Rio Tinto’s Colowyo Coal Mine produces 2.1 million tons per year in northwest Colorado. Colowyo uses the terrace mining method to recover up to seven coal seams ranging in thickness from 5 to 20 feet. Coal recovery in the 6 foot thick high grade C-seam has recently been challenged due to large variations in the pitch and roll of the seam. As well, some coal damage was seen due to an increased thickness of the overburden consisting of a hard sandstone channel.

The problem of the maximum depth at which a mine buried in the surf zone or beach zone is a threat to landing vehicles is being studied by Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Indian Head Division, Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), and The University of Maryland Dynamic Effects Laboratory. The problem was divided into two parts: The first part involves determining how deep a pressure plate mine can be and still detect a vehicle passing over it. This requires determining the distribution of stress within dry and saturated sand when a vehicle passes over a buried mine. The results obtained from that study are presented in a related paper (1). This paper will cover the second part, which entails determining the impulse delivered to the vehicle. This is equivalent to determining the impulse delivered to a plate suspended above the detonating explosive charge and includes an investigation of the distribution of the impulse over the plate. The purpose of the research is to develop a scaling law and/or computational capability which will permit predicting impulse to be expected in the field from tests conducted in the lab. The computational effort is aimed at the development of and confidence in computer codes that can be used to predict stresses and strains in plates due to the detonation of buried mines.

The King George V (KGV) Shaft forms part of MTR Corporation Limited (MTRCL) Works Contract 703 extension of the underground West Island Line on Hong Kong Island. The Shaft and the associated adit was the sole access to excavate the running tunnels. Originally during the Detailed Design stage, it was concluded that blasting was not feasible at the KGV Shaft due to the close proximity of sensitive receivers in the form of residential buildings, electrical cables and hospitals. As a result, the Contractor planned to excavate the Shaft using mechanical means with a programme time of seven months. The Contractor appointed a Sub-contractor to analyse the feasibility of excavating the Shaft by blasting. The Sub-contractor reviewed the proposal and recommended the use of an innovative blasting technique that had never been previously employed in Hong Kong. The Sub-contractor recommended the Shaft be blasted using DetNet electronic delay detonator technology, manufactured by AEL Mining Services in South Africa, with an initial 1.5m depth of water ballast covering the blast face. The electronic delay detonators provided initiation accuracy to ensure there would be no overlap between sequentially detonating blastholes. The water ballast makes use of the effect of energy lost through the shock front causing the water to break up into droplets creating a spray dome resulting in the attenuation of the energy imparted into the surrounding rock mass. Various tests have demonstrated that both the maximum overpressure and impulse density are significantly reduced when water of a minimum depth is in direct contact with detonating explosives. This innovative blasting technique reduced the excavation programme by three months, saved HK$5 million in direct costs and totally mitigated the impacts on the public and other stakeholders nearby the KGV Shaft. Peak Particle Velocities (vibrations) rarely exceeded 2-3mm/sec (0.08-0.12in/sec) at a distance of 30-40m (98-131ft) from the blast location and air overpressure levels were reduced below the Hong Kong target level of 120dBL. In total, 24 blasts were fired with an average advance of 1.6m (5.25ft) with an average powder factor of 2.03kg/m3 (0.127lb/ft3) to 1.84 kg/m3 (0.114lb/ft3). The initiation pattern had 5ms between sequentially detonating blastholes and 20ms between adjoining rings.

Well stimulation is the process by which any production well, whether for production (extraction), storage (injection) or deep interaction (remediation, monitoring, etc) can be made or stimulated to flow at higher levels. This stimulation is driven by active methods to increase the permeability in the near-well environment and create a larger zone of communication between a well and the reservoir it services. Well stimulation is a crucial aspect of well completion and reservoir engineering and is a subject of careful pre-drilling planning. In many modern industrial endeavors the effectiveness of well stimulation is often critical to economic viability. Because of the broad impact of well engineering on several large industries (petroleum and natural gas extraction and storage, geothermal power, groundwater monitoring, extraction and management, environmental remediation, mining and minerals extraction, etc.) changes in the state of the art in well engineering and well stimulation can affect the capabilities of very diverse and disparate industries. This paper is an effort to communicate the status and effectiveness of current practice and technology in well stimulation. The intention being that effective communication of progress can spur innovation in industries that require well stimulation but are removed from immediate communication of technological or practical improvement.

The traditional concept of scaled-distance modelling for predicting blast induced ground vibration holds many drawbacks, not least of which is the major effect data scatter imparts on confidence determination. An investigation by the Department of Mining and Mineral Engineering, The University of Leeds, England has resulted in the development of simple but effective method of improving prediction capacity through the reduction of effective error by incorporating individual location response into a scaled-distance model. The work is the product of an l&month blast-monitoring campaign at a limestone quarry situated in North Yorkshire, England. The data, when presented in the form of a scaled-distance model, indicates a typical scenario where a good overall correlation becomes marred by the extent of data scatter. Examination of the individual monitoring locations however indicates that the response of the individual location is an important factor in the explanation of the large residuals. The novel approach thathas been developed incorporates a series of locational site factors which when incorporated into a scaled distance model reduces the effective error and therefore improves prediction capacity. The approach is based on using a standard computer package “spread sheet” on the understanding that these are commonly available on all quarry or home computers. This approach has been validated by comparison with a more rigorous statistics method.

The Bureau of Mines arranged to have a wood-frame test house built in the pat of an advancing surface coal nine so it could investigate the effects of repeated blasting on a residential house. Structural fatigue and damage were assessed over a 2-yr period. The house was subjected to vibrations from 587 production blasts with particle velocities that varied from 0.10 to 6.94 in/s. Later, the entire house was mechanically shaken to produce fatigue cracking. Failure strain characteristics of construction materials were evaluated as a basis for comparing strains induced by blasting and shaker loading to those induced by weather and household activities. Cosmetic or hairline cracks 0.01 to 0.10 mm wide occurred during construction of the house and also during periods when no blasts were detonated. The formation of cosmetic cracks increased from 0.3 to 1.0 cracks per week when ground motions exceeded 1.0 in/s. Human activity and changes in temperature and humidity caused strains in walls that were equivalent to those produced by ground motions up to 1.2 in/s. When the entire structure was mechanically shaken, the first wallboard tape joint crack appeared after 56,000 cycles, the equivalent of 28 yr of shaking by blast-generated ground motions of 0.5 in/s twice a day.

he Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) supplies water to some 16 million people in a semi-arid region. Most of this water is imported. Some of the supply lines cross over the San Andreas fault, one of the most notorious and active faults in the U.S. There was a serious need for emergency water in case normal supplies should be interrupted. To fill that need, MWD had to find a reservoir site on the west side of the San Andreas fault, west of the mountains. Because of the distinctive nature of the location, it was necessary to construct a huge “bath tub” by building a dam at each end of a valley, requiring some 115 million cubic yards (88 million cu.m) of fill. In effect, two large-scale surface mining operations have been under way simultaneously. The $2.2 billion project is known as the Eastside Reservoir Project. Because of space limitations, this paper will be limited to those topics which are expected to be of primary interest to explosives engineers, principally related to large-scale rock fill production. There is not sufficient space to discuss the many diverse geotechnical questions related to site selection, geological and geophysical field testing, laboratory testing and design considerations. This brief overview may assist those who might be interested in making a tour of the project site following the ISEE conference.

Blasting is a commonly utilized method in civil engineering projects and mining operations. Ammonium nitrate-based (AN-based) explosives are the most efficient explosives today in terms of handling and performance. However, a side effect is the production of gases. The reduction of these gases plays an important role in the safety and environmental aspects in the working place. Therefore, optimizing the recipes of explosives is vital for minimizing the environmental impact and increasing performance. The aim of the project is to provide results and recommendations on the use of emulsion commercial explosives to support the Swedish mining industry and tunnel-contractors as well as the explosives manufactures. The approach was to test various recipes of civil emulsion explosives to investigate the generation of toxic fumes (CO, CO2, NO, NO2 and NOx) during their detonation. To further increase the knowledge of the influence of different additives, ammonium nitrate prills were added in various percentages. The experimental configuration consisted of magnetite mortar cylindrical specimens with a 50 mm borehole at their center, filled with emulsion explosive. Several tests with different emulsion compositions regarding ammonium nitrate additives (10%, 20%, 25%, 30% and 35%) were carried out in a blasting chamber. The measurement equipment was composed of a flue gas analyzer. The instrument was meticulously cleaned after every test, as well as before and during the tests due to condensation (high humidity and dust) at the inlet of the instrument. The emulsion was manually sensitized with microballons and pumped into the cylinders to ensure lack of bubbles, which could introduce inhomogeneities. The acquired gas concentration data was complemented with temperature, humidity, and VoD measurements. The results showed a linear increase of nitrogen gases as the percentage of ammonium nitrate prills increased. On the other hand, carbon gases had a relatively low coefficient of determination. The VoD data showed a behavior that can be described with a simple quadratic equation.

Pentolite is a class of high explosives containing trinitrotoluene (TNT) and pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) with PETN content typically ranging from 40 to 60 wt%. Manufacture involves melting TNT, 80 °C, followed by addition of PETN and trace ingredients to form a homogeneous mixture. Once a mix is ready to be poured, several factors can influence the behavior of the finished product including how long the mix has been at temperature and cooling rate. After the manufacturing process has been completed, storage conditions combined with manufacturing conditions may cause physical changes. Two such changes explored were exudation, liquid exuding from solid boosters, and ratchet growth, irreversible volumetric expansion. Exudation is principally caused by excess water in the process. Ratchet growth is a common phenomenon of nitroaromatic compounds such as TNT where time and temperature fluctuations can cause materials to increase volume, simultaneously decreasing density. Although neither phenomenon affects common attributes such as sensitivity, performance, and shelf-life, both can cause issues in storage and handling. In this study pentolite was cast into various forms under different manufacturing conditions and evaluated over several months of controlled storage conditions including ambient, temperature cycling and elevated isothermal. Subjective and objective measurements were made throughout the evaluation period with the aim to determine the preferred storage methodology.

In 2008 a paper from the same source describing four actual cases of exposure of electronic detonators to lightning strikes was presented. It was shown that electronic detonators, like other initiation systems, are vulnerable to very close or direct lightning strikes. At the time of submitting this abstract no further incidents with lightning have been experienced. As a result of those original incidents, and in order to understand how the safety devices inside electronic detonators break down, two series of tests have been done, each with 2 detonator designs. In the first series detonators were subjected to capacitor discharges up to 6kV and 1kJ in energy. In the second series the intensity was increased to 800kV and 24kJ in energy. In the second series, more electrical energy was delivered to the detonator assembly than the explosive energy of the detonator. In both series both detonators showed a spectacular ability to resist very high discharge energies. The tests are described in detail with supporting photographs. The data for both pin-to-pin and pin-to-case (more relevant to lightning) are presented and discussed. The mechanism of breakdown of safety devices is now understood better and the learning is being used to design more robust products. In use, blasting powder is exploded by a spark from fuse, electric squib or miner’s squib, or by a primer of some high explosive, the last being employed only in heavy charges on open work. In mining, and sometimes in light charges on open work, blasting powder is made into cartridges by means of a paper tube or cylinder sealed at one end, which is known as the Du Pont tamping bag. Sometimes the paper cylinder is made by the miner by coiling a section of heavy paper, known as blasting paper, around a wooden pin, called a cartridge pin, and securing it with what is called blasting soap. The removal of the pin leaves a cylindrical cartridge open at one end, into which the powder is poured and the top folded and sealed with blasting soap.

[Executive Director’s note: According to 17th edition of the ISEE Blasters Handbook in its section on trench blasting, “...consideration must be given to the proper venting of gases generated from the blasting. Should those gases spread laterally rather than vent directly to the surface, the gases may travel underground and finally vent well outside of the planned area. Such events may be caused by the strata, soil conditions or root systems, or existing and/or abandoned utilities or other man-made structures. In the worst situation, gases resulting from the detonation such as CO2, CO, and/or NOx may travel through the strata and find their way into basements of nearby homes or businesses. The IME has recommendations on how to minimize this potential problem. Some of the points include removing the overburden and digging the rock immediately after the shot, and drilling vent holes periodically between the ditch and adjacent homes.” The Board of Directors of the International Society of Explosives Engineers has expressed its concern that blasters be made aware of the issue of migration of carbon monoxide resulting from blasting operations. To most people, this is a common (maybe the most common) topic of casual conversation. To a meteorologist that just dealt with six thunderstorm delays at a major golf event over 4 days, well, lets just say the smirk on my face said it all. After giving my flight mate a detailed forecast and a short explanation on why I would know such information, I sensed, correctly, the inevitable follow up question was coming. “Why would you need a meteorologist at a golf tournament?”

Blasting conducted in surface coal mining operations in the Appalachian region consumes a significant amount of blasting agents. Emission of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from these operations potentially represents an environmental challenge. This paper presents work conducted to quantify NOx output from the detonation of blasting agents common to surface blasting operations in surface coal mines. Annual ANFO and emulsion consumption data was collected from an operational surface coal mine located in West Virginia. It is known that many factors contribute to the types of gaseous byproducts released from the detonation of explosives. These factors include but are not limited to: fuel to oxygenator ratio, degree of confinement, and contamination. While, past research has been conducted to study the relationships these factors play on the release of NOx, these findings do not agree with one another. The annual explosive consumption values from the West Virginian mine were applied to NOx emission conversion factors in published literature. This lead to a range of NOx emissions from 95 to 914 tons in a year. Given the wide range of NOx production the utility of this information is suspect. The EPA recognizes a standard factor of 17 lbs (NOx)/ton (ANFO) however this factor is based on chemical composition and does not address contamination, confinement, or AN to FO ratio. This factor when applied to the West Virginia Mine's explosive consumption produced a value of 215 tons of NOx. There is a lack of information on NOx emission from emulsion type explosives. The work presented in this paper can be used by blasting professionals to quantify NOx emissions and guide future work for producing better predictor factors.
