Exploration offices are in Colorado, Nevada, Alaska, and Perth, Australia. We currently operate two gold mines in Nevada and a large underground trona mine and soda ash processing plant in Wyoming. The latter has a capacity of 907 000 tonnes per year of soda ash and is the subject of my presentation today.

Exploration for ore deposits in southeastern Missouri in the 1950's resulted in the important discovery of lead, zinc, copper and silver in 1955. Further discoveries in the area led to the naming of the Viburnum trend. It has sometimes been referred to as the "New Lead belt" to distinguish it from older lead-producing areas to the east. As presently developed, the "trend" is 35 miles long, running north and south about 50 miles west of the Lead belt. Galena (lead) is the principal ore mined, with lesser quantities of sphalerite (zinc), chalcopyrite (copper) and silver recovered as economic by-products. The ore body is as much as 140 feet thick and 1,200 feet wide, and is found in the Bonneterre Dolomite (Upper Cambrian) at depths ranging from 700 to 1,200 feet. Since its discovery many companies have engaged in exploration and several major companies have developed new mines and constructed mills and a smelter in the area. The first mine in the Viburnum trend came on stream in 1960, but as more mines came on stream and others reached capacity, lead production increased to the point that the Southeast Missouri Lead district produced 432,576 tons of lead in 1970 to become the world's largest lead-producing region (Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources, 1971). The Viburnum trend area with its rolling, heavily forested hills and numerous clear running streams is in the Clark National Forest of the Missouri Ozarks. Until the recent development of its mineral resources, the area was sparsely populated and nearly unmarked by the activities of man. This paper reviews a study conducted for Australian Coal Research Limited (ACARP) to assist Anglo-American operations with better understanding of coal burst mechanics and control based on U.S. practical experience, investigations, and inspections in three major U.S. coalfields over the past 45 years. The study examined both nonviolent and burst-prone case studies to identify contributing risk factors and addressed failure mechanisms for major U.S. coalfields in Utah, Colorado, and Kentucky, which have diverse characteristics. To investigate the mechanics of coal burst, a multipronged approach is used. First, field measurements in three mines from East Mountain, Utah, are complemented with finite-difference stress analyses to address the importance of horizontal stress in coal pillar mechanics of violent failure. Second, the computational procedures for estimating seismicity resulting from slip along geological discontinuities are reviewed, as these measurements point to seismicity being the trigger mechanism for violent failure of marginally stable structures. This joint-slip seismicity mechanism is in agreement with the more recentimproved re-examination of mining-induced seismicity (MIS) data from the Crandall Canyon Mine, Utah by University of Utah (UOU). Third, a hybrid statistical-analytical methodology is applied for identifying significant factors affecting coal burst. It utilizes data from 30 case studies including those from Utah, Colorado, Kentucky, and other eastern U.S. mines. The statistical approach reinforces field measurements and points to strata rigidity, joint spacings, and horizontal stress field as significant factors affecting damage resulting from coal bursts. This provides practical capabilities for identifying operations of higher risk using a rigidity-cavability variable. Overall, the study provides valuable insights into the mechanics and risk factors associated with coal bursts in major U.S. coalfields. By utilizing a multipronged approach that incorporates both field measurements and statistical-analytical calculations, the study offers practical capabilities for identifying operations of higher risk and improving coal burst control.

Strip mining has played a key role in the production of coal used to produce energy in this country. About 56 percent of the 1.3 x 106 hectares (3.2 x 106 acres) that had been disturbed by surface mining as of 1965 can be attributed to stripping (Udall, 1967). The runoff from these stripped areas is usually heavily polluted with high concentrations of total dissolved solids, iron, aluminum, manganese, sulfates, and has low pH values with high acidity. Another problem of a most serious nature in our large cities is the volume of treated solids to be disposed of after sewage treatment. Chicago is presently producing about 664 metric tons/day of dry weight solids (Horn and Earles, 1968). Disposal methods most commonly used include lagooning, incineration, and landfilling. The high cost of land in an urban community is prohibitive of lagoon storage. Incineration and landfill disposal create air and water pollution problems. Many countries including Australia, England and Israel have long realized the value of sewage solids if they are recycled back to the land. In the United States, the value of such solids in reclaiming strip mined land has been recognized by relatively few people. This paper is concerned with the use of anaerobically digested sludge to reclaim strip mined land.

The quality of water in mine pit lakes depends in part on the physical limnology, including such factors as thermal and chemical stratification, turnover and the development of anoxic conditions with depth. Limnologic data collected from four existing pit lakes in Montana and Saskatchewan indicate that pit lakes develop a thermocline (temperature stratification) in the upper 10 to 30 m (33 to 100 ft) of the water column. Two o f the pit lakes, 26- and 55-m (85 and 180 ft) deep, undergo seasonal turnover of the entire water column, whereas two deeper, pit lakes, 110 and 240-m (360- to 790 ft) deep, undergo seasonal turnover of only the upper portion of the water column. In the deeper lakes, seasonal mixing does not extend through the entire water column, and a distinct chemocline develops with depth.

Subsidence planning and control must be an integral part of mine design in order to minimize the economic impact of underground mining on the surface. Pre-calculation of surface deformations which may cause damage to surface structures must be performed and dam-age criteria must be established, if the response of structures to such movements is to be determined and the extent of damages to be assessed. In this paper the Surface Deformation Prediction System (S.D.P.S.), which can be used to predict accurately the vertical and horizontal parameters of surface movements due to underground mining, is discussed. The Subsidence Response Modeling Program (S.R.M.P.). which can be applied to evaluate the response of buildings to subsidence-induced movements, is also reviewed. Finally, an example is presented demonstrating the applicability of these techniques for subsidence design and control.

The kinetics of gold-bromide loading onto activated carbon has been investigated in a batch stirred reactor. The amount of gold adsorbed by the carbon was correlated with time based on a second-order equation. The rate constant for gold-bromide species onto activated carbon ranged from 0.27 to 1.2 x 10-3 (kg/t)-l(min)-l from a solution containing 25 ppm of Au, with 0.8 g carbon per liter of solution at 30° C. The equilibrium saturation capacity (Q.) was 36±3.0 kg/t from the same system. The rate of loading increased with decreasing particle size, decreasing pH, increasing temperature, and decreasing concentration of gold in solution. The calculated activation energy E. was 8.8 kcal/mole, significantly higher than those reported for physical adsorption. The equilibrium saturation capacity (Q.) increased with increasing concentration of gold in solution, but was independent of other variables such as temperature, agitation speed, particle size and pH. These rate constants and equilibrium saturation capacity for the gold-bromide species are higher than those reported for the gold-cyanide systems.

Ion exchangers can be naturally occurring or synthetic; the majority of ion exchange materials in use today are synthetic resins based upon organic polymers such as polystyrene or methacrylate. Into more modern times the use of ion exchange for metal recovery was first proposed for the recovery of gold using zeolites in 1909.4 In 1939 copper was being recovered from the manufacturing of Rayon using ion exchange5 a development that continued applicability through to current times in the production/recovery of copper and nickel in ammoniacal leach processes. In early 1949 researchers at the Rohm & Haas Company discovered that hexavalent uranium existed as an ionic complex in sulfuric acid leach liquors, and that quaternary ammonium anion exchange resins exhibited a high selectivity for this ionic species6 The first commercial application of this technology went on-stream in October 1952 at the West Rand Consolidated Mines, Ltd operation in South Africa. 7 Ion Exchange has been applied for the recovery and purification of a range of metals;8 ? "Mining used to be a business primarily focused on the technical aspects of getting valuable ore out of the ground and extracting the minerals efficiently. Without denying the importance of these skills, a narrow focus on technical issues is no longer enough to guarantee success when it comes to exploiting rare earth element (REE) deposits. Molycorp failed to enter the global REE market in a successful manner, while none of the many REE exploration projects has turned into an active mine so far and none is expected to commence operations in the near future. Accordingly, the world of REE is far more complex compared to other commodities. This paper looks into the REE industry to identify the factors that can connect potential U.S. REE mines to the market. The ability to break free from past thinking and become future-focused is a key driver. Mining of REE is pointless without a corresponding value-adding chain, while developing a value chain without first establishing an uninterruptible source of REE is also senseless. The mining sector must be based on the REE value chain and vice versa, along with the establishment of a market channel for the REE products that come out of the mine. INTRODUCTION It has been seven years since rare earth elements became the subjects of front-page headlines. It was when the controversial Chinese export policy for these critical commodities was epitomised in a maritime border dispute with Japan in September 2010 that resulted in the big REE crisis and price spike of 2011 (Barakos et al, 2016c; Mancheri, 2015). The world was dismayed, especially in REE-importing countries, such as the United States that was and is still totally dependent on Chinese production and exports (Barakos et al, 2016c; Kennedy, 2015). The short-lived alarm initiated a treasure hunt by way of exploration for REE deposits all over the world. The continuously growing demand on the one hand and the Chinese sovereignty of the REE-market on the other, led the rest of the world to explore their own REE resources. In just a few years, more than 400 projects were initiated to explore REE deposits outside of China (ERECON, 2015; Goodenough, 2016). The prices of REE, however, dropped rapidly and at the moment of writing this paper are in 6-year lows, at the level of the price average before the 2011 crisis (Barakos, 2017). The viability of even major established producers is being challenged, not to mention the development prospects of potential REE-market entrants (Barakos et al, 2016b; Rollat et al, 2016). Production cutbacks and industry consolidation in China impel REE market experts to forecast that prices have already reached their lowest point and have nowhere to go but up (Adamas, 2015; Roskill 2015). Yet, expectations for increased REE prices are limited and drastic changes are unlikely to happen in the near future, as there is still excess supply in the overall REE market (Barakos, 2017). Nevertheless, the low prices of rare earths are not the only reason that potential producers are struggling to enter the global REE market. Among other parameters, the separation of the individual elements seems to be the most important factor, as it is technically challenging and expensive to build and to operate."

This paper describes the scientific data acquisition, data interpretation, and sophisticated 3-dimensional modeling processes of an ongoing gas well stability research program by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Results from the NIOSH field instrumentation programs and the parallel 3-dimensional numerical modeling programs indicate that overburden depth, overburden geology, surface topographic relief, strata dip of the coal measure rocks, and casing cementing alternatives are the dominant factors affecting longwall-induced subsurface deformations and gas well casing stresses. Topographic relief could produce localized longwall-induced deformations if weak-to-strong rock interfaces are present near the bottom of stream valleys. Strata dip has significant impact on longwall-induced subsurface deformations. Cementing alternatives are found to have significant impacts on longwall-induced deformations and gas well casing stresses.

It is a pleasure to participate in this Fall meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers to discuss energy conservation trends in the cement industry. Energy is the "life blood" of American industry, and the ability to use available energy resources efficiently may well determine the future of our nation and of its industries. The Federal Energy Administration has classified cement manufacture as one of several energy-intensive industries in the U.S. and has selected the Portland Cement Association to make a detailed study of possible energy conservation measures. Member companies of the Portland Cement Association represent about 85% of the cement producing capacity of the United States and 100% of Canadian capacity. Stated briefly, the purpose of the Association is to extend the uses of portland cement and concrete through research and development, market promotion, education, and public affairs work. PCA's general offices and research laboratories are located in Skokie, Illinois. Our staff of engineers, scientists, and research personnel make the PCA uniquely qualified to perform an energy conservation study of the kind requested by FEA.

"Sepiolite is a magnesium-rich, porous, and fibrous clay mineral with broad applications. These applications take advantage of sepiolite’s high specific surface area and unique nano-sized channel structure. Over the past years, numerous materials and techniques based on the structure and property of sepiolite have been developed. This article reviewed the recent achievements in developments and applications of sepiolite in environmental protection, catalysis area, and nanocomposites. The prospectives of sepiolite applications is also discussed. INTRODUCTION Sepiolite is a magnesium-rich, porous, and fibrous clay mineral. The typical chemical formula of sepiolite is Si12Mg8O30[OH]4[OH2]4·8H2O [1]. Sepiolite has a high specific surface area and nano-sized channels because of its special structure [2]. This unusual crystal structure projected onto the [001] plane is shown in Fig.1 [3]. As it can be seen, silicon and oxygen atoms make up for the tetrahedral structure and magnesium and oxygen atoms form octahedral structure, respectively. Those tetrahedral-octahedral-tetrahedral ribbons expand boundlessly in one direction, leading to the special fibrous structure of the sepiolite. Every tetrahedral-octahedral-tetrahedral ribbon is combined to the next by an inverted Si–O–Si bond, which causes an interlaced layer with a continuous tetrahedral sheet and a discontinuous octahedral sheet. Terminal MgO at the edges of the ribbons is coordinated with two structural water molecules, which can form hydrogen bonds with zeolitic water molecules that are located in the channels running parallel to the fiber axis [3,4]. The Mg2+ ions inside the channels can be exchanged with other cations in solution. Therefore, sepiolite can be used to remove metal cations from aqueous solutions [5,6].It can be seen from Figure. 1 and Table 1 [7], the unique structure endows sepiolite with a substantial surface area and nanoscale channels. Its specific surface area reaches 320 m2/g and channel dimensions up to 3.7×10.6 Å. There are three active adsorption sites on the surface of sepiolite: one is oxygen atoms of the Si-O tetrahedron. The second is the structural water molecules paired with magnesium ions at the edges of the ribbons, which can form hydrogen bond with adsorbent. The last one is the Si-OH groups due to the breaks of the Si-O-Si bonds on the surface of Si-O tetrahedron. Thus, sepiolite has strong adsorption ability which has been widely used in environmental protection. Moreover, sepiolite has many significant features such as good mechanical and thermal stability, rheological property, porous, and easily modification, making it be a hotspot in chemical and biological researches. However, with the development of technology, broader and more advanced applications of sepiolite have been carried out in recent years. In this study, the recent achievement in sepiolite applications is summarized, the further tendency is also discussed."

The Tek Process can produce masonry products such as bricks, roof or wall tiles, and block from virtually any inorganic waste. In the process the aggregate raw materials, portland cement, water and common chemicals are first mixed together; then mechanically subjected to several thousand pound pressure per square inch. This causes a novel chemical reaction between the cement, chemicals and water; producing the "patented" Tek adhesive binder which holds the aggregate together in a stone-like mix. Simultaneously, the desired product shape is formed. The building modules can have strengths of 8000 p.s.i. (pounds per square inch) with completely sound aggregates utilizing air curing for a period of 28 days. With most aggregates, 3000 p.s.i. is achieved within 24 hours. Eventual strengths usually exceed 5000 p.s.i. with almost any raw material. Water absorption ranges from 5-7.5 percent. Both absorption and strength figures are superior to the most rigid of any and all A.S.T.M. specifications for the highest quality bricks. In most locations, the product (when brick shaped is called Tekbrik) can be produced significantly more economically than can comparable grades of clay or other bricks, be- cause almost any inorganic waste materials or pollutant can be used as a raw material. The process results in a lower manufacturing cost as compared to clay bricks; fuel cost to operate a clay kiln represents a substantial portion of the total cost. Capital expenditure for a Tek plant also is lower due to the large investment in clay kilns. Transportation savings also are important, clay brick factories must be very large because the kilns are uneconomical unless they are large. Most bricks are manufactured at the sites of clay deposits in relatively uninhabited areas. The cost of transportation to the job site represents a considerable percentage of the selling price.

Since there are abundant supplies of ores and fuels to keep prices down, at least in peacetime scenarios, future needs may be as much political and social as technical and economic. Engineers and economists will develop new and innovative ways to find, mine, process and pay for mineral deposits. Pressure from governments and non-governmental organizations and the public will combine with market forces to provide opportunities for highly competitive, risk-taking enterprises who can leverage the qualities of their orebodies and employees by being good neighbors and partners.

Coal is a low-cost and high-calorific-value fuel. The coal mining industry worldwide has been suffering from severe accidents due to coal dust explosion hazards since its inception. Statistically, it was observed that 12,489 fatalities had occurred in 104 reported mining accidents from coal dust explosions during 1900–2020. There are numerous methods for detection, prevention, and control of coal dust explosions in mines. The underground mining environment is unpredictable and has an array of variables. These undulating factors make it difficult to prevent or control the coal dust explosion hazard. However, coal mining is done aggressively throughout the world, especially in developing countries as coal is a major source of thermal energy used in power plants contributing to about 38% (IEA, (2019), World Energy Outlook, IEA, Paris https:// www. iea. org/ repor ts/ world- energy- outlo ok- 2019.) of world electricity. Worldwide, coal dust explosibility studies are carried out in experimental mines, laboratories, and simulations. The complexity, lack of proper infrastructure, and unavailability of laboratory equipment sometimes make it difficult to study coal dust explosibility. The authors have discussed in detail and proposed that the CFD modelling can be a viable option for studying and evaluating coal dust explosibility.

Federal laws mandate the presence of refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines and provide guidelines for harmful gas removal. After an explosion, harmful gases can follow survivors into an RA and can reach a deadly concentration. Investigators from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested 12 ventilation system configurations (VSCs) to purge sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas from a built-in-place (BIP) RA in the Experimental Mine in Bruceton, PA. Using a borehole air supply, tests were conducted with airflows of 750 and 1,000 standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM). Excluding a VSC where the air inlet was 1.98 m (78 in) from the air outlet, the results show that the time to purge the SF6 concentration from 1,000 parts per million (ppm) to 25 ppm ranged from 26 to 29 minutes for an airflow of 750 SCFM and ranged from 18 to 23 minutes for an airflow 1,000 SCFM. Mines can use this information to reduce purge time in case of a mine disaster and determine which VSC to avoid. INTRODUCTION After a fire or an explosion in an underground mine, the concentration of carbon monoxide can reach a fatal level. In a mine disaster, the main goal is to escape. However, if miners cannot escape, they have to migrate to a location to find refuge and, if possible, communication, and a borehole source for a fresh air supply. To ensure survival of the miners, Federal laws mandate the presence of a refuge alternative (RA) within 304.5 m (1,000 ft) of the nearest mining face. In addition, Code of Federal Regulations Title 30 CFR Section 7 sets the guidelines for personnel tracking, RAs, and the removal of noxious gases in underground coal mines (Mineral Resources, 30 CFR, 2014). Federal regulations define an RA as a protected, secure space with an isolated atmosphere and integrated components (Mineral Resources, 30 CFR, 2014). There are three types of RAs: portable metal RAs, portable tent-type RAs, and built-in-place (BIP) RAs. A BIP RA is constructed using masonry or other stoppings to create an isolated space in a mined-out area. Blast doors are installed in one or both of the stoppings for the miners to enter the RA. Furthermore, RAs must provide the following components: breathable air, food, water, air monitoring, and harmful gas removal. Federal regulations have emphasized the mandate for breathable air and harmful gas removal in the following words: “Purging or other effective procedures shall be provided for the airlock to dilute the carbon monoxide concentration to 25 ppm” (Mineral Resources, 30 CFR, 2014). The purpose of the mine ventilation system is to provide a sufficient quantity of air to the underground mine workings, to dilute methane and other contaminants, to maintain a suitable working environment, and to prevent accidents from happening (Cheng and Wei, 2014). In addition, the organic nature of coal amplifies risks from poisonous gases, explosions, and fires (Engström et al., 2018). If an underground coal mine ventilation system fails after an explosion, the concentration of toxic gases, most notably carbon monoxide, will increase. Carbon monoxide is dangerous because it creates tissue hypoxia by binding to hemoglobin (Özmen and Aksoy, 2015).

An atmospheric ammoniacal thiosulphate leach system was developed to recover gold and silver from residues of the ammoniacal oxidation leaching of sulphidic copper concentrates. Extractions of 88 - 95% Au and 83 - 98% Ag were attained within 2 to 4 hours at 40 - 60°C in thiosulphate leaching of the oxidation leach residues of Manitoba chalcopyrite concentrates analyzing 24.6% Cu, 0.18 oz/ton Au and 4.26 oz/ton Ag and a complex British Columbia chalcopyrite/tetrahedrite concentrate analyzing 18.5% Cu, 0.27 oz/ton Au and 276 oz/ton Ag. Parameters affecting the Au and Ag solubilization included thiosulphate, ammonia, and cupric ion concentrations, temperature, retention time and the degree of Cu extraction and sulphide oxidation in the primary oxidation leach. The precious metals were recovered from the thiosulphate liquors by zinc dust cementation.

This paper will review the evaluation performed for the Cottonwood & Hackberry Creek Wastewater Interceptor Improvements Project to replace two separate aging and undersized interceptor sewers by either open cut construction or trenchless construction methods. A case study will be discussed for the utilization of microtunneling to avoid a deep open cut excavation within a landscaped roadway median to construct nearly a mile of new 60-inch interceptor sewer in an urban area adjacent to an environmentally sensitive riverine area, while minimizing the permitting and environmental impacts of construction, and minimizing the impacts to residents and vehicular trafc and restoration reuirements.

Introduction A longwall mining demonstration currently in progress in the Herrin (No.6) Coal Member near Benton, Illinois, involves the extraction of three adjacent panels by the longwall method. The first panel was completed in May, 1977. The Illinois State Geological Survey is involved in this project for two reasons: (1) to detail the geology of the roof and relate the geologic features to the behavior of the roof during mining operations, and (2) to study the nature and occurrence of coal balls (carbonate petrifactions of peat) encountered during this demonstration. General Geology of Area The stratigraphic sequence of beds immediately above the No. 6 Coal in this area, ranging from oldest to youngest, is: gray shale (Energy Shale Member), black carbonaceous shale (Anna Shale Member), and argillaceous limestone (Brereton Limestone Member) (figure 1). In some areas of the mine, where one of these units may rest directly on the coal, one or more of the members is absent from the stratigraphic sequence. The nature of roof for the area is shown in figure 2. It is greatly exaggerated in the vertical direction. The Walshville Channel, 11.3 km west of this mine, was a river at least in part deposited at the same time as the coal. The gray shale wedge on top of the coal, which thins away from the channel, is thought to represent an overbank deposit of mud from the channel. The next layer deposited on top of the gray shale, and on the coal not covered by gray shale, is the black carbonaceous shale, believed to represent a mud deposited in a brackish environment. The liberation of intimately disseminated impurities from the coal matrix often demands that the material be ground to a high degree of fineness. Similarly, some technologies for coal utilization require superfine particles (i.e., sizes less than ten microns). This implies additional costs for coal preparation plants due to the high energy and media costs associated with fine grinding operations. Besides, there are problems such as sever product contaminations due to media wear and impairment of the quality of coal. Hence, proper choice of grinding media type is important from the viewpoints of cost reduction and product quality.
