Right in the heart of Boston Harbor lies Deer Island, where a ten-year, 6 billion dollar sewage treatment plant is under construction. The 9.5 mile long, 25.5' diameter Effluent Outfall Tunnel is the center piece of this program. A Robbins double-shielded TBM is currently driving this challenging tunnel some 400 feet below sea level. This paper will discuss the set-up and operation of this Tunnel Boring Machine in driving the longest single heading tunnel ever built in North America.

I appreciate the opportunity to tell you something about Kerr-McGee's Galatia Mine in Southern Illinois. This new underground mine was a departure for us since our previous experience had been gained in large surface mines in Wyoming. Although we were new, we did have the corporate experience in the operation of deep uranium and potash mines in New Mexico and Wyoming, and an earlier underground coal mine in Southeast Oklahoma. In arriving at our final design, we evaluated numerous concepts and finally settled on a two seam mine sharing a single shaft and slope. The mine, in turn, would be supported by a heavy media processing plant designed to optimize the yield from either seam. Further, we wished to be able to keep the two seams separate so that we could sell either seam separately or in a blend. Due to the thickness of the coal, the practical area dedicated to the mine provided forty to fifty years operations at the selected mine capacities. It was important, therefore, that our design and selection of hardware and systems provide for long life and low maintenance in order to compete in today's competitive markets.

In 1970 U. S. Steel acquired the physical assets of mine, mine property, and preparation plant of the Crystal Block Coal Company near Thacker, Mingo County, West Virginia. The facility, identified as U. S. Steel Mine No. 20, is administered and operated as a production unit of U. S. Steel Gary District, Gary, West Virginia. Mining operations of the No. 20 mine are conducted in the high-volatile Alma seam. The preparation plant, which originally had a capacity of about 150 tons per hour (tph) of raw-coal feed, had process circuitry consisting of a Daniels heavy-media vessel for cleaning the plus-1/4-inch raw coal, a McNally-Pittsburg feldspar jig for cleaning the 1/4 inch by 28 mesh, and Daniels flotation cells for treating the 28 mesh by 0. No water-classification system existed. Refuse tailings from the plant were pumped to several surface lagoons which were decanted to the stream. The settled solids were removed and trucked to the coarse-refuse disposal area. Water make-up requirements were supplied by a small mine-water surface reservoir and augmented with stream water. With the absence of proven technology for the mining of these minerals, a ?technological green field? is entered. IHC Merwede (IHC), a global market leader in the dredging and wet mining industry, is on the frontline of these developments. MTI Holland, IHC Merwede?s research and development company, has undertaken a number research efforts focused on the successful development of technology for the mining of deep sea minerals. This paper highlights a number of these efforts and illustrates IHC?s continued dedication for the research and development of technology to enable the commercial mining of deep sea minerals.

J.B. Gwiazda's article deals with an interesting problem that has not been studied thoroughly up to now. Gwiazda has proposed a technical solution that eliminates horizontal load imposed by the supports on the roof. That load is due to a discrepancy between the trajectories of the canopy and the overlying strata. It is true that the improved lemniscate guidance system proposed by Gwiazda could eliminate the horizontal load but, on the other hand, it would represent a higher cost of the supports, and it would complicate the already complicated mechanism of powered supports. That is why we must be convinced that the proposed improvement is actually needed. From that point of view, the following questions should be elucidated. As shown in Fig. 1, the point O travels along the curve a, which produces horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the coal face. As stated by Gwiazda, "such a high load is capable of destroying the roof above the support, causing rock debris to be scattered around the face." The results of our measurements carried out in coal mines of the Czechoslovak part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin show that the convergence in the modern type of powered supports does not exceed several millimeters (not more than 10) per hour. Similar conclusions were drawn from field measurements performed in the Polish part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (see S. Romanowicz and H. Szopka in Proceedings, Scientific and Technical Symposium Simmex '85, Katowice, Poland, pp. 73 -83). The small vertical closure of the supports also induces a small horizontal displacement of the canopy. In addition to this, the transmission of forces between the roof and the canopy is influenced by the layer of debris on it, i.e., the canopy slides without imposing a greater horizontal load on the roof. This was deduced from field measurements of Voest-Alpine F 4/4600 powered supports equipped with rams instead of the common front lemniscate links (denoted as 1 in Fig. 5). In these supports, the pressurizing of the space of piston rod (la in Fig. 5) causes the rams to close, which induces horizontal load on the roof in a direction toward the coal face. After the setting of a support unit, the pressure in the piston rod space was found to drop, frequently to zero, because the small horizontal sliding between the canopy and the debris or inside the debris caused the horizontal reaction from the roof to fall to zero, although the debris were pressurized by vertical setting load. As a consequence, there was no horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof. A rise of the horizontal load was recorded only after the passage of the shearer and during lowering of the adjacent units. Thorough information on the results of the afore- mentioned field measurement is given in the paper, "Analysis of the performance of shield powered supports installed in a thick seam," published in Mechanizacja i automatyzacja gornictwa, 1982, No. 12, pp. 38-46. An English translation of the paper is available from the author. We have deduced from our observations that horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof in the direction toward the coal face is useful for roof control because it limits the displacement of the immediate roof toward the gob particularly during the rise working. We came to the conclusion that horizontal load on the roof toward the coal face should be induced on purpose. Could Mr. Gwiazda prove with the results of field measurements his contrary opinion? Has the small horizontal displacement of the canopy toward the face actually had an adverse effect on the roof? As shown in Fig. 2, during the setting of a support unit, the canopy imposes a horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the gob. In this case, I share Gwiazda's opinion that the horizontal load could have an adverse effect on the roof. Nevertheless, two important circumstances were neglected - the horizontal compliance of the supports and the interaction of adjacent units. The question of the compliance was analyzed precisely by I. Krumnacker in Gluckauf -Forschungshefle, 1984, NO. 5, pp. 219-223. Horizontal stress is an important factor that contributes to roof failure during longwall entry development, especially when the immediate roof is weak. In this paper, the effects of stress angle between the maximum horizontal stress and entry development and stress ratio of the maximum to minimum horizontal stresses on the stress distributions in the weak immediate roof of a three-entry system are analyzed using the finite element method. The results have confirmed that stress angle has a significant influence on the stress distributions. Generally, the three-entry system is in the worst stress condition when the stress angle is about 60° to 75° . The stress ratio has also some effects on the roof stresses.

MOCCA is a Multivariable Optimal Constrained Control Algorithm developed specifically for non-square industrial control applications with practical difficulties such as interactions, time delays, constraints, modelling development, etc. MOCCA consists of an off-line simulation/translation module, for tuning the control parameters, and an on-line module that implements the designed control law. This paper describes an evaluation of MOCCA on the Hemlo grinding circuit which comprises one open circuit ball mill and two closed circuit ball mills in series. In this case a 4x4 unconstrained control problem was considered. The manipulated variables included the fresh ore feed rate and three pump box water additions. The controlled variables were the grinding circuit product particle size and three pump box levels. In this application soft constraints were implemented through control action and control error weighting. The feedforward capability of MOCCA was used to compensate for a measured water flow disturbance to one of the pump boxes. MOCCA performed very well during plant evaluations when compared to the original classical multi-loop control strategy and proved to be quite robust. Perhaps most importantly, the process engineers and plant operators have a high level of comfort both in understanding MOCCA's general operating principles, and with its demonstrated performance.

"Chicago’s Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) is a nearly $4.0 billion and over 30 years long program and arguably the largest and longest combined sewer tunnel and reservoir system in the world. Recently, a massive tunnel construction is underway for connection of the McCook Reservoir to the existing TARP tunnel system. Once completed in two stages in 2017 and 2019, the reservoir will hold 38 billion-liters (10 billion-gallons) of combined sewer overflows (CSO) and flood waters from the city of Chicago and over 20 communities in Cook County, Illinois. McCook Main Tunnel will connect Chicago TARP’s Mainstream Tunnel to the McCook Reservoir. Connecting two 10-meter (33-ft) diameter tunnels at 92 meters (300 feet) underground has not been a simple task for the McCook Tunnel Project participants, the project owner U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), local sponsor Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago, designer Black & Veatch, and the contractor, Kiewit Infrastructure Company (Kiewit). Yet alone excavating and lining massive size tunnels, the team is also challenged with live tunnel conditions in TARP Mainstream Tunnel that carries CSO and flood flows from city of Chicago which runs full during rain events and must remain in service at all times. The project is a noteworthy feat for engineering and construction with the upcoming installation of world’s largest underground wheel gates for flow control within the tunnel. In this paper, we describe one of its kind elements of this major tunnel system along with key design and construction considerations, specifically for the live tunnel connection which is a rare occurrence in the tunneling industry. INTRODUCTION The McCook Main Tunnel system consists of a 10 m (33 ft) finished diameter and 490 m (1,600 ft) long hard rock tunnel constructed from a 27.5 m (90 ft) diameter and 92 m (300 ft) deep main gate and tunnel construction access shaft. The gate shaft houses six high head 4.4 m by 9 m (14.5 ft by 29.5 ft) wheel gates to be installed in the bifurcated and steel lined section of the tunnel. The tunnel also includes portal and energy dissipation structures as it daylights into the reservoir."

The advance of science and technology influences the modern economy in countless ways. Older industries must adapt to changes in the marketplace, while new industries are born by applying new technology to meet consumer needs. In light of declining head grades and increased unit costs in the US minerals industry, new technological developments in the production environment are paramount to maintaining a competitive footing in the international marketplace. Micro-engineering research provides the transition between the knowledge base and the application of new technology on the production level. Economic considerations The primary goal of technical development in the production environment is to reduce unit operating costs. Simply stated, this is accomplished by improving operating efficiencies and productivities on the production level. The goal of micro-engineering research in the production environment is to evaluate promising technologies and develop the criteria necessary to apply them in operations. As such, this process is the first step toward innovation and discovery. Generally, the micro-engineering research is followed by macro-engineering development. In the production environment, there are generally more development projects than can be accomplished in a timely manner. Usually, this is the result of financial and human resource limitations. Consequently, it is necessary to prioritize the work such that the most beneficial projects are accomplished first. By performing a discounted cash flow analysis and using benefit-cost ratios (for non-mutually exclusive alter¬natives) or net present value criteria (for mutually exclusive alternatives), the projects can be rated from best to worst. In this way, the financial and human resources can be best allocated to first complete those projects giving the highest returns before moving on to other activities. Moreover, this information is a prerequisite for management to justify additional financial or human resources.

A computer model has been developed at Consolidation Coal Co.'s Central Engineering Dept. for preliminary economic evaluation of deep coal mine reserves. Since it was first formulated more than two years ago, the model has been used for the following purposes: (1) ranking studies of coal exploration projects, (2) marketing surveys, (3) preliminary sale and acquisition analysis of coal reserves, and (4) parametric analysis in conjunction with detailed feasibility studies.

This paper quantifies the detrimental effects of pyrite and stibnite on gold leaching kinetics. Means to reduce the effect of these minerals by addition of lead nitrate and oxygen are presented. A significant retarding effect was observed when the pyrite concentration was 20%. A pretreatment with lead nitrate reduced the extent of gold surface coating by Ag, Fe and S. Stibnite, at a concentration as low as 20 ppm, significantly affected the gold leaching kinetics through forming a passivating film of Sb(V) oxide possibly Sb2O5. The most practical way to alleviate the effect of stibnite is to leach the materials at a moderate pH with addition of lead nitrate. A low temperature reduced the efficiency of lead nitrate to counteract the effect of stibnite. The increase of dissolved oxygen is not favourable to alleviate the coating of stibnite on gold.

Arch of Illinois is a mining complex comprised of two surface and two underground mines located in Perry County, in southern Illinois. The company a division of Apogee Coal Co. of St. Louis, MO. Arch of Illinois' two surface mines, the Captain and Horse Creek Mines, use large stripping shovels and cross-pit bucketwheel excavators to remove overburden from three seams of coal, the Herrin No. 6, Harrisburg No. 5 and Danville No. 7. All are considered high sulfur reserves. The two underground operations are managed by Arch of Illinois. They are the Kathleen Mine and the newly constructed Conant Mine, which began production in 1991. Both underground mines are continuous miner operations. They mine the No. 6 coal, which is about 1.8 m to 2.1 m (6 to 7 ft) thick. All coal is currently transported by truck to a central preparation plant located at the Captain Mine. This preparation plant produces 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd) of clean coal. Production in 1992 reached 5.9 Mt (6.5 million st) of saleable coal. Of that, about 66% or 4 Mt (4.4 million st) are produced by the surface mines and the rest the by under ground operations. Change is in the wind for Arch of Illinois. In 1988, 100% of all production (6.2 Mt or 6.9 million st) came from surface operations. By 1995, only 38% of production is scheduled from surface mines. And by the year 2000, 100% of production will from underground mining methods. Dwindling low ratio reserves, compounded by increasing environmental and land acquisition costs, coupled with more efficient underground mining equipment, have started an evolutionary trend toward development of underground reserves. For Arch of Illinois to maintain profitability of remaining surface reserves and to compete effectively mining underground, it must improve efficiency, productivity and cost reductions. These efforts are essential for maximizing current surface reserves and to ensure a continued existence in the presence of clean air legislation and the softening of the high sulfur coal market.

The recovery of iron from low-grade (31.6% Fe) Muro iron ore was investigated using reverse anionic flotation of quartz. Tests were performed to investigate the effect of pH, the effects of using distilled vs. tap water as the flotation medium and the effects of using cassava starch vs. dextrin for the depression of iron minerals. The optimum results were obtained around pH 10 and 11, and cassava starch was superior to dextrin in depressing iron oxides. Investigations at pH 11 using cassava starch and distilled water resulted in a concentrate grade of 69.4% Fe with a recovery of 84.4% Fe. Under the same conditions, the use o f dextrin produced a concentrate grade q f 65.9% Fe with a recovery of 78.6% Fe. Investigations at pH 10 using cassava starch and distilled water resulted in a concentrate grade of 60.2% Fe with a recovery of 83.9% Fe, and under these conditions the use of dextrin produced a concentrate grade of 56.1 % Fe with a recovery of 81.5% Fe. Flotation studies conducted at pH 11 using tap water and cassava starch resulted in a concentrate grade of 70.4% Fe with a recovery of 92.7% Fe. This demonstrated the superiority of tap water over distilled water in the reverse anionic flotation process. Investigating the effect of calcium ions on the activation and flotation of quartz with oleic acid revealed that a calcium ion concentration of 50 to 100 ppm was optimum.

In the late1970s, mineral processing plants producing copper sulfide concentrates and oxide leaching feedstocks went online with operating tonnages that exceeded traditional installations. This created a need for larger capacity belt conveyors and apron feeders. Apron feeders are slow moving, heavily loaded conveyors that feed a deep bed of ore from a bulk holding location (a bunker) as a controlled stream, often into a large capacity crusher. Apron feeders use sprockets and caterpillars, while belt feeders use rubber belts with motorized head pulleys to convey the material. The damaging of belts and clogging of transfer points from tramp iron required larger magnetic separators and the removal of tramp metal cannot prevent these serious problems. Corrective action at this location is important for two reasons: Removing tramp iron early in the ore stream protects downstream equipment from potential costly damage. Installing apron feeder magnets before the primary large capacity crusher means that secondary and tertiary crushing steps (made up of multiple parallel units) operate more efficiently, since tramp metal is removed at the onset.

Special attention must be considered in the production of high-grade rare earth products, such as mixed rare earth oxalates or carbonates. In the main minerals used industrially, the rare earth elements (REEs) are finely associated with impurities like calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), thorium (Th), uranium (U) and phosphorus (P). Most of these impurities must be removed to avoid losses of rare earth oxides (REOs) as well as to prevent product quality degradation and low operational performance in the downstream steps of solvent extraction or ion exchange. The present study aims at investigating the conditions required to precipitate REEs, either as rare earth oxalates or carbonates, from purified rare earth sulfuric liquor with low Al3+ and UO22+ concentrations and very high Ca2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, and SO42− impurity contents.

Biological processes for metal solubilization and ore beneficiation are in widespread use today. There are also some promising new applications of biotechnology in the areas of metal concentration and toxic metal cleanup. Recent progress in genetic engineering promises both to revolutionize the existing biological process and to expedite the adoption of the new biological applications. But before it can do so effectively, progress must be made in many areas of fundamental research and in biochemical engineering. These issues are addressed with special reference to the biotechnology of semi-enclosed containers (bioreactors), dumps, heaps, in situ and under- ground leaching, and with respect to the biotechnology of metal concentration. Finally, certain biological considerations for bacterial strain improvement are discussed.

The techniques for fire monitoring of conveyor belts in underground coal mines have been revolutionized by the advent of sensitive carbon monoxide sensors and computer monitoring systems. These new systems are rapidly replacing the previous thermal (fixed-point temperature) sensors that have been shown to be considerably less sensitive for early fire warning. CO is generally an excellent indicator of spontaneous combustion. However, the most recent non-flammable conveyor belt materials have been shown to "burn" with dense smoke, but without sufficiently high temperatures to produce much carbon monoxide. To cover this fire detection void, a smoke detector was developed to augment CO sensing for these new conveyor materials. However, computer monitoring provides the flexibility for handling this and other additional instrumentation as fire monitoring techniques evolve. CO, smoke and temperature sensing may eventually be advocated for complete fire monitoring.

Many questions exist within the geotechnical industry as to the applicability of Strength Reduction Factor (SRF) values to the design acceptance criteria (DAC) of mining operations. There are many factors that contribute to changes in the SRF estimate, some of which are numerical (e.g. dilation angle) and some of which are geometric (e.g. model grid size)[1]. Numerous studies have confirmed equivalent values of SRF and FOS are found for soil slopes of limited height as presented in, [2] and [3]. However, significant deviation of the SRF value was observed for highly cohesive materials (rock slopes) of heights typically encountered in mining, [4]. This paper builds on the work presented in [4], providing a more rigorous examination of the modeling parameters that control the SRF estimate. The failure mechanism assumed for this study was a simple circular shear surface in a uniform material. Both LEM and numerical methods are suited well for analysis of this failure mechanism. A parametric study was completed to evaluate and test the relationships of key numerical variables that affect the estimated value of the SRF using Itasca’s Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLACTM) software. The effect of groundwater has been tested and may be significant but is not presented as part of this body of work for brevity and simplicity of presentation.
