"Several laboratory modeling programs have been conducted to investigate the mechanisms associated with internal erosion of dam embankments and foundations. The investigation consists of developing laboratory devices to model three separate mechanisms associated with process: 1) contact erosion along bedrock joints, and 2) piping into an open bedrock defect. The contact erosion device subjects the soil above a bedrock joint to high velocity flows in the joint. The erosion into a bedrock defect device examines a number of static and transient hydraulic conditions to study the mechanisms associated with this type of erosion. Numerous tests have been conducted using both devices. The results of the modeling will be discussed along with a discussion of how this information could be used in future dam design and risk assessment studies.IntroductionA series of laboratory modeling programs were performed to assess the seepage and internal erosion behavior of several man-made and natural structures within dams and their foundations. Each model was performed on a “bench scale” and depicted an isolated location where internal erosion was likely to occur. The models were subjected to hydraulic boundary conditions to simulate the in-situ conditions so that the processes of internal erosion could be observed. Two laboratory devices were developed to model conditions depicting 1) contact erosion along a bedrock joint in contact with a dam embankment, and 2) backward erosion (piping) into an open bedrock defect (joint, solution void, etc.).Embankment dams often have rock foundations containing defects which may detrimentally impact future performance. Further, there are existing foundations which contain rock defects that may already be detrimentally impacting the dams; however, due to the inherent aspects of the mechanism, the signs of distress may not have propagated to the surface and thus not observed during inspections. A better understanding of the mechanisms which are influenced by, and impose their influence upon, rock defects will enhance the ability of dam safety professionals to analyze the risks associated with internal erosion due to rock defects, increase our ability to monitor and successfully initiate earlier detection, and also increase our ability to design remediation methods to contend with rock defect failure modes."

This paper discusses the application of deep CFA piles for the foundation of structures in different ground stratifications with a focus on the application in Queensland region. Design, construction techniques and quality measures implemented during these procedures are described. Testing methods and verification of capacity, integrity and performance of these piles are also demonstrated. Case studies for this application are presented with an appreciation of this solution within the provided project conditions of each case. Examples of successes and challenges encountered over the course of application of deep CFA in Queensland are mentioned. Limitations of the technique and less favourable situations for its implementation are also highlighted.

"The Oxford Hydroelectric Station was a unique project that incorporated a variety of dam strengthening methods to stabilize the facility in order to meet the standards required by Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The dam stability and Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) remediation work consisted of (1) construction of a new emergency spillway; (2) installation of 75 high capacity rock anchors; (3) construction of an anchored concrete powerhouse buttress; (4) construction of cast-in-place and sheetpile flood walls; and (5) design and construction of a permanent soil nail wall. INTRODUCTIONThe Oxford Hydroelectric Station is one of 11 hydroelectric facilities owned and operated by Duke Power along the Catawba/Wateree River. The Catawba River originates in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains just west of Morganton, North Carolina. The river flows east out of the mountains and, at a point just below the Oxford Dam, the Catawba River turns and heads southeast. The Catawba River continues to flow southeast past Charlotte and into South Carolina where it eventually becomes the Wateree River. The Wateree River eventually flows in to the Atlantic Ocean.Located a few miles east of Hickory, North Carolina, the Oxford Dam and Hydroelectric facility is in the upper reach of the Catawba River. Oxford Dam creates the third impoundment along the river known as Lake Hickory. Lake Hickory is well known locally for providing many outdoor activities such as boating, jet skiing, canoeing and fishing. The dam and powerhouse were put into operation in the spring of 1928.Key features of the dam include a short embankment section on the south end of the structure, a 391-foot (119m) long south bulkhead and powerhouse, 540-foot (165m) long gated spillway section and a 235-foot (71.6m) long north bulkhead. The maximum height of the dam is approximately 100-feet (30m) from the crest to the dam/rock interface. (See Figure 1).The work associated with this project is the result of licensing requirements of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) which mandates that all hydroelectric facilities have the capacity to safely discharge runoff created by a critical rainfall event defined as the probable maximum flood (PMF). Duke Power, a division of Duke Energy (DUKE) submitted an initial PMF report in 1992 which indicated that at the Oxford Dam would be overtopped by approximately 10-feet of water during the modeled PMF event. Given the duration and depth of the overtopping, significant damage to the facility and a possible breach could result. Therefore, modifications to the existing facility were necessary to satisfy the report of the PMF model."

"Drilled screw pile is a newly developed displacement pile foundation which has been applied in soft clay for many years. Compared with traditional circular displacement pile, It is characterized by high bearing capacity, small volume and small squeezing effects. For the purpose of investigating the squeezing effects of drilled screw pile, a full scale field monitoring test with two test piles was performed. Detailed soil horizontal displacement and pore pressure measurements were conducted in the vicinity of the two drilled screw piles during penetration and subsequent soil consolidation. It can be concluded that the horizontal displacement of the surrounding soil induced by the installation of a drilled screw pile is mainly in a circular region with a diameter of 3 m (r/D<6), and the compaction effect outside the area can be essentially negligible; The excess pore pressures measured at the same time increase with depth throughout the entire process of consolidation, and its dissipation shows an exponential decay as a function of time.INTRODUCTIONA knowledge of the displacement and stress changes induced in the soil surrounding a pile is very important for evaluating pile performance. Numerous field and laboratory research projects have examined loading conditions, total soil stresses, and excess pore pressures during and following pile installation (Pestana et al., 2002). A relatively comprehensive and detailed review of these experimental works from 1948 to 2002 was presented by Pestana et al. (2002). More recently, Xu et al. (2006) conducted a field experiment to study displacements and stresses in the vicinity of two pipe piles during their installation in a soft lightly overconsolidated clay and compared the field measurements with existing predictive methods. Abdrabbo and Gaaver (2011) collected field observation data from four different construction sites to study soil disturbance during construction of piles using continuous flight auger (CFA). They have found that the disturbed zone of soil by CFA has a conical shape and the excess pore pressure has no appreciable influence on the load capacity of the piles.Drilled screw pile (DS pile) is a kind of vibration-free, cast-in-place concrete pile. Because of the excellent bearing performance, low level of vibration pollution and negligible spoil, as well as its fast construction speed, DS pile has been widely accepted by many engineers around the world. As a new type of drilled displacement pile, the significant installation effects of DS pile on the adjacent soil have not been systematically and integrally investigated yet. Since a proper numerical simulation of the real installation process of DS pile is difficult to achieve, the investigation based on field measurements is necessary. This paper presents a field investigation of the installation effects of two DS piles on surrounding soils. Detailed horizontal soil displacement and pore pressure measurements during pile installation and subsequent soil consolidation have been conducted. Based on the monitoring data, variation of horizontal displacements and dissipation of excess pore pressures with depth and time have been analyzed. What's more, the construction machinery and technology used in DS pile installation are also simply introduced."

"This paper presents the results of a pile installation monitoring and performance assessment program for pile foundations supporting 14 piers and 2 abutments of the 1700-ft long bridge crossing over a river in Baltimore, Maryland. Dynamic measurements were conducted during installation and restrike of 16 test piles, one at each support location. The foundation piles were 30-inch diameter, 0.75 inch thick pipe piles at the piers and 24-inch diameter, 0.5 inch thick at the abutments. The piles at the piers were approximately 100 ft long and were designed to carry 260 kips service load with a factor of safety of 2.25. The piles were driven open ended into a variable site stratigraphy containing recent deposits of organic clayey silts near the mudline followed by loose to medium dense sand, with some silt, and then by soil deposits from the Cretaceous period consisting primarily of dense to very dense, poorly to well graded sands and gravels and cobbles, with occasional seams of very hard to very stiff, low to moderate plasticity silts and clays. This paper presents the approach taken to evaluate the driven index piles and to develop criteria for driving production piles. It provides the Engineer with some data on pile driveability in Cretaceous soils in the Baltimore area, soil set-up effect, and an estimate of pile capacity.INTRODUCTIONThe typical approach to pile foundation design and construction should include an indicator pile program with dynamic measurements and a static load test program. However very often paucity of funds and schedule constraints cause an owner to do away with conventional static load testing which can take $25,000 to $100,000 and several weeks per test. This paper examines an alternate (though not equivalent) truncated approach to foundation assessment and presents a case history where this approach was implemented.Dynamic measurements were conducted during pile installation for the 14 piers and 2 abutments of the new 1700-ft long bridge over a river in Baltimore, Maryland. Strain transducers and accelerometers were attached to the pile top during initial driving and restrike of 16 pipe piles. The foundation piles consisted of 30-inch outside diameter, 0.75-inch thick pipe piles at the piers and 24-inch outside diameter, 0.5 inch thick at the abutments. The piles were driven open ended into a variable site stratigraphy. The approach taken to assess the foundation performance included 1) a pre-field wave equation driveability analyses, 2) field pile driving measurements, 3) post-field Case Pile Wave Equation Analyses (CAPWAP), and, 4) revised wave equation analyses based on field and CAPWAP data. The following sections describe in greater detail each of the steps taken to assess foundation performance and the results obtained."

The Moanalua trestle spanned over Moanalua Stream, Honolulu, HI and was designed to accommodate construction of five 10 feet diameter cast in drilled hole (CIDH) piers as a part of Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) project. Due to the proximity of piers to the existing bridge, the trestle was elevated 20 feet above grade. Stratigraphy of the site consisted of shallow depth of fill and 150 feet of loose to very loose recent alluvium (soft clay) underlain with stiff to hard old alluvium (stiff clay). CIDH casings were installed by a rotator or oscillator depending on the diameter of the piers. The challenge was to design the trestle, not only for heavy gravity loads, but also to resist significant lateral loads from rotator and oscillator with minimal deflection. Series of piles, called reaction piles, were integrated into the trestle at each CIDH pier location to provide adequate lateral support for the rotator/oscillator. Due to the lack of information regarding soil Young’s modulus (E), a methodology was developed to calibrate and calculate E with two methods. Extensive analyses using LPILE and finite element analysis program, PLAXIS, were performed to model reaction piles and calculate lateral deflection. PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS The Honolulu Rail Transit includes 20-mile route and 21 stations to be built from East Kapolei to Ala Moana Center, with $1.55 billion construction budget. The project is divided into two phases as shown in Fig. 1: Phase 1 which connects East Kapolei to Aloha Stadium with expected operation in late 2020, and Phase 2 which connects Aloha Stadium to Ala Moana Center with expected operation in 2025.

Verticality data collected from panel and pile elements of seepage barrier walls describe the shape and position of those elements in three dimensions. These data are used to determine if a barrier wall is constructed as designed and if it meets the owner specifications with respect to tolerance (i.e., if each element is sufficiently close to vertical) and overlap (i.e., do adjacent elements overlap sufficiently to prevent leakage). Contractors use verticality data to confirm that their work matches the design, and owners use verticality data to verify the contractor’s work and confirm that specified criteria were met. Project Information Management Systems (PIMS) technology has been applied to the management, visualization, and analysis of verticality data. This paper will provide examples of how contractors and owners have used a PIMS to compile and synthesize data collected during excavations (e.g., from Cutter Soil Mixer and Hydromill drill rig telemetry), and from measurements of completed excavations (e.g., using the Koden ultrasonic tool), and used those data to model excavation geometry. We will present case studies of using these models to estimate backfill placement volumes, and to evaluate the verticality tolerance and overlap between elements.

"Previous studies defined Narrow Mechanically Stabilized Earth, NMSE, walls as a retaining wall with aspect ratio (wall width to its height, L/H) less than 0.70 as in traditional walls. Some studies investigated its behavior and its failure planes compared to those of traditional walls. In this paper, parametric study using finite element analysis PLAXIS, 8.2 has been introduced to discuss global factor of safety, FS, maximum horizontal displacement, Ds, maximum tension force of reinforcement element, Tmax, and active earth pressure coefficient, ka, as a function of different aspect ratio of NMSE wall, L/H, reinforcing elements spacing, S, elastic axial stiffness of reinforcement element, EA, wall batter, 1/m, soil friction angle, f, and wall height, H. The results indicated that increasing aspect ratio increases the factor of safety, maximum horizontal displacement, maximum tensile force and active earth pressure. Increasing elastic axial stiffness increases factor of safety, maximum tension force of reinforcement element while decreasing the maximum horizontal displacement.IntroductionReinforced earth is a composite geoconstruction material, which embodies two basic components; namely engineering fill and reinforcing elements. The latter one is responsible for improving the tensile and shear resistance of the soil. The soil-reinforcement technique has been in use for many geotechnical applications especially MSE walls.A narrow wall system is referred to as a MSE wall with an aspect ratio, L/H, below 0.70 that is placed in front of a stabilized wall. An example of a narrow wall system with its dimensions is illustrated in Fig. 1."

The European Federation of Foundation Contractors (EFFC) and The Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) have set up a task group to compile a Guide for Working Platforms. The first edition of this Guide has been published in January 2020. The aim of the Guide is to provide reliable methods for design, testing and verification of working platforms for construction equipment, especially in the deep foundation industry where track loads can be excessive due to the nature of its operations. The Guide has identified areas where knowledge is limited. Actual track pressure and its distribution along the length of the tracks is still not well researched. Current recommendation provided in EN 16228-1 are believed to be overly simplified and may lead to conservative requirements for working platform thickness. This paper presents results of a series of field tests where the actual track pressure of a large drilling rig during operation was measured in real time together with the deformation of the working platform. Embedded, distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) at different depths throughout the platform allowed for a three-dimensional evaluation of the platform deformation throughout the entire operation. Results will help to develop more reliable recommendations for future safety requirements of working platforms for deep foundation equipment.

"The maintenance of infrastructures has been of particular concern to the engineering community. As the world’s infrastructure expands and existing infrastructure ages, monitoring and evaluation of the structures have become more critical than ever. A large number of retaining walls, tie backs, slope stabilizations and piles are designed using pre-stressing steel. Many piles and drilled shafts are designed using reinforcing steel. There are few testing methods available to assess these tension and compressive forces. High cost, complicated equipment and limitation of space often prevent these methods from being implemented. DYWIDAG-Systems International (DSI) has been involved in the development, testing and utilization of DYNA Force® sensors to measure the force in the anchors during construction and at any time during the lifetime of the structure. They can be used for bare, epoxy-coated, galvanized and greased-sheathed steel in the bonded, un-bonded, grouted or un-grouted length of the anchor. The sensor is robust and requires no maintenance. Sensors have received attention in terms of accuracy, performance, ease in installation, durability, and cost effectiveness. This paper describes its application in tie-back and anchor force monitoring of retaining walls and bridge abutment and compression forces in drilled shaft reinforcing steel where the data were collected manually, automated and remotely.INTRODUCTIONOur infrastructure is expanding and the existing infrastructure is aging. Some structures are expensive to maintain and some occasionally fail. There is a large demand for implementing health monitoring of structures. Many tie-backs, retaining walls, dams and other geotechnical structures are post-tensioned and many of them need repair using a post-tensioned system. On many occasions during construction and service life of the structure, it is useful to know the force in the post-tensioning and anchor system. Many piles and drilled shafts are designed using reinforcing steel and the compressive forces in reinforcement are unknown. Although there are many methods to measure the tendon force, most of them are cumbersome, expensive, and the accuracy varies depending on the method used.The elasto-magnetic (EM) technology is a novel approach to monitor forces in steel elements. The DYNA Force sensor is built based on EM technology (See Fig. 1). It is composed of a primary coil and a secondary coil (sensing coil). By passing current through the primary coil, ferromagnetic material is magnetized. The sensing coil picks up induced electromotive force that is proportional to change rate of applied magnetic flux (Faraday's law) and relative permeability. As permeability of core changes, output voltage changes. The output voltage is calibrated to measure the force. A readout unit is designed to magnetically energize the steel through the sensor and measure the response of the steel to the process. The readout unit then converts the response into a direct force reading. The sensor has an embedded thermistor which allows for temperature compensation. Due to the diversity of the magnetic property of steel, calibration is done for each type of steel allowing the sensors to perform at their highest accuracy."

To facilitate the safer and more secure transportation of inmates from San Diego Central Jail to the new San Diego Courthouse, the County of San Diego committed to building a new transfer facility as part of the downtown developments. The transfer facility includes a three-story underground structure adjacent and connected to the Central Jail and a 60-ft deep, 23-ft diameter, 320-ft long tunnel. The tunnel starts at County Jail, passes underneath Western Regional Detention Facility (Old Jail) and, ultimately, connects to the State Courthouse. Condon-Johnson & Associates, Inc. (CJA) was selected to install the temporary shoring shaft for the underground structure as well as three arrays of canopy pipes to support the tunnel’s Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) construction. CJA installed the rectangular 56-ft deep access shaft shoring with three levels of bracing, and a combination of secant piles, soldier piles, and timber lagging. The shoring also included a sliding bridge at top to provide access for trucks to enter and exit from county jail during the duration of construction. Following shoring and shaft excavation, CJA installed and grouted 7-5/8” dia. canopy pipes in 3 reaches, parallel to the longitudinal design line of tunnel with a slight lookout angle. CJA installed 24 each canopy pipes, 99-ft from face of shaft at reach 1, 21 each, 80-ft length canopy pipes at reach 2, and 21 each, 75-ft length pipes at reach 3. CJA confirmed canopy pipe alignment via Inertial Sensing Gyro. To mitigate the possibility of settlements caused by the tunneling operation underneath Old Jail strip footing and grade beams, CJA also performed void fill grouting. Sleeve port grout pipes (SPGP’s) were installed inside the Old Jail basement and grouted with the use of packers as the tunneling operation passed underneath the Old Jail. In detailing various aspects of the construction, this paper aims to magnify the innovative solutions for shoring, canopy pipe installation and void fill grouting challenges as well as the state of the art quality control measures undertaken by CJA.

"An experimental program was undertaken to investigate the effects of randomly distributed basalt fibre on the index and engineering properties of Dhanori clay and to compare its performance with the properties of soil reinforced with polypropylene fibre. In the present investigation, 7 groups of soil samples were prepared at four different percentages of basalt fibre and polypropylene fibre content and tests were done for measuring their consistency limits, compaction characteristics, unconfined compression strength and consolidation properties. The test results indicate that the inclusion of basalt fibre in Dhanori clay resulted in significant improvement in properties. The improved properties are not comparable with polypropylene fibres, nevertheless, the improvement by basalt fibres is able to meet the typical design target values and the cost is very much less than synthetic fibres. More importantly, basalt fibres are environment friendly.INTRODUCTIONConstruction of buildings in low lands with engineered filling, flexible and rigid pavements for highways/airfields, and embankments for highways/railways are also part of major infrastructural development in addition to construction of tall buildings, bridges/fly overs, major dams and underground structures. The later projects require different improvement techniques than that is adopted in the former projects. Ground improvement techniques such as use of reinforcement inclusions within soil found as an effective and reliable technique. Especially such modification by fibre reinforcement, is primarily possible in engineered filling, pavements subgrade and embankments, where surface mixing is easier; and may not be feasible when stabilization/modification is required for deeper depths. In comparison with conventional reinforcement using geosynthetics (strips, geotextile, geogrid, etc.), there are some advantages in using randomly distributed fibre as reinforcement. In past few decades, the discrete fibres are simply added and mixed randomly with soil, in much the same way as cement, lime, or other additives.There are several studies (Ziegler et al. 1998; Puppala et al. 2000; Bei-xing et al. 2004; Cai et al. 2006; Tang et al. 2007, 2012, 2016; Abdi et al. 2008; Viswanadham et al. 2009; Le et al. 2015) that investigated the behaviour of polypropylene fibre-reinforced soil and reported that an increase in fibre content caused an increase in strength and shrinkage potential but brought on the reduction of swelling potential. The length of fibres had an insignificant effect on soil characteristics, whereas fibre contents proved more influential and effective. A study on rubber fibre conducted by Hambirao and Rakaraddi (2014) mentions that tensile cracking of clays can be improved with the inclusion of short rubber fibres, optimum fibre content was about 15 % of weight of soil. Several experimental studies (Babu et al. 2008; Chaple and Dhatrak 2013; Vibhakar and Nahta 2014; Soundara and Senthilkumar 2015; Goyal et al. 2015; Jayasree et al. 2014, 2015) were conducted on coir fibre-reinforced soil and concluded that it helped in reducing the swell potential and 1% fibre by weight of the soil almost doubled the CBR value. Martins et al. (2015) found that 4% of sisal fibre by weight of the soil reduced the visibility of cracks. Pillai and Ayothiraman (2012), Ayothiraman et al. (2014) and Sahu et al. (2016) have demonstrated that human hair fibres can be used to improve the properties of both fine grained and coarse grained soils."

"This paper presents the main features of the Wolf Creek Dam Foundation Remediation Project, highlighting the innovative construction approach and stressing on how the collaboration between the contractor and the owner became a key element for the success of this project.The main rehabilitation contract, $341 M, was awarded in 2008 for the construction of a 980,000 sqft concrete barrier. Most of this 2ft-wide concrete barrier wall is being built to depths reaching 277 ft using innovative construction techniques proposed by the contractor and under quality control measures that exceed by far the industry standards.The construction of the barrier wall entails the use of nine different foundation techniques which run concurrently following very stringent requirements in terms of verticality, distance between open elements, strength, permeability and dimensions that control the installation sequence of each barrier wall element.The innovative construction approach by the contractor and the collaborative efforts by the contractor and the USACE (“US Army Corps of Engineers”) have brought this unique and very difficult project to a successful completion, setting new standards in the dam foundation industry and nine months ahead of scheduleINTRODUCTIONWolf Creek Dam is on the Cumberland River in south central Kentucky. It provides hydropower, flood control, water supply, and water quality benefits for the Cumberland River system and surrounding region. The lake is a source of recreation that has attracted more visitors (4.89 million) than Yellowstone National Park (2.87 million).The dam and its adjacent reservoir reside upon a heavily Karst bedrock foundation. In late January 2007, the USACE placed the dam under a 'high risk' for failure designation. As a temporary measure, the pool elevation was lowered to 680 ft Above Main Sea Level (“AMSL”), 80 ft below its maximum capacity, with huge impacts to the local economy while the major, and ambitious, $ 594 million remediation program to bring the dam back to its full operating condition was carried out.The main rehabilitation contract of $341 million was awarded in 2008 for the construction of a 980,000 sqft concrete cut-off barrier. "A load test program was performed on two auger cast piles constructed in the Inner Coastal Plain geology of North Carolina. Both test piles were installed through Coastal Plain deposits and into underlying Piedmont residual soils; one test pile was embedded into partially weathered rock (PWR). The recommended 100-ton design load was confirmed by a test program that included instrumenting the piles with strain gages. The two piles performed differently during the load tests due to the effect of embedment into PWR. Loading Test Pile No. 1, which was not embedded into PWR, to failure at about 230% of the design compressive load allowed for evaluation of the mobilization of the ultimate shaft and end bearing resistances. Mobilization pile resistance was evaluated by comparing shaft and end bearing resistances to top of pile deflection (d) normalized by the pile diameter (D). For Test Pile No. 1, the ultimate average shaft resistance was achieved at d /D of about 7.5% and ultimate end bearing resistance at d /D of about 9.5%. Test Pile No. 2, embedded into PWR, achieved a d /D of only about 4% at 200% of the design load and was not loaded to failure. Shaft resistance was mobilized at a different rate within each individual geologic layer, i.e. ultimate shaft resistance did not occur simultaneously for all geologic layers. A modified Davisson offset using d /D of about 6.5% appears applicable for evaluating the ultimate capacity of auger cast piles in the Inner Coastal Plain.INTRODUCTIONAuger-cast-in-place (ACIP) piling was developed in the 1940’s and patented in 1956 (Neely, 1991). Since patent expiration in 1973, ACIP piles are abundantly used in the United States, particularly in the southeast. However, most literature addresses driven piles constructed in sand and clay with lesser discussion of drilled piles. Conventional design methodologies (a- method, ß-method, SPT or CPT correlations, etc.) are based on data derived from numerous projects in a great variety of geologies. O’Neil (2001) notes that there are significant levels of uncertainty in the “universal” databases as evidenced by coefficients of variation of 0.35 to 0.40 for geotechnical parameters (su, SPT-Nvalue, etc.) used to estimate pile capacities.There is a need to develop local databases developed from data obtained from load tests that measure shaft resistance and end bearing. This paper presents the results of load tests conducted on axially loaded auger-cast-in-place piles constructed in the Inner Coastal Plain geology of North Carolina. Shaft resistance, end bearing, and movements that initiated mobilization of these resistances are described. The information presented herein can be used to refine geotechnical correlations and parameters applied in auger cast pile design methodologies."

A load test program was performed on two auger cast piles constructed in the Inner Coastal Plain geology of North Carolina. Both test piles were installed through Coastal Plain deposits and into underlying Piedmont residual soils; one test pile was embedded into partially weathered rock (PWR). The recommended 100-ton design load was confirmed by a test program that included instrumenting the piles with strain gages. The two piles performed differently during the load tests due to the effect of embedment into PWR. Loading Test Pile No. 1, which was not embedded into PWR, to failure at about 230% of the design compressive load allowed for evaluation of the mobilization of the ultimate shaft and end bearing resistances. Mobilization pile resistance was evaluated by comparing shaft and end bearing resistances to top of pile deflection (?) normalized by the pile diameter (D). For Test Pile No. 1, the ultimate average shaft resistance was achieved at ?/D of about 7.5% and ultimate end bearing resistance at ?/D of about 9.5%. Test Pile No. 2, embedded into PWR, achieved a ?/D of only about 4% at 200% of the design load and was not loaded to failure. Shaft resistance was mobilized at a different rate within each individual geologic layer, i.e. ultimate shaft resistance did not occur simultaneously for all geologic layers. "Engineers and developers have witnessed the growing popularity of deep basement structures as components of urban commercial and residential developments. This is often attributed to inadequate surface parking facilities in urban centres and a somewhat popular belief that underground parking facilities improve both commercial and aesthetic values of urban structures. For many years, diaphragm walls and sheet pile walls have been widely accepted as effective deep excavation support systems for basement construction in urbanised zones. However, these are now being replaced by bored pile retaining walls as preferred earth retention systems of choice on many projects for several reasons, which may include economy, faster installation process, reduced space requirement for machinery and ancillary equipment, flexural rigidity and axial capacities.However, there are complexities associated with the use of bored pile retaining walls on urban developments. These include; limitations due to vertical and horizontal installation tolerances, which is a major issue when wall is required to provide groundwater cut-off for multi-level basements as tolerances are difficult to achieve for deep piles, uncertainty associated with the prediction of wall axial capacity as piles are rarely tested, difficulties in using temporary props as wall restraint due to restricted working spaces in urbanised zones and difficulties in adopting ground anchors as restraint due to the existence of adjacent sensitive structures in built-up areas. Such complexities have resulted in cases of failure, non-serviceability and abandonment of basement construction schemes. Therefore, overcoming the intricacies associated with the application of bored pile walls is becoming a priority to the present day basement engineer.This paper is centred on the numerical modelling, design, construction and monitoring aspects of four recent case histories of multi-level basement and marine engineering construction schemes in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, which involved the use of bored pile retaining walls. The paper highlights the various customised approaches and innovative novel solutions adopted on the sites, to mitigate risks and ultimately overcome the intricacies associated with the earth retention techniques. Simple empirical equations for developing the geometry of secant pile walls for effective groundwater cut-off are presented and validated. An alternative approach for predicting axial capacities of bored pile walls is also presented; this is shown to be considerably less conservative than a common routine design approach, while also in good agreement with observations made in a recent series of laboratory-based scale model tests."

A case history of utilizing a mat foundation enhanced with ?settlement-control? piles to support a high-rise building in Downtown Orlando is presented. Original geotechnical engineering studies, performed by others, recommended pile foundations due to difficult soil conditions and highly variable loads. The value engineering study performed by the authors provided alternative foundation system of the mat foundation enhanced by ?settlement-control? piles. The alternative foundation system required few iterations of structural and geotechnical analysis. A target stiffness for the settlement-control piles was selected by the structural engineer. Pile load tests were performed to verify the recommended pile geometry. A total of 81 auger-cast-in-place settlement-control piles 45-foot long 16-inch diameter were installed. A total of 24 columns were monitored for settlement, which showed substantially less settlement than predicted. It is the authors? opinion that the ?settlement-control? piles increased the mat stiffness, relieved the concentration of contact pressures around heavily loaded columns, and reduced potential differential settlement. Mat foundation with settlement-control piles provided border-line foundation solution between shallow and deep foundations and has the potential to be widely used in Central Florida for similar subsoil and loading conditions; however a thorough analysis using three dimensional Finite Element Modeling may be needed to refine the geotechnical evaluations.

The progressive rise of an H-pile during driving of an adjacent pile is described in this case history in which piles 15 to 18 m long were driven to end-bearing for the foundations for a 230 m long building. The use of a reaction beam-soil anchor system for compression load tests is discussed. The results of static load tests to determine pile capacity are compared with those obtained by the Pile Driving Analyzer and by theory. Unusual high temporary compressions were observed by field control staff. Proof testing was necessary to determine the need for restriking of some piles in which rise had occurred.

Analysis of piles groups loaded with large bending moments and both vertical and batter piles can be best performed by matrix analysis. In this paper, a case history about a tall marine control tower is presented. The soil conditions at the site and the results of the computer analysis of the piled foundation are summarized. It is shown that the pile loads are indeed less than the allowable load for a single pile. Pile head loads and moments are used in the analysis of the raft foundation.

"The operation of ground source heat pumps combined with foundation piles can have an effect on the thermal behaviour of the pile and the surrounding soil. This paper presents the effects of continuous heating, continuous cooling, and alternate heating and cooling operations on ground and pile temperatures as well as the thermo-mechanical behaviour of a field scale energy pile. The effect of pile operation on the ground temperatures is highest near the pile and reduces with increasing radial distance. The results of the present studies generally showed that the thermal elasticity of the pile is not affected.INTRODUCTIONGeothermal energy piles are foundation piles used as underground heat exchangers to maintain thermal comfort in buildings, via the use of ground source heat pumps (GSHPs). Ground source heat pumps are more economical and environmental friendly compared to conventional heat pumps. Energy piles can be combined with supplemental surface heaters or coolers, known as hybrid systems, for forcefully recharging the ground during non-operational times of the GSHP. Alternative heating and cooling of the GSHP improves geothermal energy usage and alleviates heat build-up in the ground and provides a balance of ground temperatures around the heat exchanger (Jalaluddin and Miyara, 2012).The temperatures induced in the piles during GSHP operation can lead to a complex response of thermal strains and stresses in the pile concrete. An assessment of the thermo-mechanical response of energy piles for various thermal loads may assist engineers in the design process. Furthermore, an assessment of ground temperatures will also highlight any potential thermal interactions with other energy piles in actual building operations.At present, the thermal strain and stress distribution in field scale energy piles has mostly been studied for continuous operation (Laloui et al., 2006; Bourne-Webb et al., 2009; McCartney and Murphy, 2012; Akrouch et al., 2014; Mimouni, 2014; Murphy and McCartney, 2014; Murphy et al., 2014; Wang et al., 2015). These studies have contributed considerably to the understanding of the axial thermal strain and stress distributions in the piles and have shown that pile thermal behaviour is mostly thermo-elastic without inducing major structural concerns.The present paper adds to the current knowledge by assessing the pile thermo-mechanical and ground thermal response for continuous and alternating thermal loads of a field scale energy pile. The operation modes studied are 24 hours continuous cooling (Faizal et al., 2015), 24 hours continuous heating, (Wang et al., 2015) and alternate heating and cooling operation (Faizal and Bouazza, 2016). The forced ground thermal recharging is done during the non-operating times of the cooling unit, simulating a solar hybrid GSHP system for a scheduled intermittent mode of operation."
