This case study presents the effectiveness of underground rock blasting to facilitate the trench cut in the hard rock layer using a conventional trench cutter for the construction of a diaphragm wall. Rock blastings are pre-performed up to the scheduled depth and then the fragmented rocks can be easily cut using a conventional trench cutter. Two trial underground rock blastings have been performed and the effectiveness of pre-blasting is presented in terms of a cutting rate, a loss of cutter heads and an amount of overbreak. Based on the results obtained from the trial underground rock blastings, the following conclusions can be appropriate: 1) A pre-blasting of hard rock layer located in depth can help to overcome the limitation of the trench cut using a conventional trench cutter. If the hard rock layer is fragmented after blasting, the fragmented rocks can be easily cut using a conventional trench cutter, 2) The speed of cutting works was accelerated and the loss of cutter heads was significantly reduced in the sections where the blastings were applied prior to cutting. 3) The amount of overbreak, expressed in terms of the amount of poured concrete, can be reduced to some extent. However, the location of blast holes in the trench can also contribute to the amount of overbreak. The closer the location of blast holes to the edge of the trench, the more extensive fractured and cracked zone can be formed on the face of the trench. This can increase the amount of overbreak if the trench is left empty for a while.

Testing was conducted at the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center for the MythBusters on three separate occasions. This testing included (1) an experiment designed to create diamond from graphite using the shock and pressure of a detonation, (2) the flattening of a car using a steel plate driven by a rocket sled, and (3) the bifurcation of a car also using a rocket sled. All tests were successful; diamond was produced following the detonation of ANFO, and extracted from a graphite / cobalt matrix. A plate was accelerated to 646 mph (1040 km/hr) using a two-stage sled system loaded with 5” (12.7 cm) high velocity aircraft rockets (HVAR) into a car, which was subsequently demolished. Finally, a steel wedge was pushed to 541 mph (871 km/hr) by a one stage sled using HVAR rockets, and was able to cleanly cut a target car in half.

Dynamite, diamond wire and hydraulic excavators overcame the most impressive building in town, working in very little spaces and on a geotechnically difficult site; moreover, a study on the dynamics and the effects of the impact of the structure, an analysis of the presence of potentially explosive dusts and an extensive vibrometric monitoring supported the design and the development of the operations.

This paper will discuss the effectiveness and the general use of improvised shaped charges. Testing was conducted by the New Mexico Tech Student Chapter of ISEE and held at EMRTC. The first series of tests conducted was to illustrate the performance of different features of the shaped charge. A PVC pipe filled with C4 with no cavity, PVC with an unlined conical cavity, PVC with a copper lined conical cavity and no standoff, and lastly a PVC pipe with a copper lined cavity and a 1.5 cone diameter standoff.

There are always security concerns when explosives are transported and stored, and these concerns are intensified in peacekeeping operations where explosives could fall into the wrong hands. MREL Specialty Explosive Products Limited has developed FIXORTM, a new approach to neutralizing landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO). The product consists of two precursors: a flammable liquid in one plastic container and a totally inert powder in another; neither of these precursors is classified as explosives. Both precursors are approved for transport by land, sea and commercial passenger airfreight. The precursors are mixed to form an explosive immediately prior to placement next to the UXO or landmine. Initiation is by blasting cap or detonating cord.

Nowadays, mining operations close to communities face increasingly challenges, especially in their drilling and blasting operations. One of the critical effects are the ground vibrations produced in its surroundings. The impact on the community must be minimized to guarantee the license to operate and, on the other hand, costs must be optimized, and an adequate fragmentation must be achieved to ensure the efficiency of subsequent processes and, consequently, to give sustainability to the business. In this regard, it is necessary that some controlled blasting technique to be performed and the utilization of advanced vibrations models. Currently, it is common in the industry either use of the double decking technique, where very low explosive charges are applied, making it necessary to use smaller drill patterns in order to keep powder factor as per design, which strongly increases the demand for drilling and a consequent impact negative on costs.

In this paper the performance effects of various shaped charge liner designs will be discussed. Several different charges will be tested and the liner design will be reviewed based on the performance in testing. The first type of shaped charge to be tested is a conical charge with dual confinement. For the purpose of this paper, dual confinement is a shaped charge with two liners but containing one explosive charge. Several charges with different dual confinement designs will be tested. Variations in configuration include charges with similar angle and similar diameter. The second type is a double conical shaped charge configuration. A double shaped charge will be considered to be two complete charges formed into a single cone. The goal of the project is to determine if any of the designs increase the efficiency and/or effectiveness of the shaped charge in comparison to the standard conical shaped charge. A standard conical charge will be detonated against a witness plate to get a standard depth of penetration or a baseline. All charges will have a seven cone diameter standoff, allowing the data to be compared to the control charge. Computer modeling will be used to predict the results of the testing that will be conducted. The actual results will be compared to the computer simulation for validation.

AEBT has been available for a couple of years and is successfully applied in Australia. Up to now it was mainly used in coal surface mining at the Australian East- Coast. Presently, the proved results reach ~ 50 % reduction of Drilling & Blasting costs and a productivity increase of between 10 and 20 %. In 2003 it was for the first time used in surface metal-mining. The mine features for the time being an extremely difficult geological environment and had above to be carried out in the transition level waste/ore. Reductions of wall control, powder factor and vibrations were the main target.

Because in Europe and in many other countries as well every new project (quarry, mine, public work) needs a risk estimation to prove its feasibility, a model to estimate flyrock risks became necessary. This paper presents the basic hypothesis which should underlay such a model to estimate statistical flyrocks range for not only some single blasts but a whole project and in particular the way to take into account rockmass or blast pattern parameters variability. It describes a first usable quantitative flyrock model based on the characteristics of the blasting plan and of the generic laws utilised in casting and selective blasting operations and on a statistical approach of rockmass. In a second step, this paper discuss an approach of risks estimation compared to the classical one used in pyrotechnics studies for explosive magazine risks assessment.

The Sarcheshmeh Copper mine will be developing its open-pit in order to reach to the remaining ore in the deposit. One of the problems regarding the development plan is the ore handling system from the pit. After its development, the pit depth and its daily production will be increased. Therefore, the present transportation system (shovel and trucks) can no longer be used efficiently. It is necessary to use a new system that can reduce transportation costs and handle the new amount of blasted material at the same time. Studies show that an in-pit crusher and conveyor belt is the most suitable system that could be used in this situation. One of disadvantages of the conveyor belt, however, is its limitation in the particle sizes that it could carry. Consequently, size distribution resulting from the fragmentation process is an important parameter in choosing an efficient conveyor belt system. The size distribution of the fragmentation process also affects the operations following blasting. The determination of this parameter allows the optimization of blast design and explosives. Hence, during this project, the size distribution of blast fragmentation in the different types of ore at the Sarcheshmeh mine was determined by the image analysis technique. Numerous digital pictures were captured of the different blasted faces to prepare a representative sample of each kind of rock. They were then analyzed using the GoldSize image analysis software. Results show that fragmentation in the blasted rock is relatively high. It is therefore expected that an appropriate conveyor belt could be selected for further developing the open-pit mine at Sarcheshmeh.

Placer Dome, US operates the Bald Mountain Mine. The Bald Mountain Mine is a surface operation located in remote northwestern White Pine County in east-central Nevada, approximately midway between Elko and Ely. The mine is in the Newark Valley along the southwestern flank of Bald Mountain a part of the Ruby Mountain range, at an approximate elevation of 7,500 ft (2,286 m). The geology at the Bald Mountain Mine is highly altered, both mineralogically, and structurally. Highwall stability and control have long been an issue at the operation, due largely to the varying geologic conditions. In some blasts as many as seven distinct geologic unconformities exist. These unconformities affect both final high wall integrities, as well as blast fragmentation characteristics. A 60 million ton (54.5 million tonnes) layback expansion of the existing “Top Pit” as well as development of a new satellite pit, “Sage Flats”, is being undertaken. Design final highwall pit slopes have been steepened from the traditional 47º to 55º in order to reduce overall ore-to-waste ratios, thereby improving economic viability for the expansion over the 4.5 year life of the project. With the increased usage of electronic detonators throughout the mining industry, mine operations staff, as well as representatives from the mines explosive supplier felt that an evaluation program incorporating electronic detonators would be warranted. The areas of focus for this evaluation would be resultant highwall pre-split integrities, peak particle velocity measurements (both near field and far field), frequency measurements, loader productivity, and visual interpretation of the results. The mine incorporates 25 ft (7.6 m) benches and uses separate trim blasts in conjunction with production blasts in order to reduce blast effects along final highwalls. Hole diameters in production blasts are 7? ” (200 mm). Typical production blast patterns are 18 ft x 18 ft (5.5 m x 5.5 m), drilled in a square pattern configuration. Shot sizes vary greatly, ranging from 200 holes to as many as 800. Bulk low percentage ANFO/emulsion blends are utilized as the redominant blasting agent. In this paper, a numerical modeling methodology is used to investigate damage to rock at distances of greater than 10 m (30 ft) from a blast. Two applications of the model are demonstrated. First, the method is applied at a zinc mine to investigate the effects of pit blasting on underground stopes. The model predictions are compared with the scaled distance formula. Next, the model is used to investigate a common problem in which unfavorable jointing creates a rock wedge on the bench above a blast. The numerical predictions of wedge stability are compared to the wedge energy model described by Wong & Pang (1992).

Rio Tinto Bingham Canyon Mine started its South Wall Push Back (SPB) in 2011. This push back will mine through the only road to the pit bottom (the 10%). The pit bottom is the main ore sector for the mine and supplies about 80 to 90% of the ore. In late 2017 the mine set off a blast in SPB that created a small wedge failure on the high wall between SPB and the 10%. This wedge failure released a rock approximately 20 minutes after that blast that rolled down the wall landing on the 10% near and then contacting a light vehicle

A study conducted at a mine site that used traditional field surveying and physical hole spot markings bench marked their combined drill and blast performance. The analysis of the operational expenditure (OPEX) improvement determined there were many measurable cost improvements. A primary factor that most operations have to deal with is over drilling of holes. This alone impacts the cost due to nonproductive labor allocations, excessive explosive costs, increased drill tool costs, increased drilling costs and has an impact on the downstream operation cost such as digging the shot material. Other related investigations also show a downstream impact of poor fragmentation on digging payload tonnes, cycle times, haulage payload tonnes, time to load a truck and the number of passes to load the tuck. The intent of this presentation is to draw attention to aspects of mining we understand but may be missing the big picture effects, such as the ability to reduce the operational expenditures consistently to impact the bottom line. The target audience is across the board from owner operators, drill and blast contractors to blasting contractors. Everyone can benefit from these improvements.

This project will report findings on the establishment of a new surface test site at the Colorado School of Mines Edgar Mine. Concerns over the blast effects on site neighbors prompted the study to be conducted. The current maximum charge weight of 20-lb was studied to ensure that all environmental effects were within the range prescribed by state and federal regulations. Geophone locations were surveyed using GPS and monitored using Instantel Minimate Plus instruments. Distances and orientation of measurement sites to the test site were varied according to the local geography and geology. Weather conditions were also observed and recorded during all tests. Neighbor complaints were recorded and taken into account during analysis. Current results show that the current charge limit results in a safety factor of over 200 for all blasting activities at the site. Data collection is ongoing and a review is to be conducted annually.
