A comprehensive, harmonic and sustainable development has always been a real concern of state policy makers. To reach such development, regional planning is an approach which is widely applied. This paper deals with policies adopted by a given country with rich mineral deposits, in order to accomplish a mining growth as well as economic development in relatively poor regions. In this regards, first, some worldwide experiences belonging to China, with large scale mining operations and Nigeria with a small scale mining industry, are studied. The mining industry in Iran is then considered as a case study. The study continues by categorizing and prioritizing Iranian regions based on their mining potential and the degree of development, using statistical analysis and Taxonomy and AHP techniques. Results obtained serve to provide recommendations as to where capital investments in the mining industry would produce highest returns. The approach used, together with the practical policies suggested in this paper, can be used to adapt appropriate strategies for mining development in a way that contributes to regional development and a more effective income distribution.

Contract practices affect cost and schedule of tunneling works, impacting risk allocation between Owners and Contractors. The Authors compiled a dataset of projects constructed in the Toronto Area between 1990–2020 procured either Design-Build or Design-Bid-Build. Data were analyzed identifying independent cost variables across the two methods. Overall industry efficiency further comparison with historical information demonstrates the costs of engineering ongoing escalation due to rising trends in environmental requirements and public consultations stirred through modern communicative platforms. These hard to predict and estimate costs need to be included in the risks evaluated and managed by Owners and not by Contractors

Bolting solutions traditionally offered only wet drilling or dry drilling options; each with advantages and disadvantages. Joy Mining Machinery has developed a Mist Drilling System that incorporates the best of both types of drilling. Compared to wet drilling, mist drilling offers as much as a 90% reduction in water use. As a result, floor and roof conditions are tremendously improved. This offers a safer and more comfortable work environment for operators. Mist drilling can offer a significant reduction in noise levels compared to dry drilling and in recent trials, bit life has been greatly improved. Holes are cleaner and operators experience less exposure to respirable dust.

In our work as health physicists*, we do a lot of public speaking and interaction with the public on issues related to development of uranium mining and milling (?uranium recovery?) in the US. Understandingly, the public has important concerns about this. Accordingly, this paper is presented in a ?question and answer? format in which we have tried to capture what are some of the most common concerns we hear from citizens and address them. We have attempted to do so based on the best scientific information we have, representing information well documented in peer-reviewed scientific literature and consensus positions from both national and international scientific standard setting bodies and related committees. We have included some of the more important of these scientifically-based references to support the information provided. A more effective method of fracturing and chipping the formation is necessary to significantly increase the productivity of blasthole drilling with a roller cone bit. The conventional rotary blasthole bit engages the formation and initiates spalls, chipping and fractures in the formation at a rate dependent on the amount of pull down force applied by the drill. The rotary speed of the drill increases the number of fractures and creates drilled chips that are removed from the hole by the air circulation. An engineering project was motivated to develop a low pressure, low impact downhole percussion hammer to provide an overstrike force to a blasthole bit, in addition to the conventional pull down force and rotary speed. The objective of the project was to utilize existing rig air packages in the range of 50-110 psig and provide an overstrike force to the bit in the range of 1100-1500 impacts per minute. Laboratory testing performed on Barre granite achieved, on average, a 40% improvement in rate of penetration. This performance has been confirmed in actual blasthole drilling in copper and iron ores mines. During the testing phase, additional unexpected benefits have also been realized.

In 1971, Bituminous Coal Research, Inc~ established a program to provide the coal industry with the necessary information and technical capability to investigate and evaluate potential problems concerning trace elements in coal and coal-related materials. The initial efforts at BCR in developing or adapting analytical procedures for the precise determination of trace elements in the parts per million to parts per billion range were detailed in a report titled "The Development of Analytical Methods for Determining Trace Elements in Coal and Coal-related Products." A subsequent reports contained descriptions of reliable analytical methods refined by BCR for determining mercury in coal and coal ash and also in coal mine water. his paper reports initial progress in applying recently-acquired trace-element analytical capabilities to solving potential coal industry problems. In this case, the effect of a coal-cleaning process on the distribution and removal of potentially harmful trace elements in coal was evaluated. Coal cleaning offers the possibility of controlling potentially harmful emissions resulting from combustion of large tonnages of coal by removing the pollutants prior to combustion.

The volume of data produced by operating mines has increased substantially over the last 10 years. However, the volume of data and analytical capability has been negatively correlated to equipment productivity for at least the last seven years. In simple terms, as the volume of data has increased equipment performance has declined. Table (2010) tells us that ?The calamity of the information age is that the toxicity of data increases much faster than its benefits?. More data does not guarantee improving productivity; but more data is also not the cause of declining productivity. Similarly, when equipment performance does start to improve, (it must ? there really is no option if mines want to remain competitive), it will not be the data nor analytics which causes it; it will be the people using the resources at their disposal; including the data. Data and analytics can help if the toxicity of the data can be managed. The simplest form of business improvement using data is benchmarking. The objective of benchmarking is to understand and evaluate the current position of a process in relation to ?best practice? and to identify areas and means of performance improvement. The application of benchmarking involves four key steps: (1) Analyze and understand in detail existing processes; (2) Analyze and understand the processes of others; (3) Compare your own performance with that of the others analyzed; and (4) Design and implement the changes necessary to close the performance gap(s). There are however, many in the mining industries who have shunned equipment benchmarking because they believe that, ?every mine is a pilot?. In other words, the differences between mine operations make comparisons between them of little value. This paper will present a valid approach to benchmarking equipment performance and reliability, accounting for the differences and similarities between operations, producing a result which can be used to add value to mines around the world.

Traditional loading systems have relied for many years on wheel and track loaders, power shovels, conveyor belts, and more recently, hydraulic front shovels. Each has certain advantages and disadvantages, depending largely on job conditions. Hydraulic backhoes were introduced several years ago as still another truck loading option. At first, buckets were small and backhoe use was limited to small earthmoving projects. Now, as backhoes are equipped with shorter sticks and bigger buckets to move larger quantities of earth. The "mass excavation" concept offers an excellent truck loading option in many situations. System Development and Advantages Mass excavation was first used successfully by contractors in site development and highway construction, loading both on-highway and off-highway trucks. Operators were able to take advantage of the excavator's ability to work in poor underfoot conditions and dig in tough materials. The technique was first applied to mining in the kaolin mines of central Georgia. Kaolin, one of the world's most abundant minerals, is used to make paper, paint, ceramics, rubber, plastics, and many other products. Since kaolin clay is slippery when wet, load-out with wheel loaders is very inefficient. Also, kaolin is found in very spotty deposits due to the weathering process involved in its formation. Consequently, draglines are also impractical for kaolin mining since they don't have the mobility to move between clay deposits. In response to these mining conditions and kaolin characteristics, mines began using excavators in mass excavation as early as 1976. They have developed a system that takes advantage of the excavator's •high penetration and breakout force in tight materials; •fast-cycling hydraulics; •ability to work in poor underfoot conditions; and •mobility in comparison to draglines. This loading method has been successful in Georgia's kaolin mines and now can be applied to other mining operations as well. "The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), a concept that combines sensor networks and control systems, has been employed in several industries to improve productivity and safety. U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers are investigating IIoT applications to identify the challenges of and potential solutions for transferring IIoT from other industries to the mining industry. Specifically, NIOSH has reviewed existing sensors and communications network systems used in U.S. underground coal mines to determine whether they are capable of supporting IIoT systems. The results show that about 40 percent of the installed post-accident communication systems as of 2014 require minimal or no modification to support IIoT applications. NIOSH researchers also developed an IIoT monitoring and control prototype system using low-cost microcontroller Wi-Fi boards to detect a door opening on a refuge alternative, activate fans located inside the Pittsburgh Experimental Mine and actuate an alarm beacon on the surface. The results of this feasibility study can be used to explore IIoT applications in underground coal mines based on existing communication and tracking infrastructure.IntroductionThe U.S. approach to health and safety in mining has historically been reactive in the sense that health and safety regulations and mandates have traditionally been passed as a result of tragic mining accidents. An example of this is the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006, which was passed as a result of several mining accidents where tracking of and communication with underground personnel were severely limited. While this reactive approach has led to the development and implementation of highly impactful safety interventions and safety practices, there exists a technological revolution that can shift the paradigm toward a proactive approach based on preventative methods: Internet of Things (IoT).IoT is the network of physical objects, or “things,” embedded with electronics, sensors and connectivity to enable that network to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and/or other connected devices (Atzori, Iera and Morabito, 2010; Gubbi et al. 2013). It should be noted that IoT has been defined from various perspectives, and hence numerous definitions exist in the literature. The apparent ambiguity of the IoT definition might be due to the fact that IoT is syntactically composed of two terms: the Internet and things. The first word pushes toward a network-oriented vision, while the second tends to put the focus on generic objects. The traditional Internet can be viewed as an internet of computers, so things connected to the Internet are computers only. IoT extends the internet by allowing other generic things that are commonly found in daily life, such as refrigerators and cars, to be interconnected through the Internet, thus creating a bridge between the virtual world and the physical world"

Smooth roll crushers are widely used as secondary crushers, operating most effectively when set for size reductions in a ratio between 3 or 4 to I. The feed supplied to these units varies from 13 to 102 mm in size and the product obtained ranges from 13 mm to about 20 mesh. Smooth roll crushers produce very few fines and absolutely no oversize. The diameter otfhe rolls varies with the clearance between them, feed size, and the coefficient of internal friction ofmaterial to be crushed, Detailed calculations of this relationship may be found in Unit operations of Chemical Engineering, (McCabe, W. Traditional headed rebar has existed in the mining industry as a ground support product for many years. The head of a rebar bolt is most commonly produced by hot upset die forging. Upset die forging produces a rugged, simple head that performs well. Certain elements of the head must comply with regulatory standards, such as ASTM F432-95, which offers a standard test procedure to ensure quality of the product. The head style produced by all major manufacturers has been optimized to reduce manufacturing costs, provide greater miner safety and provide an excellent performing product. Observations were made in some mines of heads failing under in-situ loading. These observations could not be replicated according to the ASTM testing method. This paper highlights the problem and how a solution was developed. The development includes pictures of in-situ failures from the underground operations, laboratory replication tests indicating how this loading occurs, and then the use of this calibrated test method to validate the new design created.

The steepness of the slopes of an open pit mine has a substantial influence on the financial return of the mine. The paper proposes a novel design methodology where overall steeper pitwalls are employed without compromising the safety of the mine. In current design practice pitwall profiles are often planar in crosssection and the profile in between ramps especially tend to be planar and defined by a constant inter-ramp angle. Sometimes rock layers exhibiting different strengths require the inclination of the profile to vary with depth, but the inclination across each layer is usually constant. Here instead, a new geotechnical software, OptimalSlope, is employed to determine optimal pitwall profiles of depth varying inclination. OptimalSlope seeks the solution of a mathematical optimization problem where the overall steepness of the pitwall, from crest to toe, is maximized for an assigned lithology, geotechnical properties and Factor of Safety (FoS). Bench geometries (bench height, face inclination, minimum berm width) are imposed in the optimization as constraints which bind the maximum local inclination of the sought optimal profile together with any other constraints such as geological discontinuities that may influence slope failure. The obtained optimal profiles are always steeper than their planar counterparts (i.e. the planar profiles exhibiting the same FoS) up to 8 degrees depending on rock type and severity of constraints on local inclinations. The design of a copper mine is first carried out employing planar pitwalls, secondly adopting the optimal pitwall profiles determined by OptimalSlope. The adoption of optimal slope profiles leads to a 34% higher net present value and reductions of carbon footprint and energy consumption of 0.17 Mt CO2 eq and 82.5 million MJ respectively due to a 15% reduction of rockwaste volume.

Installation of initial tunnel support is often the most uncertain element of work in the design of, and a contractor bidding on, construction of a rock tunnel. The risks the construction contractor and owner assume are delineated to a great extent in the technical specifications portion of the contract documents. It is intended that this paper identify current practices for specifying initial tunnel support and the impacts each case has on the assignment of risks associated with providing the initial tunnel support. Examples of recently completed tunnel designs are given.

The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) held its biennial conference May 14 through 16, 2006, in Keystone, CO. SEG is an international organization with about 3,500 individual members with interests in economic geology. The 2006 SEG conference theme was “Wealth creation in the minerals industry — integrating science, business and education.” The conference exceeded expectations with 705 participants, including 102 students, from 44 countries. The conference featured 30 oral presentations, 24 professional posters and more than 70 student posters. The conference also included a trade show with 50 vendors, numerous field trips, workshops and social activities.

As one of the main power sources, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) will continue to be applied on a large scale in the future market. Commercialized LIBs cathode materials contain various valuable metal elements including Li, Co, and Ni. The development of green and efficient recycling technology is essential. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have recently emerged as a new class of green solvents that could potentially be applied for the LIBs recycling industry due to their capability to leach the active materials without the introduction of environmentally hazardous reagents as used in conventional hydrometallurgy process. Considering the rapid progress, a critical review focusing on the progress and fundamentals about the overall efficiency has practical significance for the further advancement of this field. Herein, we briefly introduce the overall process of using DESs for LIBs recycling and specifically focus on the efficiency of each step. Current fundamental understandings and new experimental approaches to enhance the efficiency of the leaching process, the extraction process, and reusability are summarized. We expect this review article to inspire scientists to use DESs as powerful tools for advancing the frontiers of LIBs recycling.

Respirable crystalline silica poses a significant health risk, with the American Lung Association estimating that 2.3 million workers are exposed to silica in the workplace. This includes mine workers as well as those in many other industries. Reducing dust formation is sometimes not possible so other methods to reduce exposure are critical. These methods include the use of surfactants to reduce airborne dust particles. However, it is the proper selection and application of surfactants that leads to reduced dust exposure. A discussion of how surfactants work, especially for silica dust, leads to guidance for surfactant selection followed by a review of technologies for their application.

Methane gas is emitted during both underground and surface coal mining. Underground coal mines need to monitor methane gas emissions to ensure adequate ventilation is provided to guarantee that methane concentrations remain low under different production and environmental conditions. Prediction of methane concentrations in underground mines can also contribute towards the successful management of methane gas emissions. The main objective of this research is to develop a forecasting methodology for methane gas emissions based on time series analysis. Methane time series data were retrieved from atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) of three underground coal mines in the USA. The AMS data were stored and pre-processed using an Atmospheric Monitoring Analysis and Database Management system. Furthermore, different statistical dependence measures such as cross-correlation, autocorrelation, cross-covariance, and variograms were implemented to investigate the potential autocorrelations of methane gas as well as its association with auxiliary variables (barometric pressure and coal production). The autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) time series model which is based on auto-correlations of the methane gas is investigated. It is established that ARIMA used in the one-step-ahead forecasting mode provides accurate estimates that match the direction (increase/decrease) of the methane gas emission data.

Strip mining has played a key role in the production of coal used to produce energy in this country. About 56 percent of the 1.3 x 106 hectares (3.2 x 106 acres) that had been disturbed by surface mining as of 1965 can be attributed to stripping (Udall, 1967). The runoff from these stripped areas is usually heavily polluted with high concentrations of total dissolved solids, iron, aluminum, manganese, sulfates, and has low pH values with high acidity. Another problem of a most serious nature in our large cities is the volume of treated solids to be disposed of after sewage treatment. Chicago is presently producing about 664 metric tons/day of dry weight solids (Horn and Earles, 1968). Disposal methods most commonly used include lagooning, incineration, and landfilling. The high cost of land in an urban community is prohibitive of lagoon storage. Incineration and landfill disposal create air and water pollution problems. Many countries including Australia, England and Israel have long realized the value of sewage solids if they are recycled back to the land. In the United States, the value of such solids in reclaiming strip mined land has been recognized by relatively few people. This paper is concerned with the use of anaerobically digested sludge to reclaim strip mined land.

Sustainability of lignite mining in the Rhenish lignite mining area is ensured by a preceding study of the overall project, with the involvement of all those affected. The supporting holistic consideration of the various sustainability elements is essential for a later balancing of the several ecological, economic and social concerns. In what follows, a brief overview of the Rhenish lignite mining area is given as introduction to the focus of this report, which is on sustainability, starting with the approval procedure under regional planning law incl. opencast mine planning, and extending to concrete on-the-spot implementation, taking the Garzweiler II follow-up mine as example. To illustrate the issues involved, an account is given of some selected sustainability elements.

Beam theory is a proxy for the behavior of intact, deforming roof strata above underground openings. Strong, stiff, intact strata have the ability to store significant strain energy when underground openings have large spans, as is typical of longwall operations. When strata fail, they may release some or all of this strain energy. Released energy is partitioned between fracture, thermal, and seismic energy. The tensile failure surface in simply supported beams is predicted to be free of shear stress. This prediction and the kinematic inability of crack slip during fracture make significant dissipation of energy by friction unlikely. In this study, the failure energy partitioning of Nugget Sandstone specimens is examined. Tensile fractures in specimens were induced using three-point loading tests. Elastic waves emanating from fracture events were recorded using an array of accelerometers. Accelerometers were placed within two crack lengths of the fracture surface, and the acceleration records are similar to strong motion seismic records. Spectral analysis was performed and used to develop synthetic, well-behaved, acceleration signals. Synthetic velocity signals were used to estimate radiated seismic energy generated by fracture. These estimates of radiated seismic energy demonstrate a potential means to constrain the minimum seismic partition. Fracture testing was performed on additional samples to estimate the fracture toughness of the sandstone. Synthesis of this data demonstrate a potential means to constrain a maximum seismic partition. Bounding the seismic partition for this type of fracture event could aid the detection and evaluation of seismicity emanating from longwall operations. Having better information about the location and magnitude of mining-induced seismicity within longwall overburdens could lead to better understanding of extraction sequencing and rock behavior in general. These energy estimates also support the hypothesis that dissipation of thermal energy by friction is small in bending tensile failure.
