This paper records the results of the earth resistivity surveys made in the Godavari River in connection with the Ramapadasagar project. After describing the topographical and geological features of the area, the results of the investigation at the several sites have been mentioned. Further, a detailed account has been given of the resistivity methods adopted, the apparatus used and the interpretation of the curves. The resistivity measurements carried out over the water course have been specially outlined, and a review of the verification of the electrical indications by drilling in a number of cases, has also been presented. Introduction The Government of Madras has under consideration the Ramapadasagar project which is estimated to cost some Rs.660,-000,000 (about two hundred million dollars). The most essential feature of this project is the construction of a high dam across the Godavari near Polavaram for impounding the waters of this great river of South India, whose maximum discharge is 2 million cu secs in flood time. It is estimated that when the proposed reservoir is constructed, about one million tons of rice could be produced annually under irrigation. To those who have had any acquaintance at all with the recent distressing famine conditions which India has passed through and is still undergoing, the Lounteous effects which this project will bring about to the country in the future, are obvious. In the region of the proposed reservoir, the river flows for several miles through a hilly tract, hemmed in between flanks of hard, solid rock; but the river bed is mostly sandy. A few bore holes put down in this sandy bed touched rock at a depth of 180 to 200 ft. The river bed is about jo ft above the mean sea level (m.s.l.) and the bedrock was found at —125 to —160 ft m.s.l. The crest of the dam is proposed at +162 ft m.s.l. The proposed dam mould therefore be about 120 to 130 ft above the river bed, and the foundations would have to reach down nearly zoo ft below the bed at the deepest part. A number of alternative sites were proposed for investigation, and it became necessary to quickly ascertain the bedrock topography at these sites. Dr. M. S. Krishnan,* who was consulted in the matter, furnished a detailed account of the geological features of the region and suggested a geophysical investigation which the writer carried out from February to April 1944, employing solely the electrical resistivity methods. The total length of the survey lines for the electrical measurements amounted to 62,600 ft and the number of resistivity determinations was about 2500. Six intermediate phases occur in the Nb-Zn sysThese phases form by peritectic reactions at 1120°, spectively. The Nb Zn 15 phase appears as the minor phase in the eutectic structure, and the terminal phases remain nearly pure niobium and zinc even at high temperature. Vapor -pressure measurements on the four high-temperature phases (Nb Zn to Nb Zn 3) permitted estimates of the composition limits of these phases and the calculation of approximate values of AFO, AH°, and AS°. 1 HE present study of the constitution of the binary Nb-Zn system was a part of an analysis of the mechanism by which coatings of the Nb-Zn intermediate phases protect niobium against oxidation at high temperature.' Since the primary interest in these phases was in coating service, attention in this study was given principally to the four phases stable at high temperature with only cursory attention to the two low-temperature phases. The solubility studies of niobium in zinc by Martin, Knighton, and Feder2 and the reports from the present study of the Nb-Zn coating represent the only published data pertaining to this system. Previously Hodge, Evans, and Hoskins, in an experimental survey, had noted that niobium was not resistant to attack by molten zinc, but no further observations were reported. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES a) General. The nature of the binary Nb-Zn system precluded the use of more conventional methods of determining the phase equilibria such as thermal analyses of a series of cast alloys. An extrapolation of the liquidus data of Martin, Knighton, and Feder2 to higher temperatures suggested that the solubility of niobium in zinc would remain low in the entire temperature range of interest. The preliminary results of the present studies showed that all of the high-temperature intermediate phases form by peritectic reactions. Thus the sluggish nature of this type of reaction and the steepness of the liquidus indicated that thermal analyses would not yield reliable data. The peritectic reactions, of course, precluded the direct formation of samples of the individual phases from the melt. b) Materials. The niobium and zinc used in the present studies were of high purity. The niobium, in the form of 0.1-in.-diameter rods, contained 30 ppm 0, 30 ppm N, and 15 ppm C. Considering the great advance in the development and application of electricity, it is not strange that eventually a big field for its use has been found in oil-field operations. So far as is known, the first electric drive in oil-field operations was in the Russian field of Baku in 1900. The first application in this country was made by the South Penn Oil Co. near Folsom, West Va. in 1903. In 1916, electric power was first used in the Burma fields of India for drilling and pumping. Between 1916 and 1922, The Empire Gas & Fuel Co. made the first large electrical installation in the Mid-Continent fields. But although the first application was made 27 years ago, it is only within the last 10 years that oil companies have begun to look upon its use with much favor. Within the last few years, there has been a steady increase in the use of electricity in the oil fields. The first application of electricity for oil-field operations in Wyoming was in the Lander field in 1919; the second was in 1924 in Salt Creek; and the third, and last to date, was made by the Continental Oil Co. in the Big Muddy field during 1926. Lander Field The electrification of oil-field operations in Wyoming was initiated by J. W. Steele, superintendent of the Producers & Refiners Oil Corpn., in the Lander field in 1919. At that time, 32 wells were being pumped from five band-wheel powers, with oil engines as the prime movers. Eight barrels of fuel oil were used for power per day and at the price of 90 c. per bbl. the fuel bill was $36 per day. It was decided to try a 15 to 35-hp. oil-field motor on one of these powers. Electric power was generated with steam at the old Wind River refinery station. This test was so successful that in 1920 all five powers were equipped with 15 to 35-hp. oil-field motors, the power being obtained from the Sinks Canyon hydroelectric station. Four of these powers pumped wells at an average depth of 1450 ft., and the fifth pumped wells at an average of 2100 ft. In 1920, the average production per day from the 32 wells was 325 bbl. IN developing a consistent picture of the thermal expansion of the commercial chromium steels, which cover a range of, carbon contents, it is desirable to know the expansion in the limiting case of the binary, carbon-free, iron-chromium alloys. We have, therefore, determined the thermal expansion of a series of five special alloys, ranging in chromium content from 3 to 10.5 per cent, with not more than 0.03 per cent carbon, over a temperature range extending beyond the transformation region; this low carbon content enables us to draw reasonably reliable conclusions as to the behavior of the carbon-free system. Moreover, the measurements serve to determine the beginning and the end of the alpha-gamma transformation; and they emphasize once more the fact that a transformation temperature determined by any method in which the specimen is .cooled at an appreciable rate is apt to be seriously in error, particularly if the metal contains a transformation-retarding element such as chromium or managanese. The lag, or undercooling, observed at the ?-a transformation is explained in terms of the influence of temperature on transformation velocity; the rather unusual shape of the ? loop is attributed to a change with temperature and with composition of the distribution of chromium between the alpha-iron and gamma-iron solid solutions. The exact composition of the alloys which were obtained through the courtesy of Dr. W. Rohn, of the Heraeus Vakuumschmelze A-G., is given in Table 1. Determinations of the linear thermal expansion and of transformation temperature were carried out in the vacuum dilatometer previously described,1 using a rate of heating and of cooling of 3.0° to 3.5° per minute unless otherwise stated. Magnetic susceptibility, which was measured in studying the rate of transformation, was determined with a magnetic balance, which also has. been described.2

Tunneling in coal mines includes driving the main haulageways or roadways which serve as the development entries. Although constituting the lifelines of these mines, little attention has been paid to development entries in the United States in terms of systematic pre-construction planning and design. Coal mine tunnels, as the terminology is used in Europe and elsewhere, are understood in the United States to be the main development entries, either in room-and-pillar mining or in longwall mining. These development entries are not tunnels in the traditional sense since they usually are of a multi-entry type involving entries and cross-cuts, and their intersections. Thus, the design of coal mine tunnels is intertwined with the design of coal pillars. This paper summarizes the results of a three-year research project aimed at improving the design of development entries in U.S. coal mining. A design approach has been developed for this purpose and design procedures for roof support in main entries and for pillar sizing are proposed.

A modified Peierls model is Presented for the rationalization of the asymmetric plastic behavior of single crystals of bcc metals. The model assumes that the asymmetry of slip arises from a tendency toward asymnetric splitting of the a/2[111] screw dislocation. The approach differs from former theories however insofar as it assumes that the splitting is so minor ttut only the core energy is modified and that no real partial dislocations exist. As a consequence, the concepts of a line energy of a partial dislocation, interaction between partial dislocations, constriction energies, and stacking fault energies are not invoked. Instead the present analysis is based on a specialization of the Peierls mechanism which assumes an asymmetric dislocation core which is modified by the effective stress and permits cross slip. The theoretical predictions on the stress-temperature -strain rate and orientation relationship agree qualitatively with the limited experimental data that are currently available. Additional experimental work over wider ranges of conditions is suggested to provide more complete evaluation of the possible validity of this theory. RECENT experimental investigations on the low-temperature thermally activated deformation of bcc metals have confirmed the existence of several unique orientation effects. These will be described with the aid of the standard stereographic projection shown in Fig. 1. If slip were determined exclusively by crystal symmetry, the deformation characteristics would be symmetrical about X; = 0 and independent of whether the specimen were subjected to a tension or a compression stress, regardless of what combinations of slip planes might be operative. Experiments, however, reveal that neither of these symmetry based predictions are valid. A schematic representation of the commonly observed asymmetry of both the yield stress and the plane of slip is shown in Fig. 2. A reversal of the direction of stressing results in an inversion of the asvmmetric behavior. 1) Asymmetry bf Yielding. A detailed investigation on the asymmetric yielding in an Fe-2.7 pct Si alloy was repoEted by Tabka, Tikeuchi, and Furubayashi,1 Similar trends have been observed by Keh and Nakada on iron,' Stein on molybdenum,3 Bowen, Christian, and Taylor4 on columbium, Sherwood, Guiu, Kim, and pratt5 on Ta, Cb, and Mo. The degree of asymmetry not only depends on the atomic number and alloying but, in all cases that have been examined, it also increases with a decrease in the test temperature. 2) Asymmetry of the Slip Plane. Asymmetric $I-~: curves of the type shown in Fig. 2 have been found for several Fe-Si alloys6-8,1 and columbium.4 There is general agre_ement that near X: = 30 deg slip occurs by the [111](211) mode so that ?1 = 30 deg. As X; decreases it appears that [111](211) to [111](101) cross slip takes place leading to slip band traces on intermediate planes. And as xi approaches 0 deg, sharp

Chemical upgrading testwork on Stillwater chomite concentrate shows that reduction roasting and leaching (sulfuric acid and/or ferric sulfate) can provide upgraded feed to ferrochromium furnaces for making upgraded ferrochromium. Two-stage reduction smelting in electric arc furnaces can make upgraded ferrochromium also. Sulfating roasts and leaching (acid and/or water) results using gaseous SO2—SO3 or solid ammonium sulfate were not satisfactory for upgrading chromite. Chemical upgrading of domestic Stillwater (Montana) chromite has been considered at various times1'2' to provide a material with higher chromium to iron ratio, more like foreign high grade ore, for the production of standard grade ferrochromium. Physical bene-ficiation of Stillwater chromite ore can provide a ratio, Cr/Fe, no higher than the ratio in the chromite mineral, which is approximately 1.7. For comparison the analyses of a foreign metallurgical grade chromite ore, a high grade electrostatic process Stillwater concentrate and a stockpile concentrate from the Stillwater ore are noted in Table I. Single stage smelting of the high grade foreign ore with a ratio, Cr/Fe, of 3.37 can provide a ferrochromium of over 65 pct chromium content. Similar smelting of the Stillwater concentrate with a ratio of 1.7 can provide a ferrochromium of 50 to 55 pct chromium content.' It has been demonstrated on a pilot plant scale that chemically upgraded Stillwater chromite having a ratio, Cr/Fe, of 3.0 also can be smelted to provide a ferrochromium containing over 65 pct chromium.5 Two major considerations for an upgrading process are the ratio, Cr/Fe, in the product and the chromium recovery. A minimum ratio, Cr/Fe, of 3.0 is required in the product but for economic reasons a higher ratio is desirable for blending purposes as long as the recovery is satisfactory. Data from different kinds of chemical upgrading testwork are presented in this report. Some of the testwork was conducted to make a product which was not intended to be feed for ferrochrome smelting, but the data are considered pertinent to chemical upgrading. Results reported by others are noted also for comparison. WORK REPORTED BY OTHERS The U. S. Bureau of Mines has contributed much to the literature on chemical upgrading of chromite and a summary is given in Table 11. Reduction roasting and acid leaching were reported by Boericke and Bangert,1 by Lloyd and Gorst, et a1,2 and by Boericke3 to demonstrate very good success on a laboratory scale and only fair success in pilot plant tests for Stillwater (Benbow) concentrates. This work included basic studies on thermodynamic properties to explain the reduction and leaching results. Canadian workers, Downes and Morgan,9 have reported experimental success in upgrading a low grade Bird River chromite, similar to Stillwater material by the same process. Russian workers1' have noted results on reduction tests of high grade chromite which may apply to low grade ores and which help in understanding the reduction process. The use of flux additives in the reduction process was an innovation of their work. The Canadian workers9 also reported other kinds of experiments, including autoclave leaching of the chromite in a limited amount of sulfuric acid. An insoluble basic chromium sulfate was formed and separated from soluble iron, magnesium, and aluminum sulfates to provide an upgraded material. U.S. Bureau of Mines workers, Lloyd, Rosenbzum, Home and Davis,' reported on autoclave leaching of Benbow concentrates as a means of obtaining chromium alum for electrolysis. This last work required selective crystallization of alum to separate iron from chromium. Chloridizing roasting of Benbow and Mouat concentrates has been reported by Hunter and Banning6 and others8 to show that the iron chloride could be volatilized from the chromite to provide upgraded residues.

The ores received at the Washoe Smelter come almost entirely from the mines in Butte and contain the following minerals : Chalcocite, Cu2S; covellite, CuS; chalcopyrite, CuFeS2, (trace); bornite, Cu3FeS3; enargite, Cu3AsS4; malachite, Cu2CO4 + H2O (trace); pyrite, FeS2; sphalerite, ZnS; rhodo-chrosite, MnCO3, (less than 1 per cent.); rhodonite, MnSiO3, (less than I per cent.). The country-rock of Butte is of the granite family and is a quartz-monzonite containing a little less silica than typical granite. Miike Colliery of Mitsui Coal Mining Company, the biggest and oldest coal mine in Japan, is producing a quarter of the national coal production, about 5.2 million tons of clean coal annually and almost a half of which is now being mined under the "slicing Mining System". The slicing system is a mining method to mine a thick coal seam dividing it into two faces, upper and lower. Its history started nearly 20 years ago. However, the all-around modernization of this system has made little progress up to recent years, while mining methods for single longwall faces has made a remarkable progress together with the improvements in mining machineries, self advancing supports and so on. The reason was that the tremendous difference in adaptabilities of mechanized face equipments existing between the upper and lower faces has made it very difficult to increase the total production capacity of slicing system. After our persistent study for seventeen years, we have recently realized successfully the quite satisfactory slicing system, applying the combination of shield type self advancing supports and double ranging drum cutter at both faces. We are now fully convinced of that the high efficient, quite safe and improved slicing system has been basically established for the present. This paper intends to brief the transition on the combination of self advancing supports and mining machines, its results and further to detail the development of shield type self advancing support for upper face and artificial roof material which shall be the key point to be successful in full mechanization of slicing faces.

calculation has been made of the standard deviations to be expected in the measurement of volume fractions by areal analysis, lineal analysis and four point-counting Procedures. The effect of experimetztal errors is not included. Our conclusion is that a point count using a two-dimensional grid will be the most efficient method of volume fraction analvsis providing the grid spacing IS coarse enough. The predicted standard deviation for such an analysis is shown to he in good agreement with that determined experimentally. A metallurgist wishing to estimate a structural property by means of quantitative metallography is often faced with a choice between several different procedures. In such a case, he will naturally wish to know: a) Which procedure is the most efficient in the sense of requiring the least effort for a given precision? b) For a given procedure, what are the conditions for maximum efficiency? c) Under these conditions, how many measurements are required to attain a given precision? It is our aim in this paper to provide at least partial answers to these queries as they relate to the estimation of volume fractions from measurements on a random two-dimensional section of an opaque specimen. The commonly used techniques1,2 for volume-fraction analyses are based on one or more of the following principles: i) For an areal or Delesse3 analysis: That the areal fraction of a three-dimensional feature intercepted by a random plane provides an unbiased estimate of the volume fraction of that feature. ii) For a lineal or Rosiwal4 analysis: That the fractional intercept on a line passing at random through a two-or three-dimensional feature provides an unbiased estimate of, respectively, the areal or volume fraction of that feature. iii) For a point-count analysis: That the fractional number of randomly or regularly dispersed points falling within the boundaries of a two-dimensional feature on a plane, or within the boundaries of a three-dimensional feature in a volume, provides an unbiased estimate of, respectively, the areal or volume fraction of that feature. The absence of bias referred to in these principles does not, of course, imply that the results of an analysis will be free of error, but only that the expected result is equal to the true one. Application of the foregoing principles provide the following six possible experimental procedures: a) An Areal Analysis—This involves the measurement with a planimeter (or other means) of the area of a constitutent intercepted by the plane of polish b) A Two-Dimensional Random Point Count—Apos-sible experimental procedure for this analysis is to superimpose a sheet of transparent graph paper on a micrograph, and then use a table of random numbers to select coordinates for the points. c) A Two-Dimensiotuzl Systematic Point Count-Similar to b) except that the points are distributed in a prescribed manner, usually at the corners of a lattice superimposed on a micrograph or the screen of a projection microscope. d)A Lineal Analysis—A measurement of the fractional line length intercepted. It is usually performed by traversing the specimen under the cross hairs of a microscope and recording the distance travelled in each constituent. e) 4 One-Dimensional Random-Point Count— This could be performed by traversing the specimen with stops at random intervals to identify the constituent then present under the cross hairs. f) A One-Dimensionul Systematic Point Count— Similar to e) except that the traverse is stopped at prescribed (usually equal) intervals. It will be noted that the point-counting procedures b) and c) can be regarded as methods of estimating the areal fraction. Similarly, e) and f) are indirect methods of making a lineal analysis. All of the six procedures described above involve at least one stage of sampling. Thus, quite apart from any experimental errors, there will always be a statistical uncertainty associated with the final results. It is with the calculation of this uncertainty that we will be concerned. To avoid unnecessary repetition, the statistical relationships that will be used in the calculations are collected together in the appendix. For a fuller discussion reference should be made to one of the many textbooks5,6 on statistics. For symbols relating to the specimen structure we will follow as far as possible the terminology used by Smith and Guttman.7

Recrystallization and grain growth in thoria dispersed nickel and nichrome were recently studied by Webster as a function of temperature and deformation. The unexpected part of these results was that specimens which had received heavier deformation developed greater resistance to recrystallization. Retardation of recrystallization was accompanied by the formation of voids around thoria dispersion. To explain these results, Webster suggested that the formation of void around the particles increased the effective size of thoria particles. This resulted in greater impediment to the grain-boundary migration and as a consequence the recrystallization of the matrix is retarded. In the present note an alternative and more probable explanation for the effect of voids on recrystallization is presented. The exact mechanism of void formation in thoria dispersed nickel or nichrome is not known. However, it is reasonably certain that it must be preceded by the stress concentration in the matrix around thoria dispersion during the deformation.'' The resulting stress concentration must be sufficient enough to supply the surface energy for the new surfaces created. Further, the decrease in the strain energy of the matrix surrounding the potential void nucleus must be larger than the surface energy of the newly created surface. The release of strain energy due to formation of crack results in a strain free cylinder of the material around the voids.13 If the void formation is not localized, at few points only (as is the case here), this process may lead to considerable amount of release of strain energy of the matrix. The pattern of recrystallization behavior of single phase homogeneous matrix as well as the matrix having a second phase dispersion is same except for the fact recovery and recrystallization are more clearly delineated.14 In general, the recrystallization temperature is lowered (i.e., recrystallization is easier) with increase in the amount of cold work. This is due to the increase in stored energy in the matrix with increasing amount of deformation. If somehow there is a relaxation of strain energy in the matrix, the recrystallization should become difficult because of the decrease in the amount of stored energy available for recrystallization. Since the formation of voids leads to a decrease in the strain energy of matrix, the recrystallization of the matrix would be inhibited due to the formation of voids during deformation prior to recrystallization. It has been observed by earlier workers15'16 that the presence of preexisting voids in a matrix retards the recrystallization. The essential issue here is how do the voids act to produce this effect. If the voids influence recrystallization only by blocking the grain boundary migration, then the effect should be maximum when they are present almost exclusively along grain boundary. These conditions are obtained during high temperature deformation. However, the voids produced due to creep along grain boundary are not able to prevent recrystallization17 suggesting that they are not effective in blocking grain boundary movement. Recently it was shown by Davies and Williams that the voids can act as sinks for vacancies." As a result the processes dependent on vacancy diffusion like recovery, recrystallization, dislocation climb, and so forth, will be hindered. This fact may be responsible for inhibition of recrystallization during subsequent deformation and annealing cycles. It is to be noted here that there is a large difference between the density of voids in creep experiments and the other experiments where retarding effect of voids on recrystallization is seen. The voids in former may number up to l04 to l05 per sq cm whereas in latter cases the voids density is typically around 1010 to 1013 per sq cm. It appears that the decrease in supply of vacancies in creep is insufficient to adversely affect the recrystallization due to low void population. The author is grateful to P. Das Gupta and S. P. Ray for helpful discussions. Author's Reply D. Webster Tiwari appears to have misunderstood the nature of grain boundary-particle interactions. Tiwari (quoting Cahn) states that second phase particles become more effective as they become smaller, therefore as the voids in TDNiC make the thoria particles effectively bigger their ability to resist grain boundary movement is impaired. This particle size argument was originally proposed in the form of an equation by Zener 20 years agol9 and is not necessarily valid as is discussed below. However, assuming it is valid, it predicts a greater boundary restraining effect by smaller particles simply because their combined cross sectional area is greater at a constant volume. If the number of particles remains the same and their effective size increases, as in the present case, Zener's equation predicts a greatly reduced grain size. This is because the effect

SINCE the discussion on steel rails in America has forcibly drawn attention to the value of chemical analysis, if not as a necessary stipulation, at least as a guide to control the usual mechanical tests, some doubt has been thrown upon the accuracy of the analytical results obtained by different chemists. To any one having the least acquaintance with chemistry, it is quite clear that if exactly similar results are to be obtained from the same borings of steel, exactly the same methods must be used by the different analysts. Hence the necessity (if complications are to be avoided) of establishing what I may call standard or normal methods, to be used both by the inspectors and by the chemists at the works. Remembering that the application of chemistry to steelrail inspection is yet in its infancy, it is of great importance to possess a perfect acquaintance with the best methods in use. Being myself a grateful pupil of Professor Eggertz, of the School of Mines in Sweden, it occurred to me, two years ago, that I could not do better than start a laboratory of my own, and engage one of his pupils, Mr. Troilius, for the purpose of analyzing the steel borings from mechanically-tested rails, so that I might thus obtain without delay thoroughly accurate determinations. Moreover, in order to carry on the operations in perfect accordance with the methods used at the steel works in England and Germany, where I had to control the manufacture, I deemed it desirable to allow Mr. Troilius to go through a course of training at these works; and I gladly seize this opportunity of expressing my grateful acknowledgments to several works in England and in Germany for affording every facility for such an exchange of information as mas found necessary in arriving at the best analytical methods to be used.

A serious disagreement as to the effect of titanium on the hardenability of steel exists in published references to this subject. Kramer, Hafner and Toleman reported1 that acid-soluble titanium decreased the hardenability, with multiplying factors less than unity according to Grossmann's system for calculating hardenability from the composition. Crafts and Lamont, on the other hand, showed2 how titanium increased the hardenability, with multiplying fdctors up to nearly I.; for about 0.1 per cent titanium, though reducing the hardenability with higher titanium. Their data, however, were obtained almost exclusively from steels containing more than 1.4 per cent manganese, and thus should be considered as applying mainly to manganese steels. Likewise, the results of Kramer, Hafner and Toleman regarding titanium are subject to the limitation that although they eliminated the effect of the insoluble titanium compounds from their calculations, they did not make a similar correc- tion for the carbon that was combined with titanium and therefore occurred in a similarly ineffective form. It is suggested by the literature referred to that titanium may have different effects on hardenability, depending on the mode of its occurrence in the steel. The different effects on strength, ductility, etc., have already been discussed by the author.3 In the present discussion some comparisons, on the basis of hardenability as revealed by the Jominy end-quench test, are given between three titanium and two non-titanium steels heat-treated in the same ways, and between other titanium steels heat-treated in several different ways. IN April, 1873, No. 2 furnace at the Glendon Iron Works being out of blast, it was decided to alter it from an open to a closed top. The three side flues, through which a part of the gas was formerly taken off, were 15 feet below the top, and as, for various reasons, it was not convenient to cut new flues through the brickwork at the top, as is commonly done with closed-top furnaces, a modification of Coingt's charger was employed. This apparatus, as figured by De Vathaire,* consists of a cup or hopper, like that used with the cup and cone, and a central pipe for taking off the gas, which descends some distance into the furnace, and has a projection around it forming a seat for a ring of a triangular cross-section, which closes the opening between the cup and the central gas-pipe. The charge is put into the cup, and by lowering the ring, is thrown into the furnace, a part going outside of the ring toward the walls, and a part through the inside toward the gas-pipe. In this form the apparatus was not applicable, for: 1st. With a gas-pipe three feet in diameter, in a top eight feet in diameter, the openings left by lowering the ring would not be large enough to let lump coal pass through. 2d. For the charger to shut tight, the ring must bear equally against the projection made for it on the gas-pipe, and against the edge of the cup. This would not be difficult to effect when the apparatus is first put up, but a comparatively small change in the relative position of the parts, such as is almost certain to occur from expansion, would cause the ring to touch the pipe or the cup, whichever happened to be the lower, first, and leave a leak between it (the ring) and the other. In the plan adopted (Fig's. 5 and 6, Plate I), the central opening in the ring is closed by the bottom of the gas-pipe, whereby more room is left for the passage of the stock when the charger is open, than if the pipe descended into the furnace; and the pipe, instead of being rigidly supported, rests on the ring, when the charger is closed, and follows it for two or three inches as it opens, until stopped by the counter-balance lever C. When the ring is raised to close the furnace top, it comes in contact first with the bottom edge of the gas-pipe, then both are raised to¬gether, until stopped by the ring touching the edge of the cup. The preferred crystallographic orientations (texture) developed in randomly oriented, poly crystalline niobium during rolling were studied by means of X-ray diflraction techniques. The evolution of texture at both the surface and center regions of the rolled strip was carefully examined as a function of increasing defamation throughout the range 43 to 99.5 pct reduction in thickness. Certain aspects of the center texture development in niobium are in agreement with the predictions of a theory by Dillamore and Roberts, but others cannot be explained by the theory in its present form. Above 87 pct reduction by rolling, a distinctly different texture appeared in the surface layers which was unlike the center texture. The present results are compared with previous results obtained from other bcc metals and alloys. RANDOMLY oriented, poly crystalline metal aggregates when plastically deformed to a sufficiently large extent develop preferred orientations or textures. In a recent review article, Dillamore and Roberts1 pointed out that the nature of the developed texture may be influenced by a large number of variables. These include both material variables such as crystal structure and composition and treatment variables such as stress system, amount of deformation, deformation temperature, strain rate, prior thermal-mechanical history, and so forth. From a practical point of view, the control of preferred orientation may often be important for the successful fabrication of metals into usable components. During the past few decades many experiments have been devoted to the study of deformation textures. This work, however, has been confined in large part to metals and alloys that have an fcc crystal lattice. By comparison, bcc metals and alloys have received much less attention, and consequently our understanding of preferred orientations in these materials is only shallow. This state of affairs worsens when it is realized that almost all of our present howledge about this class of materials derives from studies on irons and steels.' The bcc refractory metals, which are relative newcomers to the industrial world, have, on the other hand, been given at best only passing glances in the area of texture development. Our understanding of the evolution of preferred orientations in bcc metals can only remain fairly limited until systematic studies of metals and alloys other than the irons and steels have been carried out and the influence of the many variables has been determined. To that end a program was initiated to investigate in detail texture development in niobium. The present paper reports some of the results of this study. Textures were determined at both the center and surface of strips rolled variously to as much as 99.5 pct reduction in thickness at subzero temperatures. Emphasis in this paper is on texture description and on texture evolution during rolling to progressively heavier deformation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The niobium was purchased from the Wah Chang Corp. as a 3-in.-diam electron-beam-melted billet. Chemical analysis indicated the impurities to be less than 300 ppm Ta, 40 ppm C, 10 ppm H, 170 ppm 0, and 110 ppm N. All other impurities were below the limits of detection by spectrochemical analysis. This large-grained billet was fabricated into specimen stock so that a fine-grained randomly oriented grain structure resulted. This was accomplished in three deformation steps alternated with recrystalli-zation anneals of 1 hr at 1200°C in a vacuum of low 10"6 Torr range after each deformation step. The first step was to alternately compress the billet 10 to 20 pct in each of three orthogonal directions. The second step was to compress in only two directions 90 deg apart to produce a 2-in.-sq bar. The final step was to roll this bar 50 pct to give a 1-in. by 2-in. cross section. After the final anneal, metallo-graphic examination showed the material to have an average grain size equivalent to ASTM No. 5 at 100 times (i.e., 0.065 in. diam). Specimens cut from the center and edges of this bar gave no indication of detectable preferred orientation when examined by X-ray diffraction. Samples 1.5 in. long, either 0.625 or 0.750 in. wide, and approximately 0.400 in. thick were machined from this fabricated ingot. The surfaces corresponding to the rolling planes were ground so as to be parallel. The samples were chemically polished in a solution of 60 pct nitric acid and 40 pct hydrofluoric acid (48 pct solution) prior to rolling to remove any cold work introduced in the machining operations. Rolling was accomplished with a 2-high hand-operated laboratory rolling mill that had 2.72-in.-diam rolls. Prior to operation, the rolls were polished with 600 grit paper, cleaned with acetone, and then soaked in a container of liquid nitrogen for several hours. The samples were also soaked in liquid nitrogen prior to rolling and were recooled between each pass. While some slight heating of the samples occurred during rolling, this procedure maintained the sample temperature well below 0°C at all times. The samples were rolled unidirectionally, and the rolling plane surfaces were not inverted during any phase of the operation. The draft per pass averaged between 0.010 to 0.012 in. After 96 or 97 pct reduction the draft was reduced to 0.001 to 0.002 in. per pass. Samples were rolled to various reductions in thickness between 43 and 99.5 pct.

During the last half century a great amount of ingenuity and energy has been devoted to the invention of appliances for the recovery of valuable minerals from very fine sands and slimes. The reason for this is that in almost every dressing plant the greatest losses of values, considered relatively as well as absolutely, occur in the treatment of slimes. The natural aim of mill operators to minimize these losses has in recent years received another impetus, from the fact that the gradually diminishing occurrence of high-grade ores makes a more intense recovery of values from existing resources absolutely necessary for profitable operation. The results of such attempts are found in the appearance of a great number of machines and appliances which make it profitable to-day to rework old clumps, containing the tailings of older processes. A constantly growing difficulty of obtaining skilled labor and the increase in wages made it prohibitory to employ those types of machines which required much attention, and in the middle of the ninieteenth century the various concentrating tables of the percussion type, which automatically discharge their products, began to take the place of the intermittent tables, on which, when the bed had reached a certain thickness, operation had to be stopped in order to allow the skimming by hand of the separate layers formed on the table. In the course of years, two general types of machines evolved for the treatment of fine sands arid slimes: The so-called concentrators and vanners, on the one hand, and the buddles and round tables on the other.' For the profitable treatment of the very finest slimes, round tables have as a last resort proved more satisfactory and econoillical than other machines. FOR discharging and diffusing the gases from the reverberatory furnaces and converters the Morenci Reduction Works has been provided with one of the largest reinforced concrete chimneys ever built. It is 612 ft. high from the bottom of the foundation to the cap at the top, and has a minimum diameter of 24 ft. inside the lining near the top and 38 ft. 10 in. at the bottom. Its estimated capacity, at the elevation of 4338 ft. above sea level, is about 1,000,000 cu.ft. of gas per minute at a temperature of 500° F. and an atmospheric temperature of 90°. Under these conditions the draft will be at least 3 in. of water at the flue inlet. The gases enter the chimney through a steel balloon flue 33 ft. high and 15 ft. wide, the bottom of which is 19 ft. above the ground.
