"Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project (Eurasia Tunnel) includes 3.34 km of a bored double-deck tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait, at a maximum depth of 106 m from the sea level, and 1 km of twin NATM tunnels on the Asian side. The region’s variable geology, hydrology and propensity for seismic activity, combined with high water pressure and large-diameter/double-deck tunnel configuration, make the Eurasia Tunnel one of today’s most challenging and complex projects under construction. Due to the site’s proximity to the active North Anatolian Fault, the tunnel is designed to withstand a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. The tunnel penetrates through both the Trakya bedrock (on both European and Asian sides) and the alluvial sediments at the bottom of the channel. The tunnel is designed to accommodate differential displacements by introducing seismic/flexible joints at proper locations at the transition zones between rock and soft soils. Tunnel fire is also a significant design consideration for undersea tunnel due to that the rubber protecting it in close proximity of the seismic joint should resist a fire for long term safety and durability. This paper mainly focuses on the design for method of tunnel response analysis in transverse and longitudinal direction against seismic demands relating with the seismic joints. INTRODUCTION Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project (Eurasia Tunnel) will build and operate a roadway tunnel under the Borphorus connecting Kazlicesme on the European side and Goztepe on the Asian side, to provide additional road-access across the Strait and consist of three main parts as shown in Figure 1."

"The Sutter Butte Flood Control Agency initiated the Feather River West Levee (FRWL) Program in 2010 to bring 35 miles of levee along the Feather River into compliance with applicable Federal and State standards for levees protecting urban areas. A combination of soil-bentonite cutoff walls, soil-cement-bentonite cutoff walls, and seepage berms will reduce flood risk by correcting under and through seepage deficiencies and remove more than 34,000 properties from the FEMA Special Flood Hazard Areas. The FRWL program includes a combined total of 7,744,803 square feet (SF) of cutoff wall planned to be constructed between 2013 and 2015. Cutoff wall construction methods to meet the design depths included conventional excavation to a depth of 85 feet and deep soil mixing for depths up to 120 feet. A key component of the FRWL program was the development of site specific mix designs using the design boring logs to evaluate the expected backfill gradation and permeability results. Issues that required a partnership between Contractors, Owner and Engineers included substantial Archaeological and Cultural Resource delays, significant depth changes due to a change in competent key, right of way acquisitions for abutting land, and the magnitude of the project in a resource limited industry.IntroductionThe Feather River watershed basin is located 50 miles north of Sacramento, CA and incorporates the agriculture producing communities of Yuba City, Live Oak, Gridley and Biggs. These communities are protected from flooding by levees that contain under-seepage and through-seepage deficiencies and were the cause of major failures in 1955, 1986 and 1997. The Feather River West Levee (FRWL) program was initiated by the Sutter Butte Flood Control Agency (SBFCA) in 2010. The long term objective of SBFCA is to correct the levee deficiencies and provide 200 year flood protection to more than 34,000 at risk properties located within the FEMA Special Flood Hazard Areas.Although FRWL contained a variety of construction components such as earthwork and pipe replacement, the slurry cutoff wall is the primary construction element for addressing under and through seepage deficiencies. From 2013 to 2015 approximately 6,649,210 SF of cutoff wall were installed using conventional excavation and deep soil mixing (DSM) techniques leaving 1,095,593 SF to be completed in 2016. The work was designed, solicited and constructed under two separate contracts, titled Project Area C and Project Area B&D. A summary of the contracts and cutoff wall quantities is presented in Table 1."

Designing post-mining landscapes requires quantifying the short and long-term risks. In recent years, computer based landscape evolution models (LEMs) have been used to provide insight into both erosion rates and processes (i.e. sheetwash, rill, gully erosion). An important requirement of these models is high quality model input parameter data, which includes both the surface material (i.e. soil and waste rock) and climate information. However, in many cases such data is limited and in the case of climate information, the data is often short and incomplete. Here we develop climate scenarios and examine different surface material properties using a case study at the ERA Ranger mine located in the Northern Territory, Australia Firstly we develop scenarios that represent the range of future climates that may be experienced at the site. Secondly we develop a series of plausible particle size distributions based on a large sampling exercise of the waste rock material. We then test the sensitivity of different rainfall sequences and surface materials on sediment output using a well-tested landscape evolution and sediment transport model (Hancock et al., 2017). This study focuses on quantifying the effects of water infiltration on a full-scale energy pile system’s ability to meet the thermal demand of an HVAC system. Theoretically, an energy pile system should increase its thermal capacity after a rain event due to increased moisture content creating an increase in thermal conductivity of the surrounding soil matrix. The United States Air Force Academy has an energy pile research site consisting of 8 full-scale energy piles located below a shower facility. The local colluvium surrounding the piles allows for relatively high water infiltration during rain events. This study uses an 11kW Precision Geothermal Geocube to apply a thermal load on two single-loop piles. A weather station located south of the structure records atmospheric conditions. Results indicate that moderate rain events can caused up to a 23% increase in the system’s thermal exchange capacity. This change is due to the increase in moisture content near the surface, which penetrates to deeper soil layers with time. The time required for moisture to penetrate to greater depths and then dissipate in the soil matrix, explains why increased system performance is seen for over a week following the passing of a singular rain event. 1 INTRODUCTION With a “future-forward” focus, there is an ever-pressing economic and environmental need to use sustainable sources to meet growing energy needs. HVAC is typically responsible for 34% of the overall energy required by commercial buildings and 48% of the energy required by residential buildings (USEIA, 2009; USEIA, 2012). Energy piles are a low cost, sustainable technology that have been used to offset this energy demand incurred by a building’s space heating and air conditioning requirements. An energy pile consists of heat exchanging elements in a closed loop system integrated into a building foundation and connected to a ground source heat pump (GSHP). It is most common for these heat- exchanging elements to be constructed within a drilled shaft foundation due to both construction practices and geometric considerations. This system operates based on the principle that at a certain depth below ground (typically 4 meters) subterranean temperature remains constant at a value equal to the mean annual air temperature at a given location (Kavanaugh et al., 1997). This allows the soil to function as a heat sink for cooling operations and a heat source for heating operations when exchanged within this zone of relatively constant temperature. For the past 25 years, the implementation of energy pile technology in public, residential, and even large-scale architectural complexes has slowly expanded which has created an increase in research into the topic as a result (Brandl, 2006; Hamada, 2007; Sekine et al., 2007; Gao, 2008; Bourne-Webb, 2009; Stewart and McCartney, 2013; Murphy et al., 2014). When pile construction takes place beneath the groundwater table, soil is under fully saturated conditions, maximizing thermal exchange for a GSHP system. Under unsaturated conditions, however, changing moisture contents change thermal conductivity values in a soil, which affect a GSHP system’s ability to meet a thermal demand. The observational data presented in this paper apply to GSHP systems in unsaturated soil conditions.

A recoverable uranium resource, shown to be suitable for in situ leaching, was discovered at Honeymoon in South Australia in 1971. Exploration of the deposit was carried out during the period from 1973 to 1979. Uranium mineralisation occurs in a coarse-grained unconsolidated sand aquifer located in the Yarramba Palaeochannel at a depth of approximately 110 m. Following initial development during 1979 to 1983 and the construction of demonstration leach facilities, the Project was put on hold. Southern Cross Resources purchased the Project in 1997. Government approval was received in March 1998 for the operation of on-site demonstration leach and recovery facilities while an Environmental Impact Statement was prepared and a 1000 tpa commercial production plant was designed. The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was released in June 2000 and operation of the test facility was completed in August 2000. Acceptance of the EIS by Commonwealth and South Australian state governments was announced on 20 November 2001. A Mining Lease was granted over the area of the proposed ISL operation on 8 February 2002. Operation of the Project is entirely dependent on using highly saline underground water resources to supply process and human needs. The management of discharge streams from the plant by re-injection was approved. The Honeymoon demonstration plant was the first adaptation of the solvent extraction process to highly saline in situ leach solutions. As such, it incorporated a number of unique operating and installation features. The trial period enabled optimisation of the process chemistry, additives and management and serves as an invaluable base for the proposed plant design and future operation. This paper discusses the nature of the uranium occurrence, the effect of saline water on the leach process and equipment, project design and environmental considerations, the requirements for disposal of discharge streams to minimise the impact on the arid environment and the requirements for rehabilitation following project completion.

Coeur d'Alene Mines Corporation (CDE) is a precious metals mining company. The company's three mining operations are located In Nevada and Idaho. Collectively, these mines (Rochester in Nevada, and the Galena and Coeur In Idaho) produced about 61,000 ounces of gold and more than 7.5 million ounces of silver in 1991. The company is currently planning the development of two major properties; the Fachinal gold-silver project in Chile and the Kensington gold project near Juneau, Alaska. Fachinal and Kensington hold encouraging potential to significantly expand CDE's gold production during this decade. The permitting process for these two distinctly contrasting environmental settings, project design requirements and regulatory/political circumstances provide the basis for a comparative analysis of licensing and permitting requirements, timeliness of the permitting process and costs in the U.S. and Chile.

The lining of the tunnel and shafts for a new section of New York City's- water system required extensive components to produce, deliver and place a continuous tunnel linning. The project placed approximately 153,000 CM (200,000 cy) of concrete for 5,340 M (17,520) of drill and blast 7.3 M (24 ft.) ID tunnel, located at depths of 152 M (500 ft.) to 213 M (700 ft.) . This section of tunnel will be connected to the surface water distribution system via four shafts of varying diameters ranging from 5.8 M (19 ft.) ID to 1.5 M (5 ft.) ID . All work was done beneath the streets of Manhattan under the rigid constraints of the City of New York and the Bureau of Water Supply regulations.

The Duluth Gabbro Complex in Northeastern Minnesota possibly contains a significant domestic copper resource and the nation's largest nickel resource. Exploration has discovered large low-grade copper-nickel (Cu-Ni) deposits between Hoyt Lakes and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA). The mining and processing of Cu-Ni will have environmental, economic, and social impacts. The purpose of this study is to relate major environmental, economic, and social considerations to various aspects of Cu-Ni extraction. An open pit and two underground (block caving and open stoping with backfilling) models were developed to generate information on the impact of Cu-Ni extraction. Important considerations having environmental, economic, and social impacts (luring various aspects of Cu-Ni extraction are identified and defined. These aspects are exploration, development, mining, beneficiating, smelting, transportation, and termination of operations. Considerations are grouped into the general categories of site, industrial, energy, climatic, resource, water, air emission, waste disposal, employee, tax and royalty, transportation, and community considerations. Cu-Ni extraction in Northeastern Minnesota presents major environmental, economic, and social risks. Decisions are required on trade-offs between adverse and beneficial impacts. The approach used in this study assists in assessing environmental, economic, and social impacts. It will aid in the examination of potential and projected short-term and long-term advantages and disadvantages and will aid in the development of Minnesota's Cu-Ni resource for the maximum benefit to society.

"As mining reserves continue to be developed in deeper and more complex geological and geometric conditions, there has been an increased demand for underground mine designs to better reflect site-specific conditions, measurements, and observations with respect to ground control safety and stability. Current ground control design software are limited to a given device and data files generated can only contain a single design. However, with the growth of cloud computing and increases in internet access, even underground where permissible, web-based software applications allow for in-the-field calculations, as well as collaborations, from multiple users. webGroundControl (webGC) utilizes a multiple-tier architecture, building upon existing NIOSH ground control design software, more specifically ARBS, ALPS, and ARMPS. By providing operators the ability to access ground control design programs from any device, given an internet connection, webGC allows for on demand calculations to ensure underground pillar and roof stabilities with respect to current site-specific parameters, geometries, and geology. Through the development of new features, which aid in design analyses, as well as project collaborations, webGC provides the modern engineer with a more versatile ground control design tool for the improvement of underground health and safety. With the completion of the ARBS, ALPS, and ARMPS modules, this paper introduces potential users within the mining industry to the navigation and operation of the webGC application, as well as its ability to facilitate collaborations between operational personnel and planning engineers. The purpose of this paper is to raise interest in the web-based application before its official launch in Summer 2018."

The acid rock drainage (ARD) buffering capacity of mine waste is governed by its bulk chemical composition and its mineral assemblage. Conventional acid base accounting (ABA) tests can be used to predict short-term buffering, but should be used with caution to model or predict the long-term ARD buffering capacity of mine waste. ABA data for mine waste samples from four different deposit types: an orthosite-hosted magmatic sul?de nickel, dunite-hosted magmatic sul?denickel, porphyry copper-gold, and volcanic-hosted high sul?dation epithermal silver, were compared with whole-rock geochemical and petrographic data obtained from the same samples. Our objective was to devise and test a method of predicting ARD buffering capacity based on bulk chemistry and modal mineralogy. In other words, we developed a quantitative theoretical method for calculating neutralizing potential, relying on easily obtainable and relatively inexpensive whole-rock and sulfur XRF analyses, which could substitute for conventional ABA procedures in situations where these procedures are either too costly or too time consuming. For each deposit type, models were devised that reasonably approximate the net neutralization potential estimated by the ABA data obtained from laboratory tests. Once an appropriate model has been developed and tested, portable X-ray ?uorescence equipment, already used for grade control at many mine sites, could provide the whole-rock and sulfur analyses required to estimate the ARD potential of the waste material. Although this approach is not intended as a substitute for the legally mandated ABA test procedure, it could facilitate the timely and cost-effective management and mitigation of ARD at a mine site.

The transformation of an open pit coal mine to a horizontal-punch underground mine is subject to a number of challenges. These include scheduling the operation of various sizes of trucks over a long period, as well as updating delivery routes and dump site locations as the mine transformation progresses. In this process, rock is excavated from a quarry through earthworks. The bulk earthwork and quarry material delivery were initially drawn from traditional planning and experienced issues in their early phases. As a result, a traffic simulator was developed in order to validate schedules and predict achievable throughput, likely delays or blockages in the long term. The dynamic traffic simulator was also used to provide traffic density and vehicle arrival data at selected intersections in order to identify possible safety and efficiency issues.

"Following heavy rains in spring of 2014, Prince George’s County officials issued a mandatory evacuation for homes in the Piscataway Hills subdivision of Fort Washington, Maryland where a landslide along a 1700-foot hillside destabilized homes, collapsed the single access road, and resulted in water and sewer mains break. Forensic investigations, including geologic assessments, test borings and in-situ Cone Penetrometer and Dilatometer soundings, were performed to evaluate subsurface conditions and provide stabilization options for the roadway and slopes. Post-failure ground movements were monitored using inclinometers. Critical failure planes were identified within the underlying 30-foot thick Marlboro Clay formation, a known geologic hazard with historic occurrences of landslides and slope failures.This paper discusses the remedial design for stabilizing the landslide and 60-foot hillside slope failure, and protecting the roadway. Amongst several feasible options, driven piles were selected in consultation with the County and retained contractor based on cost, environmental impacts and site constraints. Constraints included private ownership of hillside slope, upslope buildings safety; deep-seated failure, relocation of underground water and sewer mains, and accelerated construction schedule.Pile design included global slope stability analyses and lateral pile analyses using several loading configurations to optimize pile geometry and spacing, and determine a value-engineered design satisfying both serviceability and strength limit states to achieve long-term stability with factor of safety of 1.3. Soils within the active landslide plane were assumed to provide no resistance, while soils below the failure plane provided lateral resistance. This stabilization scheme, which extended along the 1700-foot roadway section and toe of hillside slope area, consisted of 410 steel HP16x141 piles in two to three rows driven to depths between 60 and 70 feet below the Marlboro Clay stratum at 5 to 7-foot spacing."

A new kind of mixed chelate collector was prepared in order to separate gangue (mainly quartz) and iron minerals efficiently during room temperature. The collector was was composed of two chelate collectors DES and DA. Floatation tests were carried out under 28?C with mixed magnetic concentrates of Donganshan sintering plant, and optimal test conditions were obtained, in which a direct floatation was undertaken and then a close circuit reverse floatation tests ( one roughing, one cleaning, and two scavenging), and a result of Fe grade of siderite concentrate 36.49%, Fe recovery of siderite concentrate 10.65%, Fe grade of final concentrate 66.27%, Fe recovery of final concentrate 78.25%, and Fe grade of tailing 16.22% was gained. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectra and Zeta potential of siderite and quartz adsorbed the DES and DA collectors before and after were measured in order to analyze the reaction between the collector and minerals. Furthermore, Molecule electronegativity of DES and DA was calculated by Electronegativity Proportionality Principle (EPP). Results showed that DES molecules have five active adsorbing sites and their molecule electronegativity was stronger while DA molecules have three active adsorbing sites, which all make the mixed collector has efficiently collecting performance. Zeta potential results of Quartz and siderite showed that at pH 11.5 both kinds of particles charged negative and at this pH value the mixed collector were mainly anionic collectors which indicate that electrostatic adsorption does not exist at this situation. FTIR results showed that characteristic peaks of the mixed collector changed before and after adsorption with the minerals, which means that there exists chemical adsorption or hydrogen bonding.

Directionally solidified (DS) Rene 80 Superalloy was tested in thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) over the temperature range 500-900°C and plastic strain levels from 0.2 to 0.8% using a DSI Gleeble thermal simulator. Thermo-mechanical testing was carried out on the parent material in the conventional solution treated and aged condition (STA), as well as gas tungsten arc welded with an IN-738 filler, followed by solution treatment and ageing. Comparison of the base TMF unwelded alloy with that of the welded and heat treated alloy showed that varying crack initiation mechanisms, notably oxidation either by stress assisted grain boundary oxidation, or associated with grain boundary MC carbides fatigue crack propagation along grain boundaries and creep deformation were operating, leading to different "weakest link" failure initiation points.

This Workshop was held at the Doubletree Inn, Seattle, Washington from September 26 to 28, 1997. Run under the auspices of the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI), it was co-funded by the newly formed Japanese Association of Micropiles (JAMP), and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The Workshop was jointly organized and facilitated by Fujita Research Corporation and ECO Geosystems, Inc., with close support by Donald B. Murphy Contractors, Inc. DFI kindly consented to publish these Proceedings. As is clear from the list of attendees, 42 specially invited engineers from all aspects of micropile technology were present, representing Japanese, European and American practice. This proved to be a most friendly and interactive group of people, who freely exchanged ideas, views and close comradeship, not only during the technical sessions, but (and especially!) during the numerous social events. Perhaps the best illustration of this came in Day 2 when the attendees were divided into five competing teams, each comprising representatives from the different geographic groupings. These teams had to quickly devise solutions to two technical problems (using standard data previously provided. A team of "referees" (who also acted as "coaches") later determined the most apposite response, based on constructability design concept, cost, schedule and so on. Not only were the winning team very liberal in distributing the prize (vintage California champagne) among themselves, but the whole Workshop soon benefited from their generous division of the spoils of victory.

The Sherritt Fort Site nickel refinery and fertilizer plant has been operating continuously since 1954. The ammonia leach process uses ammonia and sulphuric acid, producing nickel and cobalt and an ammonium sulphate byproduct. One of the features of an ammonium sulphate based process is the aggressive nature of ammonium sulphate to concrete and structural steel. After six decades of operation, portions of the structural steel and concrete at the Sherritt facility have become degraded. Infrastructure replacement programs started in earnest more than a decade ago with pipe racks and electrical infrastructure, and have now progressed into building steel. Replacing and repairing this infrastructure within the tight constraints of an operating plant poses several difficult challenges. This paper will outline the approach taken to accomplish this difficult work, and discuss key learnings from the ongoing program.

In 2015, Ernst and Young (EY) ranked socio-political license to operate (SPLTO) as the fifth greatest challenge to the mining sector (EY, 2015). The EY report asserts that SPLTO will continue to present a risk to the mining sector in the context of ‘increased activism, digitally connected stakeholders and politicians who need to respond to general consensus’. While there is no consensus on a definition, SPLTO is commonly regarded as the ongoing acceptance or approval of an operation by affected stakeholders (Moffat and Zhang, 2014; Thomson and Joyce, 2008) as well as those stakeholders that can affect the operation (Graafland, 2002). Warhurst (2001) relates the process of stakeholders granting SPLTO to the establishment of meaningful partnerships between operations, communities and government based on a variety of factors that build trust between stakeholders.From these accounts, we can see that understanding stakeholder attitudes about company performance and impacts on stakeholders directly affected by an operation are important in any attempts to measure SPLTO. Understanding the level of acceptance of an operation within these stakeholders provides a good proxy or outcome measure of SPLTO. Moreover, trust seems to be a central variable in the translation of these experiences of an operation into acceptance. What the mine or company does, its behaviour, degrades or builds trust with stakeholders, and this then affects acceptance (Moffat and Zhang, 2014).In addition, a strong emphasis is placed on the nature of the relationship between companies and stakeholders as influenced by inter-group interactions. It is not just what companies do well or poorly with respect to environmental impacts, for example, that will determine trust and acceptance, but how the company relates to its stakeholders at personal and group levels.These relationships between communities of stakeholders and extractive companies are dynamic. Brown and Fraser (2006) recognised the importance of industry being able to respond to the changing nature of societal approval and acceptance, arguing that ‘business must have regard for evolving social attitudes and expectations if it is to maintain its ‘social licence’’.This paper will describe a series of five pilot projects conducted by CSIRO with Anglo American in Australia and South Africa to generate a real-time understanding of SPLTO to guide more reflexive and effective social performance strategies.CITATION:Moffat, K, Boughen, N, Brooks, L and Zhang, A, 2016. Simulation techniques have offered significant boosts toward a cost-and-time-optimized planning of construction projects by enabling project managers to effectively comprehend the behavior of projects. Using historic data from projects of like nature, simulation considers uncertainties involved in a project through accommodating the stochastic modeling parameters. However, the heavy reliance on the statistical data and not taking into account the context-specific features of the project cause the degradation in the realism and accuracy of the simulation models. Similarly, the extent to which a historic pattern could be retrofitted to new projects will decrease in line with the growing uniqueness of the projects and the novelty of construction methods. Furthermore, the existing real-time simulation frameworks are not capable of distinguishing the transient environmental changes, with minimal long-term impacts on the productivity, from the influential changes that will greatly impact an operation. In addition, existing simulation tools are devoid of location awareness, resulting in the inability to consider safety threats in their representation of the project. To address these issues, this research proposes a framework based on the integration of new tracking technologies used in Automated Machine Guidance (AMG) with simulation-driven 4D modeling methods. The proposed framework automates the adjustment of the simulation model based on the updated data from the site, and thus transforms simulation from a predictive tool used at the planning phase to a proactive monitoring platform usable throughout the planning and construction phases. A prototype is developed to test and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
