A morfologia, dimensões e composição química de tribocamadas são fortemente dependentes das pressões e temperaturas existentes no contato e oriundas das reações das superfícies entre si, com a atmosfera, com os lubrificantes e contaminantes presentes no contato. No presente artigo foi analisada a formação de tribocamadas em pares DLCaço inoxidável testados por 180, 500, 1000 e 2500 horas em atmosfera de gás refrigerante R134a sem a presença de óleo lubrificante. A caracterização foi realizada por microscopia eletrônica de varredura espectroscopia de energia dispersiva (MEV-EDS) (morfologia e composição química) e interferometria ótica de luz branca (dimensões). Nas análises por MEV-EDS foram identificadas tribocamadas que se apresentaram mais pronunciadas nas superfícies do aço inoxidável sendo as mesmas oriundas de transferências mútuas entre os pares tribológicos bem como oxidação. A espessura das tribocamadas, por sua vez variou de 100 a 500 nm. Os resultados revelam que as tribocamadas são quimicamente estáveis e que suas espessuras não variam significativamente após mil horas de ensaio.

BOTH physical and economic factors are concerned in determining the optimum rate of depletion of a mineral deposit. The physical limitations are, in a large measure fixed by nature. Economic influences on the other hand, are man-made and subject to wide changes. Analyses of the interrelations of these two groups of factors are of major importance in selecting the optimum rate of production of petroleum and mining properties and in their valuation. Physical Influences PRIMARY limitations on the rate of mining are the rate of shaft sinking and underground development, the rate of hoisting, and the rate of sloping. These rates are largely determined by the physical features of a property. Technical methods which may be employed, and consequently the length of time required, are governed by the dimensions of the deposit, its attitude, depth, regularity, the unit value and character of the ore, the nature of the wall rocks, and similar factors.

OIL FLOTATION DISCUSSED BY SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SECTION . A meeting of the Section was held in the home of R. H. Norton, 335 W. 27th Street, on Mar. 10, thirty-two members and five guests being present. Vice-chairman Staunton opened the meeting with a description of an experiment he made with oil flotation, and then introduced the guest and speaker of the evening, L. C. Penhoel, of the South-western Engineering Co., who gave a very interesting and informal talk on the subject of Flotation. During the talk, as points were raised, there was a general discussion, in which valuable information was brought out. A number of examples of successful competitive, results by cyanidation and flotation in large milling plants in this country and Mexico were cited and discussed. The latter part of the meeting was devoted to a discussion of the bill introduced in the California State Senate, to license and register engineers. Mr. Ernest Strout gave a most favorable opinion of the principal of licensing mining engineers from his extensive experience in the working out of such a law on the Rand. All members who spoke were opposed to this bill as drafted but felt that the subject was of too great importance to the profession to attempt to amend the present bill in the week or two that remains, and that the passage of a bill that was so crude and inefficient for the achievement of the results desired, would harm the engineering profession. After the meeting adjourned a short time was spent in social intercourse, during which light refreshments were served. The appreciation and thanks of the Section is extended to Mr. and Mrs. R. H. IN a previous study1 of the effect of heating com-mercial titanium in air on its subsequent friction coefficient against other metals, as well as itself, it was found that the friction coefficient markedly decreased from a value of about 0.7 to about 0.3. A tentative explanation was given that surfaces normally produced at room temperature are not contaminated sufficiently to prevent seizing or welding of the titanium to the softer mating metals. The latter tend to cleanse themselves during rubbing over the harder titanium. It was thought that the lack of a contaminant protective film on the titanium was due to the high solubility of titanium for oxygen and nitrogen and hence an inability to form a contaminant oxide or nitride. This explanation requires the ratio of the surface absorption rate to the diffusion rate to become much lower at room temperature than it is at high temperatures. In order to check the phenomenon further, commercial titanium specimens were nitrided or oxidized at 800°C for 20 hr in flows of prepurified N2 and 01, respectively, at about 1/2 in. H2O above atmospheric pressure. Friction runs were made in argon using a freshly cut copper hemisphere (cut in argon) on surfaces cut successively into the diffusion layers in the titanium (cut in argon) using the techniques described in a previous publication.' DPH values (100 gram load) were made as a function of depth into the diffusion layer using a Tukon tester. Also, micrographs were taken at separate cross sections to indicate the diffusion layers. The results obtained are presented in Figs. 1 and 2, which show the "static" friction coefficient vs hardness for the nitrided and oxidized specimens, respectively. A separate measurement of the friction coefficient of clean copper vs iodide titanium also was made. From results reported in the literature' giving the oxygen and nitrogen contents as functions of the hardness, cross plots were made showing the friction coefficients as functions of the amount of interstitial solute. These plots are given in Figs. 3 and 4. From micrographs of the diffusion layers and the phase diagrams, it was deduced that the data in Figs. l through 4 correspond to the single phase a region. The points observed on the compound regions have been excluded from the figures. It is apparent that nitrogen or oxygen in solution in the a titanium markedly affects the friction coefficient against a softer mating metal. Discussion of Results These results are extremely interesting from both a practical and theoretical viewpoint. The theoretical implications will be discussed first. According to Bowden, the friction coefficient should be given to a good approximation by the relation where a is the fraction of contact area that has welded, a is the shear strength of weaker component, and H is the hardness of softer component. Using this relation alone, it is difficult to understand the results because none of the terms should be affected by a variation in the oxygen or nitrogen content of the harder and stronger metal, titanium. Even if the ratio of S/H for titanium is used in Eq. 1, the ratio has been shown to be independent of oxy-gen or nitrogen content.' If a more rigorous equa-tion is used combining Eq. 1 and a result given pre-viously" for the case where welding is absent, then the relation obtained is µ = a S/H + (1-a) a W aß/H where a is constant and Waß is the work of adhesion between the two metals comprising the friction couple. This relation states that if a is less than 1/2 or so, variation in the work of adhesion Waß between copper and the titanium should affect the friction coefficient markedly. It is reasonable to expect that the work of adhesion will depend on the oxygen or nitrogen content of the titanium. The metalliferous areas of Manitoba have been described in more or less detail. Since the descriptions were written some new prospects have come to light and considerable mining development has taken place in two or three localities. No attempt will be made in this paper to give an account of recent activities or to describe the several areas in detail. In a general way, geological conditions are similar in all metalliferous areas of the province, a similarity that invites a discussion of the prospects as a whole, the features that are common to all deposits and the reasons for their uniformity. Modern theories of metallogenesis have a direct bearing on such a discussion and an effort will be made to show their application.

O uso de inibidores verdes na corrosão do aço carbono SAE J403 1020 configura-se como uma alternativa econômica e ambientalmente acessível, pois, em relação aos inibidores comerciais geralmente utilizados, são de fácil obtenção, já que são adquiridos a partir de vegetais, portanto, não oferecem risco ao meio ambiente. Assim, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar o uso das folhas de aroeira como inibidor de corrosão para o aço carbono SAE J403 1020, o qual é bastante utilizado na indústria e possui baixa resistência à corrosão. A escolha da aroeira se deu devido ao fato de a planta ter origem no Brasil e abundância no Nordeste do País, principalmente no Ceará. Para análise, foram utilizados como meio corrosivo: H2SO4 0,1 M, NaCl 3,5% e NaCl (ph = 4,0); as concentrações do inibidor foram: 50, 200, 500 e 1000 ppm. Em relação aos ensaios eletroquímicos, utilizou-se: Potencial de Circuito Aberto (OCP), Espectroscopia de Impedância Eletroquímica (EIE) e Curvas de Polarização Linear (CP). Dessa forma, por meio da análise das técnicas mencionadas, conseguiu-se obter o comportamento do inibidor em relação ao material e ao meio, bem como avaliar qual o melhor meio para a utilização da aroeira como inibidor verde de corrosão.

OCCURRENCES of salt in Alberta have been mentioned and described by the writer in 1929 (l) and by Cole in 1930 (2). Brine springs occur at a number of places along the valley of Athabaska river north of latitude 56 degrees, and also on the south margin of Salt prairie, twenty-five miles west of Fitzgerald in the vicinity of the 60th parallel of latitude, which is the boundary between Alberta and the Northwest Territories. These salt springs were visited by Sir James Richardson in 1820, and in the same year D. W. Harmon stated that " ... clown Salt river there are several places where almost any quantity of excellent dean white salt may be taken with as much ease as sand along the seashore" (3). One hundred years later, in 1920, when the writer first visited these springs, the "dean white salt" which had accumulated about the springs was about 400 tons ( 4). This paper deals with a thick deposit of rock-salt which has been proved by drilling in the vicinity of McMurray. Particular attention will be given to a well drilled at Waterways early in 1936 by Industrial Minerals, Limited, when a continuous bed of rock-salt was penetrated with a thickness of 199 feet. As this paper is being presented, a salt plant is being completed and a production well is being drilled at the plant. < is salt deposit is in the vicinity of McMurray, close to the junction of the Clearwater and Athabaska rivets, in township 89, range 9, west of the 4th meridian. McMurray is about 240 miles northeast from Edmonton. As shown on Figure 1, Clearwater river, which rises at Methy portage, in Saskatchewan, enters Athabaska river at McMurray. Some three miles above the mouth of Clearwater river, the Hangingstone enters from the southwest. Waterways, where the latest salt development has taken place, is situated at the end of the Northern Alberta railway, a distance of 304 miles from Edmonton. This railway reaches the bottom of the Clearwater valley at Draper station, about 3 miles east of Waterways and near the mouth of Deep creek. The Draper bituminous sand plant is approximately half a mile east of Draper station. About one mile south of the townsite of McMurray, Horse river enters the Athabaska from the east.

Controls on environmental loading from acid rock drainage (ARD) are not well understood in waste rock material. In particular, relationships between subsurface flow and the timing, duration, and intensity of leaching of metals and acidity from waste rock dumps remain ill defined. This study investigates field-scale relationships between subsurface flow processes and geochemical processes in unsaturated waste rock. A 12-metre tall, unsaturated waste rock pile, constructed in 1994, was deconstructed and sampled at Key Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada, during the summer of 2000. A detailed sampling methodology was developed to characterise physical and chemical properties of waste rock material within the waste rock pile. Physical properties were characterised by measuring soil-water suction, volumetric water content, and grain-size distribution at 60 random locations within the pile and grain-size distribution at 20 grid locations within the pile. Attempts to develop a field-based soil water characteristic curve from physical field-data failed due to spatial variability and hysteresis of waste rock properties. As a result, grain-size distribution was used as a relative measure of subsurface flow. Paste pH, pore-water geochemistry, mineralogy, and water-soluble extraction results were used to characterise geochemical processes and sulfide oxidation at each of the 20 grid locations. Geochemical characterisation results demonstrated the preferential weathering of marcasite relative to pyrite and chalcopyrite. Dolomite was the main buffering carbonate mineral. Gyspum, jarosite and iron oxyhydroxides were the main secondary minerals. Pore-waters contained up to 800, 11.7, and 6 mMolar (78 000, 690, 1400 mg/L, respectively) of sulfate, nickel, and uranium, respectively, suggesting significant weathering has occurred. Measures of weathering indicators show no discernable correlation with grain-size distribution nor do they show any spatial relationship within the sampled grid. Reasons for this may include limited duration of waste rock exposure to weathering and development of fluid flow-paths, and limitations of characterisation methods used. Indeed, six years may not be long enough for weathering patterns to develop due to fluid flow-paths in this unsaturated waste rock pile.

The objective of this work was to understand the mechanisms of action of additives, such as thiourea, that enhance gold leaching in thiosulfate solution. The leaching reaction and surface passivation were investigated using linear sweep voltammetry. Leaching currents were determined using analysis of current-potential curves and the mixed potential theory. The gold-electrolyte interface was further characterized with surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy. The results show how thiourea prevents formation of oxysulfur compounds, which passivate the gold surface. Other molecules such as 3- m ercaptopropionic acid and L-cysteine were also studied as possible additives to prevent passive layer formation.

For gold recovery, a Chinese refractory, high-sulfur gold concentrate was subjected to biooxidation with high pulp density in a single stirred-tank reactor. The flotation concentrate contained 36.9 percent sulfur (S) and 33.9 percent iron (Fe). Different experimental regimes for biooxidation were applied. With a mixed culture and by controlling the amount of addition of the gold ores and the pH of the biooxidation system, maximum iron oxidation of 82.6 percent and sulfur oxidation of 79.3 percent were achieved. The experimental results indicate that the pH control was beneficial to the biooxidation of this concentrate. Approximately 28.4 percent of elemental sulfur (S8) was found in the oxidizing slags. Two dissolution mechanisms of elemental sulfur are proposed: (1) FeS2 → S80 → S2O32− → SO42− and (2) FeS2 → S80 → SO42−. The high pH had a positive effect on the reduction of the S8. The results of thermodynamic analysis indicate that as an oxidant the dissolved oxygen can effectively reduce the Gibbs free energy of the pyrite oxidation process and, compared with the reaction of ferric iron as the single oxidant, the oxidation of pyrite is easier. The efficiency of the gold recovery was related to the iron oxidation as well as the sulfur oxidation. Gold and silver recoveries of 92.4 percent and 66.4 percent, respectively, were achieved.

The leach liquor is filtered to remove sulfur and gangue, then cooled in a crystallizer to precipitate lead chloride The slurry from the crystallizer is subjected to electrolysis to deposit lead chloride on the cathode plate. Metastable Ag-Cu solid solutions at two compositions beyond the maximum limits of solubility obtainable by quenching from the solid state were obtained by rapid quenching from the liquid state. The process of transformation of the metastable solid solutions into the equilibrium phases was studied by means of X-ray diffraction intensity measurements and electrical-resistance measurements; metallographic examination was also performed. Results are compared with those for an alloy quenched from the solid state at a composition which exists as a solid solution at elevated temperatures. Activation energies for the trans-formation were computed to be 33,600 * 2500 and 33,100 * 2000 cal per g mole for the 60.1 and 75.0 at. pct Ag;Cu compositions, respectively THE kinetics of precipitation in supersaturated solid solutions obtained by quenching from high temperature has been thoroughly studied in many alloys, and detailed investigations of the early stages of nucleation and subsequent growth of the equilibrium phases have been carried out. All of these studies have been made on alloys quenched from the solid state, however, and it is the purpose of this paper to present some of the results on the kinetics of transformation of metastable solid solutions in Ag-Cu binary alloys whose compositions lie outside of the solid-state limits of solubility. Limits of solubility in the solid state can be increased by rapid quenching from the liquid state. This was first demonstrated by Falkenhagen and Hofmann, who obtained appreciable increases in solubility limits of the elements of the first transition series in aluminum by rapid cooling of liquid alloys through contact with a copper mold maintained at liquid nitrogen temperature.&apos; The same basic idea of cooling a liquid alloy by conduction onto a substrate rather than by convection of a gas or liquid (conventional quenching) has been recently revived and extended to very high rates of cooling by Duwez and his collaborators. The new technique was first applied to Ag-Cu alloys because the existence of a eutectic in this system is not predicted by the Hume-Rothery rules of alloy phase formation. Rapid quenching from the liquid state resulted in metastable solid solutions at all concentrations. The kinetics of decomposition of these metastable solid solutions containing 60.1 at. pct Ag;Cu (eutectic composition) and 75.0 at. pct Ag;Cu is the subject of the present paper. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Alloys were made in 10- to 20-g heats using silver of purity 99.99 pet and copper of purity >99.999 pct. Components were weighed accurately to 0.1 mg and melted by induction heating in an alumina crucible under an atmosphere of hydrogen. Weight losses amounted to less than 0.02 ~ct in all cases. Rapid cooling from the liquid state was achieved in an apparatus of the type described by Pietrokowsky. 3 In this technique a freely falling drop of molten alloy is caught between a stationary anvil and a fast moving piston, both anvil and piston being lined with copper. The resulting foils were approximately circular (about 2 cm in diam) and from about 50 to 150 u in thickness, depending on the pressure driving the piston. Metallographic samples were prepared for polishing by edge-mounting foils in Quickmount. The mostef-fective etching procedure was found to be: 10 parts NH4OH (concentrated), 1 part H2O2 (30 pct), 5 parts H2O, swab for 5 to 10 sec. The transformation of the metastable alloys to equilibrium was followed by X-ray diffraction and electrical-resistivity measurements. The peak intensity and the integrated intensity of suitable Bragg reflections of the metastable and stable solid solutions were studied with a Norelco dif-fractometer, using nickel-filtered copper KO radiation. The peaks were step-scanned at intervals of 0.05 deg. Using either a Kelvin bridge or a null circuit with a Leeds and Northrup K-2 potentiometer, the changes in electrical resistance due to phase transformation were measured for specimens cut into strips about 20 mm long and 4 mm wide. All resistivity measurements were carried out at liquid-nitrogen temperature. The isothermal heat treatment was accomplished by sealing the samples in argon-filled aluminum containers with stainless-steel O-rings. Copper refining electrolytes are maintained in the range 60-65¦C to ensure an efficient operation. The heat energy required to meet these temperatures has been traditionally derived from the electrical energy required for the electrolytic process and supplementary steam energy. In 1983, experiments were conducted at Copper Refineries Pty. Ltd. (CRL) to determine the effects of insulating the Tank House cells, and fully covering the cells. The results of these experiments showed conclusively that greatly reduced steam consumption would be required to maintain electrolyte temperatures. These positive results led to an Energy Conservation Programme for the Tank House, and this was implemented in 1984. A computerised cell cover monitoring system was developed, and is used to control cell coverage and fluid balance. The experimental work and the benefits obtained since implementation of the programme are discussed.

We have developed a classification of geochemical barriers according to their origin, i.e. natural and artificial, and according to methods and areas of application. There has been an examination of the interaction between different classes of geochemical barriers with sulfate solutions containing nickel, copper and iron. As natural barriers, carbonates (calcite and dolomites) were used. For artificial barriers, a mixture of serpentine and carbonatite, thermo-activated copper-nickel dressing tailings, and a magnesium-containing sorbent based on brucite was used. "It has been clarified that the Al-5%Mg alloys containing 200 mass ppm of sodium showed grain boundary (GB) fracture, even when tested at room temperature, as well as at high temperatures (~500°C). SEM/EDX study revealed that the GB fracture was associated with the segregation of sodium on grain boundaries of the Al-Mg base alloys. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed that the GB fracture at room temperature of Al-Mg alloys was caused by sodium segregation in the solid state. It was also shown that the tendency of the GB fracture strongly depended on the heat treatment; the alloys after the solution heat treatment showed severe GB fracture compared with the alloys after the homogenizing treatment. Moreover, it was shown that the GB fracture at room temperature by sodium segregation was suppressed by the addition of bismuth or indium. The suppression of the GB fracture by the additional elements was believed to be the scavenging effects by forming the sodium bearing compounds in grains.INTRODUCTIONIt is widely known that Al-Mg base alloys containing high amount of magnesium(~5 mass%)show better workability at room temperature, while that the alloys show grain boundary (GB) embrittlement at higher temperatures ranging from 200 to 500°C, depending on grain size(Otsuka, 1984), sodium impurity level(Ransley, 1959, Okada, 1997, Horikawa, 2001)and testing strain rate(Yamada, 2012). In the case of coarse-grained Al-5%Mg alloys (~300 ?m), 2 mass ppm of sodium causes severe GB fracture around 300°C, however, the Al-5%Mg-2ppm alloy does not show GB fracture at room temperature. It has also been shown that the GB embrittlement caused by 2ppm of sodium was suppressed by the additional elements, such as bismuth (Talbot, 1995), antimony (Ueda, 1997) and indium (Horikawa, 2012). Basedon these facts, we have concluded that the GB embrittlement at higher temperatures of Al-Mg alloys is attributed to the synergy effects of GB segregation of atomic sodium and GB sliding. For the GB embrittlement mechanism of Al-Mg alloys, involvement of low melting point metallic phases has been pointed out (Lynch, 2002),since the GB embrittlement appeared only at high temperatures. Up to date, the effects of high amount of sodium addition more than 2 ppm on GB fracture were not fully investigated in Al-Mg alloys. In the present study, the effect of 100 ppm ordered sodium impurity on GB fracture of Al-5%Mg alloys was examined, together with the effect of another additional elements."

This report establishes a methodology for the evaluation of gas detection devices and is the result of a critical investigation into the basic principles defining gas detector performance. A scheme is presented to evaluate the performance of a test sample of gas detectors based on the detector type and intended application. Test procedures, worksheets, test apparatus, glossary and statistical methods for handling test data arc given. In addition, evaluation standards and test parameters are identified. It is intended that this report serve as a comprehensive framework for the eventual certification of all gas detectors for mine applications. "Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating the unique pillar stability issues associated with room-and-pillar mining in dipping underground stone mines. The objective of this paper is to study the post-blast impact in and around a pillar, using microseismic monitoring. To accomplish this, a microseismic monitoring system has been installed at a dipping underground stone mine in central Pennsylvania. The microseismic system is comprised of 18 uniaxial accelerometers; 12 sensors are installed in a single pillar and 6 sensors are installed in the surrounding area. More than 4,400 microseismic events have been located near the study pillar following the blasts. The number of triggers increased significantly following the blast, and the trigger rate in the first five minutes was 60 triggers per minute and three triggers per minute over the next three hours. The processing of high-quality triggers indicated a large number of low magnitude microseismic events near the blasting face. The event locations were identified more accurately by using a 3D-velocity model, with an average 9 m expected location accuracy for this array calculated using the system data. Seismicity was absent from the core of the pillar, but significant numbers of events were found following cutter roof along a crosscut as it was developed as well as in the location of a rib failure event. Additionally, the events were located in the roof, showing high number of microseismic events within 0–10 m of the roof line compared to 10–30 m above the roof line.INTRODUCTIONGround control stability is essential to any mining operation for ensuring mineworker safety and health and preventing catastrophic failures of underground structures. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research in stone pillar design and has established fundamental pillar design guidelines for the underground stone industry, which resulted in the development of the S-Pillar program (Esterhuizen et al., 2011; Esterhuizen and Murphy, 2018). However, the data that makes up the S-Pillar database consists of shallow depth, flat-lying, single-level mining operations. Therefore, to expand this dataset and to develop guidelines for challenging conditions such as dipping and multi-level mines, NIOSH is currently conducting detailed pillar response investigations at mines with these characteristics. The study is being conducted using multiple research approaches, including seismic modeling and tomography, numerical modeling (Sears et al., 2019), stress monitoring, and LiDAR-based laser scanning (Slaker, Murphy, and Winfield, 2019). This paper discusses the findings from the microseismic monitoring system installed at the Pleasant Gap Mine, a steeply dipping underground limestone mine in central Pennsylvania."

Work is vepurted which was aimed at accentuating the pec14liar attributes of the GaAs laser diode, namely its sutzull size and its high efficiency. This has been done by reducing- transport losses in the bulk p and n regions of the diode and combining many of. these diodes into series stacks with common optical cazlities. The result of this effort is a nearly monochromati source at about 8450A With a luminous areu 0.05 by The GaAs laser diode is an attractive pulsed light source in the near ir because of its ability to emit very large pulse powers and its small size. In addition to this, the device is efficient; and the higher the 0.05 cm emitting peak pulse po we rs at greater than 300 LC at repetition rates below 200 pps into a cone about 0.01 steradians when operated at 77°K. The results of nzeasuvetnents of peak optical power and spectra frorr~ these stacks are reported and some conclusions are drawn about the vole the individual diodes play in the stacked operation. peak output power, the more efficient it is.
