The Alabama flake-graphite industry has flourished only in times of war when importations of foreign graphite for crucible use have been greatly curtailed or cut off. World War I was a boom period and in 1918 some 30 plants produced 7,795,475 lb. of flake graphite. The industry languished following the war and no graphite was produced from 1929 to 1939. The Federal Bureau of Mines began investigating the Alabama graphite deposits in 1940 and worked out modern recovery methods that were applied to production during part of World War II. A prospecting program disclosed reserves of over 25 million tons of graphitic schists. In 1942 the War Production Board authorized the enlargement of the only plant then producing flake graphite and the construction of two new plants. Production of flake graphite from these three plants in 1943 is estimated at 8,100,000 lb. Increased imports from Madagascar late in 1943 shut down one of the new plants and curtailed production at the other. Alabama flake graphite has not yet been able to compete with Madagascar graphite for use in the manufacture of any but small graphite crucibles. The future of the industry must depend on meeting the higher carbon content demanded for other uses.

COMPLETION of the Rainbow Bridge across the Niagara River and Gorge this fall marks a new page of achievement in the annals of bridge- building. Symbolic of the amity between two great nations, the new bridge provides an additional gateway across the most peaceful border in the world. Ground was broken for the project May 16. 1940, at a site close to that formally occupied by the Falls View Bridge which was destroyed by a record ice jam in 1938. At this point, about 2000 ft. deep and 1000 ft. downstream from the American Falls, the gorge is about 200 ft. deep and 1000 ft. wide. The great steel arch of the bridge has a span of 950 ft. and rises from its supporting abutments on the American and Canadian sides of the river to the level of the top of the gorge. This is said to be the longest hingeless arch in the world.

Finances Due to the growth of the activities of the United Engineering Society, it was found desirable early in the year to consolidate the various accounts and financial records of the Society and of the Library, heretofore kept separately, and to have all the data pertaining to the building and its operation in the charge of one individual. An assistant secretary especially assigned to this work has been appointed, and a separate office has been established. The Finance Committee has had all of the records brought fully to date and has prepared a new set of account books to meet the new conditions. Quantitatiue studies of the deformation texture in drawn tungsten wives were made by the X-vay dif-fractottletetr. Experimental results show that the diffraction Intensities are equal to tilose pvedicted from the (1 10). fiber lexlure but the angxla), spreads of. diffraction peaks in the pole distribution curres are different for different diffraction planes and directions. For this reason a modified (110) fiber lextuve model, in which a kind of anisotropy is assumed, is proposed to explain the results. According to this model the poles lying on a line directing front the (110) to the (110) poles in the (1 10) standard stereograpllic projection should show spreads which are different from those lyitlg on a line directing from the (001) to the (001) poles, which is confirmed by the experiments. The anisolvopy and the spveads of the pole positions are large at the outer part of the wires and decrease gradually lowards the inside of the wire. The possibilily of occurrence of such anisolropy in irrelals with fcc stvuctures is discltssed. THE deformation texture of drawn tungsten wires has been assumed by different investigators to be the simple ( 110) fiber texture.' Recently, however, Leber2,3 has shown that a swaged tungsten rod has a cylindrical texture. It changes gradually to the (110) fiber texture by drawing through dies. However, even after drawing to 0.25 mm in diam, the cylindrical texture can still be found in wires together with the (110) fiber texture. This was deduced from the pole figures obtained from the longitudinal section of these wires. Use was made also of quantitative measurements of the pole distribution curves. Leber stated that the angular spread of the pole distribution curves (henceforward called dispersions) are quite different for (400) 45 deg and (400) 90 deg: the former is always larger than the latter. This inequality is accompanied by deviations of the diffraction intensities from the theoretical values for the ( 110) fiber texture. Bhandary and cullity4 have reported similar results on iron wire and explained them by assuming a cylindrical texture. Both Leber3 and Bhandary4 used only the results of the (400) reflection for the determination of the dispersion. The pole figures found by Leber3 and by Rieck5 are largely different. The model given by Leber to explain the effects is in the authors' opinion in some respects unsatisfactory, especially if one looks at other than the (400) reflections. Intensities and dispersions of diffraction peaks are conclusive factors for the determination of the fine structure in wire textures. For this reason we studied them extensively to come to a model which is more suitable to fit the facts. In the following, after giving the experimental set-up, we report about measurements of X-ray diffraction on drawn tungsten wires. Different models to describe the experimental results will be discussed. EXPERIMENTAL GO-SiO2-A12O3 doped tungsten wires drawn to 0.18 mm in diam were used for the measurements. The wires were chemically etched to various diameters down to 0.03 mm. Measurements were carried out for the different wires in order to determine the dependence of the texture on the radius. The wires were cut to pieces of 10 mm length and fixed with paste closely against each other on a flat, polished glass plate. Parallelism of the wires with the surface of the glass plate should be adequate. For the diffraction studies three different X-ray sources were applied, respectively, giving the CuK,, FeK,, and FeKp emission. The measurements were carried out with a diffrac-tometer with a GM counter. The latter was fixed to a certain diffraction angle 20hkl and the diffraction intensity was recorded as a function of the angle of rotation of the specimen around the axis, lying in the specimen surface and perpendicular to the wire axis, as shown in Fig. 1. Measurements were also done with the detector at angles slightly deviating from the diffraction maxima The measured intensities in this case were taken to be equal to the background level. The deviations were chosen as small as possible but large enough to eliminate the influence of the diffraction maxima. The useful range of the rotation angle x of the specimen is generally limited by the wavelength of the X-rays. We have: where and cp is the angle between the wire axis and the normal of the diffraction plane. Intensity measurements were made to find the necessary corrections for counting loss of the GM counter and for distortion resulting from such effects as absorption of X-rays and from inclination of the reflection plane under study with respect to the surface of the specimen. At the present time most artillery cartridge cases are used only a single time. Since the process of reshaping a fired cartridge case so that it may be used again is much simpler and cheaper than the original manufacture of the case, it is clear that important savings could be effected if such re-formed cases were used in place of new cases. Extensive use of reconditioned cases has been hindered in the past, however, by the deterioration of the brass which may occur in the period of time between the first firing and the reconditioning of the cartridge cases. This deterioration sometimes results in a dangerously high incidence of firing splits in groups of reconditioned cartridge cases. It appears that the mechanism of the deterioration is the season cracking of the brass, for season cracks, of varying degrees of severity, may frequently be found in the cartridge cases after their return from the field. There are, of course, severe practical limitations to the extent to which fired cartridge cases can be protected from corrosion under battle conditions, particularly since the powder residue in the case is itself corrosive. The present paper describes a rapid method of testing the sidewalls of artillery cartridge cases for the presence of season cracks. This method has been developed specifically for use in connection with the reconditioning of fired cases, and makes it possible to carry out 100 per cent inspection. The amplitudes and frequencies of vibratiolls of a four-story stucco building were measured by specially developed electrocapacitive seismometers. Records were made on three floor levels with as many as 10 seismometers recording simultancously. Sources of vibration were: (1) an electric motor with unbalanced pulley, maximum speed 1800 r.p.m., maximum centrifugal force 90 lb., (2) truck traffic (both solid and pneumatic tires) moving over inequalities in the street in front of the house, (3) falling weights dropped on the street pavement from different heights, (4) miscellaneous sources, including a man jumping on the floor of the house and slamming doors. Tests were made to determine the natural frequencies of floor and wall panels by varying the speed of the unbalanced motor and by exciting the panels with a single impulse. The vibrations recorded were compared to records of vibrations from quarry blasts and it was observed that the vibrations from truck traffic were comparable to those recorded from quarry blasts and in no instance was there any damage to the building. As the tests were all of a negative character as far as damage was concerned, no index of destruction is formulated. Instead, the records are presented simply as vibration measurements obtained in an ordinary house under typical conditions.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) THE Fushun coal-field, now being opened up by the South Manchurian Railway Co., is connected with the main line by a branch, 30 miles long, from Sui Chia Tun, 10 miles south of Mukden, the capital of Manchuria. The coal-field, which lies on the southern bank of the Hun river, 25 miles east of Mukden, consists of a long narrow valley,. running east and west between hills composed of granitic and volcanic rocks. At the foot of the northern hills, the Hun river flows westward towards the Liao river, which drains the greater part of South Manchuria. At the foot of the southern hills, resting immediately upon volcanic rocks, and overlain by 20 ft. of alluvial, is a thick layer of Tertiary shales, carrying near the base two coal-seams. In many places the lower of these two seams is in immediate contact with volcanic lauds and basalts, the flows of which were evidently both prior and subsequent to the formation of the coal-seams. This contact has practically destroyed the lower seam for commercial purposes. The value of the field lies in the upper seam, which, for a length of nearly 8 miles, varies from 100 to 130 ft. thick. Of this seam, 85 per cent is good coal. The seam dips to the north conformably with the shales, at angles of from 25° to 30°, and appears to have an uninterrupted dip for about 1.5 miles before being possibly cut o$' by the northern hills. The coal-bearing shales extend east and west for a length of about 20 miles, but towards the east the continuity of the seams is broken by intrusive rocks. The coal is of the sub-bituminous variety, low in ash, bright in appearance, and breaks with a conchoidal fracture. A three-parameter mathematical model for one-dimensional flow in porous media is developed. The objective of the model is to predict accurately the longitudinal dispersion associated with the flow of either gases or liquids over a wide range of Reynolds number. A qualitative analysis of the model parameters is given. Published experimental pulse-response curves are compared with results predicted by the model. Several general types of problems are given for which the model can be used. INTRODUCTION The problem of multicomponent single-phase flow through porous media is encountered in the study of petroleum reservoirs, gas chromatographic and ion-exchange columns, industrial fixed-bed con-tacters and elsewhere. These particular examples span the wide range of flow conditions possible; Reynolds numbers of less than l0-4 are not unusual in oil-production problems, while values in excess of 103 are common in large fixed-bed operations. The study of flow-dependent transport phenomena is complicated both by the changes in the character of the flow over this range, and by the irregularity of the flow boundaries inherent to porous media. Dispersion is one of the important phenomena known to depend fundamentally on flow conditions as well as on fluid and medium properties. As used in this paper, the term "dispersion" refers to the observed mixing of fluid elements of different composition which occurs in flow systems. The actual mechanism may be one or more of a number listed below. Only dispersion in the direction of the mean flow (referred to as axial or longitudinal dispersion, or mixing) is considered here, although lateral dispersion arises as part of certain coupled mechanisms. MECHANISMS FOR LONGITUDINAL DISPERSION A number of distinct mechanisms are known3,5,7,8 to contribute to the phenomenon of longitudinal dispersion. The more important of these are as follows. 1. Molecular diffusion in the flow direction. 2. Turbulent (cell) mixing. 3. Lateral transport processes coupled with velocity and/or residence time distributions, including: (a) "Taylor" diffusion caused by the interaction of velocity profiles in individual voids with lateral molecular diffusion; (b) separation and remixing or interdiffusion of streams having different velocities around particles; and (c) the couplipg of gross velocity profiles, caused by viscous instability or inhomogeneous porosity, with lateral dispersion. 4. Finite mass-transfer rate between a porous matrix and the flowing phase, and finite diffusion rate inside elements of the porous matrix. It is a well documented fact that these mechanisms, whether acting individually or in combinations, produce essentially similar integral effects. The observed dispersion can be described approximately by solutions of the diffusion equation with a properly chosen dispersion coefficient. Necessary conditions for equivalence between dispersion and diffusion are discussed by Klinkenberg and Sjenitzer.7 Apparently these conditions are not satisfied exactly in many real systems. "Best fit" solutions of the diffusion equation often depart appreciably from measured breakthrough curves for the usual pulse- or step-forced experimental systems. In particular, pulse response curves usually show some degree of asymmetry and "tailing" which cannot be reproduced by the one-parameter diffusion model. The three-parameter model proposed herein attempts to produce these effects in a realistic manner. Asymmetry and tailing are predicted for certain sets of parameter values, while for other sets the new model agrees with the diffusion model. VELOCITY DEPENDENCE OF DISPERSION Molecular diffusion apparently controls at sufficiently low Reynolds number in both gas and liquid systems.*l3 At Re > 20, turbulent cell mixing is dominant for gases flowing at low pressure; the data of McHenry and Wilhelm8 show that the mixing cell is approximately 1 particle diameter long in random sphere packs. on the other hand, the data

Two processes have been developed for improving the quality of molten-aluminum alloys before casting. The Filtration Process. which involves passing molten metal through a packed bed of granular filter material, is a rapid means of removing finely divided particles. It has the most potential in those instances where removal of inclusions is of primary importance. The Combination Fillration-Inert Gas Fluxing Process inuolzles introduction of an inert gas so that it will diffuse countercurrent to metal flow through the filter bed of granular material. Dissolved hydrogen is removed from the metal in addition to removal of finely divided particles. The Combination Process is most useful where both inclusion removal and attainment of conistently low-hydrogen-content metal are important. Metal treated by the Combination Process is of higher and more uniform quality than heretofore attainable with prolonged chlorine fluxing. Costs of the Combination Process can, for the most part, be offset by savings derived from high recoveries and increased production of superior-quality products. IMPROVEMENT in the quality of molten-aluminum alloys is secured generally through the use of some fluxing practice in a crucible, holding furnace, or ladle involving either gaseous or solid fluxing media. Typical fluxing agents may include the gases nitrogen, argon, or chlorine used either singly or as mixtures and the solids aluminum chloride or hexachloroethane. Regardless of the fluxing means used, the primary objectives are the adequate removal of both metallic and nonmetallic inclusions and reduction of hydrogen content to an acceptably low level. The ultimate goal is to produce ingots and cast products of high quality free from inclusions and porosity. The development of ultrasonics for measurement of internal quality, tightening of quality controls, and the application of the aluminum alloys to new or different commercial fields have been responsible for an ever increasing demand for improvement of quality of both cast and fabricated products. This demand for high quality has not been restricted to any single type of product. On the contrary, the demand encompasses about the entire variety of products including those for fabrication, those to be machined, buffed, or finished for decorative purposes, and those for critical applications where both surface and internal quality is of utmost importance. In many instances products acceptable in the 40's would now be scrapped as unacceptable by these higher present-day standards. With this ever increasing demand for higher quality, it became apparent at Alcoa that conventional means of melt treatment were inadequate in many instances and new approaches were necessary. Consequently the research program was intensified with attention focused on metal treatment during transfer in order to reduce the furnace processing time to a minimum in an effort to attain the desired results at a minimum of additional expense. As a result of this intensive research program which covered numerous variations and adaptations of conventional methods in addition to new methods of melt treatment, several new processes were developed, two of which will be described here. The first of these, a method of melt filtration, was patented in February, 1959.l The second process involving combination filtration—inert gas fluxing was patented in June, 1962. 2 Other melt-treatment processes developed during this period of investigation were patented as listed.3 FILTRATION PROCESS General Description. (Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) THE term "pipe-vein" has recently been applied in this country to certain deposits of lead ore in magnesian limestone. The use of the term has been twofold. It has been revived as a term found in textbooks on mineral veins, with the implied or declared assertion that the ore-deposits thus named in this country are similar to those which have borne the title abroad. It has also been advanced as an appropriate name for a new class of deposits, even if such a class had not previously been recognized. In either case, the assumption is that pipe-veins form a group or class by themselves, and are not merely interior and subordinate features in larger deposits. The peculiar mining law of the United States, which regards " the vein," whatever that may be, as the basis of title, lends a special interest to these claims. But the object of this paper is rather to discuss the subject from the standpoint of geology and technical literature. I shall briefly answer two questions : (1) What are pipe-veins as described in technical literature? and (2) Is the name appropriate or necessary for a new class of deposits ? IN principle, production of salt from sea water is a simple operation. Sea water is trapped in ponds, the sun and wind cause evaporation of the water, and what is left is principally salt. Commercial production of solar salt, however, requires a careful consideration of many factors. Obviously, sufficient evaporation must take place throughout the making season to produce an economically adequate crop. Other factors are density of soil, contour of ground, height of ground above sea level, minimum dilution from fresh-water streams, and distance from market. Unfortunately, in the United States the localities of greatest evaporation, allowing for the other factors, are not the most suitable for the manufacture of sea salt by solar evaporation. The year 1939 in Kansas, with a production of 57,944,300 bbl. from 19,669 wells, shows a slight recession from the peak of oil production reached the previous year, when slightly over 59,000,000 bbl. of oil was marketed. The previous peak had been reached in 1917 with 45,451,000 bbl. marketed. Another still earlier peak had been reached in 1904, when slightly less than 5,000,000 bbl. was produced and sold. The production of gas probably reached a new peak during 1939 with a total of over 69 billion cubic feet. Between the peak of the year 1908, when over 80 billion cu. ft. was produced, and that of 1939 the production dropped to 16 billion cu. ft., in the year 1921. During the year 1458 wells were drilled. This figure is somewhat lower than that given in several trade journals, because it does not include wells that were deepened or recompleted in a different geological horizon. Nearly 75 per cent (1029) of the total number of wells were completed as commercial oil wells (824 in western and 205 in eastern Kansas). The commercial gas wells completed number 71, of which 24 are in eastern Kansas and 47 in western Kansas. The remaining completions include 154 dry holes in eastern and 204 dry holes in western Kansas. Based on daily potential capacity the new discoveries of the year accounted for a cumulative initial production of 264,000 bbl. in eastern and 1,158,827 bbl. in western Kansas. It is interesting in this connection to note that the number of wells completed in the state rose gradually to a first peak in 1904, when 2782 were drilled. The number dropped off rapidly to 368 three years later, but rose to the second and highest peak in 1918, when 4671 wells were completed. In the period between 1904 and 1912 more gas wells than oil wells were completed. Between the high peak of 1918 and the somewhat lower peak of 1937, the low point was reached during 1931 with the completion of only 470 wells. In the matter of new pools discovered, Kansas again ranks high. The exact number depends somewhat upon the interpretation of a "new" area—whether it should be called a new pool or a long extension of an older pool. The lure of possible new oil fields shut off development of the older Montana fields during the year 1928, cutting down the total production to less than the 1927 mark. However, with the production of oil worth approximately $7,000,000 during the past 12 months, Montana oil producers pushed their total up to $44,000,000 taken from two principal fields during the past 8 years. The highest prices in the United States for oil of similar gravity gave northern Montana producers a decided advantage and brought up the value of the oil to about the same value as the 1927 production, although the oil runs were 1,000,000 bbl. less. Production by Fields The discovery of two new oil fields in the Sweetgrass Arch, in north central Montana, in 1927, diverted attention from the Kevin-Sunburst field. Many operators turned their attention to wildcats and practically all of the drilling contractors were called into the new Pondera and Bannatyne fields. Although discovered in 1927, the Pondera field developed its first commercial production in March of 1928. Mild interest was followed four months later by a rush of operators, and by August practically every string of tools had been moved from the Kevin-Sunburst field to Pondera. The fall months found 40 wells drilling in this field and as the year closed there were 100 producers. Pondera field is remarkable in that every well thus far drilled within the structure proper has been a producer. Dry holes have been drilled around the field, but none within an area of four sections. Experts estimate that Pondera will produce 5000 bbl, of oil to the acre. The producing area now outlined by wells drilled is expected to produce around 15,000,000 bbl. of oil. Pondera crude brings $1.75. This field has one pipe line and a second line is being laid. Lack of a pipe line delayed development of the new Bannatyne field, south of Pondera, and also in the Sweetgrass Arch. Bannatyne has 11 producing wells scattered over an area of approximately three sections. Bannatyne is a sand field with a 70-ft. sand in the lower Jurassic, which core-drill tests show to be 60 per cent. saturated. With the completion

Various commercial pelroleum cokes were heat-1,reated at temperatures between 500° and 1500°C, in a nitrogen atmosphere, in laboratovy induction furnaces. The rate of tenlperature rise was varied betzveen 10" and 300°C per min, or the green cokes were flash-calcined, orv a combination of heating rates was used. Changes in the rate of heating had only negligible effects on the degree of' calcination as characterized by mean crystallite thickness and the chemical properties of the calcined coke. The physical structure of the cake was however significantly affected when rate of heating during calcination exceeded 50°C per min over the temperature range of 600° to 900°C. Surface-accessible porosily increased with the .rate of temperature rise, and this was accompanied by a change in pore size distribution. Source and properties of the green coke also had an influence on the structure of the calcined coke. The evidence presented suggests a similar mechanism of porosity development in petroleuiiz coke during calcination in industvial equiplnenl, such as rotary kilns. An increase in surface accessible povosity incveased the pitch binder requirement when the coke was used as aggregate in Soderberg paste. A correlation was established between calcined coke porosity and paste binder requiremenl. ManY results have been published on the changes of properties of petroleum coke during calcination, such as chemical composition, real density, electrical resistivity, crystallite and pore structure. The correlation of these properties with temperature of calcination and time at maximum temperature has been rather well established in both laboratory and pilot plant experiments. Surprisingly little attention has been given however to the effect of calcination conditions, such as rate of temperature rise or furnace atmosphere, on the chemical and structural properties of the calcined coke. It has been observed that petroleum coke, when calcined in industrial equipment, acquires higher porosity and lower real density than those attainable in laboratory furnaces at apparently identical calcina- tion temperature and soaking time. This paper describes a study of the effect of rate of heating during calcination on calcined coke properties using green petroleum cokes of different volatile matter, hydrogen, and sulfur content. An attempt was made to correlate the changes in coke structure with the flowability of anode paste of the type normally used in aluminum reduction cells. EXPERIMENTAL Petroleum Cokes Used. In the study of release of volatile matter and sulfur during calcination and the effect of rate of heating on calcined coke properties two delayed cokes of different sulfur contents were used. The results of analysis of the green cokes are given in Table I. In the study of the effect of flash calcination thirty-six commercial petroleum cokes from twelve different refineries were used with a range of properties shown in Table 11. Calcination Conditions. Calcination experiments were carried out in a laboratory induction furnace. In each run a 200-g sample of dry green coke sized to 10 by 65 Tyler mesh was calcined in a graphite crucible. The crucible containing the sample was placed in the middle of a stack of eight others filled with metallurgical coke to reduce temperature gradients within the sample. Temperature was measured by two Pt, Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples and controlled by a Celectray instrument. The two couples generally agreed within 5°C. In the study of volatile matter and sulfur release the samples were heated to temperatures in the range of 500" to 1500°C at a rate of 10°C per min in a nitrogen atmosphere and held at the final temperatures for 30 min. In the study of the effect of heating rate on calcined coke properties the desired rates between 10' and 300°C per min were obtained by manually adjusting the power input. Flash calcination was carried out by dropping 100 g of the green coke into the graphite dish preheated to the calcination temperature. Because of the small heat capacity of the furnace the coke was introduced in 20-g portions at a time. For this purpose a 2-in.-long nipple between two 1-in. gate valves installed on the top flange of the furnace served to provide a gas seal while feeding coke to the furnace. It was estimated that the temperature of the coke reached that of the furnace at a rate of approximately 1000°C per min. Holding time at final temperature was also 30 min. Calcined Coke Proper- Determined. Porosity was determined on 20 by 35 Tyler mesh samples using an Aminco-Winslow mercury pressure porosimeter with an operating range of 1.8 to 3000 psi absolute pressure (100 to 0.05 p pore diameter range).' Abstract-Statistical studies have been carried out on structural geological data collected across a large zone of roof failure 600 m (1968 ft) wide and at least 800 m (2642 ft) long in the Greta coal seam at Aberdare East Colliery. Two swarms of hundreds 2 of minor, normal faults with throws commonly between 3 and 300 mm in the room and pillar workings are broadly coincident with roof failure. The faults have been classified into dip slip and oblique and strike slip types. Roof conditions have been classified into good; troublesome with subclasses scaly, heavy, gutter falls and wide, flat-roofed falls; and severely failed with subclasses very heavy roof, gutter falls and dome falls. Troublesome conditions are defined as those in which the height of the fall is less than or equal to 0.3 m, and severely failed conditions as those in which the fall height is greater than 0.3 m. Comparison of faults, roof conditions and mining rate on a shift basis indicates that faults and roof failure are much more important than machine breakdowns in reducing mining rate. The effect of faults on roof conditions has been quantified using a concept called the "zone of influence, " a rectangular area around a fault in which the fault has potentially deleterious effects. The spatial comparison of fault "zones of influence" with areas of roof failure using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient shows that, while normal dip slip faults do not appear to be associated with roof failure, oblique slip and strike slip faults appear to be associated with roof classed as severely failed. The "zone of influence" of an oblique slip fault may extend up to 3 m on each side of it in the headings and up to 1.14 m in the cut-throughs. The fault "zone of influence" has geomechanical implications for the design of mine openings and possibly represents the maximum length of a cantilevered roof beam likely to fail during mining, owing to a fault. Roof conditions could possibly be predicted in blocks of virgin coal if the type of fault could be identified in oriented drill cores.

AS in former years, Pechelbronn, in Alsace, was the most important producer in 1936, with 484,453 bbl., of which 283,151 from drilling and 201,302 from mining showed a slight increase in comparison with the preceding year. Gabian, in France and Tliouanet, in Algeria, are nearly exhausted. At Gabian, four wells drilled in intermittent exploitation produced during the year 2893 bbl. Four wildcats, one of which is producing, constituted all the activity in research on French territory. In Morocco, some wildcats have been drilled in search for new fields and exploratory drilling has been done in Tselfat and in Djebel Bou Draa in known fields, but the results have been inconsiderable. In Tunisia there was a gas outburst in Kebir 1, which is the first practical result obtained. In Madagascar, the Andrafiavelo region has been left and a new region has been tried in Folakara with the Tsimororo. In French Equatorial Africa, one drilling is in progress.

ANDREW FLETCHER, newly elected Treasurer and Director, has spent his entire mining career in the employ of the St. Joseph Lead Co. and brings to the Institute Board a career rich in financial experience and varied in interest and accomplishment. "Drew" Fletcher was born in New York City on Feb. 6, 1895. After graduating from the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale in 1916 as a mechanical engineer, he became a shipyard mechanic in Wilmington, Del. The next thirteen years saw. him gradually enlarging his responsibilities until he ultimately became the head of the W. & A. Fletcher Co., in Hoboken, N. J., ship repairers. In 1929 his program for merging the Fletcher plant with five other New York shipyards was finally consummated in the formation of the United Dry Docks, Inc., which subsequently was purchased by Bethlehem Steel, with the result that today the old Fletcher yard and organization has been expanded into one of the finest ship repair units in the United States.
