Reliability is not only important in coal mine planning, production and control. Reliability is also most important, and indeed is fundamental, to successful coal exporting.Coal preparation, blending, distribution, marketing and utilisation are areas of the coal industry in which reliability can be critical to coal exporting. Major elements of reliability which impact on coal exporting include coal quality, supply performance, -coal ownership changes, governmental regulations and policies, market reputations and differences in export markets.

An Ore Reserve Estimate aims to foreqast the impact of the complex mixture of factors which constitute a mining and milling operation. The factors are pulled together in the Mine Plan which then constrains the reserve estimate. At the Zinc Mine at Broken Hill the complexity of the ore lodes highlights some of the factors which affect the ore grade estimates and at Elura the different metallurgical characteristics of the ore types influences their economic viability.

The intention of this paper is to give a review of the present status of lignite mining in the so-called Gulf States in the United States of America, namely Texas, Arkansas, Mis- sissippi and Louisiana. The situation in these states is similar to the situation in Australia in that "Strip Mining - 45 m and Beyond" repre- sents the main technical problem to be over- come in the near future. The solution lies in the application of the bucket wheel excavator.

Selective oxidation of minerals was used in this study to separate by flotation the copper sulphide minerals of chalcocite, covellite and chalcopyrite from the arsenic copper sulphide minerals of enargite and tennantite. It was found that a satisfactory separation of these minerals was only possible after selective oxidation of their surfaces in slightly acidic pH conditions, or after oxidation and selective dissolution of the surface oxidation products with a complexant in basic pH conditions.

Aspects of sampling are becoming more complex, involving a correct statistical approach to collection as well as geological and possibly pedological control. Advanced chemical techniques and techniques of rapid analysis need to be understood. Results may require statistical analysis. The elementary aspects of sampling still need constant attention by those controlling a programme of sampling. No one person will have sufficient knowledge of statistics, geology, pedology and chemistry to be fully conversant with all the aspects of sampling but, by developing a correct approach, problems can be identified and solved.

The Century zinc deposit is located in Queensland approximately 250 kilometres north north-west of the provincial city of Mount Isa, on Lawn Hill Station and within 150 kilometres of the Gulf of Carpentaria.ThefirstMining Lease in this area was pegged in 1887. The Silver King vein is the largestvein deposit in the area and has produced lead and zinc, in addition to 74,000 ounces of silver during its history.A total of forty three veins containing silver, lead and zinc are now known, all of which were discovered by prospectors within 10 years of the first vein being recognized.

Smelting at Mount Morgan started in 1906 with blast furnaces which were replaced by a reverberatory furnace in 1939. The second reverberatory, commissioned in 1944, was replaced by a copper flash smelter in 1972. Flotation concentrates, dried to 0.05 per cent moisture, were oxidised under accurately controlled conditions and produced 45 per cent Cu matte and a slag in the flash smelter. The matte was converted to blister copper and the slag was slowly cooled before grinding and retreatment in a flotation concentrator.

One major aim of the operation of Aberfoyle's matte fuming pilot plant was to assess refractories performance in the process working vessel, a SIROSMELT furnace. High wear rates were expected and whether these could be tolerated was an important question. During operations a range of refractory types was evaluated in both insulated and water cooled furnace designs. Furnace operations enabled lining wear measurements to be made. Results confirm that existing technology can solve any expected refractory problems. Design aspects that should be included in commercial furnaces are shown.

The C.S.A. concentrator of Cobar Mines Proprietary Limited was expanded in 1974 to treat 80 000 tonnes of copper-lead-zinc ore per four week period. Jaw crusher product is fed to two par- allel primary autogenous mills followed by a secondary ball mill. Each mill operates in closed circuit with cyclones. Improved control of grinding rate and product sizing has been obtained from this circuit compared with the system of two parallel single stage autogenous mills. A unique set of circumstances has devel oped in the Mt. Newman Mining Co. Pty. Limited's project in the Pilbara because the mining town of Newman was built almost entirely by the Company whereas residential areas built by the Company at Port Hedland were developed as an adjunct to an existing town. Depending on material commodity market conditions, material contained in open pit waste disposals can hold potential value, Segregating subgrade material into separate disposals i.e. 'sub ore' stockpiles, affords open pit operators the opportunity to modify production strategies to reflect changes in market conditions. Discussion of the concept of subore stockpiling is presented. A two-step mathematical model and a nonlinear programme are employed to answer questions such as, 'how can the value of sub-ore material be determined to distinguish sub-ore from true waste?' and 'when and at what rate should sub-ore be processed?'

Many mining operations developed in the last 15 years have not performed to expectations. Problems experienced include lower than planned development and production rates, geotechnical/stability problems, unplanned dilution, reduced metallurgical performance and unbudgeted capital/operating costs. Most of these problems can be directly attributed to decisions made on the basis of geoscience interpretations and estimates. Recent case studies continue to provide examples of unplanned events linked to the use of geoscience information. These studies illustrate the need to improve the way geological information is used in mine feasibility and operations. Comprehensive assessment of the consequences of inappropriate technical decision making is still rare; however, the information that is reported highlights the significant financial impact on a companyÆs bottom line.

Indonesia remains relatively unexplored by modern methods. The great expectations created by the rush of companies taking up Contracts of Work over large areas during the epithermal gold/ring-of-fire boom (1985-7) have not been fulfilled. This is not necessarily a reflection on the prospectivity of Indonesia; on the contrary, many of the hopeful companies were,, under-staffed and under-financed to overcome the physical and logistic problems of exploring virgin jungle.After the stock market crash of 19th October, 1987, many of the weaker companies were unable to sustain their programs or to arrange farm-outs, and they have subsequently relinquished their tenements. In some cases, little or no field work has been carried out so that many areas remain untested. This poor performance will ensure much more rigorous scrutiny of future applications by the Indonesian authorities.

An electrochemical study of the dissolution of gold in aerated cyanide solution has shown that the dissolution rate is determined b the nature of the surface. A passive film (probably a basic cyanide formed at .o.6 V vs a saturated calomel electrode inhibits both the ca.thodi reduction of oxygen.
