Production reporting is a natural computer application and is often one of the first applications implemented by new computer users. Automation of a manual reporting system is a good place for new computer users to gain computing experience because generation of basic reports - is fairly straightforward, and automation can often be justified easily on the basis of clerical cost savings. Computers are particularly well-suited for reporting applications which generally satisfy the criteria for effective computerization. Three characteristics must be present to effectively utilize a computerized system: 1) The potential application must be precisely definable. If an algorithm for data processing cannot be developed, data cannot be processed. 2) The operation to be performed must be repetitive. If a particular function is only going to be performed once, computerized systems development is probably not justified. 3) The volume of the data to be processed must be relatively large. If only a few items of data must be manipulated, manual methods are probably adequate. Although a computer can perform only a few functions (it can compute; it can make comparisons; it can rearrange data), it can perform these functions much faster and more accurately than a human being can. The ability to classify and reclassify data in a variety of ways and the ability to summarize data make the computer an ideal tool for production reporting. Production reports can be classified into three major categories, depending on their purpose. Reports can be used for (1) informative, (2) analytical, and (3) control purposes.

Two 8.2 m diameter flood control tunnels are being constructed in the Taylor Shale Formation beneath San Antonio, Texas. These tunnels use precast concrete segments as final lining. This paper describes the features of the segments chosen for this project. The tunnels are being excavated with a hybrid Tunnel Boring Machine. This paper also describes the features of the TBM which make the machine compatible to the type of segments chosen.

Kerosine, fuel oil No. 2, vapor oil, and fuel oil No. 6 were separated into general hydrocarbon fractions by ion exchange chromatography and adsorption chromatography. The collecting properties of these fractions were evaluated by flotation of molybdenum and copper minerals from a natural chalcopyrite ore. Paraffin fractions and aromatic fractions of low polarity produced the best molybdenum recoveries. Selective flotation of molybdenite from copper sulfide minerals was not possible with any of the chromatographic fractions.

Flotation separation and recovery of value minerals from ores containing fibrous silicate minerals are known to be quite challenging. Earlier studies have established that the metallurgical challenges (poor selectivity and recovery, high energy consumption, etc.) arise from the impact of the fibrous minerals (with high aspect ratio) on pulp rheology, which was found be rather complex. The complex rheological behavior of ore suspensions containing particles with high aspect ratio and its influence on flotation outcome are investigated in this study. Flotation tests and rheological measurements were carried out with both ores (containing fibrous minerals) and a model system comprising nylon fibers (chemically inert) added to a copper ore that had no fibrous mineral. These studies allowed the determination of contributions of physical properties of the fiber to pulp rheological behavior. Optical microscopy images of the fiber pulp indicated that the fibers entangled to form two levels of microstructures: two-dimensional (2D) aggregates under semi-dilute (< 20% solids) conditions and three-dimensional (3D) microstructures at concentrations > 30% solids. The yield stress (σ) values determined for the fiber pulp were logarithmically related to the volume fraction of the 2D/3D structures. The relationships developed here for different ARs showed that the yield stress of a flotation pulp changes with respect to shape, size, and the concentrations of the microstructures. Implications to the effects of such entangle networks on selectivity of flotation separation are discussed.

"Molybdenum, in the form of molybdenite, is a common byproduct of many copper mining and concentrating operations. While the recovery of most copper sulfide minerals is principally liberation controlled, the recovery of molybdenite is much more complex, with fully liberated particles commonly lost to tailings.A geometallurgical investigation was undertaken of molybdenite from the Bingham Canyon deposit with the aim of determining what effects, if any, mineralogy and the mineralogical attributes of morphology, angularity, liberation and size have on molybdenite recovery in the processing circuit. A set of samples was collected from the ores and products of Rio Tinto Kennecott’s Copperton Concentrator. The samples were analyzed by normal polarized reflected light microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and scanning electron microscopy using a Mineral Liberation Analyzer, revealing the presence of two distinct types of molybdenite, which are the two polytypes: hexagonal (2H) and rhombohedral (3R). The 2H polytype occurs as textbook-shaped particles in quartz-molybdenite veins located in the core of the deposit, while the 3R polytype occurs as disseminated, ball-shaped particles with a dull or frosted appearance along the margins of the mineralized intrusive body or central core. Each polytype exhibited metallurgical properties consistent with those reported in the literature. The 2H polytype is easily ground, kinetically “faster” floating and displays surface attributes that are amenable to higher rates of recovery. This commonly results in the production of a high-quality molybdenum concentrate under normal operating conditions at most copper concentration operations. The 3R polytype is difficult to grind, kinetically “slower” floating and displays surface attributes that are less amenable to recovery. Therefore, in deposits with higher concentrations of the 3R polytype, modifications to operating parameters may be necessary to improve the recovery of molybdenite.A preliminary investigation into the metal budget of porphyry copper and molybdenum deposits indicated a possible positive correlation between total economic metal budget and polytype content. Higher concentrations of the 3R polytype appear to be more prevalent in gold-enriched porphyries than in molybdenum-enriched porphyries. This may help explain why it is easier to obtain higher rates of recovery in molybdenum ± tungsten-rich deposits, which contain little to none of the 3R polytype. There is a potential for the metal budget of a porphyry deposit to be used as an indication of the molybdenite polytype present as well as its impact on the economics, in terms of exploration, and the processing circuit, in terms of plant design."

For centuries tunnellers have made use of the experience of miners. In West German coalmining tunnellers have returned the impulses in recent years by giving the miners valuable stimuli with the result that a technology has evolved which benefits drill and blast heading, opens the door to TBM heading and has developed special measures for difficult strata conditions in deep coal mines. WHAT DO THESE ROCK HEADINGS LOOK LIKE? The main roadways dealt with in this paper have crosssections of 20 to 40 m2, big enough to allow the massive airflows needed to aircondition the mines. Because of the difficult strata conditions they have to be supported: in shotfired headings mainly with multi-element arches, in TBM headings with rings of 6 to 6.5 m diameter. In West German coalmining the majority of rock headings are blasted. The proportion of rock headings driven by TBM was 11 % in 1980 and 16 % in 1981, a rising trend expected to continue. Drill and blast headings Drill and blast headings are normally equipped with two or three-boom electro-hydraulic jumbos, electro-hydraulic crawler-mounted loaders with 1.2 m3 shovel capacity, a movable working platform and both chain and belt conveyors for dirt clearance to the minecar loading point. Fans and air-condition plant complete the equipment. Spacing between arches is usually 0.8 m. Investment for this type of mechanisation works out at around 1.3 m DM.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines has been investigating the application of thiosulfate to recover gold directly from low grade refractory carbonaceous ores for the past four years. Statistical experimental methods were used to determine the effects of various leaching parameters on both gold extraction and thiosulfate consumption. Seven variables were investigated, including thiosulfate, copper, ammonia, sulfite, and sulfate concentrations, leaching time, and leaching atmosphere. This information was used in face-centered cubic (FCC) surface response experiments to define the optimum leaching conditions for a low grade ore. Two models were generated from the data to predict gold extraction and thiosulfate consumption as a function of the leaching parameters. The models predicted a gold extraction of 67 pct and reagent consumption of 2 kg [S2032/mt ore at 0.25 M S2032-, 0.0014 M Cu2+, 0.27 M NH,OH, 0.00625 M SO;-,] and leaching for 16 h. Actual tests resulted in 62 pct gold extraction with 0.93 kg S2032- consumed/mt ore. Subsequent column leaching tests have further demonstrated the viability of applying this technology to recover gold from carbonaceous ores without first pretreating the material. Gold extractions in the column tests ranged from 69 to 78 pct with thiosulfate consumption ranging from 0.4 to 5.4 kg/mt ore. These results compare to <5 pct gold extraction using standard cyanide leaching conditions.

Investigations in the Ortiz Mountains have revealed the relationship of igneous activity and gold mineralization to the Tijeras-Canoncito Fault System (TCFS). The northeast-trending TCFS passes through the southeastern part of the Ortiz Mountains where its principal structure is the asymmetric Ortiz Graben. Several fault blocks, containing up to 305 m (1000 ft ) of Eocene Galisteo Formation, comprise the graben that has up to 1220 and 610 m (4000 and 2000 ft) of stratigraphic separation on its southeast and northwest sides, respectively. Intrusions in the Ortiz Mountains can be subdivided into two petrochemical types: an older calcalkaline suite and a younger alkaline suite. The calc-alkaline rocks are characterized by extensive sill, dike, and laccolithic bodies of latite-andesite intrusives and at least one younger (?) granodiorite stock at Candelaria Mountain. The alkaline rocks consist of a large nepheline-bearing augite-monzonite stock, a latite-porphyry hypabyssal plug, the Ortiz diatreme (vent breccia), and trachytic-latite dikes radial to the diatreme. K-Ar age determinations suggest the older suite to be 34 +/-2.2 million years while the younger alkaline rocks range from about 30 to 26 million years. Gold mineralization in the Ortiz Mountains occurs in five distinct environments: brecciapipes, skarns, veins, porphyry-like stockworks, and placers. Lode mineralization is associated with the alkaline suite of intrusive rocks postdating the Ortiz diatreme and predating most of the trachytic-latite radial dikes.

It is well known that processing of the high-silicon bauxites for obtaining alumina by the hydrochemical Bayer process is irrational due to the significant losses of alumina and alkali with red mud. The main source of losses of the mentioned compounds under the conditions of leaching by the Bayer process is the formation of difficultly soluble sodium alumosilicate of the composition Na20 .Al203, 2Si02 . n H20. A conventional method of an extra recovery of alumina as well as of regeneration of alkali out of red mud is the high-temperature sintering of the latter with soda and limestone with the subsequent leaching of sodium aluminate from the sinter by water or soda solution. A sequential version of the Bayer-sintering flow chart recommended for the prosessing of bauxites with an increased content of silica is based on this method. However, the sintering method is not the only alkaline method allowing to make an extra recovery of alumina likewise of alkali from red mud. Our investigations showed/I/, that the components mentioned can be recovered by a pure hydrochemical method of treating red mud with concentrated alkaline solutions, with lime (Ca0) being present, that was earlier succesfully used in the development of the hydrochemical method of processing nepheline rocks/2/. "INTRODUCTION Site location and history The Holden Mine is a former underground copper mine that was developed and operated by the Howe Sound Mining Company (Howe Sound) from 1938 to 1957. The mine is located in north-central Washington State, U.S., near Lake Chelan in the area shown as Holden Village in Figure 1. Although Rio Tinto never owned or operated the mine, they are managing and funding a several hundred million dollar clean-up to prevent future water and soil contamination and to reclaim the former mine site under the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Superfund process. The former mine included an onsite mill and a nearby housing complex for the miners. Howe Sound developed the mine as a series of near-horizontal drifts and tunnels, interspersed with stopes and shafts that connect different mine levels underground. The tunnels that were excavated to develop the mine total nearly 100 km in length.During development of the underground workings, Howe Sound removed more than 230,000 cubic meters (m3) of waste rock from the tunnels and deposited this material in two waste rock piles. Ore was processed from the mine in the onsite mill to produce a copper concentrate that was shipped off site for smelting. Roughly 10 million tonnes of tailings were produced as a by-product of the milling operation, most of which were deposited in three large impoundments (Tailings Piles 1, 2 and 3) directly south of and adjacent to Railroad Creek. Howe Sound closed the mine in 1957. In 1961, the property was transferred to Holden Village, Inc. (Holden Village), a not-for-profit corporation that maintains a year-round community and operates an interdenominational religious retreat in the former miners’ town. With the exception of the patented private land, the remainder of the Site is on National Forest lands and is administered by the U.S. Forest Service. The mine is remote. It is only accessible by boat or float plane from Chelan, Washington, up Lake Chelan to Lucerne, nearly 40 km. Vehicle access from Lucerne to the mine is provided through a 17.5-km-long winding gravel road that climbs 640 meters in elevation. The general site features are shown in Figure 2. Physical setting The Holden Mine is located on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountain Range at an elevation between 975 and 1,050 m above mean sea level. Holden Mine was developed adjacent to Railroad Creek, which lies in a glacial U-shaped valley carved into the igneous and metamorphic bedrock with steep-sided slopes (Figure 2)."

Coal is broadly recognized as sure, competitive, diversified, not vulnerable and predictable in price energy resource. In power generation coal is playing a dominant role in the EU-27 with 25% of installed capacity and almost one third of the power generation. The role played by the domestic resources and especially by coal are increasingly becoming the focus of the EU energy strategy. There is a strong pressure for the decarbonization of the energy mix. The Emission Trading system (ETs) can have an impact on the shift to lower carbon-intensity fuels. The impact of ETs on coal can be important, because it is very short sighted and only defines the period up to 2008-2012. The ETs CO2 regime must ensure that investment in coal-fired plants in the long term are supported. EU Research Institutes and Coal Industry identified an important CO2 reduction potential by improving the efficiency of the conversion of solid fuels into electricity. Highly efficient clean coal technologies can contribute to reasonable costs and challenge the issue of climate change. It must be pointed out that the EU Energy policy should now concentrate on the necessity to effectively support demonstration projects and to create the legal framework for the integrated approach of efficiency enhancement and CCS. It is not a right approach to implement CCS before the technology is demonstrated and before it is clear that it will be commercially viable.

INTRODUCTION This paper summarizes an investigation conducted to determine the relationship, if any, between reported occurrences of abnormal levels of carbon dioxide (C02) gas and the construction of a 2.44meter diameter main sewer tunnel under South Eighty-Fourth Street, West Allis, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Specific objectives of the study were to determine: (1) the sources of C02, (2) the significance of each C02 source, (3) how C02 could move to areas where it was reported to occur in abnormal concentrations, and (4) what actions could be implemented to eliminate elevated C02 levels associated with the tunneling operation. To accomplish study objectives, expertise from several scientific and engineering disciplines was required including chemistry, geochemistry, microbiology, hydraulics, and hydrology. Pertinent documents were reviewed and field data pertaining to each aspect of the study were collected as required and examined to evaluate existing conditions. Background On or about February 1, 1971, gas with a composition different from normal atmospheric air was reported to enter basements and wells of residences in the vicinity of South Eighty-Fourth Street, West Allis, Wisconsin. Examination of the gas composition revealed that it possessed an elevated concentration of C02 and a depleted concentration of oxygen (02). Public health officials who investigated the appearance of the objectionable gas concluded within reasonable certainty that the elevated C02 concentrations were associated with the tunnel construction under Eighty-Fourth Street.

Induction times for a variety of minerals have been measured at a particle bed. Electrostatic repulsive forces between bubble and particle generally are of secondary importance in determining the hydrophobic state; nevertheless, the shortest induction times are measured at the isoelectric point of the solid. More importantly, the study shows that the film-rupture mechanism at a polished surface might be different from that at a particle bed. The induction time measured at a particle bed, besides being dependent on the surface chemistry of the system, shows a definite relationship to particle size and density. Theoretical analysis suggests that such a measured induction time at a particle bed should properly be defined as an attachment time which consists of the induction time and the film-displacement time. Thus one portion of the measured attachment time is the induction time, the time required to thin the water film between the particle surface and the gas bubble to a critical thickness so that rupture of the film takes place (&apos;1)&apos; The other portion of the measured attachment time is the time required for the film to be displaced to such an extent that the attachment is stabilized with respect to the upward motion of the bubble and the downward gravitational force acting on the particle (&apos;2)&apos; Further, the present study illustrates that &apos;2 is related to the hydrophobic character of the surface, the rate of film displacement after rupture, the upward velocity of the captive bubble, and, most importantly, the particle size and density.

4.1 THE GENERAL COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS Clay-based grouts are visco-plastic systems; they are made by adding structure-forming reagents to a clay mineral mortar. Small amounts of cement and various chemical ad¬ditives constitute the reagents. If necessary, fillers also are added. The distinguishing feature of clay-based grouts is that throughout their entire stabilization period they do not form a crystallized structure as does cement grout. The structure of stabilized clay-based grouts does not deteriorate during minor rock movement or upon the initiation of blast¬ing during the construction of a shaft or a drift. Because they can possess good rheological properties during the ini¬tial structure-forming period relative to cement grouts, clay¬based grouts are not easily eroded from large fractures and karstic cavities by flowing ground water. In addition, their finely dispersed clay particles facilitate a greater fracture penetration capacity, especially in dual porosity rocks. Numerous investigations of the structural-mechanical and rheological properties of clay-based grouts by STG have demonstrated that the most effective grouts for pre¬venting the inflow of ground water into underground work¬ings are grouts that have a cement content of 8 to 10% (90 to 120 kg/m3) of the clay grout by mass. The grout should have a density of 1.18 to 1.30 T/m3. Various additional substances and chemicals can be added as additional fillers and structure-forming reagents. In pure ground water at temperatures above freezing, sodium silicate in the amount of 0.8 to 1 % by mass normally is the only structure-forming reagent that is necessary if the proper clay is selected and if it is available. The production process for making clay-based grout is divided into two stages: 1) the production of an initial clay mortar with specified properties and 2) the production of a clay-cement additive grout mixture using the initial grout along with the structure-forming reagents, including the ce¬ment. The properties of clay-based grouts depend on the phys¬ical-mechanical properties of the initial clay mineral, the properties of the cement and the properties of the chemical reagents that are added. 4.1.1 TECHNOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS The dynamic shear stress&apos; To, the viscosity 11, the static shear stress2 0, the maximum shear stress of the structured that the rheological and structural-mechanical prop¬erties of clay-based grouts must fall within the following limits: the dynamic shear stress To = 50 to 200 Pa; the viscosity -9 = 0.02 to 0.07 Pa sec; the static shear stress 0 = 150 to 600 Pa; the plasticity strength Pm of the structure one minute after preparation (according to P.A. Rebinder&apos;s method) equals 150 to 500 Pa. The plasticity strength 10 days after preparation is ? 0.15 MPa. The general relationship of the change in the structural strength of clay-based grouts relative to stabilization time is shown in Fig. 32. The figure shows that the structure-form¬ing process for clay-based grouts is characterized by three stages. These stages correspond to the time periods required for conducting the principal operations during the injection of the grout into a fractured aquifer as described below. Stage I, corresponding to the time period T1, reflects the small development of structural strength during early stabi¬lization. During this time, the structural strength must not preclude the capability to pump the grout. The time Tl must correspond to the length of pumping time from the moment water is shut off and mixing occurs until the pump stops forcing the grout through the manifold block and pipeline into the fractured rock as described subsequently herein. Stage II, corresponding to the time interval T2, reflects a sharp but controllable increase in the structural strength of the grout. The length of time period T2 is controlled by the addition of appropriate reagents. Stage III produces the final value of the structural strength. This final strength is used to design the dimensions of the isolation curtain. Consequently, the development of grouts is guided by two principal criteria: 1) the grout must develop the highest possible structural-mechanical properties and 2) it must be able to be pumped by a piston pump prior to final stabili¬zation. Successful grouting depends to a large extent on the correct design of a grout for each specific case. It is impor-

The effectiveness of the grouting of saturated, fractured rock in the vicinity of underground workings depends to a great extent on the correct interpretation of the specific hydrogeological conditions at the site. During the planning of grouting operations, calculations of the hydrogeologic co-efficients and of the parameters of the isolating grout curtain(s) and the procedures for forming the curtain(s) must be based on valid hydrogeologic characteristics of the fracture system of the rock within each hydrostratigraphic unit (Anon., 1976). This chapter presents a discussion of the background information that must be collected for these purposes. Details of testing are presented in Chapter 3. The general design of new or the reconstruction of existing underground workings requires a broadly based organization having the expertise to develop a grouting operations plan once it acquires the necessary information. The needed information includes: 1) general information about the hydrogeologic section, 2) the engineering design of the underground workings, 3) the geology of the region, 4) the hydrochemistry of the ground water, 5) the hydraulic properties of the rock, 6) the characterization of all gases present, and 7) characterization of the rock&apos;s physical-mechanical properties which is necessary to avoid or control hydrofracturing . The geological documentation portion of the hydrogeological investigation is prepared based on the results of geologic mapping, geophysical surveys and on geo-exploratory operations at a regional and local scale. Geological data from the excavation of other underground workings in adjacent areas of the region is also included. Finally the results of site specific investigations in boreholes constructed at the site of the proposed underground activity are incorporated. A section of the preliminary report entitled "General Information about the Project Site" patterned after the parent STG guidance document on this subject must be com- piled based on the contents of geological reports and on the general construction plan for a new project or the plan for reconstruction of an existing operation. This section of the preliminary report must contain concise information about the conditions under which the planned grouting operations are to be conducted. The information must cover the geo- graphic, administrative, and economic subject areas also. Information about sources of electrical power, heat and water supplies, the presence and characteristics of local construction materials suitable for making grout (particularly clay and cement for the clay-based grout), transportation, and the status of communication lines and other services must be included in this section. Map scales for this section should be on the order of 1:25,000. The technical characterization of planned underground workings is presented in a project report chapter called "General Construction Plan for a New or the Restoration of an Old Operation. " The characterization comprises concise information about the purpose of the workings, the planned depths (for shafts) and the length (for horizontal and inclined workings), the inside and excavated diameters (for shafts), the cross-sectional area (for inclined and horizontal workings), and the face and mouth markers. If excavated underground workings exist in the region, then a concise description of them must be provided. The characterization of all excavations and all operational conditions must be specified. The location within the general structure of the proposed operation is specified. Flow charts must be included in this section that show: 1) the plan for opening the deposit, 2) the plans of the mining operations, and 3) the planned geological sections as they relate to the main workings. These graphical flow charts and appendices are drawn in scales of 1:2000 or 1:5000. 2.1 GEOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION The geological characterization of a site of proposed underground workings includes the following principal subject areas: stratigraphy, lithology, structural geology and a characterization of the status of fracturing. 2.1.1 STRATIGRAPHY AND LITHOLOGY A description of the geological section of the rocks to be intersected by the planned underground workings is complied on the basis of: 1) research data derived from core extracted from exploratory boreholes and monitoring boreholes, 2) the documentation and mapping of all natural out- crops in the region, 3) the data from all existing under-ground workings in the regions where operations are being canied out already, along with data from adjacent regions, 4) the data from surface and borehole geophysical investigations (standard and specially developed logging methods, and 5) regional stratigraphy. The geological description of the rock must express the maximum detail possible. At this point in time, approximately 800 M tonnes (880 M tons) of coal are mined each year in the United States. Forty percent of this coal or approximately 320 M tonnes (350 M tons) is taken from underground coal mines, and from this subtotal 16% or 50 M tonnes (55 M tons) is from longwall panels (1). If, for the sake of argument, an aver- age extraction thickness of 1.5 m (5 ft), an aver- age extraction ratio of 50 percent and an in situ density of 1360 kg/ms (85 lb/ft3) for this coal are assumed, then the 320 M tonnes (350 M tons) of underground coal translates to over 310 km2 (76,000 acres) that is undermined each year. Con- sidering that the total U.S. production of under- ground longwall coal to date is approximately 345 M tonnes (380 M tons), then a total of approximately 165 km2 (41,000 acres) (considering 100% extraction) has been directly undermined by longwall coal production in the United States. If the angle-of- draw is considered, the total area affected by longwall subsidence in the United States is probably twice the above value or 330 km2 (82,000 acres) . In the future, a number of other miscellaneous factors seem likely to multiply the number of potentially damaging situations that occur due to longwall coal mining. First, the overall production of coal in the United States is expected to gradually increase. This factor is further com- pounded by both the fact that the percentage of the overall production due to underground mining is bound to increase, since the vast majority of U.S. reserves (68%) are only recoverable by underground methods, and the fact that the percentage of the underground production of coal that is recovered by longwall mining is drastically increasing (1). Finally, as the nicest underground reserves are depleted, the remaining reserves will tend to be deeper, which increases the affected surface area, and under denser population concentrations, which increases the likelihood and severity of possible damages. Overall, considering the number of factor which are biased towards increasing the amount of undermined acreage, it appears that there must certainly be a corresponding increase in the number of possible damaging situations due to longwall-induced, ground subsidence.

Voluminous deposits of commercial-grade phosphate occur in sedimentary strata in a 350,000 km2 (135,000 mi2) area of the middle Rocky Mountains of North America known as the Western Phosphate Field. The Permian marine strata that host the phosphate were deposited on the western margin of the North American craton and subsequently deformed, first by folding and thrust faulting of the Laramide orogeny, and then by Cenozoic Basin and Range block faulting. Carbonate fluorapatite is the primary phosphorus-bearing mineral. Organic matter is abundant in some strata, and both biogenic and non-biogenic pyrite are also present. Certain strata are enriched in several trace elements, especially in arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo), selenium (Se), vanadium (V), uranium (U), and zinc (Zn). Phosphate has been mined from the Western Phosphate Field for nearly 100 years. Phosphate mining and processing constitutes the largest mineral industry of Idaho, producing more than $600 million in processed mineral value in 1997. Resource management agencies, phosphate producers, and others are concerned about the release of Se from phosphate mine wastes, especially at Maybe Canyon, and the potential effects that Se and other trace elements may have on the environment and on human health. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Mineral Resources Team scientists initiated a multidisciplinary study of the Permian Phosphoria Formation and related rocks in the south- eastern Idaho sector of the Western Phosphate Field in response to a request by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Studies to date reveal that Se is present in several phases, including native Se, and in an as yet unidentified form, possibly an organo-Se compound. Selenium is also present in pyrite and sphalerite. Selenium concentrations range from 1.2 to greater than 1,000 parts per million (ppm) in samples collected from exposures of the Meade Peak Phosphatic Shale Member of the Phosphoria Formation (Meade Peake) at Enoch Valley. The results suggest that Se concentrations vary spatially across strata and with depth, perhaps comparable to spatial variations of phosphate and organic carbon concentrations throughout the Western Phosphate Field demonstrated in previous studies. Some Se-enriched strata may be of adequate dimension to allow selective extraction during mining. Such units could be handled separately from the main ore process or waste streams and isolated in order to reduce the potential for release of Se to the environment

In order to reach a large, untapped reserve of high-quality coal, D8 Cloverlick mine proposed to mine a corridor nearly 2,000 ft deep beneath the Benham Spur of Black Mountain, Kentucky’s highest peak. D8 Cloverlick mine was extracting the Owl seam, but the corridor’s route lay approximately 70 ft above century-old mine workings in the C–(Darby) seam. Adding to the concern, three serious coal bursts had recently occurred in nearby Owl seam workings.
