"The uranium deposits upon which the Rabbit Lake project story is based are located at the eastern margin of the Athabasca Basin just west of Wollaston Lake in northern Saskatchewan. This paper provides a general review of the exploration history for the major deposits and the influence of an expanding geological data base, which served to guide the continuing exploration programs.A brief description of each of the deposits is provided in order of their discovery and with emphasis upon their relative geological and mineralogical characteristics.The Rabbit Lake and Eagle Point orebodies are monometallic uranium deposits localized by thrust faults within the Aphebian Wollaston Group. The Cof/ins Bay A-zone, B-zone, and D-zone are polymetaflic U, Ni, As, Co (Au , Ag) deposits located within the Helikian Athabasca Group at its unconformable contact with the underlying Wollaston Group. INTRODUCTIONThis paper demonstrates the importance of applying the accumulated geological knowledge, gained through the exploration, mining, and development process, to the ongoing success of exploration programs. To emphasize this point, the basic geology of each of the major Rabbit Lake area deposits will be presented in chronological order of their discovery and subsequent development. These depos its include Rabbit Lake, Collins Bay A-zone, B-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point. The geological descriptions are based primarily upon the detailed observations of many current and former geologist s employed by both Gulf Minerals Canada Limited and Eldorado Resources Limited. Much of the early historical data was obtained from Dr. E.E.N. Smith, formerly with Eldorado Resources Limited. Regional GeologyThe Rabbit Lake area which includes the Rabbit Lake, Collins Bay A-zone, B-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point deposit s, is located on the eastern edge of the Athabasca Basin close to the western shores of Wollaston Lake (Fig. I). The area is in the Churchill Province of the Canadian Shield within the Wollaston lithostructural domain, at the eastern edge of the Athabasca Group. The uranium deposits occur within both the Wollaston Group metasedimentary assemblage of probable early Aphebian age, and the diagenetic ally altered quartz sandstones and conglomerates of the Athabasca Group of Paleohelikian age. Both units unconformably overlie granitoid gneisses interlayered with metasediments and a graphitic iron formation all believed to be of Archean age. All uranium depo sits in the Rabbit Lake area occur in close proximity to the Paleohelikian - Aphebian or Paleohelikian - Archean unconformity."

"Kidd Creek Mines places approximately 10 000 tonnes of consolidated rockfill on a daily basis. Consolidated rockfill is comprised of sized aggregate mixed with different ratio and amounts of binders. Consolidated rockfill, with closely controlled specification, is employed for subsequent pillar recovery and improved passive active/ ground support. With the same amount of cementing agents consolidated rockfill mass yields a higher, compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, cohesion, and angle of friction compared to a typical cemented hydraulic fill mass.The consolidated rockfill at Kidd Creek Mines is designed to sustain not only the gravitational loading of the overlaying fill material, but also to some extent the dynamic loading applied during blasting of the adjacent stopes and/or pillars.The quality control of materials used in Kidd Creek's rockfill system could be effected in three stages of handling: (1) at the surface backfill plant; (2) during transportation; and (3) placement of the fill.The emphasis in this paper is placed on individual stope backfill design and quality control measures at Kidd Creek Mines to place fill in large-scale open stopes which eventually could be exposed on all four walls during pillar recoveries."

"AZ31 is the one of the most popular magnesium alloy using in the modern industry. It is well known, that compared with steel, magnesium alloys posse better properties, such as light mass, high specific strength or thermal conductivity. It should be noted that their application is limited by poor corrosion resistance. In this work the corrosion behavior of AZ31 magnesium alloy as cast and after heat treatment were described with the use of testing in neutral salt spray atmosphere.To characterise corrosion resistance and describe layers built on the surface it was necessary to do the metallographic observations with the use of optical microscopy. After that influence of heat treatment for AZ31 corrosion resistance was examined. Measurements were conducted by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and by neutral salt spray tests in artificial atmosphere. Surface and cross section morphology after removal of corrosion products were observed with the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM).The weight loss measurements show that there is no significant difference between alloys as cast and with following heat treatment.INTRODUCTIONMagnesium and magnesium alloys are popular in modern industry because of the low density and good formability. Magnesium alloys are described by few properties which have got significant influence for their application in transportation and electronics industries (Feliu & Liorente, 2015). Their wide application is limited by poor corrosion resistance. As it is well known Mg is one of the chemically most active metal. Corrosion resistance of Mg alloys depends on several factors, such as impurities, chemical composition or working conditions (Cheng, Qin, Wang, & Zhang, 2009). That all causes that there are many different ways to find well defined and good solution of magnesium alloys processing to improve their corrosion resistance.There are many different versions about the influence of aluminum on the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy. It is known that intermetallic compounds such as Mg17Al12 due to ß-phase content plays the minor role for corrosion resistance. It is proved ß-phase acts as cathode and it has good ability to build passive layer in broad pH ranges. However it should be noted that mentioned behavior depend on size and distributions of ß-phase in the microstructure (Singh, Singh, & Das, 2015)."

"The paper deals with the impact of fleet imbalance on a deterministic evaluation of shovel fleet productive capacity. It shows that if the fleet imbalance is overlooked, then estimated fleet productive capacity will be overrated.The paper shows that fleet imbalance inflates utilization, and care must be taken when using such statistics which are derived from reported field-equipment-hours. It shows that the utilization must be deflated by a factor called 'balancing efficiency"" in order to estimate shovel productive capacity correctly. The paper also shows how fleet imbalance can be controlled by managing idle time or downtime in an actual operation.The technique used for measuring the balancing efficiency factor is based on statistical analysis of equipment utilization."

This paper summarizes the computer applications in open-pit mine planning at the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC). A brief history of the use of computers at IOC is given, and a description of the existing facilities is outlined. The following systems are discussed: storage and retrieval of geological data; geotechnical data analysis; long-term grade and tonnage forecasting; ore grading; and open-pit mine design. Justification for using computers in open-pit mine planning is given, and possible future areas of application are considered.

"The area of uranium deposition is situated within the Churchill Province on the western edge of the Wollaston Iithostructural domain where it underlies the eastern edge of the Helikian Athabasca Formation. The Collins Bay deposit is 6 miles north-northeast of the Rabbit Lake mine. Two principal zones of uranium mineralization are described.The ""A"" zone is a partly eroded, high-grade pod of metal oxide and arsenides sheathed by clay-like minerals. It trends north-northeast and lies under 25 to 40feet of water. Uranium mineralization is localized at or adjacent to the unconformity between the Athabasca Formation and the basement rocks. The basement comprises a granitoid Archean terrain overlain by paragneisses of the Aphebian Wollaston Group. ""A "" zone ore contains phyllosilicates, quartz, pitchblende, rammelsbergite, pararammelsbergite, carbonaceous material, galena, gersdorffite, niccolite, carbonate and a trace of sphalerite.The ""B "" zone lies 6,000 ft south of the ""A "", and subcrops under till cover. It is a partly eroded zone composed of metal oxide and arsenides which occur within variably altered Athabasca Formation. Minerals recognized are phyllosilicates, pitchblende, niccotite, gersdorffite, millerite, carbonaceous material, pyrrhotite, skutterudite and a trace of galena. The Athabasca Formation varies from 90 to 160ft thick. Granitoid gneisses of probable Archean age and paragneisses of the Wollaston Group underlie the deposit. An easterly dipping thrust fault transects its length.The deposit is typical of the ""unconformity-type"" uraniumnickel deposits of the Athabasca Basin. Observed features fit well with the ""diagenetic-hydrothermal"" model for such deposits, as envisioned by Hoeve and Sibbald (/978)."

In presenting this overview, it is the intent to stimulate further interest as well as provide a framework from which further in-depth investigation can be initiated.Topics which will be covered include rope cores, lubrication practices, loop dividers, rope failures, etc.IntroductionThe first friction hoist was designed in Belgium in J862 by Lemielle. However, it was not until 1877 when Carl Frederich Koepe installed a friction winder sheave at the Hanover Colliery in Germany, that the design was given serious consideration. The winder consisted of a motor-powered sheave over which a single rope was installed, and the end s attached to two conveyance s. Beneath the conveyances a rope was connected, designed to reduce the chance of slip. This was the first balance rope.This earl y mod el is a far cry from the modern tower or ground mounted Koepe winders employed throughout the mining industry today. There have been vast improvements in all aspects of the Koepe winders. One such improvement is in the balance ropes used. This particular area will be concentrated on, with emphasis on selection, maintenance and field experience.SelectionThe sale purpose o f a balance rope is to counter the head rope weight. Obviously then, in selection o f balance ropes, weight is of primary concern. Usually the head and balance ropes are equal in weight. However, sometimes balance ropes which are 5 to 10070 heavier than the head ropes are employed. These reduce horsepower demands during peak acceleration periods, and assist in overcoming inertia during retardation periods. As well, it is sometimes preferred to reduce the balance rope weight, in order to compensate for the eventual weight buildup of lubricant, dirt and debris."

"The Guide to the Evaluation of Gold Deposits reviews the successive evaluation steps in the domains of geology, engineering, and economics. The Guide analyzes, in a systemic perspective, the sequence of exploration, development, and evaluation work required to bring a mineral deposit to production. The aim is to identify the metal/mineralization losses and ore dilution that each work step contributes to the evaluation and mining process. The procedure allows one to maximize the income and profits of a mining operation, and to reduce the risks of financial losses tied to investment decisions in the mining sector. For greater efficiency, the criteria of reserve estimation and classification should be integrated with the evaluation steps and methods. At earlier stages of deposit development, when quantitative knowledge is available mainly on the geological axis, the term ""delimited mineral deposit"" should be used. The term ""reserve"" should be used only in an operating mine or in a mining project, when information in the geological, engineering, and economic domains is adequate to ensure technical and financial feasibility. ""Reserves"" are by definition ""mining reserves"". Each category of proven/probable reserves and measured/indicated deposits should be subdivided into two classes to express better the many steps of mineral valuation. The category of ""possible reserves"" shall be replaced by that of ""inferred mineralization"". This system, derived from the Australasian Code, can easily be integrated into current practices of the exploration and mining industry within a short timeframe. The proposal to develop the use of the margins of error of the estimates at a confidence level of90% should be viewed in a longer timeframe. Establishing the precision of the mineral inventories and distinguishing between categories and classes by means of the margin of error will require more work and a longer break-in period.SOMMAIRELe ""Guide d’évaluation des gisements d'or"" analyse, dans une approche systémique, les travaux d'évaluation et de mise en valeur des gisements minéraux dans l'axe de la géologie, dans l'axée l'ingénierie et dans I ‘axe de l'économique. Plusieurs essais démontrent que le système propose, qui s'inspire du Code australasien, peut facilement et rapidement s'intégrer dans les pratiques de l'industrie. II pourrait également contribuer à une standardisation des méthodes et des nomenclatures à l'échelle internationale. "Froth stability is critically important for an effective separation of fine and ultrafine particles using column flotation. While a desirable froth stability is required to facilitate the drainage of entrained gangue particles for secondary cleaning, excessively stable froths could create problems in separation efficiency and down-stream processing. In this work, we demonstrate that a stable foam was produced using a poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) solution at the temperatures below the critical solution temperature. In contrast, very little foam was produced at the temperature above the critical solution temperature (~32 oC) of PNIPAM. We can also tune the foam stability by changing the temperature of wash water. When warm water of temperature of 50 oC was applied, the foam collapsed and diminished. This is probably attributed to the switching of PNIPAM molecules from coiled to a globule conformation as the temperature is increased. Our results indicate that the foamability and foam stability can be tuned by tempartureresponsive PNIPAM. This is the first time that thermo-responsive PNIPAM has been shown to have potential as a modifier of froth stability in column flotation.INTRODUCTIONIn mineral processing, column flotation has become a more prevalent process in the separation of fine mineral particles (typically < 100µm). Traditional flotation cells are sometimes less efficient in selective separation of ultra-fine particles (Kohmuench et al., 2009). The efficiency of flotation columns is dependent on the froth stability at the top of the cell to drain the unwanted gangue particles entrained in the froth. The greater froth height in flotation columns, compared to mechanical flotation cells, gives a longer froth residence time, allowing more of the drainage process to take place before the froth reports to the launderer. Secondary cleaning, by applying a wash water shower to the froth, enhances drainage of gangue particles entrained in the froth, and improves the recovery of the targeted minerals (Finch et al., 2007).While a stable froth is desirable to facilitate drainage of entrained gangue particles, greater amounts of fine particles have been found to contribute to excessively stable froths which could create problems for down-stream processes (Bethell et al., 2012). Operators have tried spraying additional wash water on the froth, and reducing frother dosage to destabilize the froth and to prevent backup at the launderer. The former is sometimes inefficient, and the latter results in unacceptable recovery loss. Currently, the best practice is often the installation of larger froth launderers, adding expensive defoaming agents, and/or using deaeration tanks (Bethell & Luttrell, 2005)."

"The behaviour of minerals in the Mount Wright spiral circuit was investigated to find methods of improving iron oxide mineral liberation and recovery. The feeds, concentrates and tailings from rougher, cleaner and recleaner spirals in one mill line were sampled before and after the sizing screen openings were reduced from 2 mm to 1.6 mm. Sized fractions of each sample were analyzed with the MP-SEM-IPS image analysis system at CANMET to determine mineral quantities and liberation characteristics of the iron oxide minerals. Mass balance techniques were used to calculate stream recoveries of iron, silica, total iron oxide minerals, hema¬tite, goethite, quartz, ferromagnesian silicates, and liberated and locked total iron oxide minerals for each sieve fraction.The reduction of the sizing screen openings increased the ap¬parent liberation of the total iron oxide minerals in the screen undersize from 89% to 94% and raised the over-all iron recovery from 84.4% to 85.3%. Apparent liberation of iron oxide minerals in the cleaner sand also increased from 70% to 85%, but the – 75 µm fraction re¬mained the only fraction containing an acceptable amount of liber¬ated iron oxide minerals in each case. Due to limitations of spiral and grinding efficiency it is recommended that the cleaner sand be screened at 300 m, the +300 m fraction be reground, and the – 300 p.m fraction be rerouted to the rougher spirals.The amount of fine liberated iron oxide minerals (– 106 m) lost in the tailings was 46 TPH in mill line 3. This value represents 41 wt % of the free fine iron oxide minerals, or 7 wt % of the total iron oxide minerals in the spiral feed. Further work is needed to investigate the possibility of recovering this material by other methods.Middling iron particles (010 50%) and presumably free gangue in the size range –300+ 75 m tend to be recovered by spirals by entrapment."

"Rapid dampening suspension is a proposed suspension design for ultra-class haulers that is intended to avoid metal-to-metal contact inside a strut and under shock loading, thus improving ride quality and ameliorating fatigue loading issues on a hauler structure. Laboratory testing has shown the ability of the proposed design to reduce the opportunity for bottoming out, that is, metal-to-metal contact between the colliding ends of oleo-pneumatic, two-piece suspension struts during the compression cycle. This paper predicts the performance of a full-size rapid dampening suspension strut by applying scaling rules to test the proposed design based on a set of field data from a Caterpillar 797B ultra-class haul truck operating in the oil sands region of the province of Alberta, Canada. "The geological composition of strata immediately adjacent to coal seams has a significant effect on the safe and efficient extraction of coal from underground mines of the Sydney coalfield. Geological features such as paleo-sandstone river channels, seam splits, floor rolls, paleo-soils and stone-filled rupture features can rapidly alter the competency of immediate roof and floor strata, significantly reduce the height of the coal seam, cause rapid variations in seam gradient and influence the in situ and run-of-mine quality of the coal.The impact of these features on the over-all mining operation can be significantly reduced if mine management can be for-warned of their impending occurrence. Using the information acquired from boreholes, geological mapping, x-ray diffraction analyses, microscopic studies, geophysical logs and seismic surveys, sedimentary models have been constructed which enable the mine geologist to predict, with increasing accuracy, the future occurrence of deleterious geological features ahead of the working face."

"In December 1991, the GRAHM (Groupe de Recherche sur Jes Applications de L'informatique a L'industrie Minerale), of Laval University started a KBAC (Knowledge Based Automatic Control) grinding project with Falconbridge Ltd. The project was shifted to the Kidd Creek concentrator in the summer of 1992, with the first phase involving the collection of data by GRAHM and Falconbridge personnel for the construction and tuning of a dynamic simulator. This grinding circuit dynamic simulator known as DYNAFRAG was used to assess various control strategies, with a PID-based strategy being selected for ease of installation on a Foxboro II A DCS.The ""B"" primary grinding circuit was chosen for the initial strategy development, which is one of three parallel divisions. The KBAC project was successfully completed in November 1994, with subsequent modifications being implemented by Kidd Creek staff.This paper summarizes, the current control strategy, the project costs, and the realized benefits. Some of the problems which were encountered with the initial installation, and the subsequent modifications are also dealt with in this paper.2.0 IntroductionIn the summer of 1992, the GRAHM of Laval University and Falconbridge Ltd. started a project to design a control strategy for the ""B"" grinding circuit at the Kidd Creek Division. Between 1992 and 1994 several papers have been written to describe the control objectives, the methodology followed, and some initial results (Flament, 1994A, 1994B). Since then, however, the control objectives changed, and several improvements were made to the circuit. In particular, maximizing tonnage was no longer a priority, a variable speed drive pump was installed on the cyclone feed, the ball mill power was lowered, and the geometry of the cyclones changed. As a consequence, the control strategy was revised. Table 1 summarizes the historical developments on the ""B"" division grinding control."

The deep-hole surface blasting technique is a prime method of iron ore mining. Blasting fragmentation is one of the important economic indicators that measures the blast method to obtain the iron ore. To improve the efficiency of the blasting method and further reduce the cost of the subsequent processing of iron ore, this paper summarizes measured data gained from a certain amount of blasting test conducted in an iron ore mine in Guangdong province, China. According to the data analysis, there are differences on iron ore blasting fragmentation by different indicators of deep-hole blasting, such as decoupling coefficient of charge, contact state between charge and borehole wall, and change of detonation position in charge. These factors were compared in terms of relevance and impact. Research shows: under certain rock conditions, the decoupling coefficient of the charge has a best range related to blasting fragmentation. Since the detonation position in charge determines the direction of propagation of the explosion stress wave through ore and rock, bottom initiation and mid initiation will help to improve the iron ore blasting fragmentation in joints fractured rock and ore. The research conclusions have important application value for program design of iron ore surface blasting and to guide other types of rock surface blasting.

(self-desiccation mechanism). A good knowledge of all the drainage and consolidation characteristics of cemented paste backfill is crucial for a better design of underground backfilling sequencing. From many of the existing results and studies done by various authors, as well as the availability of some in-stope backfill pressure data measurements during and after filling, it is possible of developing a procedure of backfilling sequencing. Hence, the objective of this study is to provide a guide for underground backfilling sequencing in the view of preventing the development of excess pore pressure that will affect both the stability of the barricades and the strength development of the backfill. This will be possible by considering the interaction between consolidation/drainage rate, filling rate and binder hydration rate.

"As part of a study to evaluate factors affecting tankroom air quality, the mechanism of aerosol generation from bursting bubbles in electrowinning operations has been investigated. Typically 2 to 3 mg/m2.s are produced in zinc tankrooms. Analysis shows that the rate of production of film drops (geometric mean diameter - 2 urn] increases with decreasing bubble size, and that jet droplets (geometric mean diameter - 20 um) are not produced with gas bubble larger than - 4 mm. Both mechanisms of drop formation and current efficiency are affected by surface active agents, with an over-all reduction in emission of up to 60% to 70% being achievable. A source control system which does not adversely affect electrolyte properties is always preferred, and coalescence of all gas bubbles in to a continuous stream of gas at a single point on the electrolyte surface would eliminate aerosol emissions. This objective was the basis for design of a coalescence device which, in laboratory tests, reduced the emission rate by over 95%.The control device fit s over the electrodes in the electrowinning cell and is partially immersed in the electrolyte. A number of changes in the design which resulted in significant improvement in the performance of the device are reported.Field tests have shown that only about 75% of the aerosol below 10 um can be eliminated by coalescence. The remainder (up to 95% of the total) is controlled by coalescence of droplets, by impaction on the exposed collector surface and gravitational settling.The device does not interfere with operation of the tankroom, handles the effect of surges in power during harvesting, and is simple and inexpensive to maintain. IntroductionDuring the electrowinning of metals (such as zinc and copper) gases are evolved along the electrode surface forming small bubbles. The bubbles travel upwards and burst on the electrolyte free surface generating, in this way, small droplets. Because the electrolyte is often highly acidic or contains toxic materials, the whole process can result in the formation of an aerosol in the atmosphere above the electrowinning cells which poses a serious health hazard to workers in the area, and corrodes equipment."

The extraction and concentration of nickel from aqueous solutions by emulsion liquid membranes (ELMs) using tributylphosphate (TBP) as extractant has been investigated in this research. The emulsion liquid membrane consists of a diluent (kerosene), a surfactant (Span 80), a mobile carrier (TBP), and a stripping solution (ammonia solutions). Important factors influencing the separation process including membrane composition, feed composition, and mixing speed have been examined. The results show that more than 90% of nickel in the feed solution could be extracted by ELMs under the experimental conditions, indicating the feasibility to use the designated ELMs to detoxify nickel-containing industrial waste solutions.

In 1987, John Schloen published a survey and analysis of copper electrorefining tank room data. Following this paper, a series of copper electrorefining surveys have been conducted and presented at each of the Copper-Cobre meetings over the past 20+ years (1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013). For each of these surveys, William Davenport has been key driving force in the collection and analysis of data. To honour Professor Davenport’s contribution to copper processing, a review of the data was conducted. Historic trends and possible future technologies are discussed.
