The recycling of steel is a crucial aspect of the shift toward a sustainable metals industry. The emphasis on steel recycling through the introduction of the scrap based mini-mill concept is also matched with a desire for greater product quality and reduced environmental impact, which, in turn, has generated important innovations. There have been significant advances in the technology for recycling steel over the last 20 years and this paper will provide an overview of these developments and discuss future directions in steel recycling including scrap management, control of tramp elements, electric arc furnace technology and ladle metallurgy.

The discovery and delineation of significant mineralisation in the Eliwana region continues Fortescue Metals Group’s strong exploration success. In the decade after the first hole was drilled into Christmas Creek in mid-2004 a total of over 11 Bt of hematite-goethite mineralisation have been delineated supporting the raising of $13 B, construction of five mines, 620 km of rail and a five-berth port. As of June 2014, Fortescue was shipping at the rate of 155 Mt/a. The area including the Eliwana and Flying Fish deposits is one of a number of future growth opportunities that Fortescue is currently evaluating.The Eliwana and Flying Fish deposits occur on the south dipping limb of the Brockman Syncline/Jeerinah Anticline. The Eliwana group of deposits are hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation with the Flying Fish/Broadway group hosted by the Marra Mamba Iron Formation.Structurally the area is dominated by moderate southerly dips of the regional dome and keel style folding. The regional limb is locally cross-cut at a small angle by asymmetric north facing Ophthalmian folds trending 110°. These fold sets, in part, preferentially host subsequent supergene mineralisation. Faulting is only locally apparent.Early phases of exploration commenced in 2006, with mapping of Flying Fish and reconnaissance drilling in 2007. However, due to the concurrent discovery (Clarke et al, 2009) and subsequent fast tracked development of Solomon channel iron deposit and Firetail bedded iron deposit (Simpson et al, 2011) priority was placed on developing Solomon due to its relative proximity to existing Fortescue infrastructure. Staged follow-up drilling of both Marra Mamba and Brockman targets at Eliwana was progressively undertaken from 2008 onward.As of 20 May 2014 a total of 1494 reverse circulation (RC) holes for 54 248 m and 13 diamond holes had been completed, resulting in the delineation of a Mineral Resource of 740 Mt. Three principal features of the ore at Captain's Flat, New South Wales, tend to complicate concentration of the valuable minerals, these being:1. The ore occurs in three more or less separate bodies which vary in texture and mineral ratios. Mining of constant proportions of the three sections, or adequate blending of the ore, is not fully effective, and consequently the flotation section is subjected to feedof varying texture.2. The mineral association in the heavily pyritic ore is extremely intimate. Composite particles exist even at 20 micron sizeI, and probably finer.3. The copper content of the ore averages_about 0,6%, which is high enough to justify recovery of the chalcopyrite in a separate concentrate. A review of the metallurgical history of the mine shows that this feature has been the cause of the several major changes in flowsheet of the flotation section since the commencement of milling.METALLURGICAL HISTORYThe mine started production in January 1939, at the rate of 250 tons per day of sulphide ore, assaying 0·68% Cu, 6·52% Pb, 10·8% Zn, and about 1 dwt. The Dinkidi Cu-Au porphyry deposit is situated in the Caraballo Range of North Luzon, Philippines. Although comparatively small, Dinkidi has unusually high gold grades with drilling by Climax-Arimco Mining Corporation delineating a 110 Mt orebody at 1.2 g/t gold and 0.5 per cent copper. The magmatic-hydrothermal evolution of Dinkidi records a distinctive switch in mineralisation from an early orthoclase-dominated Au-rich assemblage, typical of alkaline porphyry systems, to a later quartz stockwork Au-Cu rich assemblage typical of most calc-alkaline to shoshonitic porphyry systems. The early orthoclase-dominated stage is associated with the intrusion and crystallisation of a variably-textured clinopyroxene-syenite dyke that contains high-grade (5 - 20 g/t) gold mineralisation. We consider this dyke to be a Cu-Au porphyry analogue to the pegmatites found in granitic systems. Dinkidi is hosted within the Early Miocene Didipio Igneous Complex. This alkaline igneous complex is comprised of early unmineralised gabbros (pyroxene-plagioclase cumulates), clinopyroxenites (pyroxene cummulates), diorites and monzodiorites that have been intruded by a large, weakly mineralised monzonite pluton. The Dinkidi deposit is located at the southern margin of the monzonite pluton. Mineralisation is hosted within a composite monzonite stock. Within the stock, an 800 metres by ~200 metres (plan section) elongate monzonite stock (Tunja Monzonite) predates and hosts the bulk of the Au-Cu mineralisation. This has been intruded by the thin (10 to 30 m wide), highly mineralised variably-textured magnetite- and clinopyroxene- phyric syenite pegmatite (the Balut Dyke). The youngest phases of the composite stock are leucocratic quartz-monzonite porphyry (Quan Porphyry) that grades texturally, in its core, into a post-mineralisation crystal-crowded quartz-syenite (Bufu Felsite). The late-stage Bufu Felsite is inferred to be the source of much of the Cu-Au mineralisation. The Didipio Igneous Complex has intruded a sequence of Late Oligocene alkaline andesitic lavas and volcaniclastics and overlying potassic dacitic lavas. Whole rock geochemical analyses indicate that the intrusions and the potassic dacite lavas in the surrounding region are co-magmatic. Five main stages of hydrothermal activity are recorded at Dinkidi. An unmineralised K-silicate (biotite-magnetite) alteration assemblage formed during the intrusion of the Tunja Monzonite stock. The diorites surrounding the stock display intense selectively pervasive biotite and magnetite alteration and are cut by an extensive network of orthoclase veins and monzonite dykes. The orthoclase-dominated assemblages of Stage Two carry substantial high-grade Au mineralisation and are associated with the intrusion of the Balut Dyke. The emplacement of this unusual dyke is associated with emplacement of pegmatitic clinopyroxene-orthoclase-magnetite¦sulphide dykes, localised orthoclase flooding along the margins of the dyke, and subsequent emplacement of an extensive orthoclase-actinolite-bornite¦chalcopyrite-fluorite stock-work, and development of widespread selectively pervasive actinolite alteration. The main stage of Au-Cu mineralisation at Dinkidi is intimately associated with the intrusion and initial crystallisation of the leuco-monzonite porphyry (Quan Porphyry) and emplacement of a quartz stockwork followed by carbonate-sulphide deposition and intense vein-related sericite and carbonate alteration assemblages. The quartz stockwork formed synchronous with the deposition of the æBugoy QuartzoliteÆ, a very coarse grained mosaic of quartz-orthoclase-perthite along the walls and top of the crystallising intrusion. Stage 3 was terminated by crystallisation of the distinctively vuggy Bufu quartz-syenite phase in the core of the intrusive, with associated antiperthite veins, and the subsequent explosive brecciation of the roof of the intrusion, forming a quartz-fragment breccia from the Bugoy Quartzolite. Retrograde metasomatism during Stage Four was intimately associated with the emplacement of extensive, late-stage carbonate, silica and zeolite veins and widespread selectively pervasive carbonate alteration. The last hydrothermal stage at Dinkidi, Stage 5, is comprised of strong selectively pervasive clay alteration and is associated with fault-related brecciation of the Dinkidi stock.

This paper examines the practical limitations that affect the measurement of stress in rock. As most rock stress measurement is conducted through the invasive process of drilling a hole in a rock mass, the nature of the rock and its response to being drilled form the basis of the stress measurement process. The prime techniques to measure stress down a borehole are to conduct hydraulic fracturing and its variant hydrojacking, overcoring, and the examination of the borehole wall for breakout or tensile fracture. It is also possible in some circumstances to use the sonic velocity within the rock mass as an indicator of the stress situation. Other structural indicators of stress such as joints, faulting and intrusions are useful but may not reflect the current stress situation within the rock mass. The variability of stress within the rock mass also needs to be considered as it is quite unusual to have a monotonic stress situation throughout any rock mass. The outdated concept of measuring the far field stress in a few measurement for use in a numerical model is quite dangerous. It is essential to make multiple measurements and to generate an understanding of its distribution in some form of model before stress can sensibly be incorporated into underground design. "The rise of autonomous haul truck fleets may have been initially driven by the rapid escalation of the cost of equipment operators, but the actual improvements reported by the major iron ore miners far exceeds the simple reduction in workforce. Utilising cost models developed for feasibility studies and mining contract modelling, the limits of cost improvements due to simple labour reductions are compared to those achieved by the early autonomous fleet adopters and through traditional process improvement techniques such as fleet class upgrades or hot-seating of equipment. As autonomous fleet implementation matures, it is likely that the gains seen by current adopters will seem minor compared to the limits generally governed by the limit of equipment utilisation. As an integral part of the conversion from rail haulage to conveyor haulage at Henderson, over six kilometres of drifting and several large complex openings were mined. The deepest of these areas was nearly two kilometres beneath the surface, bringing all of the challenges of rock stress and heat that come with mining at these depths. Though many mines operate at these depths, the development of the infrastructure necessary to support a 36 000 tonne per day caving operation brought some unique challenges to the development mining activity. The issues handled include: finding experienced staff for a æfast trackÆ development program; rock bursts and ground conditions; inflow of 50 degree centigrade water; acceleration of the project completion; large diameter raise boring and difficult muck handling.

The problem of comparison of island arc's andesites in terms of petrochemical data is exa- mined. It is definitely established that only two main factors exist controlling the petroche- mical variety of the Kurile arc's andesites.Ori final multivariate statistical technique and computer software are used to extract these fac- tors. It is shown as well that the chemical com- position of igneous rocks depends on the type and structure of the Earth's crust. The follo- ~cing interpretation is proposed for the two factors describing petrochemistry of andesites: the first one is the depth to the Benioff seis- mofocal zone and the second one is supposed to indicate the position of the peripheral magma chambers. A new high tensile strength, steel cable, that may be grouted into boreholes has been developed for use as rode reinforcement. The manufacturing technique produces a birdcage pattern in which the cross section varies along the length of the cable. The load transfer from cement grouts to birdcage cables has been demonstrated in laboratory tests to be better than that of standard 15.2 mm diameter seven wire cables. The manufacturing process also allows for a wide range of capacities which may be specified by design engineers. The various birdcage cable configurations have been applied as rock reinforcement in a number of Australian underground and surface mines.

Risk Management has been applied relatively slowly in the mining industry. Except for the risk concept application in financial considerations, the application of Risk Management in safety management has been far from satisfactory. When applied it was treated in a global occupational safety and health sense. Regardless of how much the mining industry has progressed over the years it is still, in many respects, `state-of-the-art' business. The safety aspects of mining are well known and yet little understood by the public. Regardless of what has been achieved so far and how much effort has been put into it, mining is regarded as an unsafe and somehow rude business. Safety records of the mining industry vary from State-to-State. Latest mining related disasters in PNG and Queensland and some other fatal accidents support this public perception. They purport a need for change in managing safety in the mining industry. The latest mining fatalities have raised the issue: What must be done to improve safety standards? Duty of care, risk management and system engineering concepts can provide some answers. Risk Management principles which have been advocated for some time provide many answers and explanations and can make safety management more constructive and workable. What has been missing so far is that this concept has neither been applied nor has been modified for its practical application and purpose on a larger scale. A risk management approach to the management of safety and health in the mining industry is addressed, herein. This approach does not attempt to provide the solution. It does, however, provide a basic understanding of what Risk and Risk Management are all about. Rational management of risk is addressed in the life cycle and system contexts. A system of continuous improvement is applied. There is always a chain of events, outcome, exposure, consequence(s), and consequence(s) value(s). It means that development of an event takes place in time and space. Dynamic circumstances have been created in or within the system. It is a decision-making process designed to provide a methodology which is directed not toward a mathematical model but toward easy use and application in dynamic working environment, by decision-makers who can be anybody from either a risk taker or a risk creator. The emphasis is placed not only on arriving at the best practical, possible and fair decision but also on structured and systematic acquisition of knowledge about the system, its hazards and associated risks, hence increasing the decision maker's ability to manage the decision-making process related to the management of risk.

Risk management has become an essential tool for mining companies to ensure their projects are well-managed and profit expectations are achieved. Risk management has also become a mandatory corporate governance requirement in Australia for publicly listed companies and equally important to attract investors. This paper provides a brief overview of the essential tools needed to implement a practical risk management framework to comply with the internationally recognised ISO 31000:2009 risk management-principles and guidelines from the perspective of small or soon to be producing mining companies. To?successfully?deal with the unknown and to manage the opportunities and risks involved with a mining project requires a clear understanding of the basic risk management principles. These include how to develop a project risk register, how to develop a project risk treatment plan and how to manage and monitor project risks to take full advantage of the opportunities presented.The first step is to identify and fully appreciate the risks that face a mining project. There are many risk identification methods that can be used including checklists, brainstorming and hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies. These often lead to a telephone book full of risks which are near to impossible to manage. A risk library specifically designed?for mining?projects containing no more than 100 risks will cover the major showstoppers, is practical and can be readily implemented and successfully managed.A risk framework also needs to be established which is compatible with the companyÆs structure and objectives. Once each risk has been assessed in regard to consequence and likelihood and the risk control systems are in place they need to be assigned to the responsible manager. The extreme or high risks will require a risk treatment plan to be developed. Risks will change during the life cycle of a mining project. This paper outlines the feasibility assessment conducted to explore the possibility of constructing two submarine water supply pipelines beneath the Ma Wan Channel in Hong Kong using either horizontal directional drilling or tunnelling. The Ma Wan Channel is a major shipping channel in the Northwest New Territories, which separates Ma Wan Island from the mainland. The challenges faced by the projectÆs designers included space limitations on either side of the channel, marine department restrictions on construction activity within the channel and selection of a suitable crossing alignment and profile given the channelÆs depth, irregular sea floor topography and complex geology. The existing geological information indicated the proposed alignment would cross granitic and volcanic formations, which would likely be faulted. The primary concerns with horizontal directional drilling were:the length, diameter and depth of the crossing were at the limit of precedent experience in rock; the lack of available space at both the entry and exit sites; and whether the technique would be flexible enough to cope with the anticipated range of ground conditions. The primary concerns for tunnelling were: the possibility of encountering large inflows of high pressure groundwater; andthe possibility of encountering disturbed ground within the fault zones which could flow if not properly treated. As a means to evaluate and mitigate these technical risks for both construction options, a directionally drilled pilot hole was used to investigate the ground conditions along the proposed pipeline alignment. The pilot hole results indicated that either directional drilling or a closed face TBM drive were technically feasible crossing options at a crossing depth of 80 m. The results also indicated that either an open face TBM or a drill blast drive would need to be constructed at much greater depth because of the presence of highly permeable, disturbed ground in mid-channel at this crossing elevation.

The design of near-surface civil infrastructure requires detailed consideration of the geological/ geotechnical conditions, excavation geometry and sequence and ground support measures to ensure stability of the underground openings and minimal impact on overlying or adjacent infrastructure. Twin parallel road tunnels have been designed and built with connecting cross passages and a piggyback busway tunnel as part of a large infrastructure project in Australia. The tunnels were excavated in poor to fair quality rocks using road headers. Temporary ground support includes shotcrete, rock bolts and canopy tubes. Extensive numerical analyses have been performed to analyse the expected behaviour of the tunnels during excavation, including two-dimensional analyses using UDEC and three-dimensional analyses using FLAC3D. Structural defects in the rock are explicitly included in the 2D analyses to examine the potential for localised ground instability. The stress redistribution is captured by the 3D modelling with an accurate representation of the complex excavation geometry and the detailed excavation and support sequence. This paper presents the modelling methodology, numerical results and discussions on integrating both 2D and 3D analyses to achieve reasonable design.

The mainline running tunnels for Legacy Way comprise two tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven tunnels. Both TBM drives commenced at the Launch Portal adjacent the Mt Coot-tha Road. Excessive surface settlement arising from tunnelling would have had a significant impact to the road infrastructure. The geological structure above the tunnel springline is a mixture of fill, residual soil and weak rock. Given the combination of low ground cover and weak ground materials, along with the use of an open face TBM, an oversize pipe umbrella system has been installed above the tunnels. This pipe umbrella system is similar to that commonly adopted in conventional mined excavation support in soft ground except that the steel pipes are substantially larger in geometry and filled with concrete. It is acknowledged that similar systems with oversize pipe umbrella have been adopted elsewhere in the world in other projects. These systems often comprise of a full arch formed by conjoining oversize steel pipes (in contact only). By aligning the pipes in contact, the arching behaviour of the steel pipe would have been enhanced. However, this poses a degree of construction difficulty due to excavation and installation method of the pipes. The Legacy Way pipe umbrella system only consists of a partial arch at the tunnel crown and each pipe is spaced approximately 1200 mm apart with 900 mm diameter pipe, leaving a gap of approximately 300 mm between pipes. A reinforced concrete portal block was used to support the exposed ends of the pipes.This paper reviews the design analysis, the recorded deflections from the pipe umbrellas and surface monitoring during TBM launch and revisits the analysis using the newly available RS3 program, from Rocscience for 3D analysis of geotechnical structures.CITATION:Norbert, M and O’Connor, D, 2014. "Exploration drill core provides for a number of standard measurements essential for determining the viability of a new mine or the extension of an existing one. Rock lithology and alteration can be visually determined and grade measured from the half core. Geotechnical parameters such as rock strength and structure can also be measured. Using suitable proxies, these metrics can then be used to estimate run-of-mine (ROM) particle size. In combination with comminution test results, these can subsequently be used to design comminution circuit configurations and estimate their performance.The Frieda River Project drill core for the large Horse-Ivaal-Trukai copper-gold porphyry deposit was unusual due to a late stage gypsum-anhydrite stockwork event that overprinted much of the deposit. Above the base of the oxidised zone, which closely matches the water table, gypsum and anhydrite has been leached out, effectively removing the glue holding the rock mass together. As a result, much of the rock above this gypsum-anhydrite surface is fragmented and gravel-like in texture, while the material below this horizon is typically uniform and competent.Large volumes of the orebody above the gypsum-anhydrite surface are expected to need minimal or no blasting for efficient excavation. In addition, the fragmented nature of much of the material was expected to reduce comminution specific energy as it already appears as though it has been crushed. While this was expected to have positive impacts to the operation, the lack of standard geological logging methods available to accurately define the degree of in situ fragmentation led to difficulty in gaining certainty over the ROM product and grinding circuit feed size distributions.Using the extensive library of core photos for the project, a novel method using image analysis techniques to take both the intact core and gravel into account to predict ROM fragmentation was developed. In addition, existing point load test data was used to infer the strength of the rock and its impact on the blasting, crushing and grinding processes. The novel approach allowed development of ROM size distribution data and improved certainty in the results of comminution circuit designs.This paper describes the methodology undertaken in detail, and discusses the results obtained.CITATION:Bennett, D and La Rosa, D, 2016. This paper is a case study highlighting learnings and success in two areas challenging underground miners: change management and collaboration. It examines the implementation process of a new automated loading system in the bulk stoping area of Telfer Mine in Western Australia, controlling multiple load haul dump machines. Here, the new technology has brought together different functions and different companies to deliver a well performing automation system in a changing and challenging mining environment. The introduction of a new and different technology on site has driven collaboration between all stakeholders to break down the traditional barriers to achieve the sustained performance required. Historically, different teams have operated within silos and not always aligned to deliver a ‘best for project’ solution. Technical teams focus on the mine design, maintenance teams focus on reliability and operations execute the plan. Mining contractors focus on productivity and cost. Manufacturers focus on supply of goods and service. Optimising each silo individually is not guaranteed to provide an optimal mining solution. Involving elements from each team as seen at Telfer, has resulted in an optimal mining solution for the automated loading system. A change of focus from the technical teams to include automation parameters in the mine design; operability and maintainability built into the system design allowing for collective ownership and responsibility resulting in a more resilient solution. The implementation of the new technology was not only a technical change but more importantly, successful management of change. Elements of successful change management such as communication, vision, leadership and planning, are essential to harness a trusting site culture which is responsive to new technology. Learnings and challenges from this change process will also be discussed with the intent to improve the success rate and timelines of technology implementations in the future.

The segment of the Upper Cenozoic volcanic chain (CVZ) located on the western border of South America (16-28¦S lat.) is constituted by an association of strato- volcanoes and ignimbrite sheets, with high K calco-alkaline affinities. Strata-bound volcanoes, mainly of andesitic and dacitic composition, present along the whole chain, and various hydrothermal alteration zones, on the slopes and in the cores of eroded volcanic structures. Some of these altera- tion zones bear epithermal precious metal ores and sulphur deposits, which at present are being exploited. The studied Salar de Gorbea area, located in the Andes of northern Chile (25-26¦S lat.) contains a numer- ous group of Miocene to Quaternary stratovolcanoes, with advanced argillic and extreme silicification hydrothermal alteration in their cores and on their slopes, favoring the formation of great volumes of alunite within altered zones and sulphur deposits in the higher parts of the volcanic edifices. Simultaneously, siliceous hydrothermal breccia of the phreato-magmatic type, with evidences of hydromag- matic explosions are recognizable, allowing, in some cases, the ascent towards the surface of rock fragments belonging to the Paleozoic pre volcanic basement. Radiometric ages obtained in some of the hydro- thermal alteration zones (K-Ar in alunite) are slighty young- er than the unaltered rocks which constitute the strato- volcano. Trace element (Hg, As, Sb, S, Au, Ag, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo) patterns in orientative rock samplings show that the studied alterations zones correspond to high sectors of the cpithermal system, without evidences of metallic minerali- zation on surface. The weak erosive action due to the ex- tremely and climatic conditions in this segment of the Andes, has not allowed the cropping out of deeper areas of the hydrothermal alteration zones, in contrast to other Miocene more eroded volcanic edifices and Miocene vol- canic terranes of the Andean Range.

Within that, the mining industry, representing mine planning, mine management and equipment operation, has capital intensive, high productivity equipment and a small but skilled workforce. Continuing education for all personnel in the workforce after formal school courses will be an important contribution towards improving competitiveness. The non-tertiary sector represents a significant proportion of the workforce and requires as much attention as the tertiary educated group. Competency Based Training is now being developed for the mining industry in Australia under the National Training Board and the mining industry is well represented in establishing standards and curriculum. TAFE is a major source of accredited courses but some mining companies are also developing internal courses not necessarily for external accreditation. Articulation of such accredited courses to tertiary mining engineering courses has been considered. The education and training of equipment operators through continuing education requires attention to operating skills, an understanding of the productivity factors under the direct influence of the operator and providing product quality to the customer. The education and training of mining engineers has been widely covered and continuing close involvement of the mining industry is required to ensure well balanced courses in technical and interpersonal skills as well as motivation to continue learning for life. Postgraduate research is a part of continuing education but the mining industry has to continually address the adequate recognition of post-graduate qualifications for the increased technical or management expertise and the development of better analytical and problem solving skills which can be directed towards improving competitiveness. More attention has to be paid to providing adequate financial incentives to attract suitable students, particularly after attaining some experience, and to address their professional career path with a company so they are not significantly disadvantaged by undertaking post-graduate studies. The Chartered Professional Engineer status as provided by The Institution of Engineers, Australia to qualified candidates is being considered by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy as a further recognition of a member's specific expertise and competence in mining and metallurgical engineering. Continuing education plays a major part in the maintenance of the expertise and competence required for a professional engineer to develop and also to retain chartered status. Continuing education will be a significant part of the education and training of all the mining workforce towards improving the competitiveness of the mining industry. The major challenges will be the motivation of all towards lifelong learning and the integration of the various programs towards providing the opportunity for a steady and satisfying career progression.

Spiral concentrators are gravity based separation devices used for the preparation of coal, iron and heavy mineral ores (Wills, 1992). Gravity concentration remains the main separation method for fine iron ore and is used extensively for treating many minerals. Gravity concentration methods separate minerals of different specific gravity by their relative movement in response to gravity and one or more other forces, the latter often being the resistance to motion offered by a viscous fluid such as water or air (Wills, 2006).The main operating variables for a spiral concentrator are the feed rate, the slurry concentration, the wash water addition and the position of the splitters used to separate the tailings, middlings and concentrate streams (Sadeghi, Bazin and Renaud, 2014). Wash water is an important control variable used to wash away entrapped light minerals from the concentrate stream (Burt, 1984; Bouchard, 2001). Sadeghi et al concluded the spiral operation to be sensitive to the wash water flow addition and resultant economic trade-off. Increasing the wash water flow rate increases the concentrate grade at the expense of the iron recovery.The paper addresses the effects of dripping wash water onto the concentrate stream of a spiral processing fine iron ore. The dripping wash water system offers a low flow alternative and could possibly provide a good balance between grade and recovery of valuable minerals without using excessive water. The Multotec SC20HC/7 WW spiral was used for the experimental test work. The spiral was tested at varying solids concentrations; the wash water rate and the splitter positions were kept constant.The use of wash water at 30 per cent, 35 per cent and 40 per cent solid concentration improved the Fe grade in the concentrate by about 1.5 per cent, six per cent and eight per cent respectively. The additional SiO2 rejected by the wash water is approximately three per cent, nine per cent, and 11 per cent at 30 per cent, 35 per cent and 40 per cent solid concentration respectively. Addition of wash water is shown to have minimum effect on grade at 30 per cent solid concentration, and Fe upgrades obtained with and without wash water were found to be similar. Notable upgrades were observed at 35 and 40 per cent solid concentration with wash water. The results obtained suggest that the additional SiO2 rejection by wash water increases with an increase in solid concentration. This suggests that the benefit of using the drip system is notable at higher solid concentration. It is believed that at lower solid concentration SiO2 particles are reasonably free to move around and are possibly less entrapped than at high solid concentration.The Fe grade/recovery and solid concentration relationship with wash water showed a non-linear correlation. The Fe grade increases with an increase in solid concentration up to a somewhat optimum point and then drops as solid concentration increases further. The recovery of Fe on the other hand follows a converse relationship with solid concentration, the recovery decreases from 30 per cent to 35 per cent solid concentration and then increases again at 40 per cent solid concentration. The increase in recovery at higher solid concentration could possibly be explained by the fact that the mass yield to concentrate also increases with solid concentration. Since recovery is a function of both grade and mass yield, the higher recovery at 40 per cent solid concentration is likely due to the high mass yield obtainable at 40 per cent solid concentration.The drip system could therefore possibly offer a safe guarding against grade and solid concentration variations without using excessive water, and possibly ensure that a product within specification is maintained.CITATION:Ramotsabi, C M, Erasmus, W and Bornman, F, 2015. In this study, the authors compiled some case history data and present some typical examples of rock slope stability issues in Afghanistan with a special emphasis on Kandahar region and categorise rock slope failures according to the principles of modern rock slope engineering. The slopes considered involve rock-cut, natural rock slopes mainly. The effect of structural geology and discontinuous nature of rock mass on both slope-cuts and natural rock slopes is taken into account and some preliminary assessments on the stable and unstable rock slopes are presented. Furthermore, the seismic effect on their stability is also considered. It is also pointed out that similar issues could be observed in open pit mines, which may be exploited in years to come.
