"The influence of an unconventional lance with a central nozzle on the multiphase fluid flow in a steelmaking converter is studied in this work by means of computer simulations. The lance has four peripheral supersonic nozzles and a vertical central nozzle. Besides, the oxygen flow in the central nozzle is considered independent from the main oxygen supply. Transient two-dimensional numerical simulations were carried out considering just molten steel and gaseous oxygen as the existing phases. Numerical results show that bath agitation and droplet generation are enhanced as a result of the central nozzle. However, the performance of this lance strongly depends on the distance of the lance tip to the molten steel surface and the velocity of the oxygen jet.IntroductionCurrently, two thirds of the world crude steel is produced through the steelmaking oxygen converter [1]. Given the unquestionable economic importance of this technology, any improvement or optimization proposal is welcome. In the majority of current oxygen converters a top oxygen supersonic jet is blown onto the molten steel through a water-cooled lance to eliminate by oxidation some impurities such as carbon and phosphorus. Conventional lances have inclined peripheral nozzles whose number depends on the converter capacity. During the process, a large amount of gases evolves, forming metal droplets and a metal-slag-gas emulsion [2]. The droplets and the resultant emulsion increase the reaction interfacial area, promoting in this way carbon removal and dephosphorization of the molten steel bath [3]. However, during the blowing stage, the emulsion rises towards the lance and converter mouth and frequently forms layers which accumulate in the lance, reducing the life of the lance tip [4, 5]. It is possible that some freezing of the molten metal occurs due to the low oxygen injection temperature, however there are no reports on this. Besides, frequently undesirable operating phenomena such as spitting and slopping may arise as a result of inappropriate blowing practices or bad lance design. In the oxygen steelmaking industry, novel lances design are needed in order to enhance the decaburization rate and the slag formation and, at the same time, preventing operating practices that decrease productivity and move away the shop from safety standards."

A laboratory process based on simple and environmental friendly operation, aimed at recycling of spent Li/MnO2 batteries, is described in this study. This process involves roasting Li/MnO2 batteries in a vacuum furnace at 650°C, followed by selective leaching Li2CO3 from calcined electrode material in distilled water at ambient temperature and controlled crystallization of pure Li2CO3.

A general regular solution model put forward in this paper defines a general interaction parameter that includes both composition and temperature dependence. On the basis of this model, analytic express of solution excess properties was obtained by least square fit using the composition and temperature relations in binary alloy phase diagram. After some solution excess properties analytic expresses of correlated binary alloy system obtained, the analytic express of ternary alloy system could be obtained by superposition of general geometrical model. The ternary alloy system Pb-Sn-Zn has been predicted in terms of this method and the result was very in agreement with actual measured value.

Direct reduction of Cu,Ni,W,VandMo oxides from various industrial wastes the melting of iron and steel in different furnaces was studied by thermodynamic computation and experimental methods. Thermodynamics was used to compute the final partition of the alloying additions between iron-carbon melts and oxides contained in the slag. It was shown that the sequence of the reduction reactions depended on the melt composition as well as temperature. Kinetic factors limited recovery in induction melting, while experimentally measured final partition coefficients were close to equilibrium during EAF melting. The possibility of the partial substitution of expensive ferroalloys, by different industrial wastes containing nonferrous oxides, was evaluated in foundry and mini-mill conditions.

The coal asphalt is combusted at different temperature in a heating cabinet with the temperature limit by 1200°C. By comparing the mass of the remainder of each experiment, the completely combusting temperature of asphalt smoke can be determined. Based on the experimental process of asphalt smoke, a discrete mathematical model of the asphalt smoke combustion is set by theoretic analysis. Through computer programming, the dynamic combustion process of asphalt smoke is calculated to simulate the experimental model. The result of experiment shows that coal asphalt can mostly react upon 500°C and the mass of remainder is 49.41% to initial mass of sample in the condition. The computing result shows that the temperature and the concentration of asphalt smoke influence its burning temperature approximating linearity. The consumed quantity of fuel to ignite the asphalt smoke needs be considered with the two factors.

However, not only will the paper discuss traditional work indicators, it will also explain how to establish the behaviors in the work place that will ultimately ensure successful implementation. Combined with the discussion on indicators will be a discussion on how to tie them to bottom line results and display them in the form of a scorecard. Actual results will be discussed.

Solubility phase equilibrium in the ternary system of Me2+-NH4+-SO42--H2O (Me2+ represented Mn2+, Zn2+ and Fe2+) was studied by the isothermal method at 298K and physicochemical properties of the saturated solution such as density, refractive index and pH were also investigated. The experimental results show that the solubility isothermal phase diagrams of these systems consist of three invariant branches, two invariant points and three crystallization fields. Corresponding to the three crystallization fields, there have three phases of solid, that is MeSO4?nH2O, (NH4)2SO4 and (NH4)2Me(SO4)2?6H2O, respectively. At the eutectic point, the concentration and the refractive indexes of the saturated solution change evidently. Otherwise, the pH value change slowly in all the systems. The calculated results of the density and refractive index agree with the experimental results.

There have been increasing in melting recycled scraps in copper smelting processes, and thus growing interests in the chlorine behavior. In this study, chloride dissolution in FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2slag (SiO2sat.) at 1523 K has been measured with varying in PCl2 from 1.13x10-8 to 1.30x10-7atm. and the oxygen partial pressures encountered in typical copper smelting furnace, i.e. PO2=10-8 to 10-10 atm. Discussion is made on the chloride capacity of FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2 slag in terms of its characteristics and the dissolved chlorine species. It has been shown that the mostreasonable dissolution reaction and chloride capacity can be expressed by the following reactions, where chlorine dissolves in the form of Cl-; here, aO2-, oxygen ion activity, is shown a function of oxygen partial pressure in the atmosphere. "The majority of chromium electroplating operations employ Cr(VI)-based baths. During these processes, Cr(VI) is reduced to Cr(III). Besides Cr(III) other undesirable impurities are present such as iron, copper and nickel. The build-up of the impurities limits the lifetime of the plating solutions. Since the disposal of spent chromic acid baths is expensive and can cause significant environmental degradation, there is increasing interest in finding ways to regenerate waste chromium liquors.In this work, an electrolytic cell separated by microporous ceramic diaphragms was used to regenerate chromium plating solutions. The effect of the ceramic diaphragm structure parameters, such as porosity and pore size, on the performance indicators of the electrochemical reactor (fractional conversion, current efficiency, product yield, specific energy consumption) was investigated.The fractional conversion, the product yield and the current efficiency increased and the specific energy consumption decreased with the decrease in porosity.IntroductionChromic acid is widely used in industrial applications such as steel manufacture, metal finishing industries, aluminium anodising, pasivation of cadmium, magnesium, and zinc, etching of plastics and another industrial operations related with processing ferrous and no ferrous metals [1]. A patent is a right granted by the government to exclude others from making, using, selling, offering to sell, or importing a claimed invention. Once the right is granted, the patentee may use the U.S. Federal Courts to enforce that right. Reading a patent from a litigation perspective is quite different than reading it from a technical perspective. The Judge's interpretation of the claims will affect their scope, and likely the ultimate outcome of a patent case. Additionally, the patent right can be challenged. If done successfully, the patent can be rendered invalid or unenforceable. The likelihood of success, and well as the achievement of other litigation goals is often influenced by the forum where the litigation is initiated. Finally, patent litigation costs are significant, and will weigh heavily in the decision to file (or fight) a patent lawsuit.

The zinc, lead and alumina contents in copper smelting slag are increasing with the increase in waste recycling. The recovery of base metals such as lead and zinc from copper converter slag is important from both an economical and environmental perspective. As a fundamental study of the metal recovery by reduction process, activity coefficients of ZnO and PbO in the CaO-SiO2-FeOx-5mass%AlO1.5 slag under iron saturation at 1573K are derived from the data of slag-metal equilibrium experiments. On the basis of the obtained data, the activity coefficients of ZnO and PbO in the CaO-SiO2-FeOx-5mass%AlO1.5 slag were compared with those of the CaO-SiO2-FeOx ternary system. Addition of alumina increases activities coefficient of ZnO and PbO in SiO2 rich side of the slag, and decreases them in CaO rich side.

"The present work investigated the influence of Fe+2 initial concentrations in the bioleaching of copper from printed circuit board using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans-LR. Printed circuit boards were collected from obsolete computers and mechanically processed through size reduction followed by magnetic separation. The bacteria Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans-LR were grown and adapted in presence of printed circuit boards. A shake flask study was carried out on the printed circuit boards samples (non-magnetic fraction) using a rotary shaker under the following fixed conditions (185 rpm, 30°C). The bioleaching efficiency was evaluated by comparison between the concentration in the initial sample and in the leached liquor, pH of the medium and concentration of ferrous iron produced. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (1CP-OES) was used to determine the metals concentration. The results showed that Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans-LR leached 63% copper from printed circuit boards using supplemented medium with Fe+2.IntroductionThe waste of electric and electronic equipment is generated by discarding of equipment such as obsolete computers and cell phones which is stimulated by the technology innovations and it has been growing each year. Because of the amount that has been accumulated it has become a prominent environmental problem but also can be a source of valuable materials, such precious and base metals [1,2] The printed circuit boards are found in almost all electric and electronic equipment being composed of polymers, ceramics and metals and can be an alternative source to recover base and precious metals. The precious metals are used in the printed circuit boards to protect against oxidation and base metals because of its conducting properties [3]. The heterogeneous composition of printed circuit board is a limiting factor in the recycling processes and the metals concentrations also range."
