All gold occurrences in Tanzania are of Precambrian age and in geological settings similar to gold deposits in other parts the world. The three main areas of interest are perhaps the least prospected of areas of gold mineralization in Precambrian rocks in non- aligned, or market economy nations. Historic production exceeds 77.660 kg (2.5 million oz). Current results by small scale workers go unreported, but have been estimated to be as high as 11.000 kg (350.000 oz) annually. Gold occurs in both lower and upper Precambrian rocks. In the older. gold is associated with greenstones and iron formations typical of many cratonic areas of Precambrian age. The Tanzanian Craton lies in the north west quarter of the country where it is flanked on both east and west sides by mobile belts involving upper Precambrian rocks of high metamorphic grade. Gold occurs in fractures in the western belt within two distinct areas.

An instrumentation and numeric modeling study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the Magmont Mine in Bixby, MO. An isolated section of this room-and-pillar mine was monitored with borehole and closure extensometers during a pillar recovery program to determine stress redistribution. In situ stress measurements were taken in the rib before pillar extraction began. Sample cores from the boreholes were taken for analysis of the properties of the host rock in the laboratory. The extensometers recorded no measurable displacements during most of the operation. Two-dimensional, finite-element; three-dimensional, finite-element; and three-dimensional displace-ment discontinuity codes were used to model the area of study. The finite-element models were run with two initial stress conditions, i.e., stress due to gravity only and stress obtained by in situ measurements. Horizontal stresses in the models reduced the calculated factor-of-safety in the mine back by up to a factor of 10, but did not have a significant effect on calculated pillar stability.

"Prior or simultaneous addition of ammonium sulphate can, not only enhance the activating effect of hydrosulphide ions on xanthate flotation of malachite but it can also eliminate possible detrimental or depressing effects of excess residual hydrosulphide . Use of relatively inexpensive ammonium sulphate appears to reduce the consumption of the much more expensive sulphidizing agent for optimal flotation recovery INTRODUCTIONOxidized copper minerals float poorly with conventional thiol-type collectors. This is believed to be due to the nonadherent character of the collector coating, which is readily re- moved by particle abrasion. Rosas and Polingr reported emulsion flotation seemed capable of resisting abrasion during the flotation of non-sulphide copper ores. It appears that the most common flotation technique for oxidized copper minerals comprises sulphidization with Na .S and subsequent treatment by sulphydryl collector. The principles of this method are available . Malghan recently reviewed the studies on the role of sodium sulphide in the flotation of oxidized copper, lead and zinc minerals.It is well known that in the sulphidized flotation of malachite, the activation process depends strongly on the concentration of the sulphidizing agent, i.e., insufficient sulphide gives poor recoveries because of inadequate sulphidization; excessive sulphide also causes poor recoveries due to the depressive effect of the residual hydro-sulphide ions in solution. A major difficulty in sulphidization, especially with a varying feed nature, is to establish and maintain the optimum sulphide concentration in solution. In plant practice, vigorous control of sodium sulphide is required and stepwise addition of the reagent is recommended to improve the efficiency of the process. Soto and Laskowskim have found that malachite, depressed by an excess of sulphide ions, can restore its floatability if air or oxygen is introduced to the pulp. They attributed this to the oxidation of the HS - ions on the surface of the mineral. Jones and Woodcockuvi showed that a sulphide ion selective electrode could be used to optimize the conditions (e.g . amount of hydrosulphide, sulphidization time, flotation time) more readily and precisely than existing methods in the flotation of oxidized copper ores."

Compressed air distribution networks are essential for powering equipment in many mines even though some mines are replacing them with electrical power for hydraulic drills. Compressed air can be costly especially if the system is poorly designed and maintained. This paper outlines a technique for proper compressed air system design that will help mine managers reduce compressed air power costs; an important topic in today's highly competitive international minerals market. Compressed air system design is complex. It requires specifying: 1) air quantity and pressure in all branches of a large network, 2) proper location and types of valves and fittings, 3) the network solution that determines compressor requirements, 4) optimal hose and pipe, diameters, 5) receiver and compressor accessories, and 6) required capital and operating costs.

Working in thick coal seams presents many problems, included in these is obtaining the maximum recovery of coal under safe working conditions. In order to obtain maximum extraction it is important to understand the behaviour of pillars left for support purposes. However it is not always the practice to maintain pillar stability it is often required to design for pillar failure. The greatest hazard of pillar mining is uncontrolled pillar collapse. Many major and relatively minor collapses of pillar workings have been recorded in the history of mining. Notable among the collapses was that at Coalbrook Colliery in South Africa in 1960 (Bryan et al 1964). This led to recommendations on the design of bard and pillar workings in South Africa. (Salamon 1967) These design recommendations were based on the statistical analysis of stable and unstable pillar workings and introduced the concept of probability of pillar failure and safety factor. On the basis of this study a safety factor of 1.6 was prescribed for production panels in South Africa. A general review of pillar design procedures, reveals that a new phase of reinterpretation and modification is in progress. This takes into account for instance the effect method of working, whether by conventional drilling and blasting or continuous miner, has on coal pillar strength, and the necessity to review the methods for increasing depth of working. Also, as more is being understood about overall rock mass properties and advanced computer modelling techniques become more readily available, the mine planning engineer is faced with numerous approaches to pillar design.

INTRODUCTION The U. S. mining industry experienced a severe recession in the early 1980's. This resulted in the realization that the domestic mining industry had to compete on a global basis and only the strong or the low-cost producers would survive. The economic viability of a mining company not only depended on maximizing mineral recovery but also on its ability to do so at minimum cost. Companies had to become more productive not only by cutting costs, but also by developing and/or evaluating new technologies in existing or new plants. Several innovative concepts, including in-pit crushing and conveying, fine crushing, improved classification equipment, flotation, column flotation, pressure filtration, etc., have been developed in recent years. This paper addresses the impact of new flotation concepts and equipment on mill design. MILL DESIGN PHILOSOPHY Modern mill design, especially for large capacity plants, has its foundation in minimizing capital and operating costs. Capital costs can be minimized by minimizing the various components of the capital cost: infrastructure, equipment, instrumentation, structural, initial spare parts costs, etc. All these costs are minimized by simplifying the mill design and/or process flowsheet. The simplified process flowsheet, where applicable, consists of a single stage primary crusher followed by a semiautogeneous - ball mill grinding circuit to produce feed for a flotation circuit. Multiple flotation circuits have been eliminated in most cases. These concepts minimize the cost and encourage the use of large capacity equipment while maintaining optimum metallurgical recovery. The philosophy of mill modernization/modification is generally driven by the desire to increase the mill capacity within the limits of the existing mill building. This need is facilitated by using large size flotation equipment and eliminating multiple parallel flotation circuits in order to minimize capital and operating costs. Conventional flotation machine development has paralleled this mill design philosophy. FLOTATION CELL DESIGN Since froth flotation has been the most widely used separation process for over half a century, one would expect that it would be possible to design and select flotation machines for specific applications based on scientific principles. But this has not been the case. Best judgment, experience and personal prejudice have played a key role in equipment selection. These factors, along with the difficulty of evaluating new concepts in commercial plants, has slowed progress in implementation and commercialization of innovative ideas and/or equipment. Conventional Flotation There have been no major technological advances in conventional flotation cell design in recent years. A recent flotation cell survey indicates that 'larger flotation cells are still the order of the day.”(1) A comprehensive review of design of flotation machines indicate that they have been mechanically redesigned and are generally simpler and easier to maintain and less expensive to manufacture. (2,3) The approximate chronological development of conventional cells from the 25 cubic foot cells to the 3000 cubic foot cells, which were recently installed at the Copperton concentrator of Utah Copper, is given in Table 1. Larger flotation cells are the obvious choice for new plants or plants looking for expansion because of the following reasons: • They have lower capital cost per unit volume • Installation costs are generally lower because fewer units require less space • Maintenance costs are lower because of fewer mechanisms • Power requirements (HP/ton dry feed) are generally lower • with increased flotation cell size as illustrated in Table 2 [Table 1. As part of a Bureau of Mines research program to conserve critical and strategic metals, an aqueous electrodeposition method for preparing stainless-steel-type coatings was studied. Chromium powder (averaging 3 J1.m diam) was suspended in a ferrous-nickelous sulfate electroplating bath and occluded in the electrodeposited Fe-Ni alloy matrix. Subsequent heat treatment of the resulting composite coating formed the ternary alloy. The occlusion process was affected by the quantity of Cr powder suspended in the electrolyte and by the microstructure and composition of the electrodeposited matrix. Coatings containing up to 21 wt pct Cr were deposited from an electrolyte containing 20 vol pct suspended Cr powder. Heat treatment at 1,100° C for 8 h homogenized the composite coating. Deposition of 44Fe36Ni20Cr alloy coatings (250 J1.m thick) on AISI 1020 carbon steel rods, followed by heat treatment, provided complete protection of the carbon steel during exposure to a boiling 65-pct-HN03 solution. Corrosion rates of 0.6±OA mm/yr for the coating in the boiling HN03 approximate that of 304 stainless steel. Practically shaped electroforms have been prepared by the coating method.

Booster fans have been in regular use in British coal mines since the first half of this century, but a large increase in their use did not take place until after the Nationalization of coal mines in 1947. From that time the need was identified to improve standards of ventilation in general and mining engineers specializing in ventilation were appointed at all levels in the mining industry. A comprehensive approach to ventilation surveys and planning, together with the realisation of the benefits of booster fans, led to their more rapid introduction. Many coal mines in the U.K. are at moderate depth and have virgin strata temperatures of 30°C or less. The ability to control climatic conditions by increased ventilation rather than resort to cooling systems has led to the introduction of booster fans and recirculation systems in these mines. Large makes of methane and high levels of coal dust production due to increased mechanization have also required enhanced ventilation standards. This paper deals with the reasons for selecting booster fans and the specific safety considerations involved in their use. Numbers, types and sizes of booster fans in the U.K. are outlined, together with notes on installation and performance. Remote monitoring and control from the surface is dealt with, and current legislation. The evolution of controlled recirculation is also covered starting with auxiliary fan systems in 1970 and leading to very large district schemes in the late 1980s. The research at Newcastle upon Tyne University and other establishments in the climatic conditions associated with recirculation is summarised and its use in assisting existing and proposed conventional and recirculation systems is indicated.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory study to determine what effect use of water-jet-assisted cutting has on frictional-ignition suppression. A single bit with a steel tip, installed on a rotating drum, repeatedly made 22-in-long cuts in a block of Berea sandstone. The drum was operated in an enclosure that contained an explosive methane-air mixture. High-pressure front-mounted water jets operating at 2,000 to 5,000 psig and low-pressure rear-mounted sprays operating at 80 psig were used; the number of ignitions that occurred with each type of spray was compared. The rear-mounted spray was more effective for preventing frictional ignitions than the front-mounted water jet.

Single pellets of mixed lead-zinc concentrate containing up to 20 % lead were roasted in the temperature range of 800-1100¦C. Variables studied included pellet size (from 9-8 to 3-2 mm diameter), gas flowrate past the pellet (from 0.05 to 5 ms t), composition of the atmosphere and the effect of additives such as zinc oxide and silica. After defined periods of time, the pellets were removed from the furnace, quenched and submitted for chemical, XRD, SEM and microprobe analysis. The oxidation of the zinc sulphide followed a shrinking core model. Temperature measurements showed that very high pellet temperatures were experienced at the start of an experiment but after 5-10 minutes these approached a constant temperature. The lead loss from the pellets was then constant with time. Thermodynamics predicted the presence of two bands of lead material in the reacted layer of the pellet. These were found in practice. The lead loss from the pellet occurred from the outer oxysulphate layer via the vaporization of lead oxide polymers. The vapour pressure of PbO, and the loss of lead, was dependent on temperature and bulk gas concentrations of SO2 and 02. At 1100¦C the addition of silica greatly reduced the loss of lead from the pellet. Physical factors such as pellet diameter and gas flowrate past the pellet affected the particle dynamics. These results were found to vary in accordance with the predictions of the Froessling equation.

SUMMARY In August 1986, TRANSMANCHE LINK, a joint venture comprising the 10 companies who initially promoted the project, signed a contract with EUROTUNNEL for the design, construction and commissioning of the TRANSMANCHE fixed link for an amount of 4,5 billion dollars. On the French side, the work consists of digging three, 19km. long tunnels, of which almost 16 kms. are under the sea, up to the meeting point with the Tunnel works carried out by the British.. The tunnels are bored through chalk by 5 tunnelling machines, starting from one intermediate point at Sangatte near the coast: - Landward, they are drilled trough permeable strata of white and grey chalk. - Seaward, mainly through relatively impermeable chalk marl, but with the presence of water in faulted zones, or in grey chalk.

The primary function of a support slurry is to provide stability during excavation. Today foundation structures can be designed around the additional friction afforded by the absence of the filter cake attributable to the use of polymeric fluids as support slurries. These fluids use pseudoplastic fluid viscosity to advantage over the fragile thixotropic gel structures of bentonite. Many of today's polymeric fluids are environmentally acceptable for disposal directly to municipal sewers.

Shotcrete is used both in mining and tunnelling for supporting rock. Both dry and wet processes are used for shotcreting, and each produces good quality concrete. Thick shotcrete layers function as a concrete arch supporting loose rock. Thin layers prevent relative movements between the blocks of rock due to the fine concrete in the cracks and joints. No progressive fallouts occur since key blocks are kept in place. Rockbolts are often used together with shotcrete in order to create an arch around the tunnel making the rock to support itself. Shotcrete is sprayed either manually or by means of mechanized equipment. The aim is to spray required the layer thickness in one pass and with a minimum amount of rebound. Sprayed layers should also be as even as possible. The tip of the nozzle should be moved in circular movements. The shotcrete should be sprayed at a right angle to the rock surface; the optimum distance from the nozzle to the application surface must be found by experiment. In a mine shotcreting forms a materials handling system which includes batching, transporting and the actual shotcreting. The equipment used vary depending on the spraying method, mining conditions and the location of the mine. Shotcreting is performed with a purpose-designed unit in most cases where operation is mechanized. The shotcreting unit consists of a spraying machine with a hose and a nozzle, an additive system, a manipulator and a mobile carrier with all the necessary controls and accessories. The key element of the unit is the shotcreting manipulator which holds and guides the nozzle as required. The manipulators currently in use are hydraulically operated, and their remote controlled booms are also often called robots. These manipulators have enabled users to increase their output capacities, to remove the operator away from unsafe areas and from the influence of dust and rebound. Furthermore, they improve the shotcrete quality and reduce shotcreting costs.

Nearly all of the South African gold mining industry still uses fuse and igniter-cord initiation systems. Over the past 30 years numerous attempts at developing new initiation systems have not yielded a viable alternative. New initiation systems for narrow stopes are currently being developed by various concerns and the likelihood of these efforts producing feasible alternatives is greatly improved due to the recent advances in electronics technology. The greatest potential benefit of alternative initiation systems is increased production rates through improvements in accuracy and reliability of firing over that of fuse/igniter-cord. Another important feature is the capability of millisecond delay firing as this can lead to reduced stope cleaning times by way of enhanced rock throw and improved fragmentation characteristics.

The extension of Montparnasse Station in Paris required the construction of supports of very high unit capacity to support a particularly rigid super-structure. The majority of the site is characterized by the existence of old limestone quarries at a depth of approximately 20 metres. These workings have been backfilled in some places, have collapsed in some places and have given rise to local subsidences in the marne layers above them. This paper addresses the steps taken by the group of companies and their consultants to evaluate the equivalent stiffnesses of the supports necessary for the design of the superstructure, and gives details of the construction techniques chosen by the foundations specialist to adapt to the particular conditions encountered on this site.

By way of background. it is important to keep in mind that the information presented in this paper relates specifically to synthetically produced precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) fillers. Natural calcium carbonate fillers manufactured by grinding limestone, marble and chalk, though having similar chemical and physical analyses to PCCs, normally contribute somewhat different performance properties in paint, paper and polymer systems. Many factors have been cited and numerous theories have been proposed for the observed differences. Particle size parameters, surface chemistry and particle morphology are the items most frequently mentioned. A discussion of this subject is beyond the scope of this paper.

Precious metal mineralization at Mt. Hamilton" Nevada is associated with a poly-metallic, garnet-pyroxene skarn system developed in middle to upper Cambrian calcareous shales, limestones and dolomites. The skarn is developed around the Cretaceous Seligman and Monte cristo calc-alkaline stocks. Gold is associated with intense retrograde alteration. Later epithermal quartz veins containing gold, silver, base-metal sulfides, and sulfosalts cross-cut skarn alteration. Westmont Mining Inc. is currently developing two mineralized zones containing a geologic resource of approximately 7.7 M.T., which averages 0.05 OPT gold and 0.5 OPT silver. The project will have an estimated mine life of seven years, with a planned annual production rate of 35,000 ounces of gold and 300,000 ounces of silver.

Artificial intelligence, and especially expert systems, are currently receiving considerable attention. Of interest to the control engineer is the utilization of these tools for real-time process control applications. To evaluate this technology, a real-time expert control system was implemented in one of the grinding circuits at Brenda Mines Ltd. The performance of this micro computer based expert system compared satisfactorily to the proven supervisory control system currently in use. The study confirmed the expectations that expert systems have potential for real-time, supervisory control of mineral processing operations.
