"Economics of wear in mining industry and methods by which wear cost may be reduced will be discussed.IntroductionCanada loses more than $5 billion annually due to friction and wear (Table 1). It is estimated that about $1.3 billion, or about 25% of the losses, could be saved through better application of existing technology (Table 2). It should be noted that the costs given in Table 1 and 2 refer to 1986. The losses due to friction and wear and the savings would be much higher in 1996. Tribology combines the many branches and specialties in science and technology concerned with understanding and combatting friction and wear. Specifically, tribology is concerned with the design and manufacture of sliding and rolling bearings, piston rings, gears, cutting tools and other devices in which surfaces interact, in sliding or other relative motion. Tribology is concerned with the correct use of materials for interacting solid surfaces, with the interaction of the surfaces with the lubricants, with the chemistry, physics and use of lubricants. It is concerned with the reduction of friction and wear and the avoidance of associated failures in machinery. Similar tribological components such as bearings are used in different technologies and similar tribological problems such as abrasive wear occur in different industries. Thus, tribology is in itself a generic science and technology, concerned with the generation and dissemination of knowledge on friction, wear and lubrication, and the application of the knowledge, to a wide range of industrial products and equipment, from ploughs to space equipment, from prosthesis to engines, from washing machines to railways, from computers to power stations, from paper mills to mines. Over the past 50 years, there have been a number of geological, mineralogical and metallurgical studies carried out on the Clear Hills ironstone deposits in northern Alberta, Canada. Due to the low grade and complex mineralogy, previous metallurgical studies have achieved limited success. After rejecting some of the more ‘conventional’ techniques for iron ore beneficiation, the authors chose to investigate the grain enlargement/iron segregation process for the beneficiation of the Clear Hills ironstone. The segregation reactions for iron have not been explored in as much detail as they have for copper and nickel. Iron segregation roasting involves the addition of a carbonaceous reductant and a chloride transport agent to an iron oxide ore, and heating the mixture to an appropriate temperature. The benefit of this process is that it allows ores in which the value minerals are intimately associated with gangue minerals to be processed in circumstances where conventional iron ore processing techniques are not suitable or capable of upgrading the material. As iron is one of the few elements that can be transported through this process, a clean high purity metallic concentrate can be achieved.Through the use of crucible testing followed by Davis tube magnetic separation, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and atomic absorption spectroscopy analysis, characterization of the reaction products has been made with an improved understanding of the reaction mechanism.

In a COREM-McGill collaborative research and development project, gas dispersion parameters and froth properties were manipulated in a copper flotation plant to study interactions between the collection and the cleaning zones. In this paper, specific work on developing some relationships between operating conditions and froth stability in several different types of flotation cells is reported. Froth stability, measured by image analysis, was related to the following process conditions for specific flotation machines in an industrial case study: Gas flow rate, collector dosage, pH, frother type and dosage. Across the range examined, froth stability was improved through an increase in gas flow rate and/or frother dosage. Metallurgical results (grade and recovery) showed that both gold and copper were dependent on froth stability. Results indicated that flotation conditions could be optimized by monitoring froth stability.

The nature of processes that take place on top of copper bearing grains during the suppression of copper acid drainage from mine tailings was studied on a grain model. Cyclic voltammetry (C.V.) was employed as an experimental technique suitable for indirect measuring of copper leaching. Experiments were done in sulfuric acid (pH=2) at electrodes that progressively approach the real situation during acid main drainage, starting with Cu-metal, then with CuO and finally with CuO covered with CaSO4. Oxidation was found to be the only process that takes place on metallic copper electrode anodically polarized up to 2 V vs. Cu/CuSO4 reference electrode. Dissolution is intensive and reaches up to 50 mA.cm-2. When the same was repeated, but on CuO electrode, anodic currents were some 4 times lower than on the bare metallic surface. This indicates that the electrode material is not completely oxidized to copper(II)oxide and the Cu(O) or Cu(I) residues are oxidized during the anodic polarization. This explains the diminished dissolution. Dissolution is further restricted at electrodes covered with CaSO4. It is some 20 times lower than on the bare oxide electrode. When the second layer of CaSO4 was applied, anodic currents were another 15 times lower. Total decrease of anodic currents when transition is made from Cu-metal to CuO covered with 2 layers of CaSO4 reaches up to 7.500 times. C.V. measurements produced a proof that mechanical blockage is the way how lime prevents leaching of copper bearing grains in immobilization experiments referred elsewhere.

The phases of a typical exploration program for sand and gravel resources include: (1) collection and assessment of existing information; (2) air photo interpretation and remote sensing; (3) ground investigation and mapping; (4) sampling and testing; and (5) data storage, retrieval, analysis and presentation. Depending on the purpose, time frame and funding available for the study, these phases, and the various techniques used within each phase, will vary. Once a sand and gravel deposit has been located, defined in size and quality, and found to be suitable for a given purpose, it can then be classified as a granular resource.

Palabora Mining Copper has a unique ore body composition which unlike other copper ore bodies has three main components in significant proportions; these are copper bearing ore, magnetite and dolerite. The high content of dolerite, a hard barren material, creates a high proportion of pebbles which normally are recycled back to the mill. This action increases the mill bearing pressure and power progressively until corrective actions are taken. A logical action to solve the pebbles generation would be to incorporate a pebble crusher. This in fact was done however two fundamental issues were encountered; the high content of magnetite and existence of a cyclone classification section. Due to the high content of magnetite, metal detectors have not been able to work efficiently to separate tramp metal which causes damage to the pebble crushers. The existence of cyclones in the circuit had a detrimental effect on the final product when the pebbles crusher was online producing coarse sandy material. Due to the difficulties in treating pebbles via conventional procedures and the unique Palabora ore composition and characteristics, sorting technology was investigated at laboratory and pilot scale. It was found that a combination of optical and electromagnetic sorting could efficiently separate dolerite from the copper bearing and magnetite ores. This paper reports the findings of the laboratory and pilot scale work performed and discusses the additional benefits to the circuit.

Arsenic is a highly toxic compound that is naturally found in the environment and is released through the processing of sulphide minerals. Arsenate (As5+) is less toxic than arsenite (As3+) and is soluble in water but can form insoluble precipitates when metal ions are present. The arsenic removal processes used in industry assume that arsenic is in its pentavalent state. Hydrogen peroxide can be employed to oxidize arsenite; however, it is expensive. It has been shown that activated carbon can be used to catalyze the oxidation of arsenite with oxygen as the only consumed reagent at ambient conditions with an efficiency of 99% in less than 24 hours. The mechanism which oxidizes arsenite is not yet understood; however, this study shows that a strong oxidizing agent is formed in-situ. The species and amount of oxidant formed were determined via iodimetric titration and electrochemical methods. The production of oxidant was optimized by comparing the amount of oxidant formed in-situ to the relative amount of arsenite oxidized.

Different management options and rehabilitation strategies are available for mine wastes that produce acid mine drainage (AMD). One of them consists in building a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) on the tailings to limit the availability of oxygen, an essential component of the chemical reactions leading to the generation of AMD. Prior to cover construction, a monitoring strategy must be established to evaluate the response and performance of the cover system. The key parameters to monitor should include matric suction and volumetric water content in the CCBE, oxygen flux (and/or oxygen concentration) through and below the cover, and the main meteorological parameters for the impoundment. In this paper, different techniques available to measure the targeted parameters are described and their main properties are given. Recommendations (based on existing cases) on the location and the number of monitoring stations and on the measurement frequency for each monitored parameter are also proposed.

"Ground control research in underground coal mines has been ongoing for over 50 years. One of the most problematic issues in underground coal mines is roof failures associated with weak shale. This paper will present a historical narrative on the research the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has conducted in relation to rock mechanics and shale. This paper begins by first discussing how shale is classified in relation to coal mining. Characterizing and planning for weak roof sequences is an important step in developing an engineering solution to prevent roof failures. Next, the failure mechanics associated with the weak characteristics of shale will be discussed. Understanding these failure mechanics also aids in applying the correct engineering solutions. The various solutions that have been implemented in the underground coal mining industry to control the different modes of failure will be summarized. Finally, a discussion on current and future research relating to rock mechanics and shale is presented. The overall goal of the paper is to share the collective ground control experience of controlling roof structures dominated by shale rock in underground coal mining.INTRODUCTIONThe National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), formerly the United States Bureau of Mines, has been conducting research on ground control safety for over 50 years. The overall objective of the research is to reduce underground mining injuries and fatalities by characterizing roof conditions, improving roof support performance and application, and optimizing pillar design and mine layout. Underground mining has one of the highest fatal injury rates of any industry in the United States—more than five times the national average compared to other industries (CDC, 2012). Roof fall injuries can be severe, resulting in lacerations, bone fractures, amputations, and death. Non-injury roof falls can also be problematic, resulting in lost production, delays, blockage of primary escape routes, disruption to ventilation, and hazardous rehabilitation conditions.Coal mining is increasingly subject to more adverse geological conditions. Weak roof can be found in all coal mining regions in the United States, but there are a few geographically isolated areas with higher roof fall rates contributed to by particularly poor roof conditions, as represented in Figure 1. This figure shows that when non-injury roof fall rates are normalized to production, the Illinois Basin and Central/Northern Appalachia regions have the highest rates. These isolated regions have inherently weak roof even before mining has occurred, and this roof is easily damaged during the mining process. The weak roof in these regions consists primarily of shale. Shale can be troublesome in underground coal mining because it can appear massive but easily splits along bedding planes and is often moisture-sensitive."

THE first discovery of lead and zinc ore on Calumet island was made in 1893 by John Lawn, who then staked a portion of the property now owned by Calumet Mines, Limited. His discovery was developed by James and Calvin Russell, who are said to have shipped a few tons of sorted ore, averaging 39 per cent zinc, 13 per cent lead, and 11 oz. silver per ton. In 1898, the property was being operated by the Grand Calumet Mining Company, who mined and shipped, for treatment in a Belgian smelter, 1,100 tons of ore averaging 32 per cent zinc, 9 per cent lead, and an unreported content of gold and silver. After some indecisive exploration by an American syndicate in 1907, the property lay idle until1910, when the Calumet Metals Company-later reorganized as the Calumet Zinc and Lead Company-re-commenced exploration. After sinking an 85-foot shaft-the McDonald shaft-and doing a few hundred feet of drifting and cross-cutting, this Company, in 1912, erected a 150-ton daily capacity gravity-concentration plant, in which some 800 tons of ore, mined from the McDonald shaft and Bowie pit, were milled. Owing to very disappointing mill recoveries, the property was shut clown and-after several years of idleness-in? 1916 the mill and mining plant were destroyed by fire and the Company went into bankruptcy. In 1918, an unknown operator shipped to an Omaha, Nebraska, smelter 22 tons of ore, probably sorted from the dumps of the Ste. Anne shaft and Galena pits, averaging 44 percent lead, and 0.26 oz. gold and 61 oz. silver per ton. The British Metals Corporation (Canada), Limited, in 1926, optioned the property. They unwatered the McDonald shaft and, after doing an additional 300 feet of cross-cutting and drifting on the 85-ft. level, estimated there were some 33,000 tons of ore between this level and the surface. Surface exploration, including trenching, on other showings on the property gave discouraging results and the option was dropped.

Brief History of Discovery and Early Development In the first half of the nineteenth century, the only authority on the Pacific coast between the Columbia river and Alaska was exercised by the Hudson's Bay Company, who had established a series of forts and trading stations on the coast from the Columbia north to Millbank sound. The Hudson's Bay Company were chiefly interested in the fur industry, and the large influx of settlers from the eastern United States into the territory now known as the States of Oregon and Washington, about 1840, not only interfered with the fur business but involved the question whether the territory should be under the British or the American flag. Anticipating the possibility, later realized, of losing control of this area, the Company, in 1845, established their main fort and trading centre on the southern end of Vancouver island under the name of Fort Camosun; shortly afterwards changing the name to Fort Victoria. Realizing that their former policy of discouraging all attempts to develop any other business than the fur industry had lost them several hundred thousand square miles, the Hudson's Bay Company now set about encouraging settlers in the vicinity of Fort Victoria by disposing of lands to suitable parties and also to those in the employ of the Company. The usual pioneering stage was passed through with the starting of small sawmills, grain mills, etc., and the incidental work accompanying such efforts. Any coal required for blacksmithing or other purposes was brought from England around Cape Horn by the few ships that visited the Pacific Coast. About 1849, an Indian who was having his gun repaired by a blacksmith in Fort Victoria asked about the "black stones" used in the fire and, on being told that the "black stones" had to be brought a great distance, he informed the blacksmith that there was plenty of the same stone where his people lived. This information was immediately given to an official of the Hudson's Bay Company who talked with the Indian and told him that if he would bring some of the "black stones" he would get his gun repaired free and a present of a bottle of rum. Nothing more was heard of this coal until April of the following year, when the Indian came into Fort Victoria with his canoe loaded with coal, which was tested and found to be of good quality. It is reported that the Indian got his bottle of rum.

STEEL ROPE WIRE is one of the more specialized commodities among the many grades of highcarbon steel wires. In its production there are many metallurgical aspects of interest from the steelmaking on through the final stages of wire drawing. We produce rope wire in an integrated mill com prising all the operations from the blast furnaces to finished wire drawing in the wire mills. Steelmaking is carried out with close control on hot metal, selection of scrap, and fluxing materials. The basic open hearths are of 170 tons capacity. Steel is teemed into 19 1/2 in by 19 1/2 in big-end-down molds and is hot-topped with the use of clay refractory hot-tops. The weight of this ingot is 6,900 pounds. All high -carbon steel ingots are charged hot into the soaking pits and are then rolled through the blooming mill in 16 p asses to a bloom ax~ in. by 41/2 in. and approximately 65 feet long. Necessary bottom and top crops are taken on the bloom as it passes from the blooming? mill to the billet mill. The still hot bloom is continuously rolled through the billet mill in . 5 passes to a 2 3/8 in. square. Billets are cut to 32 feet in length by a flying shear and then allowed to cool on the hot bed.

Utilization of both slag and its heat for hot slag is a great challenge for iron and steel industry. Many methods of hot slag modification for directly converting hot slag into value-added materials were researched in recent years, and waste heat of hot slag could thereby be transformed into inner energy or chemical energy of the materials. In this paper, an experiment of converting hot slag directly into glass ceramics by hot slag modification method was conducted. A cooled modifiers mainly composed of fly ash were firstly heated though a cyclone furnace and then fell into a molten bath to mix with hot steel slag. Half of hot slag was used as raw materials and accordingly about half energy consumption, about 5MJ/kg for melting raw materials was saved in the process compared with that of traditional producing method. Frit quenched from the modified hot slag had a higher basicity of 0.6-0.7 than traditional frits in order to reduce the needed amount of cold modifiers and accordingly utilize more hot slag and its waste heat. Glass ceramics were further prepared from the frit and a heat treatment of one-stage method is more suiter to such frit than that of two-stage method. The glass-ceramics with basicity of 0.6 and heat-treated by one stage method had the best performance with bending strength of 146.46 MPa, Vickers hardness of 6.79 GPa, water absorption rate of below 2% and shrinkage rate of around 10%.

"In the past, simulation was considered to be an offline tool disconnected from plant operation. Advancements in the computation power combined with utilizing physics and chemistry sciences have allowed us to significantly improve the modeling and simulation technology for mining and mineral processing. This paper investigates the benefits of first principle models and simulation by connecting them to real time operation. Process data are connected to high fidelity models executed in parallel to the operation. In recent literature, this concept is known as Digital Twins. The Digital Twin is used for various purposes such as optimization, virtual instrumentation and condition monitoring. Using IDEAS™ simulation software we are able to construct a digital twin for different equipment inside a mineral processing plant. Two case studies for building a digital twin for the primary hydrocyclone feed pump and thickener underflow are presented. Using the pump’s model, a digital twin is developed and is installed in a gold extraction plant that is able to infer the slurry density in real time. Additionally, it is used for detecting sanding in the pipes and impeller condition monitoring.INTRODUCTION Since the eighties, thanks to advances in computation technologies, computer based simulation of processes using first principle models has become a well-known engineering tool for various industries. As our understanding of processes has increased, their representative models have become more realistic and more sophisticated. Due to this increase of accuracy, use of simulation is becoming more fundamental in process industries. The main goals to use accurate simulation is to decrease the engineering and construction cost, optimize the process design and improve the operation performance by decreasing operation cost and increasing efficiency. The term Digital Twin was first introduced in 2010 by NASA (Shafto et al., 2012) in aerospace industry. Subsequently, the concept quickly spread through other industries. As of today, no standard organization has provided an official and unique definition of Digital Twin for process industries. However, there are three important aspects that are common throughout various descriptions. When simulation is core functionality of the process (1) along the entire life cycle of the plant (2) with direct linkage to operation (3), it is called that process has a Digital Twin. "The cost of occupational injuries and diseases in the mining industry in Quebec was estimated for the period of 2010 to 2012. The method used takes into account the financial and human costs assumed by employers, workers, and the community. To better direct research and prevention toward issues with the most significant consequences, the results are presented in various ranking tables, which stakeholders might find useful.RÉSUMÉ Le coût des accidents du travail et des maladies professionnelles dans l’industrie minière au Québec a été estimé pour la période 2010-2012. La méthode utilisée prend en compte les coûts financiers et humains endossés par les employeurs, les travailleurs et la communauté. Afin de mieux orienter les recherches et la prévention vers les problèmes ayant les plus graves conséquences, les résultats sont présentés dans divers tableaux de classement, qui seront d’une grande utilité aux parties prenantes. INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry is much safer today than it was 30 or 40 years ago, mainly due to a more qualified workforce, the use of automated equipment, and a corporate culture more focused on occupational health and safety (OHS); however, the number and the severity of occupational injuries and diseases continue to make this industry one of the most hazardous. In the province of Quebec, the mining industry accounts for approximately 0.4% of paid workers but is the source of 4% of fatal work accidents. It is, therefore, important to continue the prevention efforts already underway in the mining industry.The difficult global economy, which has affected the mining industry in the last few years, is an opportunity to reaffirm that sound management of OHS can have a positive impact on companies’ productivity and profitability. Occupational injuries and diseases are costly for the companies concerned and for society as a whole. Reducing their occurrence makes it possible to reduce not only the size of workers’ compensation board contributions but also several other financial and human costs."

Abstract -Nodules of carbonaceous matter have been observed in several Archaean peraluminous granites adjoining the gold- and uranium-bearing Witwatersrand Basin. These nodules, which resemble solid bitumen, usually replace uraninite or uranothorite and are paragenetically late. They show many similarities to kerogen seams and nodules associated with the conglomerate horizons in the Witwatersrand Basin, including composition, maturation, intimate association with uraninite, and a late paragenesis. U-Pb isotope ratios for granite-hosted and Witwatersrand kerogens define a single, albeit somewhat diffuse, Pb-loss discordia suggesting an upper intercept age of circa 2300 Ma. Carbon isotope analysis indicates lighter ?13C values for the granite-hosted nodules than for the sediment-hosted kerogen seams. Raman spectroscopy indicates that granite-hosted kerogen is more highly ordered than Witwatersrand seam kerogen. A model is presented which links the granitoid­ and sediment-hosted organic matter to an event of oil generation in the Witwatersrand Basin circa 2300 Ma ago. Light hydrocarbons migrated through the sediments and into underlying/adjacent granitic rocks, undergoing polymerization and accumulation in response to radiation accompanying the presence of high-uranium phases.

"Aggregates are the low-cost mineral raw material of building construction. Large volumes of aggregate are consumed each year. The availability of aggregates in southern Ontario is discussed in the context of the geological formations in which they occur. Sand and gravel are abundant in glacial deposits and in recent sediments. A knowledge of the glacial history is important for their discovery. Bedrock formations provide a variety of aggregates in Ontario. Knowledge of the rock types involved and of the depth of overburden are important for evaluation of the aggregate potential of bedrock resources in an area. Utilization of available resources intensifies as the population increases. Urban development makes it progressively more difficult to satisfy the demands of the construction industry. The effects of urban development on the aggregate resource base of an area are illustrated by developments and consumption statistics in the Toronto- centred region. There is an obvious need for a comprehensive survey of available resources in urban areas to serve as a guide in land-use planning. To fill this need, staff members of the Industrial Minerals Section, Geological Branch, Ontario Department of Mines and Northern Affairs, are engaged in mapping projects and mineral resource studies in southern Ontario as well as in some urban areas of northern Ontario."

The Salmita Gold Mine is located 240 air kilometres northea t of Yellowknife on the east shore of Matthews Lake. Salmita is one of several gold showings which are regionally associated with the steep easterly dipping contact zone between mafic, intermediate and fe lsic volcanics to the west and overlying finely laminated argillaceous sediments to the east. The volcanic assemblage forms a narrow 2 m to 7 m wide north to northwesterly trend ing Belt of Yellowknife Supergroup Archaen greenstone rocks. The contact zone exhibits exhalite character and the increased sulphide content provides a di stinct VLF-EM , IP/Resisti vi ty and/or magnetic signature. Gold occurs at or near this contact in three main settings: associated with si liceous vein-like structures; with finely disseminated sulphides within ericitic altered upper fe lsic tuffaceous unit ; or with quartz in narrow shear zones within the overlying sediment . The B-Vein is of the former type with free mi ll ing gold occurring within a highly sil iceous zone having an average widtn of 1.69 m. Alteration is intense within the immediately su rrounding host lithologies and includes the development of si lica, carbonate, sulphide, sericite and chlorite with minor graphite, epidote. tourmaline and scheelite. The mineable zone above the 4th level (-200 m) ha an average strike of 160 m and is divided into three south plunging ore shoots separated by the regional Salmita Shear Zone in the south and by a low-grade structural hiatus in the north. Production from the B-Vein commenced in August 1983 based on a diluted in situ ore reserve of 140,000 t grading 26.6 git Au . As of December 31, 1985, a total of 131 ,537 t grading 27.8 git Au have been mined at a ra.te of 160 t per day and a 96.4 percent recovery, to produce 3,522 ,000 g (113,227 ounces) of gold . Current (January I, 1986) reserves total 45,500 t grading 37 g/t Au down to the 10th level (-500 m) .

This paper presents the results of theoretical and technological studies on leaching ore of Bozshakol deposit. The major oxidized copper mineral of Bozshakol ore is atacamite, and the content of malachite, azurite, cuprite, copper sulfide minerals is insignificant. The chemical composition of the test sample, with mass, %: 0.9 Cu; 55.00 SiO2; 22.40 AI2O3; 9.00 Fe2O3; 2.24 CaO; 3.56 MgO. Technological studies on leaching the ore were carried out with sulfuric acid 5, 15, 25 and 50 g/dm3 in one and multistage (up to 4 stages) countercurrents. Size of ore 1 mm, the ratio S : L 1: 4. It was found that with increasing of acid concentration from 5 to 50 at one-mode leaching the copper extraction reaches 55 %. At multistage leaching the copper recovery reaches 73 %, a productive solution containing g/dm3: Cu - 4; Fe – 1.2; Al – 1.1 at a pH of 2.8. When leaching the cinders obtained by ore roasting in an atmosphere with limited value of oxygen, with increasing of the roasting temperature from 650 up to 750 °? the extraction of copper from the Bozshakol ores reduced from 31.5% down to 24.4%. The rate of filtration is markedly increased compared with the crude ore. When leaching the cinders obtained by roasting in a nitrogen atmosphere a marked increase up to 87.2-88 % of copper extraction from Bozshakol ores is observed. As an extractant for the extraction of copper from the pregnant solution used LIX984N extractant in kerosene. On the basis of the calculations it was built extraction isotherm and modeled processes of copper recovery with the circuit 2E + 1P, allowing up to 93 and 96% extraction. The through extraction of copper from the ore in the electrolyte was 67 %. Technology is recommended for semi test.

At the end of a century of mining education in South Africa, it is appropriate to reflect on the past, take stock of the present and ponder the future of mining education. While it is likely that changes in the mining industry will generate an increased demand for mining graduates, the number of suitably qualified applicants to study mining is worryingly small. While good progress has been made in unifying the educational system that previously provided schooling on a racially separate basis, it appears that a decade or more will be required to raise competency levels in mathematics, science and English, and this paper describes the process as it affects mining engineering programs. It also describes the initiatives currently being undertaken by the University of the Witwatersrand and the mining industry to ensure that the South African industry receives an adequate flow of well-qualified mining graduates, despite more than 70% of the intake coming from severely disadvantaged educational backgrounds.
