"This paper is based on data generated between October, 1986 and October, 1989, during the implementation of an Ecological Engineering close-out for a zinc mine in Northern Ontario, where 690000 tonnes of tailings contain 41.1% pyrite and 4.1% pyrrhotite. The objective was to determine rates of sulphide oxidation and iron precipitation in the tailings. Those rates are relevant for the assessment of the long-term effectiveness of biological systems employed in the removal of heavy metals from contaminated drainage issuing from tailings.Data were collected on the topography and stratigraphy of the tailings basin, subsurface temperatures and groundwater levels, and chemical analyses were made of water samples collected from a number of piezometers. The thickness of unsaturated tailings varied widely between individual piezometer locations; annual maxima ranged from 0.67 m to 3.55 m, and annual minima from 0 to 2.68 m. Sulphate concentrations ranged from 36 mg/L to 20180 mg/L; iron concentrations from 0.36 mg/L to 9938 mg/L; and zinc concentrations from 0.33 mg/L to 1123 mg/L.The geochemistry of the piezometer samples suggests that some of the initial Fe content, resulting from metal sulphide oxidation, is subsequently precipitated in the tailings pile and, possibly, in the underlying unconsolidated sediments, probably in the form of iron-hydroxide and Na-jarosite. Other metals such as Zn may be co-precipitated with Fe. The discharge of a portion of these metals to the environment would be delayed by this process. Some of the initial sulphate may also be lost from solution, probably by precipitation of gypsum; approximate saturation degrees for gypsum ranged from -3.27 to +0.47. The precipitated minerals will somewhat decrease the porosity and permeability of the tailings.Sulphide-oxidation rates, calculated using the analytical results and the estimated amount of annual recharge at the tailings site, average 0.0057 mol/kg/yr. Calculated iron-precipitation rates average 0.000386 mol/kg/yr. It is concluded that the characteristics of seepage from mining wastes may change with time, reflecting the solubilization of precipitated secondary minerals."

"Use of zinc shot feed is a well-established procedure among North American electro-galvanizers. This form of zinc is easy to handle and relatively inexpensive when compared with zinc oxide. This paper reports results on the kinetics of zinc shot dissolution in traditional pure zinc solutions and in electrolytes used for the plating of nickel/zinc alloys. Despite the cementation of minor amounts of nickel in the latter solution, acceptable dissolution rates of the zinc shot can be achieved through proper adjustment of the solution velocity. Under these conditions, the nickel shell produced by cementation is continuously abraded, exposing the underlying zinc.IntroductionThe use of insoluble, noble metal-containing anodes rather than soluble zinc anodes for the operation of high current density electro-galvanizing lines has gained almost universal acceptance. Two major reasons for this trend are:• improved control of the process by virtue of constant inter-electrode distance; and• increased productivity because the operation of the lines does not require the relatively frequent interruptions for replacement of consumed anodes .The results of the principal anode and cathode reactions are, respectively, depletion of the zinc content of the electrolyte and the increase on its acidity;"

"Phosphate tailing is a kind of industrial waste that emitted from separation processing of phosphate ores, which is usually discarged to the tailing pond without treatment. Recovery of phosphorus from tailings is of great significance for comprehensive utilization of phosphorus resource. Chemical composition of a micro-fine cryptocrystalline phosphate tailing was investigated by X Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES), and mineral composition and occurrence of harmful elements were analyzed by optical microscope and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X ray Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (X-ray EDS) and Mineral liberation Analyzer (MLA). On the basis of above, effects of those on mineral processing for phosphate tailing was analyzed. Chemical analysis results in combination with microscopy indicated that there is a certain amount of iron and aluminum and it should focus on the removal of them in separation processing. The cryptocrystalline structure, especially the micro banding structure and micro porphyritic structure indicated that there is quite amount of phosphate in fine particles and it should recovery the phosphorus as much as possible when designing the flotation technology for this difficult separation fine phosphate tailing. This study can provide theoretical guide for efficient phosphorus recovery of from fine phosphate tailing by flotation.INTRODUCTIONPhosphate rocks are vital nonrenewable resources and are essential components in agricultural fertilizers and phosphorous-based chemicals (Gharabaghi et al., 2009). About 95% of the phosphate produced around the world is consumed in the fertilizer industry (page 60 Abdel-Zaher, 2008; Jasinski, 2007). Froth flotation, a solid wettability based separation process is widely used in separation of phosphate rock and shown to be effective (Yehia et al., 1990; Singh et al., 1992; Elgillani and Abouzeid, 1993; Al-Fariss et al., 2013) .Poor selectivity and low recovery for micro-fine particles are hard issues in flotation of middle-low grade phosphate ore because Phosphate resources is becoming poor, fine and complex as the rich ores run out since the 1970s. The rapid depletion of high grade ores forces minerals industry to process low grade ores where finer grinding is required to achieve required liberation of the values, making the fine particle flotation inevitable. the performance of conventional flotation deteriorates rapidly as particle size decreases to below 10-20 µm, depending on the density of the particles (Feng and Aldrich, 1999). To date, fine particle flotation is still considered to be a challenge in mineral processing (Li et al., 2015) ."

The development of a triplex meter for earth dam instrumentation is described. The advantages of the hydro-cycloned dam over the spigotted dam are outlined. INTRODUCTIONThe realistic and responsible recognition of the pollution problem, combined with the grossly increased volumes of waste material from large modern mining operations, has emphasized the demand for safe tailings dams at minimum cost.Tailings may be defined as the waste material from a mining operation after the process of concentration in which the minerals have been extracted for commercial use. The present revenue from the Canadian Mining Industry is slightly over $4,000,000,000 per year and it is estimated that the quantity of tailings produced exceeds 300,000,000 tons annually. In many instances, the volume of tailings from a mining operation is greater than the volume of crude ore mined on account of the small quantity of valuable mineral recovered during concentration, and on account of the ""swell factor"" resulting from the processes of drilling and blasting, crushing, and grinding of the crude ore. Some of the larger mine tailings deposits contain over 200,000,000 cubic yards and the associated tailings dams are among the largest man-ma.de structures in the world."

"A dedicated iron removal stage was installed at Anglo American Platinum’s Rustenburg Base Metals Refiners (RBMR) during an expansion project which began execution in 2010. The Pressure Iron Removal (PIR) process aims to precipitate iron from a nickel leach solution under medium temperature (145 °C) oxidative conditions using caustic for neutralisation. Since commissioning, the process has been robust in removing iron from the refinery but has shown significant variability in the residues produced. These residues, which are typically comprised of ferrihydrite, hematite or natrojarosite, have varying iron contents and different physical properties which have implications for their filtration and ultimate removal from the refinery. Since over 95% of nickel plated at RBMR passes through the PIR section, volumetric constraints caused by poor filtration performance directly influence nickel production and stabilisation of this process remains central to the continued ramp-up of the refinery to full nameplate capacity. This paper details the development of the PIR process and the journey from concept to implementation. Recent laboratory and plant scale tests have highlighted the importance of the initial phase formed in the autoclave for the ultimate residue requiring filtration and how the feed acid concentration is a critical control parameter. On this basis, a new caustic dosing philosophy was implemented which improved pH control in the autoclave. Further optimisation of the PIR process is on-going.INTRODUCTIONIn 2010, an expansion of Rustenburg Base Metal Refiners (RBMR) to increase nickel production from 21 to 33 ktpa began execution. The management of iron was pivotal in the ultimate configuration in the new circuit and one of the primary differences from the original circuit was the addition of a dedicated iron removal stage: Pressure Iron Removal (PIR). A significant drive for this new unit operation was to facilitate the separation of iron from other leach residues. Not only did this result in a significant decrease in the amount of leach residue but, without the constraints associated with iron precipitation during leaching, has permitted more aggressive leaching conditions and, correspondingly, greater throughput and efficiencies.However, as with many commercial implementations of even mature technologies, the journey from development to implementation has presented challenges for the continued ramp-up of the refinery to full nameplate capacity. Specifically, since all nickel bearing leach solution must pass through the PIR section prior to the nickel purification and recovery circuit, throughput difficulties in the PIR section can directly impact supply of feed to the nickel tank house. Since commissioning, the PIR autoclave has effectively removed iron from the refinery, but has shown significant variation in the solids phases produced in the autoclave. This variation presents difficulties for the filtration of the discharge slurry and represents a key throughput limitation which periodically impacts production. Additionally, the increasing production rates associated with the ramp-up of the refinery have resulted in a significant increase in the required volumetric throughput through the PIR process. This has placed even greater emphasis on improving the stability of the solid phase produced in the autoclave, ultimately targeting an easily filterable residue with high iron content."

"PREFACEAt the CIM Annual General Meeting in Quebec City, R.E. Pike of The Toronto-Dominion Bank described how the Canadian banking industry worked with the minerals industry to assemble the large capital requirements for resource projects in Canada and overseas. He developed a profile of the mining industry and Canadian banking, both being important sectors of the Canadian economy and global in context. He also outlined the banking and financing partnership that existed in the past. In looking to the future and challenge that lies ahead f or each industry, Mr. Pike questioned whether the financing practices of the 1970s will be acceptable over the next decade. In that regard, he highlighted the risks that impact on each industry and illustrated how that financing partnership might evolve in response to those forces. The folio wing is a synopsis of his paper.IntroductionThe Canadian mining and metals industry is prominent in the domestic economy and respected internationally. Any measure of its performance illustrates that status-percentage of GNP, employment, exports, capital investment, size relative to other producing nations, etc.Energy, Mines and Resources Canada has forecast that the non-fuel minerals industry will grow in real terms by an average annual rate of 3.0% over the period 1981 to 1991. Using the GNP as reference, that growth in non-fuel mineral production will represent 7.7% of GNP. In translating that growth to capital expenditure, the EMR Canada estimates the aggregate amount at $43.8 billion ('79 dollars) or approximately 12% of total business investment in Canada during the 10-year period.About half of the $43.8 billion will be devoted to the ferrous sector-$8.4 billion in iron ore mining and $12.4 billion in the steel industry. Capital investment in nonferrous s projects is estimated at $13.3 billion, and it is projected at $6.7 billion for industrial minerals. The residual $3.0 .billion is exploration spending."

These improvements can then be implemented by simply improving operations or in some cases, through the use of an automatic control system. IntroductionIn today's competitive environment, controlling costs is becoming increasingly important. All costs associated with operation must be controlled in an effort to improve competitive position. Electricity is a cost component that can and should be managed.Although the term management can mean different things to different people, the intent is always the same: to make the best possible use of existing resources, whether labour, equipment or electricity.The simple approach to managing electricity presented in this paper consists of four steps.I. Understand Peak Demand and Energy. It is essential to understand the terms, peak demand and energy and their effect on your electrical bill.2. Know Your Present Electrical Use. The present use of electricity in the plant must be known. This goes beyond simply knowing how much is used at each time of day, to accurately knowing how each process is contributing to the total plant electrical load, and ultimately to the electrical bill.3. Identification of Savings Opportunities. With this information, energy savings opportunities for reducing the electrical bill and improving profits can be identified.4. Implementing Improvements. Having identified areas of potential savings, improvements can then be implemented in order of their significance. This could be a matter of simply improving operations, or in some eases may mean the use of an automatic control system.These four steps can result in significant dollar savings."

"The object of this paper is to review electrolytic copper refining as it was in 1954(1), as it is now in 1984, and to comment on the many improvements which have been made in the last thirty years.In 1954, and even in 1984, the ASTM specification B 115 for cathode copper was 99.90% minimum copper plus silver content and 100% minimum electrical conductivity, IACS standard. However, to meet competition and to satisfy the requirements of the fabricators and the electrical industry, the electrolytic refinery must supply a product of 99.95% to 99.96% minimum copper content, and 101fJlo minimum electrical conductivity.The range of cathode impurities reported by 20 major copper refineries in 1954 are given in Table I.The much more rigid British Specification, DD 78, for high-purity cathode copper, specifies individual elements, as well as groups of elements, as shown in Table 2.The Svenska test has been replaced by a similar procedure which uses 2.r mm diameter wire. The ISO test is the one listed in the DD 78 specification. In Table 3, corresponding values for the Svenska and ISO test s are given for various wire bar coppers."

"The response of cemented backfills subjected to simulated blast loadings is studied using centrifugal modelling techniques. Scaling requirements for centrifugal modelling are developed and the results of the similitude analysis show that an acceleration field is required to capture the true dynamic response of backfill models. Experiments have been conducted at various centrifugal accelerations. The effects of ring blasting were simulated by an impact loading on the exposed fill face. The behaviour of the cemented backfill was monitored with accelerometers as well as dynamic stress gauges.Cemented backfill response to impact loadings was found to depend strongly on simulated gravitational stress level. Results also show that the characteristics of the response changes with distance from the impact. Finally, the results of the models were used to predict prototype peak accelerations, velocities and displacements. The results reported in this study indicate that centrifuge modelling may be a useful tool for dynamic studies of blast damage to backfills. Centrifuge modelling can be carried out at low costs and can be used to design prototype instrumentation systems. IntroductionThe response of cemented mine backfills to blast loadings is of concern to the mining industry because these backfills provide local and regional support during ore pillar extraction. Considerable research has been reported on the static stability (Smith et al., 1983) and on effects of reinforcements on cemented backfills (Mitchell, 1989). However, information regarding dynamic aspects of cemented backfill is limited. O'Hearn and Swan (1989) reported on the response of cemented backfill to blast loading, but these blasts were not very dose to the backfill . A schematic representation of a rock-backfill system is shown in Figure I.The mechanics of transfer of explosive energy to rock and subsequently to the backfill, and the resulting responses, are complex. Achison (1968) listed more than twenty factor s affecting the blast fragmentation of rock and grouped these into the categories of explosive parameters, charge parameters and rock parameters. Although significant advances have been made, during the past two decades, in understanding the mechanics of blasting, the degree of uncertainty associated with predicting the behaviour of backfills subjected to dynamic loadings makes the application of simple design safety factors insufficient. Comprehensive testing programs or prototype instrumentation is required to evaluate the risks associated with blast or earthquake loadings on backfill."

"Mathematics, process theory, process practice and computer applications are the main disciplines that contribute to developing useful techniques for computer simulation of mineral and coal processing plants. As in any multidisciplinary effort, communication or transfer mechanisms must be developed to facilitate the flow of experience between participants of different backgrounds. These mechanisms include written reports, verbal communications, workshops and transfer of computer programs. The SPOC project at CANMET is devoted to computer simulation and as such has addressed, or will address in the near future, problems inherent to methodology transfer. The first major output of the project was the material balance program, MATBAL2, which has been acquired by over 30 organizations. Program documentation, industrial workshops and summer student programs have been used to effect the transfer. This experience is discussed and the future outlined.IntroductionComputer simulation has become a common tool in many different fields of human activity during the past two decades, as illustrated in Figure 1. The total number of articles abstracted in Chemical Abstracts under the general subject entry of “Simulation"" has been following a pseudo-exponential growth since 1972 and was approaching 5000 in 1980, whereas no such entry was even used prior to 1967. This represents over a dozen papers published daily on the subject and should continue to grow to higher figures. Still, progress toward accepting modelling and simulation in mineral and coal processing has been very slow. It will be shown later that this slow acceptance is a cause rather than a consequence of the limited success of the various attempts made so far to draw unambiguous benefits from simulation applications. The real cause of the difficulties in fully accepting the new methodology lies in the multidisciplinary aspect of modelling and simulation, which does not suit the traditionally conservative approach that prevails in designing and operating large and costly processing plants."

"P.T Freeport Indonesia's new SAG mill commenced operation in February 1995. The reclaim system consists of four apron feeders and a series of three conveyors. The feeders are used in various combinations and relative speeds to blend SAG mill feed. It was recognized during design of the control system that effective automatic control would require dead-time and gain compensation. The successful implementation of the Dahlin algorithm to provide variable dead-time and gain compensation is described and compared to Pl control.RésumeL'opération du nouveau SAG de P.T. "Electrodeposition processes are widely used in the metallurgical industry to produce, extract and refine metals from various feed materials. However, raw materials used to provide non-ferrous metals often contain high amounts of iron. In the presence of iron, while metals are plated at the cathode, electrowinning processes produce corrosive and highly oxidative ferric ions at the anode that are harmful for the process sustainability. In fact, these ferric ions cause dramatic current efficiency loss, induce high maintenance expenditures to limit the corrosion of devices and it results in the formation of impure and dendritic deposits on the cathode. Consequently, the management of iron in electrodeposition process became a major issue in non-ferrous metals production. Actually, numerous methods have been developed to limit the ferric ion concentration in the electrolyte or, at least, to limit its harmful effect. Many methods aim to limit the iron(III) concentration in the electrolyte, generally by coupling electrowinning to extraction process such as solvent extraction (SX) (Bender & Emmerich, 2015), ion exchange (IX) (Gula, Dreisinger, & Horwitz, 1996) or cementation (Kust, 1979) processes to remove ferric ions. Other routes consist of (i) using the ferric ions oxidant properties to leach raw materials, either directly in the electrolytic cell (Fanta & Tributsch, 1975) or through a secondary circuit (Cain, 1950), or (ii) reducing ferric ions through periodic reversal of direct current to enhance the formation of Fe2+ (Loutfy & Bharucha, 1980). On the other side of the spectrum, papers discuss methods to valorize the iron from by-products of the non-ferrous metal industry, that generates vast quantities of iron containing wastes (A. Agrawal, Sahu, & Pandey, 2004). Many studies on iron electroplating and electrolytic iron production from ores have been carried out (Cain, 1950; Mostad, Rolseth, & Thonstad, 2008), but very few have been conducted on waste or by-products. Therefore, we propose to build on the previous literature review to develop a process for the production of electrolytic iron from by-products.INTRODUCTIONNon-ferrous metals and their alloys are used in a large variety of applications. Aluminum and titanium are used for their strength, light weight and corrosion resistant properties in structural applications. Copper has been used in various applications requiring high thermal and electrical conductivity, as kitchen products and electrical wires. Nickel and zinc are commonly used as plating materials; nickel offers a wide range of working temperature and zinc is used for steel plating. Gold, silver, and platinum group metals are used in electrical/electronic applications, jewelry and chemistry as catalysts."

"Concerns about using microdiamonds for resource estimation have been raised by workers because multiple diamond populations exist in many parts of the mantle source region, small diamonds in kimberlite could be exposed to proportionately greater levels of resorption and modification, and euhedral microdiamonds could crystallize immediately prior to kimberlite eruption. This paper addresses these concerns; discusses the geology of the mantle, the principal diamond host rocks, and the impact of mantle processes; compares micro- and macrodiamond properties and features; and outlines steps to identify and mitigate the risk of diamond resorption and its impact on the diamond grade-size relationship.RÉSUMÉ Des travailleurs se sont interrogés sur l’utilisation de microdiamants pour estimer la ressource; en effet, de multiples populations de diamants existent dans plusieurs secteurs de la région source dans le manteau. Des petits diamants dans la kimberlite pourraient être exposés à des niveaux proportionnellement supérieurs de résorption et de modification; de plus, des diamants idiomorphes pourraient cristalliser immédiatement avant l’éruption de la kimberlite. "A computer program is described which will analyze the stability of coal pillars. The extent of the peripheral failed zone and the central elastic core of the pillar, the stress distribution across the pillar and its strength can be determined by a ""sliceby- slice"" analysis technique. The program incorporates a brittle/pseudo-ductile transition point so that a pillar may fail by brittle fracture or pseudo-ductile yield. It is shown that:(i) There is a minimum pillar stress below which fracture cannot initiate; hence there is a minimum pillar strength. (ii) In specific circumstances (narrow pillars) , once fracture initiates at the pillar edge it must propagate immediately to the pillar centre. This unstable situation is called ""catastrophic"" failure and might be regarded as a model of a pillar ""burst "". (iii) For wider pillars, the failed zone ex tends gradually into the pillar as the loading increases until it reaches the pillar centre when the pillar is deemed to have f ailed. This is called the point of ""ultimate"" failure.The critical pillar widths to avoid catastrophic and ultimate failure can be calculated.A hypothetical analysis of five rib pillars is given to illustrate the application and the results obtained from the model. The model is then used to analyze three case histories taken from the literature. The first demonstrates the applicability of the brittle/pseudo-ductile failure criteria for Pittsburgh coal. The second compares the pillar strength formulae derived here with those of Salamon and Munro(13) and Bieniawskiou . The final case history compares the model analysis with field stress measurements in a yielding pillar. In all cases the model results are compatible with the case histories."

"American Barrick has always balanced its aggressive operating approach with a conservative financial strategy. In fact, what enables their mining team to pursue such aggressive plans with confidence is the conservative financial strategy adhered to by the company. These policies are built on a prudent mix of gold linked financings, equity and gold price hedging.This paper outlines these policies and focusses in particular on American Barrick's gold price hedging program.IntroductionThe company's balance sheet at the end of 1990 clearly shows the wisdom of its conservative policies. Total assets have grown to over US$1 billion; cash has grown to US$312 million and shareholders' equity to US$645 million. All amounts included in this paper are quoted in U.S. dollars. Increased gold production and an effective gold price hedging program also combined to produce record income from operations, earnings and cash flow in 1990.The first half of 1991 is also indicative of the benefits of the company's conservative financial policies. Increasing production, together with its comprehensive gold hedging program, has generated increased earnings, even in a period of falling gold prices.All year-over-year numbers for the first six months are up. Gold production was 36% higher; earnings of $40.2 million $ 0.30 per share - were 46% higher than 1990.Barricks revenue continued to increase despite gold prices remaining unchanged during 1990. Barrick's hedging policy protects the company from falling gold prices on the basis that the upside looks after itself. Their hedging program - including various goldlinked fmancings - enabled Barrick to realize an average price of $437 per ounce of gold sold in 1990, compared with the Comex average gold price for the year of $384 per ounce."

"This document shows the development of a system called the “On-line charge level determination in SAG mills” (abbreviated as Jc). The Jc variable has certainly been difficult to measure due to the relevant number of factors and variables that affect the grinding phenomena inside semi autogenous (SAG) mills. To assess the feasibility stage of the proposed system, it was necessary to carry out two tests in different sized SAG mills, 38´ × 22´ and 36´ × 15´, respectively. In each test, the system was configured with a battery of sensors of the following types: (1) strain gauge, (2) accelerometer, and (3) gyroscope. The first step involved for charge level determinations was to determine kidney foot and shoulder by means of a study of the energy-impacts on shell structures. The second step consisted of correlating the measured grinding operational variables with the actual charge levels obtained from SAG mill crash stops. This system development is extremely useful and relevant for providing approximations about mass balances inside SAG mills. It will be a suitable tool for explaining “tonnes per hour” variations and determining optimal points under various operating conditions.INTRODUCTIONThere has been a growing necessity for technologies capable of obtaining “on-line data” of the main comminution variables in order to increase throughput. Computer systems have taken an important role in providing important solutions by means of processing on-line device signals (commonly referred to as monitoring). In semi autogenous (SAG) milling, there are many examples of monitoring devices that allow the operational staff to obtain detailed information both mechanically and electronically inside a grinding circuit. In this context, a new technology has been developed to obtain “Jc total charge (%) online” in two different SAG mills called Vibro-Energy® System.As part of the analysis performed by JKsimMet® the Jb/Jc was estimated because it has an important impact on SAG mill throughput. Different scenarios were simulated and contrasted at various theoretical Jb/Jc values in a baseline circuit (Figure 1)."
