THE Pyrometer Committee was. formed Sept. 20, 1918, at the suggestion of Dr. H. M. Howe, Chairman of the Engineering Division of the Research Council, for the purpose of developing a pyrometric method suitable for open-hearth steel practice so that the effects of temperature in the various stages of the processes of steel making might be correlated quantitatively with the other factors influencing the production of sound .steel. Silicon thin films were deposited by electron beam evaporation in an ultrahigh vacuum onto (0001) and (1102) sapphire substrates. Attempts were made to correlate the structural properties of the deposited silicon films with the following: 1) substrate orientation, 2) substrate surface condition, 3) substrate temperature, and 4) deposition rate. The substrate temperatures were varied between 500° and 1000°C and the deposition rates were varied between approximately 50 and 700A per min. The following sapphire surface treatments were investigated: 1) annealing in the ultrahigh vacuum at 1200° C; 2) heating in a hydrogen atmosphere at about 1350°C; and 3) etching with silicon by evaporating silicon onto sapphire substrates heated to 1200° or 1300°C. Twinned silicon films were occasionally formed at substrate temperatures between the 800° and 1000°C on unprocessed mechanically polished substrates; however, the reproducibility and crystallinity of these films were generally poor. Single-crystal and twinned silicon films were formed at substrate temperatures between 700° and 1000°C on substrates which were silicon-etched at 1300°C prior to deposition. Fiber texture films were formed at substrate temperatures between 500° and 700°C. The (111) lattice plane of the silicon single-crystal films was parallel to the (0001) sapphire plane and the (100) silicon plane was parallel to the (1102) sapphire plane. TECHNIQUES are well-established for growing single-crystal silicon thin films on sapphire by chemical methods.'-* Vacuum epitaxial techniques have a number of advantages over chemical epitaxial techniques in the fabrication of thin film microcircuits.5 One of the most significant is that vacuum techniques are compatible with well-established procedures for forming vacuum-deposited thin-film resistors, capacitors, and interconnections. Salatna, Tucker, and young6 recently reported the formation of relatively poor crystalline-quality silicon films on sapphire by electron beam evaporation in a vacuum of about 7 x 10-7 Torr. The purpose of the investigation described here is to determine the relationships between the structural properties of silicon thin films deposited on sapphire substrates by electron beam evaporation in an ultra-high vacuum and the following: 1) substrate orientation; 2) substrate surface condition; 3) substrate temperature; and 4) deposition rate. The substrate temperatures were varied between 500° and 1000° C and the deposition rates were varied between approximately 50 and 700A per min. Two orientations of sapphire were used: (0001) and (1102). The thick-nesses of the films were between 8000 and 16,000A. The morphology and crystallinity of the deposited films and substrate surfaces were investigated by optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and electron diffraction. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE A cross section of the ultrahigh-vacuum thin-film evaporator is shown in Fig. 1. The bell jar is stainless steel and copper gaskets are utilized at all seals. High vacuum is attained by a 6001iter per sec ion pump and a titanium sublimation pump. Sorption pumps are used to rough the system to a pressure of about 10 µ prior to starting the ion pump. Vacuums in the 10- 10 Torr range were attained after baking the system at about 250°C for 8 hr. Vacuums in the 10-8 to 10-9 Torr range were maintained during silicon evaporation. The silicon charges, which were cut from p-type single-crystal boules which had resistivities between 2000 and 4500 ohm-cm, were placed in the water-cooled copper crucible of a 180 deg bent-beam 5-kw electron beam evaporator. During evaporation, a molten zone was formed in the top center of the silicon charge, and the portion of the silicon charge in contact with the water-cooled crucible remained solid. Industrial Minerals, often called the Cinderella Minerals or the Building Blocks of industry continued their growth patterns through 1973, although profits were slightly lower due to the cost-price squeeze. Most of the individual reports which follow indicate growth rates of 3-15%. Surprisingly such commodities as sulfur held firm in spite of the over supply in the Canadian gas fields; cement was in short supply while the asbestos industry reported a worldwide shortage of group 4 and 5 fibers. Talc and perlite production set new records. In synopsis, 1973 was a productive year for industrial minerals. However 1974 onward appears to be one of contradiction. The unsettled conditions of world economics, the energy shortage, compounded by the Arabs oil embargo have created great problems for all industries. The high energy consuming segments of the Industrial Minerals field will be under intense pressures. On the other hand limestone, lime and perhaps trona, nahcolite might be consumed in ever increasing tonnages in SO2 removal systems connected with smelters and coal-fired power stations. The effects of the proposed changes in the staking, claiming and exploitation of federal lands by the BLM may also have serious repercussions not only to the industrial minerals field but to the entire mining industry. 1974-1975 will certainly be ear-marked as a year of frustrations and difficult decisions.

(written discussion).-There is no reason to doubt that the relationship between the rate of flow and the impelling force of all fluids can be expressed by a general typical equation . that takes cognizance of all relevant factors such as density, viscosity (or its reciprocal mobility) and nature of channel-walls. Most fluids that are commonly conveyed by flow in confined channels are so highly mobile that they may be considered non-viscous, hence for these fluids the factor of viscosity does not need to appear in the equation. Water is the outstanding example of this class of fluids and its dynamic behavior has been so thoroughly investigated that proven formulas pertaining thereto, be they rational or empirical, would naturally serve as prototypes for the other non-viscous fluids. As non-viscous fluids can be classed all gases and vapors, most unsaturated aqueous solutions, gasoline, alcohol, etc. Viscous fluids comprise those that have a sluggish flow such as most. oils, tar, molasses, etc., the high viscosity of which is due to shearing resistance between molecules; a force that must be taken into account in figuring the flow of fluids of this class.

The oxidation kinetics of single-crystal silicon has been investigated using extremely dry oxygen as the oxidant. Two techniques were used. The first involved a flow system with which incremental thickness measurements were made. This sytem provided an oxygen ambient at atmospheric pressure which had a moisture content of less than 0.1 ppm of water. The second technique involved measuring the change in volume of oxygen with time in a closed system. A temperature range of 900O to 1200 "C and a pressure range of 20 to 760 Tory were covered. Both techniques showed that a simple parabolic rate law holds only at the higher temperatures. At lower temperatures, the data up to 5000Å can be fitted well to a linear-parabolic equation. The two constants in this rate equation are examined in terms of a physical model. The parabolic portion of the low-temperature oxidatLon fits along the high-temperature curve of an Arrhenius plot. The parabolic rate constant for the flow-system technique can be expressed by k = 2 x 10-9 exp (L 31 kcalRT) sq cm per sec. The manostatic technique gave k = 1 x 10-exp (- 23 kcalRT) sq cm per sec. By extending the thickness range to over 104. a rate law of X = At seems to fit all of the data better than the linear-Pavabolic law. Here the exponent n increases from 0.518 at 1150 V to 0.637 at 900°C. PASSIVATION of silicon planar devices through thermal oxidation is of such great importance that considerable effort has been devoted to the study of the process.17 Much of this work involves hydrothermal oxidation, in which H2O is the oxidant: whereby H2 is produced. It has been proposed that the reaction proceeds by the formation of Si-OH groups and hydroxyl diffusion through the film to react with the silicon surface. Thus, the silicon oxide layer probably contains residual hydrogen in some form after oxidation in H2O and it has already been established that hydrogen has a marked effect on the electronic properties of oxide-passivated silicon surfaces. Silicon is oxidized by oxygen at elevated temperatures; but the rate of oxide formation is considerably lower than that for 0." By using dry O2 as the sole oxidant, the presence of residual hydrogen is presumably avoided. At present, the mechanism of thermal oxidation by dry O2 is a matter for conjecture, and the presence of small amounts of H2O was reported to have a marked effect on the rate of oxide formation10 (perhaps on the electronic properties of the surface, as well). Hence, this study of the kinetics of silicon oxide growth in 0, was undertaken: 1) to determine the oxidation rate at atmospheric pressure in a system designed to exclude rigorously all traces of H2O in the ambient 0,; 2) to obtain oxidation-rate data in situ in dry O2 by means of a continuous monitoring of the amount of 0, consumed during oxide growth. These objectives are complementary—the first assesses what effects (if any) are obtained by excluding H2O from the reaction, and the second expands this information while at the same time avoiding the uncertainty inherent in relying upon incremental measurements of oxide growth to furnish kinetic data. In 1978, Anschutz Mining Corp. began efforts to develop the Madison Cobalt Project in southeast Missouri. Preliminary metallurgical studies indicated that intermediate grade cobalt products, suitable for shipment to existing refineries, could be recovered from the sulfide mineralization of the ore body. However, tolling and freight charges were significant, as the refineries were located outside the US. These refineries would not satisfy the goal of strategically insulated production of superalloy-grade cobalt. The acquisition of proven, readily available refinery technologies was then evaluated. However, licensing costs were substantial and the "proven" technologies were not directly applicable to the unique chemistry of Madison materials. Faced with these challenges, Anschutz, in conjunction with the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute, embarked on an effort to develop a sulfate-based separation and refining process. CSMRI performed bench-scale and continuous pilot experiments on solutions generated through other pilot campaigns conducted by Lurgi, Hazen Research, and Sherritt Gordon. The results indicated that cobalt could be selectively extracted from sulfate media using a new generation of organophosphates. The solvent extraction system produced a solution suitable for electrolysis of high-purity cobalt. Preliminary cost studies indicated the novel process was competitive with other refinery systems. Plans to develop the detailed engineering-design information required to commercialize the process were abandoned when the price of cobalt collapsed to less than $17.64/kg ($8.00 per lb).

During the past two years California has developed a new and important oil-field: I refer to Midway. This field produced the famous Lake View gusher, which is credited with a total production in excess of 8,000,000 barrels. Fortunately for the oil industry of the State, this well is now a thing of the past, and nothing, save a great crater-like opening marks its location. The pipe is entirely worn away and gone; and it is a matter of serious doubt if there can be anything done that will cause the well to produce again. Fortunately, also, there have been no other wells in that field or elsewhere throughout the State that in any may compared with the Lake View. Midway is noted for large wells, of from 500 to 2,000 barrels production; but the decline is rapid, and a few months serve to bring the output down to a few hundred barrels. In the oil-territory heretofore blocked out as proved and probable, there have been, during the year, many changes. Some areas which were expected to be fairly productive have apparently failed; others, more strictly "wild-cat," have come in; while in some of the older fields there are properties which are beginning to shorn evident signs of exhaustion. A digital computer program to mathematically simulate the effect of limited changes in feed rate in the range of 80 to 95 tph on a plant-scale wet grinding circuit has been developed and tested. The circuit studied included an 8-ft-diam X 12-ft rod mill operating in open circuit and feeding two parallel 12-ft-diam x 10-ft pebble mills, each one operating in closed circuit with an 8 X 32-ft rake classifier. The simulation is an empirical one based on two sets of data collected manually from the operating circuit under what was said to be steady-state feed rates of 80 and 95 tph with all other operating variables also at steady state. The procedure is a combination of several published approaches to the modeling of grinding mills and classifiers and it is applicable to a wide range of circuits. The program permits the computing of the size distributions of all feeds and discharges of all grinding units and classifiers in the circuit for a specified feed rate. The data used in this report for demonstrating the program are unsatisfactory since the circuit was not operating under steady-state conditions when it was sampled. Consequently the circuit model parameters could not be accurately estimated. The predictive power would be greatly improved if new data were obtained under true steady-state conditions.

A THOROUGHLY modern coal-handling system has been installed at the Pittsburgh Terminal R. R. & Coal Co.'s new No. 8 shaft, or Coverdale mine, about 11 mi. (17.7 km.) from Pittsburgh on a spur f the Montour R. R. The Pittsburgh seam, which is the one worked, is reached at a depth of 342 ft. (104 m.). Power is delivered to the mine at 22,000 volts over a transmission line of the bow-arrow type of construction. A private telephone line connecting the various mines and the main office in Pittsburgh is carried on the same poles. The high-tension line is brought to an outdoor, step-down, transformer substation, where three 833-kv.-a., single-phase, 60-cycle, oil-insulated, self-cooled transformers reduce the potential to 2300 volts. The transformers are protected by electrolytic, aluminum-cell lightning arresters, horn gaps, and choke coils. High and low-tension busses, together with fuses, choke coils and air-break horn-gap switches with their remote-control operating mechanism are mounted on a substantial structural-steel tower 25 ft. (7.6 m.) in height. MINE SUBSTATION The transformer substation is adjacent to a pressed-brick building that houses direct-current substation equipment together with switchboards, etc., for the control and distribution of power. This building also contains the hoist for the men and supplies.

ACCURATE knowledge of the solid solubilities of the elements that dissolve in the important base metals is needed for guidance in the preparation and heat-treatment of the alloys derived from these compo-nents. While there is still difference of opinion concerning the merits of the X-ray and microscopic methods of determining such solubilities, it is certainly true that the recent extensive use of X-ray diffraction to review the existing constitutional data has revealed many glaring inaccu-racies and has brought about a much improved knowledge of phase-boundary locations, which will inevitably come to include all of the important alloy systems. When the work is done with all necessary precautions it appears that in the majority of cases where the solubilities extend beyond a few tenths of a per cent the X-ray back-reflection technique is capable of furnishing the best of information in this field. For the most prolonged and thorough studies it is obviously advisable to combine the results of several methods, in particular, to obtain an agreement between X-ray and microscopic data. This paper reviews the work previously done on the solubilities of phosphorus, arsenic, antimony and bismuth in copper and, in considera-tion of the uncertainties thus made apparent, presents, new X-ray data obtained with the first three members of this group.

Experirmental bonds of Ag-In SLID to gold, copper, nickel, Kovar, Dumet, nickel-plated molybdenum, ALL-Pt vrzetallizing on ceramic, and nickel-plated Mo-Ti metallizing on Al2O3 ceramic have been made and exalnined. Metallographic taper sections were made of all bonds for Phase identification. In addition, failuve temperatltres were determined for bonds heated undev shear load. Sowe bonds were subjected to electvon-probe microanalysis. The ternary SLID system Ag-In-Sn was similarly evaluated. Plwtonticrogaphs and electron-probe data are discussed and related to over-all phase diagrams , diffusion effects, and wetting properties of the liquid. The rates of diffusion andor compound formation of gold, silver, and copper in indium and In-Sn liquids are found to descend in that order, as measured by the relatzve thickness of phase layers in the interfaces of bonds made at 200to 400°C. It is concluded that the SLID process enables one to produce bonds which are stable at high temperatures, after having been fabricated at low temperatures, and meet most requirements for application in interconnection, silicon bonding, or hermetic sealing of electronic devices. In a previous publication by one of the authors, the theory and principle of SLID bonding in simple binary systems was discussed. SLID bonding can be defined as a joining process using a preform with a laminated structure: a low-melting material clad on a high-melting core. During the bonding cycle a metallurgical transformation occurs such that the resultant structure can withstand, without reliquefying, temperatures higher than those at which the bond was made. The phases present in the joint interface region are high-melting compounds or, if equilibrium is reached, solid solution. Properties will depend on the phases present, ultimately approaching those of the solid substrate core of the SLID preform. The high-temperature strength of bonds made in these systems was correlated to phase identification in the interfacial bond regions from metallographic cross sections and electron-probe X-ray microanalysis data. When complex electronic components are assembled, multiphase systems result at the interfaces of bond regions. In these ternary and higher-order systems very little diffusion and phase-diagram data is available with which to predict the nature of the interfacia1 region that will result from conventional fabrication processes and subsequent field use of the component. Clarke and Rhines did early work in the field using the Al-Mg-Zn system as a vehicle. Guy and co-workers studied a portion of the Cu-Zn-Ni system and some mathematical4 and general5 aspects of multiphase diffusion. irkald' and coworkerse recently studied diffusion in the Cu-Zn-Sn system. No diffusion studies have been made on ternary systems directly applicable to this investigation but some phase diagrams are available: g-u-n, u-i-n, and CU-i-n. I) DESCRIPTION AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The elements Au, Ag, Cu, Ni, In, and Sn are found in alloy systems commonly used in fabricating and assembling electronic components. Reference to the appropriate phase diagrams9 and the previous publication will indicate that the binary systems of any of the two low-melting elements, indium and tin, with any one of the other four higher-melting elements are capable of producing SLID bonds. It is not unreasonable to assume that any ternary or higher-order alloy system containing at least one of the elements gold, silver, copper, or nickel and one or both of the elements indium and tin could be used to produce bonds which are stable at high temperatures, after having been fabricated at low temperatures. Indeed, the liquidus contours and isothermal sections of those phase diagrams available7 do so indicate. The idea of using water-only cyclones to scalp clean coal from the feed to other devices has recently been gaining in popularity. 1,2,6 An indication of this popularity is that water-only cyclone scalping is already employed in a few commercial plants. Water-only cyclones scalp the feed to a heavy media vessel in the Warwick plant,3 to Deister tables in the Rowland plant,4 and to a heavy media cyclone circuit in the Amherst Coal Company's McGregor plant.5 Despite this trend, we found surprisingly little information in the literature on the performance of water-only cyclone scalping. Therefore, we undertook a study of its technical merits, limiting our investigation to a water-only cyclone scalper in conjunction with heavy-media cyclones. We felt this to be a reasonable combination of equipment, since both processes operate well on the same size coal. First, we developed simple mathematical relationships revealing general characteristics of the system. Next, we compared the clean coal yield and quality obtainable by the system on four different coals with that obtainable by heavymedia cyclone circuit alone and water-only cyclones middlings recirculation circuit alone. This was done by using computer program to simulate the operation of the three systems. Finally, we considered the effect that implementation of the system would have on a typical preparation plant circuit. The System The system chosen for study [(shown schematically in Fig. 1)] comprises two stages: a primary stage (PI) consisting of water-only cyclones, and a secondary stage (P2) consisting of heavy media cyclones. The water-only cyclones separate raw coal at a low specific gravity, producing a relatively small amount of high quality clean coal and a refuse containing much good coal. This refuse is then recleaned in the secondary stage, where the sharper separation of heavy media cyclones, operated at a higher specific gravity, reclaims additional clean coal. Finally, the clean coal from both stages is combined as the system's clean coal, while the refuse from the secondary stage becomes the system's refuse output. Theoretical Analysis Two assumptions lie behind the following theoretical analysis. The first assumption is that partition curves can represent not only the performance of each stage but also the performance of the system as a whole. These curves show partition number as a function of specific gravity, where partition number is either the percent or fraction of a raw coal with a given specific gravity reporting to clean coal. The second assumption is that these curves are independent of the raw coal characteristics. At any specific gravity the system's partition number is solely a function of the partition numbers of each stage. For convenience, we use the following variables in describing this relationship: g = specific gravity, PS(g) = the partition number of the system at specific gravity g, P1(g) = the partition number of the primary stage at specific gravity g, P2(g) = the partition number of the secondary stage at a specific gravity g. For this system, we can show algebraically that the relationship is: [Ps (g) = PI (g) + (1- P1(g)) P2 (9)(1)] With this equation the system's partition curve can be determined if the partition curves of each stage are known. By definition, the partition numbers P1(g) and P2(g) must each be less than, or equal to, one. Placing these constraints on Eq. (1), we arrive at the relations: [Ps(g) % P1(g) and Ps(g) % P2(g)(2)] Thus, at any specific gravity the system's partition number is always greater than that of both stages. ONE of the largest hard rock operations ever undertaken on the continent is part of the Aluminum Co. of Canada's gigantic British Columbia development in the mountainous wilderness back of the north coastal port of Prince Rupert. To provide electric power for the huge aluminum smelter under construction at Kitimat, 400 miles northwest of Vancouver, Alcan is reversing the flow of a 5000 sq mile drainage area by blocking the eastward-flowing Nechako River with the largest sloping clay core dam in the world. The backed-up waters of a 110-mile chain of lakes will be tapped at their eastern end by a 10-mile tunnel piercing a mile-high mountain range. From this tunnel water will pass through penstocks to a subterranean powerhouse after a drop of 2600 ft and empty into the Kemano River almost at tide water. A projected battery of eight turbine-driven generators will produce more than a million horsepower, although, initially, three generators of 140,000 hp each will be installed. Power will travel 50 miles across another mountain range, over a glacier, and across an arm of the ocean to what will ultimately be the world's largest aluminum smelter-a plant 2 ½ miles long. Ore smelted at Kitimat will come from Jamaica, but carving the tunnel, penstocks, and powerhouses cavern out of the heart of a mountain is so vast a job that most of the problems of a major mining operation are encountered. The powerhouse cavern alone is a big hard rock job. This chamber lies 1400 ft back from the mountain face and will eventually be 1100 ft long, 80 ft wide, and an average 118 ft high. Now under construction, the roof of this cavern will take the form of a parabolic arch. The prime contractors, Morrison-Knudsen Co. of Canada, are to excavate a length of 700 ft by May 1954. This section will provide a main control room, erection bay and space for eight generating units. The roof arch is to be lined with reinforced concrete and a plan now under study provides for concrete curtain walls separated from the rock sides of the cavern to prevent moisture accumulation. Cavern Excavation Excavation of the cavern began with the driving of an 8x8-ft exploratory drift 1500 ft long. Two horseshoe-shaped access and tailrace tunnels were bored to serve excavation work. These tunnels are approximately the same length as the exploratory drift and 25 ft high. The floors of both tunnels were graveled to permit the use of rubber-tired equipment. Eventually, the tailrace tunnel will be enlarged to 40 ft height to drain water from the turbine pits below the powerhouse floor. When the tunnels reached the cavern location, a mucking tunnel, approximately 25 ft square, was driven the projected length of the powerhouse at the floor level of the cavern. Another tunnel, 10 ft square, was carried in the same direction from the exploratory drift at the level of the arch spring line, 65 ft above the cavern floor. To connect these two tunnels, seven shafts 10 ft wide and approximately 80 ft long were driven through to the lower mucking tunnel, 65 ft below. These shafts were located on 120-ft centers, the length of the powerhouse cavern. Blasting is done from this upper tunnel to the final line of the roof arch. Two bulldozers, an International TD-24 and a TD-9, doze blasted material to the shafts where it drops to floor level. From here, the rock is loaded by Eimco loaders and power shovels into rubber-tired Koehring Dumptors and Euclid end-dump trucks. The arched roof section will be completely excavated and concreted before vertical blast holes are drilled down from the level of the arch spring line to the floor of the cavern. The arched roof section with its parabolic curve will have a width of 80 ft and a rise to the crown of 47 ft.

A.. S. DWIGHT, New York, N. Y.-Mr. Henrich's paper is rather inconclusive as to the role that alumina really plays in slags. He gives a number of interesting instances of high alumina, with conclusions that he draws from the analyses, in the light of what he knows of the accompanying conditions, but the information given is hardly sufficient to permit intelligent criticism of these conclusions, for it is well known that the slag composition is not the only factor that can produce some of the furnace results favorable or disastrous, as the case may be, which he records. As a matter of fact, most metallurgists who have wrestled with this problem in connection with the smelting of lead and copper ores, usually arrived at some sort of a working hypothesis which met the local conditions fairly well, and then, being busy men, were inclined 'to leave the theoretical question very much as Mr: Henrich leaves it when he says: "A question with which I purpose dealing at some future time." It is unfortunate that in the Golden Age of the smelting industry in the West, when we were all dealing with large tonnages of complex ores, often containing large percentages of alumina in combination with other. refractory elements, the smelting companies were not generally equipped for research as they are today, and much experience that might have been,

ELEMENTAL phosphorus (referred to as P,) is a true mineral product that has developed, in the relatively brief span of a century, from a laboratory curiosity to a heavy chemical. Annual production now exceeds 300,000 short tons. Continued rise in production has been predicted, consistent with new applications for P, derivatives and the expected population increase. In itself elemental P, is valuable chiefly as an 'intermediate chemical. The principal end uses at present are in inorganic phosphates, both simple and complex, of sodium and potassium, used in water treatment and detergent compounds, leavening agents, food supplements, and dentifrices. Organic P, compounds are important as plasticizers, oil additives, flotation agents, and more recently as gasoline additives (TCP being the outstanding example). The increasing use of high-analysis water-soluble and liquid solution fertilizers, as well as the direct application of phosphoric acid to the soil, will probably be the most significant factors in P, production growth rate. Coke oven plants now using sulfuric acid to fix byproduct ammonia values will gradually switch to phosphoric acid in order to market a fertilizer with completely available values. Recently sponsored experiments show that phosphoric acid can be directly admixed with cattle and poultry feed to produce rapid growth. Both P, compounds and modifiers for oil well drilling mud show increasingly promising significance.

Nickel corrosion in sulfuric acid solutions at elevated temperatures and oxygen wer-pressures was imestigated. Weight loss was 1inear with time and varied directly with oxygen concentration. Independent variation of the possible active species in solution indicated that the undissociated sulfuric acid molecule plays an important part in the corrosion mechanism. The rate determining step was considered to be the adsorption of oxygen on a site containing adsorbed H2SO4. THE tendency for a metal to go into solution depends on a number of factors some of which are: 1) the position of the metal in the electrochemical series; 2) the type and concentration of corroding species in solution; 3) the concentration of oxygen in solution; 4) the type of film formed at the liquid-metal interface; and 5) the physical state of the metal. The corrosion of a metal in an aqueous solution may be considered to be a heterogeneous reaction that occurs at the liquid-metal interface. The reaction is generally considered to occur as a result of electrochemical potential differences within the system. Little work has been published in the literature concerning the corrosion of pure nickel. A great deal has been publistled dealing with the experimental and theoretical aspects of the over-all corrosion process. Evans,1 Uhlig,' and recently Todt 3 and Tomashoff,4 have published books which review the results of experiments which have been conducted on corrosion, and have developed some of the basic ideas of the more widely accepted theories of corrosion. Friend5 states that. nickel does not readily discharge hydrogen from any of the common nonoxidiz-ing acids and that a supply of some oxidizing agent is necessary for appreciable rates of corrosion. He further notes that at temperatures between atmospheric and close to boiling, corrosion rates tend to vary with concentration, temperature, and aeration in acid concentrations up to 25 pct. Whitman and Russel6 studied the effect of dissolved oxygen on a number of metals in acid solutions and found that oxygen accelerates the rate of corrosion of nickel in sulfuric acid. Flowers and Kelley7 in studying the action of dissolved CO, on electroplated nickel postulated that nickel dissolves as NiHCO3 in the presence of CO, and air. It was found that oxygen was necessary for corrosion to take place and that the rate increased with increasing amounts of oxygen in solution. Flowers and Kelley attributed the oxygen effect to cathodic depolarization. MacGillavry, Rosenbaum, and wensson' determined metal solution potentials of nickel in various electrolytes. They found that nickel has no tendency to corrode in alkaline solutions in the presence or absence of air. In acid solutions in the presence of air, metal solution potential increases in the order of 1/2 v were observed. This increase was attributed to probable chemisorption of oxygen on the nickel surface and the corrosion mechanism suggested was the interaction of H+ ions with the nickel oxide formed at the surface. Delahay9 observed the reduction of oxygen on various metals. A polarograph was used to measure the course of the reaction. With some metals hydrogen peroxide was produced as an intermediate compound. However, nickel was not considered to be a hdrogen peroxide producer. Van Rysselberghe 10,11 and associates attributed the accelerating effect of carbon dioxide on the corrosion process to the presence of percarbonic acid produced in solution reacting with the hydrogen peroxide. The percarbonic acid can be reduced at less negative potentials than hydrogen peroxide and as a result accelerates the reaction. EXPERIMENTAL Since a complete description of the apparatus used can be obtained elsewhere,12'13 no attempt will be made here to describe the equipment other than to note that it consisted essentially of an autoclave unit from which samples could be withdrawn periodically without disturbing the interior state of the autoclave. A titanium autoclave liner was used to protect the autoclave from the solution.

One mechanism of metal penetration into mold aggregates by cast steels is vapor state mass transport. In order to further understand and quantify this mechanism, the steady-state diffusion of metallic vapors was studied at 1250" to 1600°C in controlled oxygen pressure atmospheres by measuring the weight loss from a metal bath whose vapors were allowed to diffuse through a porous aggregate compact held at constant temperature. Mass transport rates substantially greater than those predicted from the assumption that the vaporizing species was the elemental metal vapor were observed. Vaporization rates were found to increase with an increase in the oxygen partial pressure in the gas atmosphere with maximum vaporization occurring at oxygen partial pressures just below those in equilibrium with a liquid oxide layer at the given temperature. When the liquid oxide layer was present, no vaporization was observed. Metal carbonyls were ruled out as the vapor species involved because of their thermodynamic properties. The species with the enhanced volatility were deduced to be gaseous metal-oxygen molecules, probably the polynuclear oxides (FeO)2 and (Mn0)2. Diffusion followed the ordinary diffusion mode, and Knudsen diffusion is not important in normal foundry molds. The interdiffusivities of the metallic vapors and the mold atmosphere, through the porous aggregates, were measured. The effective interdif-fusivity of the vapor species and mold atmosphere through the aggregate may be expressed as follows: Deff,12 - — where E is the void fraction of the aggregate and 7 is the "tortuosity factor". Aggregate material had no effect on diffusion rates, and the only relevant parameter was the void fraction. Values for 7 ranged from 3 to 6 for normal foundry aggregates with 4 being considered a good representative value. An area of interest in high-temperature metallurgical processes which has received little attention in the past is the diffusion of metal vapor species in porous aggregates. Research into the metal penetration phenomenon' in foundry molds has shown that a major penetration mechanism is the vapor transport of metallic species into the porous foundry sand molds, followed by condensation of metallic films on the sand grains. Considerable study of the vaporization of metallic species has been reported in the literature, and the vapor transport properties of many metallic species have been determined.2'3 Many instances have been observed where the vaporization behavior could only be explained by the existence of a metallic species with a vapor pressure greater than the elemental metallic species. These species were identified or, in some cases, presumed to be carbonyls,4,5 hydroxides,6-9 or vaporous oxides.10-16 The diffusion of gases through porous aggregates has received considerable attention in the literature pertaining to catalysis, although primarily at low temperature, and more recently in the literature concerned with ore reduction.17-22 The following experiments were devised and carried out in order to determine the nature of the metallic species involved in the metal penetration phenomenon, and the effective diffusivities involved. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Steady-state diffusion was selected for experimental convenience. The experimental systems used, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, consisted of a porous aggregate specimen contained in an impermeable alumina tube held above, and just separate from a metal bath. The entire system was held at constant temperature and pressure in a furnace with a controlled oxygen partial pressure atmosphere. After a brief period of nonsteady state behavior, a steady flux of metal vapor through the porous aggregate will develop due to the concentration gradient of metallic vapor in the gas phase. The flux of metallic vapor from pressure may be neglected because there is no pressure gradient. There is no flux from convection because there is no net flow of gas within the metal-aggregate system, and thermal diffusion is negligible compared to the flux from ordinary diffusion. If the material being studied is allowed to vaporize until steady-state behavior is attained, the experimental results may be analyzed using Fick's First Law.

During the year Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 1916, 962 applications for member-ship in the Institute were received, as compared to 558 during the corresponding period in 1915. The lines along which the Committee has, worked during the year, group themselves under seven principal heads. Large Companies.-Early in the year a letter was addressed to each member of the Institute who is the executive head of an organization, pointing out to him the advantages that would accrue to that organization through having as many of its subordinate members as were qualified participating in the activities of the Institute. This was followed by a second letter to those who made no reply to the first. The response to these letters was very gratifying, 12 new members having been secured at a single plant, and smaller numbers at others. This was effectively supplemented by our President, who wrote the executive heads of some of the largest mining and smelting companies, pointing out to them the advantage to be derived from sending some of the junior members of their staff to attend the Arizona Meeting. One organization sent 24 of its younger men, many of whom were not members of the Institute, but who, subsequently sent in applications for membership. It is to be hoped that the precedent thus set' will be acted 'on in -fuller measure in succeeding years.

THE year 1923 was marked by slight progress in exploring and developing the petroleum resources assumed to exist in Central America. Actual drilling for oil took place only in Costa Rica and Panama. The Sinclair Consolidated Oil Corpn., through its subsidiary the Costa Rica Oil Corpn., drilled in southeastern Costa Rica.. Its, Panaman subsidiary is reported to have abandoned drilling in Bocas del Toro. The Texas Co. drilled in Chiriqui, and the Panama Gulf Co. in Garachiné, Province of Darién. No oil was obtained in any of these wells;' shows of gas were met in Costa Rica. Concession hunting continued during the year. A number of concessions, several of which appear to be purely speculative, were submitted for ratification. Some confusion has been caused by overlapping concessions and claims to oil lands, caused partly by the imperfection of existing maps. A conflict between the Sinclair, and Gulf companies in Panama has been compromised. The Amory concession in central Costa Rica, held by the British Controlled Oilfields, Ltd., was voided by decision of the arbitrator, Chief -Justice Taft. Geologic exploration took-place in Guatemala and in Panama. The chief contribution of the year to Central American geology was a description by Katherine Van Winkle Palmer of Lower Miocene foraminifera and mollusks from southeastern Costa Rica. A new petroleum law was promulgated in Panama.

INTRODUCTION Over the world, and especially in the United States, there is increasing dependence upon progressively lower grade ore deposits. These lower grade ores are frequently difficult or impossible to process due to complex mineral assemblages being very finely disseminated. Thus, many of the conventional mineral concentration methods are not applicable to these ores. For the last few decades, research in the more exotic mineral processing techniques has been conducted, both in universities and in governmental and industrial laboratories. Since its inception, the Institute of Mineral Research of Michigan Technological University (MTU) has devoted much of its attention to the problems of processing refractory, low grade ores. Recently a new flotation system was developed which shows promise of being applicable to a broad range of ore types. This process has been the subject of two allowed patent applications. This paper describes the details of such a flotation system which is potentially useful for treating ultrafine minerals. Some highlights of the testing program on a variety of iron ores and a group of lithium-bearing ores will be presented. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Both iron and lithium ore flotation treatments followed the same general procedures, with minor differences in pH and in reagent dosages. The method is rather simple, efficient and economical from the standpoint of recovery and the cost of reagents consumed.
