The storage of energy in one form or another is a well established practice, demonstrated by the familiar sight of large oil storage steel tanks. Today, however, the problems of energy storage are taking on a new complexion. Increased emphasis on large and sometimes untried forms of energy storage is being generated by: (1) The uncertainties we face concerning future oil and gas supplies. (2) The growing need for the storage of peak-shaving energy on large utility systems. (3) The growing volume of highly toxic and energy generating wastes resulting from nuclear power plants. Concurrent with the growth of these pressures, legitimate environmental concerns now demand that the methods of storage which are utilized meet adequate criteria of safety and preservation of surface land, as well as fulfilling technical and economic functions. From these elements, increasing awareness has grown of the potential role that can be played by underground space in providing a storage medium for energy related materials. The vessels which must be built for underground energy storage will be built by the tunnel engineer, and the design requirements of such vessels will go far beyond the classical tunneling requirement to drive a stable, reasonably dry tunnel between two points. Depending on the nature of the material to be stored, the manner in which the storage is to be operated, and the specific risks to the environment which are involved, rock chambers must be designed as special purpose storage vessels. The tunnel engineer may be required to demonstrate that unusual pressure and temperature conditions can be sustained by the rock, or that containment of a toxic material can be assured. In order to monitor/control airflow rate distribution in a complicated ventilation network installed many regulators, an integrated system composed of expert system, exerting programs for simulation to get macroscopic characteristics and drawing diagram, monitoring system and so on is introduced in this study. This system is made up of airflow velocity sensors and computers linked to an local area network. The main results of this study are as follows; 1) Combinations of two branches to monitor aerodynamic resistance change in a branch p in a network can be selected by comparing factor's value in a branch relation table. 2) When the combination of sensor branches for a branch p does not exist in the network at present condition, the system changes aero- dynamic resistances of appropriate branch q placed a regulator by referring branch relation table. And then the system asks other computer to get macroscopic characteristics under altered value of aerodynamic resistance of the branch q. 3) Dot pattern diagram shows airflow rate relation between an active branch and a passive branch. Three relations such as a) a straight line, b) a monotonous curve and c) extremums are displayed in different patterns for all the sets between an active branch and a passive branch at a time. 4) The ranges of airflow rate in coal faces by changing aerodynamic resistance of any one branch placed a regulator are shown in the Pareto diagram using values in the branch relation table. 5) Ventilation transfer diagram with two parameter, one shows airflow rate in a coal face and the other shows energy provided by main fans to overcome aerodynamic resistance in a net- work, is utilized to decide countermeasures for decreasing energy consumption in the network on increasing of airflow rate in the specified branch.

This study simulates the impact of a shale gas well casing breach near a longwall mine. Field studies are conducted to measure mining-induced permeability changes over the abutment pillar of a longwall mine, and a geomechanical model is developed in 3DEC, a three-dimensional numerical modeling code, to predict the aperture of fractures in the overburden at the study site. The predicted aperture values are used to determine mining-induced permeabilities, and the results are compared with the field measurements. These aperture values are provided as inputs into fracture flow code (FFC), which generates a stochastic discrete fracture network (DFN) model for the study site and predicts the potential shale gas flow to the mine. Results from 100 DFN realizations are statistically analyzed using the bootstrapping method to compensate for notable variation in fracture geometry. The results show a significant difference between the gas inflow for nearby panels due to increase in the induced permeability during mining of the second panel. The average gas flow to the mine was calculated as 4.72 × 10 m3/s (49 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Sewickley horizon during the first panel mining, 8.97 × 10 m3/s (19 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Uniontown horizon during the first panel mining, 2.16 × 10 m3/s (458 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Sewickley horizon during the second panel mining, and 8.07 × 10 m3/s (171 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Uniontown horizon during the second panel mining. Depending on the mine ventilation system, this could result in methane concentrations exceeding regulatory limits. Hence, these findings provide insights into the potential risk of an unconventional gas well casing breach near a longwall mine under shallow cover.

Rock mechanics models are “data-limited,” i.e., one seldom knows enough about a rock mass to use computational models unambiguously. Statistical methods, however, are capable of being applied where there are good data but a limited understanding of certain natural phenomena, such as the creep of rock salt or elevated risk domains associated with violent failure of strata commonly referred to as coal bumps and coal bursts. Important to these evaluations are (1) having statistically valid data collected consistently and (2) incorporation of analytical calculations for quantifying geologic, mining and particularly geotechnical variables. By combining the strength of the statistical and analytical models, an improved “hybrid” model is created and utilized. To demonstrate the use of hybrid statistical-analytical techniques in rock mechanics problems, three case studies are used. The first case study involves a historic examination of a nuclear waste repository in rock salt, where mathematical models are built using excavation con- vergence data to identify significant variables and estimate future deformation and stability. This case study uses the convergence rate at up to 121 locations of different ages and geometries using monitoring data over the facilities' footprint excavated through 1998. The second case study focuses on ongoing analysis of coal burst mechanics and associated factors. Within the last three decades, a hybrid statistical-analytical methodology has been applied for identifying significant factors affecting coal bursts. This final hybrid model utilizes data from 30 case studies from Utah, Colorado, Kentucky, and other Eastern U.S. mines providing predictive capability for the entire United States coal fields. The last case study is the assessment of Castlegate Sandstone escarpment stability using historic data collected over 17,000-ft of sandstone escarpment exposure in the vicinity of longwall operations in Utah. Results from all three case studies are used for demonstrating the utility of the method in solving ground control problems.

Mineral sands mining for ilmenite, rutile, and zircon will disturb over 2,500 ha of prime agricultural farmland in Virginia and North Carolina (USA) over the next 20 years. Mining of the Virginia deposit was initiated in 1997 and approximately 750 ha have been disturbed to date with approximately 150 ha reclaimed to support a mix of agricultural post-mining land uses. While considerable university research and corporate effort were devoted to developing environmental management systems and reclamation protocols for these lands, specific indicators of sustainability and restoration success were lacking. By 2003, it became apparent to the mining operator (Iluka Resources), local land-owners/farmers, local government, and the regulatory authority that testable indicators of reclamation success were essential for long-term sustainability. Virginia Tech worked cooperatively with all stakeholders to review the pre-existing research base and to propose reasonable expectations of post-mining soil productivity levels. The state regulatory authority reinforced its position on a number of associated issues including necessity of topsoil return and specific comparative crop yield targets. Virginia Tech, Iluka Resources, and a local leaseholder (Carraway-Winn family) agreed to jointly manage a 45-ha research demonstration farm where the effects of alternative soil reconstruction practices are being rigorously monitored for both row crops (corn and wheat) and forage production. All mined land crop yields are also compared to an adjacent undisturbed exceptional quality prime farmland soil. Corn and wheat yields in 2005 and 2006 were significantly above county average yields (regulatory target level) and approximately 75% of undisturbed adjacent prime farmlands. This cooperative effort allows all clientele groups to objectively assess the post-mining productivity of these mined lands while providing an invaluable educational opportunity for the mining industry.

Today, approximately 31% of underground coal mining operations have designated occupations or areas with more stringent (below 2.0 mg/m3) respirable dust standards in place. Many U.S. coal mines have been able to maintain compliance with very low dust levels, and the Bureau of Mines, in an effort to identify those factors contributing to low dust levels, completed a survey of twelve continuous miner sections which were able to maintain their dust levels at or below 0.5 mg/m3. The quantity and quality of face ventilation appeared to be the most important factor in controlling dust exposure. The results directed Bureau research towards identifying improved face ventilation techniques for reducing quartz dust levels on continuous mining operations. This research has involved the evaluation of a half-curtain face ventilation technique which reduces the cross-sectional area of the entry, thus increasing the air velocity over the operator. The Bureau has also conducted extensive laboratory studies to compare tubing versus brattice, including an evaluation of both systems in a crosscut turn. In an effort to improve ventilation and reduce dust exposures of roof bolter operators working downwind of the continuous mining machine, the Bureau has evaluated two novel face ventilation systems. The first system consists of a fan discharge tubing technique which routes dusty air away from the return entry being bolted. In a technique similar to the fan/tubing concept, exhaust air from the upwind continuous miner face can be scrubbed using a dust collector to capture a portion of the dusty air, clean it, and supply it to the bolter operators as a split of clean intake air. A better understanding of face ventilation techniques should lead to solutions to the problem of more stringent dust standards due to quartz.

Much criticism has been levelled at bacterial oxidation over the quantities of air required for successful operation. Examination of the oxidation reactions and the assumptions concerning oxygen transfer made in the literature (1) indicate that the aeration requirements can be much less than those beirig suggested. Observations made on a large scale pilot test have confirmed reasonable aeration levels in extended site operation over a six month period. These aeration levels have implications for the engineering design and the power needed for aeration and agitation. Thus, these parameters effect both capital and operating costs as well as influencing the complexity of the design and normal operation. A number of companies have developed bacterial oxidation cultures intended for commercial ·expl oi tat.ion ( 2, 3, 4). Most of these cultures have been based on Thiobacillus and operate at temperatures between 30°c and 40°c. This temperature range limits their application in hotter regions unless means for both heating and cooling are provided in the design. Thiobacil!us cultures are also reported as not able to oxidize arsenic (III), which may limit the application of these cultures to successfully treat arsenopyritic ores and concentrates (5). BacTech (Australia) Pty Ltd has developed a culture which operates at temperatures above 4o0 c and which has been tested in a large site based continuous pilot plant at up to 55°c over a six month period. The culture showed resistance to high levels of soluble arsenic, allowing the arsenic to be retained in solution for control led precipitation and disposal. Data for. the arsenic precipitates indicated that these waste solids were relatively stable and, under the correct circumstances, were suitable for disposal into tailings dams without causing environmental problems.

The Eufaula bauxite-kaolin district in southeastern Alabama is an important source of raw material for the refractory industries in the United States. At the present time, five companies are mining and processing bauxite and kaolin from this district and a sixth company is holding substantial reserves. Mining operations are expanding, but finding new ore reserves is a major problem. The Geological Survey of Alabama sponsored geologic research in the Eufaula district to: 1) investigate the utilization of sandy kaolinS and other clays associated with bauxite-kaolin deposits; 2) find limits of the bauxite district, looking for possible extensions; and 3) study the geology of the district, looking for patterns or trends that may aid in finding new ore reserves. This work was done with the full cooperation of mining companies operating in the district and property owners. Research was aided by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama. The investigation included detailed geologic mapping of mines, drilling in selected areas, and making mineral analyses of bauxite and clays. The mapping was performed primarily by pace and compass because of the complexity of the deposits studied, but aerial photographs were used to a limited extent. Drilling included both auger and core drilling. The auger drilling was limited to 100 feet, but core holes were drilled as deep as 200 feet. The term 'bauxite,' as used here, indicates a mixture of minerals containing more than 50 percent gibbsite. Bauxitic clay is a mixture of gibbsite and kaolinite that contains more kaolinite than gibbsite. The term "kaolin" indicates a clay composed of predominantly kaolinite. Other clays in the Eufaula district are composed of kaolinite, illite, quartz, mica, and goethite or hematite.

By an order of the Executive Council of the Provincial Government dated January 18, 1979, a Royal Commission was established under the Public Inquiries Act to: 1) Examine the adequacy of existing Federal and Provincial requirements for the protection of the health and safety of workers associated with exploration, mining and milling of uranium in B.C. and for the protection of the environment and of the public. 2) Receive public input on these matters. 3) Make recommendations for setting and maintaining standards for worker and public safety and for the protection of the environment as a result of the exploration for the mining and milling of uranium ores. At that time,and at the present time in British Columbia, no uranium mines were, or are, in operation. Exploration at a number of sites was under way and one deposit, the Blizzard deposit, with estimated reserves of 1.92 million tonnes containing approximately 4.74 million kilograms of U308 was at an advanced stage of exploration. With our Terms of Reference, and because of the diverse geology of the western Cordillera which could potentially host a broad variety of uranium, deposit types, the Commission was faced with the task of considering environmental and health protection necessary for the potential development of [any] kind of uranium mineralogy situated in [any] of the environments found in British Columbia. Over the past 17 months since that time, much has transpired, culminating in the February 27, 1980 Provincial Government announcement of a seven year moratorium on exploration, mining and processing of uranium coupled with the termination of our Inquiry before completion of the hearings. The Government sebsequently modified its decision to terminate the Commission completely, deciding instead to stop the hearing but allow time for the Commission to gather in the work that had been initiated

Brazil is a country with continental dimensions. It hosts many different varieties of terranes and geological environments in its 8.5 million km2 (3.28 million sq miles). This mineral endowment has been important for the country's economic and social development process since the early colonial period, leaving Brazil with a legacy of almost 400 years of mining tradition. Mining in Brazil started in the early 17th century with diamond and gold discoveries. The made the country the leading producer of both for more than a century. This phase faded by the late 18th century when the alluvial deposits were depleted. It finally yielded to competing countries where technology and capital were being applied more efficiently. This period of mining dormancy lasted from the late 19th century until the first decades of the 20th century when Brazilian mining picked up. There was growing pressure on mineral resources by the affluence of the industrial society. The fast-growing demand resulting from the two world wars had brought the Brazilian mineral wealth back to the scene. This second Brazilian mineral boom made the country a leading producer of iron and manganese ore, quartz crystals and other strategic minerals. This expansion in Brazil's mining industry provided the basis for the country's industrialization process. This was led by the Brazilian steel and petroleum industries. Unfortunately, the thrust provided by this modern industrial basis was not properly used as a lever for further industrial development. The upstream industrialization process was not supported by the proper development of the raw materials supplying basis. The resulting industrial model was heavily dependent on imports of raw materials. It did not support the economic growth and faced fierce industrial competitiveness and sophistication that emerged with the postwar economic boom.

Prior to mining, all rocks contained in a mineral deposit must be placed in one of several categories known as ore types. Each ore type describes a different way that the rock will behave in processing. The ore type determines which process stream a particular mined unit will be sent to, sets expectations for process engineers and metallurgists, and forms the basis for recovery predictions and production estimates. At first, ore types are assigned mainly by geologists based on visible geological criteria (dominant ore mineralogy, estimated grade, rock type, alteration type). As metallurgical tests are carried out and process data accumulate, the resulting criteria may be factored into the ore typing process, typically as assays and recoverable metal using the relevant process(es). Other variables may also be incorporated into ore typing at operations if they are particularly important, such as grindability, preg-robbing, gangue reagent consumption, and the presence of especially deleterious minerals such as talc or smectite. The mine operation department may also redefine ore types and/or process destinations based on economic criteria. A “best” ore type is designated that (in theory) best describes how the rock will behave in processing. Codes representing this ore type are entered into the drill-hole database, then interpreted on cross sections and level plans, and finally added to the block model. Ore types are iteratively reexamined and adjusted over the life of a project. Major difficulties in effective ore typing are (1) lack of communication between geologists and metallurgists, (2) the imprecision inherent in imposing clean categories on messy natural systems without discrete divisions, (3) the need for ore types to provide useful information for a wide range of processes, (4) difficulties in scaling up laboratory test results to mine production, and (5) conflict among geological, metallurgical, and economic criteria for ore typing.

"From April 22 to 28, the eyes of the tunneling and underground construction world will be on San Francisco, CA, as the world’s most influential underground construction industry leaders gather at the Moscone Center for the 2016 World Tunnel Congress.Recognized as the most important international annual meeting for the industry, the 2016 version comes to the United States for the first time in 20 years and will be hosted by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA of SME). The conference will be held in lieu of the UCA’s biennial North American Tunneling Conference and will bring the strengths and resources of the UCA of SME and the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA). The result will be a conference with unmatched technical programming and a showcase of more than 200 exhibiting companies.A program committee led by Randy Essex of Mott MacDonald, Lonnie Jacobs of Frontier Kemper Constructors, Michael Mooney, of the Colorado School of Mines, Priscilla Nelson, of the Colorado School of Mines and Amanda Elioff of Parsons Brinkerhoff formed the program committee and worked for more than two years to build the program. The result is four technical sessions with five tracks in each session and 185 oral presentations.“One challenge was the sheer size of the group that would be assembled, perhaps 2,500 attendees or more, and the large number of abstracts we were likely to receive,” said Essex. “ We investigated extending the conference a fourth day, but that was not workable with the Moscone Center. We settled on having five concurrent technical tracks – something that has not been attempted in past NAT or RETC conferences to my knowledge. The next step was to develop suggested session titles that would span the breadth of subjects that would interest conference attendees as well as serve the conference theme.”"

The Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP) has been developed by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide a comprehensive tool for evaluating the performance of available secondary roof support systems and designs based on support strength, convergence, cost, installation time and material handling considerations. This program uses engineering models developed from full-scale testing of numerous supports under controlled loading conditions in the unique NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator load frame to determine the support load-displacement performance as a function of the various sup- port design parameters. Both standing supports, such as wood cribs installed within the entry, and intrinsic supports such as cable bolts, can be evaluated. Support systems can be designed and compared for use in a new mining section or to evaluate potential replacements for an existing design. The support design requirements are defined from 1) estimating the failure height in the immediate roof, 2) in-mine measure- ments of support and strata interaction or development of ground reaction curves from numerical modeling, 3) the performance of an existing support system, or 4) from any arbitrary load and convergence criteria. All settings can be saved to permit resuming an evaluation in progress at a later time. This paper presents the updated MS Windows version of this tool, which can be easily installed and run on a personal computer. This Windows implementation will feature a project and application scenario setup where multiple scenarios can be assigned to one project. Scenarios can then be compared on support parameters and cost. Cost parameters can be provided either as individual cost items or using a price grouping feature. Additional support performance curves and/or additional ground reaction curves will be distributed with program updates as new information is developed. Users can also provide their own support and/or ground reaction curves.

Carbon technology has largely superseded filtration plants as the more acceptable gold recovery technology. This has, over the last two decades, provided a tremendous driving force for the development of new equipment. One of the main focus areas of this technological development is the development of effi­cient interstage screening systems. Several variations of exter­nal and internal screens are available, with the more recent shift away from air cleaned units to mechanically swept units. This paper discusses the development of one such mechanically swept interstage screen and how the development led to the suc­cessful implementation of a carousel type of CIP operation. The first generation Pump-cell emerged as a consequence of the success achieved with the mechanically swept NKM screen, The idea was to modify the screen to incorporate the functions of pumping, screening and agitation in a single drive unit, the screen generating sufficient lift for interstage slurry flow so that all contactors would be at the same level. This sys­tem was further incorporated as a high intensity modular CIP contactor, i.e. low slurry residence times combined with high carbon concentrations. A discussion on the kinetic gold adsorp­tion theory and its manipulation in the design of the pump-cell concept is discussed in a paper published in a previous Randol Conference< 1), Testwork carried out at Vaal Reefs proved the concept of the Pump-cell on a pilot plant scale<2), which resulted in the building in 1990 of the first large Pump-cell plant at West Witwatersrand Gold Mine designed to treat 340m3 of pulp per hour and , even though the plant operated successfully with respect to gold recovery performance, a few problems were experienced with the basic engineering design(3),

In reference to the section "Excess pyrite," the author discusses difficulties in separating chalcopyrite from pyrite. A technique does exist, and has been used commercially, for the flotation, separation, and recovery, if desired, of both chalcopyrite and pyrite. The method was described in Mining Engineering, March 1966, "An Improved Flotation Method for Cornwall Sulfides." While it was not used on a porphyry copper ore, it was used on a chalcopyrite- pyrite-containing ore and might well have application. Both sulfides, chalcopyrite and pyrite, were floated simultaneously using xanthate as a collector and MIBC frother to produce a cleaned sulfide product. This concentrate was then thickened and conditioned at high solids with aeration and lime to a pH above 12.0 for a period of 1.5 to 2 hr. A supplemental suppressant, such as cyanide, could be used if necessary to sharpen the subsequent separation; however, it was not required at Cornwall. The conditioned sulfides were floated with two stages of cleaning to produce a high- grade chalcopyrite froth product and a pyrite sink product barren in copper. The separation at Cornwall gave a 28.6% Cu grade chalcopyrite product and a pyrite analyzing 0.06% Cu. A desliming step on the raw ore initially used at Cornwall for a period of time was later discontinued. Advantages to be found in using a strong sulfide collector, such as a xanthate, is the rapid flotation it induces and, generally, an ability to float at a coarser grind. A following regrind circuit could be used to give maximum liberation and produce a clean sulfide concentration. The "differential" separation is concerned primarily with grade and with assuring a barren pyrite for maximum recovery.

Gold production is one the most important mineral process­ing industries in Western Australia. The gold is usually found in either weathered oxidised zones, or associated with sulfides. In the latter case, oxidation is achieved by some form of chemical processing, such as roasting or more recently bacterial leaching. In all cases, gold is dissolved out of the oxidised matrix by cyanide solution. Pyrrhotite is an iron sulfide generally represented by the formula Fe1_,S where O x 0.125. Three different structural forms ofpyrrhotite are known to occur naturally, stoichiometric FeS (troilite), hexagonal pyrrhotite Fe1_xS and monoclinic pyrrhotite Fe7S8 [I]. Substitution of iron atoms within the pyrrhotite structure by other ions of similar atomic radius such as nickel, copper, cobalt and manganese is also possible [2], and often observed in natural pyrrhotite samples. Pyrrhotite is abundant in Western Australian sulfide mineral deposits which are commonly associated with gold bearing ores. It is generally believed that pyrrhotite has a detrimental effect on gold recovery from such ores, as it is commonly claimed to decompose in alkaline, aerated cyanide solutions to form iron cyanide complexes, thus consuming free cyanide, and to form sulfur/oxygen containing species such as sulfate, through oxidation of sulfur in pyrrhotite, which thus consumes oxygen. From information gleaned from the literature, claims about the high reactivity of pyrrhotite in cyanide appear to be based on early cyanidation studies performed on gold ore samples which have been poorly characterised, and contained impurities such as pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite, which may have also contributed to the levels of species observed in solution [3-5]. In addition, the investigations do not take into account that iron atoms in the pyrrhotite structure may have been partially substituted by other atoms that influence the solubility of pyrrhotite in cyanide solution.

The year 1988 unexpectedly turned out to be a good year for the US coal industry. In fact, it was a third consecutive year of record coal production. Accord¬ing to preliminary Energy Information Administration data for 1988, domestic coal consumption went up 5%, or 41 Mt (45 million st), from 1987. Coal exports were up by a surprising 13.6 Mt (15 million st). In 1988, 22.7 Mt (25 million st) of coal were drawn from stockpiles for consumption. Even so, US coal production increased to 862 Mt (950 million st). That was up 28 Mt (31 million st) from 1987. While coal consumption, exports, and production were up, delivered prices for steam coal continued to slide during the year. Metallurgical coal prices, however, firmed up and showed a moderate increase. This reflected tight metallurgical coal markets at home and abroad. Coal consumption US coal consumption reached 800 Mt (882 million st), compared with 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Increased metallurgical coal consumption was one factor. Most of the rise in coal consumption, however, was due to unexpectedly high electricity demand. Unseasonably hot summer weather al lowed added coal-fired electric generation to supplement the drought-related reduction in hydro-electric power supply. Electric utilities consumed 687 Mt (757 million st) of coal in 1988, 35.4 Mt (39 million st) more than in 1987. Coal-fired power plants remained the primary source of US electricity generation, providing 57% of the total in 1988. Coal consumption at coke plants increased 13%, to 38 Mt (42 million st), from the level consumed in 1987. This increase reflects the recent recovery in the iron and steel industry. Metallurgical coal consumption in 1988 could have been greater. But US coke plants reportedly reached their maximum practical production capacity. As a result, net US coke imports amounted to 1.45 Mt (1.6 million st). Despite increased industrial activities, steam coal consumption by industrial plants was up only slightly from the 1987 level, amounting to 69 Mt (76 million st) in 1988. Residential and commercial coal consumption remained virtually unchanged at 6.4 Mt (7 million st). Coal exports and imports US coal exports rebounded in 1988, reaching 86 Mt (95 million st). It was the highest level of annual US coal exports since 1982, when they reached 96 Mt (106 million st). An unusual set of factors led to an opening for US coal exporters in 1988: • a high level of industrial production in Japan and the European Economic Community, • supply disruptions due to labor problems at coal mines in Poland and Australia, • a drought-related reduction in hydro-electric power generation in Canada, requiring increased coal-fired generation, • China&apos;s problems in meeting its export commitments, and • a fall in the value of the US dollar. US metallurgical coal exports in 1988 amounted to 56 Mt (62 million st), 9.1 Mt (10 million st) more than the 1987 level. Europe, Japan, and Canada were the principal importers of US metallurgical coal in 1988. European countries, in particu¬lar, increased their take by one-third of US metallurgical coal. The labor problems in Poland and Australia contributed to these higher levels of imports. So did increases in pig iron production of 8% in Japan and 9% in the European Economic Community. US steam coal exports - including bituminous, anthracite, and lignite-increase to 30 Mt (33 million st). This was up from 25.4 Mt (28 million st) in 1987 Contributing to this overall rise were 1.8-Mt (2-million st) increase in shipments to Canada and a 2.7-Mt (3-million st) increase to Europe. Unaffected by the somewhat tighter world coal market, US coal imports showed a slight increase to 1.8 Mt (million st) in 1988. Colombia continue to be the leading exporter to the United States, followed by Canada and Venezuela. Venezuela&apos;s entry into the US market is a relatively recent one, having made its first significant shipment in the fourth quarter of 1987.

Introduction The issue of coal mining safety plays an important role in the United States&apos; growing dependence on coal to supply its future needs. This article will address the federal government&apos;s role, principally the US Bureau of Mines, in meeting this challenging growth and demand while reducing the social and economic costs attributed to injuries and fatalities in underground mining. Some interesting facts and projections with respect to the nation&apos;s energy picture will be discussed. This includes the distribution of its reserves and the projected role of coal in the energy and economics of the nation&apos;s future. Underground mining will continue to be an important means of providing this coal. The author will discuss how the Bureau of Mines&apos; research program addresses the problems of health and safety that grow out of the demand for more coal. Future projections First, a synopsis of salient facts and projections concerning the US&apos;s situation with respect to energy and the economy. Figure 1 depicts the relative quantities of recoverable energy reserves in the United States by their type. Most people are aware of the nation&apos;s use of oil. We hear a lot about natural gas. And we are aware of the controversy over the use of nuclear energy. But, while looking at Fig. 1, the question becomes, "Where will our fuel to meet the demand for energy in the future most certainly have to come from?" With 82% of the nation&apos;s recoverable fuel reserves being coal, the answer is irrefutable. Coal will be that source. Figure 2 is the present market for coal. It shows that 77% of the coal mined goes to supply electric utilities. Therefore, the coal industry as a whole is most sensitive to the trends and demands for electricity. It is less affected by what happens in other markets, such as export and direct industrial use. In fact, the coal industry is three times more sensitive to the electric utility market than to all other markets combined. Therefore, the trend in the demand for electricity must be examined. Electricity demand is expected to increase steadily over the next 15 years. It is projected to grow from its present 2.3 trillion kWh per year to 3.5 trillion kWh per year by the year 2000. The fuel to supply this increase in demand must come from somewhere. The question is "How much of this extra fuel will be coal?" Although the demand for electricity is predicted to increase, the demand for coal does not necessarily follow. Coal must maintain its fraction of the energy sources used for electricity generation if its demand is to increase at the same or greater rate as electricity. Except for a near-term dip in demand due to a slight increase in nuclear capacity, the domestic electric generation accruing to coal will go from 56% in 1985 to more than 60% in 2005. Thus, the predicted trend is for coal to become a larger part of the fuel mix for electric power generation. Similarly, looking at the most recent forecast for total coal consumption trends, it can be seen that for electric power generation alone, the coal industry must be able to supply an additional 316 Mt/a (348.5 million stpy) by the year 2000 (Fig. 3). It must be stressed here, though, that without significant improvements in mining safety, it can also be easily predicted that injuries and fatalities will increase in proportion to the increase in coal production. Will society consider that acceptable? This author does not believe so. Figure 4 examines the effect of coal prices on the price of electricity. The projections show that the already high proportion of fuel cost will become a greater fraction of the consumer price for electricity. Specifically in 1985, 36% of the price of electricity was the cost of the fuel. In 1995, 46% of the price of electricity will be the fuel cost. That implies that the price of coal will have an increasing influence on the consumer price for electricity. Thus, as coal is used more to generate electricity and as fuel becomes a greater

Introduction The South African Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., in Sishen, operates a large iron ore mine in the Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa. The mine is about 600 km (370 miles) west of Johannesburg. Its annual capacity is 100 Mt (110 million st) of ore and waste. Present production is 60 Mt/a (66 million stpy). The mine operates continuously six days a week. Primary equipment includes 55 154 t (170 st) Wabco and Unit Rig trucks and 14 P&H shovels. During 1979, a feasibility study into the application of a trolley assist system was launched. This was due to the escalation in diesel fuel costs and the appeal by the South African government to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Tests and economic evaluations proved the system technically feasible. The estimated discounted cash flow return exceeded 50%. Diesel fuel consumption would be reduced by 120 ML (31.7 million gal) in the next 10 years. The construction of 7.7 km (4.8 miles) of line and the conversion of 66 154 t (170 st) trucks were completed in March 1982. System description The conventional 154 t (170 st) diesel electric rear-dump haul-truck is equipped with two direct current wheelmotors in the rear axle. They drive the rear wheels through planetary gearboxes. A 1.2-MV (1600-hp) diesel engine and an alternator is used to power the wheelmotors. The trolley assist system consists of an overhead power line, a current collector mounted on the truck, and add-on control equipment where external electric power is routed by way of the current collector to the motorized wheels. The diesel engine is used to propel the truck on level sections. On inclines, the wheel-motors of the truck are coupled by way of a current collector to the externally generated electrical power supply for propulsion. The diesel engine, having lower output than the wheelmotors, limits the truck performance. Previously, maximum output was required from an engine on inclines. By supplying the wheelmotors from a virtually unlimited outside electric energy source, the truck performance is enhanced to the extent that speed is increased by 46% and fuel consumption reduced by 75%. System design The unique operational requirements of this mine rendered the already proven trolley pole system useless. Minimum loss in truck mobility and flexibility was required. Overhead lines and substations were required to be relatively light and portable. This enables fast repositioning of a line with no loss in material. These unique specifications set the base for the design of the Sishen system. Steel I-beams, 203 x 203 mm x 52 kg/m (8 x 8 in. x 35 lb per ft) with lengths varying from 8.3 to 11.3 m (27 to 37 ft), mounted on base plates about 4 x 2.6 m (13 x 8.6 ft) were used as masts. The masts were erected at about 50 m (165 ft) and the base plates covered with about 12 t (13 st) of iron ore to keep them absolutely stable. Results from the pilot installations indicated that using single cantilever cross arms for insulator and overhead conductor suspension was not practical. The tension in the overhead varied too much with temperature changes, causing too much sag in the lines. There had to be a positive and negative conductor. It was decided to suspend each polarity on an independent cantilever and keep the conductors under constant tension by weights acting through a two-to-one pulley tensioning arrangement. For each overhead conductor, a standard 160-mm (6.5-sq in.) grooved copper railway conductor was used. To obtain the necessary current carrying capacity, two of these conductors are used in parallel per pole. Insulators are rated at 4 kV and are of the composite type. An 11-kV three-phase line, supported by the pantograph line masts on the opposite side of the dc line, feeds the rectifier stations. The rectifier stations consist of an 11-kV to 860-V, three-phase 1.46 MVA transformer and a three-phase diode bridge rectifier. For most industrial minerals, the color is directly associated with economic value. In terms of physics, the principal property that defines the term ?color? is the intensity of light reflected (or transmitted) by an object over the visible band, comprehended between 400 and 700 nm. This reflectance spectrum serves as the starting point for a variety of color-describing factors, the most common in the mineral industry being the brightness (TAPPI, 1977 and 1986) and the L*a*b* system (HunterLab, 2008). Quality specifications for mineral products are usually based on these colorimetric parameters. This market is becoming increasingly more selective and demanding over the quality of raw materials and alongside the traditionally controlled characteristics, such as particle size distribution and chemical composition, a trend exists towards the establishment of increasingly more strict specifications for the optical properties of these materials. This is due to the fact that most plants consuming these industrial minerals incorporate them into products in which the visual appearance is controlled. For these plants, most of them being the manufacturers of plastics, paper, paints, and ceramics, variations in the color of mineral materials result in difficulties to achieve the right color in the final product. Therefore, these plants set strict specifications for colorimetric parameters such as whiteness and yellowness, as well as colorimetric coordinates like L*, a*, and b*. For the manufacturer of industrial minerals, this translates into difficulties simply because many of these parameters are usually alien to the tradition of the mining industry. The main quality parameter in the kaolin industry is brightness, which is a weighted average of reflectance values over the range of 400-510 nm (TAPPI, 1977). Due to the lack of a better property, producers tend to use brightness to also assess the quality of the in situ ore and along the processing operations. However, the unprocessed kaolin is often accompanied by ?contaminant? minerals. For Brazilian kaolins, which are the object of this study, the most important contaminants are hematite (Fe2O3), goethite (FeOOH), and anatase (TiO2). Each of these contaminant minerals has a distinct color and behaves differently during the processing of the kaolin ore. Hematite and goethite in particular are particularly strong pigmenting agents and at concentrations as low as 100 ppm they can make the difference between a high-quality white pigment product for paper coating and waste material. As each Fe-bearing contaminant has a different color and responds differently to processing operations (for example, magnetic separation, chemical bleaching, selective flocculation, and/or flotation in the case of kaolin), the in situ brightness tends to show a poor correlation with the brightness of the final product. Brightness measurements are sometimes complemented with X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis of Fe and Ti, but the total oxide content provided by XRF is also poorly correlated with product quality because Fe may be in the form of goethite, hematite, or inside the crystalline structure of kaolinite. Thus, a more robust technique capable of distinguishing each mineral phase is desirable. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy has been used to analyze iron oxide/hydroxide content both qualitatively (Torrent and Barrón, 2003; Liu et al., 2011) and quantitatively (Jiet al., 2002 and 2006). These authors correlate slopes and inflection points at characteristic absorption bands with oxide/hydroxide content in natural soils. The approach presented here involves the extensive use of the Kubelka-Munk (K-M) theory, which has been used for color matching (Schabbachet al., 2009 and 2011) and particle size determination (Otsuka, 2004) in a simplified version. Unfortunately, the scattering constant S is very difficult to measure for dry powders, because the equations require a thin layer of material. Attempts have been made (Gonçalves and Petter, 2007, and Gonçalves, 2009) but the experimental errors tend to be high. Thus, this paper aims to develop a tool for the quantification of contaminant minerals in kaolin based on the K-M theory without resorting to measurements over thin layers. This tool is based on a new two-constant approach, which takes into account differences in scattering between materials over the whole measured spectrum. The experimental dataset consists of the reflectance spectra of mixtures between a bleached kaolin and synthetic Fe pigments.
