BRITISH Guiana, Great Britain's only South American colony, may be reached by very comfortable steamers, both from North America and Europe. The trip from North American Atlantic ports requires about 12 to 14 days; that from Europe about 18 to 20 days. A number of steamship lines, including Canadian, American, and Dutch, have regular sailings between North America and British Guiana, with calls en route at various interesting ports in the West Indies and northern South America. Moreover, several lines, including British, German, and French, have steamships operating regularly between Europe and the West Indies. Indeed, so popular have the West Indian voyages become in recent years that, during the winter months, special cruises in considerable number are organized for many vessels that ply in the trans-Atlantic service in the summer. A trip to British Guiana, therefore, has become a delightful experience. After visits at the various attractive Leeward and Windward islands and Trinidad, the approach to the low, flat, British Guiana coast, with its muddy coastal waters extending for many miles offshore, is somewhat of a contrast. Arrival in Guiana waters is signalled by the appearance of the modern high-power Demerara Light, located "on a shoal about twelve miles from the mouth of Demerara river. From this point, if the tide is right, a pilot takes the steamer across the bar, eight to ten miles offshore, and into Georgetown harbour. At high tide, the water above the bar ranges from 15 to 18 feet in depth, depending on whether it is neap tide or spring tide; at low tide, the corresponding depths are 9 to 11 feet. As the bar is of soft mud, however, it is usually possible for vessels to pass over it with a draught of about two feet in excess of that indicated by the tide tables. Upon nearing the shore, one sees first the Georgetown wireless towers, then the light-house and the tall chimneys of sugar mills and of various factories in Georgetown, and finally the palms and other tropical trees and the houses of Georgetown itself along the sea shore and the east bank of Demerara river. Extensive wharves operated by various exporting and importing companies stretch along the river bank and activity prevails in Georgetown harbour. The principal exports are sugar, rice, gold, diamonds, bauxite, balata, lumber, fruit and other tropical products. The imports are food-stuffs, wearing apparel, and manufactured materials of many kinds.

"Threshold limit values (TLVs) for NO and NO2 have been reduced drastically in 2016. Emissions of diesel engines have been reduced in the last decades. In many cases this is not enough to stay under required TLVs. Remaining gas in the blasted rock is set free during loading and transport. At the end, only a combination of measures with a further reduction of diesel motor emission, replacement of diesel driven vehicles by electric equipment, new explosives with reduced NO and NO2 production, changes in the organization and effective ventilation measures can ensure that the TLVs are not exceeded. KEYWORDS Blasting fumes, Gas measurement, Gases, Threshold Limit Value (TLV) SHORT HISTORY OF EXTRACTION OF RAW MATERIALS The extraction of raw materials—besides haulage and transport—is one of the main processes in mining and tunneling. The principal objective is the creation of a material which can be transported from the place of extraction (face) to another place for further processing or direct use. Furthermore, recently a desired grain size distribution has become more important. A revolutionary development took place in the course of centuries. With the use of primitive tools like shovels, chisel and iron in the 12th/13th century in Freiberg, ore mines performances of 12 16 cm per man and week could be reached in cross section of 1 m2. Recalculated with an assumed average density, this is a performance of 0.006 t/h. With the introduction of black powder into the subsurface in 1627 by Caspar Weindl in the city of Schemnitz (nowadays Banska Stiavniza), performances increased. A part of the hard extraction work was now done by the explosives. But first in 1767, it was recognized in a mine in Freiberg that more than 1 hole could be drilled (hand-drilling) and blasted. This discovery was so important that a plate with an inscription describes this event. The performance was increased more than 10 times compared to the extraction with chisel and iron. Since this time, drilling and blasting has been the most important innovation force for the increase of the performance. Problems with noxious blasting fumes led to the construction of the first tunneling machine by Henry Joseph Mouse in 1846 (beside shield machines from 1825) (Stack, 1982)). The triumph of mining machines started only interrupted by the two world wars. The development of hard rock boring machines (including roadheaders) was enforced after 1945. An almost complete extraction by hard rock boring machines was predicted for the turn of the millennium. And, indeed, one could find powerful machines in Canadian potash mines which were able to mine 1000 t of potash in 1 hour. That was an increase in the performance by several powers of ten. But already in the 1980s, it was recognized that the ambiguous goal could not be reached. Problems with wear of the tools, radius of curves, minimal length of openings, size and costs of the machines led to a more or less parity between drilling and blasting on one side and machines on the other side, of course depending on the field of use. For this reason, drilling and blasting is still the dominant extraction technology for raw materials. In the development of drilling and blasting technologies, the focus was mainly on the improvement of the safety but also on the increase of the blasting power and performance. Examples are tests for the increase of the power of ANFO explosives which were carried out in the 1970s and 1980s, in the former teaching mine “Reiche Zeche”. In the 1980s vehicles for loading and mixing of ANFO explosives have been developed, the blasting cab sensitivity of ANFO has been increased, emulsion explosives have been developed and up to now further developments like PMMA LOX EX explosives are on the way. At the turn of the millennium, 6 million t/a explosives have been used worldwide. Annual rates of increase of 2% have been predicted (Weyer, 1999). Western Canada is defined, for the purposes of this paper, as that part of the Dominion bounded approximately by the 95th and 141st meridians of longitude and the 49th and 80th parallels of latitude. It is comprised of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon, and that portion of the Northwest Territories lying to the west of the 95th. meridian. The first magnetic observations made in Western Canada were in the interests of navigation by sea. Observations were made by Captain Middleton in Hudson bay at Churchill and York Factory in 1725, and along the Pacific coast by Captain Cook in 1778 and Captain Vancouver in 1792. The first systematic magnetic survey in Western Canada was made between 1819 and 1826 by Sir John Franklin in his widely distributed explorations. It is of interest to find that while the first magnetic declination observations made in Hudson bay and along the Pacific coast were purely in the interests of navigation, the next investigations, which were made in the Western Arctic, included measurements of inclination and force with those of declination. There was a valid reason for this more complete research into the magnetic field as the construction of declination charts depended on the position of the north magnetic pole. Halley promulgated a theory 1683 that " the globe of the Earth may be regarded as one great magnet, having four magnetic poles, two of them near each pole of the equator, and that in those parts of the world which lie near any of those magnetic poles the needle is chiefly governed thereby, the nearest pole being always predominate over the more remote" . The position of a magnetic pole may be defined as a point where the inclination is 90 degrees and the horizontal force zero. It is obvious that the position cannot be' defined by declination observations alone since, for some distance from the magnetic pole, .the horizontal force is too weak to give directive force sufficient to effect the pointing of a compass.

The mining industry has been put under closer scrutiny in recent years, which has led to the adoption of a plethora of initiatives in countries around the world and by international organizations, some voluntary and others mandatory, governing economic, ethical, social and environmental practices of this industry. In order to plan appropriately, secure project financing, build value and manage risks, it is imperative to identify and understand the application of this new and evolving regime, which can be described under the general label of corporate social responsibility (?CSR?) law, and to incorporate compliance policies into the day-to-day operations of mining companies. Our paper and presentation will describe this new legal framework, which includes both ?soft? law and ?hard? law adopted at the international and domestic level that governs the actions of mining companies, particularly when operating in developing countries. While the notions of hard and soft law may seem abstract and grounded in legal theory, this paper shall demonstrate how these concepts concretely apply to companies in general, and to mining companies in particular. An analysis of the recent case law in this area as well as examples of corporate ?best practices? will illustrate the application of this body of law. As will be demonstrated through the case law, non-compliance of CSR law (both ?soft? law and ?hard? law) can lead to economic penalties, difficulties in accessing capital, loss of social licenses and even the withdrawal of permits and concessions. This confirms that now more than ever, ethics and sustainable practices in mining are fundamental to building a successful business model.

After a brief review of the various hydrocarbon storage methods currently being utilized and statistics on underground hydrocarbon storage, this paper will briefly describe the technology involved in solution mining salt to create caverns of engineered shape and size and briefly discuss the economical and environmental advantages of hydrocarbon storage in solution-mined salt caverns. Other possible uses of salt caverns will be mentioned.

Characterization of second phase particles is important with regard to their influence on mechanical properties of materials. Analytical electron microscopy offers the possibility to achieve complete characterization of inclusions. Complete characterization of inclusions means quantitative evaluation of their chemistry and the stereological parameters. A characterization technique based on integrated microscopy and involving scanning electron microscopy, image analysis and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry is presented. A discussion of the use of transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy is also presented for the characterization of very small particles and compounds (>100 nm).

Occupational epidemiology of the nickel-producing industry has found that inhalation exposures to certain nickel-containing substances are linked to respiratory cancers and to nonmalignant respiratory endpoints. Establishing such a linkage, however, is complicated by the fact that some diseases occur long after exposure to a causal agent (i.e., some diseases have long latencies). Furthermore, most chemical agents (especially nickel substances) vary significantly in their toxicological properties and their concentrations in workplace air have varied over processing history. Because of these complications, it is critical to understand historical exposures to specific nickel substances. To assist in this effort, the author focuses on the history of smelting and its related processes at Vale Canada’s (Inco’s) Ontario operations in the first half of the 20th century.

Although some mine hoisting systems incorporating steel wire ropes on drum hoists experience completely dependable performance on the hoist ropes for many years, other rope records illustrate an erratic behaviour pattern and, as such, become a source of concern to the operator. This paper describes the causes of the difficulties most commonly encountered and incorporates methods of providing preventative or corrective maintenance. When such a program is utilized wisely, within the allowable limits of shaft time available, it can be the means of avoiding many unforeseen circum-stances and of reducing operating costs, as well as rope costs, to a mini-mum.

IT is a high compliment to be invited to present a pap::r on the subject of "Mining in the National Economy". To cover it adequately would need the knowledge of the economic geologist and of the technical mining engineer, together with the arts of the statistician and of the economist in general, allied with generous psychic powers. Further, one should embellish the tale with a touch of drama. It is comforting that the subject is so broad that whatever may be said within the compass of a paper like the present, can hardly be criticized as going beyond the terms of reference. A conventional approach would be to begin with the noteworthy statistics of the mining industry of yesterday and today. But in the present company this would be "carrying coals to Newcastle"-or to give the venerable metaphor local colour, "nickel to Sudbury". Such statistics are available in all their stimulating detail in our official publications. Let us tackle at once, therefore, as a less hackneyed theme, the relationship of mining to other phases of the Canadian economy. RELATION TO TOTAL PRODUCTION While mining occupies a position of less importance than manufacturing or agriculture in Canada, its relative contribution has greatly increased during the post-war period. Due to the fall in wholesale prices, the net value of production in Canada has shown a decrease averaging about 1.5 per cent per year during the post-war period, though its volume of course has gone up. Mineral production on a value basis, on the other hand, showed a gain of 2.8 per cent per year. Mineral production was only 5.14 per cent of the net value of production of all kinds of commodities in 1919, bur from 1929 to 1936 the proportion rose steadily rill it reached no less than 12. 76 per cent in the latter year.

Since 1978, Syncrude Canada Ltd. has been expanding steadily its oil sand mining and processing capacity while reducing unit energy requirements. At the current rate of ~180 M tonne/year oil sand, the originally adopted Karl Clark?s 80°C version of the Hot Water process would require some 53 PJ (53 x 1015 Joule) heat. If this amount of heat were to be derived from burning natural gas it would cost $369 M/y (at $7/GJ). Fortunately, effective recovery of waste heat from the upgrading operations at the Mildred Lake site obviated the need for water heating with natural gas. The oil sand hydrotransport technology, first utilized commercially in the mid-nineties at Syncrude?s North Mine, reduced slurry temperature from ~80°C to ~50°C, cutting the unit heat requirement from 293 MJ/tonne to 183 MJ/t. However, in the new 100 Mt/year Aurora Mine even a 50°C process temperature would still require 18 PJ of heat energy per year. Only limited quantity of 65°C water could be imported from Mildred Lake site and some waste heat would be available from Gas Turbine Generators. A new, Low Energy Extraction (LEE) process was developed to minimize heat requirements by further reducing process temperatures to 25°C in the slurry pipeline and 35°C in the Primary Separation Vessels (PSV). Unfortunately, when applied to certain ore facies in Aurora, the LEE process yielded disappointing bitumen recoveries, necessitating an increase in slurry temperatures from 25°C to 35°C in the pipeline and from 35°C to 42°C in Primary Separation. In 2004, an Optimized Low Energy process (OLE) was developed and piloted at Syncrude Research using a 2000 kg/hour pilot plant. In the OLE process, most available heat is applied up-front to produce 45°C pipeline slurry at a density of 1.58 kg/l. Once the pipeline conditioning process is completed, the slurry is flooded with cold (10°C) water, resulting in PSV temperature of 34°C. The overall heat and water requirements are the same, or slightly lower, compared to those of the LEE process ? but without the penalty in bitumen recovery. Processing 100 Mt oil sand at 34°C (96 MJ/t), rather than at 50°C (183 MJ/t), will save $61 M/y (@ $7/GJ) and reduce green house gas emissions by ~47 %. The OLE process is currently being implemented at the Syncrude Aurora Mine.

"Mercury bearing ore bodies are often treated for the production of copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver. The mercury deports either to tailings or is collected during various stages of the extraction process. This paper reviews the relationship between various mercury collection processes and the subsequent management of the mercury by-product or waste. It focuses on mercury removal sequestration including cementation, sulphide precipitation, bulk neutralization, and carbon adsorption. Long term mercury management strategies including third-party stabilization, stabilized mercury co-disposal, secure storage, and mercury recycle are also evaluated. INTRODUCTIONMercury is produced in North America as a by-product of non-ferrous metals processing and from recycling of products such as dental amalgam, fluorescent lamps, and thermometers. Its toxicity is recognized to have significant negative impacts on the environment and human health. As a result, many countries are adopting regulations limiting mercury use and its uncontrolled release.The European Union banned mercury exports in 2011 and the United States will do so in 2013. The export bans aim to prevent mercury use in developing countries for activities such as artisanal small scale gold mining. However, by-product mercury production from the non-ferrous metals industries continues.These factors contribute to an oversupply of mercury and the need to find suitable treatment methods for the long term management and storage of mercury and mercury bearing materials."

"An expert system application for supervisory control and optimization of the indurating process at the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC) has been developed and installed in closed-loop. Prior to the installation of the expert system, the indurating machine was rebuilt and the instrumentation revamped. A Foxboro I/A Distributed Control System (DCS) was installed for regulatory control, and a new control strategy configured. The modernization of the regulatory control has resulted in significant improvement in both production rate and product quality. Expert system control was implemented in September 1996. Preliminary indications are that the expert system has further improved the consistency of product quality, enhanced fuel efficiency and increased productivity. The expert system considers both wet and dry sections of the circuit, and its optimization scheme is driven by pellet tumble index and compression strength. Statistical Process Control (SPC) rules were implemented in the expert system as part of the quality analysis and control scheme. The expert system application was developed and delivered using the Comdale Expert Optimizer (CEO), and has been in continuous closed-loop control since its installation. The system development and implementation is described, and preliminary benefits are presented..... IntroductionIn early 1996 the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC) contracted Comdale Technologies of Toronto to develop and implement a real-time expert system for optimizing the indurating pelletizing furnace at our plant location in Labrador City, Newfoundland.The decision to install the expert system has been timely. Like many other resource-based industries in increasingly competitive markets, IOCC recognizes the need to find ways to improve the efficiency of our production process and ensure that product quality is maintained at the highest levels. With the Labrador City plant producing 11 million tons of iron ore pellets annually, implementing the best technology solutions to meet these objectives is critical."

Efficient separation of minerals is the essence of mineral processing. Separation of hexagonal pyrrhotite in processing of Ni-Cu sulphide ores was investigated together with particle size effects with respect to selective flotation recovery of pentlandite and nickel. The recovery by size response was compared for sodium metabisulphite (SMBS), triethylenetetramine (TETA) and their combinations with amyl xanthate as a collector. The pyrrhotite recovery for all sizes was lower than that of pentlandite for the blank case as well as individual cases with SMBS and TETA. For pyrrhotite, the recovery by size relations in the case of individual uses of reagents were mainly determined by recovery losses at coarser size range (>74 um), which occurs at a coarser size for pentlandite (>212 um). The combined use of SMBS and TETA, and the associated synergistic effect very significantly knocked down the pyrrhotite recovery to less than 7% that was a maximum for the –10 um (attributable to hydraulic entrainment). High recovery of pentlandite in a wide range of intermediate sizes and drastically low recovery of pyrrhotite resulted in a very efficient separation of pentlandite from pyrrhotite in all sizes. Separation of this mineral is discussed in relation to fundamental functionality of the reagents used.

This paper will describe the experience gained and explain the deductions made from the phenomenon of the great squeeze which occurred at Brule Mines. The first indication of the commencement of the squeeze was the breaking of posts on the high-side rib of the slope. At first we thought this was due to a lateral pressure only, and we renewed the broken posts with new ones, the result being that the new posts also were soon broken. A noticeable bending and breaking of the collars occurred, with a corresponding reduction in the height of the haulage slope. These symptoms were also evident on the counter above the slope, indicating that the trouble was of an exceptional nature. In the meantime, we had concentrated a large force of repair men, renewing broken timbers and brushing the roof and floor, but in spite of all our efforts we could not overtake the damage being done. Our next problem was to find the cause of this trouble. We were in a new basin of coal (No. 2) which had only been opened a few months, as we had worked the previous four years in another basin (No. 3) where no such trouble as this had ever been encountered. Naturally our first thought concerned the adequacy of the size of the pillars. We had worked in the No. 3 south basin for the previous four years. without any such experience, with 60-feet pillars between slope and counters; whereas we had established 100-foot pillars in the No. 2 south basin between the slopes and counters with an 80-foot pillar between counter and first line of cross-cuts, and 100-foot pillars between the breasts.

"400 cubic foot Agitair Flotation Cells are in use at Sherritt Gordon's Fox and Ruttan Mine Cu-Zn concentrators. The 4 impeller model No. 120, used at the Fox Mine Operation, appears to offer superior agitation and aeration qualities compared to the single impeller model 120A, in use at Ruttan. The advantages of the model 120 are most significant with ores of high specific gravity and coarse grind.IntroductionSherritt is using 400 cubic foot Agitair flotation machines at both the Fox and Ruttan Mine Concentrators.At the 3000 tpd, Cu-Zn Fox concentrator, 18 model 120 machines have been in operation since May, 1969.The 10000 tpd, Cu-Zn operation at Ruttan utilizes 49 model 120A machines. The plant started operation in May, 1973.The 4-impeller model 120 flotation cell has been marketed by Galigher since the early 1960's but the single impeller model 120A is relatively new.Model 120 Agitair -Cell DataThe Model 120 (Dwg. 1) has floor dimensions of 101 x 10' and a lip height of 2~ to 4 feet to provide up to 400 cubic feet of volume. This machine is shown with a froth crowder and stabilizer plates which are optional.Each motor drives two agitators. 20 HP is recommended by Galigher but 25 HP is more realistic with massive sulphides. The SG of ?ox ore is about 3. 6.The Model 120 can handle up to 600 cubic feet of air per cell at 2 psig which requires 5-6 HP at the blowers. Air volume to each impeller is controlled by a valve from a main header.During the first 3 years of operation at Fox there were few mechanical problems with the 120's."

THIS paper discusses testing and quality control of milled asbestos fibre. It has been composed with the intention of: (I) Summarizing past, present and probable future methods of testing and classifying the various grades of commercial asbestos produced by the Quebec asbestos industry. (2) Acquainting those unfamiliar with the methods used for evaluating, testing and controlling the grading and the quality of Quebec chrysotile asbestos fibres with some of the physical and chemical procedures currently used for that purpose. (3) Discussing some of the complications facing the producers, such as variations in the orebody and special requirements of asbestos manufacturers. ( 4) Detailing some of the present quality control methods. The behavior of gold in hydrothermal systems is evaluated as a function of pH and oxygen and sulphur activities at temperatures to 250°C. Under conditions of stability of pyrite and argillic alteration as emblages, gold will be transported as bisulphide complexes. In systems containing significant amounts of arsenic, thioarsenide complexes may be important. Oxidation, dilution and reduction in sulphur activity would cause gold deposition from saturated solutions under these conditions. Gold chloride complexes will predominate under oxidized conditions where hematite or other oxides are stable and depo ition would result from increase in pH and/or reduction . Absorption and coprecipitation are po sible mechanisms of deposition for gold in certain low grade depo it . Low concentrations of gold in the transporting solution combined with the ignificant solubility of gold as bisulphide complexes, sugge t hydrothermal solutions rarely may be saturated with gold and coprecipitation with sulphides may be an important initial depositional process. Recrystallization of the sulphides in the presence of the hydrothermal solution would be re ponsible for release of gold to more table ite . In September 1945, when the Lynn Lake nickel orebody was discovered Sherritt Gordon Mines was a small copper mining company with rapidly depleting ore reserves at its single producing mine at Sherridon in the Cold Lake area of Manitoba, 100 miles north of The Pas. The company has been formed in 1927, largely through the efforts of Eldon L. Brown, a 27-year old mining engineer, with the financial backing of Thayer and Halstead Lindsley and the Gordon family. The Lindsleys were American mine promoters who had been successful in the Sudbury area, and the Gordons had extensive interests in the lumber industry in northern Ontario. Carl Sherritt, who gave his name to the company, was an American trapper and prospector who had staked the copper property and sold his interest to the new company. Carl Sherritt died in a flying accident at The Pas in 1928. The Sherritt Gordon Mine started production in 1931, shipping copper concentrate to the new Hudson Bay copper smelter at Flin Flon, Manitoba. In 1931 the price of copper was 18¢/lb. Within a year the price had fallen to 5¢ /lb and the mine was forced to close. It remained closed through the Depression years.
