In 1939, American industry got, off to a poor start, slowed down further during the first quarter, quickened after May, speeded up still more when war broke out again in Europe, and ended the year at a pace close to an all-time record. The average index of general business activity for the entire year (105) was well ahead of that for 1938 (86), failed to equal that of 1937 (110), and fell behind the average for 1929 (119) by a wide margin. THE heavy media separation process plays an outstanding role in the concentration of 4000 tons of zinc ore per day at the Mascot mill of the American Zinc Co. of Tennessee. Of the total tonnage, 72 pct is treated in the heavy media separation plant to reject 56 pct of the ore as a coarse tailing, which has a ready market. Concentrates from this separation are beneficiated further by jigging and flotation. Approximately 25 pct of the total zinc concentrate production is made in the jig mill. Jig tailings are ground and pumped to the flotation circuit where the balance of the production is made. Fig. 1 shows a generalized flowsheet of the mill. The Mascot ore is a lead-free, honey-colored sphalerite in dolomitic limestone, with lesser amounts of chert and some pyrite. A mineralogical analysis is given in Table I. After 10 years of successful operation with galena medium and treatment of nearly 10,000,000 tons of ore, a decision to convert to ferrosilicon was made early in 1948 because of the increasing price of galena and consequent high operating costs. The conversion was made on Nov. 6, 1948, and the results obtained since that time have shown remarkable improvement over those made with galena. The Table I. For entire life of galena operation, a credit of 40 pct of the value of the new galena added was realized from the sale of waste galena. comparisons given in this report cover the first 6 months of 1950 as representing the ferrosilicon operation, and the year 1947 as representing the galena operation. This was the last full year in which galena was used exclusively and is representative of the best work done during the 10 years of operation with this medium. After only 2 years' operating experience, with ferrosilicon and treatment of 1,807,585 tons many advantages have been revealed and are summarized in Table 11. Development Prior to the introduction of the heavy media process, all the mill feed was crushed through 5/8 in. and treated by jigging. A finished tailing assaying 0.66 pct Zn was made on rougher bull jigs, and cleaner jig tailings were ground for treatment by flotation. The first test work on the sink-and-float method of mineral beneficiation was carried out at Mascot in 1935, using a 3-ft cone and galena medium for batch tests. The following year a 6-ft cone was installed for pilot-plant work. This unit became a part of the mill circuit on March 1, 1936, and handled a gradually increasing tonnage in the next 2 years as the process developed to the point where it could treat all the + 3/8-in. material in the mill feed. Coarse jigging was then discontinued on March 1, 1939, and all coarse tailings have been made by the heavy media separation plant since that time. Feed Preparation: The original feed preparation plant consisted of a drag washer followed by two 4x10-ft Allis-Chalmers washing screens. A surge bin and two additional 5x12-ft AC washing screens were added in 1943. Use of primary and secondary washing screens was found essential to provide the cleanest possible feed for the cone and thereby avoid excessive contamination of the galena medium. Improved washing was obtained by replacing the drag washer with a 7x20-ft Allis-Chalmers scrubber, shown in Fig. 2, which has been in service since May 1944. Throughout the life of the galena operation, delivery of extremely muddy ore to the mill overloaded the medium cleaning system, and it frequently was necessary to cut off the feed and clean the medium for several hours until its normal viscosity had been re-established. The results of a comprehensive investigation of conveyance arrestment devices (safety catches) in United States coal mines are presented. Availability and use, performance, inspection, maintenance, testing, procedures, and regulatory requirements were investigated. Information was obtained from equipment manufacturers, mine operators, and regulatory-agency personnel, as well as from studies of domestic and foreign mining safety regulations. Traditional mine hoists and commercial elevators for mine use were investigated. Results of this and an earlier study of wire-rope practice in United States coal mines show a continued need for conveyance arrestment devices. A wide variety of these devices are in use. Only two types have been proved reliable for stopping a conveyance without injuring passengers or equipment. These are elevator overspeed-actuated wedge-clamp (Type B) safeties and broken-rope-actuated devices for wooden guides using a single-tooth-dog design developed in Ontario as a braking element. Elevators are widely used in U. S. coal mines. When maintained according to American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Specifications A17. I and A17. 2, they appear to present no major arrestment problems. Of 42 coal-mine hoists used for man transport that were inspected, 30 are in vertical and 12 in inclined shafts. Twenty-four vertical shafts use wood guides; 6 use steel. The 12 inclined-shaft systems use flanged-wheel T-rail guidance. Two wood-guided vertical-shaft systems use the single-tooth Ontario-type dog; the other 22 use multi-toothed wedges, cams, or dogs that have been proved highly unreliable. The arrestment devices in the six steel-guided vertical-shaft systems and in six of the inclined-shaft systems cannot be evaluated because performance data are lacking. The remaining six inclined-shaft systems have no arrestment devices at all. Of the 36 hoists with arrestment devices, the devices of 16 are never tested, the devices of 10 are actuated periodically with the conveyance at rest, and the devices of the other 10 are actuated periodically with a slow-moving conveyance. Although high speed is as probable as low speed in an emergency and would provide the best test of arrestment capability, no tests are performed in the United States which demonstrate the ability of an arrestment device to stop a loaded conveyance from high speed. Mine operators indicate little confidence in their conveyance arrestment devices, and manufacturers recognize a need to improve their products. Neither state nor Federal regulations provide a guide to this improvement. Mine operators, manufacturers, and state and Federal regulatory agency personnel would welcome specific guidance. In view of this, a set of application, design, actuation, stopping-performance, and testing and inspection criteria is presented as a guide to eliminating the inadequacies of these devices. Recommendations are included for improving hoist controls and machinery directly affecting conveyance safety.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines conducted 22 full-scale blasts to determine the effects of delay and explosive type on fragmentation. The shots were conducted over a period of 7 years in three limestone quarries and one granite quarry. Hole diameters, bench heights, and number of holes varied from 6.4- to 14-cm, 6.7- to 14-m, and 4- to 24-holes, respectively. Explosive performance and actual firing times were measured and screening was used to assess the fragmentation.

The magnetic after-effect, in the form of time decay of permeability (l/µ), has been used to obtain independent data on the solubility of' carbon in pure iron. The results differ slightly from the solubilities obtained through internal -friction experiments. The mechanism of the time decay being the magnetic analogue of internal friction, it appears necessary to explain the observed discrepancies, and some suggestions are made. THE purpose of this work was to establish the reliability of the time decay of permeability as a measure of dissolved interstitial in the body-centered-cubic lattice, and further, to establish techniques suitable for such measurements with samples of a form convenient for various other measurements. This particular sample form was the "epstein" strip, i.e., 25 cm by 3 cm by 0.035 cms. While the general conclusions are not limited by this geometry, there are two aspects of the samples that may be relevant: a) texture, and b) grain size, which ranged generally from 1 to 10 mm. Effects due to these two possible parameters were thought to be small and were not investigated. Calibrating the time decay technique and the other experimental procedures by measuring the solubility of carbon in pure iron suggested itself because of the accumulation of data on this subject through the related technique of the internal friction'; The essentials of this report have been published in a somewhat condensed form.5 Since then some additional data have been taken. It is the purpose of this paper to add these data and to provide more complete description of the experimental techniques than was possible then. The time decay of permeability is a form of the magnetic after-effect.6,7 Permeability is measured immediately after demagnetization (µº) and also long after (µ8). The time decay, ?(l/µ), is the difference 1/µ8 - 1/µ0 and has been considered to be proportional to the concentration of a dissolved interstitial6,8,9,12 The relaxation time! 7, is characteristic of a particular diffusion, and affects the permeability as follows: where he being the activation energy for diffusion of the interstitial. Reference is made to the works of snoek6 and Neel7 for a complete discussion. A brief exposition of the principal ideas may be in order here, as follows. On the basis of the simplest model, resistance against domain wall motion increases with time after demagnetization due to the diffusion of interstitials to preferred sites created by the magnetostrictive tetragonolization under the strong magnetic field. Thus permeability, measured with a small field after the abrupt removal of the large field, will continuously fall with the process of diffusion of the interstitials, and the total "time decay" (or "time decrease") should be proportional to the amount of interstitial in solid solution. In the present report, use is made only of the total time decay rather than of the nature of the progress of the decay; the only problem involved in this approach is the need for assurance that only one interstitial is contributing to the effect as used. It is felt that the special use made here of the total time decay warrants the conclusions. Other work has been going on elsewhere on the detailed study of the nature of the time decay.8'9 EXPERIMENTAL A) Materials—12-lb ingots were made in a vacuum furnace from high-purity iron and by a series of hot and warm reductions were brought down to 14-mil strip. This was cut into 25-cm epsteins. The pure iron was decarburized at 750 °C by hydrogen. The time decay measurement for the decarburized iron (see below) indicated a satisfactorily low starting level of interstitials. Grain growth to grain sizes of 1 to 10 mm was produced in the pure iron by a 700" anneal in hydrogen after a critical reduction of about 7 pct as suggested by previous trials. No measurement of texture in the pure iron was made. The grain size was taken to be large enough to be beyond any sharply critical size regarding solubility. B) Infusion of Carbon—Since the permeability measurement required about two dozen epsteins, a special method of carbon infusion had to be developed to ensure homogeneity of infused carbon. At the meeting of the Istitote in New York, in February, 1880," I described a process of determining sulphur iu metallic allphides, with especial reference to the determination of pyrites in coal. The procem, as then described, is as follows: A solution of sodium hydrate, of 1.25 specific gravity, is saturated with bromine. If an excess of bromiue is used it must be neutralized by the addition of a little more sodium hydrate. Titaniferous ores serve as a major feedstock for the production of a white titanium dioxide pigment, a titanium metal and several other titanium-based products. Such ores exist mainly as heavy mineral sands. Ilmenite is upgraded to intermediate products namely synthetic rutile and titania slag through the synthetic rutile route and the reductive smelting route respectively. Tronox KwaZulu Natal Sands (Pty) Ltd recovers high titania slag via the reductive smelting process while slag is used as a feedstock to the pigment industry and furnace dust from the gas cleaning plant is disposed as waste. Previous investigations have shown that such furnace dust can contain significant amount of titanium-bearing minerals. This study looks at the characteristics of the furnace dust obtained from Tronox KwaZulu Natal Sands and investigates a possible high temperature recovery route in detail. The furnace dust was examined by using x-ray fluorescence, x-ray diffraction, microscopy and laser-diffraction size analyses. The characterization work showed that the furnace dust was rich in titanium and iron, containing 49.4 wt% ??????2 and 29.5 wt% ????2??3. These oxides were associated with Si, Mn, K, and Al oxides as impurities. A Carbolite® vertical tube furnace was used to investigate the extent of formation of titania slag and metallic iron on a laboratory scale at 1500°C, 1600°C and 1650°C. The laboratory reduction tests revealed that the slag samples with an equivalent titanium dioxide content ranging from 70.9 -76.9 wt% at 1600°C and 1650°C could be obtained. The Fe content of the metallic iron samples produced ranged between 93.0 and 97.1 wt%. The experimental results were found to be in relatively good agreement with the FactSage simulations, both of which demonstrated the potential of producing a titania slag and a metallic iron from the furnace dust.

The coordination compound tetrakis(1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanediona to)zirconium(IV), [Zr(DBM)4], (DBM = dibenzoyl methane/1,3- diphenyl-1,3-propanedionol) was synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. [Zr(DBM)4] crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c (a = 24.769(4) Å, b = 10.216(5) Å, c = 19.314(4) Å, and = 101.541(5)°). The coordination geometry around the zirconium atom, formed by the eight O-donating atoms of the four -diketonates, is found to be a near-perfect square antiprism. Crystal packing is stabilized by C?H... interactions throughout the crystal lattice. This structure is a noteworthy example of the application of ambient condition synthesis of zirconium compounds in N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) as reaction and crystallization solvent, highlighting the possibilities of aerobic condition metal purification through chelation.

The equilibria in the Cr-N system have been investigated in the temperature range 1100° to 1310°C by reacting chromium powder with Nz-Hz gas mixtures. The solubility of nitrogen in chromium in equilibrium with chromium subsitvide ("Cr,N") is given by Chromium subnitride is nonstoichiotnetric; its nitrogen content is always less than that corresponding to the formula CrzN. The lattice paranzeters of quenched samples have been measured; c, and a. parameters are found to increase with increasing nitrogen content. The growth rate of the subnitride layer on chromium plates was measured by a thermogravimetric technique, using a silica spring balance. The self-diffu-sivity obtained from the theoretical analysis of the parabolic rate constant is found to decrease with increasing nitrogen content, i.e., with decreasing vacancy concentration in the nitrogen sublattice. The intrinsic nitrogen diffuivity is derived from another series of rate measurements using "CrzN" plates; the intrinsic diffusivity, DN = 3.2 X 10-a cmZ sec-' at 1200 C, is found to be essentially independent of- the subnitride composition. The concentration gradient was measured in a chromium subnitride layer by the X-ray method and found to be consistent with the derived diffusivity value. TWO chromium nitrides are known to exist:' the nonstoichiometric subnitride "CrzN" and the nitride CrN. In the present work the kinetics of the formation of chromium subnitride from chromium and nitrogen have been investigated at 1100" and 1200°C. In additional experiments the relevant equilibria have been measured. The data are used to evaluate the diffusivity of nitrogen in chromium subnitride. Since chromium nitrides are often found in chromium-containing steels, the results are expected to be helpful in the interpretation of the chemical reactions between chromium steels and nitrogen. Equilibria in the Cr-N system have been determined by several investigators.2"3 The rate of nitriding of chromium was measured by Arkharov et a1 .' in ammonia in the temperature range 800" to 1200°C. The parabolic rate law was observed. Due to the undefined nitrogen activity of the ammonia atmosphere, it is dif- ficult to interpret these rate data theoretically. An additional difficulty arises from the fact that the two-layer scale consisting of CrN and "Cr2N" was formed at the temperatures below 1030°C. The rate of nitriding of technical chromium (95 pct) was measured by Zaks in nitrogen at -1 atm in the temperature range 800" to 1300°C. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The chromium samples were reacted with Nz-HZ gas mixtures in a vertical tube furnace, wound with Pt-10 pct Rh resistance wire. The gas-tight reaction tube was of high-purity recrystallized alumina. In nitrogen solubility measurements the nitrogen content of chromium was determined by the Kjeldahl method, on samples quenched in the cold part of the furnace. The nonstoichiometry of the subnitride and the nitriding rates were measured thermogravimetrically using a sensitive (+0.1 mg) silica spring balance. For the equilibrium measurements samples of 1 g of chromium powder contained in high-purity alumina crucibles were used. In order to remove most of the oxygen and nitrogen impurities from the chromium, the samples were initially annealed in purified hydrogen until a constant weight was obtained. The chromium plates (approximate dimensions 2 by 1 by 0.08 cm) used for the rate measurements were machined from ingots obtained by arc-melting of iodine-processed chromium. According to manufacturers' specifications the purity of the chromium powder was 99.9 pct Cr and that of the iodine-processed chromium 99.99 pct Cr. Our own spectroscopic analysis of the chromium powder yielded 0.02 pct Fe, 0.05 pct Mn, 0.05 pct Si, and 0.02 pct Ti as major impurities with all the other detectable elements below 0.005 pct. The nitrogen partial pressure of the gas phase was controlled by mixing prepurified hydrogen and nitrogen with constant pressure head capillary flowmeters. Oxygen and water vapor were removed from the mixed gas by passing it through columns of platinized asbestos (450°C) and anhydrone. The gas flowed upward in the furnace with flow rates of 300 to 500 cu cm per min (25"~). Gas tightness of the furnace system was ensured by pressure checks at regular intervals. The furnace temperature was controlled electronically in the usual manner. The reported temperatures were measured with a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple and are estimated to be accurate within ±$C The X-ray measurements were made with a Debye-Scherrer camera and a diffractometer using chromium radiation {\Ka = 2.29092A). EQUILIBRIUM MEASUREMENTS The experimental results of the equilibrium measurements are contained in Tables I to In. Fig. 1 shows the solubility of nitrogen in solid chromium in the temperature range 1100" to 1310°C. In Figs.

"A hydrometallurgical route was developed to extract metals such as gold, silver, copper, and selenium from anode slime from Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex in Iran. For the extraction of copper by leaching, the anode slime was heated and stirred with 4 M sulphuric acid in the presence of oxygen. Optimal conditions for recovery of copper were temperature 80°C, mixing time 5 hours, and oxygen flow rate 2 L/min, resulting in a copper recovery of 94.47%. Silver and selenium were dissolved by leaching anode slime from which the copper had been removed with nitric acid. For gold extraction, anode slime was heated with aqua regia at 90°, and the gold then extracted with 2-ethyl-hexanol at a concentration of 0.5 M and phase ratio of 4. The extract was then stripped with soda solution at pH=10.5 and a phase ratio of 5. Finally, gold was recovered by precipitation with oxalic acid at a ratio of mass to volume 10 g/L. Total gold recovery was 80%. IntroductionDuring the electrorefining of copper, some metals are accumulated in the byproduct anode slime, which is an important source for recycling and recovery of these metals (Petkova, 1994). In this paper, a hydrometallurgical route is described for the recovery of precious metals from copper anode slime of Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex, which is located in southeastern Iran .Copper anode slime is black or gray powder with a particle size less than 200 mesh. Approximately 2 to 20 kg of anode slime is produced per ton of copper cathode. The slime is characterized by higher amount of Ag, Se, Pb, and Cu compared to other metals and a very low Au content (Khaleghi and Ghader, 2013).The copper anode slimes are composed of 11.69% selenium, 3.93% copper, 5.26% silver, 0.13% gold, and 45% barite, plus lead, tellurium, antimony, sulphur, and silica with small amounts of nickel, iron, zinc, and bismuth. Gold is one of the most important noble metals due to its wide applications in industry and economic importance, so recovery of gold from slime is more appealing than that of other metals. According to the World Gold Council (2013), the demand for gold has increased during the last decade. This increase is due not only to the increasing demands of the jewellery market, but also to the increasing demand for gold in industrial as well as medical applications (Ranjbar et al., 2014)."

After the presentation of the paper (published in the March Journal) the Vice-President said: "This paper is a very important addition to the considerable volume of work applications on this subject of pneumoconiosis. The disease, in all its various forms, has received attention from many, many great men, both in the medical world, and engineers. The fact that there is this big volume of publications of literature on it still doesn't mean that we can get anywhere beyond the old, simple injunction, that the prevention of pneumoconiosis does not depend on compensation, levies or anything else. It simply depends on allaying dust as quickly as possible. "This paper, however, is another scientific landmark and I think, in a cold and dispassionate way, it sets out some important points in this whole subject of the relationship of the levy - the money of compensation to the dust which causes it. "I have, personally, very little to criticise in this paper but when I listened to Dr du Toit's final conclusions, I wondered whether the words, 'Within the data available', aren't the key to this whole situation. I agree that he has demonstrated a workable relationship between the current industries for levy and dustiness, but among the factors which he lists as being important, I know that there is one which is missing. This is extremely difficult to evaluate. It's a factor which has destroyed, on so many occasions, the work which has been done by so many genuine, intent, honest people working in this field, and this is this unknown factor, this hidden factor of political opportunism, which has so often played a very important part in pneumoconiosis compensation. "How many of us have seen the grubby, grasping fingers of power-mad demagogues, and I can name them for you - but I won't - and also the blatant vote-catching of certain politicians interfering in this field. How, at the end of all that, the poor scientist, the poor dedicated man in the Mines' Department, who has to write the law of compensation, can operate, I do not know. "From this picture the ordinary layman recoils in horror. Among the casualties in this particular war, which has been fought over so many years, I am perfectly certain, are some of the criteria of certification, especially in '56/,57, when that extraordinary condition, known as 'pulmonary disability' was introduced. Inorganic acids such as sulphuric acid have found use together with certain reducing agents in leaching of copper-cobalt oxide ores. These reagents are not ideal due to the adverse effect the inorganic acids generally have on the environment and the high costs of the reducing agents. In this study a copper-cobalt oxide ore from the Central African Copperbelt was leached in two different environments; sulphuric acid in conjunction with hydrogen peroxide as a reducing agent and tartaric acid. The effects of acid concentration, reducing agent concentration, and temperature were independently determined for both leaching environments. The sulphuric acid concentration was varied between 0.4 M and 1.2 M and the concentration of hydrogen peroxide between 4.0 M and 6.5 M, while the tartaric acid concentration was varied between 0.15 M and 0.35 M. The temperature was varied between 20°C and 50°C. The results showed that the extraction of both copper and cobalt increased with sulphuric acid concentration, reaching a peak at approximately 0.8 M and then decreasing at higher acid concentrations. A similar increase and decrease in metal extraction was observed when the reducing agent was increased. In leaching with tartaric acid, the extraction of cobalt was much higher than that of copper, although extraction of both metals increased with acid concentration. Additions of small amounts of hydrogen peroxide were found to increase cobalt extraction in tartaric acid but had a minimal effect on copper. An increase in the solution temperature had a significant effect in the organic acid environment, with the effect on cobalt extraction being much more pronounced than on copper.

Robin 0. Williams (Oak Ridge National Laboratory)— The authors have questioned the degree to which the coherency strains between the iron-rich and chromium-rich phases are isotropic as proposed in Ref. 5 on the basis of the difference between the elastic properties of the two phases. The relative magnitude of the stresses is determined by the moduli as shown by Eqs. [2], [3], and [4] of Ref. 34. However, the moduli of the two phases have no direct bearing on the uniformity of either the stress or strain within either phase. The idea that the strains are isotropic within each phase (but normally of different magnitude and always of different sign) is based entirely upon the experimental observation that X-ray line broadening has not been detected even when the particles become rather large. It has not proven possible to grow the particles sufficiently large that they lose coherency. Based upon this lack of line broadening one can estimate an upper limit for the nonuniformity of the strains within each phase as follows. It is considered possible to detect line broadening if it is as great as 10 pct of the separation of the K, doublet for the (211) line using chromium radiation. The doublet separation would correspond to a total strain of 0.0017 such that the total variation of lattice parameter relative to the average lattice is now k0.05x0.0017 or something less than ± * For the present case the strain in each phase is roughly 0.002 such that the variation of strain within a phase will not exceed 5 pct. It is stated that the expression derived for strengthening for the hydrostatic straining as observed in this system would substantially overestimate the magnitude due to dislocation flexure. This is contrary to the conclusion reached in the original paper34 for the present range of particle sizes. What is the lowest temperature at which a has been observed to form in this alloy? M. J. Marcinkowski, R. M. Fisher, and A. Szirmae (nutlzors' reply)— -Williams' arguments based on X-ray findings for a chromium-rich precipitate and an iron-rich matrix strained to a common lattice parameter are certainly convincing. This being the case, there are no shear components of strain associated with the precipitate-matrix aggregate to interact with the shear components of the dislocation stress fields, contrary to the opinion expressed by the present authors. On the other hand, the present authors, in spite of this error, did not expect the shear interactions to be significant. The chief objection to Williams' model in the present case is that the various segments of the dislocation line are assumed to pass from one potential valley to the next independently of neighboring segments. This is only true for a highly flexible dislocation line, i.e., one whose radius of curvature is something less than the center to center distance between precipitate particles which amounts to about 90A in the present alloy. In order to maintain this curvature, an externally applied shear stress of at least 230,000 lb per sq in. would be required or about four times the observed stress. It is therefore concluded that the dislocation lines move rather rigidly through the lattice. This being the case, the forces on the dislocation resulting from the hydrostatic interaction between the stress fields of the edge-dislocation components and the precipitate particles should average out to zero; that is particles above the below the slip plane produce forces on the dislocation of opposite sign and therefore will cancel when averaged over the entire length of the dislocation. On the other hand, since the dislocation is not perfectly rigid, Williams' model may lead to some strengthening, but far less than that predicted. A second and equally serious objective to using Williams' strengthening model for the present alloys is that profuse wavy slip due to the motion of screw dislocations played a predominant role not only in the unaged alloys but in the fully aged ones as well. Since the screw dislocation has associated with it only shear components of stress the hydrostatic strengthening model no longer applies. In view of these arguments the present authors must reject Williams' model of strengthening as being pertinent to the present alloy system. The present authors have made no detailed study of the lowest temperature at which a forms in the quenched ferritic alloys. None was ever observed n the alloys aged at 500°C so that forma-tion must occur at temperatures higher than this and was therefore not a factor in the present study.

The effective employment of a pretensioned bolt within support structures requires an appropriate installation tension as a result of sufficient bolt head/nut preload. In this paper, a load indicator washer (LIW) able to withstand an assigned static loading as well as provide an appropriate pretension is presented. The different LIW breadths are numerically analyzed with ABAQUS finite-element code to estimate deformation when a designated 60 kN preload is applied. The numerical simulation employs the bilinear isotropic hardening constitutive law governed by the von Mises yield criterion. The simulation also considers the nominal temperature of the nut-LIW-rock bolt connection. Therefore, long-term relaxation effect on bolt pretension as a result of stress relaxation is neglected. The compressive force required to achieve the LIW predetermined deformation is the bolt pretension. It is drawn from the simulation results that LIWs with thicknesses of 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 mm are completely flattened when subjected to 28, 42.5, 65, 76 and 88 kN preloads, respectively.

Fourteen straight-run asphalts were prepared in the laboratory from bitumens obtained from three sources: (1) native bitumen from Rozel Point, Utah, (2). bitumen extracted from Athabaska bituminous sandstone at Canada, and (3) bitumen extracted from Edna bituminous sandstone outcropping in San Luis Obispo County, to seven asphalts with penetrations ranging from 19 to 287 at 77 F. were prepared from each of the bitumens. The yields of the prepared asphalts ranged from 74.5 percent for a 27-penetration asphalt from the Athabaska bitumen to 99.5 percent for a 271-penetration asphalt from the Rozel Point bitumen.

The Bureau of Mines, S. Department of the Interior) at, its Morgantown., W. Va., station, operating under a cooperative agreement with West Virginia University, is conducting research and development work on the problem of producing synthesis gas from coal. An important part of this work is the study of the gas purification necessary to meet the rigorous standards required to render the gas suitable for use in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of liquid fuels. One of the most detrimental impurities is sulfur in all forms, the maximum amount that can be tolerated being one-tenth of a grain per hundred cubic feet. Concentrations as low as this require the use of precise analytical methods to evaluate the performance of processes used for removing sulfur. At the same time the analytical methods should be rapid in order to reveal the failure of purification before damage to the expensive synthesis catalyst results. Although sulfur in unpurified gas is generally present as hydrogen sulfide and as organic sulfur compounds, the latter may be converted to hydrogen sulfide for analytical purposes. Thus a suitable method for the determination of traces of hydrogen sulfide may also be used for the determination of organic sulfur.
