Introduction For many major mining projects the time frame from initial planning to production can be measured in decades. Hecla's Silver Shaft project, scheduled to go into production by the end of this year, includes a complete surface facility, shaft with an ultimate depth of 2.4 km (7,700 ft), complete ore pass and loading pocket system, and 610 m (2,000 ft) of development drifting and stope preparation. The project was conceived in the fall of 1979, and the duration of a mere four years from conceptual engineering to production is testimony to what can be accomplished when a mining company and a contractor work as a team rather than developing into two warring camps, as often happens. Safety reasons render necessary the advanced calculation of the amount of methane degassing from a longwall in the scope of the ventilation planning of mines. Today empirical methods, which are based on observations of operational procedures, are used for the calculation of the amount of methane. Despite of constant improvement those calculations are not always sufficient. In particular calculations which are based on operational facts but not proved by experience are not reliable. Most of all these calculation procedures lack physical-analytical descriptions of the procedure itself, presenting only the effects on important parameters such as the distance between seams in the roof or floor or gas pressure. Tschersich [Tschersich 961 developed an analytical model for an advanced calculation by analysing the degassing of seams in the roof and floor and the physical parameters of gasflow. This model might correct the lacks of existing procedures and improve the precision and reliability of additional calculations. The model simulates the emission record in seams of the roof and the floor. It takes into account not only a multitude of parameters such as the distance to adjacent seams and gas pressure but also the depth of seams, gas content, rank of carbonification, rock temperature, face advance rate, initial and succeeding mining and the face length. In order to comprehend and to verify those correlations we extended the model of Tschersich and programmed this enlarged model using the computer language C++. Aim of this research is to guarantee a much higher accuracy in calculating methane emission caused by mining. The improved planning is expected to result in more safety and better prevention of high methane con- tent in ventilation as well as in a better use of the capacity of the mining equipment. The application [Drijver, lnderst 961 of the ex- tended model will also be very useful in the course of research projects as it allows computer simulation, i.e. in-situ research can be extensively limited or even replaced.

The Bradshaw Section 5A Interceptor involves the construction of two miles of 108-inch, finished diameter tunnel in dry soils. Excavation is generally by Lovat TBM with ribs and lagging support. The tunnel is beneath a recreational parkway and stringent measures have been enacted to preserve the parkway and minimize disruption to the neighborhood. Apart from these constraints, the project would have been unremarkable but for the intervention of CalOSHA and the local fire department who ordered extraordinary fire protection measures. The paper discusses the cause and effect of these measures and comments on the potential repercussions for other projects.

One way of increasing conveyor systems productivity is by monitoring the key parameters in the systems. In this paper, a new line of smart bearings will be presented and discussed. The new bearings are capable of monitoring temperature, vibrations, and belt speed for early detection of potentially serious problems. The new smart bearings have built in sensors that are carefully integrated and protected for long life service. These bearings are going to be the key to increasing the up time of belt conveyors in the future.

The reliability and comparability of LCA results crucially depends on the quality of LCI data, that is defined by specific normative requirements. In parallel the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) provides a set of guidance documents for enhancing the quality, rigor, and utility of SD reporting with specific reporting principles that address similar issues on a company level comparable to LCI data quality requirements on the process level. In order to assess the general suitability of the fundamental reporting principles for LCI data quality purposes selected reports from mining and minerals (M&M) sector are assessed within a detailed analysis."

Introduction Pebble mill grinding can be defined as wet or dry grinding in a tumbling mill with pebbles used as grinding media instead of metal balls. To clarify the terminology, which may differ in the various mineral industries, it is essential to point out the differences between grinding with partially sized and carefully sized grinding media. When grinding with partially sized media (limited top size only), sizing is usually the setting of the primary crusher and there is no bottom sizing-all fines, chips, sand, and small sizes are included. This is often called run-of-mine or primary autogenous grinding. In this case the entire crusher discharge is fed into the mill and part of it becomes "charge" and the rest is "sand feed." When grinding with carefully sized media (i.e., media that is sized both at the top and bottom of the size range), no fines or chips should be present in the charge to the mill. This is pebble milling and the grinding media consists of ore, rock, Danish pebbles, gravel pebbles, or ceramic pebbles-media that is appreciably lighter than steel balls. The grind¬ing charge is fed to the mill to maintain a load and it does the grinding usually on a classified sand product of suitable size. If the grinding media is the same as the raw material being ground, this type of grinding is also called secondary autogenous grinding. Pebble milling was in common use in the gold mines of South Africa in the early 1900s. It is by far the oldest form of autogenous grinding. It may be used to grind crushed ores from a maximum size of about -% in. to all -10 µm. Pebble milling differs from "run of mine" grinding in many ways, but two big differences are: I) The ore itself is crushed to approximately t/4 in., or it may be further reduced to 8 or 10 mesh in a rod mill or fine crusher. 2) Then carefully screened ore of the correct size is placed in one or more stages of pebble mills to grind the ore to its desired final size. The media size is carefully selected to be the most efficient for the particular size reduction required in each stage. This is a precise practice, and pebble mills can be designed as easily and accu¬rately as can rod mills or ball mills by those skilled in the art. A pebble mill is a rotating cylinder in which the grinding media has been carefully sized for the job in hand. If the mill is doing coarse grinding, the media will be correspondingly large and the mill might be called a primary (or intermediate) pebble mill or a lump mill. If it is to do fine grinding, the media selected is proportionately smaller and the mill would be called a secondary or tertiary pebble mill. The media itself is normally rounded pebbles made from screened ore from the primary-crusher discharge. The charge could be rounded pebbles of the correct size removed from a primary autogenous mill, or the pebbles could be carefully sized gravel, sized beach pebbles, or sized flint pebbles. Usually the specific gravity of a pebble is from 35 to 55% of that of steel balls. It commonly varies from 2.66 to 4.2, depending on the specific gravity of the ore. Primary pebble mills, or lump mills, would be charged with pieces of rock up to 10 in. maximum and 5 in. minimum and would grind crusher discharge with a maximum size of 1/4 in. on hard ores and 3/8 in. on softer ores. Secondary pebble mills could be charged with pieces of rock screened on 4 x 4-in. square mesh and retained on 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 in. These mills would grind material with a top size of 8 to 10 mesh. Tertiary pebble mills could be charged with screened rock that would pass 3 x 3 in. and be retained on 1 x 1 in. and grind 35 to 48 mesh sands. Principles of Operation Media Size To operate a pebble mill efficiently it is imperative that great care be taken in screening the rock feed that is fed into the mill to round up into a range of pebble sizes that are suitable for grinding of the sands that are also being fed into the mill, having regard to the top size and the average size of such sands. Since most mill operators know from experience the correct size of steel balls to be used in a mill to handle different sizes of sand feed, it is convenient to relate the pebble size to a ball size. If the correct ball size is not known, it is relatively simple to conduct batch laboratory tests in 12- to 18-in. laboratory mills to determine the optimum size of steel ball. Also, Bond and others have published formulas for calculating the optimum ball size. When the correct size of the individual steel ball is known, then a pebble of the same weight will perform the same grinding if used in the proper size of mill and under the proper conditions, which will be defined later. This media size, as defined by the average weight of the individual pieces, is most important. The following tests will serve to clarify this point. Laboratory Tests Using Steel Balls or Pebbles. Several labora¬tory grinds were made to compare a given size and weight of steel ball with a pebble of the same weight but larger size, and of the same size but lighter weight. The following loads were used in the 12-in. laboratory mill: All 1 1/4-in. steel balls weighing 122 ± 10 g. All 1 3/4-in. pebbles weighing 123 ± 5 g. All 1 1/4-in. pebbles weighing 45 ± 3 g. To equalize capacity, the test with the steel balls was run only 34% as long as the tests with pebbles. In each case, 2,500 g of primary sands were ground at the optimum gravity for the media being tested at a speed 78 1/2 % of critical speed, and for 170, 340, and 680 revolu¬tions for the steel balls, and 500, 1,000, and 2,000 revolutions for the pebbles. The first test is summarized in Table 74 by showing the 80% passing size in microns for the feed and for each of the grinds. Two other tests are summarized in Table 75 showing the screen analyses

Metal ions associated with effluent streams pose an increasing environmental problem for the mineral industry. Various techniques currently in use to combat this problem including bioremediation, chemical precipitation, and ion exchange are reviewed, and their relative advantages and disadvantages discussed. An alternative technique for metal ion removal, adsorption on surface modified alumina substrates is presented. Alumina surfaces were modified by adsorption of organofunctional silanes, and metal ion removal occurs by chelation of the ion by the adsorbed silane molecules. Experimental data is presented for the removal of cupric ions by this method and is compared to cupric ion removal by adsorption on alumina without prior surface modification.

ShouSteel Mining Ltd., a subsidiary of ShouSteel (Group) Co., was founded in 1959 and is located in QianAn City in Hebei Province, China. ShouSteel?s pelletizing plant uses iron ore as a raw material combined with limestone, dolostone, or olivine, with bentonite as a binder. After mixing the raw materials and forming them into small, spherical balls, ShouSteel then fires pellets in kilns for hardening. The company sells the finished pellets as raw materials for blast furnaces used to produce industrial metals such as iron. ShouSteel?s handling capacity is approximately 24.5 Mt/a (27 million stpy) of ore. The company?s production capacity is 3.2 Mt/a (3.5 million stpy) of oxide pellets and 560 Mt (650 million st) of sinters. Until recently, ShouSteel Mining had not replaced its electronic scales in its series of ingredient chambers. Because of the wear and tear on these older scales, the weighing system began to encounter regular problems. The company experienced a high failure rate from the integrator, an unstable signal, weak anti-interference ability and low accuracy. ShouSteel also found that spare parts required during repairs were consistently high in cost and that system calibration was becoming increasingly frequent.

INTRODUCTION The support of openings in weak sandstones can be achieved by spraying on a liquid grout which will soak in and harden to form a shell. In the St. Peter sandstone of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area of Minnesota compressive strength is increased from about 0.7 MPa (100 psi) to over 7 MPa (1000 psi) to depths of 152 mm (6 in.). A shell of this strength and thickness can pro¬vide support much as shotcrete does but at lower cost. If the spray-grouted shell is inadequate for the support needed, it provides a good base for shotcrete application, which is often difficult in weak or friable sand¬stones because the fresh shotcrete peels off along with a thin layer of sandstone. The spray-grouted technique was initially developed at the Civil and Mineral Engineering Dept. of the University of Minnesota using funds provided by RANN Div. of the National Science Foundation. It was used as temporary support in a 3-m (10-ft) wide, 3700-m (12,000-ft) long storm water drain tunnel by the Minneapolis Sewer Construction Dept. Much of the field development at this construction project was carried out with the cooperation of the personnel of the city of Minneapolis. It also was used for temporary support in a 3.3-m (11-ft) wide, 1800-m (6000-ft) long storm water tunnel built in 1978-1980 for the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation in Minneapolis. In 1975, 2000 m (6500 ft) of 1.5-m (5-ft) wide utility tunnels were spray-grouted for final lining. A 50-m (150-ft) long, 1.2-m (4-ft) wide test tunnel built at the university in 1974 was sprayed for half its length and is being observed for long-term behavior which to date (1981) is good. GROUT MATERIALS The requirements for the liquid grout are more severe than those for injection grouting. Besides being able to penetrate the rock and develop sufficient strength, it must have the following properties: (1) be nontoxic, noncombustible, and have a low odor for spraying under¬ground; (2) have controllable viscosity and setting time for adjusting to the permeability of the sandstone and the required depth of penetration; and (3) must "wet" the sandstone and develop capillary "draw" to penetrate to the required depth. A sodium silicate-based grout with the proper setting agent meets these requirements in the local St. Peter sandstone which has a uniform grain size dis¬tribution curve with D,,, = 0.1 mm, permeability of about 10 to 20 darcys, a porosity of about 25%, and less than 5% of silt size or smaller. It is 97 to 99% pure SiO2. The grout mix consists of Philadelphia Quartz Co. Type N sodium silicate and Celtite 55 Terraset Spray Grade (SG) distributed by Celtite Inc., Cleveland, OH. A volume mix ratio of 100:9:125 for sodium silicate to setting agent to water produces a grout with two to four centipoise viscosity, and initial set at 20°C of 20 min. Setting time is temperature dependent, being longer at lower temperatures, but can be adjusted by varying the setting agent concentration a few percentage points. APPLICATION The application is simple. Spray the grout on the surface until the desired penetration is achieved. Penetration rates of about 5 mm (0.2 in.) per min. are realized in the St. Peter sandstone for up to 152 mm (6 in.) of penetration (30 min. of spraying). The set time must be longer than the spraying time. The spray nozzle should be moved back and forth at a rate that minimizes runoff due to surface buildup. Both a single large hand-propelled nozzle and multiple small machine propelled nozzles have been used successfully. The pumping and mixing equipment used consisted of: (1) a hand-held, hand-pumped, 11-L (3-gal) gar¬den sprayer for test patches (mix by shaking); (2) 76-L (20 gal) batch mixing in barrels with small electric pumps for spraying and mixing; (3) two component pumps consisting of Hypro Model 5300 piston pumps (Hypro Pump Co., St. Paul, MN) on a common shaft driven by an electric motor. The sodium silicate is premixed with a portion of the water and the setting agent is mixed with the rest of the water. The two components are combined and mixed just before the nozzle; and (4) a proportioner metering the setting agent just before the nozzle with the water and sodium silicate premixed and pumped from the surface. The proportioner permits the bulk of the grout to be pumped through a single pipe or hose with only the setting agent stored underground. This is efficient and low in cost. COST The grout mix costs about $0.20/L ($0.75 per gal) in 1978 dollars. Filling all the voids 100 mm (4 in.) deep (25% initial porosity) would have a materials cost of about $5.40/m2 ($0.50 per sq ft). The labor cost of application is usually less than the material cost for normal tunnel jobs. A pump and proportioner cost less than $1000. Sodium silicate storage tanks and pip¬ing costs would depend on the particular site conditions. REFERENCES AND BIBLIOGRAPHY Nelson, C. The processing strategy for the effective separation of bitumen from low grade (< 10 weight percent bitumen) Utah tar sands by a hot water process differs significantly from that used for the processing of high grade (> 10 weight percent bitumen) Utah tar sands. Excellent separations (coefficient of separation = 0.9) can be achieved for high grade Utah tar sands by intense hot water digestion followed by a modified froth flotation step. Such a technique is ineffective for low grade tar sands. In order to change the characteristics of the low grade tar sand an attempt was made to enrich the bitumen content of the feed to greater than 10 weight percent by recycle of bitumen concentrate to the digestion stage. However the quality of the separation was not improved under these circumstances. Similarly feed enrichment by heat treating the low grade feed with recycled concentrate prior to digestion did not improve the separation. More successful separations of low grade Utah tar sands were finally achieved by modification of the viscosity of the low grade bitumen with controlled addition of diluent. These results of the hot water separation tests and variations in the quality of separation are interpreted in terms of the physical properties of the bitumen and the surface bonding forces operative at the bitumen-sand interface.

Clinoptilolite zeolite may offer attractive, cost-effective alternatives for remedial cleanup of old minesites, smelters and other sites with heavy metal contamination. Previous research demonstrates the relatively strong affinity of clinoptilolite for numerous metals and clinoptilolite displays a particularly strong affinity for lead (Loizidou and Townsend, 1987), one of the most toxic and problematic heavy metals. Since clinoptilolite can also selectively absorb some radionuclides and organic compounds, it may offer practical solutions to a wide variety of environmental problems.

Many mining companies try to fight their way up from small operator and exploration company to major producer. Not many companies make it. Cambior Inc., formed in 1986, is one company well on its way to making it as a major operating company. In 1993, Cambior surpassed 15.5 t (500,000 oz) of gold production and began operations at its world class Omai gold mine in Guyana. At the same time, the company has embarked on a program of geographic and minerals diversification. Cambior, a Canadian company, now has interests in eight mines, three development projects and more than 100 exploration properties in North and South America. The company’s goal is to derive 70% of its income from gold and 30% from base metals and other minerals. Cambior’s moderate diversification into base metals gives protection against negative gold price fluctuations. It also balances the typically short term gold mines and the longer term base metal mines.

The Bokan Mountain area on Prince of Wales Island, AK, contains vast quantities of heavy rare earth minerals. To lessen the US dependence on foreign sources, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated yttrium recovery from this ore. By sulfating the ore at 250 ° C for 1 hr at an H2S04:ore ratio of 1:1 and then water leaching the sulfated material for 1 hr at 20% solids and 25ºC, over 74% of the yttrium, cerium, and lanthanum were solubilized. Solvent extraction (SX), using a synergistic combination of OPAP and DEHPA, selectively loaded 100% of the yttrium. Yttrium was stripped directly as a solid using a 2M, 35 ° C NaOH liquor. When the OPAP/DEHPA mixture was tested in a continuous SX circuit, yttrium loading and stripping were 100% and 96%, respectively. The organic showed excellent recyclability properties with minimal solvent loss.

How representative are partial-panel screen tests of the in situ response of screen to roof and rib deterioration and displacements? Can a more representative procedure that tests up to two full screen panels improve the utilization and effectiveness of screen as a roof and rib support? This paper details a new full-panel screen test procedure and the initial results. The full-panel test frame was designed to test a 2.4 by 3.6-meter screened area with bolt spacing as small as 0.3-meter increments. The initial design included up to 6 screen pull points, but additional locations can be added to produce a more uniform loading. The test frame was developed to capitalize on the capabilities of the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The initial tests included a baseline test of a partial panel (1.22 by 1.22-m screen section) using the original 1.52 by 1.52-meter test frame, a 1.22 by 1.22-meter screen section test in the new full-panel test frame, and two tests of 2.4 by 3.6-meter screened area in the full-panel test frame. The 1.22 by 1.22-meter screen section tests in the full-panel test frame produced a peak load 6% higher and a yield load 30% lower than the partial-panel (original) test frame. The multiple pull points of the full-panel frame produced variable yield, peak, and intermediate loads, but on average were lower than the single pull-point tests. INTRODUCTION Roof and rib surface support has become a major component of the stability and safety of underground coal openings in the past 15 years. The use of screen, either metal or synthetic, has proven to decrease the injuries of underground coal miners. By 2005, there were 466 injuries in the United States caused by roof skin failures, with numerous mines not employing roof screen. In contrast, in 2015 there were 175 injuries caused by roof skin failures, with at least some of the reduction due to the increased use of roof screen. A continued effort to increase the utilization of screen in areas of underground coal mines where workers are traveling and working can reduce these injuries even further. To aid in this effort, the testing of various screen types under various loading and attachment conditions is required. Past testing efforts have primarily consisted of partial-panel testing in a laboratory setting. Laboratory testing of roof screen, both metal and composite, has been conducted in several ways by researchers, manufacturers, and other entities. The primary focus on the testing has been evaluating weld integrity of 1.22 by 1.22-meter screen section tests of various screen types utilized in mining (Dolinar, 2006; Dolinar, 2009; Tannant, 2001). There have also been several efforts at numerical simulation of the screen and screen/rock interactions (Murali et al., 2006; Shan et al., 2014). A few full-panel tests were performed with one pull or loading point in the center of the screen panel (Shan et al., 2014). As most previous efforts have mentioned, the only true way to evaluate the capabilities of screen is to conduct full-panel testing. Single wire strand, weld, and partial-panel (1.22 x 1.22-m) tests as well as numerical modeling only provide insight into the actual response of full-panel screen. A new test frame and procedure have been developed at PMRD to conduct various loading, anchoring, and material testing.

The importance and complexity of the ventilation systems in many underground coal mines necessitates the use of digital computers to model the ventilation networks. The modeling procedures used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) utilize the MSHA-modified Penn State computer program. The basic techniques used by MSHA have been described in detail in NESA (now MSHA) Informational Reports 1066 and 1183 (1. 2). Two basic methods are utilized for modeling underground mine ventilation systems. The first modeling method is the use of actual air-flow, pressure, and fan-performance data acquired during a full air-pressure, air-quantity ventilation survey to develop a mathematical model of the ventilation system. The second modeling method is the design of a ventilation system using data obtained from calculation, from past experience, or from technical literature. The latter method would typically be used to design a ventilation network prior to developing a new mine. Regardless of which method is used for modeling, there is a need to know, or to calculate, appropriate resistance values to be used for airways and for the various ventilation control structures. Such data is typically difficult to obtain and this report is an attempt to summarize typical resistance values which may be used in designing ventilation networks for new mines or in simulating proposed system changes in existing mines. Illustrations are presented to show where some of the resistances typically are located and how they are modeled in mine ventilation net- works.

Metal production has traditionally been a cyclical industry. 1977 in the base metals industry has highlighted that fact with a steady decline in the market place for base metals. Corporate aggregate planning is based on good forecasting and when changing conditions make that forecasting inaccurate, alternate analysis of schedules must be accomplished quickly. The computer is the only medium powerful enough to answer management&apos;s questions within an acceptable time frame. Worldwide communications networks now make it possible for the many multinational mining companies to arrive at coordinated corporate production plans based on similar basic data from several producing divisions. The Ontario Div. of Inco Metals Co., a unit of Inco Ltd., encompassed during 1977 14 producing mines, 2 nonproducing mines, 1 nonproducing open pit, 5 flotation mills, I smelter, 2 nickel refineries, 1 copper refinery, and an iron ore recovery plant. Several new mines are under development. Mine production approximates 63 500 tpd (70,000 stpd) from some 1000 workplaces. The need for longrange mine planning and scheduling is obvious and until recently has been satisfied by manual methods. However, while manual methods are often quite practical for a small number of mines, or for mines with relatively short lives, or for mines with only one mining method, the situation in the Ontario Div. is too complex and long-term to allow effective, timely planning by such methods. In 1967, a year after the first computer was installed in the division, work was begun on the computerization of the more than 30,000 borehole logs kept in the mines exploration files with a view to speeding up the assessment of mineral resources. Also in 1967 one of the first substantial systems developed on the main business systems computer was the monthly scheduling of development and production for all mines. This system encompassed tons productions per workplace, feet development per workplace, auxiliary and service activities and the requisite labor for each of these. These two dates are mentioned to show that concurrently with the acquisition of computers in the division there was an early understanding of the importance of automating mine scheduling and planning and of the potential for effective and useful computerization of such activities. In 1970, a pilot program was developed in one of the mines containing a large number of workplaces (350) to schedule the production on a network basis. Varying degrees of interest were shown by the individual mine engineers based on the complexity of the production planning problem at each mine. In an evolutionary process, mines were added to the system as its value became obvious in terms of time saving, flexibility, and accuracy. In 1975, the central mine engineering department decided that the system should be extended to all mines so that a complete division-wide long-range scheduling system would be available upon which to base development and production planning. This system would use basic ore data, allow the addition of scheduling commands, and calculate a schedule for the life of the mine. Many reports could be produced for each mine and all-mine summaries would also be available. The significance of the system can be stated in one phrase-speed, accuracy, and flexibility. Whereas in the past a long-range all mines schedule might have been done once a year, taking from two to three months, now it can be done in a day. The chief mines engineer can incorporate changes in input data and external constraints and call for a "new look" at the long-range schedule to assist him and mines production management in their decision-making processes. Using previous manual methods this could not be done quickly enough to be useful.

The rapid and continuing expansion of computer and communication capability is giving birth to profound changes in the business environment. Some commentators hold that the basis of the world economy has already shifted from industry to information. Regardless of the overall implications of these changes, it is now clear that every company potentially has both access to and a need for much more information for decision making than was the case a few years ago. The importance of information to the mining industry has been underlined by the rash of unexpected economic and political developments and by the accompanying market volatility that have marked the past decade. It should be abundantly clear to even the smallest mine operator that the price for his output can be instantly affected by unexpected developments halfway across the world. Nevertheless, many mining companies still are much less sophisticated about information than they might be. For many, the historical feeling that information is an unnecessary luxury for a production-oriented business still seems to linger. On the other hand, the overwhelming volume of source material, uncertainty as to its accuracy, and the problems of finding relevant material when needed, presents stumbling blocks to viable systems of information management. Introduction When a company needs certain information, it has two basic alternatives. It can either research and develop the information in-house or pay for someone else to do it. Few mining companies have the in-house capability to assemble information needed for careful planning. On the other hand, companies often engage consultants to find information that is in fact easily accessible. All too often companies give up on procuring needed information because of the frustration of not being able to find it, and of not wanting to pay seemingly exorbitant sums for someone else to produce it. The result is poor planning. This article addresses two aspects of the information problem-finding the right sources and then accessing the particular information desired, especially as it pertains to nonferrous metal exploration and development issues. In the first section, major English-language sources that report on exploration and development (excluding primary sources of geological information, such as technical journals) are discussed.* In the second section, some available techniques for efficiently accessing this information are presented, focusing on the new MINESEARCH database system. Part One: The Information Following the News The most obvious way to follow exploration and mining developments from a distance is through regular mining media. Many active mining districts have local newspapers, usually published in the district&apos;s major towns, that give extensive coverage to miningrelated activities. For instance, to follow activities in Idaho&apos;s Coeur d&apos;Alene silver district, one might subscribe to the Kellogg Wardner News and/or the Wallace Miner. Similarly, one might get the Sacramento Bee for news of current mining developments in north-central California. The American Metal Market, published in New York, is the daily newspaper that covers the metals industry as a whole, both in the US and abroad. Its coverage is weighted towards the refining, manufacturing, and consumption end of the business, but it frequently carries stories on mining activity, company dealings, and market outlooks. For news of major mining companies, the daily Wall Street Journal provides occasional coverage of North American companies, while the Financial Times of London serves as probably the best single source for worldwide company information. International Coverage There are three metals industry weeklies that have broad international coverage and readership. These are Metal Week, Metal Bulletin, and Mining Journal. Each has its strengths. Metals Week, a McGraw-Hill newsletter, focuses primarily on news of the metals markets, concentrating on those developments that are seen to most directly affect the price of nonferrous metals. In this paper the principal theories used to design roof bolting systems are presented and discussed. Then the characteristics of various types of roof bolts are presented and finally the interaction between rock and roof bolt characteristics on choice of roof bolts is discussed. Theories can be considered design tools which may or may not be appropriate for a specific situation. It is good for a design engineer to have a number of such tools available and also important that he understand their good features as well as their limitations. Hence, some of the principal theories and classification systems used for design of roof bolting systems are discussed first.

Shotcrete is widely accepted as an indispensable form of ground control around the world. Other Surface Support Liners such as mesh have been around as long as shotcrete while other Thin Support Liners (TSLs) have been introduced in recent decades. TSLs, however, have yet to replace shotcrete in many applications believed to be “perfect” for them. On the other hand, some recently introduced technologies may be on the brink of meeting most surface rock support requirements economically and safely. This paper will discuss rockfall statistics, small rockfall prevention and compare different surface support liners such as mesh, shotcrete and TSLs. Additionally, a shaft sinking TSL application example will be presented.

Cleveland&apos;s Southwest Interceptor Contracts No. 3 and No. 4 are continuations of Contract No. 1 addressed at the 1987 RETC with geology, equipment, and methods that differ greatly. The two contracts consist of 791 m (4.22 miles) of 3.5 m (11.5 ft) tunnel lined to 2.9 m (9.5 ft), nine access shafts, six drop shafts, and six collection structures. The excavation drive was completed by the use of a 1970 vintage Robbins TBM hybrid for this particular job through the use of both new and old technology. All other excavations were successfully accomplished through drill and blast method in tight residential areas. Concrete lining and connections were completed nine months after holing through.
