Aspects of the formation, decomposition and acid solubility of zinc ferrite were examined to find potential ways of increasing the recovery of zinc from a calcination process of mineral concentrates. Ferrite can begin to form within 2 hours at 450¦C. while complete reaction can occur after 35 minutes at 700¦C. The nature of the starting materials has a pronounced effect on the rate of formation and below 700¦C. ZnSO4 and Fe2O3 proved to be the least reactive of the materials investigated. It is possible that iron in a mineral admixed h sphalerite can be converted to a relatively inactive form, however, it does not seem possible to prevent zince f formation when iron is in the sphalerite lattice. At the two temperatures examined, 650¦C. and 700¦C, the presence of SO2 in the atmosphere accelerate .e formation of ferrite. Prolonged exposure to such atmospheres, however, caused the ferrite to decompose to ZnSO4 and Fe203. The optimum temperature for decomposition was 650¦C. and it was virtually complete within 2 hours in an atmosphere of 10% SO2 in air. Zinc ferrite was also decomposed by CO at low concentrations, and by heating with limestone at 1000¦C. for at least 2 hours. The solubility of zinc ferrite in acid was influenced by the starting materials used. As both the reaction temperature and the time at temperature increased the acid solubility decreased. In wedge-shaped bicrystals of zone-refined aluminum it is observed that (111) pure tilt boundaries migrate under the driving force of their own inter-facial free energy. The boundary velocity is a power function of the driving force. The driving force exponent decreases with decreasing angle of misorien-tation. For example, at 64O°C, the exponent decreased from 4.0 for a 40 deg to 3.2 for a 16 deg tilt boundary. An evaluation of the driving force acting on the boundaries during their motion indicates that for low driv-forces, up to about 2 x l03 ergs per cu cm, the velocity is relatively independent of misorientation, whereas at higher driving forces a 40 deg tilt boundary exhibits the highest velocity. The measured activation energy for boundary migration approaches that for bulk self-diffusion at low driving forces, decreasing from 33 to 27 kcal per mole as the driving force is increased from 1 x l0 to 5 x l03 ergs per cu cm. These results are compared with current theories of grain-boundary migration. In previous experimental studies of grain boundary migration the driving force has been limited to a difference in stored energy across the boundary. This stored energy has been introduced into the crystal either by prior deformation1-3 or by grown-in lineage structure. A part of the energy stored in the deformed crystal is released by recovery either prior to or concurrently with grain boundary migration, thus introducing an uncertainty as to the magnitude of the driving force responsible for grain boundary migration. The grown-in lineage structure, though thermally stable during annealing, neither provides conditions under which different levels of energy may be stored in the imperfect crystal nor provides a control of orientation difference across the migrating boundary of a growing grain. Furthermore, because of variation in the lineage structure, it is difficult to determine accurately the energy stored in the imperfect crystal. Several investigations of grain boundary migration during normal grain growth have also suffered from difficulties in estimating the driving force because of uncertainties in the principal radii of curvature.~ In the present investigation the velocity of pure tilt boundaries in zone-refined aluminum bicrystals of selected orientation (40, 30, and 16 deg around the [Ill] tilt axis) has been measured in the absence of a dislocation density difference across the moving boundary, thus eliminating the previous experimental difficulties. The driving force for boundary migration is derived from a gradient of the total interfacial free energy of the migrating boundary in wedge-shaped bicrystals. A similar method was attempted by Bron and Machlin in a study of grain boundary migration in silver. However, they found that one of the crystals was deformed and consequently the motion of the boundary was partly due to a difference of stored energy across the boundary. The observed behavior of boundary velocities as affected by the driving force is examined in the light of the predictions of the current theories of grain boundary migration.7"10 The effect of boundary misorientation on velocity is compared with the theory of " which is based on a dislocation core model for high-angle boundaries. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Seed-oriented bicrystals of zone-refined aluminum, 2.5 cm wide, 0.5 cm thick, and 12 cm long, containing tilt boundaries with a common (111) axis, were grown from the melt in the direction of this axis. Spectro-graphic analysis, reported earlier,'' indicated the purity of the crystals to be 99.999+pct. Three such bicrystals containing 16, 30, and 40 deg tilt boundaries were used. Wedge-shaped specimens were prepared from these bicrystals by spark cutting followed by electrolytic polishing. The angle of the wedge was usually 40 deg and the specimens were usually 0.25 cm thick. The intercrystalline boundary was located within 0.2 to 0.5 cm from the tip of the wedge. Fig. 1 shows a section of an oriented bicrystal containing an outline of a wedge-shaped specimen. The crystallographic directions shown in Fig. 1 represent the orientation of one of the crystals (the larger section of the bicrys-tal); the orientation of the other crystal differs only by rotation around the common [lil] axis. The parallel faces of the wedge always corresponded to the common (171) planes in both crystals, whereas the orientation of the side faces varied, depending on the misorientation angle. In late 1965 General Mills announced the availability of a new liquid ion exchange reagent, LIX®-64, for the recovery of copper from various solutions, such as dump leach liquors. Acceptance of this material by the copper industry has been gratifying. A number of pilot plants have been operated, and at this writing there are four commercial plants either in operation or under construction. The properties and operating characteristics of this reagent have been described in previous papers.1,2 LIX-64 is quite effective and selective for copper extractions although partially limited in pH ranges, losing extraction efficiency as the acidity of the feed solution increases to below pH 1.0. Also, the LIX-64 content in the kerosine carrier was limited to about 10 volume percent (except for special cases) because of rapidly decreasing phase disengagement rates above this content. This in turn led to large plant capital costs, as the organic flow rates had to be in- creased (rather than LIX-64 content) to extract the copper from high content liquors. This was true in all circuits where the feed copper content ran above 2.0 g/l copper. A reagent was needed which would extract copper from more acidic liquors (or higher copper content liquors) and which exhibited improved phase disengagement characteristics with reagent contents up to 30 volume percent. General Mills is pleased to announce the availability in commercial quantities of a new and improved reagent, L+-64~. This reagent broadens the pH range in which copper can be extracted, and exhibits superior phase disengagement characteristics. The improvement in the reagent has been noted in laboratory circuits, as well as pilot plant runs and commercial operations.

Even though wet processes were used in coal preparation plants prior to 1941, dewatering coal was not a problem then because the finer sizes were uneconomical to recover and were considered waste. However, during the war years the scarcity of raw materials necessitated the utilization of every pound of natural resources and coal plants began seeking an economical mans of recovering fine coal. Early efforts to this end concentrated primarily on centrifugal dewatering devices. Such equipment produced good results but was relatively expensive. In 1944, a method was devised utilizing a vibrating screen fitted with a profile wire deck rather than the standard woven wire cloth deck. This machine came to be referred to as a dewaterizer. Results obtained with the dewaterizer approached those of the centrifugal equipment, but at a lower capital cost, Their use reduced either the number of centrifugal units required to follow the dewaterizers or the required energy input to heat dryers, In some cases they eliminated the need for any further dewatering equipment.

Many computer programs have been written which are capable of performing a least squares fit, both linear and nonlinear, to data gathered by the petroleum researcher. However, when the petroleum engineer tries to program methods of analysis he has used manually in the past, such as forecasting production by decline-curve analysis, more than a knowledge of the use of existing least squares programs becomes necessary. It is the intent of the authors to report the techniques used in the development of such a decline-curve program.

The solubility of nitrogen in vanadium is determined from 275" to 575°C by measuring the height of the nitrogen internal friction peak of equilibrated V-N alloys. The proportionality constant at 275°C between the internal friction peak height (Q- 1) and the atom percent nitrogen in solution is found to be 0.095 per at. pct for nitrogen concentrations up to 0.8 at. pct. The heat of solution of the nitride in vanadium is 5500 cal per mole. The solubility of nitrogen in the Group V metals is discussed. LITTLE work has been performed on the vanadium-nitrogen terminal solid solution. Hahn1 found the solubility for nitrogen to be very small and reported the existence of a hexagonal phase of composition near that of V2N at the solubility limit. Rostoker and Yamarnoto2 reported the solubility to be at least 3.5 at. pct at the melting point and to be less than this value at 900°C. In addition, they reported from X-ray diffraction studies that nitrogen in solution produces tetragonality in the vanadium lattice. An X-ray study by Schonberg3 has confirmed the results of Hahn but indicated that the tetragonality observed by Rostoker and Yamamoto was due to the presence of oxygen in their specimens. Beatty4 has performed lattice parameter and hardness measurements on terminal solid solutions and found the upper limit of the solubility to be at least 0.66 at. pct N. No measurements have been made of the pressure-temperature-composition relationships (P-T-X) for the terminal solid solution. As a part of a research program on gas-metal equilibrium, an attempt was made to study the P-T-X relationships in the V-N system using both the internal friction and the gas equilibration methods which have been successful with the Nb(Cb)-N and Ta-N systems (see Ref. 5 for a review of this work). Extensive investigation, using the gas equilibration methods, showed this method not to be applicable with vanadium This was presumably due to the gettering action of vanadium sublimed on the walls of the Sieverts apparatus. Thus, the nitrogen pressure relationships with temperature and composition were not obtained. The internal friction methods were, however, found to be applicable, and the temperature-composition relationships are reported in this paper and compared with similar results for the Nb-N6 and Ta-N7 systems. The existence of a Snoek internal friction peak due to nitrogen in solution in vanadium has been clearly demonstrated. 8-10 Powers and Doyle found the peak to be at approximately 275°C for frequencies near 1 cps.8 In a subsequent paper10 they reported the proportionality constant at 275°C between the internal friction peak height (Q-1) and the concentration of ni- trogen in solution (in atom percent) as 0.06 per at. pct. The studies of Stanley and wert9 indicated qualitatively that the height of the Snoek peak decreased with aging at the peak temperature and thus suggested that internal friction methods were suitable for study of the solubility. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The vanadium for this investigation was of particularly high purity. It was obtained from the Ames Laboratory of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, Ames, Iowa in the form of a 1/2-in. diam, three pass zone-refined ingot. The electrical resistivity ratio (p300ºk/p4ºk) was 160. The initial composition was determined as follows: Carbon 200 ppm Oxygen 150 ppm Chromium <50 pprn Iron 125 ppm Silicon <50 ppm Other metallic 100 pprn The initial vanadium ingot was fabricated to 30-mil wire by swaging and wire drawing without the need of intermediate annealing. Lengths of this wire were then further purified (particularly for oxygen) by outgassing at 10-6 torr at 1400°C for 4 hr. The outgassing treatment resulted in specimens with a bamboo grain structure and a lustrous appearance. Desired amounts of nitrogen were added to the outgassed wires in a Sieverts apparatus in which known amounts of nitrogen were equilibrated with the wire at 1300°C. Nitrogen concentrations were produced in the desired range from less than 1 to 10 at. pct N. Monitoring of the partial pressure of nitrogen in the Sieverts apparatus indicated that at 1300°C equilibrium between the nitrogen gas and the vanadium was obtained within 10 min. Relatively rapid cooling from the nitrogen addition temperature was obtained simply by turning off the specimen heating current and cooling to room temperature in the partial pressure of nitrogen. Internal friction measurements of wire specimens were made under forepump vacuum in a torsional pendulum at frequencies near 1 cps. The torsional pendulum was of low thermal inertia and was designed so that specimens could be heated both by a conventional tube furnace and by the joule heating of a separate current through the wire specimen." Use of a static atmosphere of helium gas as a quenching medium made it possible to cut the specimen current, rapidly cool the specimen to the measurement temperature, and make a measurement of the internal friction in less than 1 min. Because of the large solubility of vanadium for nitrogen, the internal friction peak heights were in some cases greater than Q-1 = 0.1. These have ranged from mere recognition, to cautious acceptance, to confident utilization, and in some instances, to substantial investment in computer hardware and software."

Cost control is a lot like motherhood - everyone proclaims its need and its worthiness, but is it really appreciated and used to successfully complete a project on time and within budget? Good Cost Control is a yardstick - requiring fixed definition but this does not mean rigidity for the project. It provides the means for telling: 1. Where you are going 2. When you will complete and 3. What it will finally cost. Cost Control does not fix the price of dreams nor the cost of projects loosely defined. It does not control costs in itself but provides the tools whereby engineering decisions can be made which will ultimately affect the project cost It does not even guarantee that a project will be completed within the original funds - but only, if this reflects management desires.

In its effort to combat waterlogging and soil salinity, the Water and Soils Investigation Division of WAPDA (West Pakistan&apos;s Water and Power Development Authority) has carried out an extensive program of test drilling andwater sampling since 1954. Data collected during the past ten years have permitted the delineation of fresh and saline groundwater zones in the Punjab Plain. Fresh groundwater containing generally less than 500 ppm of total dissolved solids is found in wide belts paralleling the major rivers and in other areas of fresh-water recharge. Locally, fresh groundwater extends to depths of 1500 ft and more. Saline groundwater occurs down gradient from sources of recharge, particularly in the lower central parts of the interfluvial areas, and presumably underlies most of the Punjab Plain. The groundwaters of the Punjab are characterized by their evolution from calcium, magnesium bicarbonate waters near sources of recharge to waters containing a dominant proportion of sodium. The highly mineralized waters of the Punjab are generally of the sodium chloride type, whereas in the Dera Ismail Khan District, sodium sulfate waters predominate. The pattern of distribution of saline groundwater zones and the observed gradual increase in mineral content, down gradient from sources of recharge, can be explained best by a hypothesis stressing the process of evaporation from the water table and solution of minerals within the alluvial aquifer. In 1954, detailed groundwater surveys in the Punjab Plain were initiated by WASID, the Water and Soils Investigation Division of West Pakistan&apos;s Water and Power Development Authority. The investigations, undertaken under a cooperative agreement between the governments of Pakistan and the United States, were aimed at the formulation of reclamation measures to improve waterlogged and saline soils, and to assess the groundwater potential of the Punjab and other areas of West Pakistan. The nature and urgency of WASID&apos;s primary task limited the exploration of the alluvial aquifer generally to its uppermost part. About 1030 test holes drilled in 47,000 sq miles of the Punjab defined the nature of the alluvium to depths of about 600 ft and yielded data on water quality to 400 or 500 ft. A report on the hydrology of the Punjab, based on the results of these investigations was published by WASID in 1963.&apos; The present report incorporates data obtained by WASID since 1962 in a program of deep test drilling in the Punjab and the adjacent areas of Bahawalpur and Dera Ismail Khan District, permitting the definition of fresh and saline groundwater zones to depths of 1500 ft in some areas. Groundwater in the Punjab Plain is contained in alluvial deposits, predominantly sand and silt, which extend almost everywhere to depths of 1000 ft and more. The alluvium has been deposited by the Indus River and its tributaries since late Tertiary time and is contiguous with similar deposits in India. The Indo-Gangetic Plain extends from the foothills of the Himalayas to the ancient rocks of the Peninsular Shield in central India and to the ocean. Gradients are generally very low and range from about 1% ft per mile in the upper part of the plain to less than 1 ft per mile in the south and southwest. The monotony of the alluvial plain is broken by scattered bedrock outcrops in two of the interfluvial areas, Chaj Doab and Rechna Doab. The bedrock hills are projections of the northwest-trending Delhi-Shahpur Ridge that is largely buried by alluvium. The rocks of the buried ridge, presumably of Precambrian age, are essentially impermeable and define the lower limit of the alluvial aquifer in parts of Chaj, Rechna, and Bari doabs. Elsewhere in the Punjab, there are no outcrops of other consolidated rocks and their presence below the alluvium is conjectural. The principal areas of bedrock outcrops, near Kirana and Sangla, are shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1. The movement of groundwater through the alluvial aquifer of the Punjab has been described by Green-man and others.&apos; In most of the area, the pre-irriga-tion water table sloped from the rivers downstream and toward the central axes of the doabs, indicating that the rivers were sources of groundwater recharge. Advanced transportation systems for the mining industry can be defined as those which lend themselves to automation and meet definite performance and cost objectives. The term automation shall mean that control of transportation system is accomplished by a closed loop electronic circuit which, when started on command, will continue to cycle as programmed until such time as an intelligent feed-back causes the system to shut down.

An orientation survey was conducted over a known disseminated copper deposit and a Au-Cu vein deposit and employed geological, geophysical, and geochemical methods. Geochemical techniques proved the most effective and economical means of locating and defining areas underlain by these types of mineralization. Six additional, widely separated occurrences were also investigated and mineralization was confirmed by determination of cold-extractable copper in stream sediments. The length of anomalous drainage varies from several to 16 km and depends on the type and tenor of mineralization. Despite generally marked relief and extreme physical and chemical weathering, cold-extractable copper anomalies in soils appear to reflect closely variations in the ore mineral content of immediately underlying rocks. Threshold values vary with local geological conditions and type and grade of mineralization. Significant thresholds in stream sediments are about 65 ppm and 10 ppm for cold-extractable copper in disseminated and vein copper occurrences respectively. Similar differences are encountered in soils. This necessitates the use of a scale of threshold values at progressive stages in each exploration program. Dis-seminated copper occurrences are presently the major source of mineral production m the Philippines. Much potentially productive ground remains to be investigated and applied geochemistry appears to offer the best available approach. The Institute of Applied Geology (I.A.G.), a joint project sponsored by the University of the Philippines, the Philippine Bureau of Mines and the United Nations Development Program (Special Fund) undertook during 1965-66 a number of field projects in Northern Luzon Island (Fig. 1). These field operations were of a two-fold nature and involved both orientation and exploration. During approximately six weeks, an orientation survey, involving geological mapping, geophysical surveying and geochemical prospecting, was conducted over a partly developed, disseminated copper deposit at Santo Nino (Fig. 1). This study demonstrated the economic and technical feasibility of geochemical ptospecting, relative to the other methods tested, for the location and delineation of a typical disseminated copper occurrence characteristic of those that represent the major source of metal in the Philippines.&apos; Geochemical techniques, similar to those tested at Santo Nino, were then applied in a second orientation study of a vein occurrence at Suyoc (Fig. 1). The results of these two orientation studies suggest that, in reconnaissance work in this region, stream sediment analyses, combined with the determination of pH in the same streams, can be used to indicate areas underlain by rock containing anomalous concentrations of copper, whether it occurs in the large tonnage, low grade, disseminated deposits or in the comparatively small tonnage, higher grade, gold vein occurrences. Furthermore, the orientation surveys demonstrate that soil sampling and analysis serve effectively to outline more closely the mineralized zones within the generally anomalous areas identified from the stream reconnaissance. About 17% of the world&apos;s present day oil supplies comes from wells drilled in the continental shelf of some 28 countries. The demand for oil is increasing each year and is expected to quintuple in the next decade. In the same period, the demand for gas will climb to at least 20 times its present rate. In the next decade, the percentage of oil and gas obtained from offshore is expected to rise to nearly half the world&apos;s consumption. The offshore oil industry is currently striving to achieve new technological advances in the field of deep ocean operations, especially in face of adverse seas. While the emphasis was put on drilling vessels for exploration, the industry was slow in developing effective offshore construction vessels. Until a year ago, construction vessels were but large barges with construction equipment mounted on their decks. These vessels all shared the same severe limitation: When the sea exceeds a five-foot wave height (and in some cases as little as three feet) the conventional construction barge is forced to suspend operations. In face of an oncoming storm they must run for shelter. Their utilization, therefore, is limited and in rough weather areas, such as the North Sea or the Bass Strait is lower than 50%.

The phrase "Total-Energy" has, during the past few years, become widely used to describe a wide range of very different operations. However, if accurately described they all have one basic factor in common - energy usage is optimised with the prime mover being powered by gas or oil to generate shaft horsepower and the products of combustion being put to some use. The item which distinguishes a Total Energy system from any other engine or turbine driven project is that orate pains are taken to utilize the waste heat, whether this be in the form of exhaust gases and/or engine jacket ling water. n areas where grid supplies of electricity are readily available, the economics of most projects undoubtedly hinge upon the successful application of waste heat. However, there has been a growing awareness of other benefits, such as reliability of supply, which can be incorporated into the system. In particular these factors sway managements of hospitals and companies with complex computer facilities to examine closely the feasibility of Total Energy, Consequently, in America for example, where many systems have proved themselves the list of applications is wide - shopping centres, apartment blocks, office buildings, airline terminals, universities, schools, motels. And these do not cover the industrial sectors where the range is wider. The total number in North America is now approximately 500 and this to some extent-speaks for itself. In Australia, the real work involved in carrying out feasibility studies for Total Energy is only just beginning. &apos;in some quarters, the concept is not well received in that it is too new. Therefore, a typical approach is to play safe and wait until some other company has proved its operation "under Australian conditions". This is certainly a realistic approach when considering something revolutionary but as far as Total Energy.is"concerned all the individual components and sometimes combinations, (engines, generators, boilers, air-conditioning units) have been in operation for many years. The only innovation is that they are now all being brought together under one roof. This should not be forgotten when the question "where can I see something like this operating?" is asked.

Previous Bureau of Mines studies of vibrations from quarry blasts have shown that the square root of the charge-weight may be used to group particle velocity data from various charge sizes, and that empirical propagation equations may be used to estimate vibration amplitudes. Particle accelerations of the sandstone roof of the White Pine Copper mine, Michigan, were measured to determine whether similar propagation equations may be developed for underground mine blasts. Vibration data from White Pine blasts were best grouped by scaling with the square root of the charge weight. Cube root scaling did not effectively group the data. The empirical propagation equation AW1/2 = 50,000 (R/W1/2)-2.21 where A is peak-to-peak acceleration in g&apos;s, W is the zero-delay charge-weight in pounds, and R is the distance from the blast in feet, may be used to estimate maximum vibration amplitudes from production sized blasts. Vibration differences among headings and types of explosive charge (AN-FO and dynamite), while statistically significant, were not a major factor in the estimation of maximum vibration amplitudes with an empirical propagation equation. Vibration differences between types of explosive charge were larger than the differences among headings, indicating that some reduction of vibration amplitude might be gained by using AN-FO rather than dynamite. Acceleration records from both White Pine&apos;s AN-FO and dynamite production blasts show that high intensity vibrations from the delayed portions of the blast (each delay interval = 25 milliseconds) were separate events, and that the zero-delay portion of the blast produced the maximum vibration amplitudes. If the pull of the underground blast round can be maintained, a reduction of the zero-delay charge-weight may effectively reduce the maximum vibration amplitude of the blast.

"Mineral endowment in northern British Columbia and the Yukon Territory was assessed on the basis of geological opinion which was gathered in a quantitative framework of subjective probabilities. The survey area encompassed 364,000 square miles and was divided into 310 cells having dimensions of one degree of longitude by one-half degree of latitude. The response solicited related to tonnage, grade and number of deposits of a particular mineral in each cell. The questionnaire sought an expression of mineral endowment down to mine-able depth as distinct from economic expectations. Details on the questionnaire and responses are presented in a series of contour maps on individual commooities, which illustrate the collective occurrence picture of the respondents. The approach is largely dependent on the cooperation of an adequate number of geologists familiar with the region being examined. This approach to an assessment of the mineral endowment of a region has a wide range of applicability, from the focusing of exploration effort to aiding government and development bodies in the formulation of regional strategies and the planning, for example, of road, rail and power facilities."
