Gold is commonly associated with copper minerals, particu­larly in the more geologically recent rocks of Northern Australia, Chile and the Pacific Rim. Traditionally, oxidised copper-gold ores are selectively mined and processed for gold by cyanidation, ensuring that levels of reactive copper in the ore are kept low to minimise cyanide consumption; whilst sulphide copper-gold ores are floated and gold is ultimately recovered as the by-product from copper smelting and refining (La Brooy, 1992). Very few process­ing options exist for treating copper ores which cannot be selec­tively mined or floated, and for treating floation tailings which often contain significant gold (Muir et.al.,1989). The ammonia-cyanide leach system stands out as a unique method of selectively extracting gold without copper using economic levels of cyanide (1-2 kg/t NaCN) and ammonia (1-5 kg/t). Although first patented in 1904, it proved difficult to control and predict per formance with different ores. However, recent research and development in Western Australia by Ruane (1991), Hayes and Corrans (1992), La Brooy et.al.(1991), Muir et.al.(1993), Muir and La Brooy (1993), has led to an under­standing of the mechanism, and the commercialisation of the process at the Paris Dump (W.A.), Akjoujt (Mauritania), and in the Eastern Transvaal (Laxen,1994). Efforts are now underway to pilot and develop a tailings treatment plant at Telfer following successful laboratory trials. To date, process optimisation has relied on trial and error and large numbers of tests covering a range of conditions. Thus the results are specific to the ore. At Murdoch University, process optimisation is now focused on measuring and control­ ling Eh, pH, NH3 [Cu(II)], and Cu-CN species at the optimum levels identified from the recent mechanistic studies. In this way, the optimum composition required to process any ore should be readily established and maintained.

This paper presents best practice data management for monitoring of extensometers in Australian underground coal mines. This work is based on the combined experience of the authors and the available literature. The information and ideas presented herein are a culmination of many years of database development founded from mine site-based ground support design, underground inspections, extensometer data management and data analysis. Each author has more than ten years’ experience as a practicing geotechnical engineer at several operating industry wide research project focused on utilizing mechanical extensometer data for data analytics and machine learning. Principal hazard ground control management plans, stipulated in Australian coal mining legislation, outline the mandatory installation of ground monitoring devices during routine mining activities. After 20+ years of data gathering the barrier to implementing modern data analytics remains the challenges imposed by inconsistent data structure and data quality. This inconsistency is still routinely found between sites, companies and mining regions. Through the relatively simple application of a standardized database structure, the potential to shift from simplistic tracking of trigger levels, siloed at individual sites, to an industry standard method for compilation & comparison of monitoring data is enabled.

Low world gold prices stimulate development and introduction of economically efficient ( cost saving) technology for operating gold mills. This report covers the results of testing and introduction of CIL technology to recover gold from flotation concentrate of Samarta gold concentration plant located in Buryatia (Russia). This plant is treated the ore of Zun Kholba gold deposit using gravity and flotation of gravity tails as preconcentration processes. Till recently high grade gold gravity concentrate was smelted to gold bullion and shipped to gold refinery, gravity middlings were leached by cyanidation in cone type equipment developed by Irgiredmet and flotation concentrate shipped to copper smelter. The disadvantages of flotation concentrate shipping to copper smelter are following: high concentrate transport cost; problem with gold shipped balance; high cost of flotation concentrate treatment; comparatively low gold recovery. In this connection IRGIREDMET developed the hydrometalurgical technology for gold recovery from flotation concentrate. The flowsheet was developed on the base of laboratory, pilot plant and industrial scale tests conducted by IRGIREDMET in 1987-1997 and lrgiredmet experience on CIP process testing and industrial scale introduction in Yakutia [1-6]. Sewage sludge contains heavy metals, pathogens and bears annoying characteristics that limit its land application. For the sewage to be applicable on land, several stabilization methods can be used. Stabilization with lime (CaO) is used to raise pH and temperature and therefore, according to ASTM standards, reduce pathogen levels and achieve compliance with regulatory requirements. Although the process results in the production of a stabilized material, its direct application to soils is rather limited mainly due to the improper product texture. Inert materials can be further added to sewage sludge stabilized with lime to tackle this problem. The objective of this study is to investigate the potential use of dried bauxite residues as an inert material together with lime for the stabilization of sewage sludge from a municipal water treatment plant. It was indicated that the addition of bauxite residues and lime to sewage sludge apart from meeting the requirements of ASTM standards, it further reduces moisture content, improves material texture and eliminates odors. It was also found that although some elements leachability increased due to the treatment with lime, it further decreased when bauxite residues were also added.

Performance data from phosphate plants are often untrustworthy because of difficulties associated with highly variable feeds and unstable equipment operation. In some cases, this problem is further compounded by improper sampling procedures and unreliable laboratory analyses. Questionable data often lead to misleading conclusions that result in lost productivity and profits. Data reliability may be checked using mass balances, but the mathematics associated with this procedure can be overwhelming when multiple data sets or complex circuits are evaluated. To overcome this problem, a simple spreadsheet-based mass balance program has been developed specifically for plant operators. To use this program, operators simply enter a description of their circuit and input the assay values (e.g., % BPL, % Insol, etc.) for each stream. The program then generates the best estimates of the assay values and flags values that may be unreliable. The spreadsheet is specifically designed to be easy to use and requires no knowledge of statistics or programming. This manuscript reviews the mass balance problem and describes how spreadsheet programs can be used to evaluate plant data. An example problem involving the analysis of data around a two-stage phosphate flotation circuit is presented.

In 1973 housing and construction conflicts threatened Front Range gravel resources. The legislature addressed the problem by passing HB 1529, which required the Colorado Geological Survey to map the deposits and forbid local governments to change lands over commercial mineral deposits from zones allowing mineral development to zoning which conflicted with development. It charged counties to develop Master Plans for Extraction. Plans must consider resource quality, multiple-sequential-use potential, surrounding area compatibility, neighbors, quality of Life, extraction maximization and reclamation potential. Imprecisely worded statutes, budgetary constraints, lack of enforcement and political pressures have limited benefits from the law.

INTRODUCTION Selective Reduction of Nickel in Oxidized Ores Oxidized nickel ores, either garnieritic or lateritic, contain much more iron than nickel. The regular carbon reduction in an electric furnace is operated in such a manner that the greater part of iron oxides is reduced simultaneously with nickel oxide, resulting in a low nickel content ferronickel. In order that the nickel content of residual slag may be suitably low, -excess carbon must be fed so that the carbon content of the ferronickel thus obtained is that of casting iron. The metal also contains other impurities such as silicon, chrome, etc. In order to convert the casting iron into slightly carburized ferronickel with high nickel content, the greater part of the carbon and more than half the iron contained therein must be oxidized by means of oxygen. Energy is thus consumed as carbon, and power to reduce iron oxides, and more energy is consumed as oxygen to re-oxidize the iron contained. This method can be economically adopted for nickel ores with grades ranging around 2. 5 to 370, but it gets excessively costly when nickel grade falls below these values. This is why, for nickel ores with low nickel grades and high iron content, studies were conducted to develop a selective reduction process which, while reducing only a small part of the iron oxide, would provide efficient reduction of nickel oxide. Large (> 100,000 oz.) sediment hosted disseminated gold (SHDG) deposits are often spatially associated with anticlines. Many SHDG deposits are within or closely associated with windows. Windows are erosional manifestations of fold culminations (4-way closed anticlines). Hydrocarbons are often trapped in fold culminations in the Canadian Rockies, and may account for degraded hydrocarbons in many SHDG deposits. In the Eastern Basin and Range Province, Mesozoic anticlines may have been large scale conduits fm gold bearing Mesozoic and Cenozoic hydrothermal fluids which became trapped and/or concentrated at the fold culminations.

Limestone resources for industrial, constructional, and agricultural uses occur on the surface and at minable depths in several areas along the Ohio River and its navigable tributaries in Kentucky. Operable thicknesses of high-calcium and high-carbonate limestones suitable for use in cement and lime production, steel manufacture, environmental-control measures, and other special uses are documented in Ordovician and Mississippian formations by analysis of 0.3-meter (foot-by-foot) samples. Active and potential mine and quarry sites afford access to water transportation and proximity to a number of industrial and metropolitan centers. Geologic factors affecting the distribution of deposits include the Cincinnati arch, regional dip into the Appalachian and Eastern Interior basins, complex faulting in and near the Western Kentucky fluorspar mining district, and late Paleozoic erosional unconformities in northeastern Kentucky.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California established a Board of Consultants to assist them in administering the design and construction of the Inland Feeder Program tunnels. The Board acts as an expert review body for the owner, looking at key issues that can potentially impact the success of the program. The use of the Board evolved over the life of the project, and its composition was modified to better address the needs of the owner, and the Program requirements. The experience, function, and value of such a board is analyzed and discussed in this paper.

Sediment consolidation in highly flocculated suspensions occurs only if the self-weight of the material exceeds its compressive yield stress. A simple model for sediment densification is presented and applied to the simulation of thickener operations. Measured relationships between sediment self-weight and the extent of consolidation are used to establish underflow densities. Supernatant turbidity data provide the information necessary to predict overflow clarity. It is shown that thickener depth can play a role in determining solids-handling capacity as well as dewatering performance. The application of the model to the design and operation of full-scale thickeners is described.

Introduction The Bailey mining complex is located in Greene County, PA, in the Talley Run valley. It includes two Pittsburgh No. 8 seam deep mines (Bailey and Bailey No. 2), a coal preparation plant, and two refuse areas. Clean coal is shipped from the complex by way of a 24-km (15-mile) rail spur. It con¬nects to the Monongahela Railroad in Waynesburg, PA. In early 1981, Consolidation Coal Co. (Consol) began a permitting effort aimed at building the mine. Construction began in Dec. 1981, less than six months after the first application submittal. Clean coal was produced by the Bailey preparation plant in Sept. 1984. Several factors allowed quick permitting at Bailey. Effective project planning, including early formulation of a project planning team, and identification of red flag issues helped. So did innovative responses to environmental questions, and development of environmentally sound project designs. Forming a project planning team Consol management decided that Bailey mine construction had to begin in late 1981. A project permitting team was immediately formed to see that this goal was achieved. Team members included a project manager and personnel from Consol's engineering, environmental, and operating departments. Communications among all team members was crucial in obtaining the various state and Federal environmental permits. All project permitting team members participated in weekly meetings during application preparation. Discussions at these meetings ranged from recent public contacts, to application content, to environmental design considerations. Establishing a project manager was critical to the team's success. The project manager was responsible for seeing that permit acquisition, facility construction, and operation of the mining complex proceeded on schedule. The project manager had the final word, mediated disagreements, and frequently served as project spokesman to the public. Identifying red flag issues Red flag issues are those environmental factors with the most potential for delaying the schedule or stopping the project. The first red flag issue identified was organized local opposition. Since start-up in 1985, the Cannon Mine has produced and shipped a 170-g/ton (5 oz/ton) gold flotation concentrate to various smelters for gold and silver recovery. Several processes have been investigated to economically produce dore' at the mine site from the refractory concentrate. This paper describes laboratory and pilot scale test work used in the process design and engineering feasibility study of a 73-t/d (80 stpd) pressure oxidation and carbon-in-leach (CIL) facility. The designed pressure oxidation circuit utilizes a series of vertical autoclave units operating at 170°C (338°F) and 1.4 MPa (200 psig). Projected operating costs are discussed.

A 2.5 meter diameter column has been successfully used in a 100 tph flotation plant at the Harbour Lights Mine in Leonora, Western Australia, to produce a final gold bearing sulfide concentrate from the ore in a single stage. This pioneering application of column flotation cells to rougher stage was pilot tested using a 11 cm column, which demonstrated column's capability in rougher, scavenger and cleaner flotation stages. A hybrid circuit involving columns and mechanically agitated flotation cell s was adopted for the commercial installation. This paper describes pilot plant results, design of the plant flotation circuit, and early results of commercial operation.

The principles of quality management are well developed and, from a practical stand- point, thoroughly implemented in the process industries of Japan. Although these principles are now applied to the U.S. manufacturing industry, and as a result, the steel industry, they have been largely ignored in the non-ferrous and precious metals industries. This paper presents the concepts and practical approaches to implement a total quality management program. Contrary to the beliefs of many managers, such a program increases yields, recoveries and output while it decreases unit costs. In fact, quality management incorporating statistical process control will be an essential ingredient for metallurgical plants to effectively compete in the '90's.

Management Information System (MIS), is a system using formalised procedures to provide management with appropriate information to make timely and effective decisions. Before developing MIS, first functions of the organisation should be defined and grouped into subsystems. After determining the information required and produced by each system and interaction between subsystems, the related data resources should be structured into a series of databases and files. In this study, the MIS developed for Soma Open Pit Mines, Turkey is described in this respect. First, analyses of the existing system including user requirements and scope of the system are given. Then the designed information system, its subsystems, interaction between subsystems and system structure are presented in detail.

Introduction Coal preparation plants are continuously losing clean coal in their refuse and contaminating their clean coal product with impurities. This is due to the lack of a system by which the immediate efficiency of the cleaning operation can be determined at any given time. Moreover, the advantage of developing tagging/ tracing techniques would be a reduction in the time and money spent in evaluating the performance of advanced cleaning techniques. Currently, conventional sampling and testing, on-line analyses, and computer information systems are the major tools with which engineers analyze and control the efficiency of processing plants. Conventional sampling and testing is an effective analysis technique but it is slow. On-line analysis provides information on quality parameters rapidly, but these parameters do not provide all of the necessary information. The use of tagged particles in coal preparation plants may provide the necessary link between diagnosis and the application of computers to process control. In this work, a novel technique that uses tagged particles to generate partition data is presented (Leonard et al., 1982). Individually prepared tagged particles are added to the feed and detected in the product or refuse port of specific gravity based processes. Providing that a computer can interpret the output of a detection device and trace particles with predetermined physical properties through the coal preparation plant and that the trace particles actually represent desired raw material, sufficient partition data can be provided for computer analyses and control of processing efficiency. Coal tagging technique The use of tagged particles in coal preparation operations are in the early stages of development. Though there is a brief history of particle tracing in the mineral processing industry (Gardner et al., 1986; Foreman and Amundson, 1976; Poston et al., 1962), the concept has not yet been applied to the analysis and control of processing plant operations. Several methods for tagging coal particles have been identified. These include magnetic, radioactive, and fluorescent techniques. As far as the magnetic tagging of coal particles is concerned, a method has been developed to manufacture synthetic magnetic particles of various sizes and specific gravities. Ideally the synthetic particles would have identical size and density as the coal particles being separated.

A variety of dynamic failure cases with regional impact were described at a bump symposium held in 1958. These types of events, while rare, are of particular interest because their ability to impact a large area has disaster potential. These cases can be grouped into two broad classes of events by mechanism. These are (1) a slip along steeply dipping faults and (2) the fracturing of strong strata above or below the coal seam. Both failure modes produce dynamic or “shock” loads on the perimeter (roof, rib and floor) of mine openings. Special consideration should be given to these failure modes in the planning of deep coal mines, since their occurrence is not within the professional experience of many contemporary workers. In addition, their potential is not evaluated by many of the analysis tools commonly used to evaluate hazards in coal mine plans.
