Carbonatites - igneous carbonate-silicate rocks - host the world's major resources for niobium, phosphorous and REE (rare earth elements).Carbonatites represent the least common products of mantle and igneous processes and their emplacement is principally controlled by lithospheric domes and rift structures. Intrusive carbonatites frequently comprise carbonate-amphibole-apatite-pyrocWore assemblages, occur as plugs, cores, dykes, sills sheets, veins, pipes and irregular bodies, are gecichemically anomalous (Ba, Ca, Cl, F, Hf, Mg, Nb, P, REE, S, Sc, SO4, Sri Tb, Ti, D, V, Zr), are associated with alkaline silica-undersaturated igneous rocks forming carbonatite complexes, and display large, intensive alteration haloes. Also carbonatites are similar to limestones, prone to weathering, and may form thick laterite profiles.Magmatic ores (pyrocWore, apatite, bastnaesite, monazite, magnetite, baddeleyite, phlogopite, fluorite, calcite) and weathering related residual and supergene ores (pyrochlore, apatite, magnetite, anatase, vermiculite) are currently being mined on all continents except Australia. Australia is underexplored for carbonatite associated primary magmatic and especially residual-supergene ore deposits. Chances are very high for the finding of new carbonatite, occurrences and associated ores.

Papua New Guinea's mainland is dominated by a foreland thrust belt, which can be divided into two zones. The "body" zone is floored by Palaeozoic granites and metamorphics of the Fly Platform (Tasman Orogen). Underlying the "tail" zone is Papuan Plateau, rifted from the Tasman Orogen during Coral Sea spreading, and believed to underlie the Papuan Peninsula and Papuan Islands region (D'Entrecasteaux, Woodlark, Misima, Sudest, and Rossel Islands). Thrusting began in the Miocene and continues today in the crust below the "body" zone. The youngest known thrusted rocks in the "tail" zone are Pliocene in age. Recognition of foreland thrusting has major implications for petroleum prospectivity of the Papuan and North New Guinea Basins, mineral exploration prospectivity, and geological terrane identification in PNG.

The mining industry is quite often faced with declining selling prices for its products in the face of rising prices for the input cost resources that it uses. Blasting is a key activity within the mining system and has a vital role to play within the Mine to MillTM concept. It is therefore important that blasting makes a positive contribution to mine profit and productivity. There are several variables involved in considering the profitability and productivity of blasting. The rock types and structures, the bench height, the blast hole drill rig specifications, hole diameter, spacing and burden, explosive loading and initiation and blast size fragmentation. Productivity accounting is a methodology which is used elsewhere to give additional insights into the productivity and pricing factors that drive the financial performance of a business. Miners know intuitively that productivity and pricing influence costs and profit, but only with productivity accounting can the dollars involved be calculated. Drilling and blasting are part of a chain of unit operations in a mine. For an owner-miner, drilling and blasting would be considered as cost centres and a productivity accounting cost model approach would be relevant. On the other hand a contractor is likely to consider drilling and blasting as a profit centre, in which case a productivity accounting profit model approach would be appropriate. Both of these will be explained. The paper provides a basic outline of deterministic productivity accounting and demonstrates its application to blasting. Drilling and blasting data from a mine was obtained for a two-month period. The change in productivity and prices was calculated to obtain the dollar contributions from them towards the change in cost. It was determined that although there had been productivity dollar gains these were offset by larger pricing dollar losses, the net effect being that total drilling and blasting costs increased. The productivity accounting analysis gives the facts and the mine is in a position to establish priorities based on knowing the dollar contributions of each input used.

Commercial or potentially commercial deposits of coal occur in Australia in strata ranging in age from Permian to Tertiary. The coals of each period tend to show a community of petrographic character and significant differences as compared with coals of other ages. In particular- many of the Permian coals are unusually rich in inertinite whereas the Jurassic and Tertiary coals are typically very rich in vitrinite. The majority of the coals show evidence of deposition in environments subject to relatively minor marine influence. Except for some Tertiary and Permian coals the content of mineral matter tends to be high. Outcrops of coals of bituminous rank appear to be largely restricted to the eastern margin of the Australian continent. In this region vertical rank gradients are generally higher than in the other sedimentary basins and uplift and the removal of cover has occurred to a greater extent. To the west of the Tasman geosyncline, coal of bituminous rank generally occurs at considerable depths (usually in excess of 1 km and in some areas only at depths of over 2 kms), and in most areas coals at shallow depth are of sub-bituminous or brown coal rank. The controls of the distribution of coal type and rank have considerable economic significance and the unusual characteristics of Australian coals, especially with respect to coal type, make the direct application of overseas technology to Australian coals inappropriate.

To assess the present-day functionality of large-scale sublevel caving at LKAB Kiruna a comprehensive measurement program was undertaken involving blast function, fragmentation and gravity flow. As part of this assessment, a fragmentation measurement trial was performed based on 3D imaging of the drawpoint and corresponding bucket load of the underground load-haul-dump (LHD) excavator. 3D image data from stereo photogrammetry was collected and an automated image analysis strategy developed. A number of data sets were collected for each of the drawpoint and LHD bucket, along with sieving results for four of the LHD bucket loads (totally about 70 t). Two of the sieving results were used to inform the automated image analysis strategy, and two were held back as a comparison. Large variations in the visible particles are apparent when comparing corresponding drawpoints and LHD buckets highlighting the impact of sampling location and the need to measure large quantities of data in order to avoid bias from small samples. The results show that 3D imaging and analysis can produce fully automated measurement and analysis of the visible particle size distribution. Although this is not the same as the sieve-size distribution it provides useful estimation of both the larger size classes and a bulk estimate of fine material below approximately 60 mm. The 3D stereo photogrammetry measurement system used produced very high 3D point density but this was achieved using a custom up-sampling technique which significantly smoothed the data, removing small particles, smoothing edges, and this negatively affected the particle delineation algorithms.CITATION:Thurley, M J, Wimmer, M and Nordqvist, A, 2015. Geological data processing by machine enables'an increased rate of coverage, better supervision and control of field programmes, increased effectiveness of field operators, and vastly improved access to old and new field data. Even a system of restricted felxibility enables a mapping programme to be organ- ized and conducted independent of personnel changes, whilst elimination of much compilation time increases the rate of cover- age such that it relates to mode of transport and geological complexity rather than to personality factors. A machine is useful only if applied to tasks suited to its capabilities, and must be aimed at those types of mapping in which a limited number of attributes adequately define the problem, and the data is of a form suited to coding and is normally collected in sufficient abundance to make compilation wearisome. Machine systems are therefore unsuited to most types of lithological mapping and to most types of exploration in new areas, but have proved useful in many branched of cartographic geophysics (e.g. gravity and magnetics), and in cartographic Geochemistry.

The principal objective of Geotechnical Engineers supporting operating mines is to provide safe working conditions and ensure that pit designs are geotechnically optimised to site conditions and pre-defined stability requirements. Pit slope designs are delivered in advance of pit excavations. Making changes to these designs is usually slow to enact and involves a layered sign-off before implementation, leading to unwanted delays in their adoption and subsequently increased production pressures. When unexpected ground conditions are encountered during the mining process, or short-term mining schedule requirements demand it, changes to these designs may not be easily feasible in certain situations. It is when these scenarios arise that Geotechnical Engineers need to be proactive and consider unconventional options to deliver safe operating conditions while satisfying short-term requirements to the mine schedule. Essentially, the geotechnical short-term strategic designs double-pronged approach supports the mine schedule while providing safe conditions and minimising geotechnical risks for people and equipment. Common short-term strategic geotechnical designs include; slope buttressing, over-steepening cut slopes to increase reserve recovery through unplanned or emergency cutbacks, and accepting risk threat and operating under unstable slopes. When implementing strategic design options, the Geotechnical Engineer must consider the broader implications for such designs. They must think of the plan’s long-term effects on the mine schedule and pit wall stability. Initiating aggressive designs to recover additional reserves to satisfy a short-term scheduling demand could result in-pit wall instability or suboptimal pit layout. Before and during the implementation phase, the Geotechnical Engineer must communicate and engage with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the plan is executed accordingly and geotechnical risks are effectively managed. Proactiveness to ground response and implementation of risk management strategies will improve safety performance and optimise mining schedules.

The dielectric properties of practically all oxide and sulphide ore minerals are such that they heat rapidly when irradiated with microwaves particularly at the standard frequency of 2450 MHz. The presence of carbon or low rank coal mixed with the minerals still further enhances the heating rate. Amongst the patented technologies being investigated are: (i) the direct reduction of oxides with or without carbon included in the pellets or briquettes; (ii) microwave precursor heating of composites ahead of smelt reduction; (iii) microwave smelting of ore or concentrate mixtures with carbon, sometimes assisted with oxygen. Microwaves appear to stimulate endothermic reduction reactions as readily as they do exothermic oxidation reactions. Being a method of achieving "bulk" heating, composites or columns of ore-char blends rapidly heat throughout rather than from the outside inwards as in conventional heating. The microwaves of themselves do not generate any gas - the only gases to be cleaned are the products of reaction in the composites or blends, plus the products of oxygen smelting. In the case of sulphide composites, depending on the quantity and type of low rank coal or char present, sulphur may be eliminated, and collected, in the elemental form. Furthermore, reactions seem to take place at lower temperatures than in conventional smelting but no doubt at the "points" where actual reactions are taking place the atomic or molecular vibrations are such as to satisfy the laws of thermodynamics. Examples are given of the production of unusual products of smelting sulphide concentrates and also the alloys produced from refractory minerals such as chromite and ilmenite. The techniques have been used to produce products with as wide a range of melting points as relatively pure tin and tungsten-molybdenum alloys. Special equipment is being designed and evaluated for these new fields of pyrometallurgy.

As filtering technology improves and there is an increased focus on environmental impacts, the concept of managing fine coal rejects by filtering, mixing with coarse rejects and dry stacking them is being considered more seriously. In Queensland, there appears to be a desire from regulators to move away from wet rejects facilities towards dry-stacked facilities, resulting in a change in the risk profile for the facility.A coalminer has a site with many constraints, including limited area that is not planned to be undermined and nearby rivers that are prone to flooding. The design of a dry-stacked facility that meets the operational requirements and environmental compliance criteria is challenging in subtropical climatic settings, where there is a need to consider wet seasons with high-volume, sustained rainfall events. The impact of the rainfall is multifaceted, requiring careful surface water management to separate clean and contact water, adequate foundation preparation to limit seepage to groundwater, management of stack stability given a potentially high phreatic surface and the avoidance of potential flood zones. These design constraints were compounded by a limited area available for rejects storage that would not be undermined.This paper presents a summary of the conceptual design of a dry rejects facility, including consideration of regulatory and client requirements, provision for expansion while also considering progressive rehabilitation, diversion of clean water as much as practicable during operations and siting constraints. Spray-on liners used in the mining industry for ground support and stabilisation applications are either cement based (æshotcreteÆ) or polymer based (æthin spray-on linersÆ). Some thin spray-on liners are a blend of both polymer and cement (eg Tekflex). A small number of thin spray-on liners (TSLs) have been trialled in Australia as potential replacements for steel mesh in roadways and other underground mining applications; however, they were found to cure slowly and the cured coatings became brittle after an extended time in place. The University of Wollongong in collaboration with the Australian coal mining industry has shown that a viable polymer-based alternative to steel mesh in underground roadway support applications can be developed to eliminate the use and handling of steel mesh. The work to date has: established the feasibility of developing polymeric alternatives to steel mesh in underground roadway support applications; identified the physical and material constraints to be endured by any new polymeric skin reinforcement system by measuring the mechanical properties of steel mesh; identified materials that can be spray applied; and demonstrated that polymer mechanical properties can be optimised to produce similar mechanical properties (elastic modulus, yield stress, elongation-at-break, etc) to steel mesh. The identified materials will: allow the face support cycle to be fully automated, or at least remotely operated and installed; remove personnel from the immediate face area; and substantially improve underground roadway development rates.

Bureau of Medical Inspection, Broken Hill, New South Wales.INTRODUCTIONFor a considerable time it has be3n realised that the pathological changes produced in human lungs by the inhalation of free silica varied, not only according to the amount of silica inhaled, its particle size and the period during which it was inhaled, but also according to other mineral elements which might be admixed with the fine silica dust and inhaled along with it, or inhaled subsequently to the silica containing dust. It was observed that, in many instances, these admixed dusts tended to inhibit the action of the free silica in causing injury to the lungs, as well as the development of certain complications, whilst in other cases it was felt that certain substances could actually accelerate the tissue damage caused by the silica.A fresh impetus to the problem of the prevention of the development of silicosis was given when, in 1937 and 1939, Denny, Robson and Irwin published papers entitled "The Prevention of Silicosis by Metallic Aluminum." Working at the same time at the Saranac La.boratory, and quite independently, and using a colloidal aluminum hydroxide, Gardner arrived at the same conclusions as Denny, Robson and Irwin, namely, that in experimental animals the development of silicotic changes could be prevented if eithertogether with the silica, or subsequent to its inhalation...

In Australian coalmines there are a number of coal quality parameters that are measured by analysing samples from boreholes. The data points are used to generate spatial models of these parameters, typically using inverse distance as an interpolation method. Numerous additional boreholes are drilled which have geophysical logs measured downhole but from which no coal quality samples are taken. Full suites of coal quality analyses are expensive and time consuming to drill and sample. If geophysical proxies for coal quality could be used, this would greatly improve the accuracy of the resource estimation without additional cost.This paper examines two of the most important coal quality parameters – ash and volatile matter – and assesses the results of a number of geostatistical interpolation methods. The aim is to improve the accuracy of the interpolated models. Auxiliary variables from geophysical logs are also trialled to improve the estimation.A multivariate analysis of ash, volatile matter and several auxiliary variables of a selected coal seam was undertaken in a spatial context, using variography. This was used to construct a model of co-regionalisation that relates all of the variables as manifestations of an underlying geological theme.The traditional inverse distance interpolation approach was compared to ordinary kriging, universal kriging, co-kriging, regression kriging and kriging with external drift approaches. The relative merits of the six interpolation methods were compared by removing all points, one at a time and estimating at the thus known location. The mean error and the root mean square error were evaluated as a measure of bias and precision.This paper demonstrates that there is significant opportunity to improve the estimations of coal quality when using kriging with external drift. For example, the results show that when using the depth of a sample as an external drift variable there is a significant improvement in the accuracy of estimation for volatile matter. Furthermore, when using borehole wireline density logs as an auxiliary variable for ash content, there is improvement in the estimation of the in situ ash. The underpinning reasons for this are discussed in the context of the underlying geology and the physical properties of the coal. Pillar extraction carried out using various methods (split and lift, Wongawilli and Old Ben) involves the formation of narrow fenders (commonly 7 m of coal) formed by driving "splits" for lifting off with a continuous miner. The strata above a split and fender adjacent to the goaf consists of a cantilever beam (usually >3 m thick) that extends from the solid coal and bridges across the fender. Lifting off the fender from the split in safe conditions depends upon the bridging capability of the cantilever and the fender strength. The nature and competence of the immediate and near roof, the support capability of the coal fender and the presence of faults and or joints can adversely affect the bridging behaviour of the cantilever. Insufficient knowledge of these parameters can lead to extraction under dangerous conditions. Remnants of fenders ("stooks") also support the cantilever and their dimensions are critical to obtain regular caving and goaf falls. Stook area, goaf roof span and roof stand-up time after lifting can be related and only a relatively small increase in stook area of 10-15 m2 can lead to a significantly increased stand-up time, especially under a massive roof. Such conditions strongly influence the re- distribution of abutment stresses and can create increased outbye pillar loading. Based on detailed underground geotechnical investigations, it is concluded that strata caveability, roof cantilever behaviour, fender H:W ratio and remnant stook size are all critical parameters for successful and safe pillar extraction.

The fast rate of development in the micro technology industry is enabling computer based systems to be used in ways never considered before. Micro technology can be used to great advantage in the mining industry to improve both safety and productivity. The planned use of electronic 'IN/OUT' boards at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (ZC/NBHC) mines will provide a much improved system for checking that the mines are clear before firing. The provision of remote ocaputerised core logging facilities made possible by small remote data entry terminals will greatly improve the productivity of the personnel involved in all stages of core Logging.

"Segregation of conveyor roadways is a ventilation practice that is being increasingly applied in Australia. It is largely driven by the legislated requirements in Queensland pertaining to separation of escapeways from the mine. This legal requirement was based on a recommendation from the Moura No. 2 WardenÆs Inquiry (Windridge, 1996) into the mine disaster that claimed 11 lives. The report recommended: ... the introduction of a requirement for all underground mines to have one intake airway that is completely segregated from other parallel intake airways so as to provide two separate means of egress from the mine via an intake airway.This recommendation seeks to assist mine workers in escape from a mine after a fire by providing them with an airway that is free from smoke or contaminants.The concept of an airway being æcompletely segregatedÆ is an ideal that is challenging to implement in practice when considering the effect of leakage. The practice of belt segregation is concerned with the potential for fires in the belt roadway although there are numerous other potential fire sources in underground coal mines. A review of segregation practices has been conducted applying ventilation engineering principles. Four different scenarios have been analysed with regard to the effectiveness of the segregation stoppings in preventing potential fire contaminants migrating to other parts of the mine. The results show that in some cases the benefits of segregation to a person evacuating a mine in the event of a fire range from beneficial to detrimental. This is influenced by many factors including the location of that individual in that particular mine. There is room for improvement in the design and implementation of escapeways in underground coal mines. Escapeways need to be planned and designated with regard to the potential sources of fire, pressure differentials between escapeways and the operational practicalities of maintaining the pressure differential between them.CITATION:Olsen, M, 2013. In order that the processes seen may be followed in their proper 'order, the subject will be dealt with as follows, (1) Wallaroo and Moonta Mines; (2) Wallaroo and Moonta Mines Smelting Works; (3) Broken Hill Mines; (4) Concentration at Broken Hill; (5) Smelting and refining of Lead, Silver, and Gold at Port Pirie. The first acquaintance with the copper region was made at the Yelta shaft and dressing mill of the Parramatta Copper Mines Co. at Moonta. The country rock at Moonta is a hard, tough, felsitic porphyry, the copper lodes having a general strike of N. 30° Kilipping from 500 to 70°. This necessitates shaft-sinking on the lode, and underlay shafts are the rule on the field. The ore is raised in the Yelta shaft in wheeled skips, and consists of ·chalcopyrite, bornite, pseudomorphic hematite, containing, in addition, molybdenite and tourmaline. The ore from the bins at the brace is passed over a grizzly; the over-size is hand-picked into smelting ore, concentrating ore, and waste rock (00 attle ), which is sent below for filling. The under-size is elevated to a trommel having in. holes. The over-size falls on to a picking belt made up of lengths of rope strapped with iron, working over wooden pulleys.

The choice of the best-fit broker or banker is of great importance, and in the case of the miner, this is a house that has an intimate understanding of the mining industry, particularly one that has a solid staff complement of personnel with operating mine experience at a senior level. The most important document that the company will present to support its financing request will be the Feasibility Study. It cannot be too strongly emphasised that this document must be absolutely comprehensive and cover items including: (a) Geological review; (b) Resources and reserves; (c) Mineability; (d) Mining schedule; (e) Metallurgy; (f) Process plant description; (g) Infrastructure and services; (h) Management and operations; (i) Environmental and social impact; (j) Capital costs; (k) Operating costs; and (1) Financial analysis. The elements listed above represent major topics and require a great deal of expansion in the body of the document. Newmont Australia Limited has for some 15 years mined a number of large open cuts associated with the Telfer Gold Dome deposits. The principal ore body exploited has been the East Flank of the Main Dome where a very high grade gold reef deposit of mixed metal sulphides, grades in excess of 20gA Au, has been mined in conjunction with dissemi- nated mineralisation contained in the overburden material. The main ore body has been under review for some years as an under- ground mine, however due to the ore body widths of less than 1 metre and a dip generally less than 35 degrees and a very weak host rocks earlier studies all resulted in a continuation of open pit mining activities. In early 1988 it was recognised that open cast mining would not be able to mine all of this valuable resource and a feasibility study was commenced to come up with a practical and economic approach to underground mining.

Two tunnels are being bored using a æHydroshieldÆ in section 3.1 of the extension of the Underground railway line 5. At the end of the two tunnels, directly in front of the Hotel Adlon, the shields cannot be retrieved. The steel shell of the shield will be left in place within a sealed concrete block and the reusable components taken out through the completed tunnel. For the first time in Germany, an Underground tunnel is being lined solely by means of UNI rings. BerlinÆs Underground network is 165 km long and has 167 stations. Some 450 million passengers are transported annually. On account of the urban planning modifications that followed reunification, the network has to be adjusted, particularly in the city centre. The most significant project is the extension of the U5 from Alexanderplatz to the Lehrter Bahnhof. After completion, the U5 will be a continuous east-west traffic artery. It will provide a direct link with the new parliamentary and government district, open up new business districts and the cultural centre of the city.
