The availability of mineral aggregates for construction purposes is rapidly declining through inadequate resource planning. restrictive zoning and legislation , and competing land uses. The Geological Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has undertaken to provide aggregate inventory reports for all townships designated under The Pits and Quarries Control Act, 1971, and eventually for all towns hips in heavily populated areas. The reports contain maps and recommendations for extractive zoning by municipalities; of necessity only the largest deposits are given priority recommendations. It is intended that these reports should improve the resource planning in areas underlain by large aggregate deposits. The inventory is only possible because a concentrated effort has been made to map the Quaternary geology of populated areas over the last ten years. Future needs require that we develop methods to determine the extent of poorly defined and buried aggregates and that we look for natural alternatives.

"Testwork was conducted in order to compare the effectiveness of carbon based catalysts while oxidizing a gold-bearing pyrite concentrate under atmospheric conditions. Without the use of a catalyst the oxidation of pyrite was incomplete after 96 hours, resulting in roughly 60% pyrite oxidation. Furthermore the resulting sulphate yield from unassisted pyrite oxidation ranged between 72 and 84%. It is evident that atmospheric oxidation of pyrite is not viable due to slow oxidation kinetics and high sulphuric acid production when using a ferric sulphate media without a catalyst. The effect of two different carbon based catalysts, one Lewatit® AF 5 a new microporous carbonaceous bead, and the second a granular coconut shell based activated carbon, were tested under the same oxidation conditions as the unassisted pyrite tests. After 96 hours, Lewatit® AF 5 assisted oxidation showed approximately 96% pyrite oxidation with a sulphate yield ranging between 26 and 35%, while the activated carbon assisted oxidation reached approximately 100% pyrite oxidation with a sulphate yield between 36 and 37%. Testwork indicated that not only does the addition of a carbon based catalyst greatly improve the oxidation kinetics and lead to almost complete oxidation, the sulphate yield is also drastically reduced, resulting in very high elemental sulphur yields.INTRODUCTION Pyrite is an important sulphide mineral due to its ability to contain invisible gold concentrations up to 132 g/t (Chryssoulis & Cabri, 1990). As a result, ores composed of only a small amount of pyrite still have the ability to contain high gold grades. This refractory gold cannot be accessed via conventional gold leaching processes, such as cyanidation, and additional oxidative pre-treatment is required to liberate the gold, making it more amenable to extraction (Marsden & House, 2006). Current oxidative pre-treatments do exist consisting of both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes including high temperature and high pressure leaching within autoclaves, biological atmospheric leaching and roasting. Autoclaves are a proven process reaching desirable recoveries within approximately a 1–2 hour retention time, due to the increased temperatures and pressures, allowing for an increase in dissolved oxygen (Marsden & House, 2006). The typical reaction for pyrite oxidation within autoclaves is presented in Equations 1, 2 and 3."

Inter formational sliding of bedding planes between two different rock types in Badong formation is an important reason that leads to the instability and fracture of rock mass in this stratum. There are no specific research achievements on bedding planes between two different rock types in Badong formation. In order to study the shear mechanical properties of bedding planes between two different rock types. This paper using the software of particle flow code (PFC) and JRC model to establish several typical structures of different roughness coefficient of surface morphology based on the laboratory tests on silty mudstone and marlite in Badong formation. A great deal of numerical shear tests were carried out by ball production, radius expansion and servo infliction. The research results are as follows: First, shear strength of Badong formation is found to vary between that of silty mudstone and marlite isotropic planes by analyzing shear strength of the homogenous bedding planes and inhomogeneous rock types, we can find that the shearing strength in Badong formation is between silty mudstone and marlite isotropic planes and which is closer to the shearing strength of silty mudstone isotropic planes. Second, the basical friction angle of bedding planes between two different rock types in Badong formation is between silty mudstone and marlite isotropic planes and which is closer to the basical friction angle of silty mudstone between isotropic planes. Third, based on the experimental results, an expression is obtained to describe the relationship of the ratio of shearing strength between bedding planes of two different rock types and isotropic planes in soft rock, the rock combination coefficient, and the roughness coefficient. This study has important significance for further research on the shear mechanical properties of bedding planes between two different rock types.

"On a développé un procédé qui donne une fonte (2,3% C, 0,07% V) du V2O5 (99%) et un rutile synthétique (94% TiO2) à partir d'un minerai, dont les réserves au Québec sont importantes. Le procédé comprend les opérations suivantes: 1) la concentration magnétique du minerai (30% Fe, 9% TiO2 et 0,65% V2O5) pour produire un concentré (65% Fe, 7% TiO2 et 1,6% V2O5); 2) le smeltage du concentré aggloméré dans un four à arc, sans fondant, pour produire une fonte et une scorie (30% FeO, 40% TiO2 et 8,0% V2O5) qui contient plus de 95% du vanadium et du titane présents dans le concentré; 3) le grillage alcalin (37% Na2CO3) de la scorie suivi d'une lixiviation à l'eau et de la précipitation de l'hexavanadate d'ammonium à partir du filtrat; 4) la lixiviation du résidu par l'acide sulfurique pur ou usagé pour produire un rutile synthétique. Un estimé préliminaire de la valeur économique du projet laisse croire à sa rentabilité à la condition que l'investissement pour le smeltage soit inférieur à environ 400$/tonne de fer.IntroductionLes gisements de magnétites titanifères sont nombreux dans le monde. Ils consistent en une magnétite étroitement liée a l'ilménite, La teneur trop élevée en TiO2 empêche l'exploitation de ces gisements pour la production de fer. Cependant, dans certains cas, la magnétite a une teneur intéressante en vanadium qui peut rendre l'exploitation de ces gisements rentable. Aujourd'hui, les magnétites titanifères constituent la plus importante source de production de vanadium. On estime qu'environ 70% du vanadium produit provient de ces sources."

Newmont&apos;s Phoenix Project is located near Battle Mountain, Nevada and is scheduled to produce copper concentrates containing high precious metal values. High temperature pressure oxidation (PDX) of the concentrates was considered as a treatment option during process development. The metals content in Phoenix concentrates range from: 15-25% for Cu, 1-10% for Zn, 0-2% for Pb and ?27% Fe. The precious metals content of the Phoenix concentrates can range up to ?300 g/t Au and >3,000 g/t Ag. As a consequence it was necessary that any process for consideration should have the capability of recovering both the copper and precious metal values. Typically, gold can easily be leached from the autoclave discharge solids, but silver is chemically bound with the jarosite formed and cannot be directly leached. Laboratory investigations led to the development of a patented PDX process that minimizes the formation of jarosite so that the silver can be leached easily along with the gold. The process was confirmed with extensive pilot plant testing. Excellent solution extraction of copper and zinc was achieved, and both iron and lead were precipitated in the PDX residue. The process produces clean PDX discharge liquors with very low iron concentrations. As an example, conventional PDX techniques resulted in pregnant liquors containing ?5 g/L Fe. However, the Newmont process, which controls the iron and sulfate species, achieved high iron precipitation in the PDX solids and pregnant liquors containing <0.5 g/L Fe. High gold and silver recoveries were achieved by direct cyanidation of the PDX solids. This process has the added benefit of producing PDX solids that demonstrate superior settling and filtration characteristics.

"The Sturgeon Lake deposit, a partly eroded lens of massive sulphides with an underlying sulphide stringer zone, is one of five orebodies that occur in the Sturgeon Lake area of northwestern Ontario within volcaniclastic rocks of the Archean Wabigoon Subprovince in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield.The Sturgeon Lake Cu-Zn-Pb-A g-Au deposit was discovered in October 1970 as a result of an I.P. survey. Production from this open-pit mine began in March 1974 and continued until the ore was exhausted in March 1980.The Sturgeon Lake property is underlain by basaltic volcanics, minor amounts of mafic lapilli tuff and rhyolite volcaniclastics. A quartz crystal-bearing rhyolite occurs at the top of the felsic volcaniclastics and is ""capped"" by the Sturgeon Lake massive sulphide deposit. The felsic volcanics have been intruded by a crudely layered sill-like, carbonatized mafic intrusion. Recent work suggests that the felsic rocks that underlie the Sturgeon Lake deposit are lateral equivalents of those in the vicinity of the Mattabi Mine and are not correlative with the dacitic volcaniclastics that underlie the Lyon Lake and Creek Zone deposits. Hydrothermal processes that resulted in the formation of the Sturgeon Lake orebody have resulted in a depletion of Na2O, CaO and FeO and an increase in MgO, K2O, copper and zinc. In the vicinity of the sulphide stringer zone, the rhyolites are ""bleached"" due to silicification and sericitization. The rocks lying immediately below the massive sulphides are locally strongly chloritic.The Sturgeon Lake deposit may have formed on a top ographic high which prevented mafic flows and dacitic volcaniclastics that underlie the Lyon Lake and Creek Zone deposits from inundating the Sturgeon Lake fumarolic vent from the west. Continued or resurgent activity from the Sturgeon Lake fumarole may have resulted in the formation of the Lyon Lake and Creek Zones as more ""distal "" deposits in topographic lows. The Sturgeon Lake, Lyon Lake and Creek Zone deposits were subsequently overlain by mafic tuffs and flows."

It is very easy to reduce iron ore at a temperature well below its melting point and produce a more-or-less-pure metal which can be used directly for implements, tools, or machines. This simplicity has been the cause of much money loss by persons who were so satisfied with the successful operation of a process that they paid all too little attention to the commercial aspects of it. How easy a direct process is may be gleaned from the fact that it was practised with some -success by primitive man, and has been in almost continuous operation in one form or another for a period of probably 4,000 years. The production of steel in ton lots, beginning about 1860, brought a new phase into the economic situation, which, however, had been already greatly modified in 1784 by Henry Cort&apos;s invention of purifying pig iron. Direct processes survived both of these revolutions, under special geographical conditions, even up to the last few years of the nineteenth century, but ceased to have any general use as the basis of supply for structural, machine, or tool industries even in countries which could have manufactured iron by a direct process, but, instead, imported the product of established iron and steel processes. And this is still the situation today, notwithstanding the invention of an incredible number of &apos;new&apos; processes since 1900, most of which are abandoned, and only survived as along as their financial backers were willing and able to Jose money. Probably none of these processes failed to work pretty well, and all seemed to show a handsome profit on paper.

"As open-pit operations expanded at Pine Point, hydraulic aquifer evaluation was undertaken to establish the criteria necessary for the design of a feasible dewatering system.The extreme climate of this northern location dictated that the ore zone under extraction be rendered as dry as possible to minimize freezing effects. The design and implementation of such a system necessitated detailed hydraulic evaluation, and the problems that occurred are typical of those inherent in open-pit mining operations in northern areas.The paper describes the problem solution as approached from a mine engineering point of view, with particular reference to the practical aspects of operation and installation. The hydrological analysis used is simple and readily applicable to most open-pit dewatering problems."

"Microseismic monitoring provides insight into the location and extent of rock-mass fracturing induced by cave mining, enabling interpretation of the cave profile and validation of predictive numerical models. Source location uncertainties can lead to misinterpretation of the inferred characteristics of the fracture network. One principal source of uncertainty is the velocity model used to invert the location algorithm. Large-scale 3D numerical models of modulus changes across a caved mass can represent such complexities in the location algorithms, allowing more accurate interpretation of the microseismic activity. A Northparkes mine case study applies this advanced approach to microseismic data interpretation.RÉSUMÉ Le suivi microsismique fournit des renseignements sur la localisation et l’étendue des fractures de la masse rocheuse induites par l’exploitation par blocs foudroyés; cela permet d’interpréter le profil de la chambre foudroyée et de valider les modèles prédictifs numériques. Les incertitudes quant à la localisation de la source peuvent conduire à des mésinterprétations des caractéristiques inférés du réseau de fractures. Une des principales sources d’incertitudes est le modèle de vitesse utilisé pour inverser l’algorithme de localisation. Des modèles numériques tridimensionnels à grande échelle des changements du module d’élasticité à travers une masse foudroyée peuvent représenter de telles complexités dans les algorithmes de localisation, permettant ainsi une interprétation plus juste de l’activité microsismique. "Satisfactory hydraulic performance of a centrifugal slurry pump is not the only design criterion. If abrasive wear exists the severity of any damage can be reduced and the life of the wearing parts prolonged by selecting the correct pump to suit the conditions of service. This paper is concerned with the design and construction of centrifugal pumps for handling abrasive solids. The wear phenomena due to the slurry being pumped and the materials used to combat abrasive, wear are outlined. The hydraulic design of the impeller and casing and their relationship to wear and the hydraulic radial and axial unbalance are discussed. The prediction of abrasive wear in pumps can not be precise, as many factors are involved - and this is the object of current research."

Using constructed wetlands to chemically reduce hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) to Cr(III) from industrial and mining wastewater has proven to be feasible and efficient. Applying first-order kinetics to describe the process is simple, but in some cases a more accurate model is required to reflect the process. This paper studies the feasibility of using non–first-order kinetics to describe the reduction process. Results indicate that half- and second-order kinetics adequately described Cr(VI) reduction in laboratory wetland mesocosms. The organic carbon content played a relevant role, whether it was built up by plant growth or spiked into the feed water.

"This paper reviews the installation, start-up, and operation of a comprehensive monitoring and targeting management technique in which all plant utilities (i.e., electricity, natural gas, compressed air, and water) are managed as controllable resources in the same way that raw materials, mined ore, personnel and capital are managed.The essential elements of monitoring and targeting (M&T) include:•gathering in a systematic, disciplined way the utility information by energy account centres;•closely monitoring the utilities used in each centre and comparing them with production on a common time base (e.g., kWh/ton per day);•bench marking and target setting to pro-vide attainable energy reduction goals which can be further refined as they are achieved; and•establishing an implementation plant that may provide efficiency enhancing benefits to various operating areas within the plant.The M&T system will reduce utility consumption per unit of production on a continuing basis.This would translate into sustained operating cost and waste. M&T will also provide better information for assessing the plant operation and progressively implementing further enhancements."

The ASTM B108 Mould and a Modified Mould were used to cast test bars under a variety of conditions: mould and pouring temperatures, mould coating and tilt. Mechanical properties were determined in the as-cast and heat-treated conditions. The ASTM Mould is less sensitive to casting variables. Enlarging the gating system and adding additional gates to the ASTM mould can improve properties in the tilt position. The reproducibility of properties in as-cast and T6 heat treated bars was investigated.

"Developing technology to address the environmental hazards associated with selenium in mine-impacted waters has been a serious challenge. Ion exchange (IX) has been identified as a potential treatment technology. This paper begins with a review on selenium adsorption with commercially-available basic anionic exchangers (BAS). It then looks at the use of resins for selenium removal via modification with the addition of -O, -N, or -S-containing chelating ligands and chelating polymeric ion exchangers pre-loaded with immobilized metal cations. The synthesis of chelating exchangers requires a final product with a highly stable metal in the ligand-metal complex. The nature, oxidation state, size, and affinity of the metal for the target oxyanions and the size, degree of protonation and space configuration of the oxyanion are among critical factors affecting the oxyanion uptake. There is a limited number of studies on the critical parameters affecting the selenium affinity for chelating exchangers. Such a study could fill in the gaps of our understanding of selenium-metal-chelating ligand interactions and assist in developing a new ion exchanger. In addition to commercial IX resins, layered double hydroxide materials (LDH) have received attention for oxyanion removal from waste water. The adsorption capacity of the LDHs are affected by the crystallinity of LDH, the nature of metal components, the ratio of metals, charge and type of anion, and the space between the layers. In particular, the Friedel phase (FP), a member of the LDH family, showed high adsorption capacity for selenate removal from synthetic solution. A study is currently underway at the University of British Columbia to investigate the effect of different synthesis methods and aging on the suitability of FP for selenium removal from mine waste water."

"This article describes the project development and successful implementation of a particle sorter at the Kensington mine. The Kensington underground gold mine and associated milling facilities are located within the Berners Bay Mining District on the east side of Lynn Canal about 45 miles north-northwest of Juneau, Alaska. The paper describes the project from concept, through the development phase, including test work confirming feasibility, to a discussion of operational data and includes shared experiences from operation and maintenance. The project has proven successful in recovering gold that was previously lost to the waste dump and has already resulted in a positive return on investment. The payback was achieved in less than one year.INTRODUCTION The first paragraphs of this paper describe Coeur Mining and the Kensington Mine, its history, geology, mining operation and mill. The second part of this paper gives a quick introduction to sensor-based sorting in general and X-ray transmission sorting (XRT) in particular. This article does not cover costs or economic impacts apart from the pay-back period for the investment at Kensington. Interested readers find more in information on this in the literature (Kleine & Wotruba, 2010; Robben, 2013). Since the publication about XRT sorting at TGME in Pilgrim’s Rest (Kleine, Riedel, Ketelhodt, & Murray, 2010), this is the first time that a comprehensive data set on gold ore sorting using XRT is published. Following chapters highlight the aim of the project for Coeur Kensington, project development through testing and operation before concluding. ABOUT COEUR MINING’S KENSINGTON OPERATION Coeur Mining is the largest U.S.-based silver producer and a significant gold producer with five precious metals mines in the Americas employing approximately 2,100 people. Coeur produces from its wholly owned operations: the Palmarejo silver-gold mine in Mexico, the San Bartolomé silver mine in Bolivia, the Rochester silver-gold mine in Nevada, the Kensington gold mine in Alaska, and the Wharf gold mine in South Dakota. The Company also has a non-operating interest in the Endeavor mine in Australia in addition to royalties on the Cerro Bayo mine in Chile, the El Gallo complex in Mexico, the Zaruma mine in Ecuador, and the Correnso mine in New Zealand. In addition, the Company has two silver-gold feasibility stage projects—the La Preciosa project in Mexico and the Joaquin project in Argentina. The Company also conducts ongoing exploration activities in Alaska, Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, and Nevada. THE cinnabar deposits of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company&apos;s Pinchi Lake property, situated near Fort St. James, B.C., were discovered and reported on by a Dominion Government geological party in 1937. Claims were staked by a group of local prospectors and, later, the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, took an option on the property. By the fall of 1939, exploration work had indicated ore of commercial quantity and grade, and laboratory tests had shown that standard methods of reduction, namely, roasting of the ore, followed by condensation of the mercury vapour produced, would result in satisfactory recovery. In June, 1940, construction of a 50-ton unit arranged for wood firing was completed and operation commenced. The installation consisted of a 46 in. by 60 ft. rotary kiln (see Figure 1) followed by a 14-in. Sirocco cyclone, a cast-iron condenser unit, and a 1,700 c.f.m. fan, exhausting to a stack. Other equipment included a 9 in. by 18 in. Denver jaw crusher with the necessary bins and feeders. As the need for mercury was urgent, because of war requirements, construction of a duplicate unit was begun almost immediately. This first extension started operation in January, 1941, and the plant was then capable of treating about 150 tons of ore daily.

A new method has been developed for calculating flowing bottom hole pressure in a gas well, using as a basis the general energy equation. Fundamentally, the method shows that a plot of flowing pressure versus depth for a gas well can be represented as a series of incremental .straight lines, with the accuracy in-creasing as the number of increments increase. It is shown mathematically that for most cases the slope of the flowing pressure versus depth curve is essentially constant, in which case a single calculation based on surface conditions will yield acceptable results. In all cases studied no more than two iterations were required for very good accuracy, and in most cases only one iteration was necessary. Several example calculations are shown and the results are compared to other commonly used methods of calculating bottom hole pressures These examples show that the method provides answers which are at least as accurate as other methods usually used, and results in a considerable reduction in computation time.

Alberta Plains coals exhibit an almost rectilinear system of vertical fracturing called "cleat", which is best traced by mapping true bearings of underground coal mine rooms. The cleat pattern is approximately conformable with a pattern of surficial features and a pattern of bedrock jointing in the Alberta Plains, and with the trend of the Rocky Mountain Trench, but not with the distribution pattern of coal rank nor with the trend of the eastern boundary of the Rocky Mountains and Foothills physiographic province. The processes resulting in cleat remain in doubt, but cleat is always of practical importance in extracting coal from deeply buried deposits.

THE prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium has been reported by Denny, Robson, and Irwin in two papers. The first (1) was published in 1937; the second (2), in 1939. The results definitely established that silicosis was prevented in animals by the inhalation of small quantities of aluminium. The present communication records subsequent progress in this field of research. HARMLESSNESS OF ALUMINIUM Animal experiments having served their purpose, it became necessary to consider means to test the discovery on humans. A question for immediate consideration was: Is aluminium harmful to man when inhaled as a fine powder? While the animal experiments were reassuring, since they conclusively showed the powder to be innocuous when breathed by animals, it was, nevertheless, desirable to have additional reassurance with regard to its effect upon human beings. Through the courtesy of the Aluminum Company of America and especially the valued interest in this problem displayed by that Company&apos;s Director of Research, Dr. Francis C. Frary, a study was made of the records pertaining to the health of a group of 125 employees who had for many years been engaged in the manufacture of finely powdered, metallic aluminium for the paint and ink industries. The conditions were such that these employees had inhaled varying and oft-times very dense concentrations of this powder daily over periods ranging from 6 to 23 years, the average for the group being 12 years. X-ray pictures of their chests showed no abnormalities attributable to aluminium. Their general health seemed better than that of the 3,000 workers in other sections of the plant. In fact, the early films of three employees in this group of 125 showed shadows suggestive of minimal tuberculosis, which shadows were not discernible in films taken after considerable periods of exposure to aluminium powder. The harmlessness of aluminium was, by this study, reasonably well established at the outset, a finding subsequently verified by Ontario research on humans.
