Rock mechanics models are “data-limited,” i.e., one seldom knows enough about a rock mass to use computational models unambiguously. Statistical methods, however, are capable of being applied where there are good data but a limited understanding of certain natural phenomena, such as the creep of rock salt or elevated risk domains associated with violent failure of strata commonly referred to as coal bumps and coal bursts. Important to these evaluations are (1) having statistically valid data collected consistently and (2) incorporation of analytical calculations for quantifying geologic, mining and particularly geotechnical variables. By combining the strength of the statistical and analytical models, an improved “hybrid” model is created and utilized. To demonstrate the use of hybrid statistical-analytical techniques in rock mechanics problems, three case studies are used. The first case study involves a historic examination of a nuclear waste repository in rock salt, where mathematical models are built using excavation con- vergence data to identify significant variables and estimate future deformation and stability. This case study uses the convergence rate at up to 121 locations of different ages and geometries using monitoring data over the facilities' footprint excavated through 1998. The second case study focuses on ongoing analysis of coal burst mechanics and associated factors. Within the last three decades, a hybrid statistical-analytical methodology has been applied for identifying significant factors affecting coal bursts. This final hybrid model utilizes data from 30 case studies from Utah, Colorado, Kentucky, and other Eastern U.S. mines providing predictive capability for the entire United States coal fields. The last case study is the assessment of Castlegate Sandstone escarpment stability using historic data collected over 17,000-ft of sandstone escarpment exposure in the vicinity of longwall operations in Utah. Results from all three case studies are used for demonstrating the utility of the method in solving ground control problems.

In 1977, an article in World Mining (1) reported a total of 2726 rotary blast hole drills in service. This figure included only those machines produced by three of the manufacturers building drills of this type. The total, therefore, is much higher: Rotary drilling in the mining industry is big business to the manufacturers and suppliers involved, and a significant cost item, to mine operators. The time has come to take a hard look at rotary drilling technology with an eye to re¬ducing costs by increasing drilling efficiency. The efficiency of any rotary drilling operation is measured in terms of the rate of penetration achieved by the bit. In blast hole drilling, five factors affect the rate of penetration. They are: 1. Bit selection 2. Weight on the bit 3. Rotary speed 4. Hole cleaning 5. Formation properties Of these factors, all but one may be control¬led by the operator. Looking at any one in detail may reveal possible improvements in the system. Cleaning the hole is a good place to start. In order for a bit to perform at its maximum capability, each tooth or insert should strike fresh, clean rock as it falls into its drilling position. If the tooth or insert lands on previously drilled cuttings, a major portion of the energy delivered to the bit is absorbed in re drilling this broken material. A major portion of the interest, therefore, should be directed to the proper cleaning of the bottom of the hole.

Although techniques and practices of mining are highly advanced, coal pillar bursts or bumps continue to occur. Many uncertainties remain because of the highly anisotropic characteristics of coal seams that are associated with geologic structure and the mining-induced spatial redistribution of stress in coal pillars. Thus, to prevent fatalities in underground coal mining, continuous efforts are required to better understand the catastrophic failure mechanisms in coal mines. In this study, 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the Discrete Fracture Networks (DFNs) technique was performed to better understand the true anisotropic behavior of the specimens acquired from a bump-prone underground coal mine. The spatial characteristics of the dis- continuities (i.e., cleats and bedding planes) as input data for the 3DEC model are estimated based on the results of the laboratory tests and field observations. The DFNs explicitly generated the coal seam that was poorly or well cleated, indicating the different spacing between cleat apertures using the probability distribution functions for fracture density (or frequency) and size. The heterogeneity of the engineering properties (i.e., cohesion and tensile strength) are also considered by Monte Carlo simulations. Simulation results of laboratory tests using the 3DEC model and DFNs technique agreed well with the results of the laboratory tests. These calibrated results can be used as we seek to evaluate bump risk by modeling at field scale.

Nevada is primarily known today for its nation-leading production of gold and silver. However, industrial mineral production continues to play an important role in providing construction materials to help make the state the fastest growing in the United States. Aggregate production in Nevada was about 20 million tons in 1991. Most of that was used in construction in the fast-growing Las Vegas area. The state leads the nation in the production of barite and mined magnesite and has significant production of lithium carbonate, diatomite and gypsum. Other industrial minerals produced in the state include specialty clays, silica, lime and dolomite and relatively small production in salt, perlite and dimension stone. Industrial minerals operations are subject to state and federal permitting requirements, especially in the areas of air and water quality and mined land reclamation. As in all segments of the mineral producing industries throughout the nation, the amount and complexity of regulations affecting industrial minerals has increased significantly in recent years. Nevada is no exception.

Introduction The East-West Gateway Coordinating Council is an organization of local governments formed in 1965 to identify regional problems and to formulate policies, plans and programs to resolve them. The major goal of the Gateway Council is to improve the quality of life for the citizens of the St. Louis Region. While East-West Gateway Coordinating Council is the organization I represent and it only deals with the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, you will find one or more similar organizations in each of our nation's urbanized areas. As a result, for illustrative purposes, I will use my organization to portray what is happening nationwide. For example, in order to eliminate duplication, the Council reviews local applications for approximately 100 federally funded programs in such areas as highways, mass transit, parks, water treatment, and sewers before they can be sent to the appropriate funding agency. The Council's varied functions place it in a unique position of receiving more and more responsibility for developing strategies of implementation of various environmental regulations. This is due to the fact that environmental control is a relatively new field and we, as a country, are relatively inexperienced. The resulting regulations and guidelines will depend, to a great extent, on what the general public is willing to accept in terms of controls and what price they are willing to pay in terms of taxes and increased costs. The Telfer Project, Australia's newest, largest and most remote gold mine, treats 480,000 metric tonnes of ore grading 9.33 grams per tonne derived from open pit mining operations. Coarse gold is recovered by gravity concentration with jigs and further upgraded using a continuous strake, table and by amalgamation. Remaining gold is recovered in a cyanide circuit and incorporates flat bottom air agitators, CCD and stellar filters for clarification and precipitate removal. Overall recovery into bullion averages 98 percent. The mill incorporates a number of design features which allow for maximum efficiency and security using a minimum number of operating personnel.

During the past few years, a completely new concept has been applied to the design of drives for operating at very low speeds. In this, the motor is supplied by a variable-frequency thyristor cyclo-converter. Today, frequency converters with practically unlimited power ratings can be constructed. The system frequency of 50 or 60 Hz is reduced to about 10 % of these values. This makes it possible to operate the synchronous motor, which has a correspondingly high number of poles, at the extremely low speed of the driven mill, i.e, without interposed gearing. The first motors of this type were built to drive ball mills in the cement industry, which are very similar to those employed for ore processing. Here, too, the tendency is to build units of ever increasing capacity. In the case of conventional drives with mechanical gearing, this involves correspondingly increasing difficulties. These difficulties have prompted various studies of the possibility of applying the new type of drive to ore mills as well, but a gearless drive has not yet been built for this application. However, gearless drives for ore mills will certainly materialize soon and it was therefore considered a logical step to report at the A.I.M.E. Conference on the experience gained with these drives in the cement industry, and on the present state of development.

As can be guessed from the subtitle, this paper will not be a geologist's one since neither of the authors is a professional geologist. This will be an attempt to present the various aspects of the legal, economic and geological setting that condition the exploration for mineral resources in Haiti. Before going any further, we are going to present a summary of our rather short mining history. One must first mention that Caribbean countries are latecomers to the mining business. If we go back to the colonial period (1500-1600's) there are net many traces of mining activity. The major exception to this is the recovery of alluvial gold in Hispaniola, Puerto-Rico and Cuba and also some sporadic copper mining in Hispaniola (notably in Haiti near the city of Gonaives and in some of the old mining districts in Santo-Domingo). These easily minable deposits were quickly exhausted and mining quite naturally came to an end as agriculture rose as the major economic activity. In the Haitian case, aside from very erratic mention during the 19th Century of the presence of some minerals (i.e. haematite, chalcopyrite) no serious geological work was undertaken. In the meantime, the peasants in the northern part were still looking for alluvial gold in some streams but this amounted to next to nothing. One has to come to the 1920's to find the first comprehensive geological survey. At the time, the country was under the military control of the United States. The American Government sent a team from the U.S.G.S. headed by the late W. Woodring to initiate a survey of the country. Given the lack of transportation, this was a tough task and Woodring and his associates did it magnificently. As a result of their efforts, they published a very thick piece of work of more than 600 pages. "The Geology of the Republic of Haiti" although it was published in 1924 is a classic and is a must for anyone interested in the geology of Haiti.

It is ap-parent from observing the industrial practice of sulfide mineral flotation over the last decade that progress is being made in optimizing the operating aspects of flotation. Examples of this are the availability of improved instrumentation and related computer control devices, the modification of mechanical flotation cell designs, the introduction of column cells, better reagent dosage control, blending of feed ores, increasing attention to coarse and fine particle separations, the successful introduction of new frother chemistries, etc.

In the last three years there have been four uncontrolled heating events in mines that have been attributed to the use of polyurethane foam as a void fill product. These heating events are due to the exothermic reaction that occurs during application of these polymeric products. These events led the Mine Safety and Health Administration to issue a safety alert on polyurethane products used in void filling and ground consolidation in mining, with the goal of educating the mining community about this potential hazard. This paper provides an overview of various types of polymeric products and best practices, the factors that contributed to the heating events, and case studies involving polymeric products.

The Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) is part of the Ottawa River Action Plan and will greatly reduce the frequency of sewage overflows into the Ottawa River during storms. The project consists of the design and construction of two TBM tunnels running EastWest (EWT) and NorthSouth (NST) along 6.2 km in total, and multiple shafts and support buildings. Contractor Dragados Tomlinson JV (DTJV) was awarded the 169 million CAD construction contract in 2016 and the CSST will be in operation in 2020. Dr. Sauer & Partners (DSP), supported by Intecsa-Inarsa, was responsible for the detailed design of the precast concrete tunnel lining as well as the geotechnical risk management program. This paper addresses TBM selection, critical tunnel sections, geotechnical risk management and rock mass grouting as a geotechnical risk mitigation measure. Successful collaboration of Owner, Owner’s Engineer, Contractor and Contractor’s Engineer led to a safe and cost-effective design and construction

Stability assessment of entry roofs is an essential precursor to all underground design. Both multi-seam interaction and longwall mining can subject entries to radical changes in the surrounding stress field. Such loading changes frequently produce instability and failure in the roof, floor and pillars. Roofs are shown to be vulnerable to stress-induced failures, particularly when the load is unsymmetrical. To predict the effects of changes in stress field, roof failure conditions under increasing loads were studied using finite element analysis and body loaded photoelastic models. A large range of geologic conditions were evaluated and incorporated into the model using Monte Carlo methods. Entry analysis using the model showed the roof to be particularly vulnerable to shear with the location of the failure site changing to meet loading and geologic conditions. Results were correlated with field data to determine stress levels at which failure could be expected to occur. Based on this research a roof stability model SESAME was constructed for roof stability evaluation under specified loading conditions.

For most geologists and miners the term "asbestos" refers to a group of highly fibrous silicate minerals that readily separate into long, thin, strong fibers of sufficient flexibility to be woven, are heat resistant and chemically inert, and possess a high electric insulation and therefore are suitable for? uses where incombustible, nonconductive or chemically resistant material is required. The United States Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) specifically refers to the naturally occurring minerals chrysotile. amosite, crocidolite, termolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos as "asbestos" if the individual crystal fragments have the following dimensions; length -greater than 5 micrometers, maximum diameter -less than 5 micrometers, and a length to diameter ratio of 3 or greater. Since asbestos has been identified as one of the ten most carcinogenic substances (a cancer causing agent) it has become, for many government regulatory agencies, a major issue concerning banning emissions to the environment.

A high calcium fluidized-bed combustor ash was shown to be an effective binder for iron ore pellets at dosages of 1 % to 2% of the magnetite concentrate weight. Magnetite pellets that were between 1.1 and 12.7 mm (7/16 and 1/2 in.) in diameter were produced with dry crushing strengths greater than 22.3 N (5.0 lb-force) per pellet, which is comparable to the results produced using conventional bentonite binder. The effectiveness of fly-ash-based binders was considerably improved when calcium chloride was added as an accelerator. The addition of calcium chloride at a rate of 0.1 % to 0.2 % of the total powder weight increased the strength of the dried pellets by as much as 22 % compared to the strength of pellets made using fly-ash without accelerators.

Blast-induced rock mass displacement can have a significant impact on ore loss and dilution. The mischaracterization of the grade boundaries both prior to, as well as a result of, blasting can lead to significant financial losses due to ore loss and dilution. Ore dilution occurs when waste material is miscategorized as ore and sent for processing or stockpiling, diluting the run-of-mine head grade and recovery. Ore loss takes place when valuable mineral is miscategorized as waste and sent to the waste dumps, thus never being processed and recovered. Extensive research has been conducted at the University of Queensland over the last fifteen years to understand the impact of blast movement on ore loss and dilution. Recent outcomes of this research have led to the development of innovative tools and techniques to measure and model blast movement. These techniques have been implemented at the Ahafo gold mine in Ghana to understand blast movement dynamics and to implement solutions to reduce blast-induced ore loss and dilution. These solutions are validated through controlled trials and have been incorporated into site standard operating procedures.

Controlling long overland conveyors with multiple drive stations is a complex problem. The methods for controlling these belts in a steady state are well-covered in existing literature, but a discussion of starting and stopping strategies is absent. This paper outlines different control strategies for starting, stopping and running conveyors with multiple drive stations. To illustrate the benefits of applying the methods described in this paper, the authors show how their adoption corrected many of the control system problems at Essroc Cement’s overland conveyor, which features three drive stations separated from each other by long lengths of continuous conveyor belt.

The Jamaica Mining Legislation requires the bauxite companies operating in the island to reclaim all mined-out lands (except those legitimately excluded) to the level of agricultural or pastoral productivity, which existed prior to the commencement of mining. If it is not possible to reclaim a mined-out area the companies are required to reclaim an equivalent area of some other land which had not previously been used for agricultural purposes, or alternatively, pay to the government the sum of $120 (US) for every acre of land mined in the particular sector. In the seventeen years since the programme commenced the companies have in general chosen to reclaim most of the mined-out lands, rather than the cheaper alternative. However, the ultimate success of the programme will depend not only on actual reclamation per se but moreso the productivity of the rehabilitated lands. There are a number of reasons why the accent has to be placed on productivity of the lands. The first is that Jamaica is a small country (4,450 square miles) with a population of nearly 2 million people. Because of its mountainous terrain it is estimated that only 35% of the land area is cultivable in crops and pastures; hence this limited area, as well as that which can be reclaimed, must be made highly productive in order to support local and export demands. The Mining companies own over 200,000 acres of land, and of this acreage, it is conservatively estimated that about 75,000 will be affected by mining and will be reclaimed. As such, the use of the land after mining can have an important bearing on Jamaica's future agricultural productivity. The fly ash from coal combustion often has a high unburned-carbon content. This can make it unusable as a cement admixture, which is the major fly ash utilization market. As a result, high-carbon fly ashes currently disposed of by landfilling, at sometimes considerable expense. In this paper, the use of froth flotation to remove the unburned carbon from fly ash is described. Three different fly ashes were studied, which had Loss-on-Ignition (LOI) values of 6.79, 6.90, and 11.11 %. It was found that the use of an alkanolamide/oil mixture as a froth-conditioning reagent could greatly reduce the amount of collector needed, by increasing the affinity of the collector for oxidized carbonaceous surfaces. For each of the three fly ashes, froth flotation reduced the LOI of the ash to less than 2% which is well below the ASTM specification of no ' more than 6.0% LOI for Class F fly ash. Increasing carbon content of the ash tended to increase the quantities of reagents needed in flotation.
