Toxic gases produced by the detonation of six explosives were measured in an underground hardrock metal mine during actual mining operations. The six explosives included two semigelatin dynamites, three slurry explosives and an ammonium nitrate, fuel-oil/ammonia dynamite combination. Explosives were detonated at the face of a drift and the toxic gases produced by the detonation were trapped to the end of the drift by a bulkhead located a short distance away from the face. Toxic gas concentrations were then measured with direct readout instruments and together with the containment volume, the toxic gas volumes per mass of explosive were calculated. Toxic gas measurements were found in the following ranges (ft3/lbm): NO, 0.010-0.035; NO2, 0.003-0.019; CO, 0.08-0.30; S02, 0.00-0.05; and CO2, 0.7-1.8. Results showed that toxic gas production (ft3/lbm) correlated with the densities (kg/m3) and energy densities (kJ/kg) of the explosives tested.

The Rowland Coal Preparation Plant is located on Workman's Creek in Raleigh County, West Virginia, approximately 20 miles Northwest of Beckley and 10 miles Southeast of Ameagle. It is owned and operated by the Rowland Division of Consolidation Coal Company. This paper describes the plant flowsheet, process considerations that were evaluated in its development, and observations made during and since the plant was constructed. The final flowsheet was developed specifically to wash the coal from the Rowland Mine and contains several equipment combinations and applications heretofore never placed in a single, commercial operation. The major process equipment is presented in a functional description of the flowsheet. The coal reserves are leased from the Rowland Land Company and consist primarily of #2 Gas and Middle Eagle coals and various major splits of the Middle Eagle seam. The Rowland Coal Preparation Plant was designed to process 560 TPH of raw coal consisting of 50 percent #2 Gas coal intimately mixed with 50 percent Middle Eagle coal and containing lumps no larger than a 12-inch cube.

The National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program since 1974 has been designed to accomplish a comprehensive coverage of the 48 conterminous States and Alaska to evaluate the total uranium resources of the USA. This resource base includes both ore reserves and potential resources. Techniques include airborne radiometric and magnetic surveys, by hydrogeochemical surveys, surface and subsurface geologic studies, and the application of improved geochemical exploration and resource assessment methods (Table 1). In brief review, the current status of each of the five basic NURE elements is as follows: In the Aerial Surveys, in the conterminous 48 states, the flying has been completed in 89 of the NTMS 10 x 2° NURE quadrangles, and is in progress in 39 more (Figure 1). Complete quadrangle data have already been open filed for 46 additional quadrangles, for a total of 174 for which data gathering is either complete or in progress. In Alaska, the flying is complete in 42 quadrangles, and quadrangle data have been open filed for 34 more, for a total of 76 (Figure 2).

While flue gas scrubbing with alkaline solutions is one of the oldest methods of removing SO2 from flue gas, a satisfactory scrubbing system for this application, which is both technically and economically viable, has yet to be developed. Interest in alkaline scrubbing has continued because of its basic simplicity and comparatively low capital cost. Drawbacks of alkaline scrubbing are the tendency for accumulation of solids to plug the system, scaling, corrosion and erosion problems and the need to dispose of large quantities of waste. Discussed are instrumentation loop applications to a 90,000 cfm alkali scrubbing test facility, the process problems the instrumentation engineer faces in. selection of equipment, the performance of the instruments selected and the problems encountered during start-up. The Test Facility incorporates centralized electronic process control with a digital data acquisition system provided to log process variables and print off normal (alarm) conditions. Flue gas SO2 content is measured by ultra-violet analyzers and analysis of the total gas stream is by gas chromatographs.

Martin County Coal Corporation's operations are located on Wolf Creek in Martin County in the eastern part of Kentucky. The mining complex was started in 1971 and has grown to a 2.273 Mt/a steam coal operation. All of the production goes to Duke Power Company's Belews Creek electric generating station in North Carolina. Production comes from four seams that are mined by deep and surface mining methods. Surface mining accounts for 55% of the production and the remainder comes from 2 underground mines. Continuous miners are used exclusively underground. The preparation plant was originally designed to take coal at the rate of 907 Mt/h but that has gradually been increased to 1134 Mt/h. Other cleaning equipment includes Daniels DMS vessels, Model 77 Deister tables, 355.4-mm R. & S. Hydro- cyclones, Krebs 254-m classifying cyclones, Daniels froth cells and in 1980, 3 Krebs 508-mm heavy media cyclones were added to recover some lost and misplaced material. CMI centrifugaldryers and a Hey1 & Patterson size 100 thermal dryer are also part of the coal preparation equipment.

Resource figures for bentonite clays are generally based on stratigraphic, sedimentary geologic data and drilling and sampling. Estimates of bentonite resources and/or reserves commonly found in the literature report on bentonite occurrences in specific localities or areas but none on any documented comprehensive estimates of bentonite resources. From 1974 thru 1977 the Bureau of Land Management conducted extensive studies of the resources of commercial grade bentonite in the three state region. These investigations consisted of: 1. Stratigraphic and geologic sampling with supplemental drilling data, followed by geostatistical analysis. 2. Data compiled from a systematic search of county and state records on mining locations, leases and acreage filed for bentonite. Estimates of resources of commercial grade bentonite using industry parameters were calculated from these data sources. It is concluded that there exists from 1.5 to 2.4 billion tons of in-place bentonite in Wyoming, Montana and South Dakota. Assuming a 5 percent annual growth rate for the industry, this would indicate a life of 62 to 73 years.

Strip mining of coal, and to a lesser extent limestone, gravel and other mineral deposits in the Appalachian region of the eastern United States has left many large and small areas of devastated land where mining predated reclamation requirements. In Pennsylvania alone, there are between 250,000 and 370,000 acres of strip-mined land 1,2/. A higher percentage, and a greater total acreage of land in Pennsylvania is in need of some form of reclamation than any other state, with the neighboring states of Ohio and Nest Virginia also having nearly the same magnitude of mining.2/ Recent legislation governing strip mining of coal proposed royalties to cover reclamation of such presently unusable land. However, in Pennsylvania and other states some progress has already been realized by utilizing abandoned strip mines and gravel pits for waste disposal sites. Given acceptable hydrogeologic settings, such use of these mined areas for landfilling has provided the incentive for ultimately restoring unreclaimed land to beneficial use, at no cost to the general public.

Gallium (Ga) and Germanium (Ge) are essential strategic elements that are extensively used as semiconductors in many technological fields. Owing to their essential uses and supply disruption, Ga and Ge are deemed critical by the U.S. They are typically found as substitutions or inclusions in zinc minerals. However, their distributions within zinc minerals are not well understood. To address this, trace element and mineralogy analyses of representative samples obtained from an old high-zinc-grade tailing were performed using various qualitative and quantitative techniques. These techniques included Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Tescan Integrated Mineralogical Analysis (TIMA) with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Moreover, bench-scale froth flotation tests were conducted to enrich zinc minerals, the major hosts of Ga and Ge, using PAX as a collector, Na2S as a sulfidizer, Pb(NO3)2 as an activator, and MIBC as a frother. Comprehensive characterization analyses of the flotation products showed significant enrichment of Zn, Ga and Ge in the flotation concentrates.

"Mining plays a key role in the development of modern civilization as a source of essential raw materials and provider of essential fuels, producer of jobs and a factor in support of the international balance of monetary payment (Camm, 2014). Professionals in mining locate, develop, design and manage ore deposits in an environmentally safe and profitable manner. As mineral deposits become increasingly scarce, new challenges face the industry. A current trend is to an increased emphasis on underground mining techniques for deeper deposits. Operations are safer now than before as companies understand better their work environment and the importance of mining responsibly.A continual challenge for the industry is accurately reflecting the costs and selling price of ore. An enduring characteristic of mining is the situation where the market typically determines the price of a commodity; the main control a company has on the bottom line is to control the cost of production.An attempt to bring light and clarity to the cost of their business will give a better idea to investors on the true profitability of the mining business. Gold producers face this struggle to accurately reflect the cost of production while also seeking to attract the interest of the investment community (Hill, 2013). In order to have a consistent format to report on their production costs, leading gold producers, through their alliance inside the World Gold Council (WGC), worked on the adoption of a new cost framework: the all-in sustaining cost (AISC) and all-in cost (AIC).Since 1996, the traditional cash cost reporting has focused only on the mining and processing costs incurred in mining an ounce of gold, which included the costs of goods sold (labor, energy, and consumables costs) and royalties (Table 1). But cash cost reporting ignores many important aspects, like sustaining capital, general and administrative expenses and site rehabilitation at the end of the mine life (Whelan, 2013). The cash cost was used to attract many investors into the business. In fact, the high gross margin (sales minus cash costs) has been promoted in past decades by the industry instead of the net or operating margin. As a result, even when the gold price was high, nearly $61/g ($1,900/oz) in August 2011, gold producers were not reporting excessive profits in their cash flow/income statements, to the disappointment and incomprehension of investors (Milstead, 2014). The truth was simply that the other costs omitted in the traditional cash cost were reducing the apparent profits.The disconnect led to a need for more accurate cost reporting in order to win back investor confidence and provide better understanding of gold mining economics. In 2012, the senior gold mining companies, including Gold Fields, Barrick Gold Corp. and Newmont Mining Corp., worked with the WGC to develop a new measure. This resulted in the June 2013 publication of the new framework AISC and AIC, which has been widely embraced by the sector since Jan. 1, 2014 (WGC, 2013).The adoption of the new cost template would have the dilemma of showing the real profitability of gold mine properties, which might alleviate taxes from governments and legislators, but it might also scare off investors toward more lucrative industries if not winning back their confidence."

The Tennohji-Benten Giant Trunk Sewer Project has been under construction since 1974 in the eastern part of Osaka, the second largest city in Japan. The entire project is divided into 7 blocks, some of which have already been completed. This 8.8-km sewer tunnel, being driven through a densely populated area, was planned to be constructed by the shield tunneling method. This paper described shield tunneling performances and ground behaviors during the construction of Blocks 2 and 3. An earth pressure shield (dia., 6,750 mm) was employed in Block 3 tunneling. The ground was generally soft and the cover over the tunnel varied from 13 m to only 4.5 m, so that a considerable amount of chemicals was injected to stabilize the ground. A hand-digging type shield (dia., 7,250 mm) was used in Block 2 tunneling under compressed air. For 85 m of the total length of 1.6 km, the soil at the face was extremely soft, and therefore, the ground freezing method was additionally employed.

This paper presents research on the environmental impact of digging and loading equipment used in surface coal mining. Environmental impact was assessed through the measurement of equipment exhaust and dust emissions, and sound level. In this study, exhaust emission refers to carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Dust generation refers to fine particles (PM2.5), inhalable particles (PM10) and total suspended particulate matter (TSP). Sound level refers to the sound pressure level at different distances from the equipment. Modeling of the environmental impact of digging and loading equipment was conducted using the Microsoft Visual Studio.NET software package. This research was a part of a broader project involving the development of a software system for the selection of productive, cost-efficient and ecofriendly mining systems, sponsored by the Appalachian Research Initiatives for Environmental Sciences (ARIES). This research may assist mining professionals in quantifying the environmental impact of digging and loading equipment, and developing strategies for reducing the overall impact of such equipment in surface mining.

Based on resource studies in many developing countries, four categories of industrial clay resources are recognized as precursors to development strategies. Category I: High quality, high technology clays requiring major investment for large tonnage international markets. Category 2: Unique specialty clays requiring advanced technologies for small tonnage niche markets. Category 3: Lower technology, moderate quality clays, predominantly to supply local markets. Category 4: Low quality clays requiring little or no processing. Projects with Categories 1 and 2 clays require extended development times (green field to investment decisions) with significant pre-development investment, while projects with Categories 3 and 4 clays require shorter development timetables and lower levels of investment.

High Speed 2 (HS2) mandated that Building Information Modelling (BIM) processes be implemented during design and construction. Gall Zeidler Consultants (GZ) was responsible for developing the BIM Models for the portals, tunnels, and cross passages of the of the 16 km-long Chiltern twin-bore Tunnel. In addition, GZ developed the GBR for the Chiltern Tunnels and incorporated the relevant information into the Project’s BIM framework. This paper presents the implemented BIM framework, describes the modelling approach, and discusses the advantages and challenges of implementing BIM, particularly how BIM improved interface coordination and how BIM was used in feasibility assessments of different construction options.

Over the past several years, Newmont Gold Company (previously Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corporation) developed a new technology for the flotation of refractory auriferous sulfide minerals which is referred to as the N2TEC flotation process. Starting in April 1997, the first commercial flotation plant utilizing N2TEC technology was successfully commissioned at the Lone Tree Mine near Valmy, Nevada. The Lone Tree flotation plant was designed to process 4,085 mt/d of ore producing 494 mt/d of sulfide concentrate. A flotation tails leach CIP circuit was added to recover cyanide-soluble gold from the flotation tails. A portion of the flotation concentrate is blended with whole ore feed to the Lone Tree autoclave, up to the limit imposed by the current oxygen plant capacity. The remainder of the concentrate is shipped to either the Twin Creeks autoclaves or the Carlin roaster for subsequent oxidation and gold extraction. This paper discusses the results achieved in the commercial flotation plant compared to pilot plant testing and engineering design flotation modeling. Capital and operating cost information are also presented.

The selection of belt conveyor drive systems (*) is the subject of ongoing investigation. Frequently this choice has been governed by an incomplete perspective on the major considerations. A more comprehensive and objective approach is desirable. This paper presents additional factors which hopefully will broaden this perspective. BACKGROUND Conventional belt conveyors are powered by electric or electro-mechanical drives(*) mounted at the conveyor's head, tail, intermediate return span, or a combination of these (Fig. 1). A list of the drives reviewed is given in Table I. The following are main elements influencing the selection of the drive system: 1) dynamic characteristics, 2) economic factors such as capital cost, plant spares compatibility, reliability, availability, maintainability, and 3) environmental constraints. The principal dynamic characteristics of concern are the reactions of belt forces generated by the drive system during starting of the conveyor. Another attribute for consideration is the application of multiple driven pulleys used to 1) lower the conveyor's belt tension requirements, 2) increase the expected tonnage throughput, allowing for possible drive component failures, and 3) increase the plant spares flexibility related to the drive assembly.

INTRODUCTION Ambient concentrations of radon and its daughter products have been measured and analyzed by a number of investigators for a variety of purposes. Principal among these purposes have been: (1) descriptive, to characterize the distribution and changes in concentrations under various conditions; (2) research in the use of radon as a tracer gas in the study of atmospheric characteristics and motions, such as eddy mass transfer, diffusivity profiles, large scale circulations, and the like; and (3) the use of radon as an atmospheric tracer in exploration for uranium deposits.* This information forms the basic data for this paper and for its placing the ambient natural, or non-anthropogenic, radon concentrations into the perspective of ambient radon health standards and lung cancer risk calculations. To enable better understanding of some aspects of the ambient radon data, review and analysis is also performed on selected measurements of radon emanation or flux from the surface of the earth into the atmosphere. These measurements have generally been made for purposes similar to those for ambient radon, i.e., (1) description of radon emanation characteristics; or (2) to support and justify the use of ambient concentration measurements in atmospheric research; or (3) in exploration for uranium. Interest is also developing in the use of such measurements for earthquake prediction. In addition, to complete the perspective, brief examination is given to anthropogenic ambient and flux radon measurements related to the mining and milling of uranium, so that comparison can he made with the values from natural sources. As a frame of reference we cite here previous summaries of studies which have presented representative values and ranges of ambient concentrations and emanation rates. H. Israel, in the Compendium of Meterorology (1951), cites eight studies of ambient radon concentrations which we have selected as representative of non-anomalous continental values. Their means generally range from [0.06 to 0.15 pCi lit-1 with the smallest reported minimum of zero and the largest maximum 0.53 pCi lit-1. The overall mean is 0.10 with a standard deviation of 0.03 pCi lit-1. Means over oceans are much smaller, and the data scarcer, with only three values ranging from 0.0004 to 0.003 pCi lit-1 and a mean of 0.0016 pCi lit-1.] Thirteen studies from Israel's list were selected as representative of mountainous terrain. These data, except for the cases of higher elevations, frequently show significantly higher values than the average cases in non-mountainous terrain described-above. The averages range from 0.10 to 0.59 pCi lit-l; the smallest minimum is zero and the largest maximum is 9.2 pCi lit-1. The overall mean is 0.30 with a standard deviation of 0.17 pCi lit-1. Israel also cites five studies of radon emanation (flux) from the earth's surface. These show a mean of 0.40 pCi-2m-2 sec-1 and a range of from 0.21 to 0.74 pCi m-2 sec-1. Data on flux are naturally scarcer in the literature than data on ambient concentrations, because of the greater interest in and utility of the ambient information. In this paper we also give special consideration to observations of the variability in time and space of radon flux rates, and to the impact of these phenomena on the use of such data for a variety of purposes. NATURAL(NON-ANTHROPOGENIC)AMBIENT RADON CONCENTRATIONS We have examined the following reports for the data selected for this category; these studies were generally intended to describe radon characteristics in the atmosphere. Jonassen and Wilkening (1970); Bradley and Pearson (1970); Wilkening (1970); Lambert, et al (1970); Pearson and Moses (1966); and DickPeddie, et al (1974). Another set of studies which was reviewed was selected because the investigators made ambient radon measurements in the course of examining the use of radon as a tracer in atmospheric research. This set consists of: Israel and Horbert (1970); Carlson and Prospero (1972); Subramanian, et al (1977); Larson (1978); Cohen, et al (1972); Hosler (1966); and Shaffer and Cohen (1972). Finally, unpublished data from uranium exploration activities (Milly and Thayer, 1976) was analyzed. [Treating the ocean cases first, the mean values are generally consistent with those quoted earlier from Israel (0.0004 to 0.003 pCi lit-1); they range from 0.001 to 0.011 pCi lit-1, with 0.003 the most frequently reported value. Continental values, from eight studies, range in means from 0.07 to 0.41 pCi lit-1 (not including mineralized areas, or "uranium country", discussed later), with maxima as high as 2.4 pCi lit -l. For comparison, the means from Israel are 0.06 to 0.15 pCi lit-1, with a maximum of 0.53 pCi lit-1. On longwall coal faces in some Japanese coal mines more than half of the air coming from the intake gate road flows into the caved goaf and the air heated by the hot waste rocks in the goaf comes out through the latter half of the face. This still constitutes a major heat problem in spite of the introduction of gate and face air coolers. Therefore, in order to establish effective measures to improve the environ- mental conditions, it is essential to obtain information pertaining to the air flow pattern on the face as affected by the goaf conditions and the air flow regulating measures taken at the intake side of the face. Experiments for this purpose were carried out using a coal face model. The model was reduced to a scale of 1110th of the real face measuring 100 m long and 2.2 m high, equipped with self-advancing supports. The model design was also conceived to accomodate eventual modifications of the space of the caved goaf as imposed by the actual conditions.

This paper investigates the propagation, interaction and scattering of explosively generated seismic waves with discontinuities in rock masses using numerical models which employ a finite difference method. The models consider 2-D systems and give a full solution including mode-conversion in the mid-frequency scattering region where feature dimensions are of the order of the wavelengths involved. The paper has two parts, the first of which considers wave propagation and diffraction by simulating an explosive body source in a half- space containing a step or a slot on the surface which represent a cliff and a rift valley that has dimensions of the order of the wavelengths in the source. The second part of the paper reports a hybrid technique which combines a perturbation method and the finite difference method for wave propagation again caused by an explosive body source in a 2-D half-space system but with a shallow surface obstacle, such as a smooth ridge, with elastic constants slightly different from bulk material and the slope of this surface topography are shallow. This hybrid technique is also reported being applied to a half-space with a horizontal void or insert.

The carbon-in-pulp process for gold processing depends on the adsorption of dissolved Au(CN)2- from solution onto activated carbon. Our work shows that coconut and peat based carbons have the same mechanism and kinetics of adsorption. There is no contribution to the bonding from carbon-oxygen functionalities on the carbon surface, as has been invariably supposed in all previous theories for the mechanism of the reaction. It is shown that Au(CN)2- is reversibly adsorbed intact on, and parallel to, the graphitic planes of the carbon. The physiochemical basis of the measurement of carbon reactivity for gold adsorption is discussed.

This paper addresses the sharing of 2D and 3D data between GIS and mine planning software. Two-dimensional (2D) data, and now three-dimensional (3D) data as well, can be formatted such that both types of software can use, exchange, and display the same datasets. This increases the ability to share data between such groups as environmental, exploration, and mine planning. It overcomes shortcomings of mine planning software in areas of open database connectivity, spatial analysis, and data input and output. It also helps to overcome shortcomings of GIS software in the areas of geologic modeling, three-dimensional interpolation, and visualization.
