The increase in productivity which has been achieved in mining during the past two decades has been attained largely through the replacement of manpower with electrical power. Power demands should continue to increase, requiring electrical distribution systems to be well planned to avoid inadequate voltage levels caused by underdesign and excessive costs resulting from overdesign. To aid the mining electrical engineer in designing proposed power systems or analyzing changes to existing systems, a digital computer program has been developed. This program will analyze alternating or direct-current networks with up to 10 voltage sources, 75 loads and 300 total segments. A maximum of nine levels of voltage is permitted in the system. This project was part of a package of programs developed at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (WI) for the mining industry under sponsorship of the Office of Coal Research. Included in this package are also programs to: 1. Schedule mine production and predict cost of mining 2. Simulate rail haulage systems 3. Simulate belt haulage systems 4. Analyze ventilation networks 5. Analyze pumping networks These programs are available from the Department of Mining Engineering, VPI, Blacksburg, Virginia 24061 for a nominal processing cost.

The Pocahontas Coal Field consists of eight mineable seams of low-volatile coal in southern West Virginia and Virginia. The deeper seams, especially the Pocahontas No. 3 and No.4 Seams, under heavy cover and below drainage are notoriously gassy. Methane in the Pocahontas Field is generally thought of as being confined in the coal itself, rather than in mud slips or clay veins. Furthermore, it is characteristic of Pocahontas coal to retain its gas until the coal is broken and removed from the solid. Because of this inability for gas to escape from unmined coal, entries developed around large blocks are seldom of significant value in bleeding off methane before pillar extraction begins. This is evidenced by the fact that it is not uncommon to find gas liberated during the mining of chain pillars and barriers which have been developed for several years. The Pocahontas Fuel Company develops almost all solid coal by conventional methods with shuttle car haulage. To provide the maximum productive capacity without compromising ventilation and safety requirements, the Company has adopted standards for ventilating 5, 6 and 7-entry sections.

The practice of dust abatement or control is not new to any operation of United States Steel Corporation. This report will review those activities, past and present, within the five operating districts of United States Steel-Coal Operations with specific reference to mechanical and continuous mining, and including both the health and safety aspects of the problem. Obviously, the first principle of dust control is to inhibit its formation If this is not practical, steps may be taken to prevent its becoming airborne. Airborne dust control can be realized by either collecting it at the point of generation, diluting it with large volumes of air to reduce concentration, settling it by various means, or with reference to ignition hazard only, render it incombustible by neutralization with an inert material. These basic principles have been verified by the work of many, including the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of Interior, Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., and the Mining Research Establishment of the National Coal Board of Great Britain. Their application to every day mining problems is best illustrated by the following examples.

A computer model capable of simulating the basic production system in a variety of underground mining methods has been developed at the Twin Cities Mining Research Center. This Bureau of Mines paper describes the simulation of the basic production system at the working face, which includes drilling, blasting, mucking, and roof bolting. The model is event-oriented; that is, the status of the system is updated at the occurrence of an event. All event or activity times, including failure and repair of equipment, are treated as stochastic variables. A location dimension, in addition to the time dimension, is used, allowing the simulation of multiple location systems. To aid the user in determining the efficiency of his system, the model provides several reports. An event or activity report gives the frequency of occurrence total active time, and cumulative delay statistics for each event. An equipment report delineates the availability and utilization of all equipment. A production report provides information on various performance measures such as tons produced and holes drilled. The cost report gives the cost of various elements in the system. Operating data from an actual mining situation were used in validating the model. In addition to the description of the model, examples of simulation experiments which were performed on a room-and-pillar mine system are given. Use of the model to determine methods for improving the efficiency of the system is discussed.

"It was possible to beneficiate a low-grade iron ore fines sample from Bellary-Hospet, Karnataka, India assaying 56% Fe, 9.1% SiO2 and 5.2% Al2O3 and produce two concentrates, namely, a sinter-grade fines concentrate (43.7% by weight), assaying 63.6% Fe, 2.6% SiO2 and 1.7% Al2O3, and a pellet-grade concentrate (30.7% by weight) assaying 64.7% Fe, 2.9% SiO2 and 1.7%Al2O3. Rejects (25.6% by weight) assayed 32.5% Fe, 27.9% SiO2 and 15.4% Al2O3. The mineralogical characterization indicated that the sample consisted of 69.5% ironbearing minerals (56% hematite, 7.5% martite and 6% goethite-limonite), 12.5% quartz and 15.2% clay, and the rest were minor minerals. Liberation size was found to be in the size range of 25 to 100 µm. The process flow sheet consists of jigs, spirals, grinding and low- and high-intensity magnetic separation of the deslimed feed. IntroductionJSW Steel Ltd is a 10-Mt/a integrated steel plant. To produce 10 Mt/a hot metal requires nearly 16 to 20 Mt/a iron ore fines. The fast depletion of highgrade iron ore fines, increased industrial demand and an increase in iron ore prices have necessitated the exploitation and use of low-grade iron ore fines in the steel-making process after beneficiation. Thus, the beneficiation of low-grade iron ores by removing the associated gangue minerals and enhancing their grade is essential. The use of these iron ore fines in sinter and pellet making has prompted the undertaking of systematic studies on low-grade iron ores.Finely disseminated low-grade iron ores with siliceous impurities have been upgraded by gravity, magnetic and flotation-based processes (Burt, 1994; Svoboda, 1987; Houot, 1983). The processing of low-grade Indian hematite ore containing high levels of alumina-bearing minerals as impurities present separation challenges and pose special problems in martite and magnetite, in association with quartz and clay as the gangue-forming minerals. Alumina is mainly contributed by clay (kaolinite, montmorillonite, illite, alunite), lateritic material and gibbsite; some alumina occurs as solids in iron oxide minerals, namely, goethite and limonite. The Bagdad solvent extraction plant was commissioned in 1969 and was the second solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) operation to be built following the Ranchers Bluebird SX-EW plant near Miami, AZ. The current operation still resembles its original form, with four independent sections that run in parallel with each consisting of many long and narrow settlers. Through its 40-year history, the Bagdad SX circuit has experienced a range of pregnant leach solution flows and grades. The unique design of the Bagdad circuit has allowed for numerous configuration changes to accommodate the changing operational conditions, while maintaining an extraction recognized in the industry as excellent.

The 1.8 million tonne Itos tailings deposit is the result of sever­al years of processing by Comibol of the San Jose and ltos Mine ores at Oruro Bolivia. The historic flowsheet consisted of a flotation circuit in which silver-bearing galena and stibnite were concentrated. Approximately half the silver in the ore was not recovered, and the existing tailings contain slightly over 200 grams silver per tonne, in the form of complex sulfides of silver, antimony, lead, and other metals coating grains of pyrite. An extensive laboratory program was conducted to exam­ine conventional processing l)lethods such as cyanide leaching and regrinding followed by flotation. However, the silver-bear­ing sulfides are in intimate contact with the pyrite and the pyrite comprises 30% of the total tailings weight. Cyanide leaching recovers only 40% of the silver and the cyanide consumption is uneconomically high. Flotation produces an upgraded, but still uneconomic, concentrate. For this reason, chloride leaching had been evaluated by Comibol, and in the mid 1980's Comibol undertook an innova­tive test consisting of two 300 tonne field heap leaches using a cold chloride solution. The tests were partially successful, but could not be applied to the bulk of the tailings which are already ground to 50% minus 200 mesh. In 1992, Kappes, Cassiday & Associates undertook to develop a hot agitated chloride leach flowsheet, and is current­ly constructing a treatment plant under a turnkey contract from a Bolivian company, Baremsa, S.A. Using this process, 85% of the remaining silver can be recovered, with significant by-prod­uct credits from antimony and lead. The project features hot, agitated acidic chloride leaching, filtration, crystallization of lead chloride, and precipitation of metals using iron scrap. Arsenic is removed from the precipitate by caustic leaching, and minor metals by furnace refining. Antimony is recovered as the oxide by cupelation, and silver is poured as <lore from the cupel. Production rate will be 600 tonnes per day. Startup is scheduled for late 1995.

The Port of Conneaut, long regarded as a leader in advanced bulk material handling technology, recently incorporated into its existing facility a new, multi-million dollar coal transfer-storage system. While the basic principles of conveyorized bulk material handling remain unchanged in the new system, design modifications such as rotary dumping of railroad cars, automated car feed to dumper, belt rip detection for conveyor belting, bucket wheel continuous production, and other innovations make The Pittsburgh and Conneaut Dock Company&apos;s complex worthy of classification as the "Port of Tomorrow - Today". The Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Company, the "Port of Tomorrow - Today", 1s a bulk materials storage and transfer facility located on Lake Erie, 68 miles east of Cleveland, 30 miles west of Erie, PA., and 138 miles north of Pittsburgh. Figure 1 shows an aerial view of the facility. It is designed to handle over 25 million tons per year of metallurgical and steam coals, direct shipping ore, fine ores, concentrates, pellets, limestone, and dolomite. Inbound shipments of iron ore and limestone are received from Minnesota, Michigan, Labrador, and Quebec. Coal arrives from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland. Rail service is provided by the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad Company.

"This article will share my ‘shift in career direction’ journey from corporate mine engineer, with 31 years of mining various commodities with a wide range of responsibilities in a variety of countries, to the world of academia. There are times in one’s career that a change is required, albeit perhaps not as drastic of a change as moving to teaching. This paper will share how the transition arose, the decision to make the change, the challenges of the first year in academia and the journey within academia going into the second year.As a graduate of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology (Montana Tech) with a B.S. mining engineering degree in May of 1982, my first job with Utah International in the Farmington, NM area took me back to my home state of New Mexico. Some of you will remember that the early 1980s was not a period of prolific opportunities for mining engineers, given low commodity prices, especially for copper (for example, Anaconda Co. had been taken over by Arco and was in the midst of closing down its Butte operations). Coal was good and the learning opportunities abounded with Utah (which became BHP and then BHP Billiton).Gold was taking off in the mid to late 1980s thanks to use of cyanide and heap leaching technology improvements, coupled with deregulation of the gold price, so I ventured off to work in the gold industry with a (then) junior Canadian company called Barrick at a new acquisition of theirs known as Goldstrike. That same gold surge was causing a shortage of iron ore mining engineers in Australia. So after a few years in Nevada, I uprooted the family and left for a little town in the Pilbara of West Australia, known as Newman, to work in the iron ore industry with BHP Iron Ore. An initial short overseas posting turned into six plus years before transferring to BHP’s Indonesian steam coal mines in Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. BHP was going through a rough period following some ill-fated projects (Magma Copper purchase, Beanup and HBI) and was reviewing assets and staffing, so internal opportunities became scarce. Employees were encouraged to “leave the company and find work elsewhere.” So, off I went to Argentina to try copper mining in the Andes with Minera Alumbrera. This short stint in South America was followed by a move to another mining town, Morenci, AZ, and a posting with Phelps Dodge (now Freeport- McMoRan). After 12-plus years without living close to snow, we moved to the Denver, CO area in a new position with Newmont Mining Corp. Along the way I became a professional engineer (Nevada) and completed a masters in project engineering and management. After 11 years with Newmont, I moved to Butte, MT where I accepted a position as assistant professor of mining engineering."

"Premature and unplanned mine closure can result in significant adverse impacts on the environment and community and need to be managed appropriately. Risk management techniques can reduce the negative impacts and risks of early mine closure. Risk Assessment 3D Model, is an efficient tool to quantify risk. The aim of this paper is to identify the mine closure risks in Choghart iron ore mine, and calculate the overall mine closure risk level. The result shows that 51.4% of assessed risks have low risk level and the overall risk level of early mine closure is low. Keywords: mine closure, risk assessment 3D model, Choghart iron ore mine INTRODUCTION The modern mining life-cycle can be divided into three main stages; exploration, mining (opening and production) and post mining (mine closure, and reclamation). Mine closure is the critical component of the modern mining life-cycle and it refers to the period of time when the operational stage of a mine has permanently ceases (Heikkinen et al, 2008). Planned closure occurs due to the depletion of ore reserves, but sometimes it is premature. Laurance (2006) shows that only 25% of mine closure in the past 30 years was due to resource depletion and in 75% of the cases the mines were closed for the other reasons. Ghanbari et al (2010) demonstrated that 48.6 % of copper mine closure in the past 100 years was due to resource depletion and 51.4 % of copper mines have been closed due to other reasons. The main reasons of premature mine closure are as follow (Laurance, 2006; Ghanbari et al, 2010; Maiti, 2013): • Economic, (low commodity prices or high costs) • Geological, (over-estimation of grade and tonnage) • Geotechnical (adverse geotechnical conditions) • Technical (equipment failure) • Regulatory, due to safety or environmental breaches • Social or community pressures • Closure of downstream industry or markets • Flooding or inrush Minaei Mobtaker and Osanloo (2013) developed a mine closure prediction model based on the data collected from closed iron ore mines in the past 100 years. They showed that economic factors, exhaustion of ore reserve and geological conditions are the main reasons of iron ore mine closure. They treated mine closure as a decision making problem in order to predict the causes of mine closure, including the uncertainties of some mine plan parameter such as iron ore price, production and consumption."

Clinoptilolite zeolite may offer attractive, cost-effective alternatives for remedial cleanup of old minesites, smelters and other sites with heavy metal contamination. Previous research demonstrates the relatively strong affinity of clinoptilolite for numerous metals and clinoptilolite displays a particularly strong affinity for lead (Loizidou and Townsend, 1987), one of the most toxic and problematic heavy metals. Since clinoptilolite can also selectively absorb some radionuclides and organic compounds, it may offer practical solutions to a wide variety of environmental problems.

A synthetic fiber manufactured by one chemical company has been treated by another chemical company to produce a cloth fabric capable of performing ion-exchange functions. Only a few delimiting parameters have been established. This paper will discuss briefly the highlights of a functioning ion-exchange cloth. The separation of dolomite from phosphate is the most challenging problem in phosphate mineral processing. More than 50 percent of the phosphate reserve in Florida contains too much dolomite to process using current industry practice. The current way of producing phosphoric acid requires less than one percent MgO in the phosphate concentrate as the feed material. The Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research (FIPR) Institute has collaborated with worldwide experts in the field to address this issue. As a result, the industry is now offered three feasible options. Option I entails three methods for reducing MgO content in the concentrate from the Crago process, including adding a dolomite depressant in the rougher flotation step, dolomite flotation of the cleaner concentrate, and scrubbing the cleaner concentrate in quartz sand, which could reduce MgO content in the final concentrate by 20 to 40 percent. Option II involves the crushing and grinding of high-dolomite phosphate pebbles followed by dolomite flotation at slightly acidic pH using a new collector that does not require phosphoric acid as a phosphate depressant, achieving a final concentrate analyzing less than 0.9 percent MgO at about 87 percent P2O5 recovery. Option III is a gravity separation technique using an innovative separation jig, and its full potential remains to be demonstrated.

Communication about the energy problem has come at us in great profusion during the last couple of years--reports, speeches, editorials, advertisements--and events. Events such as the Arab embargo on oil exports which vividly demonstrated the world&apos;s dependence on oil, a finite and nonrenewable resource. And the three-fold increase in the price of oil which provides a constant reminder of the political and economic implications of dependence on foreign oil. A distinction among countries exists today which was almost inconsequential two years ago--the oil exporting nations and the oil consuming nations. The only rational way for the consuming countries to lessen the political and economic clout of the OPEC group is to reduce their dependence on oil. The United States is capable of playing a significant part in such a move for several reasons.

A practical method is described for determining or checking whether underground supports such as props, posts and mechanized longwall supports have bearing areas of proper size in relation to the type of ground or floor strata on which they are standing, It is felt that this information provides an approach to eliminate, as much as possible, a potential grave source of error during the selection of roof supports. This would also affect the choice of costly mechanized longwall equipment where it is possible that the size of the bearing area is not as carefully determined as, for instance, the design strength of structural components.

An in situ leaching geochemical simulator consisting of flow, mass transport, and graphics support programs has been developed. Two dimensional flow in heterogeneous porous media is modeled using a semi-analytic boundary integral technique. This method involves mapping streamlines to straight line segments in the complex potential plane. Leachant concentration and mineral values are modeled in this plane using the (one dimensional) potential coordinates. A fully implicit finite difference scheme is used to solve the resulting coupled system of four concentration equations. Graphical representations of streamline patterns, concentration histories, profiles and recovery curves are generated. An application of the model to uranium leaching in a heterogeneous aquifer and ore zone setting is presented.

Computerized Preventive Maintenance is important in maintaining consistent and efficient operation in any industry utilizing sophisticated and expensive equipment on a continuous basis. At today&apos;s large bulk materials handling facilities, the problems of continuous operation of complex machines with their thousands of components exposed to abrasion, dirt, dust and the elements, are intensified and multiplied. Effective preventive maintenance can increase profits. Yet, the number of tasks to be performed is so staggering that it is beyond error-free human capacity. The computer must be an essential ele¬ment in any efficient and economical preventive maintenance system. Computerized preventive maintenance techniques have been successfully used in many fields, usually involving highly skilled and specialized personnel working under favorable and controlled conditions. Now, The Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Company has developed and is applying a computerized preventive maintenance system that is applicable to the bulk materials handling industry. The "system" has taken many years of intensive effort to develop and has been time-tested and proven during the past years on equipment handling materials with rugged physical characteristics and corrosive and abrasive qualities, under some of the most adverse weather conditions on the Great Lakes.

During in situ uranium mining using ammonium bicarbonate lixiviant, the ammonium exchanges with cations on the ore&apos;s clay. Mter mining is complete, the ammonium may desorb into post-leach ground water. For the particular ore studied, other chemicals (i.e., uranium and selenium) which are mobilized during the leach process, have also been found in the post-leach ground water. Laboratory column tests, used to simulate the leaching process, have shown that aluminum chloride can rapidly remove ammonium from the ore and thus greatly reduce the subsequent ammonium leakage level into ground water. The aluminum chloride has also been found to reduce the leakage levels of uranium and selenium. In addition, the aluminum chloride treatment produces a rapid improvement in permeability.

In 1971, during the planning and design stages of a $300 million expansion, the Iron Ore Company of Canada Ltd. through its Engineers, Canadian Bechtel Ltd., came out with a preliminary request for two (2) 10,000 LTPH belt conveyor scale systems. These Systems were to provide weighing accuracies within 2.5% of the iron ore pellets and concentrates in transit on two (2) 72" wide conveyors from the stockpiles to the ships. Each conveyor system would be fed by a rail mounted bucket wheel reclaimer, with the conveyed material moving directly to the ship loaders with no inter- mediate surge and/or storage bins between the stockpiles and the ships. The bucket wheel reclaimer discharge rates would vary from 0-9600 LTPH in cyclic periods, with the periods varying from 1-5 minutes - dependent on the level of the reclaim buckets in relation to the stockpile as well as the slewing rate of the reclaimer. There would be frequent interruptions for bucket wheel repositioning (laterally and vertically), changing ship holds, and trimming ship holds. These frequent zero flow conditions, approximately 500 per 150,000 ton ship, could last 1-5 minutes. In addition, the conveyors on which the scales were to be mounted would be over the water and subject to the wind and cold of Northern Quebec. These Systems would be in use 350 working days of the year and would load 30,000,000 LT/yr. (An average of 90,000/working day).

Most bituminous coal mined near Eastern industrial areas requiring high Btu pipeline gas is caking and therefore unsuitable for fixed-bed pressure gasification by present techniques. If the caking property of such coal can be destroyed the resulting fuel can be gasified in a fixed bed at pressure with steam and oxygen as a preliminary step in making a high-Btu gas. To find a practical way to convert strongly caking coals of granular or small lump size to noncaking fuel was the object of this study. In previous work strongly caking coals of 1/8- to 1-1/2-inch size was converted to a noncaking coal char by treatment in a static bed in about 3 hours [1/]and coal of 18-100 Tyler mesh in a fluidized bed in about 5 minutes.[2/] An inert gas such as `steam, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, or a mixture of all three with a small amount of oxygen was used in both studies. In our work a strongly caking bituminous coal from the Pittsburgh seam of 4-8 Tyler mesh size was converted to a-noncaking form in free-fall in about 2 seconds by dropping it through a countercurrent flow of steam containing 4 to 7 percent oxygen at 1,150°-1,200° F and 300 psig. This method should also be applicable to smaller-sized material.
