Many of the gold deposits in the Timmins• area show a close spatial association to ultramafic metavolcanics. Available analytical data suggest that ultramafic rocks contain significantly higher gold contents than other major rock types. In addition, recent analyses by Keays (1975) suggest that talc-carbonate alteration of ultramafic rocks releases significant quantities of gold. It is proposed that the ultramafic volcanics formed the principal source of gold for the deposits in Timmins, and that the gold was derived from the ultramafic flows when they were extensively carbonatized. Carbonatization of the ultramafic rocks and emplacement of the auriferous quartz-carbonate veins was probably coincident with the last major period of deformation in the gold camp. Delineation of hitherto unrecognized ultramafic volcanics could be an important guide to the discovery of further gold deposits.

Reaction between xanthate ions in solution and oxidized compounds present on the surface of galena to form lead xanthate is considered to be a side reaction not contributing to flotation, although accounting for some consumption of reagent. The direct reaction of lead sulphide with xanthate and oxygen to form lead xanthate is the most significant to flotation. Coadsorntion of dixanthogen is also involved. Previous work has shown lead recovery in lead rougher flotation to be a function of m [H+] where: m = concentration of xanthate in solution rHl = hydrogen ion concentration. A plausible explanation for this relationship is suggest-ed. Likewise, the experimental findings that the amount of xanthate adsorbed under certain conditions is a function of m'[H+] are explained in terms of reaction between xanthate ions and soluble basic lead salts such as PbO.PbS04? It is also shown that m[H+] should have a constant value in lead cleaners operating at a higher pH than the roughers. This conclusion is confirmed by plant data, and the value of the constant agrees well with the calculated value. The finding is useful in mill control.

A vertical tube, 8 m long and 2.5 cm in diameter, electrically heated to 650°C throughout the majority of its height, was used to study the-effect of ore feed rate and hydrogen flow rate on the reduction of fine iron ore particles. A correlation could be obtained between the combined effect of the amount of reducing gas and reduction time and the per-cent reduction. The results suggest that a method based on the reduction of fine iron ores while falling through up-streaming hydrogen cannot be recommended for industrial application.

"In this paper a review of the current status in recycling technologies for cathode ray tubes is given for both the glass and phosphors. Particular emphasis is placed on the opportunities for the recovery of the rare earth elements (REE) from the phosphor coatings. This is placed in the market context of alternative virgin sources and some of the advantages and disadvantages for REE waste recovery. Future opportunities are explored and also some experimental detail on a low cost leach system is presented. INTRODUCTIONThe disposal of cathode ray tube (CRT) based colour televisions has accelerated world-wide with the development of high definition flat screen panels. The total number of colour CRT televisions that have been sold in the United States in the mid-20th century is estimated to have been over 2 billion (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2007), with high current rates of disposal. It is estimated that of the 20 million televisions annually discarded, 78% are send to landfill (Nnorom, Osibanjo & Ogwuegbu, 2011). However, this easily accessible item of electronics cannot only be turned into a valuable resource using the right recovery procedures, it can also prevent the substantial environmental contamination arising from improper disposal. In this review we focus on previous and current work performed on the recycling of CRT based televisions. Due to the increasing demand for rare earth metals, the main focus will be on the possibilities and challenges of recycling the fluorescent phosphor powders on the CRT’s panel glass.CATHODE RAY TUBE’S GLASS RECYCLINGConventional cathode ray tubes consist of three main parts, the panel, the funnel and the neck (Figure 1). To produce the different colours on the screen, the inside of the panel is coated with a matrix of hundreds of thousands of small phosphor dots. Each dot is one of three types of coloured phosphors, emitting either red, green or blue light. These emit light when excited by a beam of electrons generated by electron guns located in the neck of the CRT. These beams pass through holes in the shadow mask and excite the phosphor coating on the inside of the panel, to give light of variable RGB composition, see Figure 1."

"Conventional single heading track drifting in the hard rock mining industry has not shown any significant improvements in advance rates, despite the advent of modern track jumbos and igh speed muck handling systems .This paper presents Kiena 's experience in using a 7 ft 2 in. diameter larva Mark 6 Tunnel-Boring Machine (TBM) for driving 6000ft of drift.IntroductionKiena Gold Mines is located about 5 miles west of the town of Val d'Or, Quebec, approximately 300 miles north of Montreal. The mine commenced production in October 1981 and has gone through various expansions of ore production with 287 916 metric tonnes in 1982 to reach 453 800 metric tonnes in 1986.Due to the majority of claims being covered by a lake, a grassroots exploration drive of remote areas of the property was required to allow diamond drilling on a yearly basis. High speed sequential excavation methods (SEM) of single heading drifting in the mining industry has not progressed much in the past 20 years despite the advent of electric-hydraulic jumbos, Haggloader and Hagglund type cars. Certain examples of record SEM drifting advances have been performed in the past but only under very specific ground and cost conditions."

No one can properly work without sufficient light and this is especially so in mines where conditions are difficult. Artificial lighting is very important for the night shift to provide a safe and efficient working environment, which must be evenly illuminated with no obvious dark spaces and a minimum amount of glare. During an illumination survey of a large mechanized surface mine, it was found that the illumination level varied and was not uniform throughout the length of the road; it was high at one side of the road instead of at the centre. There were also different combinations of lamps, with angles of light arm varying from 35º to 70º. In this respect, an experimental study was carried out with a fabricated telescopic light pole to uncover the optimum design parameters of lighting installations. The analysis was done by plotting isolux contours for fixed installations and drawing graphs for various combinations of luminaries, reflectors, light arm angles, and height of lanterns by plotting the horizontal angle of the light arm along the abscissa, and the contour area along the ordinate. The study revealed that the design parameters of the lantern are mainly dependent on the type of luminaires. It was revealed that the pot reflector with a combination of tubular bulbs produces a wide distribution of light, and contributes towards a reduction of luminaries when installed in longer roads.

The amount of impurities to be processed in a copper smelting process has increased for recent years because of an increase in the electronic scrap amount. It has been found that Sb and Ni effect on the operation of our copper electrorefining process. It is found that the current efficiency of the copper electrorefining tended to be decreased as the Ni concentration in the electrolyte increased. The passivation of the process seemed to be more related to SO4 concentration in the electrolyte rather than the Ni concentration in it. The current efficiency decreased when the Sb content in the anode was high. A high Sb content in the anode caused easy passivation by forming a gel-like film in the slime layer. We have developed a method to for see the anode passivation in a short time while generating a slime layer. We confirmed the tendency of passivation through the experiment of changing Pb content in anode. Passivation was easily occur with an increase in Pb content in the anode. The amount of slime increased as the Pb content in the anode increased. This suggests that passivation was facilitated because liquid diffusion near the anode was inhibited. We examined the components of our copper electro-refining process like anode composition, slime properties and electrolyte composition, and investigated the mechanism by which Sb and Ni affect passivation and current efficiency. "Search Minerals is currently exploring the Port Hope Simpson (PHS) Rare Earth Element District in southeastern Labrador, Canada. The Foxtrot Rare Earth Element (REE) Project in the PHS District has a 43-101 resource estimate consisting of 3,410,000 tonnes of Indicated Mineral Resources and 5,850,000 tonnes of Inferred Mineral Resources. The indicated and inferred resources contain 1.07% and 0.98% total rare earth element oxide (including yttrium), respectively. The dysprosium and neodymium grades are particularly attractive at 218 ppm Dy2O3 and 1687 ppm Nd2O3 for the indicated resources and 208 ppm Dy2O3 and 1494 ppm Nd2O3 for the inferred resources. The mineralization remains open along strike and at depth and is only one of a number of attractive exploration targets in the Port Hope Simpson area. The REE minerals fergusonite and allanite are present. The ore can be beneficiated by gravity, magnetic separation and flotation to a recovery of +80% for the individual REE. Acid bake and water leaching may be used to extract REE into solution for subsequent purification and recovery. The extraction range for single stage leach tests were 91-96% for Nd, 84-87% for Tm and 92-94 % for Dy with modest acid consumptions. INTRODUCTIONSearch Minerals Inc. (Search) is exploring the 100% owned Port Hope - Simpson District in Labrador, Canada for rare earth elements (REE). This District is approximately 135 km by 12 km in size, and is highly prospective for heavy and light rare earth elements. A total of 11 REE prospects have been discovered in the District to date, including the Foxtrot. In addition, Search is exploring in the 100% owned Henley Harbour region and has joint ventures with Quest Rare Minerals in the Strange Lake region, and with Great Western Minerals Group in the Red Wine complex, all in Labrador. These exploration locations are illustrated in the Figure 1. The focus of this paper is the investigation of the mineralogy and processing of Foxtrot REE materials. The Foxtrot resource falls within the claims held by Search in the Port Hope Simpson REE District. The infrastructure available at Foxtrot is excellent with a deep water port, air strip and road and power infrastructure at Port Hope Simpson. Over $7 Million has been spent to date on exploration and development of the District. The Foxtrot has been explored using prospecting geochemical methods, geophysics (airborne and ground), channel sampling of surface outcrops, mapping and three phases of drilling (18,934 m total)."

"AbstractA polishing .technique is described together with two anodic etching methods for aluminum and its alloys. Some of the optical and structural characteristics of the film formed by •these etching methods are discussed and it is shown to what degree these properties of the film are related to the crystallographic orientation of the metallic substrate. Applications to the study of recrystallization and twinning phenomena and to the study of plastic deformation, banding, and texture estimation are discussed. Micrographs are shown .to illustrate the manner in which the technique is particularly well suited to the study of such phenomena.IntroductionThe physical metallurgist is constantly faced with the problem of polishing and etching of metallic sections. Mechanical polishing is tedious, time consuming, and not applicable whenever a surface entirely free from plastic deformation is required. Etchants are generally required to reveal the grain structure in order to determine its size, shape, and regularity, or to bring up constituents. In the case of aluminum, the .most common etchant to reveal grains is a mixture of three acids: HC1, HN03, and HF. This etchant is fairly satisfactory on certain alloys and for certain metallurgical conditions but in general fails to give a good definition of the grain on castings, on highly alloyed products, and whenever the grain is smaller than 100 microns in diameter. Besides size and shape, a grain, or crystal, has an orientation and may be endowed with several types of imperfections."

"This study analyzes the separation of rare earth elements by means of a supported liquid membrane (SLM) with the final objective of recovering REE from an apatite concentrate (Alemrajabi, Forsberg, & Rasmuson, 2015; Mohammadi, Forsberg, Martinez de la Cruz, & Rasmuson, 2015). In this study, the feed phase consists of an aqueous phase containing REE, the membrane phase contains the organic solvent and carrier (D2EHPA and EHEHPA), and the stripping phase is a hydrochloric acid solution. An evaluation of mass fluxes, separation efficiency, and membrane performance is conducted. In order to analyze the suitability of liquid membranes in the extraction of REE, a deeper insight into the mechanisms causing instability is needed. In this study, surface tension is considered as the key factor of Marangoni instabilities and spontaneous emulsification.INTRODUCTIONThe demand of REE and their compounds has increased considerably due to their special physicochemical features that make them crucial elements for numerous high-tech applications, including wind turbines, hybrid cars, mobile phones, and defense technologies. They are also extensively utilized in traditional industries such as nuclear energy, petroleum, metallurgy, agriculture, and textiles (Xie, Zhang, Dreisinger, & Dyole, 2014; Zhang, Wu, Bian, & Zeng, 2014).Solvent extraction is widely used for the separation of REE (Xie et al., 2014; Zhao, Huo, Pan, Li, & Liu, 2014). Di-(2-ethylhexyl)-phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and 2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (EHEHPA) are two of the most effective extractants for the separation of rare earth elements among organophosphorus extractants (Gupta & Krishnamurthy, 2005). However, the difficulty in stripping loaded D2EHPA extractant, especially for heavy REE, has limited its utilization. Yttrium can be stripped at lower acidities in EHEHPA systems compared to D2EHPA systems (Gupta et al., 2005), but the extraction efficiency is lower. Conventional solvent extraction by mixer-settlers is restricted by its large solvent inventory and loading limits, and suffers from phase disengagement, emulsification, loss of solvent, and flooding problems (Swain, Jeong, Lee, & Lee, 2007). In this context, supported liquid membranes (SLMs) present a potential alternative due to their advantages, being low solvent inventory, process simplicity, low energy and operational costs, great enrichment ratio, and combination of extraction and stripping into one single step. A SLM is a system in which two aqueous phases are separated by an organic liquid membrane suspended in the pores of a porous support by capillary forces. One of the aqueous phases is the feed solution with the solute and the other is the stripping or receiving solution. The solute diffuses through the liquid membrane and then is extracted into the stripping solution (Kislik, 2010)."

"Drillhole placement involves benefits, costs, and constraints. Benefits are related to the drilling campaign value, which includes maximizing “indicated” and “measured” resources. Costs include drilling, rig movement, and access construction. Constraints include infeasible areas, maximum and minimum angles of drilling, maximum depth of drilling, and budget. Manually planning drillholes that meet these constraints is suboptimal. A framework for straight drillhole optimization that accounts for benefits, costs, and constraints is presented. The method aims to maximize the value of resources converted from “inferred” to indicated and measured. The framework is demonstrated for a Nevada gold deposit and outperforms manually selected drillholes.RÉSUMÉ Le choix de l’emplacement d’un trou de forage s’accompagne d’avantages, de coûts et de contraintes. Les avantages sont liés à la valeur d’une campagne de forage, qui comprend l’optimisation des ressources « indiquées » et « mesurées ». Les coûts englobent le forage, le déplacement de l’appareil de forage et la construction des routes d’accès. Quant aux contraintes, elles portent sur les zones impraticables, les angles maximums et minimums de forage, la profondeur maximale de forage ainsi que le budget. La planification manuelle des trous de forage répondant à ces contraintes est sous-optimale. Cet article présente un cadre relatif à l’optimisation des trous verticaux de forage tenant compte des avantages, des coûts et des contraintes. Cette méthode vise à optimiser la valeur des ressources converties de la phase « ressources présumées » à celle de « ressources indiquées et mesurées ». Ce cadre est appliqué à un gisement aurifère du Nevada et donne de meilleurs résultats que les trous de forage sélectionnés manuellement. INTRODUCTIONDetermining the optimum location of infill drilling has been studied because the high cost of drilling suggests that using fewer drillholes is preferred, and targeting locations of the deposit that are locally uncertain should result in better mine planning decisions and increased profit of the operation. Existing methods for optimizing drillhole locations consider minimizing the kriging variance (KV) as the objective and are mostly restricted to two dimensions (Soltani-Mohammadi & Hezarkhari, 2013a, b; Soltani- Mohammadi, Safa, & Mokhtari, 2016)."

Rare Element Resources Inc., a U.S. based company, has developed a three-stage process for producing a +98% mixed REO powder from hard rock feedstock (-48 mesh, 2.9-4.8% REO) consisting of bastnaesite and ancylite minerals. Firstly, the whole ore is digested in chloride media at low temperature in counter-current flow mode. Secondly, the rare earths (REEs) are selectively precipitated as oxalates directly from an impure pregnant leach solution (PLS). Finally, significant amounts of free acid and water are recovered from the REE-depleted filtrate and subsequently recycled within the process. Excess heat from the oxalate calcination process is captured and reused in the plant. Due to the low leach temperature (45 ºC) and moderate acid dosage (240-297 kg/t, HCl), rare earth oxides (REOs) are preferentially leached out of fine solids leaving most of the base metals (Ba, Fe, and Al ) in the residue. Selective recovery of REEs from the PLS is achieved by mixing dilute oxalic acid (33% H2C2O4) and PLS at elevated temperature (85-95 ºC). The REEs plus thorium are precipitated as oxalates (REE2 (C2O4).xH2O) while the base metals are left behind in the barren filtrate. Multiple batch and pilot test results have confirmed that 50-80% of the oxalic acid can be recovered from the REE-depleted PLS through low-temperature crystallization (10-15 ºC). Typical leach efficiencies of critical rare earths at 45 ºC range from 85-99% (average 93%) while oxalate precipitation at high temperature increases the crystal size of RE oxalates (>450 microns, d80) thereby improving filtration. The economic benefits of this process include elimination of flotation and magnetic separation Capex and driving hydrometallurgical Opex down to $6- 7/kg, REO produced. As part of a comprehensive risk mitigation strategy, Rare Element Resources Inc has operated multiple pilot plants at SGS in Lakefield, Ontario, Canada to optimize counter-current leaching (CCL), REE oxalate precipitation (OXP), and thorium removal circuits. This paper presents pilot testing data from CCL and REE OXP circuits.

The most common type of waves used for probing anisotropy of rocks in laboratory is the direct P wave. Information potential of the measured P-wave velocity, however, is limited. In rocks displaying weak triclinic anisotropy, the P-wave velocity depends just on 15 linear combinations of 21 elastic parameters, called the weak-anisotropy parameters. In strong triclinic anisotropy, the P-wave velocity depends on the whole set of 21 elastic parameters, but inversion for 6 of them is ill-conditioned and these parameters are retrieved with a low accuracy. Therefore, in order to retrieve the complete elastic tensor accurately, velocities of S waves must also be measured and inverted. For this purpose, we developed a lab facility which allows the P- and S-wave ultrasonic sounding of spherical rock samples in 132 directions distributes regularly over the sphere. The velocities are measured using a pair of P-wave sensors with the transmitter and receiver polarized along the radial direction and using two pairs of S-wave sensors with the transmitter and receiver polarized tangentially to the spherical sample in mutually perpendicular directions. We present an inversion method for elastic parameters describing general triclinic anisotropy. We demonstrate on synthetic tests that the inversion becomes more robust and stable if the S-wave velocities are included. This applies even to the case when the velocity of the S waves is measured in a limited number of directions and with a significantly lower accuracy than that of the P wave. Finally, we analyze velocities measured on a rock sample from the Outokumpu deep drill hole, Finland, including the error analysis for several levels of confining pressure.

A brief account of economic developments in and around northeastern Alberta is presented and mention is made of mining and industrial developments currently of interest in the area. Planned and projected operations are briefly discussed for this region. The history of geological surveys and mining activities in the Shield area of Alberta and the adjoining parts of Northwest Territories and Saskatchewan is traced. Reassessment of the presently-known economic picture of northwestern Canada in conjunction with some recent information on Precambrian structures of northeastern Alberta points to some interesting mining possibilities, particularly in and around that province.

This paper presents a novel model to assess the risk of adjacent buildings in tunnelling environments based on Extended Cloud Model (ECM). ECM is an organic integration of Extension Theory (ET) and Cloud Model (CM), where ET is appropriately employed to flexibly expand the variable range from [0, 1] to (-8, +8), and CM is used to overcome the randomness and fuzziness during the gradation of evaluation factors. The risk level of a specific adjacent building is assessed by the correlation with the cloud models. A confidence indicator ? is proposed to illustrate the rationality and reliability of evaluating results. Ten buildings adjacent to Wuhan Metro Line Two (WMLT) are randomly chosen among hundreds of adjacent buildings for a case study. Results have proved to be consistent with the actual situation. Compared with other traditional evaluation methods, ECM has been verified to be a more competitive solution with high calculation accuracy, wide adaptability, as well as simplified computer programming. There are no stringent requirements on the quantity of training data during the modelling process, and the original data can be directly entered into ECM without a normalization procedure, avoiding the potential information loss. ECM can be offered as a decision support tool for the risk assessment in urban tunnelling construction and worth popularizing in other similar complicated projects.

OVER THE YEARS concentration of the Sullivan ore has become progressively more difficult as the ore has become increasingly refractory. The introduction of new reagents and changes in the flow of the concentrator have been and continue to be necessary in order to maintain and improve the efficiency of metal extraction. Prior to the completion of the pilot mill in 1957 ail new ideas were developed in laboratory equipment. If these were found to be promising, there was no alternative but to introduce them directly to the main mill flow in one step. When a major change was involved there was always the possibility of serious losses while the mill was being adjusted to the changed conditions. It proved difficult to determine whether these losses were the result of the changed procedure or of failure to adjust the flow to a change in the condition of the ore during the test. The pilot mill has provided a valuable intermediate step between the laboratory and the mill. It avoids the losses which occurred when unsuccessful full-scale tests were attempted, and conversely it provides assurance that full-scale flow changes can be made without serious hazard.

"Un trait marquant du cadre tectorwstratigraphique de la Sous-province de l'Abitibi est la présence de nombreux couloirs de déformation d’extension régionale et sub-concordants au grain stratigraphique. La présence de grandes masses granitoïdes qui perturbent l'allure du grain tectonique est typique de la partie nord de la Sous-province de l'Abitibi. Des rides E-W constituées de complexes plutoniques précoces forment des reliefs structuraux agissant comme des moles résistants qui interfèrent avec la déformation régionale.Deux types de couloirs de déformation sont distingués, les couloirs de bordure et les discontinuités structurales. Les couloirs de bordure représentent des auréoles de déformation élevée qui s’accompagnent généralement d’un métamorphisme au faciès amphibolite. lls suivent /'interface entre les roches granitoïdes et les assemblages supracrustaux. Ces couloirs sont de puissance kilométrique et sont confines, surtout au sein des roches vertes, a l’interface des complexes granitoïdes d’importance. La limite entre la Sous-province de l'Opatica et les roches supra crustales de l'Abitibi est caractérisée par un important couloir de bordure issu possiblement d'un chargement tectonique irrégulier et concentre lors du raccourcissement horizontal.Les discontinuités structurales sont des failles ductiles qui se propagent surtout en direction E-W mais avec des variantes de directions SE et NE. Les discontinuités E-W se caractérisent par la présence d'une linéation d'étirement à fort angle de chute. Les discontinuités SE sont caractérisées par des linéations d'étirement horizontales et directionnelles et les mouvements observes sont system attiquement dextres. Les discontinuités NE sont des failles à comportement beaucoup plus fragile et se distinguent par des composantes de mouvement senestre. Elles sont tar dives par rapport aux discontinuités E-W et SE et ne représentent pas la symétrique du système SE.La combinaison des systèmes E-W et SE décrit un motif anastomose a l' échelle régionale. Les failles ductiles se rejoignent defaçon asymptotique, isolant des blocs peu ou pas affectes par la déformation. Generally pillars in the Southern African hard rock tabular underground mining environment are designed using either empirical pillar design formulae or numerical modelling (analytical) methods utilizing the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. However, none of the pillar design methodologies employed takes cognizance of weak layers either within the pillar material or in the immediate foundation of the pillar. Over the past few years, the presence of a weak layer either within the pillar material or within the immediate foundation of the pillar has resulted in the closure of one platinum mine (Everest Mine), closure of one chrome mine (Wonderkop Chrome) and large-scale instability in a couple of chrome and platinum mines in South Africa and Zimbabwe. A study has been initiated to better understand the failure mode and strengths of the pillars where pillar failure associated with weak layers occurred. Owing to the infancy of the study into the failed pillar strength and failure mechanism, the purpose of this paper is to highlight the circumstances that led to the collapse of mining sections and a shaft, and the difficulty associated with designing pillars in the Southern African chrome and platinum mining operations.

Over the past 50 years, the use of autoclaves in the metallurgical industry has evolved from final metal recovery (hydrogen reduction) and purification (sulphide precipitate oxidation) to treating whole ores and concentrates. Recent process developments, such as the use of autoclaves for laterite leaching, have necessitated higher temperature and pressure operations, which in turn have seen marked advancements in technology and manufacturing capabilities to keep in step with process demands. This paper will discuss the advances in technology in terms of design, materials and construction of autoclaves and liners, typical dip tube design and geometric layout. This paper will also address specific auxiliary equipment, such as acid and steam injection systems, and components, such as agitator seal systems.
