The effect of sodium pyrophosphate and several polyacrylate deflocculants (Freevis 502, 528, 529 and 532; and Maxfloc 1015) on the gold loading on Calgon GRC22 and Norit R035l5 carbons was tested and found to be insignificant in a pulp free enviroument. These deflocculants can therefore be used in plants processing viscous gold pulps without fear of fouling the carbon.

The paper looks at those factors which led the Latrobe Valley Community Forum to .focus on shortcomings of the consultative process. that existed around the 1980 period, and the limitations on the ability of the community of the Latrobe Valley to have input to the factors affecting their quality of life. Through a review of the Yallourn East Field Extension project it seeks to demonstrate the changes that have occurred and some of the shortcomings still existant in the consultation process.

Reliability is also most important, and indeed is fundamental, to successful coal exporting.Coal preparation, blending, distribution, marketing and utilisation are areas of the coal industry in which reliability can be critical to coal exporting. The intention of this paper is to give a review of the present status of lignite mining in the so-called Gulf States in the United States of America, namely Texas, Arkansas, Mis- sissippi and Louisiana. Selective oxidation of minerals was used in this study to separate by flotation the copper sulphide minerals of chalcocite, covellite and chalcopyrite from the arsenic copper sulphide minerals of enargite and tennantite. It was found that a satisfactory separation of these minerals was only possible after selective oxidation of their surfaces in slightly acidic pH conditions, or after oxidation and selective dissolution of the surface oxidation products with a complexant in basic pH conditions.

It is with great pleasure that I accepted the invitation to make a closing address to this Congress particularly as it is here in Brisbane. The main duty of the International Mine Ventilation Congress Committee and in particular the chairman is to ensure that these conferences are held every four to five years in suitable locations. My main role over the last four years has been to promote holding this Congress in Australia and it was a great relief when the Queensland team and the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy accepted the challenge in November 1986.

Major underground gold mine developments are not common in Australia especially when they are totally owned and hence financed by a relatively small public company. Ballarat Goldfields Limited with its Ballarat East Project is such a company. Financing a $20m underground exploratory access programme in a poor economic climate places added importance on the quality of the project. Critical factors such as ore reserves, environment, planning and the development program are of immense importance in devising and implementing a workable finance package that satisfies both the shareholder and the project's needs.

The careful selection of plant species is of paramount importance to the success of any attempts to re- vegetate these sites. The successful operation of diesel equipment underground does not entirely depend on selection of robust, reliable, easily maintained machines. Results are also heavily influenced by the following factors: Design and condition of the operating area. Skill of operators. Correct maintenance facilities. Experience, skill and initiative of maintenance personnel. If the mine layout does not allow access to a central workshop area, the effect of any shortcomings will be magnified. The best results will only be obtained by close co-operation between mining and maintenance departments right from the initial planning stages.

The expense of mine environmental and planning process approvals is a fundamental and proper part of mine planning and feasibility costs. It is not a cost that should be the subject of challenge nor is it a cost that should be avoided. However the additional process approval costs incurred by bureaucratic delay, process duplication and administrative incompetence is a scandal and a deterrent to investment.

There have been many changes in the Australian mining industry during the last 30 years. One of the most dramatic changes, from a geological perspective, is the reduction of in-house geological staffing and an ever increasing reliance on contract and consulting services. As a result, there has been a change in the way geological information is generated, managed and retained within the industry. This paper describes the changes that have taken place in the industry, provides two case studies of how companies manage their geological Intellectual Property and reviews some of the issues associated with management of in-house and outsourced geology services.

The Century zinc deposit is located in Queensland approximately 250 kilometres north north-west of the provincial city of Mount Isa, on Lawn Hill Station and within 150 kilometres of the Gulf of Carpentaria.ThefirstMining Lease in this area was pegged in 1887. The Silver King vein is the largestvein deposit in the area and has produced lead and zinc, in addition to 74,000 ounces of silver during its history.A total of forty three veins containing silver, lead and zinc are now known, all of which were discovered by prospectors within 10 years of the first vein being recognized.

Arm Royalty systems of different types are used throughout Australia by both state and federal governments to raise revenue and thus facilitate in the proper distribution of mineral wealth. Royalty systems should be neutral and equitable but by their very nature these objectives are impossible to obtain. Because of the individual nature of mineral deposits, in particular variable cutoff grades and tonnages, governments should be aware of the possible trade off between short and long term gains of the particular royalty scheme introduced.

Smelting at Mount Morgan started in 1906 with blast furnaces which were replaced by a reverberatory furnace in 1939. The second reverberatory, commissioned in 1944, was replaced by a copper flash smelter in 1972. Flotation concentrates, dried to 0.05 per cent moisture, were oxidised under accurately controlled conditions and produced 45 per cent Cu matte and a slag in the flash smelter. The matte was converted to blister copper and the slag was slowly cooled before grinding and retreatment in a flotation concentrator.

One major aim of the operation of Aberfoyle's matte fuming pilot plant was to assess refractories performance in the process working vessel, a SIROSMELT furnace. High wear rates were expected and whether these could be tolerated was an important question. During operations a range of refractory types was evaluated in both insulated and water cooled furnace designs. Furnace operations enabled lining wear measurements to be made. Results confirm that existing technology can solve any expected refractory problems. Design aspects that should be included in commercial furnaces are shown.
