"Microseismic monitoring provides insight into the location and extent of rock-mass fracturing induced by cave mining, enabling interpretation of the cave profile and validation of predictive numerical models. Source location uncertainties can lead to misinterpretation of the inferred characteristics of the fracture network. One principal source of uncertainty is the velocity model used to invert the location algorithm. Large-scale 3D numerical models of modulus changes across a caved mass can represent such complexities in the location algorithms, allowing more accurate interpretation of the microseismic activity. A Northparkes mine case study applies this advanced approach to microseismic data interpretation.RÉSUMÉ Le suivi microsismique fournit des renseignements sur la localisation et l’étendue des fractures de la masse rocheuse induites par l’exploitation par blocs foudroyés; cela permet d’interpréter le profil de la chambre foudroyée et de valider les modèles prédictifs numériques. Les incertitudes quant à la localisation de la source peuvent conduire à des mésinterprétations des caractéristiques inférés du réseau de fractures. Une des principales sources d’incertitudes est le modèle de vitesse utilisé pour inverser l’algorithme de localisation. Des modèles numériques tridimensionnels à grande échelle des changements du module d’élasticité à travers une masse foudroyée peuvent représenter de telles complexités dans les algorithmes de localisation, permettant ainsi une interprétation plus juste de l’activité microsismique. "Demonstrations of Automatic Coal Burning EquipmentAT THE 1951 and 1952 Annual Coal Research Conferences sponsored by the Dominion Coal Board and attended by delegates from the Dominion and Provincial governments as well as industry, the importance ,of encouraging the co-operative interest of Canadian coal and equipment industries in •promoting the use of equipment types best suited to burn given Canadian coals was emphasized. It. was suggested that this idea •be enlarged upon at forthcoming C.I.M. meetings that would be .attended largely by coal mining engineers.With this in view, a Domestic Heating Forum (1) was featured in the Coal Division programme at the 1951 Annual Western Meeting of the Institute in Calgary, and a much more ambitious programme, highlighted by live demonstrations, was •staged at the combined Annual Western Meeting and Fourth Meeting of District 4 held in Winnipeg in October 1952.With the excellent co-operation of a number of equipment manufacturers and coal companies, and with facilities kindly provided •by the University •of Manitoba authorities, burning demonstrations were• arranged in the Agricultural Engineering Building, on October l 7th. These demonstrations were a fitting sequel to the Coal Division sessions held in the Royal Alexandra Hotel on October 16th, at which the combustion of coal was specially featured in a series of papers by prominent Canadian and United States specialists.The primary purpose of the demonstrations was to •show that all coal, regardless •of rank, can be satisfactorily used provided that proper application is made with equipment suited to its purpose."

"Résumé - Cette étude porte sur l'altération de la matière organique et des argiles dans les boues carbonatés dévoniennes du facies ""F' de la Formation de Pine Point et ses équivalents stratigraphiques la Formation d'Evie et l'unité bitumineuse de la base de la Fonnation de Hom River. La matière organique se compose principalement de bituré solide et de quelques fragments de fossiles (organaclastes). La majorité des échantillons ne renfement que de l'illite et des inter-stratifiées illite/smectite.Si on compare les températures d'homogénéisation (Th = 100°C) des inclusions fluides de la sphalérite et des dolomites associées a la minéralisation aux températures estimées à partir de la réflectance de la collinite (84°C à 117°C), l'on ne peut pas conclure à la présence d'une anomalie thermique dans le district minier de Pine Point. De plus, la réflectance des organoclastes n'est pas plus élevée dans le district minier de Pine Point que dans les localités plus éloignées des gites. L'analyse des minéraux argileux conduit à la même conclusion: aucune anomalie thermique n'est décelable dans les unités échantillonnées à l'intérieur du district minier de Pine Point quelque soit l'indicateur utilisé.La kaolinite et la matière organique altérée, affichant des valeurs anomales de sa réflectance, se trouve essentiellement en présence de soufre et de sulfures. Cela suggère une origine authigène de la kaolinite et une altération de la matière organique reliées au phénomènes de minéralisation.Abstract - The alteration of organic matter and clays is studied in the Devonian Pine Point Formation carbonate muds, ""F"" facies, and its lateral equivalents the Evie Formation and the bituminous unit at the base of the Hom River Formation. The organic matter is mainly composed of solid bitumen with few fossil fragments (organoclasts). Most samples contain only illite and mixed layer illite/smectite.If we compare the Th (100°C) from fluid inclusions of sphalerite and dolomites associated with mineralization to the temperatures calculated from the reflectance (Ro) of the collinite (84°C to 117°C), we cannot detect a thermal anomaly in the Pine Point mining district. This result is based on the reflectance values of organoclasts from the mining district that are not higher than those reflectance values measured on organic matter (OM) away from the ore deposit. A similar conclusion is reached from the clay study: none of the parameters used allow us to identify a thermal anomaly in the samples from the mining district.The kaolinite and the altered OM showing anomalous Ro values mainly occur with sulfides and sulfur. This association suggests an authigenic origin for the kaolinite and an alteration of the OM due to the mineralization events."

"The “Jameson Cell” flotation cell was developed at Mount Isa Mines in the late 1980’s to address deficiencies in our flotation column installations. Early base metal installations had a variable record. The test work and trials showed they made an improvement metallurgically when operated correctly, but performance of the early installations was hindered by a range of operational and maintenance issues. The installations needed to be more robust, and we needed a better understanding of how to successfully integrate the cells into the plant flow sheet.During the 1990’s, Jameson Cells had great success in coal fines flotation and organic removal in SXEW applications, and became the standard in these applications in Australia. These installations improved the cell design and materials of construction and the cell flow sheet design, to make it low wear with self-regulating control, producing good performance with little operator input.These improvements have enabled a fresh look at the use of Jameson Cells in base metals. Recent new installations have shown significant benefits in “hybrid” circuits, that combine the best features of both Jameson Cells and conventional flotation cells, achieving better overall circuit performance in a smaller footprint than either technology could do by itself.Case studies of successful base metal applications are discussed, using size-by-size mineralogical performance to explain the improved circuit performance. The new methods of flow sheet test work design are also described."

The CIM network has an integral role in the future of mineral education in today?s classrooms in Canada and programs of this caliber are vital to our future. The industry needs help in raising awareness of the benefits of modern mining and teachers need help in acquiring that information.

Current practices in electrolytic winning and refining of copper , nickel and zinc are reviewed from the point of view of their respective energy requirements. The electrical energy requirements of these processes are broken down in to the individual components, which belong to two basic categories: (a) thermodynamic energy requirements (G of the desired reaction) : (b) energy losses (anode and cathode polarizations, ohmic drops in the electrolyte and in the cell hardware, energy losses due to unwanted side reactions and electrical shorts). The individual energy components are separately examined for each electrolytic process and the potential for energy saving in these processes is discussed. It is shown that many potential energy-saving measures are uneconomical at the present time, as they increase over-all operating costs. The discussion is focused on those approaches which hold most promise for the future.

"Between 1934 and 1956, nearly 31 million grams of gold were produced in the Matachewan area from deposits on properties belonging to Young-Davidson Mines Limited and Matachewan Consolidated Mines Limited. In 1979, production from these properties was renewed by Pamour Porcupine Mines Limited.Most of the gold produced has come from relatively lowgrade deposits (3.4 gl t or less) that occur in an east-trending belt of dykes and irregular bodies of trachytic syenite. Although small by comparison, these deposits have some of the characteristics of porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits. The mineralized syenite contains up to 5 per cent disseminated pyrite and is highly fractured and cut by quartz and quartzcarbonate veinlets. Gold occurs as native gold along fractures, in quartz veinlets and as minute inclusions in pyrite. Minor chalcopyrite and trace amounts of scheelite, molybdenite and galena are also present. Mineralization was accompanied by potassic alteration, consisting mainly of potassium feldspar.Some gold was also produced from small, but higher-grade, deposits in volcanic rocks. These deposits occur near the syenite-hosted deposits and consist of quartz veins and stringers mineralized .with pyrite and gold. Minor gold is present in some low-grade, porphyry-type copper-molybdenum occurrences and, locally, in large, isolated quartz veins.Lead isotope analyses suggest that the gold deposits were formed at about 2700 Ma and were locally remobilized at approximately 2400 Ma, following the Kenoran orogeny. The deposits appear to be genetically related to felsic magmas emplaced in an epizonal environment and deposited from hydrothermal solutions relatively concentrated in S and K20."

"Cigar Lake high-grade uranium mine in Saskatchewan is operating after 25 years of test mining, construction, and mine flood remediation. Factors include ground stability, groundwater control, radiation exposure, and ore handling. A 10 year test program resulted in validating “jet boring”, a non-entry mining method involving artificially freezing the orebody and surrounding rock; tunnelling to develop access crosscuts below the orebody; installing cased pilot holes through ore; extracting ore using rotating high-pressure water jets within pilot holes; and cavity concrete backfilling. Ore slurry is prepared underground, pumped to surface, and trucked to McClean Lake mill for processing to uranium concentrate.RÉSUMÉ Après 25 années d’essais sur les méthodes minières, de construction et d’assainissement suivant les inondations à la mine, l’exploitation de minerai à haute teneur en uranium Cigar Lake, localisée dans la province de la Saskatchewan, est opérationnelle. Les principales difficultés concernent la stabilité du terrain, le contrôle des eaux souterraines, l’exposition aux rayonnements et la manutention du minerai. Un programme d’essai de 10 ans a abouti à la validation du « forage à érosion », une méthode minière qui consiste à congeler artificiellement le corps minéralisé et les roches environnantes ; à creuser des tunnels pour développer des travers-bancs d’accès en dessous du corps minéralisé ; à installer des puits de fondation pilotes à travers le minerai ; à extraire le minerai à l’aide de jets d’eau à haute pression dans les puits pilotes ; et à remblayer les cavités avec du béton. La boue de minerai est préparée sous terre, pompée vers la surface puis transportée par camion jusqu’à l’usine de concentration de McClean Lake pour le traitement afin d’obtenir du concentré d’uranium.INTRODUCTIONThe Cigar Lake deposit is in northern Saskatchewan, 660 km north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, at the east edge of the Athabasca basin (Figure 1; Bishop, Mainville, & Yesnik, 2016). The operation is jointly owned by Cameco Corporation, AREVA Resources Canada Inc., Idemitsu Canada Resources Ltd., and TEPCO Resources Inc. Cameco has been the operator of Cigar Lake since January 2002. The discovery hole was drilled in 1981. Commercial production was declared in May 2015 and the Phase 1 operation will have a mine life of 15 years."

"Koudiat Aïcha is a small Zn-Pb-Cu deposit, enclosed in the Visean Sarhlef volcano-sedimentary series of the Moroccan Hercynian Jebilet massif. Base metal mineralization is located between a basal unit consisting of black argillite with arenite intercalations, and an upper unit composed of black argillite with locally fossiliferous calcareous units towards the top. Paraconcordant gabbro sills are present in both the upper and basal units, and the enclosing strata. Three successive phases of deformation linked to regional deformation overprint the volcano-sedimentary rocks and gabbros, as well as the sulfide mineralization.The mineral deposit includes several lenses of massive to semimassive pyrrhotite, 1 to 20 m thick, with a large halo of disseminated sulfide veinlets and sulfide nodules within a zone of intense chlorite alteration in the footwall. The ore mineralogy consists of massive to semimassive pyrrhotite with lesser amounts of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, galena, pyrite, and stannite.Lead isotope results (206Pb/204Pb averaging 18.27) suggest that the metals of the Koudiat Aïcha deposit are derived from the volcano-sedimentary host rocks. Sulfur isotopes also indicate a volcano-sedimentary origin, with bacterial reduction of sulfate (d34SCDT = -7.5‰ to -10.5‰). The conditions for sulfide meta-morphic equilibration range from 250° to 330°C (sphalerite and chlorite geothermometers). The gabbroic sills could have been a local heat source for hydrothermal circulation. Based on these geological and mineralogical features, a Besshi-type model seems appropriate for the genesis of the Koudiat Aïcha mineralization.Koudiat Aïcha est un petit dépôt de Zn-Pb-Cu, encaissé dans la série volcano-sédimentaire Viséenne de Sarhlef dans le massif Hercynien de Jebilet au Maroc. La minéralisation en métaux usuels se situe entre une unité basale d’argilite noire interlitée d’arénite et une unité supérieure composée d’argilite noire comprenant localement des calcaires fossilifères près de son sommet. Des sills de gabbro paraconcordants sont présent à la fois dans les unités basale et supérieure, ainsi que dans les strates environnantes. Trois phases de déformation successives associées a la déformation régionale superposent leurs effets sur les roches volcano-sédimentaires, les gabbros, ainsi que la minéralisation sulfurée. Ce gîte comprend plusieurs lentilles de pyrrhotite massive a semimassive de 1 a 20 m d’épaisseur au sein d’un large halo de veinules de sulfures disséminés et en nodules au sein d’une zone intensément chloritisée dans le mur du gisement. Le minerai consiste en pyrrhotite massive à semimassive avec des quantités subordonnées de sphalérite, de chalcopyrite, d’arsénopyrite, de galène, de pyrite, et de stannite. Les résultats de l’analyse des isotopes du plomb (206Pb/204Pb moyen de 18.27) suggèrent que les métaux du gîte Koudiat Aïcha proviennent des roches volcano-sédimentaires encaissantes. Les isotopes du souf¬fre indiquent eux-aussi une origine volcano-sédimentaire, impliquant la réduction bactérienne des sulfates (d34SCDT = -7.5‰ et -10.5‰). "Closed mine sites are widely regarded as a negative asset due to their legacy of environmental impacts. These sites are often characterized by waterbodies with elevated metal concentrations and low pH that are traditionally considered to have little or no value. These sites are potential sources of beneficial biocompounds produced by microalgae in response to environmental stresses. A bio¬prospecting program found that certain microalgae from waterbodies near historical mine sites exhibited higher antibacterial activity than any microalgae previously reported in the literature. There is potential for the mining industry to be involved in examining features such as tailings ponds at mine sites for high-value compounds, including ones that might help mitigate rapidly growing microbial resistance to current antibiotics. ¦ KEYWORDS Antibacterial, Closed mining sites, Metabolites, Microalgae, Stressed environments RÉSUMÉ Les sites miniers clôturés sont généralement considérés comme des actifs négatifs en raison de leurs répercussions sur l’environnement. On trouve souvent sur ces sites des étendues d’eau affichant de fortes concentrations en métaux et un pH faible, généralement considérées comme ayant peu, voire pas de valeur. Ces sites sont des sources potentielles de biocomposants bénéfiques produits par des microalgues en réponse aux perturbations environnementales. Un programme de bioprospection a permis de déterminer que certaines microalgues trouvées dans ces étendues d’eau à proximité de sites miniers historiques présentaient une activité antibactérienne supérieure à celle mentionnée dans toute la docu¬mentation existante. Within Canada, for example, it contributed 2.8% (C$57.6 billion) of the 2016 gross domestic product (Marshall, 2016). Canada also has the highest non-ferrous exploration budget worldwide (Marshall, 2016); therefore, it is likely that mining operations, mine waste disposal, and the number of closed sites will continue to grow in Canada. The environmental impact of mining operations stems from the volume of tailings produced, which can be up to 97–99% of the total volume of ore processed at a mine (Adiansyah, Rosano, Vink, & Keir, 2015). In 2010, mining was the world’s largest industrial producer of waste at a total of 65 billion tonnes: 51 billion tonnes of waste rock (mine overburden) and 14 billion tonnes of tail¬ings (Jones & Boger, 2012)."

Des quartzites très pars ont été dêcouverts au cours de la cartographie de la region du lac des Martres, étape de l'étude géologique de la region de Charlevoix. On distingue quatre groupes métasédimentaires, tons con tenant des niveaux de quartzite dans an moins deux domaines géologiques différents, c'est à l'ouest, clans le domaine gneisso-charnockitique que se situent les quartzites du groupe des Martres. Quartzite et gneiss à grenat et sillimanite, en banes épais, constituent la formation de La Galette. A Pest, dans un environnement gneisso-granitique, les deux groupes métasédimentaires de Saint-Siméon, et de La Malbaie comprennent, par contraste, des bancs pen épais et de compositions variées. Les niveaux de quartzite dépassent rarement 50 m d'épaisseur. L'autre groupe metasédimentaire, celui de Saint-Tite des Caps, recoupé de nombreuses intrusions charnockitiques et granitiques, ne possède que de minces niveaux de quartzite. La pureté et la grande épaisseur des quartzites de La Galette suppose une histoire complexe qui se termine par des depots continentaux de climat aride, par opposition aux depots marins des autres groupes. D'autre part, la presence de ces quartzites an sein de roches Presque anhy¬dres et de haute temperature que sont les charnockites leur confère des caractéristiques de fusion sans decrepitation. Parmi la multitude de depots de quartzite qui existe clans le monde, peu sont de qualité supérieure. Or, de par sa composition chimique, le quartzite de La Galette se compare avantageusement à ceux des meilleurs gisements des Etats-Unis, de l'Europe de l'Ouest et de l'Afrique du Sud. D'accès facile pour l'exploitation, les gisements ne sont qu'à une trentaine de milles de Baie Saint-Paul ou de La Malbaie, sur le Saint-Laurent. L'utilisation en metallurgic prévue pour le quartzite de La Galette comprend la production de silicium, de ferro¬silicium et d'autres alliages de silicium. La composition du quartzite est en outre appropriée pour la production de carbure de silicium et de silicate de sodium. Les fines peu¬vent être utilisées pour la fabrication du verre et comme matière de charge.

"There are two accomplishments of air and gas drilling: a new series of economic and mechanical challenges; and, acceptance as a standard drilling and completion tool.The new challenges are related to the concept of using a gaseous circulating medium in drilling for oil or gas. For purposes of discussion, a two part division has been made: the challenge of fluid invasion control and that of equipment and tools. Great strides have been made in the development of materials and techniques to combat formation fluid invasion. Chemicals and the ""mist drilling"" technique, now in use, have the versatility to cope with a wide range of downhole fluid entry conditions.Equipment and tools have been developed to meet the challenges of better, more economic drilling and completion possible with a gaseous circulating fluid. Economic and operational challenges remain.Acceptance of air and gas drilling as a normal operating tool was reached with difficulty. It is now established as a means of reducing costs in exploratory and develop-mental well drilling, exemplified in a recent study of 226 wells covering 419,407 feet of hole in the United States. Air reached the projected depth in 85 per cent of the operations, although formation water was encountered in 48.7 per cent of the holes. Slim hole bit performance and cost all compared for overall bit averages as part of analysis."

"The Johnny Mountain gold mine in northern British Columbia, owned by skyline Gold Corporation, has been in operation since August 1988. Mill operating difficulties at the start of the operation resulted in a depleted cash flow situation and quick improvements were required to generate a self-sustaining financial basis of operation. In October 1988, Melis Engineering Ltd. was contracted to identify metallurgical difficulties, implement necessary modifications, and undertake mill operations and personnel training in order to achieve production targets.This paper presents the operating difficulties which existed at start-up and describes the methodology used to overcome production problems. Metallurgical testing results are described along with the modifications made to the milling circuit to suit ore metallurgy. Plant changes led to the operation of a simple gravity/flotation circuit to recover gold as bullion and in a copper concentrate. Operation of the originally installed cyanidation circuit was discontinued. This contributed to substantial savings in operating costs and virtually eliminated environmental problems. PROPERRTY LOCATION ANR DESCRIPTIONThe Johnny Mountain mine site is located in northern British Columbia along the Iskuit River about 60 km east of Wrangell, Alaska and 275 km north of Terrace, B. C.. A location map is presented in Figure 1 and a site plan is shown in Figure 2. The complex is located on a mountain plateau about 3, 600 feet above sea level. The plateau is flanked to the north by Johnny Mountain and surrounded on the other sides by steep cliffs."

"A framework for ventilation planning, with a focus on planning to the end-of-mine life, was developed for the Diavik Diamond Mine, Northwest Territories. This framework was successfully used by Diavik’s mine engineers to select a cost-effective ventilation plan that met the life-of-mine requirements. The framework achieved this result by reconciling the production plan with the ventilation plan. A set of design acceptability criteria was created and a PICK (possible, implement, challenge, kill) chart was used to quickly narrow down the generated ideas for detailed assessment and economic analysis. RÉSUMÉ Un cadre de planification de l’aérage, qui met notamment l’accent sur la planification jusqu’à la fin de vie de la mine, a été développé pour la mine de diamants Diavik. Les ingénieurs miniers de Diavik ont su mettre à profit ce cadre pour sélectionner un plan d’aérage rentable qui répondait aux exigences propres à la durée de vie de la mine. C’est en conciliant le plan de production et le plan d’aérage que cet objectif a pu être atteint. In the first year of underground-only operations, the production rate increased from 60 kt of ore per month to more than 160 kt of ore per month. In subsequent years, this rate was continuously increased (Table 1) because the operation went through various improvement initiatives. By the end of 2016, Diavik’s total production was 0.41 Mt (+22.8%) ahead of the 2012 budget for 2016 production."

"La conciliation entre l’expansion de l’industrie minière et les exigences du développement durable représente un grand défi. Face aux différentes controverses touchant cette industrie, la dernière décennie a été marquée par une plus grande mobilisation de l’ensemble des parties prenantes. Cependant, plusieurs carences persistent en matière d’opérationnalisation du concept de développement durable. Ce défi met en cause la responsabilité partagée entre les parties prenantes. Il exige le renforcement des responsabilités gouvernementales et l’instrumentalisation de bonnes pratiques de responsabilité sociale des entreprises. En aval, s’impose la gestion intégrée de l’usage des produits miniers et la promotion de l’innovation et de la recherche.ABSTRACT Conciliation between expansion of the mining industry and sustainable development requirements represents a great challenge. With regards to the various controversies touching this industry, the last decade was marked by a great mobilisation phase of all stakeholders. However, there are still many shortcomings regarding operationalization of the sustainable development concept. This challenge involves shared responsibility between the stakeholders. In his March 31, 1977 budget, Finance Minister Macdonald has attempted the delicate balancing act of stimulating the economy without reinforcing the inflationary pressures which Canada is continuing to experience. Several tax changes of benefit to the mining industry, as well as measures designed to encourage oil exploration in frontier areas, are among the budget proposals. Additional earned depletion of 66- 2 /3 %, which may be offset against income from any source, will be available on drilling costs in excess of $5 million incurred between March 31, 1977 and April 1, 1980 in connection with an exploratory well in Canada, including the continental shelf . Other changes include more favourable treatment of resource property dispositions, less restrictive rules r elating to "successor corporations" , increased capital-cost allowance on railway spur lines, the inclusion of certain production royalties in Canadian development expenses and the application of the lower "manufacturing and processing" tax rate to sulphur production. To encourage business capital spending, the 5% federal investment tax credit it to be extended an additional three years to mid 1980 and broadened to include spending on scientific research and development. The rate of credit will also be selectively increased on a regional basis, to 7.5 % in certain designated areas in Saskatchewan, Manitoba. Northern. Ontario and Quebec, and to 10% in the Atlantic provinces and the Gaspe.

"Fluid inclusion studies from the Cinola deposit indicate low salinities and low C01 contents of the ore fluid. This supports a suggestion that the mineralizing fluids originated from pore water in the fluviatile host rock (mid-Miocene Skonun Formation). Bimodal distribution of filling temperatures suggests the existence of at least two temperature regimes centred on 160°C and 270°C during mineral deposition. Independent age and stratigraphic evidence indicates that depth of mineralization is between 1.1 and 1. 8 km, corresponding to a hydrostatic load of between 110 and 170 bars.RESUMELes donnees sur les inclusions fluides du gisement Cinola indiquent de basses salinites et basses teneurs en C01 . This Paper describes a sudden spill of rock waste used for backfilling from a waste pass at one of the underground mine in Canada thus causing a major failure/accident. The mine operator immediately launched a detailed investigation to understand the causes of this accident and develop procedures to prevent any recurrence of such events in future. The investigators from McGill University were invited to collaborate with the engineers at the mine to examine this accident. The events leading to the accident were studied and appropriate measurements were taken and samples of the waste material was collected for further test and analysis. The field visit and the interview of the witnesses allowed a detail documentation of the events. The sequences of events related to the incident together with the experimental results obtained in the course of the investigation is detailed. The waste material was characterised in the laboratory with regard to its behaviour in the presence of water. This information is then discussed and the failure mechanism involved in this accident is identified. The full recommendation as well as the immediate operational measures implemented by the mine to prevent future occurrence of such events are discussed and presented.

"At an average of 90.3% (for the period of 1 January 2009 to 30 September 2011), Zincor’s zinc recovery was well below the industry standard of 96%. The losses through the residues, in particular the iron residue, were the biggest contributors to the overall zinc loss. It was believed that this loss could be decreased with the implementation of seed recycling. A plant trial was run to test the implementation of a seed recycle. The rate of seed addition through recycle was increased over a 4-week period. The presence of seed decreased the insoluble zinc loss by providing additional surface area for iron to precipitate onto, and reducing coating of unleached neutralising agent. The soluble zinc loss was also decreased at low and moderate seed recycle volumes. The improvement was attributed to agglomeration growth of the recycled particles, which improves the dewatering characteristics of the precipitate. In contrast, the soluble zinc loss increased at high seed recycle rates. This result was attributed to particle crowding and a low wash ratio.INTRODUCTION The Zincor refinery, which closed in December 2011, was situated just outside of Springs in the Gauteng Province of South Africa and employed the conventional Roast-Leach-Electrowin process, which accounts for 75 to 80% of the annual primary zinc production in the world. The refinery fed up to 220 000 t/a of zinc sulphide concentrate. The major portion of the raw material was sourced in Southern Africa from the Rosh Pinah and Black Mountain mines. Between 20 000 and 40 000 t/a of material was imported to make up the deficit and to improve the grade of the feed material. The iron contained in the zinc concentrates, at an average of 6.03% (for the period of 1 January 2009 to 30 September 2011), resulted in the formation of zinc ferrite during roasting, which is insoluble under atmospheric leach conditions. At Zincor, most of the zinc ferrite was dissolved in the residue treatment plant at elevated temperature and high acid strength. The leach liquor from this aggressive leach contained between 15 to 30 g/L of iron, mostly in the ferric form, and was known as the hot iron solution (HIS). The presence of iron in the liquor had an adverse effect on the zinc operation, particularly on the current efficiency in the electrowinning circuit. Therefore the iron needed complete removal."

The study refers to an area of about 70 km2, extended in the Italian Central Alps along the the San Giacomo Valley where different civil and mining works are present The regional geological setting is related to the Pennidic Nappe arrangement, characterized by the emplacement of sub-horizontal gneissic bodies resulting from the Mesoalpine isoclinalic folding of crystalline basements, emplaced throw East, and separated by matasedimentary cover units. The investigated geological rocks, belong to the ?Tambò?Unit, overlapped by its meta-sedimentary cover and by the ?Suretta? Unit. The tectonic contact gently dips to the E?NE. The valley, furrowed by the Liro Torrent, follows a N?S striking tectonic lineament, almost parallel to the nappe contact. A number of more then 70 sites, distributed in the studied area, were chosen and detailed structural and geomechanical field surveys were performed to characterize the rock masses, its intact rock and discontinuities. The procedure identifies the number of joint sets, their representative orientation, the set spacing, the type of movement, the amount of dilatation, the degree of alteration, the roughness coefficient, the presence and nature of infill. Rock mass quality indexes, such as the Rock Mass Rating (Bieniawski, 1989) or the Geological Strength Index (Hoek et al. 2002) have been evaluated in each surveyed site. The work is a contribute in assessing how the geometrical and geomechanical properties of the rock masses can be regarded as regionalized variables. The spatial distribution of these properties is a function of the geological and structural phenomena at which the rock masses have been subjected. The presented geostatistical analysis regards the spatial variation of the orientation of the most representative joint set.
