On the occasion of this symposium in my name, I reflect upon the contributions of my academic mentors and early associates who helped shape my professional career. I was fortunate to have these people around me during my graduate work and at the start of my professional career. In forming my view of the technical field and career, they represented academia, research institutions, industry, and different parts of the world.
