HE who enters a mining claim within an Indian reservation of the United States of America acquires no rights thereby, because of the fact that the lands within such Indian reservation are not a part of the public domain, and cannot be located or acquired as mineral land. However, where such an entry is authorized as to a particular reservation by an Act of Congress, such claims as may be entered under such authorization are thereby segregated from the reservation, and the Indian title is extinguished. Under the Choctaw Constitution, any citizen of that nation, in other words any Choctaw Indian, who discovered a coal mine, acquired an exclusive right to all coal within a radius of 1 mile. The laws of the Chickasaw nation provided for the formation of corporations to develop coal and other mines, with authority to contract with others to develop and work the mines. Under these laws, leases were made; but Congress subsequently abrogated all existing leases, prohibited all persons from receiving royalties from such mines, and provided that all coal within the nation should remain the common property of the tribes. Such leases are now expressly prohibited by an Act of Congress (32 United States Statutes at Large, 655). All leases of mineral lands upon Indian reservations must now be made under regulations promulgated by the Secretary of the Interior, and the royalties must be paid into the United States Treasury for the benefit of the tribes. In Canada the Indians have no rights to the royal mines and minerals, and the government can make no stipulation with the Indians which would affect the rights of the Province in which the lands are situated. Therefore, while it is true that under our present law no rights can be acquired to a mining claim within an Indian reservation, it seems to be fully within the authority of Congress to make laws, giving such rights to mineral locators as it may deem necessary or expedient.

IN the study of the structure or the properties of a series of alloys or nonmetallic compounds, it is often advantageous to express the com-position not as percentage by weight, according to which the material is always made up and analyzed, but as the atomic percentage of the two constituents. The conversion from the one to the other is repre-sented by the formulas: 100A 100x Y x 100 ? x/A A [1] A+ B x + A/B(100-x) X _ 100yA 100y [2] yA+(100-y)B or y+A(100-y) where x and y are the weight and atomic percentages respectively of the element of atomic weight A, and (100 - x) and (100 - y) are the per-centages by weight and by atoms respectively of the element of atomic weight B. While calculations according to these formulas are simple, they are' time consuming if several conversions have to be made. In 1931 Water-man' constructed a nomograph for performing the conversion, but this did not permit an accuracy greater than about 1 per cent to be obtained in the neighborhood of 50 per cent. Olander2 has proposed a graphic method simpler than Waterman's and one that gives a uniform precision throughout the entire scale. The possible accuracy is about 0.5 per cent of the whole, depending on the size and accuracy of the coordinate paper used. Recently, Hermann3 has described a slide rule for making the calculations. There is a dearth of information on the economic threat of silicosis. Even the insurance companies and rating bureaus are in a quandary, and the majority of them avoid any action that will stir up an awakened public consciousness of the serious nature of this industrial hazard. Individual claims for $100,000 are now common in silicosis lawsuits. Because of ('hidden costs," in lowered plant efficiency, the total cost of this disease to industry is probably four times its apparent direct cost. The direct costs vary with the labor policies of the employer and with the labor legislation in force. Direct costs may originate in three ways: (1) voluntary assumption by the employer of medical expenses and loss of earning power of stricken employees; (2) state enforcement of industrial disease compensation acts; and (3) awards or settlements after suits in common law. Examples are offered in the last two classifications. In the Rand, South Africa, compensation laws are in effect and in approximately 20 years prior to 1932 about $65,000,000 has been awarded for silicosis and an additional liability of $34,000,000 incurred, or an average of about t5,000,000 per year. During 1932 silicosis compensation on the Rand was about $6,000,000. No figures are available for the direct capital or operating costs for preventive measures there, nor for the additional "hidden costs." It might be reasonable to assume that silicosis has cost the gold-mining industry of South Africa twenty to twenty-five millions of dollars per year. It is estimated that common-law silicosis claims have, in the last few years, aggregated $50,000,000 in New York State alone and have exceeded $300,000,000 in the United States. Attention is called to the involved nature of the insurance situation for industrial diseases in contrast to accidents. The indeterminant, insidious nature of silicosis makes it particularly difficult to predict necessary insurance premiums and reserves. The serious hazard of this disease was not properly appreciated by either insurance companies or industrialists, so sufficient study has not been given its causation, prevention, detection, treatment, and compensation. THOUGH born in England-on Nov. 23, 1372 William Wraith was brought to this country at the age of ten. Eight years later he entered the University of Illinois, transferring to the Michigan College of Mines where he got his E.M. in 1894. For the next three years he was a mine surveyor for the fuel department of the Santa Fe Railroad. Then he got into the copper-mining industry, which has occupied his attention for the last forty years. First he was engineer, at Butte, for the Boston & Montana company, and then helped to build the Washoe smelter at Anaconda, of which he was assistant superintendent from 1906 to 1913. The Anaconda company then sent him to Salt Lake City as manager of its subsidiary.

The precipitation of the Feab and Fe,Ti Laves phases (MgZn, type, C14) from Fe-Nb and Fe-Ti solid solutions, respectively, has been studied in the temperature range 500" to 800°C using hardness measurements, light and electron microscopy, and X-ray and electron diffraction. The Fe-Nb alloys contained 0.96, 1.67, and 3.80 pct Nb and the Fe-Ti alloys 3.5, 5.8, and 8.8 pct Ti. In both systems only the equilibrium Laves phase is formed, with nucleation occurring at grain boundaries, at dislocations, and in the matrix. No cellular precipitation or transition phases were observed. The precipitation of the Laves phase in a fine dispersion leads to significant hardening in both systems. The hardness of the aged alloys is proportional to the reciprocal of the square root of the interparticle spacing. The maximum solid solubility of titanium in a! iron is 9.0 pct Ti at 1280°C. THE precipitation of the FezNb and FezTi Laves phases (MgZn2 type, C 14) from Fe-Nb and Fe-Ti solid solutions, respectively, has been investigated as part of a continuing study of the mechanisms of precipitation from ferritic binary iron-base alloys. The iron-rich portions of the Fe-Nb and Fe-Ti phase diagrams are shown in Fig. l(a) and l(b). The Fe-Nb diagram is essentially that given by ansen' with the more recent work of Hume-Rothery and Gibson2 added. Goldschmidt3 indicates that the FezNb Laves phase has a solubility extending from 32 to 55 wt pct Nb. The Fe-Ti diagram is also essentially that reported by Hansen.l The recent results of Nishimura and kamei, Murakami, Kimura, and Nishimura,' indicate that the FezTi Laves phase has a solubility extending from 22.5 to 30.5 wt pct Ti. The L/6 + FezTi eutectic temperature of 1298°C indicated by Kornilov and oriskina' has been adopted. The addition of niobium or titanium to iron lowers the 6 — y transformation temperature and raises the y — a! transformation temperature. This results in a closed y field in the Fe-Ti system, but the lower solubility of niobium in a! (6) iron results in a eutec-toid, 6 — y + FezNb, at 1200°C, and a peritectoid, y + FezNb —-a, at 989°C in the Fe-Nb system. The maximum solubility of niobium is reported to be 4.5 wt pct in 6 iron,' 1.0 wt pct in y iron,7 and 1.8 wt pct in a iron.' Some results from the present work indicate that the maximum solubility in a! iron is actually less than 0.96 wt pct Nb. The maximum solubility of titanium in a! (6) iron is somewhat uncertain since the early work of To faute and Butting-haus indicated a value of 6.0 wt pct while later work of Kornilov and Boriskina6 yielded a value of 14.0 wt pct. The present work indicates that the maximum solubility is actually 9.0 wt pct. In both systems the phase in equilibrium with the iron-base solid solutions is a Laves phase (Mg znztype, C14), FezNb or FezTi. Both of these Laves phases have a wide range of Solubility. The precipitation-hardening behavior of Fe-Nb or Fe-Ti alloys has not been studied extensively. Genders and Harrison' reported that binary Fe-Nb alloys hardened upon aging. Peter and Fisher7 studied the mechanical properties of Fe-Nb and Fe-Ti alloys quenched from different phase fields.

Williams numbers his acquaintances in the mineral industries by the thousands and h because his principal hobby is liking human beings, most of his acquaintancs are also his friends. Clyde is one of the many outstanding metallurgist, in the United States who started as a chemist. After graduating from the University of Utah in 1915 he was successively chemist for U.S. Smelting Refining and Mining Co., and at the Bureau of Mines station at Ithaca, N.Y. He then got into, metallurgical work and in 1920 he was appointed superintendent of the Northwest Station of the Bureau of Mines at, Seattle. Subsequently he was assistant to H. A detailed study of texture developmenf in poly crystalline copper atzd 70-30 brass has been completed. Textural changes as a function of deformation are shoum by pole jigmres and by intensity measurements oF- various rejlectiotzs from the rolling plane and the rolling direction. These examinations were accompanied by measurements of stacking fault frequency, hardness changes, and microstructure. Some of the results were briefly presented earlier. Additional results reported here are consistent with the idea that deformation faulting or slip by partial dislocations is of primary importance in the formation of deformation textures in fcc metals. lo examine the idea that deformation faulting is of primary importance in determining whether the texture is the copper type or the brass type an extensive study of the development of polycrystalline textures in copper and 70-30 brass was initiated. Besides the determination of complete pole figures, the intensities of the various reflections from both the rolling plane and the plane perpendicular to the rolling direction, the peak shifts due to deformation stacking faults, and the hardness of the rolled specimens were examined at various reductions from 10 to 99 or 99.5 pct. Mi-crostructures were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Some of the results were briefly presented in an earlier publication.' Since then, additional information has been obtained. This is given in the present paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material and Specimen Preparation. The material used was a commercial electrolytic copper bar 1i in. wide and 2 in. thick and a 70-30 brass bar la in. wide and 1i in. thick. Chemical analysis indicated a purity of 99.97 pct for the copper, with 0.025 pct 0 as the major impurity. The 70-30 brass was of higher purity with 0.0016 pct 0 as the major impurity. Extreme care was taken in the preparation of the starting material to insure uniformly fine grains with a nearly random initial texture. The two bars were first cold-forged and then annealed to eliminate any original texture. The grains were then refined by several cold rolling (approx 30 pct reduction) and annealing treatments. The + -hr anneals were carried out in a salt bath at 390" to 440°C for copper and at 490°C for brass. The resulting penultimate grain size was 0.06 mm for copper and 0.03 mm for brass, and both showed very little preferred orientation. The number of prior cold rolling and annealing cycles was such that the final thickness after various final reductions of 10 to 95 (for brass) or 99 (for copper) pct was the same (0.020 in.). These annealed strips were rolled in two directions by reversing end for end between passes according to the following schedule: 0.006 in. per pass to 0.100 in., 0.003 in. per pass to 0.050 in., 0.002 in. per pass to 0.025 in., 0.001 in. per pass to 0.020 in. Texture Determination. The development of rolling textures was studied by examining complete pole figures determined from the (111) reflection. Specimens thinned from one face of the strip to half thickness (0.010 in.) were used to obtain the central portion of the pole figures, while specimens thinned from both faces to 0.003 in. were used to obtain the peripheral portion. The reflection and transmission techniques have been described previously. In addition to X-rav pole figures, texture development was also studied b; examining the intensity variation of the (Ill), (200), (2201, (311), (331), (420), and (442) reflections from the rolling plane and from the plane normal to the rolling direction, as a function of deformation. The same specimens used for the central portion of the pole figures were used for the intensity measurements of the various reflections from the rolling plane. For intensity measurements from the plane normal to the rolling direction, composite specimens were prepared by mounting sections cut parallel to the transverse direction of the strip. An epoxy resin was used to bond these sections together, and the entire composite was then mounted in a cold-setting resin to facilitate subsequent polishing and etching to remove distorted metal at the cut. The intensities were expressed in units of the integrated intensities measured from an annealed copper specimen having almost no preferred orientation. Stacking Fault Frequency Determination. Following the analysis of Warren: the stacking fault frequency, a, was determined from the change in the peak separation (A%) of two neighboring reflections of a deformed specimen, as compared with the normal peak separations of a fully annealed specimen. To obtain sufficient intensities for the second-order reflections, (222) and (400), composite specimens were prepared from parallel sections cut from the strip at 30 deg to the rolling direction for copper and 25 deg for the brass.* From texture data, these sections are known to contain a large population of both (111) and (200) planes. Since residual stresses can also cause X-ray line shifts (the direction of line shifts depends upon the sign of the stress), the use of composite specimens consisting of sectioned planes should help compensate for these effects as the residual stresses change sign from the surface to the central section of a rolled strip. Discussion of the paper of H. 0. Hofman, presented at the Canal Zone meeting, November, 1910, and printed in Bulletin No. 42, June, 1910, pp. 473 to 497. JAMES W. NEILL, Pasadena, Cal. (communication to the Secretary *) :-Professor Hofman's paper brings the art up to . date. As I was one of the pioneers in this business, I beg to give the following incomplete data regarding my efforts in this line. In the year 1883, while I was in charge of the smelting-operations at Mine La Motte, Mo., there was at the concentrator an unusually large production of a middle product, locally called "iron," which carried considerable values in nickel and cobalt, and which it was desirable, for this reason, to treat by itself. The works could not spare a furnace for the purpose; and to handle this product I improvised a "roast-hearth " from an old " lead-hearth." This was a small cast-iron furnace of the usual construction, about 2 by 4 ft. in dimensions, with a hollow cast-iron back, through which the wind circulated before entering the tuyeres. I had a cast-iron grate made to fit this hearth, and placed it flush with the lip, or apron, and above the tuyeres. On this grate, which had round holes about 0.25 in. in diameter, and a total surface of about 20 by 40 in., I roasted the nickeliferous pyrite product; starting the fire with kindling, then adding charcoal, and then gradually feeding the sulphides with a shovel, so as to cover the fire, choke down blow-holes, and get an even bed. Blast at a pressure of 3 or 4 oz. was supplied by a fail-blower. When a cake of roasted material had formed, it was removed with a steel bar, or fork, to the lip of the furnace, and thence into a wheel-barrow.. The fine material which had remained unmelted, but very hot, on top of the cake would promptly ignite when the cake was broken up and removed. Application of shrinkage stoping methods, without filling, in the mining of large silver-gold orebodies in the Mogollon district, where the ore is hard and wall rocks stand well without timbering and where veins make little water. Vertical and inclined shafts in use with both surface and underground hoisting stations. Storage pockets used on main hoisting levels, with electric signals and telephones for communication. Power is generated by De La Vergne engines having a total sea-level rating of 1540 hp. On account of the remote location of the camp, transportation is an important item of expense, amounting in 1922 to $0.641 per ton of ore milled or $0.265 per ton-mile on all freight hauled. THE Mogollon mining district is in the southwestern part of New Mexico near the southern end of the Mogollon range, from which the district takes its name. The town of Mogollon is but 37 1/2 mi. in an air line northeast of Clifton, Ariz. The air-line distance from Silver City is 52 1/2 mi. and from Tyrone, 57 mi. Supplies are transported by motor truck from Silver City. The distance by road is 75 mi., half of which is an improved highway of modern construction. Transportation has always - been a large item of expense in carrying on operations in the district. Valuable ore is said to have been discovered in the Mogollon Mountains as early as 1870 but the first regular prospecting was carried on in 1875, by James C. Cooney, a sergeant from Fort Bayard. His discovery of rich silver-copper ores in the region of Mineral Creek led to the establishment of the Camp of Cooney. Remote from any settlements where there was a semblance of law and order, and harassed by the Apaches, development was slow and nearly 10 years elapsed before the village of Mogollon was established on Silver Creek. Prospecting in this section of the district had disclosed the outcrops of several promising veins containing silver-gold ores. Among the early claims located were the Last Chance, Top and Confidence, on what has proved to be the most productive vein in the district.

J. J. Predali and J. M. Cases (Attachè de Recherche and Charge de Recherche, respectively, Centre de Recherches sur la Valorisation des Minerais, Institut Polytechnique de Nancy, Nancy, France)-The role of CO, in carbonate flotation is one of the parameters of a complex phenomenon: the adsorption of salts of fatty acids onto minerals. The authors therefore must be congratulated for their work. Their experimental results suggest some questions: 1) Recovery with C02, benzoic acid, or HCl, look very similar [(Fig. 1)] to that with the use of air; however, the recovery decreases very slightly (<10%). But in these two kinds of experiments, two parameters are different: the pH which is near 5.8 (with C02) becomes 9.1(without C02) and the concentration of Ca* I x 10-3 mole per 1 (without C02) becomes 1.9 X 10&apos; mole per 1 (without COO. 2) Adsorption experiments (Fig. 2) permit computing the surface coverage 9 which is 7.4% (without C02) and 8% (without CO_.) for an initial concentration of 12 X 10-6 mole per 1 in sodium oleate. It seems doubtful to us that this small variation can produce large increases of the recovery in flotation. 3) It is difficult to correlate adsoption and flotation experiments because they do not seem to have been done with the same size of particles. The concentration needed to obtain 95% recovery (Fig. 1) is about 3.0 X 10_" mole per l, that is, 1.13 X 10-6 mole for about

THE Institute of Metals Division of the A. I. M. E. has joined with the American Society for Steel Treating and the American Welding Society in support of National Metal Week in Philadelphia, Oct. 8 to 12. Individual and joint technical sessions, plant inspection trips, and a general exposition to be held in Commercial Museum have all been arranged. With the coming of the Institute of Metals Division into the circle, the scope of the exposition has been broadened to cover non-ferrous metals, and exhibits of much interest are promised. Headquarters for the Institute of Metals and the American Society for Steel Treating will be at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel, and for the American Welding Society at the Bellevue-Stratford. The American Society for Steel Treating and the Welding Society will hold technical sessions each forenoon at their hotel headquarters. The Institute of Metals Division will hold sessions Tuesday morning and Wednesday and Thursday afternoons; that for Wednesday being a joint session with the American Society for Steel Treating. The latter society will hold independent afternoon sessions on Thursday and Friday. Registration and information desks will be open at the hotels throughout the week, and an attractive program of entertainments has been arranged.

Since the appearance of the paper, "Solution of the Equations of Un-steady State Two-Phase Flow in Oil Reservoirs," by W. J. West, W. W. Garvin, and J. W. Sheldon,&apos; a two-fold investigation of this subject has been carried out. One objective of the investigation has been to deter-mine the feasibility of solving such problems 7on a medium-size com-puter such as the Datatron*, and the other objective has been to in-vestigate the application of such cal-culations to experimental and theo-retical petroleum reservoir research. In the first Datatron calculations, the fluid and rock properties published by West, et al, were used, together with the published equations describ-ing the system. Details of the formu-lation not given in the original paper are discussed in the Appendix to this note. Reference should be made to the subject paper for the complete equations and defintion of symbols. An unexpected result of this in-vestigation was the discovery that the linear solution published by West was in error. Thus, in addition to describing the Datatron solutions and to discussing certain numerical diffi-culties which will be encountered if one uses the published method of solution, the purpose of this note is to indicate the nature of this error. LINEAR FLOW Since the linear case requires a minimum amount of scaling, a fixed-decimal point Datatron program was written for the one-dimensional flow problem and an attempt was made to duplicate the solution described by West. In the case described, fluid was produced at a constant rate, Q, until such time as well pressure reached 0.04. Production was then continued at constant pressure. From the constants and curves given by West it was determined that the ini-tial constant production rate could be approximated by Q = 0.007. An ini-tial dimensionless time step ?t = 0.434 X 10 - "as used, and each suc-cessive time step was doubled until a value of = 0.444 was reached. This constant interval was then used for the remainder of the solution. In subsequent solutions, several varia-tions in the time schedule were em-ployed, including smaller time steps and slower rates of increase in the time steps. In all cases, almost identical results were obtained regardless of the time schedule employed. However, as described below, it was noted that the time schedule had some influence on the rate of convergence of the solutions. As a check on the accuracy of the solution, the cumulative production at each time step was calculated using the two methods described in the Appendix. Satisfactory agreement was observed with the differences in these two values of the order of two parts in 50,000. It should be noted that the mass balance check as described is of questionable value, particularly with regard to the well pressure and saturation. This is especially true in the radial solution where pressure and saturation values near the wellbore would make only a negligible contribution to the numer-ical integration. It is believed, how-ever, that such a comparison is ot value in determining the over-all accuracy of a solution. In comparing the Datatron solu-tion with that published by West it was discovered that in the later stages of depletion, the pressures near the well declined more rapidly in our solution than in the West solution, and that the limiting well pressure of 0.04 was reached at an earlier time than that originally reported. It thus became evident that it would be impossible to duplicate the production schedule described by West and a constant rate of production was maintained until the well pressure was equal to 0.0. A representative comparison of the results published by West with those obtained in this investigation is shown in Fig. 1, which is a plot of GOR as a function of cumulative recovery. These two curves should be in agreement until a cumulative recovery is reached which corresponds to a well pressure of 0.04 — for the Datatron solution, a recovery of approximately 5.6 per cent. ALLOYS with a dispersed second phase in a metallic matrix are generally much stronger than the matrix itself. Plastic deformation in dispersion-strengthened alloys is usually confined to the matrix phase when recovery processes are active, while in the absence of recovery both phases may yield.&apos; The alloy system studied in the present research was WC-12 wt pct Co and consisted of noncoherent WC particles dispersed in the cobalt matrix. Some particle-to-particle contact existed but not enough to produce a continuous WC skeleton. The microstruc-ture of the WC particles was characterized by very straight edges, forming a trapezoidal shape in any plane of polish. Previous investigations with WC-Co alloys at room temperature have shown that fracture of the WC particles occurs in transverse rupture testing.&apos; Room-temperature slip was reported for WC particles after indentation for hardness measurements.3 Elevated-temperature deformation of WC particles in a WC-12 pct Co alloy was suggested by recent electron microscope studies of specimens deformed at 900&apos; to 1000°C.4 In highly deformed alloys, the WC edges were serrated in contrast to the usual straight or smooth appearance. WC-12 pct Co and WC-15 pct Co alloys have been previously studied under elevated-temperature com-pressive-creep conditions by the present authors. Electron microscope studies of two-stage replicas from deformed specimens showed no evidence of slip or fracture of the WC particles. These specimens were brought to temperature and allowed to equilibrate prior to the application of the creep load. It was believed that the load-application rate, a crosshead speed of 0.005 in. per min on an Instron universal testing machine, was sufficiently low that recovery within the cobalt matrix was sufficient to limit the deformation to this matrix. A series of experiments was performed to evaluate the influence of loading rate on the deformation of WC-Co alloys. A WC-12 pct Co alloy was selected for these determinations. The average WC particle size was 4.45 p with an average linear separation between particles of 0.59 p. The selected temperature was 800°C and was monitored with a Chromel-Alumel thermocouple attached to the specimen. Testing was conducted in an argon-atmosphere chamber to prevent oxidation of the WC-Co specimens. This chamber was mounted on an Instron universal testing machine equipped to apply the load at a fixed rate. Each specimen was loaded to 110,000 psi compression stress at 0.05 and 0.5 in. per min. The loading rate was monitored prior to insertion of the test chamber and was found to be almost precisely the nominal rate selected. The specimens were raised to temperature and held to equilibrate with the surroundings, and then the load was applied and held for 4 hr to duplicate the exposure time utilized for the creep specimens. The time to reach full load at a crosshead speed of 0.005 in. per min was some 500 sec and was reduced to 50 and 5 sec as the loading rate was increased to 0.05 and 0.5 in, per min, respectively. The model developed by Ansell,&apos; when recovery processes do not occur, considers that fracture or deformation of the dispersed particles is necessary to relieve back stresses on dislocation sources and allow dislocations piled up against particles to sweep out in the matrix to cause plastic deformation; he further states that, even at elevated temperatures, the dispersed-particle deformation is necessary for yielding in the absence of recovery. For the case of straight dislocation segments piled up against a straight barrier, such as the straight-sided WC particles, the shear stress, 7 exerted on a particle is: where h is the spacing between particles (0.59 p), a is the applied stress (110,000 psi), p, is the shear modulus of the matrix (6.7 X lo6 psi at 80O°C), and b is the Burgers vector of the matrix dislocation. Further details of the 97th meeting of the Institute, at Spokane, have been sent to members in the Special Circular of May 8, 1909, and for convenience a summary of the additional information is given later in this announcement. In spite of the present small number who have joined the party, final arrangements have been made to complete the itinerary given in the circular. It is greatly to be desired, both in behalf of the Institute and in recognition of the special courtesies to be extended on the trip, that the party be made larger. Exceptional facilities to visit the many mines and smelters have been freely provided; and members are requested to make all reasonable effort to attend the meeting at Spokane and participate in the excursions. . For those who cannot take the entire trip, it may be possible to provide special Pullman accommodations after leaving the Yellowstone Park. In order to make the necessary arrangements, however, the names of members and guests contemplating this partial trip should be sent at once to Mr. Theodore Dwight, .39 West 39th St., New York, N. Y. A special train of Pullman cars will leave Chicago September 16. This train will be side-tracked at all places visited, and the sleepers will be available for lodging and the dining-car for meals (luring the entire trip, except while taking the tour through the Yellowstone Park. The general cost of the trip per member will be $300, which includes transportation, berth, and meals for the entire trip from Chicago back to Chicago, almost 6,000 miles, and the tour through Yellowstone Park, occupying in all about 30 days. An investigation was carried out to determine the effect of Ca-Si additions on the dissolved oxygen content of liquid steel. An apparent equilibrium was reached after holding the melt for some time when the total oxygen content of the melt was identical with the dissolved oxygen. Results of the investigation show that for deoxidation with silicon and manganese the apparent equilibrium is reached after 8 to 12 min and the oxygen content of the melt is in good agreement with values reported in the literature for similar steel compositions. Ca-Si additions decrease the dissolved oxygen content appreciably below that obtained with Si-Mn deoxidation. It is postulated that some calcium dissolved in liquid steel at the time of its vaporization combines with dissolved oxygen to form CaO which then fluxes the manganese silicate, thereby lowering the activity of the deoxidation products. Slow flotation of calcium silicate inclusions is attributed to their slower growth rate. An addition of aluminum (to yield <0.005 pct Alsol) prior to introduction of Ca-Si improves the kinetics of removal of resulting deoxidation products. WITH the introduction of continuous casting of billets and blooms, application of calcium-containing alloys for deoxidation purposes has gained new interest. More so than in conventional ingot casting, the degree of control of the dissolved and total oxygen contents in steel for continuous casting can determine the success or failure of the operation because these affect both surface (pinholes) and internal quality of the billets. Of the available deoxidizers, only silicon has so far found wide application. However, in the typical range of application (0.20/0.30 pct Si), it is too weak a deoxidizer to suppress pinhole frequency to the level desirable for all but the least demanding appli-cations (approximately 10/50 pinholes per sq ft, de-pending on degree of subsequent reduction). On the other hand, Vincent&apos; has shown that it requires ap-proximately 0.007/0.008 pct A1 soluble in the steel to suppress pinhole formation to <10 pinholes per sq ft. In view of the difficulty of consistently maintaining this aluminum level and the associated problem of tundish nozzle constriction2 when aluminum is added to the ladle, steelmakers have searched for other de-oxidation alloys to circumvent the problem. Calcium-containing alloys offer such a possibility. When employed as a partial substitute for silicon, CaSi (30 pct Ca/60 pct Si) additions are reported to yield adequate pinhole contro1.3 Its use simultaneously preserves the "fluidity" of the steel and ensures good castability.4 Oxygen contents as low as 0.007 to 0.014 pct have been obtained with CaSi additions varying between 3 to 8 lb per ton.5-7 Due to the high degree of vaporization of calcium at the temperature of molten steel and the different methods used to introduce it into the liquid, the reported results show considerable scatter and lack of consistency. According to several investiga- deoxidation tors, the flotation characteristics of CaSi products are not as favorable as those found for alumi-num but are similar to those established for silicates with low alumina content.678 Thus, cleanliness ratings were improved when CaSi was replaced by a com-bination of Si + A1 followed by CaMnSi additions.5,9 In view of the lack of a comprehensive description of the deoxidation potential of CaSi alloys, a study was undertaken of the effect of CaSi additions on oxygen content in comparison to Si + Mn and Si + Mn + Al. The alloy chosen for this study contained 63 pct Si, 32 pct Ca, <3 pct Al, and 2.5 pct Fe. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experiments were divided in three groups as shown in Table I. In each group, the CaSi addition was increased successively while maintaining the melt composition constant. The experiments in the third group were designed to determine the effect of prede-oxidation with small amounts of aluminum. Ingot iron, containing 0.02 to 0.03 pct C and 0.03 to 0.05 pct Mn, was melted in a 100-lb magnesia crucible. Pig iron was added to the melt under air in an induction furnace to attain the desired carbon content of 0.05 to 0.15 pct and thereby control the initial oxygen content of the melt between 0.04 and 0.015 pct. After removal of the slag, the furnace was sealed and argon was introduced through an opening in the graphite cover, Fig. 1. When the desired temperature was reached, electrolytic manganese was added to the melt and pin samples were taken (7 mm silica tubing) to establish initial oxygen content. To obtain maximum efficiency, CaSi and metallic silicon were introduced in a sealed steel pipe into the bath. This procedure assured minimum loss of calcium through vaporization as the deoxidants were always released at the bottom of the melt. Samples were taken at regular intervals and quenched in water. Temperature of the bath was measured with a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple. Portions of the pin sample were used for oxygen analysis; five determinations per sample were made to obtain average oxygen content. Oxygen analyses were made by the inert carrier gas fusion method with frequent cross checks with the vacuum fusion method.

ThE published U-Ru equilibrium diagram indicates the existence of six intermetallic compounds in this system.&apos; The structure of only two of the compounds, u2Ru2,3 and URU3,4 have been identified. This communication reports on the crystal structure and density of Uau3, which is formed by a peritectoid transformation at 1025° ± 5°C: U3Ru4 + U3Ru5 = U2Ru3. An alloy with the stoichiometric formula U2Ru3 was prepared by arc melting electrolytic uranium and ruthenium of 99.9 pct purity on a water-cooled copper hearth under an argon atmosphere. After homo-genization at 1000°C for 3 days, a metallographic examination revealed that the peritectoid transformation was complete and less than 5 pct of a second phase was present. A powdered sample, obtained by crushing the brittle compound, was annealed for 1 hr at 1000°C and air-cooled. Debye-Scherrer patterns were obtained with filtered CrKa, FeKa, CoKa, or CuKa radiation. The X-ray patterns of U2Ru3 weFe indexed as an fcc structure with a. = 12.895 0.00lA. The unit-cell constant and its standard deviation were calculated by a computer program described by Mueller, Heaton, and Miller.5 The density, measured by an immersion method, was 14.45 g cm-3. A calculated density of 14.48 g cm-3 was obtained on the assumption that twenty-four formula units (120 atoms) comprise a unit cell. The space group is either oh7 Fd3m, or the less symmetric, T4h, Fd3, since reflections indexed as hk0 with h + k + 4n are absent. All values of h2 + k2 + 12 permitted by both space groups are listed in Table I together with dc, do, and I. values. The calculated d spacings were obtained by the computer program of Mueller, Meyer, and simonsen.6 The observed d spacings above 0.77A were obtained from X-ray" patterns prepared with CuKa radiation, above 0.90A with CoKa radiaaion, above 0.98A with FeKa radiation, and above 1.16A with CrKa radiation. An attempt was made to identify the crystal structure of U2Ru3 by comparison with published data on other A2B3 compounds. A recent compilation7 of intermetallic compounds lists thirty-two structure types with the A2B3 stoichiometry. Only two of the structure types are fcc and they are Sb2O3(r), senarmontite, with 16 Sb2O3 per unit cell, and In2Te3 for which several structures have been proposed.8 However, the two cases cited do not have twenty-four formula units in the unit cell. We therefore, cannot identify UPRU3 with any of the other known A2B3 compounds. Ternary alloys were made in which 5 at. pct Os, Rh, or A1 were substituted for 5 pct of the Ru in U2Ru3. The osmium substitution increased the unit cell constant to 12.899 * .001A, which is to be expected since the atomic volume of osmium is slightly larger than
