First-order kinetics adequately describe the recovery of a single floatable species. The conditions under which cell behazior can be simulated by a single-phase model are discussed; deviations from the multiphase model are accountable. The rate coefficient depends upon operating conditions besides particle size and mineralogy and the physicochemical properties of the pulp constituents. The model for a real flotation system combines the first -order, single-phase model with a distribution of noninteracting species. Methods for determining the distributions are discussed. Applications of the procedure to flotation studies are outlined. The mathematical description of flotation as a rate process can be traced to Garcia1 who reported cases in which the fraction of solid remaining in a cell in semi-batch operation, F (for Notation used throughout, see Table l), decays exponentially with experimental time T. F = e-k>r. (1 The differential equation leading to Eq. 1 is dF ----= -k,F (2) dT which is recognized as the algebraic analog of the chemical kinetics first-order reaction equation.' This has led to suggested mechanisms for flotation and mathematical relationships other than first order: with very little foundation other than analogy. The flotation rate coefficient kl can be accounted for as the product of several probabilities concerning bub-ble-particle attachment and detachment, aggregate entry from pulp into froth and return from froth to pulp, and removal from froth as concentrate. These factors clearly contribute to the magnitude of the overall flotation rate, and there are others also, but describing flotation merely as the overall probability of consecutive gross events hardly appears a significant advance in understanding. More recently, it has been described in terms of a stochastic process, which promises to provide a more satisfactory approach? The present paper will be more concerned with a phenomeno-logical description of the flotation process than with an account of the internal mechanics of the process. This is not a statement of priorities, or a judgement of the relative importance of these options but rather an assessment of what is presently possible. Previous investigators'" have developed methods for interpreting semi-batch flotation data in terms of species distribution. These methods have been used in an attempt to explain flotation behavior in response to changes in operating conditions." IN recent interesting papers,1,2 Bardos et al. have described ternary Laves phases of the type A2(BsSi) and A4(B5Si3) where A = titanium vanadium, niobium, and so forth, and B = manganese, iron, cobalt, or nickel; other more complex formulae have also been established. In these phases, silicon plays the part of the smaller B atom of a Laves phase AB2, and the interatomic distances show that the effec- tive silicon radii lie between 1.16 and 1.21Å, and are thus very much smaller than the metallic radius of silicon for CN = 12. It does not seem to have been pointed out that these small atomic radii are almost the sape as the normal covalent radius of silicon (1.174Å). If, therefore, silicon acts as an acceptor of electrons as suggested by Bardos et al.,1 it appears to do so, not by the building up of a negatively charged silicon ion which would be large, but by the formation of what are very nearly or may be actually normal covalent bonds. Since a covalent bond contains two electrons, its formation would reduce the number of electrons available for bonding in other parts of the structure, and in this way the effect of silicon in stabilizing the o phase at high electron concentrations might be understood.

The developments of the past five years have shown that Alaska, as a field for mining, stands in the first rank among the possessions of the United States. Its annual gold output is now about $8,000,000. It produces silver, copper and coal in commercial quantities and its recently discovered tin and petroleum promise to become important products. Concurrent with the gradual development of this wealth, the mining public has ceased to regard the territory simply as an arctic province where a few placer-miners struggle with adverse conditions to secure a grub-stake or a modest fortune. Of late years there has been a large influx of capital to investigate its mineral resources, but in its area of nearly 600,000 sq. miles there still remain large, unexploited and little-known fields. This work of investigation has been carried on under adverse conditions, and reflects credit on all who have shared in it, whether prospectors, mining engineers, or geologists. It is the purpose of this paper to outline briefly what has been, and is being, accomplished toward furthering the knowledge of Alaska's mineral wealth, and in this connection to present a brief history of the operations of the United States Geological Survey in the territory. A list of the publications of the Geological Survey, which pertain to Alaska, is presented as an appendix, in the hope that it may prove useful to those who are interested in the mining of this northern province. Experimental results are presented for the rate of solution of nitrogen in a iron in the temperature range 750° to 873°C and in 6 iron in the temperature range 1410° to 1470°C. It is shown that the rate controlling process is diffusion of nitrogen into the iron. The diffusiting of nitrogen in a and 6 iron is derived from the results, and the temperature dependence of the diffusivity is represented by the equation D = 7.8 x e- 18,900/RT sq cm per sec. The solubility of nitrogen in a and 6 iron, in equilibrium with 1 atm pressure of nitrogen, has been measured. Using these results and other available data, it is found that the variation of the logarithm of nitrogen solubility with the reciprocal of absolute temperature is nonlinear. In an Appendix, some results of Darken and Smith are presented for the rate of solution of nitrogen in iron using ammonia + hyidrogen mixtures. These data also support the view that diffudsion of nitrogen in iron is the rate-controlling process when ammonia + hydrogen mixtures are used. A considerable effort has been made to obtain data on the solubility1-5 and diffusivity of nitrogen in a iron6-l2 because an understanding of the effect of nitrogen on the properties of steel must be based on an accurate knowledge of the properties of nitrogen in pure iron. However, no information is available concerning the kinetics of solution of nitrogen in a and 6 iron. Recently the authors13 have investigated the rate-controlling mechanism operating in the kinetics of solution of nitrogen in y iron. This study was directed to determine the rate-controlling processes for similar reactions with a and 6 iron as well as to establish values for the solubility of nitrogen in equilibrium with nitrogen gas in a and a iron. EXPERIMENTAL The procedure used in experiments to determine the rate of solution in cylindrical iron rods was the same as that described in a previous communication.13 Ferrovac E grade iron used in all experiments contained the following impurities in weight percent: C, 0.005; Mn, 0.001; P, 0.002; S, 0.006; Si, 0.006; Ni, 0.025; Cr, 0.002; V, 0.004; W, 0.02; Mo, 0.01; Cu, 0.001; Co, 0.01; 0, 0.007. After cleaning the surface, the iron rods were treated in an atmosphere of purified hydrogen for 17 hr before the reacting gas was introduced for known experimental times. After quenching, the samples were sectioned radially and analyzed for nitrogen. In addition to experiments using rods, iron foils were used in the measurements of solution rates of nitrogen in a iron. The foils of two different thicknesses were prepared by cold rolling Ferrovac E grade iron cylindrical rod to 0.051 and 0.152 cm. Foil samples were used in a rectangular form 5 cm long and 1.25 cm wide. The specimens were thoroughly cleaned of surface oxide with fine emery cloth and degreased with carbon tetrachloride immediately before entry into the furnace. The experimental procedure was the same as that used in the study with rods. At the completion of an experiment, the foil samples of the nitrogenized iron were analyzed for nitrogen after discarding 0.3 cm from the perimeter of the specimen. Iron foils were nitrogenized and denitrogenized in the a and 6 range with a gas mixture of 95 pct N and 5 pct H for times varying from 5 min to 2 hr. Results obtained for the average composition of nitrogen in iron for these experiments are presented in Fig. 1. Prior to the denitrogenization experiments, the samples were saturated with nitrogen at 1000°C and 0.67 atm N, giving a uniform nitrogen concentration of 0.0204 pct. According to the known a-y phase boundary in the Fe-N system,14 this composition lies within the ferrite region at temperatures 750" to 850°C. Use of this initial nitrogen content insured that reaction occurred between the gas and a single solid phase, a iron. Examples of the results for the mean concentrations of nitrogen in cylindrical iron rods, 0.356 cm radius for both the a and 6 ranges are given in Fig. 2. Typical examples of the results obtained for the radial distributions of nitrogen in rods are presented in Fig. 3. THE application of aviation to mining and petroleum operations, on the basis of economy and attainment, has become a demonstrated fact. According to Dominion Government records, 30 Canadian companies engaged in air transportation with northland mining camps, carried 13,000 tons of freight in 1935, and in 1936 carried 16,000 tons. In addition, many mining companies used planes to transport prospectors with canoes, outboard motors, gasoline drums and supplies to remote locations, and one company maintained a plane to take radium-bearing ore from its mine on Great Bear Lake nearly 1000 miles south to the rail- way at Waterways, Alberta. Heavy pieces of mining machinery weighing 2 tons are being carried by Ford trimotor planes over the Andes, at an altitude of not less than 15,000 feet. At Bulolo, New Guinea, 17,500 tons of disassembled gold-dredging equipment has been flown over inaccessible terrain, while supplies and building materials for a community of 1000 whites have been transported by airplane. A 3 1/2-ton shaft was carried on one notable trip, while at another time an automobile, 2 tons of rice and a large safe went over the mountains in one plane. Fig. 1 shows an electric generator that was carried by plane to Bulolo. Many large American oil companies operated fleets of planes during 1936, ranging from fast, luxurious air liners for executives to elaborate geological prospecting units, ambulance planes, freight carriers and pipe-line repair crews. According to the U. S. Geological Survey, commercial firms photographed 16,291 square miles during 1935, while the Government compiled from aerial photographs by the Geological Survey in the United States 85,544 square miles. It was found that information could be determined in a fraction of the time required by surface methods. However, sounding a word of caution, a Commonwealth of Australia government report on aerial survey operations had this to say: It is necessary to repeat ad nauseam that aerial photographic survey is in no sense a substitute for geological investigation, though it is a very valuable adjunct thereto, and greatly facilitates and accelerates geological mapping. CERTAIN dusts are dangerous when inhaled, but most hazardous of all dusts are quartz or other forms of pure crystalline silica. The inhalation of dusts containing silica in combination with other elements gives rise to changes in the lung which differ from those produced by pure silica. As a generality, silicates are less dangerous than pure crystalline silica and vary greatly among themselves in harmfulness. Repeated analyses have shown that approximately 70 per cent of the total number of particles involved in any dust-producing operation are below 1 to 2 microns in diameter. (A micron is. approximately 1/25,000 in.) Similar studies of dusts recovered from silicotic lungs post mortem have demonstrated essentially the same size frequency distribu-tion, except that the upper limit of size retained in the air sacs is approxi-mately 10 microns. Experiments carried on by Gardner and the author have further demonstrated that greater changes were produced by a fixed weight of very fine quartz particles (2 to 3 microns and smaller) than by the same weight of slightly larger particles (8 to 10 microns). Any attempt to control a dust hazard should therefore be directed toward the removal from the working atmosphere of particles less than 10 microns in size, and particularly those below 3 microns. All industrial hygienists agree on this matter, but there remains considerable dispute as to the lower limit of particle size capable of causing injury. It has been gen-erally conceded, however, that particles of harmful dusts smaller than ¼ to ½ micron are not essentially concerned in the development of pulmonary fibrosis. This opinion is partly substantiated by the existence of large numbers of these small particles in practically all atmospheres that are, not associated with any known hazard. Such particles are so small that they have very little mass, fail to settle even in quiet air, and probably are not easily retained in the lung. Until further research proves that they are involved in the dangers provoked by the inhalation of certain dusts, engineers will generally agree that it is better to dis-regard them.

A froth flotation plant to recover byproduct molybdenite must be designed specifically for the selected separation process and the type of ore being treated. However, some general rules concerning byproduct molybdenite plant design can be suggested that would be valid for most processes. The term byproduct molybdenite in this paper is limited to the recovery of molybdenite from copper porphyry ores, which essentially amounts to selectively separating molybdenite from copper and iron sulfide concentrates. In addition, most of the discussions would apply only to the almost universally used approach of floating the molybdenite and depressing the copper and iron sulfide minerals. Thickener It is considered essential that the feed to a byproduct molybdenite plant be thickened prior to being treated for molybdenite recovery for the following reasons: 1) Thickening allows the rougher and any preconditioning stages to be operated consistently at the optimum percent solids. 2) Generally, the size of equipment used for pretreatment and the rougher flotation is considerably smaller and less expensive than if the copper flotation concentrates were treated directly. 3) The removal of as much water as practical by thickening removes flotation reagents added in the copper flotation circuit, especially frother which can be quite troublesome in a byproduct molybdenite plant. Although thickening of the molybdenite plant feed has long been recognized as necessary to optimum metallurigcal results, very often this area has been designed poorly. The thickener should be sized so that it can produce a consistent thickened product containing 60 to 65% solids without the use of flocculants. Some plants are only able to thicken to 45 to 50% solids consistently while other plants let the percent solids vary from 45 to 60% over a 24-hr period. While the former is more desirable than the latter, in many cases better metallurgical results could be obtained if the percent solids could be held consistently close to 60%. Probably the simplest and most satisfactory system of handling the thickener underflow is to spigot it into a sump, using a sphincter type valve for the orifice, controlled by a density meter. Another satisfactory approach is to use an ODS type pump to meter the underflow. There are other methods of handling thickener underflow which work satisfactorily as long as the amount of copper concentrates entering the thickener is relatively uniform. However, they often fail to operate satisfactorily when there are large fluctuations in the thickener feed rate due to fluctuations in ore tonnage and/or copper grade. If the percent solids in the plant feed could be held close to 65%. There is the possibility the molybdenite plant tailing would not have to be thickened prior to the copper filter plant. This means that the molybdenite rougher float would have to be conducted at 45 to 50% solids with all the cleaner tailings returned to the rougher for dilution. Admittedly, in some situations this approach would be impossible, but if capital or plant area is limited, it should be considered.

A two-phase distributed-parameter model of the flotation process has been extended to allow consideration of the important process parameter, concentrate grade. A simple expression is presented for the grade of concentrate in terms of the zeroth and first moments of the concentrate distribution. An example is given for a binary ore containing two pure minerals each having nondistributed rate constants. For extend-ing the model to the distributed rate constant case, a cubic polynomial zoas utilized to simulate the feed distribution. One particular example is considered and grade-recovery curves are generated to show the dependence of such curves on the initial feed distribution. Operating flotation plant engineers have traditionally evaluated plant performance in terms of the recovery of valuable mineral and the grade of the concentrate. In both operation and research, grade-recovery relationships have been used as a guide for selecting flotation conditions. Weissl illustrated the use of grade-recovery curves in plant operation and considered the grade-recovery relationship to be a metallurgical one. The extensive experimental work of Chi" using standard batch flotation tests on iron ores shows that, even with extensive statistical correlation of data, little insight can be gained into the basic fundamentals of these relations. Such relations must depend on the kinetic behavior of the various mineral species in the flotation circuit. In his flotation text book, Gaudin3 considered the relationship of recovery and of product grade to flotation kinetic indices, but he did not extend his calculations to yield grade-recovery relations. Although Gaudin used a simplistic model for his analysis, he did recognize that variations in flotation rates must result from variations in locking, surface heterogeneity, particle size and shape, among other things. In a recent paper,' we presented a model of the flotation process that could be readily analyzed with an analog computer. This model combines the concept of a distributed set of rate constants"" with that of the two-phase flotation model,8" resulting in a model more powerful and flexible than previous ones. The purpose of the present paper is to show how this model can be used to generate grade-recovery curves and to determine the dependence of such curves on the various kinetic parameters. In this paper, the model will be limited to the semi-batch case, but extension to the continuous case is a straightforward step.

The object of the following is to discuss a few of the problems encountered in the practical field application of reflection seismology. Very little has been published on this phase of the work and it is to be hoped that discussions will be presented by many seismologists who have met with these problems in the field. No attempt will be made to discuss the general principles of reflection prospecting, nor to outline the general field procedure. These phases have been presented more or less in detail in previous publications1 while economy of space and time prevents their being repeated or amended here. If, in the following pages, some criticism is offered of those who have already given their time and efforts to present valuable papers on reflection shooting, we trust that it will be accepted in the constructive light under which it is offered. We do not wish to give the impression that the following paragraphs represent ultimate achievement in field procedure; they are presented more to illustrate methods we have found satisfactory thus far. We believe that the following three subjects are inexorably linked with the continued future successes and more widespread use of the reflection method which, at the present time, is the most

Most bituminous coal mined near Eastern industrial areas requiring high-Btu pipeline gas is caking and therefore unsuitable for fixed-bed pres- sure gasification by present techniques. If the caking property of such coal can be destroyed, the resulting fuel can be gasified in a fixed bed at pressure with steam and oxygen as a preliminary step in making a high-Btu gas. To find a practical way to convert strongly caking coals of granular or small lump size to noncaking fuel was the object of this study. In previous work, strongly caking coals of 1/8- to 1½ -in. size were converted to a noncaking coal char by treatment in a static bed in about 3 hours1 and coal of 18-100 Tyler mesh in a fluidized bed in about 5 min.2 An inert gas such as steam, nitrogen, carbon dioxide or a mixture of all three with a small amount of oxygen was used in both studies. In our work a strongly caking bituminous coal from the Pittsburgh seam of 4-8 Tyler mesh size was converted to a noncaking form in free-fall in about 2 sec by dropping it through a countercurrent flow of steam containing 4% to 7% oxygen at 1150º-1200°F and 300 psig. This method should also be applicable to smaller-sized material.

On weekends things get pretty interesting out our way because the fleet is usually in. Our No. 2 son is now based at New London, which Isn't far from here, and he brings his friends home. No. 1 son is a re- cent Navy veteran, and he lives at home. It is just as well that the Pentagon can't hear what is said. This is all aside from the point except that last Friday evening, Dave Meinhard, a redheaded nukie (nuclear sub crewman) from Indiana, commented on our late arrival home In obvious need of a pick-me-up. "Just like my dad; but he has it rougher than you. We live in La Porte, Ind., and every day he drives 35 minutes to work at Bridgeman, Mich., and loses an hour on the time zone. It's really exhausting. You should see him." We feel very sympathetic. He should receive extra pay. However, extra pay benefits are hard to come by although the reverse comes relatively easy. Requirements concerning determination of geometric characteristics and estimate of reserves and grade may in various mineral deposits significantly differ and by no means can be completely envisaged. Therefore, program writing which would in advance meet all requirements is from a practical point of view impossible. Programming for each particular project is also unacceptable solution, due to many facts, among which is ever growing scope of work and the terms to be met. Therefore, conventional method of programming proved to be ineffective. The team of the Mining Institute experts came to the conclusion that the solution of facing problems lies in the idea of introducing specialized programs, instead of complex ones. Each of them represents a functional entirety. Procedure of complete mineral deposits computer processing is described by a problem-oriented programming language which was designed for that particular application. One or more than one specialized programs are called by one instruction so that the program in that language can have a few hundred time less instructions than an equivalent FORTRAN program. Besides description of the program system and programming language the paper also covers some aspects of its application in solving complex problems.

THE third year of Government exploration f or potash by the U. S. Geological Survey and-the U. S. Bureau of Mines under the authorization of the act approved June 25, 1926 (Public 424-69th Cong.) is drawing to a close. The results thus far obtained are thought to be sufficiently interesting and satisfactory to justify the presentation of a brief preliminary account of the work. REVIEW OF EARLIER EXPLORATION The general geologic similarity of the Permian basin of Texas and New Mexico to the potash field of Germany had long ago suggested the possibility of the presence of potash salts somewhere in that basin, but petroleum exploration was then making little headway there and the necessary data could not be obtained. The discovery by Udden in 1912 of potash in brine from the Spur well in Dickens County, Texas, was the first direct evidence of its presence. In 1915-17 the U. S. Geological Survey drilled a test well with standard tools at Cliff side near Amarillo, but failed to find potash. Nevertheless, an observer has been kept in the field, at first in cooperation with the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology but since 1922 by the Survey alone, to `secure data and samples from oil and gas tests. Since the discovery of oil in Reagan County in 1923 exploration by drilling has been rapidly extended to many parts of western Texas and southeastern New Mexico. The identification of the potash-bearing mineral polyhalite was first announced by the Geological Survey in June, 1921, the material having come from cuttings from the Bryant well in Midland County and the Burns well in Dawson County, Texas. Successive discoveries and announcements of similar purport aroused widespread interest in potash exploration, which culminated in the action by Congress already noted.

At the Gateway Coal Co.'s mine, about 70 miles above Pittsburgh's Point on the Monongahela River, a battery of television cameras stands guard over what is billed as the longest conveyor belt system ever installed in a coal mine. In all, this system consists of 9% miles of 42- in. and 48-in. wide belting, and is capable of transporting 500 tph at a speed of 625 fpm from working face to the tipple located outside the mine. Gateway Coal, located near Waynesburg, Pa., is owned jointly by Jones & Laughlin. Steel Corp. (64% %), Pittsburgh Steel Co. (22lh%), and Shenango Inc. (13%). Managed by J & L, the mine is under a long-term lease from the Hillman Coal and Coke Co., which formerly operated it as the Emerald mine. Hillman produced 700,000 tons per year of metallurgical-grade coal from this mine, but since J & L et al. took over in 1962, annual output has increased to 1.7 million tons. Mine capacity will reach its peak early in 1964 when total production hits an annual rate of 3.1 million tons.

A heat transfer study was made of hot gas injection into oil shale through wells interconnected by vertical fractures. This analysis involved the simultaneous numerical solution of a nonlinear, second-order partial differential equation that describes two-dimensional conduction heat transfer in oil shale and a nonlinear first-order partial differential equation that describes convection heat transfer in the fractures. Three nonlinear, temperature-dependent coefficients were used in this work; they are thermal conductivity, thermal capacity and retorting endothermic heat losses of oil shale. Vertical fractures were considered to be of finite height. Although vertical conduction heat transfer was not considered, an estimate of the error resulting from this limitation was made. The effects of injected gas temperature, injection rate, system geometry, cyclic injection and time upon retorting efficiency were investigated. Results from this study show that the rate of retorting oil shale is a direct function of both injection temperature and rate, and the theoretical producing air-oil ratio:(AOR) is an inverse function of temperature. Retorting rates are constant until "breakthrough" of the 700 F isotherm at the producing well, assuming constant injection parameters. Retorting rates for bounded systems are higher than the analogous unbounded systems and likewise AOR's are less. The use of an alternating injection-soak routine with high injection rates is less efficient than continuous injection at lower rates. These results indicate that injection temperatures on the order of 2000F or greater may give theoretical AOR's in the economic range. INTRODUCTION Over half of the known oil shale reserves are located in the U.S., and most of them lie in the Piceance Creek basin of Western Colorado. The Colorado oil shale outcrops on the edges of the Piceance Creek Basin. At the outcrops the shale beds are relatively thin, from 25 to 50 ft thick. In the center of the basin the oil shale is as great as 2,000 ft thick and is covered with 1,000 ft of overburden. It has been estimated that there are over 1,000 billion bbl of oil in shales having an oil content over 15 gal/ton in this basin. Oil shale does not contain free oil but an organic matter called kerogen. Kerogen yields petroleum hydrocarbons by destructive distillation. It must be heated to approximately 700F, at which temperature it decomposes into shale oil, gases and coke. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and, more recently, oil companies have conducted considerable research on surface retorting methods to economically recover oil from this shale. Another approach to exploit the oil shale deposits, in particular that portion having 1,000 ft of overburden, is to retort the oil shale in place and produce the liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons through wells drilled into the shale. Some research has been done on this approach.l,2 There are several variations to the in situ retorting approach. These variations fall into one of two groups, depending upon the geometry of the system: (1) retorting in a highly fractured or broken up matrix; (2) retorting from single fractures between production and injection wells. The latter is the group studied. Several investigators,3-6 using various assumptions, have studied flow of heat through horizontal systems. The objective of this work was to make a heat transfer study of in situ retorting oil shale by hot gas injection through wells interconnected by single vertical fractures of finite height.
