estimates of low-cost minable ore reserves. In addition there is increasing evidence that the radon problem is not limited to the nuclear fuel cycle only, but can also represent a significant hazard to non-uranium miners. A key component in the cost-effective implementation of legislative control measures is the monitoring system employed. The choice of system is decisive for the total costs of installation and maintenance, manpower requirements and accuracy of nuclide determination. In the following operational specifications are defined for monitors in mining and milling environments. Different types of available instrumentation are discussed with regard to their suitability for practical radiation protection in underground mines, open cut mines and mills. ATMOSPHERIC CHARACTERISTICS Underground mines Radon in the air of underground mining operations is exhaled from surrounding rock surfaces, crushed material and, to a lesser extent, from water seepage. Whilst in uranium mines radon releasing ore bodies are generally localized in distinct areas, radon sources in non-uranium mines can be very dispersed throughout the system of mine tunnels. The ventilation scheme used influences the absolute atmospheric level of radon as well as the equilibrium conditions between radon and its decay products (factor F). In uranium mines mechanical forced-air ventilation is normally the only way to achieve and maintain legally required nuclide levels. This causes the F-factor to be rather low, e.g. in French CFA-mines F is of the order of 0.2 (Francois, Pradel, Zettwoog, 1975). At the same time the fraction of unattached radon decay products (fp) can increase due to the high air velocities employed. However, it is possible to find non-uranium mines with either natural draught ventilation only or assisted on demand by forced air ventilation during special operations or climatic conditions. Thereby the F-factor is more dependent on seasonal changes of temperature differences between outdoors and mine atmosphere and work routines. As a result F can cover a wide range from 0.02 to 0.95 (Steinhäusler, 1976). The use of filters or electro-precipitators in mine ventilation systems can modify the atmospheric characteristics twofold as it generally decreases the content of radon decay products, but at the same time increases the content of the unattached fraction fp . Average concentration levels of radon decay products are mostly lower in mechanically ventilated non-uranium mines than in equally ventilated uranium mines and are below 0.3 Working Level (UNSCEAR, 1977). However, some working places in non-uranium mines, specially with only natural draught ventilation can occassionally approach maximum permissible levels as defined for uranium mines (Strong, Laidlaw, O&apos;Riordan, 1975; Snihs, 1976; Sciocchetti, Scacco, Clemente, 1981). Open pit- and surface mines Radionuclide levels of radon decay products in the atmosphere of these mines are mostly too low to represent a significant inhalation hazard for miners, ranging typically from 0.03 to 0.1 Working Level (Steinhäusler, 1976). However, personnel using airpurifying respirators or working in cabins ventilated with filtered air can be exposed to a radon atmosphere with low value for the F-factor (F [<] 0.1) and high fp-value up to 80 % (Leach and Lokan, 1979). Mills Atmospheric radon concentration in crushing, grinding, drying and packing sections depends on the radium 226 content of the ore, ore storage methods and ventilation system employed. Providing adequate ventilation ([>] 2 air changes per hour) and control of dust production radon and its decay products represent only a minor problem (Saconney, 1979). MONITORING OF OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE Objectives Operational monitoring of the working places provides information on: - confirmation of appropriate control of the routine mining methods employed - indication of abnormal conditions. INTRODUCTION The United States Uranium Registry (USUR) tissue program was funded in 1978 by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) through its Human Health and Assessments Division, and registrant enrollment began in 1980. It is operated by Hanford Environmental Health Foundation (HERF), Richland, Washington, with support provided by Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL).** The USUR tissue program is the first systematic effort to contact and gain assistance of workers occupationally exposed to uranium and to seek and study uranium deposition in human tissue. This paper describes the program objectives, populations selected for study, procedures for enrolling workers in the program, types of tissue to be studied, and analytical procedures to be used. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES The objectives of the USUR tissue program are to: 1) Determine the distribution and concentration of uranium, if any, in the tissues of occupationally exposed workers. 2) Compare bioassay measurements of exposed individuals with the results of analyses of tissues obtained at autopsy. 3) Seek evidence of histopathologic changes related to any uranium deposition that may be present. 4) Conduct analyses of whole bodies, when available, to obtain more precise data on the uranium burdens, if any, in the body and organs, and especially the distribution in parts of the body, such as the skeleton, that are not usually accessible for sampling. 5) Develop data that will assist in evaluating a) the accuracy of current in-vivo measurement techniques, b) the propriety of existing regulations, and c) the adequacy of current protection programs. SELECTION OF POPULATIONS FOR STUDY Selection of the populations for the USUR tissue program was based on studies of the United States Uranium Registry described elsewhere (0c81). Potential populations for study were quite varied because of occupational exposure to different chemical forms of uranium, different levels and eras of exposure, varying ability to identify populations exposed in the past, and the general interest and cooperativeness of the populations. Nevertheless, certain identifiable populations emerged that were both willing to participate in the study and likely to provide useful information. Among the targeted populations are individuals who were exposed to uranium prior to the existence of modern exposure standards. These individuals are presently being enrolled by the USUR. The reliability of concentration and distribution data and the demonstration of effects are more likely in such individuals than in those who have received less exposure. However, the targeted groups also include individuals who Have been exposed to permissible levels of uranium, and reference employees in uranium plants who have not worked with uranium. The lesser exposures are of immediate interest because of the rarity of heavy exposures under current standards. The sampling of potentially exposed individuals with negative in-vivo measurement results may serve to check the adequacy of in-vivo measurements in the detection of deposition. [ENROLLMENT PROCEDURE] The enrollment of participants follows three patterns. 1) Presently employed workers are enrolled by the cooperative efforts of USUR staff with the medical, industrial relations, and/or health physics personnel of the uranium facility. Volunteers may be enrolled by medical personnel at the time of their physical examination or by health physics personnel at the time of a bioassay or lung counting procedure. Follow-up after initial contacts with currently employed uranium workers is carried out by on-site personnel, but subsequent follow-up is the responsibility of the Registry. 2) Retired workers are contacted by mail, with a covering letter from their former employer supporting the principles of the study but leaving participation in the program on an entirely voluntary basis. 3) An alternate method of enrollment is to obtain a USUR autopsy consent after death from the next of kin. As part of enrollment in the program, permission is requested for access to the individual&apos;s medical and exposure data, and a short occupational history is filled out. The autopsy permission agreement signed by the individual is for an initial period of 5 years; the USUR ordinarily seeks renewal of the agreement upon its expiration. While this agreement provides

To put coal in its proper perspective as a source of energy for electric power production, we must first compare it to other energy sources. A report of the Atomic Industrial Forum dated February 1958 records a number of authoritative though widely varying predictions. The most optimistic of these states that by 1968 there will be a total U.S. capacity of about 6000 megawatts of nuclear power, if growth continues at the present rate. Other sources indicate over 200,000 megawatts of total electrical capacity in utility plants by 1968. This is only 3% nuclear. Therefore, 97% of our total power production will be from non-nuclear energy. Fig. 1 shows the distribution of energy sources of electric utility product- ion in the U.S. as reported by the Federal Power Commission in 1954. Note that less than one quarter of the total is hydro and about one half of the total is coal. For 1957, the Edison Electric Institute reports that of the total steam- electric generation in the U. S., 68.6% was by coal, 7.9% was by oil and 23.5% was by gas. This is an increase for coal and a decrease for oil and gas in those three years. Thus we can conclude that two-thirds of the steam-electric power in the U. S. is now generated by coal. Fig. 2 shows the major markets for coal for 1947 vs 1957. The greatest in- crease has been in the electric utility market, where it has more than doubled in the ten years. One-third of the total coal produced goes to the utilities which now represent coal?s major market. Utilities used 160 million tons of coal in 1957, and the estimated quantity for 1967 is 275 million tons, and for 1977 is 525 million tons. It is predicted that 85% of steam-electric power will be generated by coal in 1975.

The Wharton No. 2 Mine of Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates is located about 60 miles south of Charleston, West Virginia in Boone County. Daily production is 6,000 T.P.D. on a two-shift basis. The Hernshaw Seam is mined by conventional equipment with one continuous miner in areas where conditions are suitable. The plant is on Cow Creek .Branch of Pond Fork, which in turn flows into the Little Coal River at Madison, West Virginia. When the mine was opened in 1948, plans were developed to build a dual Baum jig plant complete with mechanical and thermal drying, and because full production would not be reached for several years, it was decided to install only one Baum jig setup although the complete structure was erected. This phase of the plant was placed into operation early in 1949, The rated capacity was about 300 T.P.H. of 5" x 0 raw feed to the jig. Being a drift mine, the 10-ton mine cars are dumped at the Headhouse, crushed to 8" in a double roll crusher, conveyed 780 feet downhill to the picking .house where the +5" slate is removed by pickers. All coal is crushed to 5" and 5" x 0 is conveyed 150 feet to the cleaning plant. Further describing the plant growth, the second jig setup was installed in 1954 to clean the increased production. During this operating period, exhaustive tests had ,been run on the plant bleed which was an overflow from the large sludge tank located inside the plant, When the second jig addition was undertaken, 5-14&apos; diameter and 12-8" diameter cyclones with a 9-disc filter were installed for the solids recovery and water clarification system, However, the circuit was not closed and a bleed of part of the overflows from the 8" diameter cyclones was still necessary, To comply with the State Water Commission regulations on stream pollution abatement, four pumps in series were installed to discharge the waste water behind the refuse pile.

Though the use of continuous mining machines consolidated the operations of cutting, drilling, blasting, and loading in one machine that would theoretically provide uninterrupted production, it was soon realized that the face haulage and roof support operations remained as major impediments to continuous production. The ability to provide not only continuous cutting and loading, but also continuous haulage and roof support (see Fig. I), was the basis for the introduction of mechanized longwall systems in this country from Europe in 1951. The early systems employed friction props for roof support, but were to become obsolete shortly after introduction of the first hydraulically powered, self-advancing supports in 1960. Since then, use of the longwall technique has grown to the point where it is currently providing more than 5% of the annual output of underground coal mines in the United States. The shortwall system had its origin in Australia, but was first introduced into this country in 1962 following the development of powered roof supports. It, too, provides for continuous cutting, loading, and roof support (see Fig. 2), but has not experienced the widespread popularity of longwall due to its inherent inability to easily provide for continuous haulage. While there are in the neighborhood of 100 longwall systems currently in operation in this country, there are only a handful of short- wall operations providing production of slightly more than 907 184.7 t/a (1,000,000 stpy) Both of these systems provide uninterrupted roof support for face operations by means of hydraulically powered steel roof supports. In each case, the coal removal consists of open-end cuts made from the narrow end of a large rectangular pillar (panel) which has been blocked out by continuous miners developing entries around its perimeter. However, this is the extent of the similarities between the two systems. It is hoped [ ] that the information presented in this chapter will enable the reader to better understand the two mechanical systems and the mining concepts involved in their employment.

The U.S. Geological Survey has for many years been flying and compiling aeromagnetic surveys. The aim is complete coverage of the United States, about half of which is presently done. Colored aeromagnetic maps at a scale of 1:1,000,000 are published as the states are completed; Minnesota and Colorado have been published. Michigan, Iowa, Nevada, Utah, Maryland and Virginia are presently being processed. Some of the most spectacular data collected to date is from the Piedmont of the Eastern United States. I am going to discuss a preliminary aeromagnetic map of the Piedmont region between New York and North Carolina, where coverage is nearly complete. This map has been compiled from many surveys. Flight spacing over Piedmont rocks is 1/4 to 1 mile with flight elevation of 500 feet above ground. The spacing over the Virginia Coastal Plain and Valley and Ridge regions is wider at 2 - 3 miles. Much of the data in Virginia has been produced by the Virginia Division of Mineral Resources. The map is colored on a spectral color scheme with red for the higher intensities and violet the low intensities. Each color represents a 100 gamma interval. Some of the highest intensities are beyond the range of the 13 colors - these are left white. It is necessary, of course, to remove first, the Earth&apos;s main magnetic field. The Geological Survey uses the International Geomagnetic Reference Field or IGRF (Fabiano and Peddie, 1969). The use of color in aeromagnetic maps is not new, but then not common. We have found that colored aeromagnetic contour maps are more useful by far than the uncolored versions because they allow the user to instantly compare intensities in widely separated areas and visualize long wavelength anomalies even when numerous short wavelength anomalies&apos; are superimposed. One tends to see only steep gradients on uncolored aeromagnetic maps, the broad anomalies being quite invisible. We feel that colored maps take the place of various mathematically derived maps such as second derivative or averaged maps.

Slimes, especially clays, are detrimental to several processes in the Mining Industry. The efficiency of classification, clarification, gravity separation, and flotation decreases significantly in the presence of slimes and clays. This problem is particularly critical in the Phosphate and Sulfide Industries. To reduce the effect of slimes in mineral processing, several desliming techniques and chemical additives are used, such as sodium silicate, sodium carbonate, sulfuric acid, tripolyphosphate, hexameta phosphate, etc. Lately, the Mining Chemical industry has shift to more “Specifically Developed” reagents that offer the most efficient and cost effective performance, mainly using organic polymers. For this purpose, the Mining Chemical Industry needs to understand the crystal chemistry of minerals, the chemistry of the aqueous media, the interactions in solids-aqueous-gas interfaces, the rheology of the system, and the plant operation conditions and parameters. This paper describes the use of surface chemistry fundamentals on the design of an organic polymer capable of modifying the rheology of clayish slurries of a phosphate ore. The change in the rheological characteristics of the clayish phosphate slurries allow fine ore particles to settle faster by reducing the slurry viscosity. Thus, abetter separation of the ore from the slimes is possible using gravitational or centrifugal forces. As examples of the application of this reagent, industrial and pilot plant tests on desliming using tanks and hydrocyclones are presented. These tests showed the reduction of 32%-36% in ore losses for different phosphate ores during desliming operations, and the increase of cyclones desliming efficiency to 80%. Tests were also carried out to improve the rejection of unwanted iron bearing slimes in phosphate feed. These tests demonstrated that it is possible to reduce by 0.25%-1.23% Fe2O3content in the flotation feed product. As a result, significant economical benefits are observed with the use of this new technology without any adverse effect on down stream operations, such as clay settling or phosphate flotation.
