INTRODUCTION This discusses some of the economic risks and uncertainties which face any company investing in new mineral ventures. These differ mainly in degree rather than kind from other large capital intensive projects, except that economic risks are compounded with technical risks. Mines face a wide variety of physical risks, and in addition the ore reserves may not prove as ample, nor as amenable to treatment as the feasibility studies indicate. On the economic front, mineral projects are subject to risks of fluctuating prices and sales volumes, no matter where they are located, or how they are financed. Typically, they are heavy users of capital compared with their owners' internally generated funds. Long term debt of various types is still the favoured form of finance. A project's currencies and cost often differ from each other and from those of the parent company. Facing up to the various risks associated with fluctuating and uncertain revenues, interest rates and exchange rates are amongst the hardest tasks for natural resource companies. ATTITUDES TO THE MINING INDUSTRY Some have questioned whether the game itself is now worth playing. They have argued that the mining industry's mediocre rewards in the past decade have been insufficient, compared with the risks involved. They can see no prospect of dramatic improvement in the next decade. Demand is highly cyclical and tends to grow less rapidly than economic activity, as a whole. Barriers to entry are low in most mineral markets, but impediments to exit can be substantial. Exit is especially problematic in those minerals where there are large state shareholdings and/or where less developed countries are major producers. The consequence is claimed to be an endemic tendency to excess capacity, and prices barely adequate to cover marginal cash costs. Many of the petroleum companies that moved into mining with such high expectations in the late 1970s have retreated, often bearing the scars of heavy losses. Individual shareholders, taken collectively, place low valuations on their investments in mining companies. The price/earnings ratios of the major mineral producing companies are low compared with their historical averages and with those of other industries. Onoda Cement Co., Tsukumi is one of the largest limestone producer in Japan. From mines called Suisho and Ganji, it supplies limestone for cement plant, lime manufacture, iron and steel industries and for many purposes. The Suisho mine is highly productive, though it's operations are governed by the utmost regard for its impact on the surrounding environment. However, it became difficult to meet additional expanding demand and to assure continuity of high rate production. Present production rate 1s 6 million tons per year. The Ganji mine, some 2 km south west of the Suisho mine, began first-stage development In mid- 1973 and in january I976 started production. The capacity of major facilities is 9 million tons per year. Full production is predicted in 1979. Mining and milling methods of these mines under strict environmental considerations are discussed.

THE following scanty notes on the Roumanian oil-region may serve as an introduction to more detailed future study and description. The Roumauian oil-belt, follows the outer edge of the sweep of the Carpathian Mountains, and may, in a broad sense, be regarded as a prolongation of the Galician belt. It is distributed over a tract of country from 300 to 400 miles in length, with a width of from 15 to 20 miles, and is believed to cover an area of at least 20,000 hectares (59,420 acres). The Government claims that 16,000 to 17,000 hectares of its land is petroliferous. The primary deposits of petroleum are considered to be in the Padeogene (Oligocene) and the Neogene (the salines of the Miocene) formations. Most of the other repositories, especially those of Muntenie, are only secondary, the petroleum there having been introduced by the orogeneric movements which raised the Carpathian Mountains. The oil-field has been divided by the Roumanian survey into two regions, the Flysch and the Sub-Carpathian, as is shown in the accompanying sketch-map, Fig. 1.(p. 518). So far as is yet, known, practically all the seepages and .productive pits and wells are situated oil anticlinals. Those which outcrop in the Flysch region. (called Paleogene anticlinals), as indicated in the sketch-map, Fig. 1, are : Solontz, Middle Oligocene; Moineshti, Moineshti and Tagu-Ocna-beds of the Eocene.

IN welcoming the attending members of the Ameri-can Zinc Institute's Ninth Annual Meeting to St. Louis on April 18, the president of the Chamber of Commerce stressed the notable progress that had been made during nine years, marked by many price de-pressions and internal dissensions, while controversies between miners and smeltermen threatened to wreck the organization, prices dropped, and consumption grew languid for want of organized publicity and research. The reports and recommendations of Percy B. Butler, chairman of the Adjustment Committee, and F. C. Wallower, chairman of the Galvanizing Committee, might well be adopted as the institute's objectives. In reply to the speeches of welcome to St. Louis, Arthur Thacher reminded the delegates that the cor-ner stone of progress in the mineral industries was laid by the formation of the American Institute of Mining Engineers in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., in 1871, and the dedication of that organization to the exchange of ideas and methods of the winning of metals and non-metals from their crude state. The activities of the American Zinc Institute constitute, he said, a valuable phase of that work. Mr. Thacher forecast the treat-ment of 1 per cent zinc ore. After the reading of the report of the board of directors, in which Scott Turner and Louis Boschern were named as honorary members of the institute, a survey of world zinc conditions by A. J. M. Sharpe of London was presented. He held pres-ent conditions in China responsible for much of the present depression in zinc. World stocks on, April 1, 1927, were estimated as 52,900 metric tons. Adolph Boldt's paper on "Solidarity in Industry" was followed by a survey of the Tri-State district by Otto Ruhl, who emphasized the importance to the dis-trict of the organization of the Tri-State section of the A.I.M.E., which already has 135 members and asso¬ciates. He also mentioned .that flotation in the Tri¬State field is adding 1500 tons of concentrate to the weekly production. "Mining Economics" was the subject of Julian D. Conover, secretary of the Tri-State Zinc and Lead Ore Producers Association. He gave a detailed report on the costs of mining and milling in the district.

Ti6NileSi7)G is known to be cubic, with 116 atoms in the unit cell. In the present work four new G sili-cides were found with other transition elements and five G germanides. The titanium-group elements are very efficient in forming G phases. The vanadium -group elements are somewhat less efficient, and the chromium-group elements do not form any. Cobalt can replace nickel in most cases, but it is somewhat less efficient. Iron was not found to form any G phases. Germanium is somewhat less efficient than silicon. The (TiNiSi)E phase has been previously identified by Westbrook. However, its crystal structure has not been determined. In the present work the E phase was found to have an orthorhombic unit cell with lattice parameters a. = 7.02, bo = 5.18, co = 11.11A. A large number of other E phases were found at the same stoicheometric ratio in ternary systems of silicon and germanium with transition elements. Lattice parameters similar to those for TiNiSi were measured. The number of atoms per unit cell is estimated at 30 to 36. The vanadium-group elements are somewhat more efficient in forming the E phase than the titanium-group elements. Chromium-group elements were not found to form any E phases. Cobalt is somewhat less efficient than nickel, and iron is less efficient than cobalt. Germanium is not as efficient as silicon. ThE ternary silicide designated as G-phase was first identified by Beattie and versnyder1 and by Beattie and Hagel2 at the approximate composition TiNi2Si. Westbrook et al.' gave the composition as Ti2Ni7Sis. This phase was found to be fcc with a. = 11.201A and 116 atoms per unit cell. Beattie4 and more recently independently Hladishevskii, Kripyakevich, Kuzma, and Teslyuk5 were able to show that this structure is isotypic with MgeSi7CuLe and Th6Mn23. The latter structures had been determined by Florio, Rundle, and snow,' Nagorsen and Witte,7 and Bergman and Waugh.8 According to the crystal structure, Ti8Ni6Si7 may be considered as the ideal composition. The Russian investigators5 identified six additional ternary phases isotypic with Ti6Ni6Si7, in which titanium is replaced by Mn, V, Nb, Ta, Zr, and Hf, and one, namely MneNil6Ge7, in which germanium replaces silicon. They also found that Cr6Ni6Si7, which does not occur as a ternary phase, can be stabilized by replacing 1 at. pct of the Cr by V, Mn, or Ta. Another ternary silicide was found by Westbrook et al.3 at the composition TiNiSi, and it was designated by them as the E phase. The crystal structure of this phase has not been deter-

THE results are presented of an investigation to discover the fundamental atomic conditions existing in Corson's high-copper alloys hardenable by means of silicide solution and reprecipitation. The study attracted the writer because it offered a very convenient example of the general type of hardenable alloys exemplified by duralumin, Sykes' iron-tungsten and iron-molybdenum alloys and the hardenable lead antimony. SUMMARY OF RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS In brief, the investigation shows that very perfect crystallinity exists in the solid solutions prepared at high temperature to contain as much dissolved silicide as possible. The lattice parameter of copper is altered very little by the amount of cobalt, nickel or chromium, and silicon dissolved. The hardening by drawing at a temperature to initiate precipitation of excess silicon and metal produces a remarkable change in the atomistics of the solid solution. The old perfection of crystallinity in the solid solution is destroyed and the new atomic spacings are of variable magnitude even in one grain, and a condition in a measure resembling that found in martensite is observed. Were no particles whatever precipitated by the drawing action, still ample causes for hardness would be in evidence in the solid solution alone. The lack of plane continuity in the crystal grains would oppose slip in a very effective manner. Complete annealing restores the crystalline perfection in large measure. In these alloys even the most sensitive methods failed to reveal the characteristic pattern of the silicide precipitated by the anneal, but this was largely to be expected as the amount is relatively small.

Phosphosilicate glass films were formed, by reacting gaseous P2O5 with SiO2, over a large range of temperature (800° to 1200°C) and gas phase composition (nearly two orders of magnitude of effective P2Ospressure). The film compositions generally corresponded with the liquidus curve, delineating the maximum solubility of the tridymite Phase of SiO 2 in phosphosilicate liquid solution at the temperature of film formation. It is shown that the P2O5 concentration of the phosphosilicate liquid film tends to decrease by reaction with the underlying SiO 2 layer until the liquidus curve is reached. The validity of the thermodynamic argument used in this explanation is supported by the results of a determination of the composition of borosili-cute films, prepared by reacting gaseous B2O3 with SiO2 at different temperatures. The kinetics of phosphosilicate film formation were described by a model predicated on a steady-state diffusion of P2O5 through the film. UNDERSTANDING of the processes leading to formation of phosphosilicate and borosilicate glasses is of great importance for producing passivating layers on FET devices. Passivating films with optimum characteristics are preferably formed in a separate step, independent of the doping of the semiconductor.' The results of an investigation carried out to gain improved insight into the mechanism of glass formation are presented in this paper. It would be expected that application of the known Pz05-Si02 and B 2 O 3-SiO2 phase diagrams should be useful in extending understanding of the glass-forming processes. However, the question of the propriety of treating thermally grown SiO2 in these binary oxide systems by the methods of equilibrium thermodynamics must be considered when this application is attempted. Although Sah et a1.' and Allen et al. 3 investigated the kinetics of formation of phosphosilicate glass (PSG), they failed to adequately relate their diffusion models to the occurrence of experimentally observed phases in the PSG/SiO 2/Si system. Horuichi and yamaguchi4 investigated the diffusion of boron through an oxide layer and described their results in terms of a model similar to that of Sah and coworkers. More recently, Kooi 5 and Snow and Deal6 reported the compositions of PSG films formed by depositing P2 O 5 onto SiO2. These compositions apparently coincide with those at the liquidus curve delineating the maximum solubility of crystalline SiO2 in phosphosilicate liquid solutions. These authors did not discuss the thermodynamic implications of their results on the structure of thermally grown SiO2 films. The structure of thermally grown Sio2 films and that of vitreous silica are generally thought to be quite similar. Since the solubility of a substance depends on its structure, it is relevant that the solubility of vitreous silica in water7 is highly reproducible, like the solubility of thermally grown SiOz in phosphosilicate liquid. Furthermore, the vitreous silica-water system appears to be in true thermodynamic equilibrium (viz., the same solubility value can be approached from both supersaturated and under-saturated solutions). Sosman7 suggested that a type of two-dimensional lattice may form at the silica/solution interface, resulting in the observed solubility behavior that is characteristic of a crystalline solid. An alternative explanation may be that vitreous silica has a microcrystalline grain structure. Other investigators have suggested that vitreous silica has essentially the structure of B cristobalite,' or is composed of microcrystals of p tridymite or cristobalite, or a mixture of both. Presumably the grain size would be sufficiently large to minimize any appreciable contribution of the grain boundaries to the solubility of the crystalline matrix. The present investigation was carried out to clarify the significance of the boundaries in the Pa,-SiO, and B2O3-SiO2 Systems in determining PSG and BSG (borosilicate) film compositions. Furthermore, the kinetic data for PSG film formation were extended, using a wider range of formation parameters than were previously reported. One model describing the kinetics of film formation will be presented that is compatible with the thermodynamics of the Pa5-Si02 system. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Glass Film Preparation. SiO2 films (1000 to 8000A thick) were obtained by oxidation of silicon substrates in dry O2 at 1100°C. PSG and BSG films were prepared by exposing these layers to gaseous oxides obtained by reacting high-purity POC13 and BBr3, respectively, with O2. With the increasing importance of clay in drilling operations which demand more precise and exacting control over its behavior, there has come the realization that most of our present methods of control over many of its important properties still represent more of an art than a science. Such a situation with respect to a material of such industrial significance is unfortunate, and naturally many investigations have been conducted to improve our knowledge. In general, these investigations have revealed the complex nature of clay behavior and while sometimes they may not have seemed to contribute directly to a solution of the field operator's problems they have been of inestimable importance in bringing to light the broad fundamental scientific principles upon which must be based any effective working theory correlating the known facts of clay behavior and predicting profitable new lines of attack for its improvement. Major Facts Concerning Behavior of Clays In the study of clays, as in that of most other colloidal materials, it has been impossible to make progress by the study of isolated facts. On the other hand, analysis of large groups of facts, many of which seem at first completely unrelated, can lead to a deeper insight into the structure of clays and the mechanism of their behavior. It will be well to list the major facts on which the analysis here presented is based, starting with those that have emerged repeatedly from past investigations and which thereby constitute an impregnable foundation upon which must rest any comprehensive theory of clay behavior: 1. Clays consist of hydrated aluminosilicates of extremely fine and variable particle size. 2. Suspended in water, clays exhibit variable degrees of swelling, depending upon their origin and upon the chemical and colloidal nature of any other substances present. The magnitude of the swelling is a direct indication of the extent to which the clay has become dispersed.

THE ideal fuel for burning ceramic wares is the one that, among other characteristics, has little or no sulfur. For that reason wood was long considered the most desirable fuel but its high cost has practically eliminated its used except in regions where it is very abundant or other circumstances warrant its choice. The fuels commonly employed are natural and producer gas, oil, and coal. The last named is undoubtedly the most important, not only in this country but abroad. Occasionally anthracite is used but the larger part is bituminous. The quality of the coal used depends on the kind and the value of the products being manufactured. For some materials, such as common brick, hollow block, etc., the quality of the coal is of less importance than in the manufacture of polychrome terra cotta, pottery, porcelain, etc. It is obvious that in burning clays that contain notable amounts of pyrite, marcasite or gypsum, as is the case with many common clays, the sulfur content of the fuel is of much less importance. The permissible amount of sulfur in the coal used will depend on the kind of product being manufactured. The Trixie mine is located in the East Tintic Mining District. Since production began in 1970 over 450 000 tonnes of ore grading 239 grams of silver, 6.9 grams of gold, and 1.2% Cu have been mined from veins in Cambrian Tintic Quartzite. Detailed geologic mapping and extensive sampling are essential for compiling the data base required for efficiently developing and mining known reserves as well as planning exploration and development work. Although the basic techniques used by the geology group at the Trixie were developed many years ago, the reduced activity in underground precious metal mining in the U.S. have made these techniques less familiar to many presently active geologists. The increased activity in precious metals search and exploration again offer cause for the application of these techniques as a prerequisite to efficient exploration, development and production.

Various industrial minerals that are traded internationally receive support from governments, enabling these materials to be more competitive. The role of government in encouraging nonmetallics exports ranges from the ownership of an integrated mining company to partial or selective government ownership, to the sponsorship of exporter organizations. In certain cases, regional governments have a direct stake in the industrial minerals industry. This paper assesses the commercial impact of these involvements.

A useful accelerated weathering test should be capable of placing any series of metals quantitatively in the same order of endurance as that noted under a particular set of actual exposure conditions. The development of such a test must necessarily depend to a considerable extent upon data obtained from a wide variety of exposures. This paper offers preliminary data from exposure tests on nine metals placed in 11 locations in the Lehigh Valley, within a radius of 20 miles from Palmerton. The exposure conditions vary from a severe industrial atmosphere to a pure rural atmosphere. The data are offered as evidence of the necessity for the identification and evaluation of the variables of corrosion and as illustration of some of the variations to be considered in the development of a useful accelerated test. It is quite clear, from this evidence, that a useful accelerated test must be versatile to the extent of showing the probable variations of corrosion resulting from differences in atmosphere as well as from differences in the metals. The paper is presented solely with the object of pointing out the wide variations in relative merits of several common metals in resisting corrosion and without any thought of initiating controversy regarding the merits of particular metals. For this reason the metals are designated only by symbols in the tables and no key is given to these symbols. Test Procedure Specimens, 4 by 6 in., were cut to accurate dimensions from each of the following metals or alloys: aluminum, ascoloy, copper, copper steel, galvanized iron, and zinc. Additional grades of these metals bring the total to nine types. Since it was impossible to obtain the required number of copper-steel specimens having equal surface conditions of rust and scale, it was thought advisable to pickle these specimens in a hot solution of 10 per cent. sulfuric acid. All other specimens were carefully cleaned in ether and alcohol and weighed just prior to exposure. Four specimens of each type of metal were mounted on a test rack by means of porcelain insulators. JOHN ALEXANDER MATHEWS, who has been awarded the Hunt Gold Medal for his paper "Austenite and Austenitic Steels," which was pre-sented before the Institute as the Howe Memorial Lec-ture for 1925, was born at Washington, Pa., on May 20, 1872. His interest in metallurgy may be said to be hereditary, as three generations of his Colonial forbears were gold and silversmiths. After graduating from Washington and Jefferson College in 1893, he entered Columbia University where he was successively assistant in assaying and tutor in chemistry and at the same time continued his work for the Ph. D. degree, which he received in 1898. He was at one time awarded a fellowship in chemistry, and for 1900, 1901 and 1902 re- ceived the award of the Ear- nard Fellowship for the En- couragement of Scientific Re- search, spending one year at the Royal School of Mines, in London, studying alloys un- der Sir William Roberts- Austen, another at Columbia under Henry M. Howe, and the third at Sanderson Bros. works, Syracuse. While in England, he was one of the first three, recipients of an Andrew Carnegie Scholarship of the Iron and Steel Institute of Great Britain, which later awarded him the first Car- negie Gold Medal for Re-search. He entered the employ of the Crucible Steel Company of America, at its Sanderson works, in 1902, as metal- lurgist and soon became as- sistant manager. In 1908 he ent to the Halcomb Steel JOHN A. Co., Syracuse, N. Y., as superintendent, later becoming general manager and president in 1915. In 1920 he returned to Crucible Steel Co. of America, first as vice-president and later became president from 1921 to 1924. He retired from the presidency in 1924, made a metal-lurgical trip to Europe, and returned as vice-president to resume his "favorite pastime" of directing research and development work in the production of special tool and alloy steels. He has taken a particular interest in the development of austenitic steels which, in addition to an extraordinary resistance to corrosive attack, show under fatigue, torsion, and tension tests superior qualities as compared with the ordinary engineering steels, and at elevated temperatures show remarkable resistance to oxidation and scaling and several times the strength of many of the complex alloys that are not of the natural austenitic variety.

The bee alloys of the terminal solid solution of rhenium in niobium were investigated by X-ray diffraclion methods. The analysis of the broadening of the powder pattern peaks from the niobium-rich alloys, cold-worked by filing, showed evidence for faulting on (211) planes. The alloys with larger rhenium concentrations were brittle, and fractured when filed. The analysis of the shapes of the diffraction profiles from powders produced by hammering with steel plates) of these brittle alloys indicated that the broadening was due predominantly to platelets bounded by clibe planes. This result was consistent with the Laue patterns from single-cleazlage facets which showed evidence for clearage fracture on {100} planes. The influence of faulting on the mechanical properties of face-centered cubic (fcc) metals and alloys, i.e., how faulting affects the various dislocation configurations in fcc metals, is well-known.' The important question is whether or not faulting occurs in body-centered cubic (bcc) metals and alloys, and, furthermore, if faulting does occur, to what extent it affects the mechanical properties. Theoretical calculations indicate that the stacking-fault energy is rather high in most bcc metals.2 The results of sev-eral studies using transmission electron microscopy have indicated that faults are present in well-annealed and lightly deformed bcc metals and alloys, such as tungsten,3 vanadium,4 and Mo-Re alloys.5,6 These faults, as have been observed, may be stabilized by the presence of interstitial (C,N,O) atom segregation to the extended dislocations. In addition, there is considerable X-ray diffraction evidence for faulting in bee metals,7-8 using the same techniques that were successful for the study of faulting in fee metals and alloys.7 This X-ray diffraction method is currently the only technique applicable for the investigation of faulting in metals with high stacking fault energies, i.e., when severe amounts of deformation are required to produce sufficient amounts of faulting to be detectable by X-rays. The thinned films of heavily deformed metals will become opaque in the electron microscope due to the high dislocation densities present. In a previous investigation of faulting8 in bee metals of group Vb and VIb, the authors observed that niobium was ductile when filed at room temperature, and showed the highest density of faults on the (112) family of planes. A niobium-base alloy system was therefore chosen to study the effect of alloying on the occurrence of faults in a bcc alloy. There is a large range of terminal solid solubility of rhenium in the alloys of the bee refractory metals. All of the Group VIb-rhenium alloys, i.e., Cr-Re, Mo-Re, and W-Re, exhibit solid solution hardening without loss of ductility.9 In fact, the ductility reaches a maximum for alloys with compositions near to the limits of solubility. This enhanced ductility has been attributed to the lowering of the stacking-fault energy in the alloy; i.e., the increased amounts of twinning provide an additional mode of deformation, resulting in the observed high ductility.' Because of this demonstrated effect of rhenium in bee alloys, it was decided to study a series of alloys of Nb-Re. Using the same X-ray diffraction methods as described in the previous investigation,' one is able to identify the possible causes of broadening of the powder pattern peaks, e.q., particle size, microstrains, stacking faults, and/or twin faults. The separation of these various contributions to the measured peak shape is accomplished by the Warren-Averbach analysis.7 I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A series of seven bee solid solution alloys containing from 2.5 to 21.5 at. pct Re (remainder niobium) were prepared at the General Electric Research Laboratory. Buttons, weighing 25 g, were alloyed from electron-beam-melted niobium chips and random rhenium sheet by arc melting in a water-cooled copper crucible, under an argon atmosphere. The buttons were inverted and completely remelted to promote homogenization. The nominal alloy compositions are listed in Table I. Samples of the cold-worked alloys were obtained by filing to produce a powder for the X-ray study. Alloys too brittle to be filed were hammered with steel plates. The resultant filings or brittle impactings were screened through 150-mesh classifiers and compacted to the required shape for the diffractometer holder. The X-ray diffraction peaks were automatically recorded by fixed time counting at uniform 28 intervals, or by continuous registration with a ratemeter. In all cases, the (110)-(220) and (200)-(400) pairs of peaks and the (211), (310), (222), and (321) reflections were measured on a GE-XRD5 diffractometer using CuKa radiation with nickel filter or MoKct radiation and a LiF monochromator in the diffracted beam. The first part of the data reduction, completed with the aid of a series of programmed computations,10 was the analytical resolution of the Kol component of the diffraction profile. SAFETY in coal mining received especial attention by the public in general and the mining industry in particular during 1940 and early in 1941, owing primarily to the six explosion disasters which occurred last year with a total of 276 fatalities. This was the largest number of fatalities due to explosions in bituminous coal mines since 1928, when 347 lives were so lost. But facilities due to explosions have had a definite decreasing trend since 1907, in spite of bad years such as 1917, 1924, 1932, 1937, and 1940. Although the upswing in explosion fatalities in 1940 is lamented by all, none will admit it represents a trend and it will serve mainly to stimulate ways and means of further reducing these disasters.

The application of other than mechanical methods to the study of the mechanical-physical properties of metals has become in the last few years a topic of investigation of ever-increasing interest, both from the theoretical standpoint and from that of the engineer and constructor. Besides the investigations which have been made of the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic metals, in their relation to the mechanical properties of these metals, which will be discussed more in detail below, there have been made studies of other phenomena in the same relation, and methods for the mechanical testing 'of metals have even been suggested; for example, the microscopic method of Tammann,' and the thermo-electric method of Turnera for determining elastic limits. The application of all such methods, which are based upon the dependence of some physical, crystallographic, or possibly chemical property, upon the mechanical state of the metal, must be preceded by close and careful correlation of these various "test" properties with the known mechanical state of the different metals or materials. It is with this view that the present work, as well as that of many previous investigators of, what may be termed in the interests of brevity, the mechanical-magnetic properties of ferromagnetic materials of construction, has been done. Previous Investigations of Mechanical Magnetic Properties The effect of mechanical stresses and of deformation, elastic or otherwise, oil the magnetic qualities of iron, steel, and other metals, has been studied by a number of investigators from the time of Joule (1841) to the present. It will, however, for the present purpose be sufficient to give an account only of the principal results obtained in the course of these investigations. It would be extremely difficult and unfair to compare the United States to Australia when wondering about which of the two countries offers the best opportunities for running a mining operation. However, if somebody would ask "Where is the best place to mine outside the US?"-I'd answer without reservations: Australia. Some of my Australian mining friends will disagree with me for my giving their country such a high rating. And they'll probably accuse me of being an optimist by telling me, as one of them did, that "the difference between an optimist and a pessimist is that the pessimist is better informed."
