Mercury exists in coal at very low levels; the structure of coal, the vapor pressure of mercury, and its almost universal occurrence introduce unusual problems into the analytical methods. Round-robin analyses by several laboratories, each using its own techniques, indicate that the average mercury content of coal is about 0.2 part per million. Some western coals are as low as 0.05 ppm.

This paper is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines describing methods and costs of mining and preparing sand and gravel for market at various plants throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The Clowdy plant, with which this paper deals, is located 7 miles west of Dallas, Tex., and has a rail connection with the Texas and Pacific Railway. In addition to the rail outlet there is a paved road over which materials produced at this plant can be moved into Dallas by truck.

Computer programs are presented that provide mine electrical systems based on computer modeling for design and safety analysis suitable for large or small computer systems and handheld calculators. Bureau of Mines research has resulted in load-flow, fault, grounding, reliability, short-circuit, transient, and cable ampacity computer models that enable mine power system engineers to analyze their system or to design a system. This report describes the capabilities of the program.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and others have conducted a number of occupational exposure surveys since the publication of the International Agency for Research on Cancer report of 1989(1), which labeled diesel exhaust as a probable human carcinogen. These surveys have assessed diesel exhaust exposure using measurement of diesel aerosol and/or specific polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as indicators of exposure. This report reviews, available diesel exhaust aerosol and gas measurement techniques. Measurement of human exposure to toxic agents is the first step in determining the exposure-dose-response relationship. It is a fundamental step in risk assessment. Measuring exposure to diesel exhaust pollutants is particularly challenging due to the complexity and variability of exhaust components. This paper reviews current occupational health standards for diesel emissions and available diesel exhaust gas and aerosol measurement techniques. Although surveys in mines have primarily assessed diesel exhaust exposure using diesel particulate matter (DPM) some exhaust gas measurements have been used as indicators of exposure. DPM is emphasized because it is a major component of diesel exhaust, is suspected to make a major contribution to the health hazard, and is measurable. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH STANDARDS Occupational exposure surveys of diesel exhaust frequently measure regulated pollutants, or pollutants that are suspected carcinogens, even if no permissible exposure limits (PELs) have been established. In the United States, various organizations recommend a range of allowable values for diesel exhaust gaseous constituents, including carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO.), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitric oxide (NO), and formaldehyde (HCHO). Table I summarizes these recommended levels, showing 8-hour or 10-hour time-weighted-average values where available; where these are not available, 15-minute short-term [ ]

Illegitimate loads on a mine dc power distribution system can be detected by measuring a superimposed ac current. To implement such a scheme, a 10-volt, 3-kHz voltage is applied at each dc power substation. By this means, the mine dc power distribution network, consisting of a feeder and trolley wires with a grounded rail return, is caused to serve also as a 3-kHz ac distribution network.

The American Society for Testing Materials4 has recommended that the melting temperature of potassium chromate be used-for indicating the temperature to which a coal sample should be heated in the standard method of analysis to determine its volatile matter content. The specified temperature is 950± 20° C., the melting point of potassium chromate being noted as 940° C. Le Chatelier5 originally found the melting point to be 975°; later6 he found 9400. According to Shemtschushny7 the melting point is 984°; he also found a transition at 679°. Groschuff8 found the melting point to be 971° and the transition temperature 679°. Amadori9 reports a melting point of 9.78° and a transition point of 666°. The International Critical Tables10 take the melting point as 975°, which is estimated to be correct to two significant figures. In view of the apparent uncertainty existing, it has been though worthwhile to make a careful redetermination of this datum. It is of interest not only to determine the melting point of the pure salt, but also of the commercial product, in order to test its suitability for use as a temperature indicator. "In accident prevention, a study of statistical data is necessary to determine primary causes of accidents to devise means to eliminate causes at the original sources. Explosions in coal mines of the United States during the 10 years ending December 31, 1931, ranked third in the causes of fatal accidents; they constituted 16.2 per cent of all fatal accidents in bituminous mines and 8.4 per cent of all fatal accidents in anthracite mines. A study of coal-mine explosions in Pennsylvania, with approximately 160,000 men employed in anthracite mines and about 145,000 in bituminous mines or about 205,000 out of -the approximately 525,000 men employed in all coal mines of the United States, should give information of value to all persons endeavoring to reduce or eliminate coal-mine explosions. This circular reviews explosions of gas or dust or of both in the coal mines of Pennsylvania to show the hazard of gas and dust, to point out the influence of certain factors in causing explosions, and to emphasize the efficacy of explosion-preventive measures.The data published annually by the State Department of Mines and of the United States Bureau of Mines were used in compiling the tables of explosions. Through the cooperation of W. H. Glasgow, secretary, Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, and his assistants, many doubtful cases were clarified, so that as far as recorded the history is comparatively complete. Figures used in compiling some of the tables were furnished by W. W. Adams, chief statistician, demographical division, United States Bureau of Mines.Anthracite in the Wyoming Basin of Pennsylvania was used locally by gunsmiths in 1755, by blacksmiths in 1769, and as domestic fuel in 1808.Mining and shipments developed slowly between 1806 and 1812, but more rapidly after that.Early mining along the outcrops gave essentially no trouble from gas, but by 1870, when State inspection was established, explosions were frequent; ventilation was crude and accumulations of gas were generally ""brushed"" or burned out.Table 1 lists 1,232 ignitions and explosions of gas in anthracite mines from 1870 to 1932, inclusive, every one of which was accompanied by loss of life. Some details are given of 110 representative cases in which five or more lives were lost or in which it appeared that some violence was present.During the period 1870 to 1932, inclusive, gas explosions caused 2,213 fatalities, or an average of about two deaths for each ignition or explosion. Records are not available as to the number injured in these and in other explosions where no deaths occurred, but from a study of explosion reports it appears probable that the number injured exceeds the number killed. In the 110 cases described, 599 were killed and 294 were injured. As shown in Table 2, fatalities from gas explosions averaged 8.3 percent of the total fatalities in Pennsylvania anthracite mines from 1870 to 1931, varying from 6.0 percent in 1931 to 13.1 percent in 1927."

"Exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres has long posed a serious hazard to miners. The control of these hazards, some of which can have sudden and catastrophic effects and some others, slow and long enduring consequences, has been a major concern for labor, management and government alike. This concern has manifested itself in four primary mechanisms of control -- (1) regulatory control through minimum standard setting by the passage of mine health and safety laws, (2) engineering control through design and operation of 'mines according to the best recommended practices, (3) medical control through periodic physical examinations, wearing personal protection devices, etc., and (4) legal and social control through workmen's compensation laws for occupation related health deterioration:-The respirable contaminants in mine atmo¬spheres are toxic and explosive gases, toxic and explosive dusts, diesel exhaust particu¬lates, radon progeny, etc. Perhaps the most important of all these and the most widely occurring in mine atmospheres is respirable dust, an inevitable product of fragmentation, a unit operation fundamental to all mining operations. In fact; the-most serious health hazard for workers in the mining and minerals processing industries is still the exposure to respirable dust, and solutions to the problem of respirable dust disease remain to be found.The 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act and its provisions for the respirable dust standards in underground coal mines are briefly reviewed. An overview of the research accomplishments in meeting the standards is presented. The current state of knowledge on the effectiveness of the standards and the new and emerging problems are discussed. A brief summary of the research programs of the Generic Technology Center on Respirable Dust is presented.In general, underground mines are becoming increasingly safe. [The geophone has occupied a prominent position as a mine signalling device since its first introduction. The Bureau has carried out tests at different times with a view to improving the early geophones. The following paper describes briefly the adaption of the vacuum-tube audio frequency Amplifier to a new form of geophone. It is not intended to convey the idea that the results described are sufficient to warrant the drawing of definite conclusions as to the practicability of the electrical geophone, but the data and tests liven herein are made public because of their possible use to the industry and as a result of inquiries received as to the feasibility of such adaptions and modifications of the early geophones. Because of the limited time available to the authors, only one geophone with its auxiliary amplifier was constructed. As is well known, two geophones are necessary in order to determine the direction of a sound. Although the principles upon which the electrical geophone operates appear to be fundamentally correct, it is not possible to state whether two such devices 'rill function as efficiently, (as regards determining direction of sound) as the present geophone. In order to operate efficiently as a direction finder, the amplifiers of the electrical geophone must each amplify with exactly the same degree of magnitude. By proper design and adjustment this can probably be accomplished without greatly complicating the design. inasmuch as audio frequency amplification is used, no tuning; is necessary as is the case with tuned radio-frequency circuits. The same filament and plate batteries can be used to operate the amplifiers and by the use of dry cell tubes, requiring shall filament and plate currents, it if believed that a compact, portable and practical instrument can be evolved. Further investigations of the electrical geophone should be conducted to determine the points outlined in this preliminary report.]

"Ferrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced; although it is well known that there are large deposits of low-grade ore in the United States, the production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stockpiled ore is depleted through inability to procure adequate supplies from foreign sources. Consequently, a program of laboratory and pilot-plant investigation designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines.This paper is one of a new series that will include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program. The scope of the program and the organization that woo set up to direct and supervise the work were discussed in the foreword of the first paper of this series, Report of Investigations 3606, Manganese Investigations. 1. Human testing has always been a needed way to provide information on the effects of vehicle vibration, however, the manner of testing has not reflected the real situations of driver’s hands on a steering wheel and a seat with back support and driving tasks. The typical system have used a standard sinusoidal excitation rather than the typical types of road – truck excitations The new truck driver training simulators provide the combination of road roughness, speed effects, cab environment and individual tasks. The system has a full six axis simulation potential. The simulators have the protection of the individual by a combination of two ways for the individual to stop the motion as well as an operator with visual capability who can stop the testing. The closed simulator, shown in Figure 1, has the potential for providing motion during the operation.

A series of 45 zirconium ingots has been cast by the consumable electrode arc melting process with the object of analyzing the effects of power input from 50 to 230 kilowatts and reduced pressure furnace atmosphere to improve the quality of regular 8-inch-diameter production ingots made thereby. Electrode consumption rate, molten pool volume, melting efficiency, sidewall quality, arc stability, and yield efficiency are considered. The use of direct current and alternating current is studied. In conclusion, reduced pressure furnace operation is shown to promote electrical efficiency, ingot homogeneity, high metal yield, and are stability. INTRODUCTION Zirconium is a particularly difficult metal to melt because of its affinity for atmospheric gases and its solvent properties when molten. In addition, zirconium sponge as produced by the boll process contains minor amounts of magnesium chloride, which cause severe spattering luring melting, because of these difficulties with zirconium, and its sister metal titanium, near techniques have been developed to permit production of commercial size ingots. Among the more promising is the consumable electrode arc melting method.

During the past few years the use of mechanical equipment for the loading and transportation of coal at the working face has rapidly increased . Many mining officials are of the opinion that mechanical methods have tended to reduce the hazards of mining, and a number of statements have been made to this effect . Little actual data upon which to base conclusions in regard to the relative safety of various methods of mining have been made available . While it may be possible that these systems of mechanical mining are inherently less hazardous , obvious dangers should not be disregarded in the belief that the mere act of installing mechanical loading equipment automatically brings about better accident records . The same rules and regulations , modified to meet the new regime must be applied with the same discipline as heretofore . By diligent study and application there is reason to believe that new methods of concentrated mining can be utilized with at least a possibility of increased accident performance . With the idea of preventing accidents by taking available precautions against their occurrence , attention should be directed to the dangers that exist where room and face conveyors are in operation . Due to the cost pressure prevalent in the mining industry at the present time mechanical means are often used in an attempt to decrease cost of production. The management , after having spent considerable sums of money for new equipment , is expected by stockholders and investors to show results by increasing tonnage and reducing operating costs . Consequently the operating officials apply the same pressure to local mine officials to obtain results . The natural reaction of the superintendent and mine foreman is to secure the maximum production from the new method , and unfortunately safety is frequently , if not generally , sacrificed to this end . In many instances , operators of new types of mechanical loaders are difficult to secure and after being obtained are difficult to hold , especially if the new equipment is more or less in the experimental stage . The tendency is to handle the machine operators with " gloved hands " and to permit many unsafe practices which ordinarily would not be allowed, in order to keep from antagonizing them and losing their services . Although these unsafe practices become habitual and even uneconomical , conditions thus established are difficult , sometimes impossible , to change .

Magnetite mines in the Sterling tract, Orange County, N. Y., were operated almost continuously from pre-Revolutionary days until 1923. The Red-Back mine, one of several in this tract, was discovered in 1780; operated briefly in 1880; and abandoned, presumably because the iron ore contained considerable sulfur. The mine is in rough, mountainous country, with altitudes ranging from 500 to 1,100 feet. The magnetite deposit occurs in complex metamorphosed pre-Cambrian formation and is thought to be a replacement of limestone by magnetite. A dip-needle survey, completed in 1916, traced magnetic anomalies for a mile along the outcrop. A preliminary examination of the Red-Back mine was made by W. T. Millar, Bureau of Mines engineer, in December 1942. The Bureau of Mines bored seven diamond-drill holes aggregating 2,727.6 feet during the winter of 1943-44. A zone of magnetite mineralization was intersected in each of the holes.

"This paper discusses the evaluation and application of a portable parked-vehicle tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus (EMA). The EMA consists of an exhaust dilution system and a portable instrument package. The EMA instantaneously dilutes and cools a sample of exhaust with compressed nitrogen or air at a known dilution ratio, thereby presenting it to instruments as it is presented to personnel in the surrounding environment. The operating principles and governing equations of the EMA are presented.A computational method is presented to determine the engine operating and performance parameters from the exhaust CO2 concentrations along with an assumed engine overall volumetric efficiency and brake specific fuel consumption. The parameters determined are fuel / air ratio, mass flow rates of fuel, air and exhaust emissions, and engine brake torque and horsepower. These calculated engine parameters are used to characterize engine load when performing EMA in-field tailpipe sampling without a dynamometer, and to detect deteriorated engines.Evaluations of the EMA by comparison of diesel tailpipe measurements with those made using laboratory-grade instruments showed that the EMA measurements are accurate and reproducible. The results also show that the EMA is capable of detecting emission concentration changes resulting from engine faults. Calculated engine operating and performance parameters correlate and compare well with laboratory-measured values.The EMA in-field engine loading and tailpipe sampling procedures for parked vehicles are presented, and results of the EMA field measurements are also presented. Low coefficients of variation for repeat EMA tailpipe measurements on diesel-powered haulage vehicles in four underground mines indicate that the EMA in-field engine loading and tailpipe sampling procedures are reproducible.An analysis of EMA tailpipe measurements for three haulage vehicles in one mine shows that the EMA can: 1) identify haulage vehicles that emit excessively high pollutant concentrations, and 2) provide data needed to evaluate and determine the efficiency and effectiveness of tailpipe emission control devices.Finally, recommendations for a proposed commercial EMA system are presented. This commercial system would overcome many of the adverse features of the prototype EMA used in these tests."

"Two recent occurrences in Western metal mines in each of which 3 men were killed due to breathing fumes from explosives, have aroused keen interest among mining men not only as to the exact cause of such accidents, but also as to possible preventive measures.In sinking the forty five degree incline Marsh *haft near Burke, Idaho, on May 13, 1920, a round of holes containing about sixty pounds of 40 per cent gelatin explosive was blasted by the night shift upon leaving at 11:30 P.M. It was customary for the night shift to leave compressed air blowers open at bottom of abaft until the compressor was shut down slightly before midnight. Presumably this was not done on the night of the lath as the fumes were so heavy in the shaft bottom on the morning of the 14th that at about 8 o'clock, Superintendent Bergen and one of the shaft men, on reaching the shaft bottom, were overcome and fell from the bucket into the sump containing about six feet of water; and when two other men went down in the bucket a few minutes later to investigate, one also fell into the sump and the other was barely able to roach the shaft collar. The three bodies were later on recovered from the sump.At 400 P.M., June 10, 1920, at the Dominion Mine, Colville, Washington, a round of 11 holes containing about fifteen pounds of 60 per cent nitro¬glycerine explosive was blasted in a fifty degree raise about fifty feet above the main tunnel level by the shift going off for the night. in this mine it was the practice not to try to blow out the fumes until just before the shift went to work the next morning, Although no work was being done on the night shift, one of the raise men, curious to ascertain the effect of the shots, about 7:45 P.M., wandered into the mine (which was a tunnel only a few hundred feet in length), and was missed by one of his companions about an hour later. When three men tried to remove the body of the inquisitive miner, two of them were also overcome; ultimately these two and the first man were removed from the point at which all were asphyxiated, which was practically at the foot of themaise."

The purpose of this investigation was to develop and improve mining methods for mining thin coal beds, to increase productivity, and to increase the recovery of coal. German coal planers and a modified longwall system of mining were introduced into American mines and are bringing about increased productivity and better recovery as compared with the conventional methods displaced. Since the first installation, 4 additional planers have been purchased by coal companies and over 1-1/2 mil¬lion tons of coal has been mined by them, using the modified longwall mining method. INTRODUCTION Except from 1932 to 1934, the growth of mechanical loading in underground bituminous-coal and lignite mines in the United States has increased steadily. The amount of coal loaded mechanically in underground mines has increased from 0.3 percent in 1923 to 79.6 percent of the total underground production in 1953.3/ The use of new and improved mining machines and auxiliary equipment, together with new techniques in mining methods, usually has resulted in increased productivity.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted research to determine whether the total elapsed delay time for blasting bituminous coal in underground mines could be safely expanded beyond the present 500-ms limitation without igniting a methane or methane-coal dust atmosphere. The results indicated that the increase of total delay from 500 to 1,000 ms had no detectable effect on safety relative to incendivity as long as permissible practices were observed in all other aspects. Research was also conducted to evaluate the safety of 18-in hole spacing for delay blasting in coal relative to misfires. For a variety of permissible explosives, misfires were observed for about 50 pct of the holes at 18-in spacing. Based on this observation, the Bureau has recommended that the new regulations prohibit hole spacings of less than 24 inches in underground coal mines. Misfires were also observed for 24-in spacing, but the number of misfires and test shots was too small to sup- port any firm conclusions.

The stone resources in certain localities and the kinds of stone available often influence manufacturing companies in their choice of plant location and in possible expansion of their activities. Limestone in particular is an important raw material for many processing industries. In planning highways and public works and placing contracts therefor, the availability of aggregates and road stone is significant. On the other hand, persons who contemplate entering the stone business or opening now quarries need information as to possible competition. To meet the growing need for regional data of this type, the Bureau of Mines has compiled from its records and presents herein the location of stone quarries by States and counties and by kinds of stone. The list covers all stationary and portable commercial quarry operations whose production statistics for 1940 were reported to the Bureau of Mines but does not include undeveloped deposits and noncommercial or Government-operated quarries.
