Traditional loading systems have relied for many years on wheel and track loaders, power shovels, conveyor belts, and more recently, hydraulic front shovels. Each has certain advantages and disadvantages, depending largely on job conditions. Hydraulic backhoes were introduced several years ago as still another truck loading option. At first, buckets were small and backhoe use was limited to small earthmoving projects. Now, as backhoes are equipped with shorter sticks and bigger buckets to move larger quantities of earth. The "mass excavation" concept offers an excellent truck loading option in many situations. System Development and Advantages Mass excavation was first used successfully by contractors in site development and highway construction, loading both on-highway and off-highway trucks. Operators were able to take advantage of the excavator's ability to work in poor underfoot conditions and dig in tough materials. The technique was first applied to mining in the kaolin mines of central Georgia. Kaolin, one of the world's most abundant minerals, is used to make paper, paint, ceramics, rubber, plastics, and many other products. Since kaolin clay is slippery when wet, load-out with wheel loaders is very inefficient. Also, kaolin is found in very spotty deposits due to the weathering process involved in its formation. Consequently, draglines are also impractical for kaolin mining since they don't have the mobility to move between clay deposits. In response to these mining conditions and kaolin characteristics, mines began using excavators in mass excavation as early as 1976. They have developed a system that takes advantage of the excavator's •high penetration and breakout force in tight materials; •fast-cycling hydraulics; •ability to work in poor underfoot conditions; and •mobility in comparison to draglines. This loading method has been successful in Georgia's kaolin mines and now can be applied to other mining operations as well. Silver ore was discovered at Aspen in 1879, but the district did not reach full production until 1888 after lawsuits were settled and railroads furnished less expensive transportation to the outside world. The boom years were 1888-92; production declined thereafter. From the middle 1920's until 1950, the Midnight mine in the Richmond Hill district furnished most of the output in the Aspen quadrangle. Since 1950, little mining has been done at Aspen. The metals produced were silver, lead and zinc. Native silver dissolved from the sulfide ores was redeposited by waters circulating as deep as 300 m below the land surface, resulting in great secondary enrichment of many of the deposits. Over 100 million ounces of silver were produced in the Aspen quadrangle. Low-grade lead-zinc deposits remain between the old workings locally, and data available suggest that primary ore below levels mined is also of low grade. The ore occurs in the Mississippian Leadville Limestone and the lower part of the Pennsylvanian Belden Formation in sites that were made favorable for deposition by a number of stratigraphic and structural factors.

"In February 1980, Dome Mines Limited announced a $50 million expansion program which would result in a 50% increase in mill capacity from the present 1,815 tonnes per day to an eventual production rate of 2, 720 tonnes per day in the year 1984. As an integral and necessary part of this planned expansion, a new vertical production shaft, No. 8 Shaft, would be sunk from surface to a depth of 1,645 metres.Throughout the seventy-year history of mining at the Dome, gold has been found in a number of different rock types and in association with a number of different structural settings. However, the key to successfully locating ore deposits lies in the recognition of the favourable environments in which they generally occur. First and foremost, the exercise of locating the No. 8 shaft became an exercise in geological deduction based on the projection of these favourable lithologic environments.In November 1980, after detailed engineering work was completed, the total cost of the project was estimated at $75.5 million 1980 dollars or $91 million dollars allowing for inflation over a four-year construction period. These estimates include the shaft, significant replacement and alterations to the milling process, and an upgrading of the plant."

This report describes the results of a program to design, procure, install, and evaluate a multi-channel underground telephone system of modern design in the Sunshine Silver Mine near Wallace, Idaho. Although the evaluation portion of the program was deleted, this report contains a cost benefit analysis for such a system using estimates of operational data for the Sunshine Mine. The results show a centrally switched telephone system of conventional design with ruggedized phone enclosures and special environmentally sealed dial pads to be the most economical.

Geochemical studies were under- taken in the Breckenridge mining district to test the effectiveness of soil and rock-chip samples in high- lighting known mineralization in the district, and in locating sites of possible porphyry-type mineralization, if such mineralization is present in the area. Soil sampling can be done more quickly and more cheaply, but it does not provide a direct site- specific sample of mineralized rock. In well-developed soils, supergene effects may mask and/or displace primary hypogene effects; and even in places where the soils are poorly- developed, as in the Breckenridge district, the masking effects may be felt. Soil anomalies, if present, likely will be of lower amplitude and more diffuse (widespread) than corresponding rock-chip anomalies. On the other hand, detailed rock-chip surveys are more time-consuming and expensive, even though they yield direct geologic information in addition to the chemical data. The goals of the combined soil and rock-chip programs were (1) to com- pare the data from the two; and (2) test the effectiveness in identifying significant chemical anomalies with respect to the geology of the district, as it is presently understood.

Geological differences among various coalfields restrain the applicability of subsidence prediction using existing European methods. To modify these methods for domestic conditions, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, developed a method of assessment to evaluate the lithological effects on subsidence in the Northern Appalachian basin by examining data collected from 16 longwall panels in the coalfield. The assessment is partially completed, and the results to date show that the ratio of maximum subsidence to the extraction thickness, known as the subsidence factor, can be expressed in terms of the width-to-depth ratio by a simple exponential equation which has a coefficient tentatively considered as the subsidence index. This index varies with the lithology of a particular site and can be expressed in terms of the percent distribution of weak and strong rocks in the overburden.

This Bureau of Mines publication comprises a compilation of the state of the science in Pacific Ocean manganese nodule mineralogy and elermental composition. The report is divided into three sections: morphology, mineralogy and elemental composition. The nodule morphology section defines what is considered a nodule for the study, and details the external characteristics and internal structure. Nodule mineralogy is discussed in three sections: manganese minerals, iron oxide minerals, and accessory minerals. The major manganese minerals discussed are todorokite, birnessite, and vernadite. The iron oxide minerals are less well known and include feroxyhyte, goethite, and lepidocrocite. Accessory minerals present include quartz, clays, and other silicates and nonsilicates. A discussion on moisture content is also included. The elemental composition section presents data on 74 elements occurring as cations or anions. Summary data, histograms, and interelement correlation coefficients are presented. The elements are grouped as follows: major and minor elements of potential economic interest (8), other major and minor elements (9), elements of environmental interest (8), rare-earth elements (15), precious-metal-group elements (6), radioactive elements (3), other trace elements (17), and anion-forming elements (8). Cross sectional determinations of Ni, Cu, Zn, Co, Pb, Fe, Ce, and Ba are given for a single nodule to show the general tendency of different growth patterns within a nodule because of different element associations and composition.

The efficient operation of large haul trucks in large open pit mines requires an economic trade off between the haul route quality, the haul truck payloads and the level of haul truck reliability. This paper describes an investigation into the relation- ship between haul route surface quality and the level of structural reliability of a haul truck main frame. An instrumentation system for unattended recording of data on a haul truck operating normally in a mine and com- puter based analytical procedures were developed and used to identify which road segments contribute significantly to fatigue cracking at various sections of a haul truck main frame. INTRODUCTION In many open pit mines there is exten- sive use of large haul trucks to move over- burden and minerals. In most open pit hard rock mines, both the overburden and mineral ore are moved by large rear dump type haul trucks. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to degasify a virgin block of coal in the Beckley Coalbed using long horizontal holes drilled in an array from the bottom of a ventilation air shaft. Eight horizontal holes and an in situ pressure hole were drilled in a radial pattern to depths ranging from 418 to 910 ft (127 to 277 m) and 205 ft (62 m), respectively. The investigation showed the shaft was in a basin saturated with water, which resulted in low gas flows from holes. The in situ pressure at 200 ft (61 m) into the coalbed was 79 psig (544.6 KN/m2). The aver- age gas and water flows for the eight holes were 94,100 ft3/day (2,665 m3/day) and 13 gal/min (49.3 l/min) . After 514 days of degasification, 18.7 million ft3 (0.53 million m3) of gas had been drained. Methane face emissions, which were measured as a section advanced toward the shaft, were reduced about 77 pct, emphasizing the value of drainage by this technique. All holes were grouted before the area around the shaft was mined.

Earth resistivity surveys using the Wenner electrode configuration were made in unmined areas and reclaimed spoils at three surface lignite mines in western North Dakota. The study sites were the Center, Indian Head, and Falkirk Mines. Automatic interpretation of the curves was accomplished with the method of Zohdy and Bisdorf (1975). Overburden materials become more homogeneous with respect to resistivity during the mining and reclamation process. The spoils curves show localized hetero-geneities probably related to discontinuous moisture content variations in the spoils. Consistent resistivity differences in spoils occur between mines with over-burdens of different mineralogic compositions. Groundwater chemical composition in terms of total-dissolved-solids (TDS) is inversely correlated (r=-0.61) with apparent resistivity at the 80-foot spacing from a survey centered at a piezometer screened near the base of the spoils. Better inverse correlation is probably pre-vented by high variability in TDS within the spoils groundwater. A useful predictive relationship may be the plot of mean apparent resistivity at the 80-foot spacing for ar. entire mine against mean TDS for all wells in spoils at that mine. Data from more mines are needed to test the hypothesis.

A differential flotation process for recovery of molybdenite from chalcopyrite concentrates produced at Rakha Copper Concentrator, Bihar, India has been developed. The flowsheet is simple, and relatively inexpensive and yields a concentrate assaying not less than 45% Mo at a recovery of minimum 65%, starting from chalcopyrite concentrate assaying 0.4% Mo. The consumption of the main depressant used, sodium sulphide is not more than 25 kg/t of copper concentrate processed without steaming; and with steaming the consumption was brought dorm to less than 12 kg/t of concentrate. Further reduction is possible by optimization of steaming parameters. Based on laboratory experimental results, further tests were conducted on concentrator site and process design parameters were established for design of commercial plant.

This is a progress report summarizing more than 5 years of a long-range Bureau of Mines research program. The purpose of this program has been to investigate the fire and explosion properties of Green River oil shale in the Bureau's Experimental Mine, in laboratories, and in the field. The lean limits of explosibility of oil shale dust, by small-and large-scale tests, are reported as a function of grade, ignition source, and particle size. A limited number of laboratory tests on the autoignition of oil shale dust layers and the spontaneous combustion tendencies of oil shale are described. Moderate-scale rubble fire tests were conducted to determine flame spread rates as a function of ventilation flow. With the aid of a system to continuously monitor methane emissions in a deep oil shale mine, the characteristics of the methane flow are reported as a function of ventilation and blasting procedures, and are compared with gas yields from core samples. Tentative predictions as to the emission of the methane to be expected in deep oil shale mines, far from the outcrop, are offered. Brief reference is made to a parallel investigation into the fire and explosion hazards of oil shale mining and processing by a Bureau contractor; detailed results of the latter investigation are to be found in the contractor's reports.

This Bureau of Mines report describes calcination of kaolinitic clay in a direct-fired 2-1/2- by 24-ft rotary kiln at 750° and 775° C. Methods for preparing kaolin feed materials and characterization of calcined products are discussed. Approximately 99 pct of the alumina in a typical eastern Georgia kaolin was soluble in HC1 after calcination at either 750° or 775° C.

A survey of the literature on ELF and VLF atmospheric noise has been made. Most measurements have concentrated on the vertical electric field and the horizontal magnetic field rather than the vertical magnetic field which is of interest in transmission between horizontal loops. The limited vertical magnetic field data indicates that the vertical component is generally 10 to 20 dB below the horizontal component. Three laterally inhomogeneous earth models have been analyzed for conversion of horizontal to vertical magnetic field. The rough surface model examines surface effects, the inhomogeneous thin sheet model treats volume effects, and the buried cylinder model treats localized man-made effects. All three models predict the possibility of significant conversion from horizontal to vertical magnetic field. A thin sheet model has also been used to examine transmission from a buried magnetic dipole source. It is found that the predicted fields more nearly model the measured data than does the homogeneous half-space model.

This paper will be a general discussion of surface flooding considerations as they affect mining facilities site selection, based primarily on experience with several such problems with which MSHA's Bruceton Technical Support staff has been involved. The detailed analytical procedures used in arriving at engineering solutions of these problems will not he presented here; the emphasis is on drawing attention to this additional aspect of mine design which hitherto has been largely overlooked due to insufficient awareness, information and criteria. The paper's purpose is to stimulate thought and offer guidance concerning the selection of sites for mining facilities in light of the potential for flooding problems caused by surface waters. Flooding by surface waters, would generally not be a serious consideration in areas of relatively low topographical relief, i.e. flat lands, although there are exceptions to this rule, for example, in Western areas where flash flooding is a major concern. Therefore, this discussion will mainly apply to areas where the severity of surface flooding would be amplified by the topography-large, well defined watersheds of considerable relief, i.e. mountainous areas. In these regions, steep valley walls cause any rainfall to flow quickly into the relatively narrow valley bottoms. These valley bottoms provide little flow area during storm conditions, so deep and rapidly flowing streams result.

The application of simulation to production planning at a large, complex open-pit mining operation proved to be challenging and enlightening. The mine is divided into two separate pits and several dump areas which are served by the same truck fleet. The operating system consisted of shovels of two different sizes, wheel loaders, and a fleet of three different truck types moving material from seven source locations to ten dumping sites. The interconnecting haulroad network included many common segments. There were operating constraints unique to the system, such as: traffic rules; manpower limitations; shovel, material-type, and destination priorities and production limitations; and a unique, non-centralized dispatching method for truck distribution. The truck distribution was further constrained by the matching of trucks to shovels, loaders, and destinations by truck type. The gathering and transformation of input data as well as the evaluation of results and validation of the model were also challenging. Despite a high level of sophistication in production reporting, some input data were neither readily available nor backed by field observation. As a result, many innovative techniques had to be used to develop realistic input data and to validate the simulation results. Nevertheless, this case study definitely proved the feasibility of applying computer simulation techniques to short and long range mine planning and budgeting at a large, complex mining operation.

"Between 1934 and 1956, nearly 31 million grams of gold were produced in the Matachewan area from deposits on properties belonging to Young-Davidson Mines Limited and Matachewan Consolidated Mines Limited. In 1979, production from these properties was renewed by Pamour Porcupine Mines Limited.Most of the gold produced has come from relatively lowgrade deposits (3.4 gl t or less) that occur in an east-trending belt of dykes and irregular bodies of trachytic syenite. Although small by comparison, these deposits have some of the characteristics of porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits. The mineralized syenite contains up to 5 per cent disseminated pyrite and is highly fractured and cut by quartz and quartzcarbonate veinlets. Gold occurs as native gold along fractures, in quartz veinlets and as minute inclusions in pyrite. Minor chalcopyrite and trace amounts of scheelite, molybdenite and galena are also present. Mineralization was accompanied by potassic alteration, consisting mainly of potassium feldspar.Some gold was also produced from small, but higher-grade, deposits in volcanic rocks. These deposits occur near the syenite-hosted deposits and consist of quartz veins and stringers mineralized .with pyrite and gold. Minor gold is present in some low-grade, porphyry-type copper-molybdenum occurrences and, locally, in large, isolated quartz veins.Lead isotope analyses suggest that the gold deposits were formed at about 2700 Ma and were locally remobilized at approximately 2400 Ma, following the Kenoran orogeny. The deposits appear to be genetically related to felsic magmas emplaced in an epizonal environment and deposited from hydrothermal solutions relatively concentrated in S and K20."

Nitrogenase activity (C2H2 reduction) was found to be associated with the following grasses in the field: Agropyron dasystachyum, Agropyron smithii, Aristida purpurea, Oryzopsis hymenoides and Stipa comata. Uptake of fixed nitrogen was also demonstrated for these grasses. Two unidentified nitrogen fixing bacteria were isolated, one from Stipa comata and one from Aristida purpurea. Cynodon dactylon and Agropyron cristatum were successfully inoculated with the unknown isolate obtained from Stipa comata. The inoculated plants exhibited nitrogenase activity (C2 H2 reduction) whereas uninoculated controls gave negative results.
