The restructuring of the minerals industry has created new challenges for the design and delivery of professional development, and difficult decisions for potential participants. New technologies offer some new methods of delivery, but fall short in providing all of the benefits of face-to-face participation. This paper is intended to be a catalyst for discussion of the issues involved in delivery and participation in cost-effective, relevant and timely professional development.

Drilling is one of the most, significant cost components of any stoping or develop- ment operation. Two of the factors contri- buting to the drilling cost are the supply and servicing of consumable items such as drill rods and bits. The purchase cost of consumable items can be controlled to a large extent by using the correct balance of quality and price. However, the service cost is a less easily controlled factor and it is in this area where potential savings are significant. In June, 1976 a six month trial period was commenced at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited with two separate suppliers supplying and ser- vicing all longhole drilling parties (one supplier for each mine) at a guaranteed cost per metre. As a result of this six month trial period a new contract was commenced in December, 1976 with one supplier supplying and servicing all longhole drilling parties at both ZC and NBHC for a twelve month period. This concept has now been in operation for over twelve months and has proved to be a significant means of slowing down the increas- ing cost associated with drilling operations.

A process for eliminating nickel from electrolytic zinc plant solutions by precipita- tion with dimethylglyoxime (DMG) was developed to enable the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited (EZ) to treat nickel-bearing zinc dust precipitates. These precipitates are leached to recover their Cd and Zn content. The final Zn bearing solutions contain relatively high Ni concentra- tions (20-100 mg/1) and are treated with DMG and then neutralized to pH 4.6-4.8. The pre- cipitate is filtered off and the solution returned to circuit. DMG consumption is about 200% of theo- retical requirement, and Ni removal is 80% complete overall.

The integration of economic, cultural, social and environmental decision-making has increasingly become globally recognised as the only acceptable way of doing business consistent with sustainable development. This concept requires a move to a new economy, where environmental, cultural and social issues are accounted for and integrated in business decisions and practice. There has been much discussion on sustainability and sustainable development, but organisations are still grappling with what this means in reality for their business and how they should respond. The challenge is to take the way we do business to a new paradigm and make solutions relevant to business. This paper will look at some of the strategies and programs being adopted or considered by resource companies as they move towards a more sustainable future. These include defining a sustainability framework for their organisation, developing the business case and planning approach. Also included is a brief overview of some of the new approaches to environmental management, such as reducing materials and energy intensity, minimising or eliminating impacts through better waste and emissions management and process control, taking a whole of life approach to products and conserving resources. The concepts of Product Stewardship, Eco-efficiency and Cleaner Production will all be discussed.

Rio Tinto has actively committed to progressive reclamation, concurrent with commercial operations, at its Diavik Diamond Mine. The most significant piece of progressive reclamation undertaken at Diavik to date has been the construction of an engineered thermal rock cover for the mine’s largest waste rock storage area. This 80-metre-tall and 2000-metre-long area is known as the Waste Rock Storage Area – North Country Rock Pile (WRSA-NCRP) and contains the operationally segregated potentially acid-generating waste rock mined over the last 20 years. As part of the mine plan, an opportunity was recognised where a limited 1.5 per cent of the WRSANCRP surface area was required for storage of the balance of life-of-mine generated waste rock and a decision was made to advance the closure design almost a decade ahead of final closure. With over 12 860 000 tonnes of material placed and 57 443 dozer hours logged since cover construction, progressive reclamation on the WRSA-NCRP is scheduled to be complete in mid-2023, three years before planned cessation of commercial operations in 2026. The progressive closure of the WRSA-NCRP demonstrates Rio Tinto’s commitment to not only closure, but modern best practices with integrated mine closure. Over the past seven years, Diavik has overcome multiple implementation hurdles for this project including the psychology of operational standby, the financial mechanisms required to support closure, working within the constraints of a mine plan and the associated operational organisational structures. This paper outlines the lessons learned to provide an example of successful integrated mine planning for closure. The North Country Rock Pile project had three major learnings which resulted in an effective organisational structure that allowed for the execution of an integrated planning model for progressive closure. The initial hurdle the project faced was adapting the psychology of an operational open pit mining team. The team was an experienced mining group who came in with the perspective to target the shortest haul possible resulting in the initial perception that the longer haul of material to the NCRP was an un-necessary task impacting operational performance metrics. After the installation of an improved dispatch tracking system and performance metrics, it was possible to demonstrate that the mine was shovel constrained. This showcased the short haul was generating an increase in queue time not production. With updated performance metrics, the team was aligned to target a decrease standby through haulage to the NCRP. These performance metrics had to be reinforced by financial mechanisms. The operations team was able to offset costs by charging time to the capital project set-up for the closure of the NCRP. This allowed the operations team to receive credit for time that would have otherwise likely been standby. As well, the progressive closure project was able to receive the benefit of not having to incur costs for the drill, blast and load as that was done as part of the operation. This was a significant benefit to the project and one of the primary drivers for the early approvals of the work as the project costs were limited to the incremental haulage distance and placement of the material. Life of Mine Conference 2023 | Brisbane, Australia | 2–4 August 2023 114 While the combined operational and progressive closure approach provided financial advantages, it did result in the project being constrained by the operational activities. A traditional capital project is managed through a linear execution plan where the deliverables within a project are within the realm of control of the project execution team. However, the NCRP project had to be continuously adapted to the outcomes of the pit operations. This included geotechnical constraints, ore delivery, and other operational delays. To adapt, the planning module had to be dynamic but not reactive to allow for adjustments on a shift-by-shift basis. Based on this requirement the Diavik Closure Projects structure adopted a mine planning format. The team executed a similar planning timeline and reporting structure as the mine operations team, allowing planning to be integrated into the operational planning structures on a daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly basis. This resulted in the Projects team as a core pillar of the mine planning team. The process of continuous improvement spanned six years and has resulted in the project being ahead of schedule and under budget for the project’s scheduled progressive closure completion date of June 2023. The North Country Rock Pile project supports the argument that bulk earthworks progressive closure projects should be integrated into the operational mine plan. If the project is aligned the mine plan it allows for dynamic adjustments which capitalise on evolving opportunities inevitable in an operating mine. These cultural and organisational alignments should be supported by appropriate performance metrics and financial mechanisms to ensure united priorities. The result of this alignment provides long-term financial savings for the business as well as delivery of closure objectives.

Squeezing extra performance from existing equipment (‘sweating the assets’) is key to continuous improvement initiatives, particularly during times of cost cutting where the option of spending additional capital to facilitate circuit upgrades can be severely constrained. A common challenge, however, is identifying the best combination of settings for different process variables, as their effects can be camouflaged by interactions with other process variables and, of course, noise in historical data.This paper describes a recent investigation at Boyne Smelters Limited to identify strategies to coarsen the product of its dry, fixed-speed, open-circuit AG mill, without the need for installing pre-screens prior to the mill. The product is used as insulation material for the reduction of alumina to aluminium, and an excessively fine product was inhibiting the ability of the cover material to dissipate heat from the underlying anodes. The approach was to undertake a series of experiments, designed according to statistical criteria, to elucidate the effect of key process variables (feed blend and power draw) upon the product sizing. The results provided clarity about what strategies would encourage the production of a more desirable mill product (with some surprises). The paper briefly describes the mining system employed on Western Deep Levels for the past 20 years. The negative aspects which gave rise to a new mechanized method of mining are discussed. The sequence of events leading from the Mine's first attempt at trackless mining in 1980 to the present day in-stope project is presented. The original justification for this project and the in-stope trackless mining method is described in detail. The results to date are evaluated and the original rationale for going in-stope trackless mining questioned. A totally new mining philosophy for Western Deep Levels, whereby major geological disturbances are left in situ and longwalls re-established and mined using trackless mining machinery is described. The economics of this mining method are discussed. Trackless mining machinery can also be put to good use within the conventional longwalls in a new method of mining using Load Haul Dumpers (LHD) in reef drives. When the instope trackless mining project commenced in 1983, it was stated that expansion to any significant degree with diesel powered vehicles could be ruled out and electrically driven alternatives would have to be developed. This issue is discussed and the Mine's decision to expand with diesel powered vehicles explained. Finally, the extent to which trackless mining is likely to be seen in the 1990 s at Western Deep Levels is discussed.

As the mining industry faces times of change, new challenges arise to ensure raw material supply for the younger and future generations. Different scenarios are currently shaping the way we mine and teach mining engineering. Led by an increasing demand for raw materials, net zero requirements for improving long-term operation performance, technological advancements such as automation and digitalisation, safety improvements, environmental considerations and a need for social acceptance, mining is pursuing to change and adapt to these requirements at a faster pace. Such changing times raise new concerns, one of the most relevant is the lower number of students interested or enrolling in mining engineering and related fields leaving mining engineering as one of the less preferred career options between the younger generations. Nonetheless, it is essential to continue addressing and supplying the skill sets that is suited to contemporary and future of the mining industry. To this end, globally, academia is currently undergoing several initiatives such as curricula updates and adaptation, up skilling, improving teaching practices and techniques, including e-learning techniques, enhancing industry-academia and inter-university collaboration, and much more

The flotation of pyrite in ethyl xanthate solutions is presented along with electrokinetic results. The results have been analysed in view of recently published thermodynamic calculations as well as other published data on the pyrite-xanthate system including adsorption and voltarnmetry studies. The flotation response of pyrite in xanthate solutions is characterised by two maxima, one at pH 4 and the other at pH 8-9. The acidic maxima is also associated with a reversal in the electrophoretic mobility of pyrite, probably due to the formation of ferric xanthate on the pyrite surface through chemisorption of xanthate ions while the basic maxima is not associated with major changes in the mobility and flotation at this pH can probably be attributed the adsorption of dixanthogen. It is concluded that there is not sufficient experimental evidence to conclusively attribute the lack of flotation response in solutions at near neutral pH to any particular phenomena, either kinetic or thermodynamic.

This new family, Rocket Boomer L1C/L2C/L3C, is based on modern computer technology and also on what is characterised as information technology. The design of the drill rigs are modularised both in hardware as in the software. This means that the functionality of the drill rigs is upgradable step by step. Added upon the basic drill rig functions are the new options as ABC Regular (known also as Contour Control), ABC Total, drillplan generator and communication products. The main objectives of these functions are to facilitate real quality drilling.

Green policies have gained momentum since the 1972 Stockholm Environment Conference. The environmental movement has influenced political initiatives both in New Zealand and abroad. Governments and international institutions have addressed local, regional and global environmental issues with varying degrees of success. New Zealand so far has not supported the United Nations' call for sustainable development in a,consistent manner.New institutions and new rules for resource management mean there are opportunities to look after the land in different and more ecologically sensitive ways than has happened in the past.The increasing influence of regional councils in resource management planning will have important implications for mining and mineral exploration. These trends are discussed and possible future events outlined.

This paper refers to a new idea of stereometry of cutting drums of longwall shearers designed to get medium and hard to mine coals. A new way to place picks on a drum enables to readjust a number of picks being in contact with the body of coal to shearer haulage speed. Owing to this a remarkable increase in depth of a cut within the low range of haulage speed has been obtained. On comparing operating characteristics a considerable reduction in the specific energy consumption has been shown when using the units machined as per the new idea, in comparison with the units produced in series.

Geometallurgical modelling of an orebody provides benefits to a mine by gaining a better understanding of the ore characteristics and how they affect the performance of the concentrator. With this knowledge, plant operating conditions can be adjusted to optimise throughput and recovery in advance of the arrival of particular ore types. Therefore, it is extremely important that the origin of the ore being processed is known as accurately as possible. Depending on the homogeneity of the ore characteristics, reliance on assumptions about stockpile residence times, scheduling and material handling can render the best geometallurgical models useless.The solution adopted at Agnico Eagle’s Kittilä mine was to utilise Metso SmartTags™ and in-house expertise to develop a system that continuously and accurately links geotechnical and lab data from the mine to the performance of the plant. This application presented several unique opportunities and challenges. For example, this was the first installation of a SmartTag™ system for geometallurgical modelling in an underground mine. Challenges included the fact that the system installation is routinely subjected to temperatures below -20°C.The system was installed and commissioned in early 2013 and has been operating continuously since. Kittilä has begun to see the benefits of the system, with an increased understanding of how different ores are processed in the concentrator. Other advantages include the ability to alert operators about the arrival of difficult ores and a better understanding of the ore handling systems.This paper describes the installation and use of the system at Kittilä and details some of the geometallurgical relationships that have been developed using the data collected so far.CITATION:La Rosa, D, Rajavuori, L, Korteniemi, J and Wortley, M, 2014. ALTHOUGH the development of the various flotation processes during the last 8 years has been so revolutionary, this development has been, until recently, entirely confined to the separation of the gangue from the mixed metalliferous sulphides.The desirability of finding some method of separating the independent sulphides from such a miXture, by means of flotation, has long been recognized. ThIS need was emphasized when the slimes resulting from the grinding of Broken Hill sulphide ores were for the first time successfully dealt with by the Mineral Separation Company's process on the Central mine. This process proved the practicability of separating the sulphides of lead and zinc as a mixed concentrate from the gangue present in slime. Although this was a very notable achievement, the process has not been generally used, owing to the mixed lead and zinc concentrates resulting from the treatment being acceptable neither to the zinc nor the lead smelters.Although the introduction of eucalyptus oil in minute quantities as an emulsifying agent has simplified the work of the subsequent tabling of mixed sulphide concentrates, rendering unnecessary the burning off or removal of the oil, there will always be a considerable quantity of slimy product too fine to settle on the moving surface of the concentrating machines, and therefore requiring other means for its division into lead and zinc concentrates.

TATA Steel’s R&D Division at Jamshedpur has developed a slime beneficiation process to recover iron values from iron ore slime. This process recovers iron ore concentrate containing 2.2 per cent alumina from a feed containing 7–10 per cent alumina. The reject generated from beneficiation of iron ore slime is treated as waste as the iron content in the reject is below 45 per cent. Effective utilisation of this waste is required for making the iron ore slime beneficiation process a zero-waste technology. In this connection several studies were made towards utilisation of slime waste. One of these studies revealed that slime waste can be used as a soil conditioner. Slime waste contains particles of size less than 10 micron and when these particles are mixed with soil in definite proportions, the porosity and the permeability of the mixture goes down. As a result, the water holding capacity (WHC) improves. This concept was evaluated through a series of tests at greenhouse level to optimise the soil to slime ratio. Finally, a pilot scale field trial was carried out over a period of three months using paddy rice as the crop. Three separate plots with compositions of: soil + organic matter comprising Farmyard Manure (FYM), (ii) soil and slime waste (2:1) + organic matter (FYM), and (iii) soil and slime waste (2:1) + organic matter (FYM) + Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium (NPK) fertiliser were used for the pilot trial. The results showed a 20 per cent increase in the productivity of paddy rice for plot (ii) as compared to plot (i). This was due to the beneficial effect of slime waste in the soil. The addition of inorganic fertiliser such as NPK in the ratio of (4:2:1) further enhanced the productivity of paddy rice.

Metallurgical accounting can be defined as the monitoring of the valuable metals from the time the ore is broken at the primary crusher until the time that we have the saleable products and residues. The overall purpose of metallurgical accounting is to provide management with up-to-date inform- ation that can be used to control mining and metallurgical oper- ations. The decisions that are taken on the basis of the information that the metall- urgical accounting system provides should result in improved control and, ultimately, increased revenue. The current state of accounting is a result of an extended evolutionary process and will continue as process plants bec- ome more sophisticated. Differences in mine æcall factorsÆ and grade control reconciliation can lead to frustration between the siteÆs geoscie- ntists and its metallurgists leading to a level of distrust in the mill grade. Metallurgical accounting is not included in sufficient detail in undergraduate courses and the acceptable industry standards have developed based on what is considered acceptable to industry personnel and consultants. There is now the AMIRA P754 Metal Accounting, Code of Practice and Guidelines Handbook or reference manual. Computer based databases and spreadsheets have transformed tedious bookkeeping into an important management tool. Over time these standards have improved with developments in analytical procedures, weighing technology and sampling. This paper provides anecdotal examples of problems and improvements observed over a number of years within the gold industry in Australia and overseas.

Dispersed gem corundum is mined from placers, commonly from basalt fields, as occurs along eastern Australian and Asian continental margins. New laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis (LA-ICP-MS) of Australian corundum allows genetic distinctions among these suites and gives clues to their primary lithospheric sources prior to basaltic delivery. Bimodal corundum suites at Barrington Tops, Cudgegong-Gulgong-Macquarie River and Yarrowitch, New South Wales (NSW), include lower Ga, higher Mg æmetamorphicÆ and higher Ga, lower Mg æmagmaticÆ groups. The Barrington Tops æmetamorphicÆ corundum is more Fe-rich (av 4500 - 7100 ppm) than Cudgegong- Macquarie River equivalents (av Fe 1800 - 2100 ppm). Yarrowitch corundum is relatively low in Fe, Ti and Cr. Along with other eastern Australian data (north-east Tasmania; New England, NSW) and from gem fields elsewhere, the combined trace element and O isotope data, reveal considerable geographic and genetic variations within the corundum suites. A few corundum groups contain noticeable Be, Sn, Ta, Nb, a particular genetic message that also precludes easy distinction of treated corundum in the gem trade. Expanding geochemical, inclusion and geochronological data on gem corundum hold promise for characterising derivative gem corundum on both geographic and genetic features.

The use of systematic review methods, derived from System Safety approaches used in the North American nuclear power industry, have become an accepted approach for seeking "approval" for new coal mining equipment and operational changes in NSW. Based on risk analysis, they provide a valuable and needed framework for the reduction of losses related to people, equipment and production.
