IN any assay office it is of paramount importance to keep the men interested in their work; and in order to do this, men on routine work, such as lead, zinc, and sulphur deterrrrinations, slag analysis, etc, should be changed around monthly. This gives some variety and helps to keep a man's interest on his work, so that better work results. It may be maintained that to keep a man on the same class of work indefinitely makes him more expert at his work. This is certainly true; but in assaying, where accuracy is so essential, it is absolutely necessary for a man to keep his mind on the work, and not 'get' into a mechanical method of working. He is also on the alert to discover means for shortening his analytical methods, and his capacity forwork is increased. Another advantage is that the men get a good all-round training, and one is never at a loss to replace a man on any class of work when he is absent from any cause. This tends to smoother and more efficient running of the assay department. In industrial assaying it is often advantageous to have a result quickly, so that it will be of maximum benefit in the running of some part of the plant, In such a case it pays to sacrifice a little accuracy to speed up a method. The shortest method is less costly, and a quick approximate method is all that is required to give the superintendent the requisite information. Time is thereby saved, and the cost is less. In carrying out assaying for any large industrial plant, such as a smelting works, there is always a tendency for superintendents running the different departments to send in more samples for assay than are absolutely necessary when no system of costing is in operation. Some of these samples may involve a lot of work and heavy expenditure, as, for example, the estimation of only one impurity in a sample of refined lead. The phrase "Total-Energy" has, during the past few years, become widely used to describe a wide range of very different operations. However, if accurately described they all have one basic factor in common - energy usage is optimised with the prime mover being powered by gas or oil to generate shaft horsepower and the products of combustion being put to some use. The item which distinguishes a Total Energy system from any other engine or turbine driven project is that orate pains are taken to utilize the waste heat, whether this be in the form of exhaust gases and/or engine jacket ling water. n areas where grid supplies of electricity are readily available, the economics of most projects undoubtedly hinge upon the successful application of waste heat. However, there has been a growing awareness of other benefits, such as reliability of supply, which can be incorporated into the system. In particular these factors sway managements of hospitals and companies with complex computer facilities to examine closely the feasibility of Total Energy, Consequently, in America for example, where many systems have proved themselves the list of applications is wide - shopping centres, apartment blocks, office buildings, airline terminals, universities, schools, motels. And these do not cover the industrial sectors where the range is wider. The total number in North America is now approximately 500 and this to some extent-speaks for itself. In Australia, the real work involved in carrying out feasibility studies for Total Energy is only just beginning. 'in some quarters, the concept is not well received in that it is too new. Therefore, a typical approach is to play safe and wait until some other company has proved its operation "under Australian conditions". This is certainly a realistic approach when considering something revolutionary but as far as Total Energy.is"concerned all the individual components and sometimes combinations, (engines, generators, boilers, air-conditioning units) have been in operation for many years. The only innovation is that they are now all being brought together under one roof. This should not be forgotten when the question "where can I see something like this operating?" is asked.

Australia as a leading producer of mineral sands has also occupied a leading position in many areas of research'in the processing and applications of these minerals. Research in upgrading ilmenite to produce synthetic rutile has resulted in the develop- ment of many processes, e.g,., Becher, Murso, Chlorine Technology, and ICI processes. Studies on the reducibility of ilmenites, aqueous leaching of reduced ilmenites, Fe-Ti-O system, leachability of natural and treated ilmenites in hydrochloric acid and selective chlorination of iron from ilmenites have been carried out in order to develop and improve the efficiency of the above processes. While research on the processing of zircon sand to produce high purity (99.99% ZrO2 zirconia powder and zirconium chemicals started only recently, research by CSIRO in the early 1970s led to the discovery of the phenomenon of transformation toughening in partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) ceramics. Australia, with very significant resources of lanthanide-containing ores, pro- duces substantial quantities of monazite each year but research in processing and appli- cations of rare earths was neglected in recent years in this country. However, research to improve processes for the recovery of rare earths is now under way and studies on the production and testing of Nd-B-Fe magnets which are 1.5-2 times stronger than the strongest magnets (Sm-Co) currently available, have also commenced.' An overview of the research in the pro- cessing and applications of mineral sands during the last two decades in Australia and its implications for the industry are pre- sented in the paper.

The shape and particle size distribution of caved ore mass in sublevel caving were investigated in this study. The paper first reviews the main factors affecting the shape and characteristic of caved ore mass in sublevel caving and then through the experimental blast testing with cement-sand concrete models, the shape and particle size distribution of caved ore mass were found out. The experimental results indicated that the shape and particle size distribution of caved ore mass was similar to that of the drawn loose body. This finding presented a new perspective for the future study on the ore drawing theory and on the optimisation of structural parameters of sublevel caving. The structural parameters must meet the principle that the shape of the drawn body is in consistency to the shape of caved ore mass.

Chalcopyrite samples from two different localities were leached in oxygenated mixed chloride-sulphate lixivants at elevated temperatures and atmospheric pressure. The oxidation of chalcopyrite was found to follow predominantly linear kinetics. The slope of the major region was dependent on stirring rate, oxygen flowrate and chloride concentration while only slightly dependent on the surface area of the sample leached. This region was found to predominate only at low temperatures. The oxidised chalcopyrite releases cuprous and ferric ions into solutions. Chloride ions complex these dissolved ions to effectively move the equilibrium of the leaching reaction to the right. When the level of chloride in solution was below 6 g/l, the unstable cuprous ions were found to reprecipitate with sulphur as covellite. When no chloride was present and the lixivant was a solution of sulphuric acid then ferric sulphates precipitated. The overall leaching reaction occurring in the leaching system is: CuFeS2 + 5H+ + 1.25 02 = Cu 2+ + Fe 3+ + 2S¦ + 2.5H20

The risk and consequences of community rejection and loss of a social licence to operate is well articulated (Moffat et al 2018), however, the means for systematically managing this risk are less established. At the local scale, a mining operation is said to have a social licence to operate (SLO) when it achieves ongoing acceptance or approval from the local community and other stakeholders who can affect its profitability (Graafland, 2002). Without this social acceptance, it is very difficult for a business to operate effectively or profitably. It is well understood that social (or community) acceptance of a mine and its associated operations is a reflection of the quality of the relationship a company has with their host community (Thomson & Boutilier, 2011; Lacey & Lamont, 2014; Parsons et al., 2014; Moffat et al., 2015). Community relations are an integral part of successful mining operations and where these interactions are effective, they tend to foster mutual understanding, trust and support between a company and the host community (Kemp et al., 2006; Holley & Mitcham, 2016). Research further demonstrates that where such interactions are perceived to be procedurally fair, the increased trust created in these company-community interactions tends to lead to higher levels of acceptance of mining operations (Moffat & Zhang, 2014; Lacey et al., 2017).The challenge, however, is how to listen systematically to communities that mining and associated operations; communities that are often located across vast geographic areas and with diverse demographics. To date, traditional methods deployed to both guide and evaluate community engagement and social investment activities have been challenged to reflect the nature of the phenomenon they seek to observe, the voice of community. For example, detailed baseline surveys of community attitudes every three years by companies, as is the requirement within the policy frameworks of most large miners, provide rich insights but do not reflect the dynamic, temporal nature of the relationships that underpins their SLO. These processes typically are largely opaque to communities and distinct from the company’s engagement activities. The CSIRO Local Voices project was developed with Rio Tinto to go some way towards meeting this challenge of how to listen to the voice of community systematically. In the recent past there have been dramatic advancements in the development of remote sensing platforms (satellite, aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles – UAVs) as well as sensor systems (multispectral, hyperspectral, thermal, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and radar). However, selection of the appropriate remote sensing technique for a mining application is complex and requires scrutiny on multiple scales including spatial, temporal and imaging capabilities. Cyanide is a significant cost in gold processing, as well as an environmentally sensitive issue. It has been suggested that precipitation of cyanide from leach liquors as copper-iron-cyanide compounds such as Cu2Fe(CN)6 may account for part of the total cyanide consumption. This may be especially true for ores that are rich in both copper and iron minerals. Ammonia addition has been shown to decrease the cyanide consumption by copper. Cu2Fe(CN)6.xNH3 precipitates have also been postulated to form during conventional cyanide detoxification processes, using oxidants such as SO2/air, with ammonia arising as a breakdown product from the oxidation of free cyanide. The present work has examined the conditions under which such precipitates may form, particularly in gold plant process and detoxification liquors. Ammonia and pH were found to have a large effect on the extent of precipitation. The compounds that were formed were found to comprise mainly Cu2Fe(CN)6.7H2O, as well as a range of NH3-bearing variants. The stabilities of the various precipitates are important from an environmental perspective. The long-term stability of copper ferrocyanide precipitates in tailings dams may be a problem under alkaline conditions and when some free cyanide is present, elevating the measured total cyanide in solution significantly. Case studies including data from actual plants are also considered, and the importance of these effects is reaffirmed from these results.

Two blasthole density logging programmes have been conducted on the Mt Whaleback iron ore mine to evaluate the use of this type of logging as an aid to blast pattern design. The first programme also involved the setting up of a Density Test facility with which to calibrate the density probe. The programmes indicated that about 22-23 blastholes can be consistently logged per day at a cost of $1.30 per metre. Even though this is only half the rate required to log the average number of blastholes drilled daily on Mt Whaleback, testwork indicated that no significant loss of accuracy results if only half the holes in a pattern are logged. The major results of the programmes were: 1. The density range for black pyritic Shale is 2.2-2,9 g/cc. 2. The density range for soft to medium hard BIF is 2.1-3.0 g/cc. 3. The density range for hard BIF is 3.0-3.6 g/cc. 4. The front row blastholes show consistently lower densities than the main body holes due to blast damage. 5. A low density zone extending to a maximum depth of 6 m occurs at the top of most blastholes and results from blast damage from the bench above. In the last several years we have seen the demise of the Department of Mining and Metallurgy at the University of Melbourne, the removal of extraction metallurgy from the Department of Metallurgy and incorporation of it within a School of Mines at the University of New South Wales, and the joining of a small Department of Metallurgy with a Department of Chemical Engineering to form a Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Newcastle. Most of these changes have been forced by the logical application of the principles of accounting, the currency for such accounting being the Whole Student Unit (WSU). It is not my intent to address the problem of attracting young people into courses in metallurgy (including extraction metallurgy) which, at present, is the only way to introduce black ink into the WSU accounting ledger. Rather, I wish to express my disquiet over the trends, illustrated by some of the above occurrences, of separating out extractive metallurgy from METALLURGY by suggesting in broad terms how a course in metallurgy should be structured. I firmly believe that the mechanical metallurgist and materials engineer need an exposure to chemical and extractive metallurgy; similarly, the extractive and process metallurgist should, in my view, have a good grounding in the interrelationships between composition, structure, and properties, this topic being the core of the basic subject physical metallurgy.

Most of the known in-place reserves of oil sands are found in Canada. These oil sands ores are mined using various processes to extract bitumen. The by-product slurry resulting from the extraction process, known as tailings, is discharged into tailings ponds. Fine kaolin clays are an important ingredient of the tailings because they remain suspended in water for many years. Current polymeric flocculation/dewatering technologies use acrylamide-based polymers such as polyacrylamide (PAM), but sediments produced using PAM-based flocculants hold considerable amounts of water due to the formation of loosely-packed flocs. Anionic polymers are better flocculants due to bridging and the charge-neutralisation mechanism. In this paper, we will compare the synthesis of two flocculants: thermosensitive, anionic flocculants and thermosensitive, hydrophobically modified anionic flocculants. The first flocculant is a copolymer of acrylic acid (AA) and N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM), in which AA is the anionic monomer. The second flocculant is a copolymer of NIPAM, AA and the hydrophobic monomer N-tert-butyl acrylamide. We evaluated the dewatering efficiency of 2 wt per cent kaolin using both flocculants by comparing settling rates at different flocculant dosages, charge neutralisation ability and supernatant clarity. To better understand floc formation, we measured the floc size formed by both flocculants at different flocculant dosages. In recent times many groups have indicated that they would like ore reserve estimation to be numeric and objective. The use of spectral data has traditionally been for obtaining mineral information and for mapping out alteration systems. The output from these data is typically in the form of mineral assemblages and data on relative proportions of minerals. However there is much more than just mineral information in the spectral data. Most importantly, the data allow the user to obtain vital information on mineral chemistry for some key alteration minerals. The mineral chemistry data allow the users to evaluate multiple phases of alteration of the same key mineral species, and to assess which phase is related to mineralisation. Mineral indices can be extracted from the spectral data and plotted to represent variations in the chemistry and relative proportions of key mineral phases as downhole, section and three-dimensional (3D) plots. These data can also be compared with the spatial distribution of the mineralisation by integration with geochemical and logging data. Through spatial and statistical evaluation the mineral information obtained using spectral analysis can provide vital information to assist in building alteration models and therefore improve targeting for further drilling and exploration.

The process and control technologies incorporated into the coal preparation plant at Newlands were to be used for the first time in Australia. The commissioning organisation and procedures were set up on the basis that commissioning personnel, while being competent, would be unfamiliar with the equipment. In addition the commissioning process would have to be completed quickly. The organisation coped with all of these problems and more.

Electro-Slag Remelting (ESR) is a process capable of producing ingots with much lower centre-line segregation and better internal soundness than conventional ingot casting processes, as well as lower inclusion and sulfur concentrations. This process is commonly used for alloyed steels intended for critical applications like components of marine turbines, supercritical powerplants and rocket motor casings. It involves melting a metal electrode using electrical resistive heating in a slag pool and re-solidification of the resulting metal droplets beneath the slag layer, forming an ingot. Conventional ESR fluxes consist primarily of CaF2, Al2O3 and CaO, along with minor concentrations of SiO2, MgO etc. The emission of fluoride vapour from the molten slag causes several environmental and health problems, triggering a need to develop and reduce the fluoride content in the ESR flux. The present study aims to develop low-CaF2 alternatives to commercial ESR fluxes without compromising on productivity and the surface quality of the refined ingot. Thus, the modification in chemical composition needs to satisfy properties like electrical resistivity, viscosity and liquidus temperature, essential for efficient ESR operation. Since electrical resistivity and viscosity are highly dependent on the ionic structure of the molten slag, it is important to understand the effect of compositional modification on the structure of the flux. The present study employs Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy to investigate the structural variations in the modified fluxes, especially the effect of changing SiO2 concentration, in comparison with conventional CaF2-rich fluxes. Additionally, thermal analysis (Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)) has been carried out to characterise the melting behaviour of the fluxes. The findings are compared with simulations carried out using the FactSage™ software, ver 8.3 (GTT Technologies, Aachen, Germany). Simultaneous analysis of liquidus temperature and the structure is expected to help in identifying the practical suitability of modified ESR flux compositions for industrial implementation.

The broad biodiversity of our country is manifested through several different biological forms. From the villages of Portovelo and San Gerardo in the southern part of Ecuador, some samples of water and rocks were taken in order to identify the native micro-organisms which take part in the natural processes of leaching of sulfurous minerals. The presence of Spp Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was determined together with a fungi sample which has not yet been characterised by the current workers. These have been isolated, grown, experimented and conserved in appropriate cryogenic environments. The present research intends to study the individual and group adaptation of the bacteria and the fungi upon suitable systems of agitation and ventilation, in combination with several different concentrations of refractory auriferous samples. These refractory samples were derived from old mine workings and the experiments were performed to test the effectiveness of the isolated species in bioleaching as pre-treatments upon the cyaniding processes. The capability of these bacteria to develop in environments with high concentrations of cyanide has also been studied, to investigate the possible use of bacteria in the biodegradation of cyanide. The presence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in acid conditions has already been tested in advance, however, the presence of fungi species in these conditions are studied to prove their efficiency as another alternative for the bioleaching of refractory auriferous minerals and Baptista, 1998).
