Nautilus Minerals Inc is a sea floor resource exploration and development company focused on developing the Solwara 1 Project, a copper-gold sea floor massive sulfide deposit in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea, for which it holds a mining lease and associated environment permit.Economies depend upon four key types of capital: built, natural, financial and human. Natural capital consists of the ‘minerals, energy, plants, animals, ecosystems (climatic processes, nutrient cycles and other natural structures and systems) found on Earth that provide a flow of natural goods and services’ (Daly and Farley, 2004). Many ecosystem goods such as fish, fruit and water are already valued and sold in markets; however, some ecosystem services are not amenable to markets and have remained unvalued in traditional accounting methods, even though they provide significant value (such as flood protection, climate stability etc; Batker and Schmidt, 2015).There are now economic methods available to quantify and value natural capital and many non-market ecosystem services. When valued in dollars, these services can be incorporated into a number of economic tools, including benefit-cost analysis, accounting, environmental impact statements, asset management plans and rate of return on investment calculations. Their inclusion ultimately strengthens decision-making. When natural capital assets and ecosystem services are not considered in economic analysis, they are effectively valued at zero. This omission can lead to poor decisions, inefficient capital investments, higher incurred costs and losses due to unexpected events (Batker and Schmidt, 2015).In 2015 Earth Economics was commissioned by Nautilus Minerals Inc to conduct an independent, objective environmental and social benchmarking analysis of the proposed deep seabed Solwara 1 mine with terrestrial copper mines (referred to as ‘the report’). The report represents the first ever natural capital accounting and ecosystem goods and services framework for seabed mining.The report compares the proposed Solwara 1 mine with three terrestrial mines: Bingham Canyon (Utah, USA), Prominent Hill (South Australia, Australia), and Intag (a proposed mine in Intag Province, Ecuador), and provides a natural capital accounting assessment for all four operations.CITATION:Grogan, R, 2016. INTRODUCTION The demand for tunnelling can be related to urban population size and density; often, tunnelling occurs when a certain city size and density threshold is reached, and increases thereafter as a function of those population characteristics. Subways for rail mass transit are the most notable example, of course, but tunnels for water supply and perhaps for sewerage can also be related to size and density. As cities grow large they sometimes outgrow their local water supply and have to import water from distant places via tunnels; witness New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco. And it has been suggested that Chicago use deep tunnels for storm water storage because tertiary treatment to meet water quality standards will require treating storm water runoff.(1) Other uses of underground space also increase with urban density, e.g., underground parking, concourses and shopping centers such as Rockefeller Center in New York City and the Place Ville-Marie in Montreal. These examples can be viewed as illustrative of the central point of urban land economics. As the number of people locating in a place increase, they bid up land values and make the more intensive use of land economic, with land defined to embrace the space both above and below the surface. Hence, we are led to think about the city, and of urban land use, in three dimensions. A new mining area at the Vaal Reefs gold mine is to have a shaft. system which will extend to a depth of 4 200 m and will require 130 MW of cooling. A novel feature of the proposed cooling system is a large underground air cooling installation in which an ice slurry is sprayed into the ventilation air. The design of the ice slurry bulk air cooler, in the form of counter.flow cooling towers, is discussed. Comparative thermal tests with cold water and ice slurries (with ice mass fractions up to 22 per cent), were carried out in a 5 m high test tower. The presence of the ice in the water spray increases the resistance to heat flow and reduces the overall thermal characteristics of the air cooler by 8 per cent. Notwithstanding this, the use of ice slurries is indeed beneficial in terms of overall costs. It is concluded that a 25 MW air cooler should use 410 kg/s of ice slurry with a 10 per cent ice mass fraction to cool 550 kg/s of air which is 75 per cent of the total air flow rate.

The boundary element method is one of a number of tools that have found wide application in geomechanics for mine design and stress analysis. Two examples are presented in this paper, illustrating the use of the boundary element method to find potential problem regions in large-scale excavations. These examples are from a Papua New Guinea open cut mine and an Australian sub-level caving operation. Because of the scale of the mines and the complexity of the excavations, the boundary element method is the only practical numerical modelling technique to account for the major influences. Although the boundary element method uses only linear elastic models of the rock mass, the paper illustrates techniques for dealing with non-homogenous and anisotropic rock masses, as well as clasto-plastic effects associated with an excavation.

When the mining and milling of 1100 Copper Orebody commenced, difficulties were experienced in producing a satisfactory grade of copper concentrate. The major concentrate contaminants were fine pyrite and silica, particularly in the minus 10 microns fraction. Studies of the 1100 Orebody showed that much of the fine grained pyrite and a proportion of the silica present in the ore contained carbonaceous matter in the form of complete or partial rims and as internal carbon films disseminated throughout grains. The hydrophobic surface property of the carbonaceous material resulted in an inherently flotable fine pyrite and silica fraction. The addition of a 60:40 mixture of nigrosine and dextrine, initially to a prefloat concentrate of the inherently flotable carbonaceous material and finally to'the total copper flotation feed, successfully controlled the flotation rates of the carbonaceous pyrite and silica. The objective of a 25 per cent Cu concentrate grade was then achieved without decreasing copper recovery.

Introduction The Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR) is a national program dedicated to storage of large quantities of crude oil in leached salt caverns in the Texas-Louisiana gulf coast area. The program has required storage in existing caverns at each site and includes plans to leach new ones. The structural stability of each cavern depends on the behavior of the surrounding salt. In the past cavern stability has been predicted based on experience with other caverns in the vicinity. With the development of good non-linear finite element structural computer programs, it is possible to predict stability before the cavern is created. An important step in verifying the applicability of these predictive methods is comparison of analytical and field data. The analytical data come from finite element analyses of a specific cavern where the laboratory determined material properties and an approximation to the cavern geometry are used as input. These comparisons have been made for caverns in the Bayou Choctaw Dome (Louisiana) and Eminence Dome (Mississippi) with reasonably good correlation being obtained between measured and predicted volumetric response of the caverns. This paper discusses 1) the acquisition of material properties, 2) the finite element program SANCHO, and 3) the comparison of analytical and field data for each of the caverns.

The so-called COMAT process provides a method for leaching low grade sulphide mattes in an acidic ferric sulphate medium in such a way that non ferrous base metals such as Ni,Cu and Co are substantially all dissolved; the concentration of residual acid and dissolved iron remaining in the leaching solution is low, and a large portion of the sulphide sulphur is converted to elemental sulphur. Thus the quantity of neutralising agents required to remove residual acid and dissolved iron from the leach solution prior to subsequent recovery of the dissolved base metals is greatly reduced. The leach residue and iron precip- itate report in a readily filterable form. In this paper results obtained on a pilot plant scale are presented for the leaching of a typical low grade matte in the manner describ- ed above; for the solvent extraction and elec- trowinning of copper, and for the removal of residual acid, copper and iron from the copper solvent extraction raffinate. Processes tested on a laboratory scale for the further recovery of cobalt and nickel by solvent extraction and electrowinning, and for the recovery of sulphuric acid and ammonium hydr- oxide from the dissolved ammonium sulphate salt contained in the final plant effluent, are also briefly described.

Historically, the control of flotation operations has been viewed by many as an art. Only recently has process measurement and control come to be viewed not as an ?art? but as a very complex and productive science. In recent years, process control applications to flotation plants have been established and already some gains have been reported for several industrial operations using individual stabilizing control loops including level, pulp flow, pulp density, reagent addition rate and pH (Paakinen, 1979; Hales, 1985). The use of process control computers combined with on-line x-ray florescence (XRF) in industrial flotation circuits has made the application of more sophisticated control techniques feasible in the mineral recovery process. In spite of the availability of reliable instrumentation in modern flotation plants, satisfactory control strategies are difficult to develop and implement. Extremely important factors such as changes in ore type, liberation characteristics, flotability, degree of oxidation on particle surfaces, and specific gravity constitute unmeasured disturbances to the process. Most current control systems cannot adapt specifically to such disturbances.

Grinding has a marked effect on concentrator recovery and opera- ting cost, improved operation through automatic control can enhance plant performance. The correct application of automatic control can only be accomplished after the basic process variables and their effect on mill operation have been defined. This paper develops a control system for a closed circuit grinding system. Typical control systems such as feed, water flow, level and circulating load are discussed. A method of determining controllability is outlined using the calculated reaction curve technique. Various successful methods of automatic grinding control applications are discussed and future possibilities are outlined. Although this paper primarily deals with closed circuit wet grinding circuits, the principles involved can be readily applied to other processes.

This paper reviews the floor heave mechanisms in underground coal mine roadways. Previous studies have reported three main failure mechanisms: bearing capacity failure, buckling and swelling. The buckling failure has been observed where immediate floor strata are relatively strong and thinly bedded. On the contrary, the weak floor strata have been associated with both the bearing capacity failure and swelling mechanisms. The bearing capacity floor failures are likely to induce other types of instability such as pillar punching, tensile failure of pillar, roof fall and subsidence as well as floor heave. Despite a considerable amount of research, predicting the magnitude, location and timing of floor deformation is challenging with current state of knowledge. Fundamental results obtained from research on the properties of the edge surfaces of kaolinite particles (~500 nm) are reported. Of particular significance was the development of the experimental protocol. Well-ordered kaolinite edge surfaces were prepared as an epoxy resin sandwich structure having layered kaolinite particles in the center of the epoxy resin sandwich. Images of the sectioned kaolinite edge surfaces were examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the average thickness of kaolinite particles in this study was determined to be 38.3 nm ± 11.7 nm. Furthermore, the surface charge of the kaolinite edge surfaces was evaluated with a super sharp Si tip. The point of zero charge (PZC) of the kaolinite edge surface was determined to be below pH 4, in contrast to the traditional view that the edge surfaces of kaolinite particles may carry a positive charge at pH 4. This lower PZC of the kaolinite edge surface was attributed to the lack of isomorphous substitution in the silica tetrahedral layer when compared to the PZC for the muscovite edge surface. Our results are consistent with the particle aggregation and flotation behavior of kaolinite, and should provide the basis for improved flotation strategies leading to the efficient recovery and utilization of mineral and energy resources.

Traditional risk quantification methods provide little information on the sources of risk, and tend to produce static over-conservative evaluations, which do not account for changes in the performance of the project. Capital investment decisions for large mining projects require of more complex risk evaluation models, that include the value of flexibility and the different risk levels associated with uncertainty on project variables (price, grade, dilution, production rates, among many other). In this context, Real Option Valuation (ROV) methods have proven potential to quantify the risk associated with such variables and integrate alternative scenarios and management strategies into the evaluation process. In this paper, a risk quantification model is developed, which successfully quantifies the risk associated to dilution, as a function of production rate. This model is then validated in a case study on the Chuquicamata Underground Mining Project.

THERE are regularly manufactured in the eleven Bessemer steel rail mills of the United States, 119 patterns* of steel rails, of 27 different weights per yard. This list does not include patterns which, although still largely inn use, are regarded by experts as obsolete, and which would swell the number to nearly 300; nor does it include all, the patterns for which rolls are kept on hand to fill a possible demand; nor does it include extra pattern,- rolled in one finishing groove by opening or closing the rolls so as to get different weights with the same contours. The list embraces only those separate patterns which are subject to current orders. How thoroughly modern these patterns are, is shown by the fact that of the whole 119, there are but five patterns of conspicuously bad shape; all the rest more or less completely illustrate the standard features,-a heavy bead,. light web and flanges, and a good angle :to hold the fish-plate. Sixty-two per cent. of the patterns have the "Chanute" head, which was not designed until 1874.† Sixty-four per cent. of the 119 patterns are embraced under five weights per yard,; three only of these vary from standard type; there am thus 76 patterns, all of them modern and standard, to represent five different weights, for which five patterns would perfectly answer. Of the 60-lb. rails, there is only one of the pear-head type, while a dozen of the bevelled head templets cannot be distinguished from each other * From all the works 188 patterns were sent to me as standard. Of these I found 119 different shapes and 69 duplicates. † Since this paper was read I have seen at the Bethlehem Iron. Works the templet of a 68-pound Lehigh Valley rail, with the bevelled head, usually called the "Chanute" head, and marked "Templet of 1872." This is shown on Plate II. I learn that iron rails, with bevelled heads, were rolled at Bethlehem prior to 1870.

This paper will be presented jointly by El Dorado Chemical Co. and Arch of Illinois. It will deal with the simultaneous blasting of multiple overburden seams in surface coal mining. With the development of a new pit in Southern Illinois, production personnel with Arch were faced with serious equipment cycling problems. The solution to the problem was the development of a procedure that reduced drill movements on the highwall.

"The accuracy of a measurement on minerals and ores can be assured by applying suitable and unbiased procedures but its precision is a function of the number of primary increments and their mass, the number of lots per consignment or samples per shift, and the number of measurements on analysis fine samples.Experimental data will be used to show how the variance components for sampling, sample preparation and analysis contribute to the total variance on which precision statements for the final measurement are based. This type of experiment should not only form part of quality control programs at mines and smelters, but also underly the criteria on which the design of manual sampling regimes and mechanical sampling systems for bulk solids and slurries should be based.Sampling systems and regimes can only be adjusted and optimized if the variance component for each step in a quality evaluation process is measured. Knowledge of precision characteristics lies at the core of effective loss prevention and control programs."

The equilibrium of boron nitride, gaseous nitrogen, and solute boron was investigated in Fe, Fe-C, and Fe-Si rnelts by the Sieverts technique. The free ellergy of dissociation of boron nitride, involving -the implied standard states, was evaluated in the range 1400" to 1600°C as: ?Fo = 38,000 - 23.5T, cal ber mole The solute-solute interaction coefficients eBB, ecB , and eg were determined as 0.058, 0.22, and 0.078, respectively. BORON is an important ingredient in some types of steel and cast iron. It was employed at a particularly high level, 0.01 wt pet, in the as-cast malleable iron "CentraSteel".1 In this material, the boron concentration was critical in order to assure graphite, and avoid primary cementite, in the as-cast structure. One possible function of the boron in this alloy was the nucleation of graphite through the agency of boron nitride, which, conceivably, precipitated from the melt during cooling. A research program was instituted to assess the validity of this proposed mechanism. The first undertaking, reported here, was a determination of the thermodynamic possibility of boron nitride precipitation. Data available in the literature on the activity coefficient of solute boron in iron-base melts are inadequate for the present purpose. The able address on the currency question given by the Right Honorable A. J. Balfour, M.P., late leader of the Government, at the Mansion House lately, before a large and influential audience, will strike a key-note that will resound throughout the world. It is high time that gentlemen of position and influence should come forward and express their views on this subject, so as to cause the matter to be,more seriously considered than it has been. The question can be no longer ignored or treated with indifference by bankers, financiers, merchants, miners, and others interested in the settlment on some basis the relative values gold and silver bear to each other. It is gratifying to not that such a great leader of political opinion as Mr. Balfour has given serious attention to this important question.The address created a deep impression ,on the minds of many who probably had not given the matter much att.ention, and Mr. Balfour's words will re-echo over a wide range of thought with such effect that I have no doubt they will materially help to check the downward tendency of the value and uses of silver. As a mining engineer, interested in the development of our mining resources for increasing gold aud silver for currency, and having devoted much attention to the subject, I cordially approve of the views set forth by Mr. Balfouf, and I think the general body of all interested in the production of gold and silver will do the same.

El presente trabajo explica el panorama historiográfico del proyectoToquepala, -en tanto proyecto industrial de la historia minera del cobre-, así como su influencia en el desarrollo económico y manufacturero del Perú. El depósito mineral de Toquepala está situado en el departamente de Tacna, zona sur del país. El reconocimiento como zona cuprífera es partir de Velarde en La Minería enel Perú (1908) y Basadre en Estado actual y porvenir de la industria minera en los departamentos del sur del Perú (1918). Posteriormente en 1937, Juan Oviedo de Villegas denunció los depósitos en Toquepala y fue el geólogo Schmedeman de la cerro de Pasco Corporation, quien reconoció la mina como un depósito de pórfido de cobre. Es a partir de 1938 que se inicia la explotación y en 1948, la Northern Peru Mining and Smelting Company se hace propietario de la zona minera. La exploración del depósito de Toquepala se realizó por medio de taladros verticales, perforados con máquinas de diamantina y de percusión. Durante el periodo de perforación, se realiza un sondaje de percusión previo que determina la extensión hacia otros hoyos para muestrear los valores y así medir la capa y espesor del mineral, mientras que el sondaje diamantino informa sobre la interpretación geológica del subsuelo de esa sección. Para la comprobación de los resultados de la perforacíón se buscó comparar los resultados de perforaciones de diámetro pequeños y grandes, con aquellos del minado del mineral en volúmenes de muestras relativamente grandes. Los métodos de muestreo empleados fueron acorde a las prácticas más estrictas actualmente recomendadas en este tipo de trabajos y supervisados bajo el control de un personal técnico. Luego del trabajo de comprobación del depósito de Toquepala, a mediados del año 1955, se unieron cuatro compañías para formar la Southern Peru Copper Corporation y en ese mismo año el gobierno peruano aprueba el desarrollo del programa y operación de este proyecto . Los planes de minado fueron terminados en 1955 minero. El avance de los trabajos de preparación de este proyecto se realiza a través de dos partes: la construcción de los servicios necesarios para la operación y los trabajos de preparación preliminares a la explotación minera. El ajuste de constucción y minado del programa se culminó en cuatro años (1952 - 1954), dando inicio a la operación en 1955. Finalmente, hablar la inflluencia del proyecto de Toquepala en el desarrollo económico industrial en el sur del Perú, es señalar su apoyo en el manejo de las vías de comunicación, favoreciendo el intercambio comercial entre las zonas ganaderas de la sierra de Tacna, Moquegua y el resto del país, así como del progreso de pequeñas industrias. El acceso a la educación y la erradicación de bajas condiciones sanitarias son elementos que también ayudan al avance social de la población, otorgándole a este proyecto sureño, un lugar importante en el panorama industrial y minero del país.
